The current study was taken up to investigate the utility of remote sensing and GIS tools for evaluation of Integrated Wasteland
Development Programme (IWDP) implemented during 1997–2001 in Katangidda Nala watershed, Chincholi taluk, Gulbarga district,
Karnataka. The study was carried out using IRS 1C, LISS III data of December 11, 1997 (pre-treatment) and November 15, 2002
(post-treatment) covering the watershed to assess the changes in land use / land cover and biomass that have changed over
a period of five years (1997–2002). The images were classified into different land use/land cover categories using supervised
classification by maximum likelihood algorithm. They were also classified into different biomass levels using Normalized Difference
Vegetation Index (NDVI) approach. The results indicated that the area under agriculture crops and forest land were increased
by 671 ha (5.7%) and 1,414 ha (11.94%) respectively. This is due to the fact that parts of wastelands and fallow lands were
brought into cultivation. This increase in the area may be attributed to better utilization of surface and ground waters,
adoption of soil and water conservation practices and changes in cropping pattern. The area under waste lands and fallow lands
decreased by 1,667 ha (14.07%) and 467 ha (3.94%), respectively. The vegetation vigour of the area was classified into three
classes using NDVI. Substantial increase in the area under high and low biomass levels was observed (502 ha and 19 ha respectively).
The benefit-cost analysis indicates that the use of remote sensing and GIS was 2.2 times cheaper than the conventional methods.
Thus, the repetitive coverage of the satellite data provides an excellent opportunity to monitor the land resources and evaluate
the land cover changes through comparison of images for the watershed at different periods. 相似文献

Runoff is one of the important hydrologic variables used in most of the water resources applications. The Soil Conservation
Service-Curve Number (SCS-CN) method is adopted for the estimation of surface runoff in the Mehadrigedda watershed area, Visakhapatnam
district, India using multispectral remote sensing data, curve number approach and normal rainfall data. The main source of
water in the Mehadrigedda watershed area is by rain, most of it drains off and only a little percolates into ground. The weighted
curve number is determined based on antecedent moisture condition (AMC)-II with an integration of hydrologic soil groups (HSGs)
and land use/land cover LULC categories. An integrated approach is applied to delineate the land use/land cover information
as adopted from NRSA classification. The recording of daily rainfall data during the years 1997–2006 is collected from Indian
Meteorological Department (IMD) rainguage center at Kottavalasa. It is observed that the annual rainfall-runoff relationship
during 1997–2006, which is indicating that the overall increase in runoff with the rainfall of the watershed area. Integration
of remote sensing (RS) and geographical infomation system (GIS) techniques provide reliable, accurate and up-to-date information
on land and water resources. 相似文献

Improper utilization of natural resources without any conservation work is the prime cause of the watershed deterioration. Fast developmental activities and population pressure in the hills of Khanapara?CBornihat area near Guwahati city (about 10?km east of Guwahati) results rapid alteration of the land use/land cover in the recent times. This also causes the growth of land use over the unsuitable topography. As a result, there is a general degradation of the natural resources within the area. So, urgent measures have to be adopted to take up the conservation measure for the management of natural resources. Watershed wise conservation is considered to be the most acceptable and convenient approach. In the context of watershed management, watershed prioritization gained importance in natural resource management. The present study makes an attempt to prioritize the sub-watersheds for adopting the conservation measure. The prioritization is based on land use and slope analysis using Remote Sensing and GIS techniques in Khanapara?CBornihat area of Assam and Meghalaya state (India). The study area of 323.17?sq. km is divided into three 5th order, four 4th order and two 3rd order sub-watersheds. Land use/Land cover change analysis of the sub-watersheds has been carried out using multi temporal data of SOI toposheets of 1972 and IRS LISS III imagery of 2006. The study shows the significance changes in land use pattern especially in settlement and forest lands from 1972 to 2006. Slope map of the sub-watersheds prepared from the contour values in the toposheets show the wide variation of slope in the area ranging from 0° to 87°. Based on the extent/nature of land use/land cover changes over time and land use/land cover??slope relationship analysis, the sub-watersheds are classified into three categories as high, medium and low in terms of priority for conservation and management of natural resources. 相似文献

