New stratigraphic evidence from the Rossendale area, Manitoba, Canada, provides insight into the early postglacial evolution
of the southeastern Assiniboine Delta. In this region, much of the upper 13+ m of sediment accumulation is characterized by
multiple cycles of sandy rhythmites interbedded with massive to laminated silt. These sediments were deposited rapidly by
traction or turbidity currents and record the construction of the Assiniboine fan-delta during the deep-water Lockhart Phase
of glacial Lake Agassiz (>10.8 14C ka BP). Shortly before ∼10 14C ka BP, fluvial incision into deltaic deposits occurred locally at the Rossendale Gully site in response to the regression
of glacial Lake Agassiz during the Moorhead Phase. Plant macrofossils deposited in the gully by 10 14C ka BP provide the first information on early postglacial plant colonization of the distal Assiniboine delta. These data
suggest initial establishment of Scorpidium scorpioides, Potamogeton spp., Scirpus spp., and other wetland plants, followed
by colonization of uplands by a Picea-Populus assemblage. Importantly, because the gully is located in a protected depression
behind the Campbell beach, evidence of water table rise from aquatic macrophytes suggests that glacial Lake Agassiz transgressed
to the Campbell level during the early Emerson Phase (∼10 14C ka BP). Furthermore, no evidence exists for a post-Lockhart rise in Lake Agassiz above the Upper Campbell beach. If Agassiz
stood at the Campbell level during the early Emerson Phase, then drainage through the southern outlet may have been possible
at this time. This scenario, if true, may suggest that the northwestern outlet was temporarily closed by a glacial advance
shortly before 10 14C ka BP.

West Hawk Lake (WHL) is located within the glacial Lake Agassiz basin, 140 km east of Winnipeg, Manitoba. The small lake lies
in a deep, steep-sided, meteorite impact crater, which has been partly filled by 60 m of sediment that today forms a flat
floor in the central part of the basin below 111 m of water. Four cores, 5–11 m in length, were collected using a Kullenberg
piston gravity corer. All sediment is clay, contains no unconformities, and has low organic content in all but the upper meter.
Sample analyses include bulk and clay mineralogy, major and minor elements, TOC, stable isotopes of C, N, and O, pollen, charcoal,
diatoms, and floral and faunal macrofossils. The sequence is divided into four units based mainly on thickness and style of
lamination, diatoms, and pollen. AMS radiocarbon dates do not provide a clear indication of age in the postglacial sequence;
possible explanations include contamination by older organic inwash and downward movement of younger organic acids. A chronological
framework was established using only selected AMS dates on plant macrofossils, combined with correlations to dated events
outside the basin and paleotopographic reconstructions of Lake Agassiz. The 822 1-cm-thick varves in the lower 8 m of the
cored WHL sequence were deposited just prior to 10,000 cal years BP (∼8,900 14C years BP), during the glacial Lake Agassiz phase of the lake. The disappearance of dolomite near the top of the varved sequence
reflects the reduced influence of Lake Agassiz and the carbonate bedrock and glacial sediment in its catchment. The lowermost
varves are barren of organisms, indicating cold and turbid glacial lake waters, but the presence of benthic and planktonic
algae in the upper 520 varves indicates warming; this lake phase coincides with a change in clay mineralogy, δ18O and δ13C in cellulose, and in some other parameters. This change may have resulted from a major drawdown in Lake Agassiz when its
overflow switched from northwest to east after formation of the Upper Campbell beach of that lake 9,300–9,400 14C years ago. The end of thick varve deposition at ∼10,000 cal years BP is related to the opening of a lower eastern outlet
of Lake Agassiz and an accompanying drop in West Hawk Lake level. WHL became independent from Lake Agassiz at this time, sedimentation
rates dropped, and only ∼2.5 m of sediment was deposited in the next 10,000 years. During the first two centuries of post-Lake
Agassiz history, there were anomalies in the diatom assemblage, stable O and C isotopes, magnetic susceptibility, and other
parameters, reflecting an unstable watershed. Modern oligotrophic conditions were soon established; charcoal abundance increased
in response to the reduced distance to the shoreline and to warmer conditions. Regional warming after ∼9,500 cal years BP
is indicated by pollen and diatoms as well as C and O isotope values. Relatively dry conditions are suggested by a rise in
pine and decrease in spruce and other vegetation types between 9,500 and 5,000 cal years BP (∼8,500–4,400 14C years BP), plus a decrease in δ13Ccell values. After this, there was a shift to slightly cooler and wetter conditions. A large increase in organic content and change
in elemental concentration in the past several thousand years probably reflects a decline in supply of mineral detritus to
the basin and possibly an increase in productivity. 相似文献

