The contents of silver and mercury in 323 spots on gold grains from seven localities of the Witwatersrand palaeo-placer and Archaean vein deposits from Barberton were measured using an electron microprobe. The objective was to obtain information on the extent of gold alteration during fluvial transport and post-depositional geological processes. The results, however, show that Ag and Hg are distributed homogeneously in the gold grains studied. No indications were found that the gold was transported in solution nor that leaching took place in an oxidizing fluvial environment. This strongly suggests that the Ag and Hg contents in Witwatersrand gold grains represent geochemical ‘fingerprints’ inherited from their eroded primary sources. Combined analysis for Ag and Hg in Witwatersrand gold grains by electron microprobe can therefore be a valuable tool in establishing the types of primary sources for the gold.  相似文献

The morphology of pyrites from the Proterozoic, auriferous and uraniferous conglomerates of the Upper Witwatersrand System of the Klerksdorp Goldfield (South Africa) was studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The pyrite particles were recovered by hydrofluoric acid leaching, thus making a three-dimensional SEM examination possible. According to morphological criteria the pyrites were classified into three types. Trace-element analysis by atomic absorption spetrophotometry (Au, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pb, Mn, As) and the statistical evaluation of the results confirmed the morphological classification:
  • Type 1: Authigenic, idiomorphic to hypidiomorphic pyrites or pyrite accumulations, which were formed in the conglomerates during diagenesis or metamorphism.
  • Type 2: Allogenic, rounded, compact pyrites. This type was eroded from primary deposits in the hinterland of the Witwatersrand basin and deposited with the Witwatersrand sediments. It shows the closest trace-element affinity to pyrites from the Barberton Mountain Land, the source area model for the Witwatersrand sediments. The recognition of this pyrite type from the Klerksdorp Goldfield is in agreement with observations on detrital compact pyrites described from other goldfields of the Witwatersrand.
  • Type 3: Allogenic, rounded, porous pyrites. These were formed from pyritic muds and iron sulfide gels existing on the surface of the alluvial fan, and later were reworked as mud balls or fragments and deposited with the conglomerates. Indentations with radial fracture patterns point to transport partly in a plastic state. The occurrence of colloform pyrites among this type supports the postulation of pyritic muds or iron sulfide gels. Only in this type of pyrite various inclusions such as gold, quartz, silicates, brannerite, copper- and titanium-bearing minerals were found. It is suggested that these inclusions were trapped as dust-like particles in the pyritic muds or iron sulfide gels on the surface of the alluvial fan. Only the presence of the allogenic, porous pyrites could be correlated with high gold values in the conglomerates.
  • The three-dimensional SEM examination of the pyrites has shown that the pyrite types described by previous authors from the Witwatersrand System can be classified into the three types of pyrite given here.  相似文献

A detailed electron microprobe study has been made of magnetite grains from magnetitite layer 1 of the upper zone of the Bushveld Complex, in order to establish if there is any evidence for postcumulus processes having affected magnetite compositions. Representative composition profiles obtained from detailed step traverses are presented for touching magnetite grains and where magnetite is in contact with either ilmenite or plagioclase.Magnetite grains in all textural settings are compositionally heterogeneous. Touching magnetite grains display systematic compositional zonations: the rims of grains show a marked decrease in Al and Mg towards the grain boundary; the cores are characterised by a distinctive peak and trough pattern for these elements. These variations can be related to the positions of exsolved phases. Exsolutions in the cores are either pleonaste or an Fe3+ bearing AlMg spinel, whereas those at the grain boundaries are generally more Al-rich and include corundum. Similar exsolution related compositional variations for Mg and Al were found in magnetites in contact with ilmenite and plagioclase.A model has been developed which illustrates the possible sequence of postcumulus events during the interval between accumulation of the magnetite and the cessation of subsolidus reactions. The essential feature of the model is the delicate interplay between depletion of the host magnetite by corundum, pleonaste and the Fe3+ bearing AlMg spinel exsolutions, and diffusion of Al and Mg into the depleted areas from the surrounding magnetite.Data for Cr contents in magnetites show that although this particular trace element is apparently resistant to redistribution by exsolution processes, it is affected by subsolidus re-equilibration between magnetite and ilmenite, or magnetite and intercumulus liquid.  相似文献

