Neutrino capture rate data from the Homestake chlorine experiment (1970–1990) has been spectrally analysed. The data were smoothed by a 4-month equally-spaced sequence and by a cubic spline polynomial approximation. Fourier (FFT), maximum entropy spectrum analysis (MESA), and power spectrum analysis (PSA) employing the Blackman-Tukey window were used. The significant periodicities obtained are: 1 ± 0.1, 1.4 ± 0.2, 2.4 ± 0.2, 5 ± 0.2, and 11 ± 1.5 years. A possible correlation with similar coincident periods in other solar-terrestrial phenomena is discussed.  相似文献

Spectral analysis of 18O values from V28–239 pacific ocean deep-sea core has revealed periodicities which correspond to those calculated for the eccentricity (400 and 100 Kyrs), the obliquity (41 Kyrs) and the climatic precession (23 and 19 Kyrs) as well as secondary ones spanning between 16 Kyrs to 1 million years. The methods of spectrum analysis applied were the maximum entropy, fourier and the successive approximations, where the periodicities are located and their amplitude defined. The significance and stationarity of the detected periods was examined by various tests as well as employing an evolutionary pseudosonogram. The dominant 100 Kyrs and 50 Kyrs periods are present throughout all the interval, the 30 Kyrs is at low variance during 1.2 to 2 million years interval, the precessional signal is not stationary and appears at about 600 Kyrs to 1820 Kyrs. This study shows the necessity of applying various spectral analysis techniques and several tests to extract the optimum of spectral information and also to test the stationarity of certain periodicities, especially when implied mechanisms of climatic cause and variability are involved.Deceased.  相似文献

We present a statistical analysis of the big blue bump (BBB) feature for a large heterogeneous sample of 95 optically selected and soft X-ray bright, low redshift active galactic nuclei (AGNs). This sample covers a sufficiently broad luminosity range, allowing us to test the luminosity dependence of the spectral energy distribution in the BBB region. Following the works of Zheng et al., Laor et al. and Kriss et al., we introduce the broad band spectral index from 1050 Å to0.5 keV (α UV-SX ), compare its distribution with that of the soft X-ray spectral index (α SX ) obtained by ROSAT PSPC, and find that the two indices have equal average-values within 1 ~ 2σuncertainties, whether in the whole sample, in luminosity divisions or in subsamples. These equalities also have no obvious luminosity dependence. This indicates that a single power law can describe the overall UV toX-ray spectrum in a statistical sense, or the broad band UV to soft X-ray spectrum is the soft X-ray spectral extension on an average. Thus, our results support Laor et al.'s conjecture about the BBB peak aroundFUV 1050 Å from a statistical viewpoint. As we further test whether the equality holds for individual objects within measure errors, χ2 test refuse to accept it. In addition, our statistical results, from the luminosity divisions and on the correlation of spectral indices with luminosity (M B), imply that the luminosity dependence of α UV and α UV-SX is mainly due to absorption in low luminosity AGNs.  相似文献

We investigate the X-ray and optical properties of a sample of X-ray bright sources from the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) Wing Survey. We have detected two new pulsars with pulse periods of 65.8 s (CXOU J010712.6−723533) and 700 s (CXOU J010206.6−714115), and present observations of two previously known pulsars RX J0057.3−7325 (SXP101) and SAX J0103.2−7209 (SXP348). Our analysis has led to three new optical identifications for the detected pulsars. We find long-term optical periods for two of the pulsars, CXOU J010206.6−714115 and SXP101, of 267 and 21.9 d, respectively. Spectral analysis of a subset of the sample shows that the pulsars have harder spectra than the other sources detected. By employing a quantile-based colour–colour analysis we are able to separate the detected pulsars from the rest of the sample. Using archival catalogues we have been able to identify counterparts for the majority of the sources in our sample. Combining this with our results from the temporal analysis of the Chandra data and archival optical data, the X-ray spectral analysis, and by determining the X-ray to optical flux ratios we present preliminary classifications for the sources. In addition to the four detected pulsars, our sample includes two candidate foreground stars, 12 probable active galactic nuclei, and five unclassified sources.  相似文献

We have conducted laboratory experiments as an analogue to planetary XRF (X-ray fluorescence) missions in order to investigate the role of changing incidence (and phase) angle geometry and sample grain-size on the intensity of XRF from regolith-like samples. Our data provide evidence of a grain-size effect, where XRF line intensity decreases with increasing sample grain-size, as well as an almost ubiquitous increase in XRF line intensity above incidence angles of ∼60°. Data from a lunar regolith simulant are also used to test the accuracy of an XRF abundance algorithm developed at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), which is used to estimate the major element abundance of the lunar surface from Chandrayaan-1 X-ray Spectrometer (C1XS) XRF data. In ideal situations (i.e., when the input spectrum is well defined and the XRF spectrum has a sufficient signal to noise ratio) the algorithm can recover a known rock composition to within 1.0 elemental wt% (1σ).  相似文献

