We propose a kinematic approach to searching for the stars that could be formed with the Sun in a common “parent” open cluster. The approach consists in preselecting suitable candidates by the closeness of their space velocities to the solar velocity and analyzing the parameters of their encounters with the solar orbit in the past in a time interval comparable to the lifetime of stars. We consider stars from the Hipparcos catalog with available radial velocities. The Galactic orbits of stars have been constructed in the Allen-Santillan potential by taking into account the perturbations from the spiral density wave. We show that two stars, HIP 87382 and HIP 47399, are of considerable interest in our problem. Their orbits oscillate near the solar orbit with an amplitude of ≈250 pc; there are short-term close encounters to distances <10 pc. Both stars have an evolutionary status and metallicity similar to the solar ones.  相似文献

The spiral pattern of the Galaxy, identified by analyzing the kinematics of young stars within 3 kpc of the Sun, is Fourier decomposed into spiral harmonics. The spiral pattern of the Galaxy is shown to be representable as a superposition of trailing and leading waves with interarm distances of λ = 1.8 ± 0.4 and 4 ± 2 kpc, respectively. Shock waves are probably present only in the portions of the trailing spiral pattern where it crosses the crest of the leading wave. The small interarm distance of the trailing spiral wave (λ = 1.8 kpc) can be explained by its evolution—by the decrease in the interarmd istance as the wave is displaced toward the inner Lindblad resonance. The Carina arm may be part of this resonance ring.  相似文献

Most rapidly and differentially rotating disk galaxies, in which the sound speed (thermal velocity dispersion) is smaller than the orbital velocity, display graceful spiral patterns. Yet, over almost 240 yr after their discovery in M51 by Charles Messier, we still do not fully understand how they originate. In this first paper of a series, the dynamical behavior of a rotating galactic disk is examined numerically by a high-order Godunov hydrodynamic code. The code is implemented to simulate a two-dimensional flow driven by an internal Jeans gravitational instability in a nonresonant wave–“fluid” interaction in an infinitesimally thin disk composed of stars or gas clouds. A goal of this work is to explore the local and linear regimes of density wave formation, employed by Lin, Shu, Yuan and many others in connection with the problem of spiral pattern of rotationally supported galaxies, by means of computer-generated models and to compare those numerical results with the generalized fluid-dynamical wave theory. The focus is on a statistical analysis of time-evolution of density wave structures seen in the simulations. The leading role of collective processes in the formation of both the circular and spiral density waves (“heavy sound”) is emphasized. The main new result is that the disk evolution in the initial, quasilinear stage of the instability in our global simulations is fairly well described using the local approximation of the generalized wave theory. Certain applications of the simulation to actual gas-rich spiral galaxies are also explored.  相似文献

The spatial structure and stability properties of the coupled Alfvén and drift compressional modes in a space plasma are studied in a gyrokinetic framework in a model taking into account field-line curvature and plasma and magnetic field inhomogeneity across the magnetic shells. The perturbation is found to be localized in two transparent regions, the Alfvén and drift compressional transparent regions, where the wave vector radial component squared is positive. Both regions are bounded by the resonance and cut-off surfaces, where the wave vector radial component turns into infinity and zero, respectively. An existence of the drift compressional resonance is one of the most important results of this work. It is argued that on the surface of this resonance the longitudinal and azimuthal components of the wave's magnetic field have a pole and logarithmic singularities, respectively. The instability conditions and expressions for the growth rate of the coupled modes have been obtained. In the Alfvénic transparent region, an instability occurs in the presence of the negative plasma temperature gradient. This instability does not lead to a non-stationary wave behavior: all the energy gained from the resonance particles was finally absorbed owing to any dissipation process. In a drift compressional transparent region, a necessary condition for the instability is the growth of the temperature with the radial coordinate. The growth rate is almost independent of the radial coordinate, which means that the wave energy gained from the particles cannot disappear. It will lead to an ever increasing wave amplitude, and no stationary picture for the unstable drift compressional mode is possible.  相似文献

