Recent findings by the MER rover opportunity confirming the presence of iron minerals that can only be formed in the presence of water emphasize the study of analogous environments to Mars on Earth. The study of chemolithoautotrophic communities living in acidic iron-rich habitats is highly relevant in order to identify Mars analog environment-specific biomarkers. Iron oxidizing bacteria like Leptospirillum ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans have ways of life for which it is feasible to identify a past or present hypothetical niche on Mars. We have developed a strategy for biomarker identification based on: (i) search for biosignatures on acid and metal-rich environments; (ii) development of an immunosensor microarray; and (iii) integration into an instrument for autonomous and remote operation. The instrument that we have built, called Signs Of LIfe Detector (SOLID), is capable of processing a variety of samples for the detection of specific biomarkers. Antibodies against several bacterial strains have been developed and tested in a microarray biosensor on SOLID. Tests with field samples have been successfully performed, allowing the detection of L. ferrooxidans, A. ferrooxidans present in sediment samples.  相似文献

The extensive hematite deposit in Meridiani Planum was selected as the landing site for the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity because the site may have been favorable to the preservation of evidence of possible prebiotic or biotic processes. One of the proposed mechanisms for formation of this deposit involves surface weathering and coatings, exemplified on Earth by rock varnish. Microbial life, including microcolonial fungi and bacteria, is documented in rock varnish matrices from the southwestern United States and Australia. Limited evidence of this life is preserved as cells and cell molds mineralized by iron oxides and hydroxides, as well as by manganese oxides. Such mineralization of microbial cells has previously been demonstrated experimentally and documented in banded iron formations, hot spring deposits, and ferricrete soils. These types of deposits are examples of the four “water-rock interaction” scenarios proposed for formation of the hematite deposit on Mars. The instrument suite on Opportunity has the capability to distinguish among these proposed formation scenarios and, possibly, to detect traces that are suggestive of preserved martian microbiota. However, the confirmation of microfossils or preserved biosignatures will likely require the return of samples to terrestrial laboratories.  相似文献

Investigations of Mars as a potential location for life often make the assumption that where there are habitats, they will contain organisms. However, the observation of the ubiquitous distribution of life in habitable environments on the Earth does not imply the presence of life in martian habitats. Although uninhabited habitats are extremely rare on the Earth, a lack of a productive photosynthetic biosphere on Mars to generate organic carbon and oxygen, thus providing a rapidly available redox couple for energy acquisition by life and/or a lack of connectivity between habitats potentially increases the scope and abundance of uninhabited habitats for much of the geological history of the planet. Uninhabited habitats could have existed on Mars from the Noachian to the present-day in impact hydrothermal systems, megaflood systems, lacustrine environments, transient melted permafrost, gullies and local regions of volcanic activity; and there may be evidence for them in martian meteorites. Uninhabited habitats would provide control habitats to investigate the role of biology in planetary-scale geochemical processes on the Earth and they would provide new constraints on the habitability of Mars. Future robotic craft and samples returned from Mars will be able to directly show if uninhabited habitats exist or existed on Mars.  相似文献