Stratiform quartz-sulphide-gold veins, locally termed reefs are hosted within the Proterozoic Transvaal Sequence sedimentary succession, in the Sabie-Pilgrim's Rest goldfield, eastern Transvaal. These deposits have produced about 180 tonnes of gold and share many characteristics with those of Telfer, Western Australia. Detailed examination of the Elandshoogte Mine shows that gold deposition occurred in two stages, both linked to bedding-parallel thrust faulting within the sedimentary pile. Deformation being concentrated within incompetent shale beds, interlayered within more competent units. The majority of gold was introduced in the second stage of mineralisation and occurs within fractures in early-formed sulphide minerals. Deposition of competent quartz veins accompanying early sulphide and gold mineralisation resulted in a change in deformation style within the reef zone, from early shearing in shales to later duplex faulting of the quartz-reef. Fluids accompanying faulting are implied to have transported gold, and a magmatic source of mineralisation is suggested.  相似文献

The morphology and mineral chemistry of gold and associated sulphides at Sheba, Fairview, and New Consort gold mines in the Barberton Greenstone Belt (BGB) identify two main types of mineralization. The first type occurs associated with sulphides (mainly pyrite), either as inclusions (10–30 μm) or as sub-microscopic gold. The second gold type consists of large gold grains (≥ 100 μm) within the silicates (mostly quartz).LA-ICP-MS studies reveal that some gold and associated sulphide grains contain high values of Cl, Br, Na, and I. The elemental relationships reflect the different chemistry and precipitation processes of possible source fluids, and identify several episodes of mineralisation in the study area, one of them formed due to a boiling process in a supercritical hydrothermal environment. This paper reports on the compositional characteristics of these gold grains, the significance of the halogen contents, and the implications for possible sources of the gold and associated sulphides.  相似文献

Ag/Au ratios of individual gold particles and of ore-samples obtained from the Basal Reef conglomerate horizon of the Upper Witwatersrand System in the Orange Free State Goldfield (South Africa) are discussed. The Ag/Au values of individual gold grains were found to be exceptionally constant at about 0.0812, whereas the Ag/Au ratios of the ore-samples have markedly higher values and show a large variation. These values indicate that the detrital gold has been homogenized during transportation and sedimentation and that part of the original silver content has been redistributed. It is likely that the first refining of detrital gold particles occurred in streams which eventually drained into the Witwatersrand basin. Further redistribution of the silver relative to the gold took place in the littoral zone of the basin, where the conglomerates were reworked by wave action and erosion. It is contended that supergenic enrichment of gold might also have taken place close to the original shore-line. These processes are believed to account for an increase in the Ag/Au values of ore-samples towards the northwest in the area investigated. Finally, the gold has been homogenized during the metamorphic period of the Witwatersrand System, when pseudohydrothermal transport and redeposition of certain constituents took place. It is suggested that the main portion of the silver content of the original alloy, which was redistributed during the various processes outlined above, is now present as finely dispersed silver minerals. The hypothesis of an elevation control of the Ag/Au values has been found to be improbable.

Heavy metal contents have been investigated in sediment and water samples from gold and platinum mining areas of South Africa. Waste waters from Witwatersrand and Orange Free State gold mines exhibit characteristically low pH-values due to the formation of sulphuric acid by oxidation of sulphide ore minerals. Acid leaching of iron, manganese, nickel, cobalt, copper and zinc effects a 1,000–10,000-fold increase of metal concentrations as compared to the respective values in unpolluted river water. Lack of carbonate buffering prevents rapid immobilization and may lead to widespread distribution of toxic metals in the aquatic systems. These findings illustrate that modern ore refining techniques have little effect on the water quality as long as unchecked hydrometallurgical processes take place outside the production plant.  相似文献

An early Proterozoic palaeosol, developed on basalt and the basal part of an overlying transgressive marine sedimentary sequence, contains pyrite which is auriferous in places. The mineralization is stratiform and continuous over a distance of several hundred kilometres. Although this mineralization can be explained by a number of genetical models the author concluded that the mineralization took place during pedogenesis and/or diagenesis. Gold is considered to have been leached from the basalt and from the B horizon of the palaeosol by sulphide-rich groundwater and was then precipitated by the effect of the lowering of the HS activity. The latter is thought to have been caused by atmospheric oxidation and by reaction with Fe-rich leachate from the A horizon, and pyritization of pre-existing iron oxide minerals may also have contributed. It is concluded that a pedogenic gold protore may explain the origin of at least some of the gold of the Witwatersrand type of deposit.  相似文献