The density wave theory predicted some physical offsets among different tracers of star formation. To test this prediction, here we compiled data on 40 galaxies searched observationally for a physical offset between spiral arm tracers, and found that 24 of them have a positive offset. In a spiral arm, an arm tracer in a region with a given temperature may be at a different location (offset) than an arm tracer in a region with a colder temperature. Some conditions are found to be necessary or sufficient in order to detect an offset between two arm tracers. To find the offset of a tracer from another tracer, one needs a proper linear resolution. Starting in the dust lane and going across the spiral arm, we seek the observed physical width of the star-forming zone (offset). In our sample of 24 galaxies with measured offsets, we find offsets with a median value near 326 pc and a mean near 370 pc. These offsets are comparable to those found in our Milky Way galaxy, between the cold diffuse CO 1–0 gas set at 0 pc, and the hot dust near 350 pc.Preliminary statistics are performed on the angular velocity of the gas and stars and angular velocity of the spiral pattern. Their observed orbital velocity of 200 km/s at a typical galactic radius near 4 kpc yields an angular speed of the gas and stars near 60 km/s/kpc. Their deduced angular rotation for the spiral pattern averages 36 km/s/kpc. These observational results are close to the results predicted by the shock-induced star-forming density wave theory. These mean or median property values will be useful for finding other galaxies that can support density waves.  相似文献

We present an outline of our study of the effects of star formation on the different components of the interstellar medium in the discs of spiral galaxies, both globally and as a function of arm and interarm environment. We are in the process of obtaining images of 57 spiral galaxies at low inclinations, and analysing them to study the distribution of recent massive star formation, old stars, young stars, gas and dust. We will dissect the images into arm and interarm regions and compare and contrast the morphology and scale lengths within these regions inHα, HI, the near infrared, optical and (where available) CO. Modelling will show how the scale lengths are affected by star formation, how this differs between arms and interarms, and whether the Schmidt Law varies from the global values in the arm and interarm regions. Carbon monoxide observations of neutral matter near W3 provide an excellent example of the formative process for O stars. As in other regions where O stars are forming, the young stars in W3 are located in dense cloud fragments that are at the edge of an extended molecular cloud complex. This peculiar formation site is simply explained in terms of a million year old shock that probably surrounds the expanding H II region IC1805. The contrast between this situation for W3 and what is found in other star-forming regions where only low mass stars occur is emphasized.Paper presented at the conference on Protostars and Planets, held at the Planetary Science Institute, University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona, between January 3 and 7, 1978.  相似文献

N-body simulations performed by us suggest a mechanism for the generation of spiral waves in galaxies in which a mutual quasi-ellipsoidal rotating equilibrium configuration increasing slowly by accretion from the surrounding disk influences the density distribution of stars in the disk such as to give rise to a trailing spiral density wave. Interaction of the spiral wave with the viscous interstellar gas and mutual gravitation between the stars in the disk are believed to influence the form of the spiral. Nevertheless the basic assumption of conventional density wave theory according to which the mutual interaction of stars in the disk is essential for the formation of spirals may not be true.  相似文献

A one-armed spiral bending wave in Saturn's rings excited by Titan's −1:0 inner vertical resonance is one of the most prominent oscillatory features observed by Voyager 1 . We study detailed dynamics of the particles inside the ring, and show that one of the main causes of the complete dissipation of the bending wave within a distance of ∼85 km from the resonance site could be as a result of the presence of a strong shear caused by radial velocity variation along the vertical direction. Assuming this to be the only source, Voyager data would suggest that if the surface density of matter is around 0.45 g cm−2 and the amplitude of the bending wave is around 1200 m, then the upper limit of total vertical thickness of the C ring near this resonance is around 40 m.  相似文献

