The question of total resonant absorption of acoustic oscillations in sunspots is studied for cylindrical 1-D flux tubes that are stratified only in the radial direction and surrounded by a uniform, non-magnetic plasma. The numerical investigation of Goossens and Poedts (1992) in linear resistive MHD is taken further by increasing the strength of the azimuthal magnetic field in the equilibrium flux tubes. For relatively strong azimuthal magnetic fields, total absorption is found over a relatively wide range of spot radii.  相似文献

The present paper discusses the implementation of the SGHR method (Sakurai, Goossens, and Hollweg, 1991; Goossens, Ruderman, and Hollweg, 1995) in a numerical scheme for determining resonantly driven Alfvén waves in nonuniform magnetic flux tubes. This method is based on jump conditions over the dissipative layer which are obtained from an asymptotic analysis of analytical solutions to simplified versions of the linear non-ideal MHD equations in this dissipative layer. The emphasis is on the computational simplicity and the accuracy of the method. The method derives its computational simplicity from the fact that it circumvents the numerical integration of the non-ideal MHD equations. The implementation only requires the numerical integration of the ideal MHD equations away from the resonant position. There is no need for a special integration scheme and a PC suffices as a hardware tool. The accuracy of the method is verified by means of test computations. These test computations deal with the loss of power of acoustic waves in sunspots by resonant absorption of Alfvén waves. Results for the absorption coefficients obtained with the SGHR method are compared with known results in the literature obtained by integration of the full set of the linearized non-ideal MHD equations. The agreement is excellent and identifies the SGHR method as a powerful and extremely easy to use tool for studying resonant Alfvén waves.  相似文献

The present paper considers resonant slow waves in 1D non-uniform magnetic flux tubes in dissipative MHD. Analytical solutions are obtained for the Lagrangian displacement and the Eulerian perturbation of the total pressure for both static and stationary equilibrium states. From these analytical solutions we obtain the fundamental conservation law and the jump conditions for resonant slow waves in dissipative MHD. The validity of the ideal conservation law and jump conditions obtained by Sakurai, Goossens, and Hollweg (1991) for static equilibria and Goossens, Hollweg, and Sakurai (1992) for stationary equilibria is justified in dissipative MHD.  相似文献

The effect of equilibrium flow on linear Alfvén resonances in coronal loops is studied in the compressible viscous MHD model. By means of a finite element code, the full set of linearised driven MHD equations are solved for a one-dimensional equilibrium model in which the equilibrium quantities depend only on the radial coordinate. Computations of resonant absorption of Alfvén waves for two classes of coronal loop models show that the efficiency of the process of resonant absorption strongly depends on both the equilibrium parameters and the characteristics of the resonant wave. We find that a steady equilibrium shear flow can also significantly influence the resonant absorption of Alfvén waves in coronal magnetic flux tubes. The presence of an equilibrium flow may therefore be important for resonant Alfvén waves and coronal heating. A parametric analysis also shows that the resonant absorption can be strongly enhanced by the equilibrium flow, even up to total dissipation of the incoming wave.  相似文献

Resonant absorption of MHD waves on a nonuniform flux tube is investigated as a driven problem for a 1D cylindrical equilibrium. The variation of the fractional absorption is studied as a function of the frequency and its relation to the eigenvalue problem of the MHD radiating eigenmodes of the nonuniform flux tube is established. The optimal frequencies producing maximal fractional absorption are determined and the condition for total absorption is obtained. This condition defines an impedance matching and is fulfilled for an equilibrium that is fine tuned with respect to the incoming wave. The variation of the spatial wave solutions with respect to the frequency is explained as due to the variation of the real and imaginary parts of the dispersion relation of the MHD radiating eigenmodes with respect to the real driving frequency.  相似文献

The present paper extends the analysis by Sakurai, Goossens, and Hollweg (1991) on resonant Alfvén waves in nonuniform magnetic flux tubes. It proves that the fundamental conservation law for resonant Alfvén waves found in ideal MHD by Sakurai, Goossens, and Hollweg remains valid in dissipative MHD. This guarantees that the jump conditions of Sakurai, Goossens, and Hollweg, that connect the ideal MHD solutions for r , andP across the dissipative layer, are correct. In addition, the present paper replaces the complicated dissipative MHD solutions obtained by Sakurai, Goossens, and Hollweg for r , andP in terms of double integrals of Hankel functions of complex argument of order with compact analytical solutions that allow a straightforward mathematical and physical interpretation. Finally, it presents an analytical dissipative MHD solution for the component of the Lagrangian displacement in the magnetic surfaces perpendicular to the magnetic field lines which enables us to determine the dominant dynamics of resonant Alfvén waves in dissipative MHD.  相似文献