Within the context of present and future in situ missions to Mars to investigate its habitability and to search for traces of life, we studied the habitability and traces of past life in ∼3.5 Ga-old volcanic sands deposited in littoral environments an analogue to Noachian environments on Mars. The environmental conditions on Noachian Mars (4.1-3.7 Ga) and the Early Archaean (4.0-3.3 Ga) Earth were, in many respects, similar: presence of liquid water, dense CO2 atmosphere, availability of carbon and bio-essential elements, and availability of energy. For this reason, information contained in Early Archaean terrestrial rocks concerning habitable conditions (on a microbial scale) and traces of past life are of relevance in defining strategies to be used to identify past habitats and past life on Mars. One such example is the 3.446 Ga-old Kitty’s Gap Chert in the Pilbara Craton, NW. Australia. This formation consists of volcanic sediments deposited in a coastal mudflat environment and is thus a relevant analogue for sediments deposited in shallow water environments on Noachian Mars. Two main types of habitat are represented, a volcanic (lithic) habitat and planar stabilized sediment surfaces in sunlit shallow waters. The sediments hosted small (<1 μm in size) microorganisms that formed colonies on volcanic particle surfaces and in pore waters within the volcanic sediments, as well as biofilms on stabilised sediment surfaces. The microorganisms included coccoids, filaments and rare rod-shaped organisms associated with microbial polymer (EPS). The preserved microbial community was apparently dominated by chemotrophic organisms but some locally transported filaments and filamentous mat fragments indicate that possibly photosynthetic mats formed nearby. Both microorganisms and sediments were silicified during very early diagenesis. There are no macroscopic traces of fossilised life in these volcanic sediments and sophisticated instrumentation and specialized sample preparation techniques are required to establish the biogenicity and syngenicity of the traces of past life. The fact that the traces of life are cryptic, and the necessity of using sophisticated instrumentation, reinforces the challenges and difficulties of in situ robotic missions to identify past life on Mars. We therefore recommend the return of samples from Mars to Earth for a definitive search for traces of life.  相似文献

Mariner 9 has provided a refutation or reinterpretation of several historical claims for Martian biology, and has permitted an important further characterization of the environmental constraints on possible Martian organisms. Four classes of conceivable Martian organisms are identified, depending on the environmental temperature, T, and water activity, aw: Class I, high T, high aw; Class II, low T, high aw; Class III, high T, low aw; and Class IV, low T, low aw. The Viking lander biology experiments are essentially oriented toward Class I organisms, although arguments are given for the conceivable presence on Mars of organisms in any of the four classes. Organisms which extract their water requirements from hydrated minerals or from ice are considered possible on Mars, and the high ultraviolet flux and low oxygen partial pressure are considered to be negligible impediments to Martian biology. Large organisms, possibly detectable by the Viking lander cameras, are not only possible on Mars; they may be favored. The surface distribution of Martian organisms and future search strategies for life on Mars are discussed.  相似文献

In January of 1982 we measured a microwave spectrum of CO in the Martian atmosphere utilizing the rotational J = 1 → 2 transition of CO. We have analyzed data and reanalyzed the microwave spectra of R. K. Kakar, J. W. Waters, and W. J. Wilson, (Science196, 1090–1091, 1977, measured in 1975) and J. C. Good and F. P. Schloerb, (Icarus47, 166–172, 1981 measured in 1980) in order to constrain estimates of the temporal variability of CO abundance in the Martian atmosphere. Our values of CO column density from the data of Karar et al., Good and Schloerb, and our own are 1.7 ± 0.9 × 1020, 3.0 ± 1.0 × 1020, and 4.6 ± 2.0 × 1020cm?2, respectively. The most recent estimate of CO column density from the 1967 infrared spectra of J. Connes, P. Connes, and J.P. Maillard, (Atlas de Spectres Infarouges de Venus, Mars, Jupiter, et Saturne, Editions due Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, Paris, 1969), is 2.0 ± 0.8 × 1020 cm?2 (L.D.G. Young and A.T. Young, Icarus30, 75–79, 1977). The large uncertainties given for the microwave measurements are due primarily to uncertainty in the difference between the continuum brightness temperature and atmospheric temperatures of Mars. We have accurately calculated the variation among the observations of the continuum (surface) brightness temperature of Mars, which is primaroly a function of the observed aspect of Mars. A more difficult problem to consider is variability of global atmospheric temperatures among the observations, particularly the effects of global dust storms and the ellipticity of the orbit of Mars. The large bars accompanying our estimates of CO column density from the three sets of microwave measurements are primarily caused by an assumed uncertainty of ±10°K in our atmospheric temperature model due to possible dust in the atmosphere. A qualitative consideration of seasonal variability of global atmospheric temperatures among the measurements suggests that there is not strong evidence for variability of the column abundance of CO on Mars, although variability of 0–100% over a time scale of several years is allowed by the data set. The implication for the variability of Mars O2 is, crudely, a factor of two less. We found that the altitude distribution of CO in the atmosphere of Mars was not well constrained by any of the spectra, although our spectrum was marginally better fitted by an altitude increasing profile of CO mixing ratios.  相似文献