The vegetation dynamics and land use/land cover types of Birantiya Kalan watershed located in the arid tracts of western Rajasthan have been characterized and evaluated using Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System (GIS). The watershed under study falls in the transitional plain of Luni Basin and is characterized by Aravali ranges in the eastern half and vast alluvial plains in the west. The land use/land cover types, as identified are cropland, fallow, forest, land with scrub, land without scrub, sandy area and the water body. Land with scrub occupied maximum area (39% area of the watershed) in 1996 in place of crop land which was dominant (43% of total area) in the year 1988. During eight years period, seasonal fallow land increased significantly and the areal extent of water body decreased to almost half. Vegetation vigour types have been classified into very poor, poor. moderate, good and very good categories. Moderate vigour type reduced from 62 to 27% and poor type increased from 34 to 68% during the period 1988 to 1996. Other vegetation vigour types have not shown any significant changes. To quantify the changes over the years in both vegetation and land use/land cover, weightages have been given to each type and composite values of both vegetation vigour and land use types for 1996 and 1988 have been calculated. It has been observed that the ratio for vegetation vigour has been found to be 0.85 showing that the overall vegetation have not improved after the treatment. The ratio for land use is found to be 1.01, which indicates negligible change in land use. 相似文献

Land use and land cover changes have as consequences several social, economic, and environmental impacts. The understanding of these changes allows a better planning of public policies in order to map and monitor areas more susceptible to environmental problems. This research presents an analysis of the land use and land cover changes of a watershed region located in the Brazilian Amazon, and an evaluation of their impacts on sediment yield. Land use/land cover maps for each of the analyzed time periods (1973, 1984, and 2005) were compiled using images obtained by MSS/Landsat-1, TM/Landsat-5, and the MODIS/Terra sensors. The sediment yield modeling was performed by dividing the watershed into homogeneous subregions. Each of the subregions received average attributes that were used as input parameters for the Universal Soil Loss Equation. The results revealed that up to 2005, around 40% of the study area was already deforested, replaced by agricultural activities. In some parts of the watershed these changes were responsible for an increase of up to 7 ton/ha in annual average sediment yield. This study was successful in providing an assessment of the magnitude and spatial distribution of the changes. 相似文献

Land use/land cover changes near HAzira Region, Gujarat using remote sensing satellite data 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Human activities have great influence on fragile coastal ecosystem. For sustainable use of coastal resources it is very important
to understand land use/land cover changes and its implications on coastal systems. Remote sensing data because of its synoptic,
multispectral and multi temporal nature can be a very good source for mapping, monitoring and understanding these changes.
IRS LISS III sensor data were used to find out the rate of land use/land cover changes in Hazira area near Surat, Gujarat.
Because of major industrial activities it has become a hot spot area which requires regular monitoring. In the present study,
land cover information of the period 1970–1972 from the Survey of India topographical maps, and satellite data of the year
1989 and 1999–2002 have been used and visual analysis has been carried out to measure the land use/land cover changes. Erosion
and deposition has been observed around the newly constructed jetty. Forest area and agriculture area is found to decreased,
whereas built-up area has increased. 相似文献

Over the last four decades exploitation of natural resources to meet increasing societal demands for land based products has
caused significant changes in land use and land cover not only in nature’s best gifted regions but also environmentally sensitive
arid regions. Through digital interpretation of IRS LISS-III data of 2004 supported with field survey, the present land use
map of Jhunjhunun district of arid Rajasthan has been prepared. Agriculture is the dominant land use constituting 84% (including
38% irrigated cropland) area. The land use changes over time and space are worked out by comparing with Landsat 2 MSS data
of 1975 and Land use/land cover map of 1988–89. These changes are correlated by analyzing historical land use and cropping
pattern data from 1957–58 to 2004–05. The region witnessed record increase in irrigated area but sharply depleted ground water
and rendered hectares of irrigated double cropland into dry land agriculture. Strategies and technologies are suggested for
sustainable use and management of different category of land. 相似文献

Land-use change and Land-cover classes in Garur Ganga watershed of Bageshwar district in Uttranchal State during the periods 1963–1996 and 1986–1996 were analyzed through Survey of India Topographical Sheet and visual interpretation of LANDSAT 5 TM image bands 2, 3 and 4 using Geographical Information System (GIS). The detailed analysis have revealed that the area under agriculture and settlement increased from 34.98 to 42.34%. whereas the forest and barren land show a declining trend. Expansion of agriculture land and builtup areas have been found to be maximum in the 1200–1600 m elevation zone with 7–14° slope class. The loss of vegetation cover has been estimated to be 5.07% between 1963-1996 and 0.81% between 1986–1996. 相似文献