We present a mineral systems approach to predictive mapping of orogenic gold prospectivity in the Giyani greenstone belt (GGB) by using layers of spatial evidence representing district-scale processes that are critical to orogenic gold mineralization, namely (a) source of metals/fluids, (b) active pathways, (c) drivers of fluid flow and (d) metal deposition. To demonstrate that the quality of a predictive map of mineral prospectivity is a function of the quality of the maps used as sources of spatial evidence, we created two sets of prospectivity maps — one using an old lithologic map and another using an updated lithological map as two separate sources of spatial evidence for source of metals/fluids, drivers of fluid flow and metal deposition. We also demonstrate the importance of using spatially-coherent (or geologically-consistent) deposit occurrences in data-driven predictive mapping of mineral prospectivity. The best predictive orogenic gold prospectivity map obtained in this study is the one that made use of spatial evidence from the updated lithological map and spatially-coherent orogenic gold occurrences. This map predicts 20% of the GGB to be prospective for orogenic gold, with 89% goodness-of-fit between spatially-coherent inactive orogenic gold mines and individual layers of spatial evidence and 89% prediction-rate against spatially-coherent orogenic gold prospects. In comparison, the predictive gold prospectivity map obtained by using spatial evidence from the old lithological map and all gold occurrences has 80% goodness-of-fit but only 63% prediction-rate. These results mean that the prospectivity map based on spatially-coherent gold occurrences and spatial evidence from the updated lithological map predicts exploration targets better (i.e., 28% smaller prospective areas with 9% stronger fit to training gold mines and 26% higher prediction-rate with respect to validation gold prospects) than the prospectivity map based on all known gold occurrences and spatial evidence from the old lithological map.  相似文献

The Kalahari Goldridge Mine is located within the Archaean Kraaipan Greenstone Belt, about 60 km southwest of Mafikeng in the North West Province, South Africa. The ore body thickness varies from 15 to 45 m along a strike length of about 1.5 km within approximately N–S striking banded iron formation (BIF). The stratabound ore body is hosted primarily by BIF, which consists of alternating chert and magnetite–chlorite–stilpnomelane–sulphide–carbonate bands of millimetre- to centimetre scale. A footwall of sericite–carbonate–chlorite schist underlain by mafic amphibolite occurs to the west and carbonaceous metapelites in the hanging wall to the east. Overlying the hanging wall, carbonaceous metapelites, units of coarse-grained metagreywackes fining upwards, become increasingly conglomeratic up the stratigraphy. Small-scale isoclinal folds, brecciation, extension fractures and boudinage of cherty BIF units reflect brittle-ductile deformation. Fold axial planes have foliation, with subvertical plunges parallel to prominent rodding and mineral lineation in the footwall rocks. Gold mineralisation is associated with two generations of quartz–carbonate veins, dipping approximately 20° to 40° W. The first generation consists of ladder-vein sets (group IIA) preferentially developed in centimetre-scale Fe-rich mesobands, whereas the second generation consists of large quartz–carbonate veins (group IIB), which locally crosscut the entire ore body and extend into the footwall and hanging wall. The ore body is controlled by mesoscale isoclinal folds approximately 67° E, orthogonal to the plane of mineralised, gently dipping veins, defining the principal stretching direction and development of fluid-focussing conduits. The intersections of the mineralised veins and foliation planes of the host rock plunges approximately 08° to the north. Pervasive hydrothermal alteration is characterised by chloritisation, carbonatisation, sulphidation and K-metasomatism. Gold is closely associated with sulphides, mainly pyrite and pyrrhotite, and to a lesser extent, with bismuth tellurides and carbonate minerals. Mass balance transfer calculations indicate that hydrothermal alteration of BIF involved enrichment of Au, Ag, Bi, Te, S and CO2 (LOI), MgO, Ba, K and Rb, but significant depletion of SiO2 and, to a lesser extent, Fe2O3. Extensive replacement of magnetite and chlorite in BIF and other pelitic sedimentary rocks by sulphide and carbonate minerals, both on mesoscopic and microscopic scales, is evidence of interaction of CO2- and H2S-bearing fluids with the Fe-rich host rocks. The fineness of gold grains ranges from 823 to 921, similar to that of other epigenetic Archaean BIF-hosted gold deposits, worldwide.  相似文献