We consider a differentially rotating, 2D stellar disc perturbed by two steady-state spiral density waves moving at different pattern speeds. Our investigation is based on direct numerical integration of initially circular test-particle orbits. We examine a range of spiral strengths and spiral speeds and show that stars in this time-dependent gravitational field can be heated (their random motions increased). This is particularly noticeable in the simultaneous propagation of a two-armed spiral density wave near the corotation resonance (CR), and a weak four-armed one near the inner and outer 4:1 Lindblad resonances. In simulations with two spiral waves moving at different pattern speeds, we find: (i) the variance of the radial velocity,  σ2 R   , exceeds the sum of the variances measured from simulations with each individual pattern; (ii)  σ2 R   can grow with time throughout the entire simulation; (iii)  σ2 R   is increased over a wider range of radii compared to that seen with one spiral pattern; and (iv) particles diffuse radially in real space, whereas they do not when only one spiral density wave is present. Near the CR with the stronger, two-armed pattern, test-particles are observed to migrate radially. These effects take place at or near resonances of both spirals, so we interpret them as the result of stochastic motions. This provides a possible new mechanism for increasing the stellar velocity dispersion in galactic discs. If multiple spiral patterns are present in the Galaxy, we predict that there should be large variations in the stellar velocity dispersion as a function of radius.  相似文献

As it is already known, the spectra of many Oe and Be stars present Discrete Absorption Components (DACs) which, because of their profiles' width as well as the values of the expansion / contraction velocities, they create a complicated profile of the main spectral lines. This fact is interpreted by the existence of two or more independent layers of matter, in the region where the main spectral lines are formed. Such a structure is responsible for the formation of a series of satellite components (DACs) for each main spectral line. In this paper we present a first approximation to a mathematical model reproducing the complex profile of the spectral lines of Oe and Be stars that present DACs. This model presupposes that the regions, where these spectral lines are formed, are not continuous but consist of a number of independent absorbing density layers of matter, followed by an emission region and an external general absorption region. When we fit the spectral lines that present DACs, with this model, we can calculate the values of the apparent rotation and expansion / contraction velocities of the regions where the DACs are formed. We investigate regions near the ends of the principal spiral arms in SB galaxies, where the non-axially symmetric part of the gravitational potential rapidly transforms to its asymptotic quadrupole form. The galactic disk responds to this transformation of the potential by forming nearly circular spirals with an angular extent of the order of π/2 (quarter-turn spirals). We consider the resonance mechanism for the formation of principal spirals. Expressions are derived for the resonance responses of disks with circular and nearly circular stellar orbits.  相似文献

In differentially rotating discs with no self-gravity, density waves cannot propagate around the corotation, where the wave pattern rotation speed equals the fluid rotation rate. Waves incident upon the corotation barrier may be super-reflected (commonly referred to as corotation amplifier), but the reflection can be strongly affected by wave absorptions at the corotation resonance/singularity. The sign of the absorption is related to the Rossby wave zone very near the corotation radius. We derive the explicit expressions for the complex reflection and transmission coefficients, taking into account wave absorption at the corotation resonance. We show that for generic discs, this absorption plays a much more important role than wave transmission across the corotation barrier. Depending on the sign of the gradient of the vortensity of the disc,  ζ=κ2/(2ΩΣ)  (where Ω is the rotation rate, κ is the epicyclic frequency and Σ is the surface density), the corotation resonance can either enhance or diminish the super-reflectivity, and this can be understood in terms of the location of the Rossby wave zone relative to the corotation radius. Our results provide the explicit conditions (in terms of disc thickness, rotation profile and vortensity gradient) for which super-reflection can be achieved. Global overstable disc modes may be possible for discs with super-reflection at the corotation barrier.  相似文献