We studied vegetation and land cover characteristics within the existing array of protected areas (PAs) in South Garo Hills
of Meghalaya, northeast India and introduce the concept of protected area network (PAN) and methods to determine linkages
of forests among existing PAs. We describe and analyse potential elements of a PAN, including PAs, reserved forests, surrounding
buffers as zones of influence, and connecting forest corridors, which collectively can provide old-forest habitat for wildlife
species linked across a landscape dominated by jhum (shifting cultivation) agriculture. ANOVA and Chisquare analyses of patch characteristics and forest tree diversity suggested
the presence of equally species-rich and diverse old forest cover (tropical evergreen, semi-evergreen and deciduous forest
types) in portions of unprotected private and community owned land, which could be designated as additions to, and network
linkages among, existing PAs. Such additions and linkages would help provide for conservation of elephants and existing native
forest biodiversity and would constitute a PAN in the region. Most (80%) of the total forest cover of the region belongs to
private or community owned land. Therefore, such additions could be formally recognized under the aegis of the 2003 amendments
of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972, which include provisions to designate selected forest patches within private lands
as Community Reserves. 相似文献

This study reveals the temporal changes in the land use/land cover of district Ludhiana from the years 1970 to 2001 and reports
on the change that has occurred in land use/land cover as a result of change in cropping pattern. The changes were analysed
through the data obtained from statistical abstract 1969–70, False Colour Composite (FCC) of IRS-IC LISS-III satellite data
of March 2001 and ground truth. There has been a decrease in agricultural land by 2100 ha. but still it occupies 83.76% of
the total geographical area (TGA). The wasteland shows a declining trend whereas forest cover has increased from 1.07 to 2.71%
of TGA. Area under non-agricultural uses has increased from 10.13 to 12.50% of TGA. There has also been a great change in
the cropping pattern of the district. Crops such as groundnut, gram and cotton have nearly disappeared and wheat and rice
dominate the region. This change has substantially resulted in the decrease of area under wastelands. 相似文献

Impact assessment of watershed development activity assumes greater importance in present day agriculture. Considering the ability of remote sensing technology in watershed monitoring and impact assessment, a study was carried out to investigate the Impact Assessment of Karnataka Watershed Development Project (DANIDA) in Koralahallihalla Sub watershed in Sindagi taluk of Bijapur district in Northern Karnataka using satellite data of two periods i.e., IRS 1?C, LISS-III data of 30 December, 1997 (pre-treatment) and IRS P6, LISS-III data of 17 December, 2004 (post-treatment). The land use/land cover map was derived from the supervised classification. The results revealed that there has been no major shift in cropping patterns over a period of 7?years (1997?C2004). However, rabi cropped area has decreased drastically (187?ha), which might be due to the continuous droughts that occurred during the implementation period. On the other hand, kharif and double cropped area have increased marginally (103?ha and 96?ha, respectively). Increase in double cropped area showed that there was increase in irrigated land, which were earlier being used as rainfed and wastelands turned in to cultivated lands as seen in scrub lands and rabi cropped areas of the sub watershed. Wastelands in the sub-watershed has decreased marginally (36?ha). The vegetation vigour of the sub-watershed has been derived from the NDVI maps of both the periods. These NDVI maps indicate that there was a significant change in biomass status of the sub watershed. The vegetation vigour of the area was classified into three classes using NDVI. Substantial increase in the area under high and low biomass levels was observed (319?ha and 77?ha, respectively). The benefit-cost analysis indicates that the use of remote sensing technology was 2 times cheaper than the conventional methods. Thus, the repetitive coverage of the satellite data provides an excellent opportunity to monitor the land resources and evaluate the land cover changes through comparison of images for the watershed at different periods. 相似文献