Eolian sediments on Earth are mostly formed from quartz; they consist, in large part, of eolian sand deposits in deserts, silt and loess deposits in and adjoining present and former glaciated areas, and finally clay-sized particles carried in suspension for relatively long distances and deposited in oceanic areas by winds. The quartz particles in these regimes originally came from a granitic source; stresses in granitic rock formation, glacial action, and wind abrasion are largely responsible for making the particles available for the three kinds of eolian deposits. With respect to eolian sediments on Mars, it appears that an entirely different set of criteria must apply, but some critical parameters can usefully be compared. Evidence for free quartz on Mars is lacking and sand-sized particles are probably basaltic, although there does appear to be a deficit in the sand size range. Glacial action does not appear to be available as a large-scale particle producer but high-velocity winds could be efficient producers of very fine particles. Fine particles may aggregate in a similar way to that observed in the Australian regions where “parna” is seen; this could supply a silt mode on Mars. Impact experiments with basalt in eolian abrasion devices suggest that basalt sand-sized particles fragment rapidly to produce silt and clay-sized detritus. Cohesive forces must be more effective on Mars since the gravitational contribution to the bond/weight ratio (R) is lowe; if R = 1 at about 100 μm on Earth, then R = 1 at about 140 μm on Mars and a much greater range of deposits will be stable. Compared to the terrestrial situation, both larger and smaller particles can be expected to make significant contributions to eolian sediments on Mars. The low gravity and the high speed of moving particles and the relatively weak rock material of which they are composed will allow large-scale fine particle production.  相似文献

Lakes on Mars were formed under periglacial to glacial climates. Extreme conditions prevailed including freezing temperatures, low atmospheric pressure, high evaporation/sublimation rates, and liquid water reservoirs locked in aquifers below a thick cryosphere. Although many of the Martian paleolakes display evidence of a short period of activity consistent with these conditions, others display clear evidence of lifetimes ranging from 104 to 105 years. The discovery of young seeping processes in impact craters and pole-facing valley slopes along with young volcanic activity raise questions about the conditions and limitations of liquid water flow and potential lacustrine activity today on Mars. Current climate models show that in today's conditions there exist regions on Mars of sols above the triple point and below boiling point of water that could provide hydrogeological conditions comparable to these of the Antarctic Dry Valley lakes (with the exception of the atmosphere pressure). The locations of the most recent Martian paleolakes are correlated with these regions. Throughout the history of Mars, lakes generated diversified environments, which could have provided potential habitats for life. The recent discovery of young energy sources from volcanism and the potential for liquid water reinforces the possibility of extant life on Mars, and suggests recent ponds and ancient paleolakes as primary targets for rover and sample return missions.  相似文献

The Raman microspectra of the Nakhla SNC meteorite, which probably originates from Mars, are reported here for the first time. The specimen is shown to be heterogeneous, even at a sampling level of 2 μm, but several important mineralogical features have been identified, including clinopyroxene, olivine and plagioclase. In some sampling regions, α-quartz particles are evident and in one sample region the ν(CO2−3) mode of calcite at 1086 cm−1 is found. There is no evidence for organic chemical content detectable in this meteorite specimen, based on an absence of ν(CH) and δ(CH2) modes near 3000 and 1400 cm−1, respectively. Comparative Raman spectroscopic analyses were made on epilithic examples of Xanthoria elegans from Crater Cirque, northern Victoria Land, Antarctica, and cryptoendoliths from East Beacon, McMurdo Dry Valleys, as positive controls for microbial organics in cold, arid habitats analogous to former Martian conditions. Finally, an assessment is made of the potential role of Raman spectroscopy for extra-terrestrial characterisation of geological specimens.  相似文献