The Vaal River Basin is an economically significant area situated in the interior of South Africa (SA), where mining, industrial, domestic and agricultural activities are very intense. The purpose of the study was to assess the influence of geology and anthropogenic activities on groundwater chemistry, and identify the predominant hydrochemical processes in the basin. Data from seventy groundwater sites were retrieved from the national database, and attention was paid to fifteen water quality parameters. Groundwater samples were clustered into seven hydrochemically distinct groups using Hierarchical Cluster Analysis (HCA), and three samples treated independently. A Piper plot revealed two major water types, Ca–Mg–HCO3 and Ca–Mg–SO4-Cl, which were linked to dissolution of the underlying geology and mine pollution. The Ca?+?Mg vs HCO3?+?SO4 plot indicated that reverse ion exchange is an active process than cation exchange in the area. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to identify the main natural and anthropogenic processes causing variation in groundwater chemistry. Four principal components were extracted using PCA that explains 82% of the total variance in the chemical parameters. The PCA results can be categorized by four components: (1) evaporites and silicates weathering enrichment of Na, K, Cl, SO4 and F, and anthropogenic Cl; (2) dissolution of dolomite, limestone and gypsum; (3) agricultural fertilizers (4) wastewater treatment. This study reveals that both natural and anthropogenic activities are the cause of groundwater variation in the basin.  相似文献

Platinum group minerals (PGM) are rather widespread as admixture in gold placer deposits in Tuva. The present paper reports new data on PGM in the Kundus gold placer confined to the Kaakhem ophiolite belt. The minerals are mainly represented by solid solutions of the Os-Ir-Ru system. They make up rims of sulfoarsenides, sulfides, and arsenides of the platinum group elements (PGE) developed after primary minerals. PGMs of this placer always contain traces of Pd (0.33–1.58 wt %), Cu (0.29–0.50 wt %), and As (0.03–2.17 wt %), as well as Ni and Sb (within the detection limit). Typomorphic features of minerals along with the set of main elements and isomorphic trace-elements in the major and secondary mineral species, suggest that sources for the studied placer was represented by the Alpine-type ultramafics and associated chromitites. We cannot also rule out that PGM mineralization was influenced later intrusions that promoted the formation of rims of sulfoarsenides, sulfides, and arsenides of PGE. The PGM rims are marked by the S and As isomorphism, which characterizes the composition of mixtures rather than independent mineral types (end members of isomorphic series). In one case, minerals are represented by the isomorphous mixture of sulfoarsenides with a limited role of sulfides; in another case, by arsenides with a limited role of sulfoarsenides.  相似文献

A characteristic of fluvial conglomerates is a gradual decrease in pebble size in the direction of the palaeocurrents. However, for the ancient braided stream investigated in this study, a deviation from this norm was found. The Middelvlei gold placer is a quartz pebble conglomerate that is mined in a South African goldfield, known as the West Wits Line, situated west of Johannesburg. Stratigraphically the placer occurs near the base of the Central Rand Group of the Witwatersrand Supergroup. In previous studies, the placer and the underlying sequence have been shown to be fluvial in origin, constituting a coarsening upward genetic increment of strata. The complete conformable succession, however, is only preserved in the distal parts of the depositional environment. In most parts of the goldfield the placer is separated from the underlying sequence by a progressive unconformity, which disappears deeper into the basin. This unconformity is thought to have formed during a progradation. Palaeocurrents of the Middelvlei placer are towards the south-southeast in the western parts of the study area and towards the south-east in the east. Maximum pebble size, however, decreases towards the west-southwest, that is in a direction roughly perpendicular to the palaeocurrents. A reconstruction of the palaeotopography of the base of the placer in the western parts of the study area revealed considerable variations in palaeoheight with a gradient of about 0·002 along depositional strike. The anomalous lateral pebble size variation of the placer is explained by postulating an eastward migration of the depositing braided stream, simultaneous with its progradation. During the eastward migration, erosion of the underlying sequence became progressively more severe. This created an eastward-thinning wedge of underlying strata. The results of the study do not invalidate lateral pebble size variation as a regional palaeoslope indicator. However, the findings suggest that caution should be exercised in the application of this indicator.  相似文献