Landscape Dynamics in North East Region of India (Meghalaya State) Using Spatial Decision Tree Model
Abstract India has figured with two hotspots ‐ the Western Ghats and the Eastern Himalayas ‐ in an identification of 8 ‘hottest’ biodiversity hotspots (Myers et. al. 2000). The Meghalaya state (study area) in North Eastern India lies within the “Indo‐Burma” area, which is one of the 8 ‘hottest’ biodiversity hotspots. Timber extraction, the age‐old practice of shifting cultivation and mining has been a major cause of extensive changes in this landscape. Human induced disturbance differs from natural disturbance especially in extension, severity and frequency. Spatial presentation of landscape dynamics can be used to infer disturbance regimes horizontally. Disturbance regimes are mostly dominated by landuse practices in Meghalaya and these landuse practices are important contributors for overall interpretation of ecological processes operating within the landscape. In this scenario, the development of models to study landscape dynamics using remote sensing and GIS would be of great importance to ecologists. In this paper, we make an attempt to characterize landscape dynamics using a decision tree based approach. The varying impacts of human interventions reflected in three zones at landscape level have been brought out in the present study. The physiographic zones of Meghalaya (viz. Garo hills, Khasi hills and Jaintia hills) manifest different landscape characteristics and present varying degree of degradation status. Garo hills, experiences maximum shifting cultivation and has shown highest dynamism in the study area followed by Jaintia and Khasi hills. Characterization of landscape dynamics is important in the perspective of decision makers and policy makers in order to prioritize conservation strategies, so that urgent and necessary action can be taken. 相似文献

The eco-environment in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area (TGRA) in China has received much attention due to the construction of the Three Gorges Hydropower Station. Land use/land cover changes (LUCC) are a major cause of ecological environmental changes. In this paper, the spatial landscape dynamics from 1978 to 2005 in this area are monitored and recent changes are analyzed, using the Landsat TM (MSS) images of 1978, 1988, 1995, 2000 and 2005. Vegetation cover fractions for a vegetation cover analysis are retrieved from MODIS/Terra imagery from 2000 to 2006, being the period before and after the rising water level of the reservoir. Several analytical indices have been used to analyze spatial and temporal changes. Results indicate that cropland, woodland, and grassland areas reduced continuously over the past 30 years, while river and built-up area increased by 2.79% and 4.45% from 2000 to 2005, respectively. The built-up area increased at the cost of decreased cropland, woodland and grassland. The vegetation cover fraction increased slightly. We conclude that significant changes in land use/land cover have occurred in the Three Gorges Reservoir Area. The main cause is a continuous economic and urban/rural development, followed by environmental management policies after construction of the Three Gorges Dam. 相似文献

Human-induced land use/cover change has been considered to be one of the most important parts of global environmental changes. In loess hilly and gully regions, to prevent soil loss and achieve better ecological environments, soil conservation measures have been taken during the past decades. The main objective of this study is to quantify the spatio-temporal variability of land use/cover change spatial patterns and make preliminary estimation of the role of human activity in the environmental change in Xihe watershed, Gansu Province, China. To achieve this objective, the methodology was developed in two different aspects, that is, (1) analysis of change patterns by binary image of change trajectories overlaid with different natural geographic factors, in which Relative Change Intensity (RCI) metric was established and used to make comparisons, and (2) analysis based on pattern metrics of main trajectories in the study area. Multi-source and multi-temporal Remote Sensing (RS) images (including Landsat ETM+ (30 June 2001), SPOT imagery (21 November 2003 and 5 May 2008) and CBERS02 CCD (5 June 2006)) were used due to the constraints of the availability of remotely sensed data. First, they were used to extract land use/cover types of each time node by object-oriented classification method. Classification results were then utilized in the trajectory analysis of land use/cover changes through the given four time nodes. Trajectories at every pixel were acquired to trace the history of land use/cover change for every location in the study area. Landscape metrics of trajectories were then analyzed to detect the change characteristics in time and space through the given time series. Analysis showed that most land use/cover changes were caused by human activities, most of which, under the direction of local government, had mainly led to virtuous change on the ecological environments. While, on the contrary, about one quarter of human-induced changes were vicious ones. Analysis through overlaying binary image of change trajectories with natural factors can efficiently show the spatio-temporal distribution characteristics of land use/cover change patterns. It is found that in the study area RCI of land use/cover changes is related to the distance to the river line. And there is a certain correlation between RCI and slope grades. However, no obvious correlation exists between RCI and aspect grades. 相似文献