Current surface conditions (strong oxidative atmosphere, UV radiation, low temperatures and xeric conditions) on Mars are considered extremely challenging for life. The question is whether there are any features on Mars that could exert a protective effect against the sterilizing conditions detected on its surface. Potential habitability in the subsurface would increase if the overlaying material played a protective role. With the aim of evaluating this possibility we studied the viability of two microorganisms under different conditions in a Mars simulation chamber. An acidophilic chemolithotroph isolated from Río Tinto belonging to the Acidithiobacillus genus and Deinococcus radiodurans, a radiation resistant microorganism, were exposed to simulated Mars conditions under the protection of a layer of ferric oxides and hydroxides, a Mars regolith analogue. Samples of these microorganisms were exposed to UV radiation in Mars atmospheric conditions at different time intervals under the protection of 2 and 5 mm layers of oxidized iron minerals. Viability was evaluated by inoculation on fresh media and characterization of their growth cultures. Here we report the survival capability of both bacteria to simulated Mars environmental conditions.  相似文献

Based on our new and previous determinations of halogens in SNC meteorites, the bulk concentrations of halogens in the SPB, which is thought to be Mars, are estimated. The two-component model for the formation of terrestrial planets as proposed byA. E. Ringwood (Geochem. J. 11, 111–135 (1977) andOn the Origin of the Earth and Moon, Springer-Verlag, New York, 1979) andH. Wa¨nke (Philos. Trans. Roy. Soc. London, Ser. A 303, 287–302 (1981) is further substantiated. It is argued that almost all of the H2O added to Mars during its homogeneous accretion was converted on reaction with metallic Fe to H2, which escaped. By comparing the solubilities of H2O and HCl in molten silicates, the amount of H2O left in the mantle of Mars at the end of accretion can be related to the abundance of Cl. In this way an H2O content in the Martian mantle of 36 ppm is obtained, corresponding to an ocean covering the whole planet to a depth of about 130 m.The huge quantities of H2 produced by the reaction of H2O with metallic iron should also have removed other volatile species by hydrodynamic escape. Thus it is postulated that the present atmospheres of Venus, Earth, and Mars were formed by degassing the interiors of the planets, after the production of H2 had ceased, i.e., after metallic iron was no longer available. It is also postulated that the large differences in the amounts of primordial rare gases in the atmospheres of Venus, Earth, and Mars are due mainly to different loss factors.Except for gaseous species, Mars is found to be richer in volatile (halogens) and moderately volatile elements than the Earth. The resulting low release factor of40Ar for Mars is attributed to a low degree of fractionation, leading to a relatively small crustal enrichment of even the most incompatible elements like K.  相似文献

We report on laboratory experiments in which we allowed an SNC-derived mineral mix to react with pure water under a simulated Mars atmosphere for 7 months. These experiments were performed at one bar and at three different temperatures in order to simulate the subsurface conditions that most likely exist where liquid water and rock interact on Mars today. The dominant cations dissolved in the solutions we produced, which may be characterized as dilute brines, are Ca2+, Mg2+, Al3+, and Na+, while the major anions are dissolved C, F, SO2−4 and Cl. Typical solution pH was in the range of 4.2-6.0. Abundance patterns of elements in our synthetic sulfate-chloride brines are distinctly unlike those of terrestrial ocean water or continental waters, however, they are quite similar to those measured in the martian fines at the Mars Pathfinder and Viking 1 and 2 Landing sites. This suggests that salts present in the martian regolith may have formed over time as a result of the interaction of surface or subsurface liquid water with basalts in the presence of a martian atmosphere similar in composition to that of today. If most of the mobile surface layer was formed during the Noachian when erosion rates were much higher than at present, and if this layer is homogeneous in salt composition, the total amount of salt in the martian fines is approximately the same as in the Earth's oceans. The minimum quantity of circulating water necessary to deposit this amount of salt is approximately equivalent to a global layer 625 m deep.  相似文献

