Spinal abnormalities are common in farmed Chinook Salmon in New Zealand. We report spinal abnormalities in adult Chinook salmon which were predominantly hatchery reared and released as smolts and which we term free-living. We compare these to rates seen in farmed New Zealand salmon. 101 free-living adult salmon were radiographically assessed for spinal curvatures (lordosis, kyphosis, scoliosis; LKS) and other vertebral abnormalities. Severity of abnormality was assessed on a three-point scale. Abnormal vertebral bodies were detected in 88.1% of free-living salmon. Spinal curvatures were the most common abnormality type with 83.2% of fish showing this abnormality but only one free-living Chinook had LKS of severity greater than 1. Farmed Chinook salmon are reported to have LKS rates of 29% with 18% of LKS abnormalities of severity greater than 1. These results suggest that free-living Chinook salmon frequently develop spinal abnormalities, but these abnormalities are less severe than those observed in farmed salmon.  相似文献

Landlocked sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka), ranging in fork length (FL) from 105 to 313 mm, were captured in fine‐mesh gill nets set in the limnetic zone of the Waitaki hydro lakes (44° 30′ S, 170° 10’ E) in the South Island, New Zealand. A total of 443 stomachs was examined and the frequency of occurrence, volume and weight of prey items calculated. In the Ahuriri Arm of Lake Benmore the principal food (54% by weight) was zooplankton (Boeckella dilatata) whereas in the Haldon Arm of Lake Benmore it was larval and juvenile common bullies (Gobiomorphus cotidi‐anus) (73% by volume). In Lake Waitaki in winter, salmon had eaten insects (43% by volume) with smaller amounts of snails (Potamopyrgus antipo‐darum, 23%) and bullies (24%). In Lake Ohau adult insects may be an important food. There were also variations in diet with season and fish size. The stomachs of 147 brown trout (Salmo trutta) and 181 rainbow trout (S. gairdnerii) caught in the same gill nets were also examined. In contrast to sockeye salmon stomachs they contained negligible amounts of zooplankton (< 1% by weight) and large amounts of aquatic insects (50–58% by weight in the Ahuriri Arm of Lake Benmore). Comparisons with juvenile sockeye salmon and kokanee in North American lakes are made. The impact of introductions of sockeye salmon into other New Zealand lakes is discussed.  相似文献

At 2‐monthly intervals between March 1974 and January 1975 seawater temperature and salinity (at 0 m and 5 m depths) and turbidity (as Secchi disc visibility) were measured in Port Fitzroy and adjacent bays on Great Barrier Island (36°11'S, 175°21'E). A seasonal pattern was evident in all three parameters. Variation between depths and between high and low tides was generally only slight, although differences of up to 3.6°c and 12.58‰ were recorded occasionally. Maximum temperatures (22–23°c) occurred in January, with minima (13–14°c) in July. Salinities were generally between 35.0 and 35.6‰, but values as low as 22.25‰ at the surface were recorded after heavy rainfall. Secehi disc visibility measurements of turbidity varied between 2.0 and 12.5 m, but were usually 5–9 m.

A graded series of four generalised areas was distinguished, ranging from sheltered, almost estuarine inner bays, to exposed open water with properties similar to outer Hauraki Gulf water.

The circulation through Port Fitzroy comprises the main exchange of water through the northern entrance channel, causing a southerly movement of water on the flood tide and a northerly movement on the ebb, together with a small compensatory exchange through the narrow southern entrance.  相似文献

The breeding and settlement seasons of the intertidal barnacles Chamaesipho brunnea, C. columna and Elminius plicatus were determined, and experiments using cages on the shore to examine barnacle survival and growth rate at four levels were carried out at Leigh during 1964–66.

Chamaesipho brunnea bred in spring and summer; C. columna and E. plicatus bred throughout the year, but settled intermittently. When protected from predators and from overgrowth by algae, all three species survived at levels lower than normal. At higher levels C. columna, E. modestus, Balanus trigonus and Tetraclita purpuraseens survived for significant periods (C. brunnea occurs naturally higher on the shore than the highest experimental level).  相似文献

The male of Doropygus platylhorax Jones, 1974 and two new species of Doropygus (D. louisae and D. spinosus) are described and illustrated. The specimens of Doropygus described by Schellenberg (1922) as D. pulex are assigned to the new species D. louisae. Specimens of Ophioseides (Scolecimorpha) joubini described by Schellenberg (1922) have been re‐examined together with fresh material, and have been described as a new species, Ophioseides schellen‐bergi.  相似文献