Diatom-inferred lake level from near-shore cores in a drainage lake from the Experimental Lakes Area, northwestern Ontario,Canada 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We inferred late Holocene lake-level changes from a suite of near-shore gravity cores collected in Lake 239 (Rawson Lake),
a headwater lake in the Experimental Lakes Area, northwestern Ontario. Results were reproduced across all cores. A gravity
core from the deep central basin was very similar to the near-shore cores with respect to trends in the percent abundance
of the dominant diatom taxon, Cylcotella stelligera. The central basin, however, does not provide a sensitive site for reconstruction of lake-level changes because of the insensitivity
of the diatom model at very high percentages of C. stelligera and other planktonic taxa. Quantitative estimates of lake level are based on a diatom-inferred depth model that was developed
from surficial sediments collected along several depth transects in Lake 239. The lake-level reconstructions during the past
~3,000 years indicate that lake depth varied on average by ±2 m from present-day conditions, with maximum rises of ~3–4 m
and maximum declines of ~3.5–5 m. The diatom-inferred depth record indicates several periods of persistent low levels during
the nineteenth century, from ~900 to 1100 AD, and for extended periods prior to ~1,500 years ago. Periods of inferred high
lake levels occurred from ~500 to 900 AD and ~1100 to 1650 AD. Our findings suggest that near-shore sediments from small drainage
lakes in humid climates can be used to assess long-term fluctuations in lake level and water availability. 相似文献

Detailed mapping and elevation measurements of glacial lake shorelines in the Flin Flon region has permitted the reconstruction of 6 well-defined levels of Lake Agassiz formed around 8.3 ka to 7.9 ka 14C BP. The Stonewall, The Pas, Gimli, Grand Rapids, Drunken Point and Ponton paleo-water planes have been tilted upward to the northeast in the Holocene, with gradients decreasing, from the highest to the lowest level, from about 0.34 m km-1 to 0.22 m km-1 in the study area. The Setting level, lower than the Ponton but less well defined, is also documented here for the first time. This mapping conclusively refutes the view, entrenched in the literature from the 1890's to the 1960's, that there has been negligible differential uplift in the region following final drainage of Lake Agassiz. The finding has major consequences regarding correlation of glacial lakes across the mid-continent, the post-glacial history of large lakes in the region, and for interpretation of earth rheology and its implications for ice sheet reconstruction. 相似文献

Pollen analysis of 3.25 m of late glacial and Holocene sediments gives a mid‐altitude (600 m) record of vegetation development after the last or Margaret Glaciation. Alpine herbfield, coniferous heath and Nothofagus gunnli scrub developed on the moraines until 11,400 BP. Wet montane forest and heath then developed with Phyllocladus aspleniifolius, Nothofagus cunninghamii and Eucalyptus until c. 10,000 BP. After 10,000 BP a mosaic of N. cunninghamii rainforest, Myrtaceae and Proteaceae scrub and Sprengelia incarnata heath occurred. The development of the vegetation from alpine communities to temperate rainforest, which is near its limit at 600 m, occurred under the influence of improving climatic conditions with rapid upslope migration or local expansion of taxa during the late glacial. Temperatures were warm enough for the development of rainforest at 600 m by 10,000 BP, if not earlier. The development of a mosaic of rainforest, scrub and heath vegetation rather than extensive rainforest after 10,000 BP reflects the influence of poor soils, bad drainage and fires. Comparison with similar pollen diagrams from western Tasmania suggests that the development of pollen/vegetation associations was time transgressive with altitude during the late glacial when climatic influences and migration rates were important, and that the mosaic of vegetation communities became more complex during the Holocene because of adjustment to or control by local ecological factors. 相似文献