The absolute reaction cross sections and reaction rate coefficients as a function of photoionisation energy for 25 ion-molecule reactions (charge transfer reactions except for one) have been measured between the most abundant species present as ions or neutral in the Mars, Venus and Earth ionospheres: O2, N2, NO, CO, Ar and CO2.This study shows the strong influence of electronic as well as vibrational internal energy on most ion-molecule reactions. In particular endothermic charge transfer reactions are driven by electronic excitation of O2+ and NO+ ions in their a4Πu and a3Σ+ metastable states, respectively. Moreover, it is shown that lifetimes of these metastable states are sufficient to survive the mean free path in the lowest part of ionospheres and therefore express their enhanced reactivity. The reactions of O2+ with NO as well as the reactions of CO2+ with NO, O2, CO and to a less extent N2 are driven by vibrational excitation. N2+ and CO+ reactions vary much less with photon energy than the other ones, except for the case of reactions with Ar. The effects of the molecular ion internal energy content on their reactivity must be included in the ionospheric models for most of the reactions investigated in the present work. It is also the case for the effect of collision energy on the CO++M reactions as we expect that a significant proportion of these CO+ could be produced with translational energy by dissociation of doubly charged CO22+, in particular in the Mars ionosphere. Recommended effective rate constant values are given as a function of VUV photon energy.  相似文献

The recent discovery of methane on Mars has led to much discussion concerning its origin. On Earth, the isotopic signatures of methane vary with the nature of its production. Specifically, the ratios among 12CH4, 13CH4, and 12CH3D differ for biotic and abiotic origins. On Mars, measuring these ratios would provide insights into the origins of methane and measurements of water isotopologues co-released with methane would assist in testing their chemical relationship. Since 1997, we have been measuring HDO and H2O in Mars’ atmosphere and comparing their ratio to that in Earth’s oceans. We recently incorporated a line-by-line radiative transfer model (LBLRTM) into our analysis. Here, we present a map for [HDO]/[H2O] along the central meridian (154°W) for Ls=50°. From these results, we constructed models to determine the observational conditions needed to quantify the isotopic ratios of methane in Mars’ atmosphere. Current ground-based instruments lack the spectral resolution and sensitivity needed to make these measurements. Measurements of the isotopologues of methane will likely require in situ sampling.  相似文献

Using the shape model of Mars GTM090AA in terms of spherical harmonics complete to degree and order 90 and gravitational field model of Mars GGM2BC80 in terms of spherical harmonics complete to degree and order 80, both from Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) mission, the geometry (shape) and gravity potential value of reference equipotential surface of Mars (Areoid) are computed based on a constrained optimization problem. In this paper, the Areoid is defined as a reference equipotential surface, which best fits to the shape of Mars in least squares sense. The estimated gravity potential value of the Areoid from this study, i.e. W 0 = (12,654,875 ± 69) (m2/s2), is used as one of the four fundamental gravity parameters of Mars namely, {W 0, GM, ω, J 20}, i.e. {Areoid’s gravity potential, gravitational constant of Mars, angular velocity of Mars, second zonal spherical harmonic of gravitational field expansion of Mars}, to compute a bi-axial reference ellipsoid of Somigliana-Pizzetti type as the hydrostatic approximate figure of Mars. The estimated values of semi-major and semi-minor axis of the computed reference ellipsoid of Mars are (3,395,428 ± 19) (m), and (3,377,678 ± 19) (m), respectively. Finally the computed Areoid is presented with respect to the computed reference ellipsoid.  相似文献