We present the data and analysis of VLBI observations at 1.6, 5 and 15 GHz of a sample of faint gigahertz peaked spectrum (GPS) sources selected from the Westerbork Northern Sky Survey. The 5-GHz observations involved a global array of 16 stations and yielded data on the total sample of 47 sources. A subsample of 26 GPS sources with peak frequencies     and/or peak flux densities     was observed with the VLBA at 15 GHz. A second subsample of 29 sources, with     was observed at 1.6 GHz using a 14-station global VLBI array. In this way, 44 of the 47 sources (94 per cent) in the sample were observed above and at or below their spectral peak. Spectral decomposition allowed us to identify three, 11, seven and two objects as compact symmetric objects, compact doubles, core–jet and complex sources, respectively. However, many of the sources classified as compact double or core–jet sources show only two components making their classification rather tentative. This may explain why the strong morphological dichotomy of GPS quasars and galaxies found for radio-bright GPS sources is not as clear in this faint sample.  相似文献

We present an X-ray spectral analysis of a sample of eight bona fide Seyfert 2 galaxies, selected on the basis of their high [O  iii ] λ 5007 flux, from the Ho et al. spectroscopic sample of nearby galaxies. We find that, in general, the X-ray spectra of our Seyfert 2 galaxies are complex, with some of our objects having spectra different from the 'typical' spectrum of X-ray selected Seyfert 2 galaxies. Two (NGC 3147 and 4698) show no evidence for intrinsic absorption. We suggest that this is a result of the fact that when the torus suppresses the intrinsic medium and hard energy flux, underlying emission from the host galaxy, originating in circumnuclear starbursts, and scattering from warm absorbers contributes in these energy bands more significantly. Our ASCA data alone cannot discriminate whether low-absorption objects are Compton-thick active galactic nuclei (AGNs) with a strong scattered component or lack an obscuring torus. The most striking example of our low absorption Seyfert 2 is NGC 4698. Its spectrum could be explained by either a dusty warm absorber or a lack of broad-line clouds so that its appearance as a Seyfert 2 is intrinsic and not a result of absorption.  相似文献

The pseudo-luminosity effect in the metallic line A-type stars found by Abt & Morgan (1976) is confirmed in a random sample of 27 Am stars. From a morphological study of their spectra in the wavelength interval 3850-4400 Å at a reciprocal dispersion of 66 Å/mm, revised spectral types are given on the MK system for their K-line and metallic-line spectra. This shows that: (a) our segregation of weak Am from the Am stars largely agrees with that by Cowleyet al. (1969); (b) all the stars in the sample are dwarfs according to their K-line classification; (c) more than 80 per cent exhibit the pseudo-luminosity effect significantly, with their metallic-line spectra resembling a giant or even a supergiant in the violet (3850-4100 Å), and a giant rather than a dwarf in the blue region (4260-4400 Å); (d) in two-thirds of the stars under (c), the Sr n 4077 Å line is found to have a markedly brighter luminosity class compared to any region, and in more than one-third of the sample it is comparable to that in Ap stars; (e) at least five stars exhibit characteristics which might suggest a spectrum variability: among these, the most striking example is 41 Sex A which was found to show a phase-modulated spectrum variation hitherto unknown in Am stars; (f) the metallic-line spectra of another five stars appear to be similar to A-shell type in differing degrees; (g) less than 20 per cent of the sample comprises stars which do not show any significant differential luminosity effect; these stars might have been misclassified or perhaps they are in a quiescent state. We also confirm the conclusion arrived at by Böhm-Vitense & Johnson (1978) that all Am stars may vary and our observations suggest that groups may exist among them.

The results of a comprehensive analysis of continuous radio spectra of a sample of Gigahertz-Peaked Spectrum (GPS) sources are reported. The sources are selected from a flux-density-complete sample (S ν ≥ 200 mJy at 4.8 or 5 GHz) using multifrequency measurements of the RATAN-600 radio telescope and data from the CATS astrophysical catalogs support system. The analysis revealed a very small number (1–2%) of “classical” GPS objects, which is significantly less than the expected fraction of 10%. GPS galaxies are found to have narrower and steeper radio spectra than quasars. The low-frequency part of the spectrum is seen to become steeper with increasing redshift. Galaxies and quasars at the same z have comparable angular sizes, whereas their luminosities may differ by one order of magnitude. At large redshifts there is a deficit of objects with low (several GHZ) peak frequencies. The number of GPS galaxies decreases sharply with redshift, and most of them are found at z between 0.01 and 1.81. GPS quasars are found at large redshifts, from 0.11 to 3.99. A quarter of the sample consists of blazars whose spectra may temporarily have a convex shape when the object is in active state.  相似文献