Diatom assemblage response to Iroquoian and Euro-Canadian eutrophication of Crawford Lake,Ontario, Canada 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Diatom and geochemical data from Crawford Lake, Ontario, have been used to document limnological responses to periods of cultural
disturbance resulting from native Iroquoian occupation of the watershed (1268–1486 AD) and Euro-Canadian agriculture and deforestation
(1867 AD–present). Here, we further develop the high-resolution nature of the Crawford Lake sediment record to examine the
physical, chemical and biological aspects of limnological response to human disturbances in the lake catchment area with exceptional
detail. We report detailed diatom abundance and flux data for individual taxa from Crawford Lake, and further describe the
relationship between assemblage composition and environmental conditions using canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). Diatom
assemblage data are used to calculate diatom inferred-total phosphorus (DI-TP) concentrations for the past ∼1,000 years. We
also examine the diatom community response during and after periods of disturbance by Iroquoian and Euro-Canadian populations,
and compare this response to existing geochemical proxies of lake production and new elemental geochemical indicators of catchment
area erosion. In particular, we explore the differing limnological response to the two distinct periods of cultural eutrophication
and examine the limnological processes that occurred during the period of␣low (or no) human activity (1487–1866 AD), when
geochemical indicators of lake production recovered to pre-disturbance conditions, but diatom assemblages notably did not.
Our results illustrate the highly susceptible nature of diatom communities to periods of anthropogenic disturbance, and emphasize
that ecological indicators (such as diatom assemblages) should be included with other proxies (such as nutrient concentrations
and physical characteristics) when assessing disturbance and recovery in lake systems. 相似文献

Climate of the past millennium inferred from varved proglacial lake sediments on northeast Baffin Island,Arctic Canada 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study uses 239+240Pu-dated varved sediments from Big Round Lake, a proglacial lake on northeast Baffin Island, Arctic Canada to generate a 1000-year-long,
annual-resolution record of past climate. Varve thickness is positively correlated with July–August–September temperature
measured at Clyde River, 70 km to the north of the lake (r = 0.46, p < 0.001). We therefore interpret the variability and trends in varve thickness to partially represent summer temperature.
The coolest Little Ice Age temperatures occurred in this record from 1575 to 1760 AD and were approximately 1.5°C cooler than
today (average from 1995 to 2005 AD) and 0.2°C cooler than the last millennium (average from 1000 to 2000 AD). Pre-twentieth-century
warmth occurred during two intervals, 970–1150 AD and 1375–1575 AD; temperatures were approximately 1.2°C cooler than today,
but 0.1°C warmer than the last millennium. The Big Round Lake varve-thickness record contains features similar to that reconstructed
elsewhere in the eastern Canadian Arctic. This high-resolution quantitative record expands our understanding of arctic climate
during the past millennium.

The post-glacial history of Lake Pieni-Kuuppalanlampi, western Lake Ladoga region, was studied by means of stratigraphic pollen and diatom analyses. Diatoms were analysed to track the isolation history of the basin and the limnological effects of the early land-use phases indicated by pollen analysis. Chrysophycean stomatocysts and Isoëtes spores were also employed in the limnological reconstructions. Sediment dating was provided by six conventional radiocarbon dates. The lower part of the 370-cm long sediment sequence represents early Holocene, large lake conditions: the (freshwater) Yoldia and Ancylus stages of the Baltic basin, with a short-term lagoonal or isolation phase at the end of Yoldia. The basin was isolated due to Ancylus lake regression at 9785 cal B.P. For the small-lake sequence (0–250 cm) we used diatom inferences (WA-method) for hindcasting water chemistry. The post-isolation limnology of Pieni-Kuuppalanlampi reflects the development of vegetation on its small hill-top catchment. In its early development, the lake was mesotrophic, but became more acidic (pH about 6) and oligotrophic after the decline of temperate hardwood trees and the spread of spruce to the area after around 5000 B.P. The lake ecosystem appears to have reacted sensitively to agricultural land-use in the catchment from AD 400–800 onwards: inferred total phosphorus levels and pH both rise during these periods. 相似文献