Oscillations of magnetic flux tubes are of great importance as they contain information about the geometry and fine structure of the flux tubes. Here we derive and analytically solve in terms of Kummer’s functions the linear governing equations of wave propagation for sausage surface and body modes (m=0) of a magnetically twisted compressible flux tube embedded in a compressible uniformly magnetized plasma environment in cylindrical geometry. A general dispersion relation is obtained for such flux tubes. Numerical solutions for the phase velocity are obtained for a wide range of wavenumbers and for varying magnetic twist. The effect of magnetic twist on the period of oscillations of sausage surface modes for different values of the wavenumber and vertical magnetic field strength is calculated for representative photospheric and coronal conditions. These results generalize and extend previous studies of MHD waves obtained for incompressible or for compressible but nontwisted flux tubes. It is found that magnetic twist may change the period of sausage surface waves of the order of a few percent when compared to counterparts in straight nontwisted flux tubes. This information will be most relevant when high-resolution observations are used for diagnostic exploration of MHD wave guides in analogy to solar-interior studies by means of global eigenoscillations in helioseismology.

We present recent 3-D MHD numerical simulations of the non-linear dynamical evolution of magnetic flux tubes in an adiabatically stratified convection zone in spherical geometry, using the anelastic spherical harmonic (ASH) code.We seek to understand the mechanism of emergence of strong toroidal fields from the base of the solar convection zone to the solar surface as active regions. We confirm the results obtained in cartesian geometry that flux tubes that are not twisted split into two counter vortices before reaching the top of the convection zone. Moreover, we find that twisted tubes undergo the poleward-slip instability due to an unbalanced magnetic curvature force which gives the tube a poleward motion both in the non-rotating and in the rotating case. This poleward drift is found to be more pronounced on tubes originally located at high latitudes. Finally, rotation is found to decrease the rise velocity of the flux tubes through the convection zone, especially when the tube is introduced at low latitudes. (© 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. This paper considers driven resonant nonlinear slow magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves in dissipative steady plasmas. A theory developed by Ruderman, Hollweg, and Goossens (1997) is used and extended to study the effect of steady flows on the nonlinear resonant behaviour of slow MHD waves in slow dissipative layers. The method of matched asymptotic expansions is used to describe the behaviour of the wave variables in the slow dissipative layer. The nonlinear analogue of the connection formulae for slow MHD waves obtained previously by Goossens, Hollweg, and Sakurai (1992) and Erdélyi (1997) in linear MHD, are derived. The effect of an equilibrium flow results partly in a Doppler shift of the available frequency for slow resonance and partly in the modification of the width of the dissipative layer.  相似文献

The resonant absorption of small amplitude surface Alfvén waves is studied in nonlinear incompressible MHD for a viscous and resistive plasma. The reductive perturbation method is used to obtain the equation that governs the spatial and temporal behaviour of small amplitude nonlinear surface Alfvén waves. Numerical solutions to this equation are obtained under the initial condition that att = 0 the spatial variation is purely sinusoidal. The numerical results show that nonlinearity accelerates the wave damping due to resonant absorption. Resonant absorption is a more efficient wave damping mechanism than can be anticipated on the basis of linear theory.  相似文献

The standing magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) quasi-linear modes in a zero-β cylindrical magnetic flux tube that undergoes a longitudinal density stratification and radial density structuring are considered. The radial structuring is assumed to have a step-like density profile. The dispersion relation for the fast MHD body waves is derived and solved numerically to obtain the frequencies of the fundamental, first-overtone and second-overtone   k = 1, 2, 3  modes of both kink  ( m = 1)  and fluting  ( m = 2)  waves, where k and m are the longitudinal and azimuthal mode numbers, respectively. Damping rates due to both viscous and resistive dissipations in the presence of the density stratification are derived and solved numerically for the first three modes of both kink and fluting waves.  相似文献

We investigated the propagation of kink waves in thin and isothermal expanding flux tubes in cylindrical geometry. By using the method of radial expansion for fluctuating variables we obtained a new kink wave equation. We show that including the radial component of the tube magnetic field leads to cutoff-free propagation of kink waves along thin flux tubes.  相似文献

