For the past half-century, reconstructions of North American ice cover during the Last Glacial Maximum have shown ice-free land distal to the Laurentide Ice Sheet, primarily on Melville and Banks islands in the western Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Both islands reputedly preserve at the surface multiple Laurentide till sheets, together with associated marine and lacustrine deposits, recording as many as three pre-Late Wisconsinan glaciations. The northwest corner of Banks Island was purportedly never glaciated and is trimmed by the oldest and most extensive glaciation (Banks Glaciation) considered to be of Matuyama age (>780 ka BP). Inside the limit of Banks Glaciation, younger till sheets are ascribed to the Thomsen Glaciation (pre-Sangamonian) and the Amundsen Glaciation (Early Wisconsinan Stade). The view that the western Canadian Arctic Archipelago remained largely ice-free during the Late Wisconsinan is reinforced by a recent report of two woolly mammoth fragments collected on Banks and Melville islands, both dated to ~22 ka BP. These dates imply that these islands constitute the northeast extremity of Beringia.A fundamental revision of this model is now warranted based on widespread fieldwork across the adjacent coastlines of Banks and Melville islands, including new dating of glacial and marine landforms and sediments. On Dundas Peninsula, southern Melville Island, AMS 14C dates on ice-transported marine molluscs within the most extensive Laurentide till yield ages of 25–49 ka BP. These dates require that Late Wisconsinan ice advanced northwestward from Visount Melville Sound, excavating fauna spanning Marine Isotope Stage 3. Laurentide ice that crossed Dundas Peninsula (300 m asl) coalesced with Melville Island ice occupying Liddon Gulf. Coalescent Laurentide and Melville ice continued to advance westward through M'Clure Strait depositing granite erratics at ≥235 m asl that require grounded ice in M'Clure Strait, as do streamlined bedforms on the channel floor. Deglaciation is recorded by widespread meltwater channels that show both the initial separation of Laurentide and Melvile ice, and the successive retreat of Laurentide ice southward across Dundas Peninsula into Viscount Melville Sound. Sedimentation from these channels deposited deltas marking deglacial marine limit. Forty dates on shells collected from associated glaciomarine rhythmites record near-synchronous ice retreat from M'Clure Strait and Dundas Peninsula to north-central Victoria Island ~11.5 ka BP. Along the adjacent coast of Banks Island, deglacial shorelines also record the retreat of Laurentide ice both eastward through M'Clure Strait and southward into the island's interior. The elevation and age (~11.5 ka BP) of deglacial marine limit there is fully compatible with the record of ice retreat on Melville Island. The last retreat of ice from Mercy Bay (northern Banks Island), previously assigned to northward retreat into M'Clure Strait during the Early Wisconsinan, is contradicted by geomorphic evidence for southward retreat into the island's interior during the Late Wisconsinan. This revision of the pattern and age of ice retreat across northern Banks Island results in a significant simplification of the previous Quaternary model. Our observations support the amalgamation of multiple till sheets – previously assigned to at least three pre-Late Wisconsinan glaciations – into the Late Wisconsinan. This revision also removes their formally named marine transgressions and proglacial lakes for which evidence is lacking. Erratics were also widely observed armouring meltwater channels originating on the previously proposed never-glaciated landscape. An extensive Late Wisconsinan Laurentide Ice Sheet across the western Canadian Arctic is compatible with similar evidence for extensive Laurentide ice entering the Richardson Mountains (Yukon) farther south and with the Innuitian Ice Sheet to the north. Widespread Late Wisconsinan ice, in a region previously thought to be too arid to sustain it, has important implications for paleoclimate, ice sheet modelling, Arctic Ocean ice and sediment delivery, and clarifying the northeast limit of Beringia.  相似文献

Mammoth remains on Santa Cruz Island, one of the four Northern Channel Islands of California, are very sparse, in marked contrast to those reported from Santa Rosa and San Miguel Islands of the same island group. A probable major reason for this scarcity is that Quaternary deposits are greatly restricted on Santa Cruz Island. It is proposed, contrary to popular opinion, that fossils found on Santa Cruz Island were derived from animals which died on the island, and were not transported there by humans. Reasons for this conclusion are that the size and geological context of the fossils are similar to those of the largest mammoth fossils of Santa Rosa Island, and that, in spite of extensive investigations by many persons, mammoth remains have not been found in middens, either on the islands or on the adjacent mainland.  相似文献