Due to the discovery of the evaporitic environment on the Martian surface, there is a reasonable possibility that evaporites served (or still serve) as habitats for microbial life if ever present on Mars. At the very least, if no signatures of extant life exist within these rocks, it may sustain molecular remnants as evidence for living organisms in the past. β-Carotene, among other carotenoids, could be such a suitable biomarker. In this study, Raman micro-spectroscopy was tested as a nondestructive method of determining the presence of β-carotene in experimentally prepared evaporitic matrices. Samples prepared by mixing β-carotene with powdered gypsum (CaSO4·2H2O), halite (NaCl) and epsomite (MgSO4·7H2O) were analyzed using a 785 nm excitation source. Various concentrations of β-carotene in the matrices were investigated to determine the lowest β-carotene content detectable by Raman micro-spectroscopy. Mixtures were also measured with a laser beam permeating the crystals of gypsum and epsomite in order to evaluate the possibility of identifying β-carotene inside the mineral matrix. We were able to obtain a clear β-carotene signal at the 10 mg kg−1 concentration level—the number of registered β-carotene Raman bands differed depending on the particular mineral matrix. Spectral signatures of β-carotene were detected even when analyzing samples containing 1 mg kg−1 of this molecule. The 10-100 mg kg−1 of β-carotene in mineral matrices (halite, epsomite) was detected when analyzed through the monocrystal of gypsum and epsomite, respectively. These results will aid both in-situ analyses on Mars and sample analyses on Earth.  相似文献

Observations of ozone on Mars were made using the Goddard Space Flight Center's Infrared Heterodyne Spectrometer and Heterodyne Instrument for Planetary Wind and Composition at the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility. Ozone is an important observable tracer of martian photochemistry. Infrared heterodyne spectroscopy with spectral resolution ?106 is the only technique that directly measures ozone in the martian atmosphere from the surface of the Earth. Ozone column abundances down to the martian surface were acquired in seven data sets taken between 1988 and 2003 at various orbital positions (LS=40°, 74°, 102°, 115°, 202°, 208°, 291°). Ozone abundances are compared with those retrieved using ultraviolet techniques, showing good agreement. Odd hydrogen (HOX) chemistry predicts anticorrelation of ozone and water vapor abundances. Retrieved ozone abundances consistently show anticorrelation with corresponding water vapor abundances, providing strong confirmation of odd hydrogen activity. Deviation from strict anticorrelation between the observed total column densities of ozone and water vapor suggests that constituent vertical distribution is an additional, significant factor.  相似文献

With 2 years of tracking data collection from the MRO spacecraft, there is noticeable improvement in the high frequency portion of the spherical harmonic Mars gravity field. The new JPL Mars gravity fields, MRO110B and MRO110B2, show resolution near degree 90. Additional years of MGS and Mars Odyssey tracking data result in improvement for the seasonal gravity changes which compares well to global circulation models and Odyssey neutron data and Mars rotation and precession (). Once atmospheric dust is accounted for in the spacecraft solar pressure model, solutions for Mars solar tide are consistent between data sets and show slightly larger values (k2 = 0.164 ± 0.009, after correction for atmospheric tide) compared to previous results, further constraining core models. An additional 4 years of Mars range data improves the Mars ephemeris, determines 21 asteroid masses and bounds solar mass loss (dGMSun/dt < 1.6 × 10−13 GMSun year−1).  相似文献

Ground-based observations of the occultation of ? Gem by Mars on April 8, 1976 have been reduced in the manner of French et al. [Icarus 33, 186–202 (1978)] to yield the scale height and temperature profiles of the Martian atmosphere for number densities between 1013 and 1015 cm?3. The deduced variations in temperature are remarkably similar to those obtained by Elliot et al. [Astrophys. J.217, 661–679 (1977)] and to the in situ measurements from the Viking landers.  相似文献

A series of calculated thermal histories of Mars is presented, and their possible relation to surface tectonic history is discussed. The models include convective heat transport through an empirical approximation, and heating by radioactivity and core segregation. Initial temperature, Ti, and the timing and duration of core segregation are treated as free parameters. Ti is the main determinant of Martian thermal evolution: as it is varied from 20 to 100% of the present mean temperature, the maximum in surface heat flux moves from very recent to very early in Martian history. For the latter cases, the details of core segregation control the detailed timing of a peak in the thermal flux that exceeded 100 mW/m2. It is suggested that the early disruption of cratered terrain crust in the northern hemisphere and subsequent volcanic resurfacing may have been related to core segregation. This would be consistent with a scenario in which an early period of core segregation generated a marked peak in the thermal flux that may have lead to extensivev partial melting and volcanism. This scenario would require Mars to have had an initial mean temperature comparable to the present value.  相似文献