A new sample of extra-Galactic radio sources having a peak in the continuous spectrum near 1 GHz has been compiled, using data available in the literature on their radio flux densities, and some characteristic parameters of radio sources in this sample have been calculated. The median value of the calculated spectral indices of radio sources in the sample is -0.95, the median flux density at the peak (Sm) is 465 mJy, and almost half the radio sources (14 out of 30) have ultrasteep spectra, for which the spectral indices in the high-frequency range are α <-1.0 (S ∝ vα). The slowly varying solar radio and X-ray emissions are considered theoretically and statistically concerning their significance as potential indicators of energy storage processes in active regions leading to large flare-burst events. A correlation analysis has been carried out in order to test different global emission parameters accessable by daily routine measurements regarding their connection with type IV bursts and proton flares. From all investigated quantities systematically best (though not very high) correlations have been verified for both the 3 cm radio and 0–8 Å X-ray fluxes. Increasing correlation coefficients resulted for running averages indicating possible storage processes over several days. There is some evidence favouring the assumption of a small contribution of nonthermal processes to the spectrum of the S-component at burst-active periods which possibly lead to the development of flare-burst instabilities.  相似文献

A method to rapidly estimate the Fourier power spectrum of a point distribution is presented. This method relies on a Taylor expansion of the trigonometric functions. It yields the Fourier modes from a number of fast Fourier transforms (FFTs), which is controlled by the order N of the expansion and by the dimension D of the system. In three dimensions, for the practical value   N = 3  , the number of FFTs required is 20.
We apply the method to the measurement of the power spectrum of a periodic point distribution that is a local Poisson realization of an underlying stationary field. We derive an explicit analytic expression for the spectrum, which allows us to quantify – and correct for – the biases induced by discreteness and by the truncation of the Taylor expansion, and to bound the unknown effects of aliasing of the power spectrum. We show that these aliasing effects decrease rapidly with the order N . For   N = 3  , they are expected to be, respectively, smaller than  ∼10−4  and 0.02 at half the Nyquist frequency and at the Nyquist frequency of the grid used to perform the FFTs. The only remaining significant source of errors is reduced to the unavoidable cosmic/sample variance due to the finite size of the sample.
The analytical calculations are successfully checked against a cosmological N -body experiment. We also consider the initial conditions of this simulation, which correspond to a perturbed grid. This allows us to test a case where the local Poisson assumption is incorrect. Even in that extreme situation, the third-order Fourier–Taylor estimator behaves well, with aliasing effects restrained to at most the per cent level at half the Nyquist frequency.
We also show how to reach arbitrarily large dynamic range in Fourier space (i.e. high wavenumber), while keeping statistical errors in control, by appropriately 'folding' the particle distribution.  相似文献

A Modular Assay System for Solar System Exploration (MASSE) is being developed to include sample handling, pre-treatment, separation and analysis of biological target compounds by both DNA and protein microarrays. To better design sensitive and accurate initial upstream sample handling of the MASSE instrument, experiments investigating the sensitivity and potential extraction bias of commercially available DNA extraction kits between classes of environmentally relevant prokaryotes such as gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli), gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus megatarium), and Archaea (Haloarcula marismortui) were performed. For extractions of both planktonic cultures and spiked Mars simulated regolith, FTA® paper demonstrated the highest sensitivity, with detection as low as 1×101 cells and 3.3×102 cells, respectively. In addition to the highest sensitivity, custom modified application of FTA® paper extraction protocol is the simplest in terms of incorporation into MASSE and displayed little bias in sensitivity with respect to prokaryotic cell type. The implementation of FTA paper for environmental microbiology investigations appears to be a viable and effective option potentially negating the need for other pre-concentration steps such as filtration and negating concerns regarding extraction efficiency of cells. In addition to investigations on useful technology for upstream sample handling in MASSE, we have also evaluated the potential for μTAS to be employed in the MASSE instrument by employing proprietary lab-on-a-chip development technology to investigate the potential for microfluidic cell lysis of different prokaryotic cells employing both chemical and biological lysis agents. Real-time bright-field microscopy and quantitative PMT detection indicated that that gram positive, gram negative and archaeal cells were effectively lyzed in a few seconds using the microfluidic chip protocol developed. This included employing a lysis buffer with components including lysozyme, Protease, Proteinase K, Tween-20 and TritonX-100. The effectiveness of antibiotics and other chemical lysis agents were also screened and demonstrated partial effectiveness on all three cell types. This work demonstrates a step wise approach to evaluating the efficacy and sensitivity of commercial macro-scale technology and state-of-the-art developmental microfluidic technology under consideration for incorporation into the remotely operated MASSE instrument currently under development at the Carnegie Institution of Washington.  相似文献