Plesiosaurs     
Plesiosaurs are an unusual and intriguing group of extinct aquatic reptiles ( Fig. 1 ). They are sauropterygians, a group known from an array of semi‐aquatic forms during the Triassic period: placodonts, pachypleurosaurs and nothosaurs. The first plesiosaurs are known from the very latest Triassic, but by the Early Jurassic plesiosaurs were cosmopolitan in distribution and lasted successfully to the latest Cretaceous, when they became victims of the K‐T extinction event. Plesiosaurs were predominantly marine organisms, although their fossils are not uncommon in brackish or even fresh water deposits. We know that all plesiosaurs were carnivorous; many of them were top predators in their respective ecosystems. But with no living descendants (or analogues) plesiosaurs are mysterious fossil organisms—as we will see, many questions regarding their biology remain unanswered or contentious. However, plesiosaurs are currently undergoing renewed scientific attention.

Late Wisconsinan age glacial landforms and deposits indicate that an ice shelf of at least 60,000 km2 flowed northwestward into Viscount Melville Sound, probably from the M'Clintock Dome of the Laurentide Ice Sheet. The ice shelf overlapped coastal areas and laid Winter Harbour Till up to 125 m above present sea level on the southern coast of Melville Island, to 135 m on Byam Martin Island, to possibly 90 m on the northeast tip of Banks Island, and to 150 m on the north coast of Victoria Island. The contemporary sea level was 50 to 100 m higher than present (it now rises eastward). A maximum age of 10,340 ± 150 yr B.P. for the till, and thus the ice-shelf advance, is provided by shells in marine sediments which underlie it, whereas a minimum age of 9880 ± 150 yr B.P. is provided by overlying shells that postdate the ice advance. The major advance of shelf ice into Viscount Melville Sound may be the result of the rapid disintegration of the M'Clintock Dome while the climate ameliorated in the western Arctic.  相似文献

The “upper pit” at the Lost Chicken placer gold mine in east central Alaska contains fossils that provide information on the flora and insect fauna of interior Alaska just before the onset of global cooling at 2.5 myr. Fossils come from sediments interbedded with the Lost Chicken tephra (dated at 2.9 ± 0.4 myr—early Late Pliocene) and portray the floodplain and valley of a small creek within a region dominated by a coniferous forest richer in genera and species than the present one. Climate was wetter and less continental, and there was probably little or no permafrost. At least one other Pliocene tephra (the Fortymile tephra) occurs at the site and is also associated with plant and insect fossils. Among these fossils are extinct plants and insects like those found at other Tertiary sites in northern Canada and Alaska. The Lost Chicken sequence is the same age as the Beaufort Formation on Meighen Island, more than 1000 km to the north. Like Lost Chicken, Meighen Island sediments contain fossils representing a diverse boreal environment. This shows that the latitudinal climate gradient during early Late Pliocene time was shallower than at present and the boreal forest had a far greater latitudinal span than now.  相似文献

Maastrichtian and Lower Tertiary strata of the Eureka Sound Formation are widespread in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and include major resources of lignite, subbituminous and high-volatile bituminous coal. The level of organic maturity of the strata for the most part reflects pre-orogenic (pre-Late Eocene-Miocene) depths of burial and thus helps define Early Tertiary depositional patterns. In the Remus Basin, in the eastern Canadian Archipelago, over 90 seams of coal occur ranging in rank from lignite (0.15% R0 max) to high-volatile bituminous (0.70% R0 max). The maturity values at the base of the Eureka Sound Formation, in conjunction with measured maturation gradients, indicate a maximum paleothickness of 4500 m and outline a basin with well defined eastern, western and southern margins. On the bases of numerical modeling, the maturation gradients are interpreted to reflect paleogeothermal gradients up to 55°C/km in the eastern part of the basin and of about 20°C/km in the western part.Elsewhere in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago the level of organic maturity of the Eureka Sound Formation varies from 0.15% R0 max to 0.70% R0 max. Maturation gradients measured from Meighen Island in the Strand Fiord Basin and from Melville Island in the southern part of the West Sverdrup Basin are about 0.10 log R0 max/km, and when compared to numerical models suggest paleogeothermal gradients on the order of 15°C/km. At Meighen Island the paleodepth of burial of the Eureka Sound Formation may have been up to 6000 m. As a first approximation, the Melville Island gradient is considered representative of West Sverdrup and Banks Basin. Using this gradients, a paleodepth of burial of 3000 m is calculated for central West Sverdrup Basin and 4000 m for the southern part. In Banks Basin the paleodepth of burial is estimated to be on the order of 4000 m. Maturity values obtained from the Lake Hazen and Judge Dally Basins, Eclipse Trough and Somerset, Devon and Cornwallis Islands and at Bache Peninsula on eastern Ellesmere Island cannot be readily interpreted in terms of paleodepth of burial. No measured sections are thick or complete enough to establish maturation gradients, and the Tertiary history of these areas is only poorly known.The low paleogeothernal gradients calculated from Meighen Island, Melville Island and from the western part of the Remus Basin (15–20°C/km) are considered to reflect low heat flow or rapid Tertiary sedimentation and uplift such that an equilibrium geothermal gradient may never have existed. The higher maturation gradients and interpreted paleogeothermal gradients in the eastern Remus Basin are considered to be the product of higher heat flow on eastern Ellesmere Island.Anomalously high levels of maturity obtained along the Stolz Fault and adjacent Strand Fiord on Axel Heiberg Island are attributed to the thermal effects of evaporite diapirs.  相似文献