The standing quasi-modes of the ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in a zero-β cylindrical magnetic flux tube that undergoes a longitudinal density stratification and radial density structuring are considered. The radial structuring is assumed to be a linearly varying density profile. Using the relevant connection formulae of the resonant absorption, the dispersion relation for the fast MHD body waves is derived and solved numerically to obtain both the frequencies and damping rates of the fundamental and first-overtone,   k = 1, 2  , modes of both the kink  ( m = 1)  and fluting  ( m = 2)  waves, where k and m are the longitudinal and azimuthal mode numbers, respectively.  相似文献

The stability of ballooning modes in coronal arcades is studied using linear visco-resistive MHD. Rigid wall conditions are adopted for modelling the photospheric line-tying of the magnetic field. The full Braginskii viscosity stress tensor is used and particular attention is given to the effect of the viscosity coefficient 3 which was left out of an earlier investigation by Van der Linden, Goossens, and Hood (1987, 1988). The numerical results for shearless arcades show that the coefficient 3 has a stabilizing effect. However, for realistic values of the equilibrium quantities the stabilizing effect by 3 can be neglected in comparison with the strong stabilizing effect of the perpendicular viscosity. The effect of magnetic field strength and mode number on stability are determined. In particular it is found that there exists a critical field strength for every mode number such that the mode is stable for weaker fields and unstable for stronger fields.  相似文献

The oscillatory modes of a magnetically twisted compressible flux tube embedded in a compressible magnetic environment are investigated in cylindrical geometry. Solutions to the governing equations to linear wave perturbations are derived in terms of Whittaker’s functions. A general dispersion equation is obtained in terms of Kummer’s functions for the approximation of weak and uniform internal twist, which is a good initial working model for flux tubes in solar applications. The sausage, kink and fluting modes are examined by means of the derived exact dispersion equation. The solutions of this general dispersion equation are found numerically under plasma conditions representative of the solar photosphere and corona. Solutions for the phase speed of the allowed eigenmodes are obtained for a range of wavenumbers and varying magnetic twist. Our results generalise previous classical and widely applied studies of MHD waves and oscillations in magnetic loops without a magnetic twist. Potential applications to solar magneto-seismology are discussed.  相似文献

The exact nonlinear cylindrical solution for incompressible Hall – magnetohydrodynamic (HMHD) waves, including dissipation, essentially from electron – neutral collisions, is obtained in a uniformly rotating, weakly ionized plasma such as exists in photospheric flux tubes. The ω – k relation of the waves, called here Hall – MHD waves, demonstrates the dispersive nature of the waves, introduced by the Hall effect, at large axial and radial wavenumbers. The Hall – MHD waves are in general elliptically polarized. The partially ionized plasma supports lower frequency modes, lowered by the factor δ≡ratio of the ion mass density to the neutral particle mass density, as compared to the fully ionized plasma (δ=1). The relation between the velocity and the magnetic field fluctuations departs significantly from the equipartition found in Alfvén waves. These short-wavelength and arbitrarily large amplitude waves could contribute toward the heating of the solar atmosphere.  相似文献

Discrete Alfvén waves in coronal loops and prominences are investigated in non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics. The non-ideal effects included are anisotropic, thermal conduction, and optically thin radiation. The classic ideal Alfvén continuum is not altered by these non-ideal effects, but the discrete Alfvén modes, which exist under certain conditions above or below the Alfvén continuum in ideal MHD, are shown to be influenced by non-adiabatic effects. The existence of discrete, non-adiabatic Alfvén waves, and their damping and overstability are examined for 1D cylindrical equilibrium states with twisted magnetic fields. First, analytic results are obtained for modes of high radial order by means of a WKB-analysis. The subspectrum of discrete Alfvén modes is computed with a numerical code, with particular emphasis on the modes of low radial order. The results show that discrete Alfvén waves are of potential importance for solar applications and also that the information obtained with the WKB-analysis is of limited use in this context.Research Assistant of the Belgian National for Scientific Research.  相似文献

The propagation of linear and non-linear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) waves in a straight homogeneous cylindrical magnetic flux tube embedded in a homogeneous magnetic environment is investigated. Both the tube and its environment are in steady state. Steady flows break the symmetry of forward (field-aligned) and backward (anti-parallel to magnetic field) propagating MHD wave modes because of the induced Doppler shifts. It is shown that strong enough flows change the sense of propagation of MHD waves. The flow also induces shifts in cut-off values and phase-speeds of the waves. Under photospheric conditions, if the flow is strong enough, the slow surface modes may disappear and the fast body modes may become present. The crossing of modes is also observed due to the presence of flows. The effect of steady-state background has to be considered particularly carefully when evaluating observation signatures of MHD waves for diagnostics in the solar atmosphere.  相似文献