Pyroxenes of the Bushveld Intrusion, South Africa   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1

New analyses are presented, for major, minor, and trace elements,of eleven Ca-rich pyroxenes, four bronzites, and two invertedpigeonites from the Bushveld layered basic intrusion. The twenty-threeanalyses now available are believed to represent the entireBushveld fractionation sequence. The Ca-rich pyroxene trendis from Ca45.4Mg49.6Fe5.0 to Ca42.7Mg0.6Fe56.8, the ferrohedenbergitesshowing no evidence of inversion from ferriferous ß-wollastonites.The Ca-poor pyroxene trend is from bronzite (Ca2.8Mg85.0Fe12.2)through pigeonites to ferropigeonites (approximately Ca3Mg27Fe55).All the pigeonitic pyroxenes have inverted to orthopyroxene. The compositional trends are remarkably similar to those ofthe Skaergaard pyroxene series, but the Bushveld sequence isthe most complete known for a single fractionated intrusion. The compositional and other variations of the pyroxenes, consideredtogether with those of the coexisting olivines and feldspars, leave little doubt that the Bushveld rocks originated by crystalaccumulation from a slowly cooled and fractionated intrusionof tholeiitic basalt magma. The slight but significant differences between the Bushveldand Skaergaard pyroxene trend characteristics can be explainedin terms of a displacement, in one intrusion as compared withthe other, of the liquidus and solidus surfaces relative tothe solvus and inversion surfaces in the system Wo—En—Fs.This may be due to minor differences in the initial magma compositionsof the two intrusions. Differences in the Mg/Fe ratios of Bushveldand Skaergaard coexisting pyroxene pairs are believed to bedue, at least in part, to the greater depth of the Bushveldmagma chamber. The Bushveld trends are briefly discussed in the light of recentexperimental studies on compositions within the Di-Hed-En-Fspyroxene quadrilate  相似文献

The development corridor concept has been regarded as an important development instrument in spatial planning and geography for many decades. Expanding literature on the theme indicates that development centres or nodes play an important role in the establishment of such corridors. Flows of goods and information between such centres are essential in creating conditions that are potentially favourable for further urban development along the communication axes connecting such centres. Combined, the various nodes form a unique flexible exchange environment allowing for dynamic synergies of interactive growth to achieve scope economies aided by fast and reliable corridors of transport and communication infrastructure. In the South African development sphere, there is strong belief that functional relationships between nodes can play a decisive role in the establishment of development corridors. The research showed that the degree to which economic activities are concentrated in the greater Gauteng region; the resulting current or emerging multinodal structural composition; and the flows of economic activities between the various nodes result in the creation of development corridors that channel and focus economic growth between networks of cities. This confirms the importance of corridors as spatial and economic development instruments. The research concluded that the core cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria are the central driving force in corridor development in Gauteng. They feature as the most dominant nodes, exerting great forces of attraction on the distribution of development and economic growth in the region. The research also suggests a degree of polycentrism whereby economic growth is channelled between networks of cities, however development potential is most favourable in areas in close proximity to primary centres and tends to be functionality driven.  相似文献

In this study a new geochemical reaction modelling methodology is used to shed light on the geochemical processes within Witwatersrand tailings impoundments and the evaluation of the geochemical impacts for future mining projects is evaluated. Information from international and local studies on tailings sulphidic tailings impoundments is used to develop a conceptual understanding on a typical Witwatersrand gold tailings impoundment. The tailings impoundments consist of 3 distinct geochemical zones: Oxidation Zone (OZ), a Transition Zone (TZ) and a Reduction Zone (RZ). Individual reaction models are developed for each of the 3 zones. The output of one model is used as an input to the next in spatial order. The results of the final model represent the tailings basal seepage characteristics, which indicate the most likely impacts on groundwater resources. The model results agree with existing information on AMD in the Witwatersrand. The results indicate that the tailings basal seepage is likely to be acidic (pH of ∼3.5), containing elevated concentrations of SO4 and trace metals (Al, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Zn and U). Predicted Fe concentrations are low, due to the low fO2 in the TZ and RZ and the buffering effect of the precipitation of K-jarosite in the OZ and TZ. This study therefore indicates that the methodology employed produces results that can be correlated to existing information and can thus be used as a methodology in the assessments of impacts from sulphidic tailings material for future mining projects.  相似文献