Geological and paleontological studies of Rote Island have proven that the distribution of the Meso-zoic rocks (especially Triassic, Jurassic, and Creta-ceous) is broader than was thought by previous work-ers. The Paleozoic rocks are not exposed, but some fossils collected from the surface suggest that such rocks are present deep down in the subsurface of this island. The fossils were brought to the surface along with the other materials by mud volcanoes which are common on the island.  相似文献

During the latest early Campanian, a diverse vertebrate assemblage inhabited the shallow coastal waters of the Kristianstad Basin, southernmost Sweden. The taxon-rich fauna includes numerous species of sharks, rays, chimaeroids, bony fish, mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, aquatic birds, crocodiles, and turtles. Vertebrate fossils have been found at several localities within the basin, representing at least three different environments: near-shore waters around a rocky island, presumably murky, shallow waters adjacent to a river mouth, and more open coastal waters. Many vertebrates in the marine faunal community were high-level predators, others were piscivorous, bottom-dwellers that fed primarily on benthic invertebrates and fish, or omnivores that fed on algae and invertebrates. The fauna thus exploited a wide range of food sources and habitats. Six trophic levels, ranging from primary producers to fifth-level consumers, are recognised, indicating a high loss of energy and reflecting a mixture of shallow coastal and more open water ecosystems. The trophic structure suggests that the basin was a rich palaeoenvironment with high faunal diversity and productivity.  相似文献

Though the Maastrichtian Phosphates of Morocco have yielded very rich marine vertebrate assemblages, plesiosaurs remain very scarce in these strata. The only hitherto recognized taxon was Plesiosaurus mauritanicus Arambourg, 1952, regarded here as a nomem dubium. Here we describe a new genus and species of elasmosaurid plesiosaur, Zarafasaura oceanis, which represents the first valid elasmosaurid plesiosaur described from the latest Cretaceous of Africa, and the second one from this continent. A phylogenetic analysis of plesiosauroids indicates that Zarafasaura oceanis has close affinities with elasmosaurids from the Late Cretaceous of North America and Japan. Among its distinctive suite of characters, the general shape and organisation of its squamosal and palate are unique among elasmosaurids. This new taxon completes our understanding of Late Cretaceous plesiosaur palaeobiodiversity and palaeobiogeography, and shows that Maastrichtian plesiosaurs were characterized by a quite high degree of endemism. They were also highly diversified and distributed worldwide, which supports the hypothesis of a catastrophic extinction of plesiosaurs at the K/T boundary.  相似文献

A sediment core from Lake BC01 (75°10.945′N, 111°55.181′W, 225 m asl) on south-central Melville Island, NWT, Canada, provides the first continuous postglacial environmental record for the region. Fossil pollen results indicate that the postglacial landscape was dominated by Poaceae and Salix, typical of a High Arctic plant community, whereas the Arctic herb Oxyria underwent a gradual increase during the late Holocene. Pollen-based climate reconstructions suggests the presence of a cold and dry period ~12,000 cal yr BP, possibly representing the Younger Dryas, followed by warmer and wetter conditions from 11,000 to 5000 cal yr BP, likely reflective of the Holocene Thermal Maximum. The climate then underwent a gradual cooling and drying from 5000 cal yr BP to the present, suggesting a late Holocene neoglacial cooling. Diatom preservation was poor prior to 5000 cal yr BP, when conditions were warmest, suggesting that diatom dissolution may in part be climatically controlled. Diatom concentrations were highest ~4500 cal yr BP but then decreased substantially by 3500 cal yr BP and remained low before recovering slightly in the 20th century. An abrupt warming occurred during the past 70 yr at the site, although the magnitude of this warming did not exceed that of the early Holocene.  相似文献