We examine the use of the TE cross-correlation power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) as a complementary test to detect primordial gravitational waves (PGWs). The first method used is based on the determination of the lowest multipole, ℓ0, where the TE power spectrum,   C TE  , first changes sign. The second method uses Wiener filtering on the CMB TE data to remove the density perturbations contribution to the TE power spectrum. In principle this leaves only the contribution of PGWs. We examine two toy experiments (one ideal and another more realistic) to see their ability to constrain PGWs using the TE power spectrum alone. We found that an ideal experiment, one limited only by cosmic variance, can detect PGWs with a ratio of tensor to scalar metric perturbation power spectra   r = 0.3  at 99.9 per cent confidence level using only the TE correlation. This value is comparable with current constraints obtained by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe based on the 2σ upper limits to the B-mode amplitude. We demonstrate that to measure PGWs by their contribution to the TE cross-correlation power spectrum in a realistic ground-based experiment when real instrumental noise is taken into account, the tensor-to-scalar ratio, r , should be approximately three times larger.  相似文献

Magnetohydrodynamic turbulence is thought to be responsible for producing complex, multiscale magnetic field distributions in solar active regions. Here we explore the multiscale properties of a number of evolving active regions using magnetograms from the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). The multifractal spectrum was obtained by using a modified box-counting method to study the relationship between magnetic-field multifractality and region evolution and activity. The initial emergence of each active region was found to be accompanied by characteristic changes in the multifractal spectrum. Specifically, the range of multifractal structures (D div) was found to increase during emergence, as was their significance or support (C div). Following this, a decrease in the range in multifractal structures occurred as the regions evolved to become large-scale, coherent structures. From the small sample considered, evidence was found for a direct relationship between the multifractal properties of the flaring regions and their flaring rate.  相似文献

We study a sample of bright, long Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) gamma-ray burst (GRB) light curves in the 200 s before the detection of the GRB prompt emission. We find that in a sizable fraction of cases (∼20 per cent) there is evidence of emission above the background coming from the same direction as the GRB. This emission is characterized by a softer spectrum with respect to the main spectrum and contains a small fraction (0.1–1 per cent) of the total event counts. The precursors have typical delays of several tens of seconds extending (in few cases) up to 200 s (the limit of the investigated period). Their spectra are typically non-thermal power-law spectra, aside from a few cases. Such long delays and the non-thermal origin of their spectra are hard to reconcile with any model for the progenitor.  相似文献

We present peculiar velocities for 85 clusters of galaxies in two large volumes at distances between 6000 and 15 000 km s−1 in the directions of Hercules–Corona Borealis and Perseus–Pisces–Cetus (the EFAR sample). These velocities are based on Fundamental Plane (FP) distance estimates for early-type galaxies in each cluster. We fit the FP using a maximum likelihood algorithm which accounts for both selection effects and measurement errors, and yields FP parameters with smaller bias and variance than other fitting procedures. We obtain a best-fitting FP with coefficients consistent with the best existing determinations. We measure the bulk motions of the sample volumes using the 50 clusters with the best-determined peculiar velocities. We find that the bulk motions in both regions are small, and consistent with zero at about the 5 per cent level. The EFAR results are in agreement with the small bulk motions found by Dale et al. on similar scales, but are inconsistent with pure dipole motions having the large amplitudes found by Lauer & Postman and Hudson et al. The alignment of the EFAR sample with the Lauer & Postman dipole produces a strong rejection of a large-amplitude bulk motion in that direction, but the rejection of the Hudson et al. result is less certain because their dipole lies at a large angle to the main axis of the EFAR sample. We employ a window function covariance analysis to make a detailed comparison of the EFAR peculiar velocities with the predictions of standard cosmological models. We find that the bulk motion of our sample is consistent with most cosmological models that approximately reproduce the shape and normalization of the observed galaxy power spectrum. We conclude that existing measurements of large-scale bulk motions provide no significant evidence against standard models for the formation of structure.  相似文献

We have used the Parkes Multibeam system and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to assemble a sample of 195 galaxies selected originally from their H  i signature to avoid biases against unevolved or low surface brightness objects. For each source nine intrinsic properties are measured homogeneously, as well as inclination and an optical spectrum. The sample, which should be almost entirely free of either misidentification or confusion, includes a wide diversity of galaxies ranging from inchoate, low surface brightness dwarfs to giant spirals. Despite this diversity there are five clear correlations among their properties. They include a common dynamical mass-to-light ratio within their optical radii, a correlation between surface brightness and luminosity and a common H  i surface density. Such correlation should provide strong constrains on models of galaxy formation and evolution.  相似文献