The Yangtze River Source Region has an area of 137,704 km2.Its mean annual runoff of 12.52 billion m3,which was recorded by the Chumda Hydrological Station in 1961-2000,accounts for only 0.13 percent of the Yangtze River’s total annual streamflow. The extensive rivers, lakes, wetlands, glaciers, snow fields, and permafrost of the Yangtze River Source Region,as well as the region’s vast alpine grasslands, play a critical role in storing and regulating the flow of water not only in the upper Yangtze River watershed of Qinghai,Sichuan, the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) (Tibet) and Yunnan, but also throughout the entire lower Yangtze River basin.Climate change has been the dominant factor in recent fluctuation in the volume of the Yangtze River Source Region’s glacier resources. The Chumda Hydrological Station on the lower Tongtian River has registered a mean annual glacial meltwater of 1.13 billion m3 for the period 1961-2000,makes up 9 percent of the total annual runoff.Glacial meltwater makes up a significant percentage of streamflow in the Yangtze River Source Region, the major rivers of the upper Yangtze River Source Region:the Togto,Dam Chu,Garchu, and Bi Chu (Bu Chu) rivers all originate at large glaciers along the Tanggula Range.Glaciers in the Yangtze River Source Region are typical continental-type glaciers with most glacial meltwater flow occurring June-August;the close correlation between June-August river flows and temperature illustrates the important role of glacial meltwater in feeding rivers.Glaciers in the source region have undergone a long period of rapid ablation beginning in 1993.Examination of flow and temperature data for the 1961-2000 period shows that the annual melting period for glacial ice, snow, and frozen ground in the Yangtze River Source Region now begins earlier because of increasing spring temperatures, resulting in the reduction of summer flood season peak runoffs;meanwhile, increased rates of glacier ablation have resulted in more uneven annual distribution of runoff in the source region.T 相似文献

Water chemistry and surface sediments were analyzed from 41 shallow lakes representing three previously-defined hydrological
categories in the Slave River Delta, Northwest Territories, Canada, in order to identify relationships between hydrological
and limnological conditions and their associations with recently deposited diatom assemblages. Evaporation-dominated lakes are physically removed from the influence of the Slave River, and are characterized by high alkalinity and high concentrations
of nutrients and ions. In contrast, flood-dominated lakes tend to receive a pulse of floodwater from the Slave River during the spring thaw and have low alkalinity and low concentrations
of most nutrients and ions. Exchange-dominated lakes are variably influenced by floodwaters from the Slave River and seiche events from Great Slave Lake throughout the
spring thaw and open-water season, and are characterized by a broad array of limnological conditions that are largely dependent
on the strength of the connection to these sources of floodwater. Specific diatom ‘indicator’ taxa have been identified that
can discriminate these three hydrological lake categories. Evaporation-dominated lakes are associated with high relative abundance
of common epiphytic diatom taxa, while diatoms indicative of flood- and exchange-dominated lakes span a wide range of habitat
types (epiphytic, benthic) but also include unique planktonic diatoms (Stephanodiscus and Cyclostephanos taxa) that were not found in surface sediments of evaporation-dominated lakes. The planktonic diatom taxa originate from
the Slave River, and thus are indicative of river influence. In complex, remote, freshwater ecosystems like the Slave River
Delta, integration of results from hydrological and limnological approaches provides a necessary foundation to assess present,
past and future hydroecological responses to changes in river discharge and climate. 相似文献