Ennadai Lake, in the forest-tundra ecotonal region of Keewatin, Northwest Territories, Canada, has been the subject of several paleoecological investigations (palynology, plant macrofossils, fossil soils). This study concerns Holocene insect fossils at Ennadai, a new approach in a region shown to be sensitive to climatic change. The Ennadai I site yielded 53 taxa, representing 13 families of Coleoptera and 7 families of other insects and arachnids, including abundant ants. These fossils range in age from about 6300 to 630 yr B.P. The Ennadai II site produced fossils of 58 taxa, including 13 beetle families and 15 families of other arthropods, ranging in age from 4700 to 870 yr B.P. The insect evidence suggests the presence of trees in the Ennadai region from 6000 to 2200 yr B.P. A conifer pollen decline from 4800 to 4500 yr B.P. at Ennadai has previously been interpreted as an opening up or retreat of forest in response to climatic cooling, but the insect fossils reveal the continued presence of trees during this interval. Both insect assemblages suggest trends of forest retreat and tundra expansion between about 2200 and 1500 yr B.P., presumably due to climatic cooling, with a return of woodland by about 1000 yr B.P.  相似文献

本文描述了贵州中寒武世凯里组中的分枝状宏观藻类化石5属7种,即:Marpolia spissa Walcott,Marpolia aequalis Walcott,Guizhouella ramulosa Yang(gen.et sp.nov.),Doushantuophyton lineare Chen,Thamnophton formosus Yang(gen.et sp.nov.),Eoulothrix fibrillata Ding,Eoulothrix flabellophyton Yang(sp.mov.)。根据大量的藻类与凯里生物群共生特征,从藻类的生态及生物群分布受到沉积韵律控制等特征分析,认为凯里生物群生活环境的水深应该在30-60m,而埋藏和保存环境的水深是150m左右。另外,将凯里生物群中的宏观藻类化石与震旦纪陡山沱期的藻类化石进行了比较,两者在以分枝状藻类占主要组成上是相似的,从这一方面来说,晚震旦世宏观藻类与寒武纪宏观藻类没有大的演变,但寒武纪宏观藻类以出现钙质珊瑚藻类、分枝更加复杂的类型和具有锯齿状叶状体、生殖托构造的藻类为特征。  相似文献

A diverse benthic fauna containing exceptionally preserved soft-bodied organisms is described from the new Vauréal Konservat-Lagerstätte from the Upper Ordovician Vauréal Formation (Katian) of Anticosti Island, Canada. These fossils occur as pyritic (or goethitic, if weathered), calcitic aggregates or sediment-filled voids on micritic bedding planes of a marlstone-limestone alternation originated on a shallow tropical carbonate ramp. Many organisms are preserved in association with their traces (e.g. burrows, trails), whose changing shapes indicate increasing cohesiveness of the substrate. Rapid burial (obrution) under dysoxic bottom conditions must have favoured exceptional preservation. Although anatomical details of the organisms are often lacking due to recrystallization, members of different groups of organisms could be interpreted based on their shape and other characteristic features, including those of which represent their oldest fossil record (i.e. Acoelomorpha, Turbellaria, Nemertea, Nematoda), beside Polychaeta, Sipuncula, Ostracoda and other Arthropoda. In parallel with molecular data, which recently have changed the phylogenetic status of some clades, this soft-bodied fauna and their traces not only record their appearance but add to the understanding of their body plan and behaviour. The new Konservat-Lagerstätte provides important information about a diverse benthic community in the Late Ordovician after the Great Ordovician Biodiversification Event (GOBE), and represents a calibration point for comparison across the Late Ordovician mass extinction. Moreover, comparable Fossil-Lagerstätten are probably more common in shallow-marine carbonates than currently known but might have been simply overlooked.  相似文献