Substorm onsets and intensifications are accompanied on a one-to-one basis by a Pi 2 magnetic pulsation burst. The source region for these pulsations is generally thought to lie in the region of substorm disturbance in the auroral oval. In this paper we outline the characteristics of Pi 2 pulsations in regions near the substorm enhanced electrojet but removed from the locale of the westward travelling surge. We show that a resonance region for the pulsations lies at the equatorwad edge of the westward electrojet, which in the evening sector marks the locus of the Harang discontinuity. Finally we show examples where the maximum amplitude of the Pi 2 is located at or equatorward of the southern border of the eastward electrojet or at the southern border of the westward electrojet. This is clear evidence for the coupling of wave energy into the L-shells far distant from the source of the energy. Mechanisms for Pi 2 generation are discussed in the context of the results presented in this paper.  相似文献

From the XHIP catalogue, we have selected 1872 F-G-K stars with relative parallax measurement errors <20% and absolute values of their space velocities relative to the Sun <15 km s?1. For all these stars, we have constructed their Galactic orbits for 4.5 Gyr into the past using an axisymmetric Galactic potential model with allowance made for the perturbations from the spiral density wave. Parameters of the encounter with the solar orbit have been calculated for each orbit. We have detected three new stars whose Galactic orbits were close to the solar one during a long time interval in the past. These stars are HIP 43852, HIP 104047, and HIP 112158. The spectroscopic binary HIP 112158 is poorly suited for the role of a kinematic sibling of the Sun by its age and spectroscopic characteristics. For the single star HIP 43852 and the multiple system HIP 104047, this role is quite possible. We have also confirmed the status of our previously found candidates for close encounters, HIP 47399 and HIP 87382. The star HIP 87382 with a chemical composition very close to the solar one is currently the most likely candidate, because it persistently shows close encounters with the Sun on time scales of more than 3 Gyr when using various Galactic potential models both without and with allowance made for the influence of the spiral density wave.  相似文献

Stellar abundances of beryllium are useful in different areas of astrophysics, including studies of the Galactic chemical evolution, of stellar evolution, and of the formation of globular clusters. Determining Be abundances in stars is, however, a challenging endeavor. The two Be II resonance lines useful for abundance analyses are in the near UV, a region strongly affected by atmospheric extinction. CUBES is a new spectrograph planned for the VLT that will be more sensitive than current instruments in the near UV spectral region. It will allow the observation of fainter stars, expanding the number of targets where Be abundances can be determined. Here, a brief review of stellar abundances of Be is presented together with a discussion of science cases for CUBES. In particular, preliminary simulations of CUBES spectra are presented, highlighting its possible impact in investigations of Be abundances of extremely metal-poor stars and of stars in globular clusters.  相似文献

The formation of spiral structure in a galaxy, as a result of the gravitational perturbation caused by a permanent companion, is studied. It is found that spiral structure appears only when a resonance exists between the rotational frequency of the stars in the galaxy and the rotational frequency of the companion galaxy. The number of spiral arms depends strongly on the particular resonance. In the case where the companion moves in an elliptic orbit, spiral arms are formed when a resonance, inside the galactic body, exists in almost all the parts of the orbit or, at least, in the largest part of it.  相似文献

We perform a study into the spatial and kinematical distribution of young open clusters in the solar neighborhood, distinguishing between Gould Belt and local Galactic disk members. We use a previous estimate of the structural parameters of both systems obtained from a sample of O to B6 stars from Hipparcos. The two star-forming regions that dominate and give the Gould Belt its characteristic inclined shape show a striking difference in their content of star clusters: while Ori OB1 is richly populated by open clusters, not a single one can be found within the boundaries of Sco OB2. This is mirrored in velocity space, translating again into an abundance of clusters in the region of the kinematic space populated by the members of Ori OB1, and a marginal number of them associated with Sco OB2. We interpret all these differences by characterizing the Orion region as a cluster complex typically surrounded by a stellar halo, and the Sco-Cen region as an OB association in the outskirts of the complex. The different contents of star clusters, the different heights above the Galactic plane and the different residual velocities of Ori OB1 and Sco OB2 can be explained in terms of their relative position with respect to the density maximum of the Local Arm in the solar neighborhood. The origin of this feature could have been the interaction of a density wave with the local interstellar medium close to the Galactic co-rotation radius.  相似文献