Abstract Land use and land cover change, perhaps the most significant anthropogenic disturbance to the environment, mainly due to rapid urbanization/industrialization and large scale agricultural activities. In this paper, an attempt has been made to appraise land use/land cover changes over a century (1914–2007) in the Neyyar River Basin (L=56 km; Area = 483.4 km2) in southern Kerala – a biodiversity hot spot in Peninsular India. In this study, digital remote sensing data of the Indian Remote Sensing satellite series I-D (LISS III, 2006–2007) on 1:50,000 scale, Survey of India (SOI) toposheet of 1914 (1:63,360) and 1967 (1:50,000) have been utilized to map various land use/land cover changes. Maps of different periods have been registered and resampled to similar geographic coordinates using ERDAS Imagine 9.0. The most notable changes include decreases in areas of paddy cultivation, mixed crops, scrub lands and evergreen forests, and increases in built-up areas, rubber plantations, dense mixed forests, and water bodies. Further, large scale exploitation of flood plain mud and river sand have reached menacing proportions leading to bank caving and cut offs at channel bends. Conservation of land and water resources forms an important aspect of ecosystem management in the basin. 相似文献

Protected areas are experiencing increased levels of human pressure. To enable appropriate conservation action, it is critical to map and monitor changes in the type and extent of land cover/use and habitat classes, which can be related to human pressures over time. Satellite Earth observation (EO) data and techniques offer the opportunity to detect such changes. Yet association with field information and expert interpretation by ecologists is required to interpret, qualify and link these changes to human pressure. There is thus an urgent need to harmonize the technical background of experts in the field of EO data analysis with the terminology of ecologists, protected area management authorities and policy makers in order to provide meaningful, context-specific value-added EO products. This paper builds on the DPSIR framework, providing a terminology to relate the concepts of state, pressures, and drivers with the application of EO analysis. The type of pressure can be inferred through the detection of changes in state (i.e. changes in land cover and/or habitat type and/or condition). Four broad categories of changes in state are identified, i.e. land cover/habitat conversion, land cover/habitat modification, habitat fragmentation and changes in landscape connectivity, and changes in plant community structure. These categories of change in state can be mapped through EO analyses, with the goal of using expert judgement to relate changes in state to causal direct anthropogenic pressures. Drawing on expert knowledge, a set of protected areas located in diverse socio-ecological contexts and subject to a variety of pressures are analysed to (a) link the four categories of changes in state of land cover/habitats to the drivers (anthropogenic pressure), as relevant to specific target land cover and habitat classes; (b) identify (for pressure mapping) the most appropriate spatial and temporal EO data sources as well as interpretations from ecologists and field data useful in connection with EO data analysis. We provide detailed examples for two protected areas, demonstrating the use of EO data for detection of land cover/habitat change, coupled with expert interpretation to relate such change to specific anthropogenic pressures. We conclude with a discussion of the limitations and feasibility of using EO data and techniques to identify anthropogenic pressures, suggesting additional research efforts required in this direction. 相似文献

A study on land degradation in the upper catchment of river Tons, a tributary of Yamuna river, in Uttarkashi district of the
Uttarakhand state, was carried out using on-screen visual interpretation of IRS LISS-III + PAN merged data. The study area,
which is largely mountainous, includes Govind Wildlife Sanctuary and National Park. Vegetation cover, slope and erosion status
were used as criteria for the delineation of four major land degradation categories viz., undegraded, moderately degraded, degraded and severely degraded. More than 50 per cent of the study area is reported to be covered with snow and grassland. The moderate to severely degraded
area worked out to be 42.4 per cent of the total area. The 32.8 per cent of area was found to be moderately degraded, followed by degraded (6.63%) and severely degraded (2.88%) areas. The depletion of vegetation cover on mountainous terrain and subsequent cultivation without proper protection
measures is the reason for severe soil erosion and land degradation. In view of the existing land degradation situation, the
catchment requires immediate treatment on priority for the sustenance of agriculture and wild life. It is expected that these
measures will reduce the silt load in the river Tons and eventually, in river Yamuna. 相似文献

Based on visual interpretation of Multidate Landsat Imagery, the spatial distribution of land use/land cover over 45,000 sq.km, spread over the three drought prone districts of Bijapur, Belgaum and Dharwar in NW Karnataka, has been mapped. The land use/land cover is classified into five Level-I and twelve Level-II classes. The pattern of change in land use/land cover during the period October, 1980 and January, 1982 has been one of decline in all the land use classes (except for agricultural use, which is more due to seasonal change) which highlight the land use/land cover changes in the drought prone area. An optimum land use plan requires that all the cropland should be zoned for cultivation while marginal lands like scrub land and mixed barren land (from the view point of cultivation) should be zoned for pasture/grazing and animal husbandary. There is a case for flexibility here, depending upon the pressure of population on land. The accuracy level of the ‘information base’ of the thematic map(s) obtained from Landsat imagery is 94 percent. 相似文献