Seven coleoid jaws recovered from Santonian to lower Campanian (Upper Cretaceous) strata in Hokkaido, Japan were taxonomically studied. Based on the comparison with the jaws of modern and fossil coleoids, six of the seven jaw fossils are referred to the following two genera and three species, including one possible new species: Nanaimoteuthis jeletzkyi and N. yokotai of the order Vampyromorpha, and Paleocirroteuthis sp. nov. (?) of the order Cirroctopodida. The other single lower jaw is seemingly similar to those of modern octopods and teuthids with respect to the shape of the inner lamella, but its order-level assignment could not be determined because of its imperfect preservation. N. jeletzkyi has been described in the Upper Cretaceous fore-arc basin deposits in Hokkaido (Yezo Group) and Vancouver Island, Canada (Nanaimo Group), whereas N. yokotai occurs only in the Yezo Group. These findings, complemented by previous reports of coleoid jaws, gladii, and phragmocones from the Yezo and Nanaimo Groups, demonstrate that a highly diversified, non-belemnitid coleoid fauna including large teuthids had already appeared during the post-Albian Late Cretaceous, in the North Pacific region.  相似文献

Systematic extinctions can leave major morphological gaps between living crown-group clades. Such morphological gaps would be perceived, from a neontological point of view, as major evolutionary transitions. In order to fill these morphological gaps and to map the evolutionary steps toward major evolutionary transitions, we need to integrate extinct stem-group taxa in phylogenetic studies. However, the recognition of stem group has not been widely adopted in the study of early animal fossils, despite that all fossils are stem groups at one level or another. Part of the difficulty is that stem groups may not have all features that collectively diagnose the respective crown group, and they can have unique (autapomorphic) features, making them tantalizingly similar to and frustratingly different from the crown group (e.g., stem-group eukaryotes can be prokaryotic and stem-group animals can be protistan). The need to embrace stem groups and to implement the PhyloCode, in order to achieve phylogenetic clarity and to offer key paleontological insights into the origin and early animal evolution, is illustrated in debates on several controversial Ediacaran and Cambrian fossils.  相似文献

Data- and knowledge-driven techniques are used to produce regional Au prospectivity maps of a portion of Melville Peninsula, Northern Canada using geophysical and geochemical data. These basic datasets typically exist for large portions of Canada's North and are suitable for a “greenfields” exploration programme. The data-driven method involves the use of the Random Forest (RF) supervised classifier, a relatively new technique that has recently been applied to mineral potential modelling while the knowledge-driven technique makes use of weighted-index overlay, commonly used in GIS spatial modelling studies. We use the location of known Au occurrences to train the RF classifier and calculate the signature of Au occurrences as a group from non-occurrences using the basic geoscience dataset. The RF classification outperformed the knowledge-based model with respect to prediction of the known Au occurrences. The geochemical data in general were more predictive of the known Au occurrences than the geophysical data. A data-driven approach such as RF for the production of regional Au prospectivity maps is recommended provided that a sufficient number of training areas (known Au occurrences) exist.  相似文献

Kakawis Lake situated four metres above sea level on western Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, was the target of a palaeotsunami investigation. Six percussion cores recovered from this lake contain six anomalous deposits interbedded within the unconsolidated lacustrine sediments. Detailed sedimentological, geophysical and macro-fraction analyses were performed. The methods new to palaeoseismic approaches proved to be successful tools to characterize the anomalously coarse layers enriched in terrestrial plant detritus and marine shells. Based on at least eight types of evidence, six tsunami inundations are suggested as mechanisms responsible for the anomalous deposition, spanning from 3,634 to 2,534 cal yrs BP. Each tsunami event consists of a combination of different lithological facies resulting from different stages of tsunami inundation and settling of the material in the lake basin (pulses and inter-pulses). Tsunami deposits in lakes are shown to be less vulnerable to erosional and bioturbation processes than those found in marshes or beaches as well as underwater marine environments. However, few palaeoseismic studies have been carried out in low-elevation lakes along the Cascadia Subduction Zone region. The three last tsunami events known to have inundated areas along the Pacific shores of southern British Columbia, Canada and northern USA are not present at Kakawis Lake, establishing a current <4 m above mean sea level vertical limit as possible maximum tsunami height for areas located away from fjord heads on Vancouver Island. The anomalous deposits found in Kakawis Lake may be the oldest geological evidence of inferred tsunami on Vancouver Island, providing a possible recurrence interval between 200 and 400 years.  相似文献