Lepidocybium flavobrunneum (Smith, 1849) is widespread in warmer oceanic waters and has recently been recorded in the catches of tuna longline vessels in the New Zealand region. Twenty‐five specimens were caught at 31°46′‐32°03′S, 170°49′‐171°11′ E on 23–27 June 1979, thus extending the known range of the species to northern New Zealand.  相似文献

A new echiuran Thalassema malakhovi, collected at 20 m depth off the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, is described. The possibility of using the structure of the nephrostome for subgrouping Thalassema species is discussed. The generic diagnosis of Thalassema Pallas is given.  相似文献

Southern right whales (Eubalaena australis) were widespread in New Zealand waters before commercial whaling in the nineteenth century caused drastic declines in their abundance and distribution. Following the cessation of whaling, the population has been recovering and is now slowly recolonising its former range. Estimates of population demographics, including reproductive output, are essential for predicting the trajectory of this population. We gathered photo-identification data on female southern right whales during annual field trips to the Auckland Islands, the principal calving area in New Zealand waters. Forty-five calving intervals were observed between 2006 and 2013 (mean interval?=?3.31 years, 95% CI?=?3.06–3.57). Incorporating the effects of possible missed calving events produced a plausible range of mean calving intervals from 3.17 to 3.31 years. Our results suggest that the calving interval of New Zealand southern right whales is similar to that found in populations elsewhere.  相似文献

A second species of Neophrynichthys is described from 20 specimens collected from the Campbell Plateau, south of South Island, New Zealand. It differs from its sole congener, N. latus, in having 25–26 pectoral rays (versus 22–24), cirri on head more than twice as large, half as few (c. 50 versus >100), and generally absent from the mid‐region behind the eyes (versus being relatively dense), and in spotted colour pattern covering much less than 50% of the dorsal surface of the head (versus >50%). This new species is the sixth psychrolutid known from New Zealand. The genus Neophrynichthys is formally diagnosed by two synapomorphic characters unique among psychrolutids: having light spots on a dark ground colour and having an open fourth and fifth infraorbital, fifth and sixth cranial arch, medial extrascapular, and posterior tabular of the pterotic.  相似文献

Possible invertebrate intermediate hosts of Anisakis simplex (Rudolphi, 1809, det. Krabbe, 1878), Thynnascaris adunca (Rudolphi, 1802), and Pseudoterranova (= Phocanema) decipiens (Krabbe, 1878) were determined from examination of stomach contents of teleosts which are regularly infected by these parasites. The euphausiid, Nyctiphanes australis, and the galatheid crab, Munida gregaria, are possible sources of A. simplex larvae. M. gregaria is a definite source of T. adunca larvae (and adults). Smaller zooplankton (e.g., copepods and decapod larvae) could also be sources of T. adunca larvae. No potential hosts of P. decipiens larvae were apparent. Naturally occurring invertebrate hosts of anisakids were found in plankton samples. A. simplex larvae were found in N. australis. T. adunca larvae occurred in chaetognaths (Sagitta spp.), a medusa, and a decapod larva. These anisakid larvae are all morphologically similar to Stage III larvae from teleosts. Experimental infection of N. australis and M. gregaria with Stage II larvae of A. simplex and T. adunca was unsuccessful. Infection rates, host specificity, and larval morphology are discussed.  相似文献

The phytoplankton population from a station in the Jellicoe Channel area of the Hauraki Gulf, New Zealand, was fairly constant, in terms of total population and species composition, throughout the year. Correspondence analysis enabled us to identify 3 groups of species. The largest of these comprised the core species which were present most of the time and included some, such as the coccolithophores, with a strongly seasonal occurrence. The species in the second group were mainly large centric diatoms and appeared for short periods during the winter months, apparently brought in by incursions of oceanic water. The third group of species occurred between April 1970 and October 1971 when there was a period of unusually warm weather: the winds were lighter and more often blowing onshore and this perhaps led to warmer, less nutrient‐rich surface waters being brought into the Gulf.  相似文献

The water chemistry, flora, and fauna of Lake Ngahewa are described. Its waters are coloured by humic material from a flax swamp and the mean carbon: nitrogen ratio of the sediments lies in the range for dystrophic lakes. Thermal stratification is very weak or absent during summer, although deoxygenation occurs at depths below 3 m in late summer. The lake is highly productive and has a diverse phytoplankton and zooplankton population, which is different in species composition from other nearby eutrophic lakes; some algal species common in nearby eutrophic lakes are absent, and there is a high ratio of rotifers to cladocerans and copepods.

The high levels of dissolved phosphorus (42.2 mg.m‐3) and nitrogen (up to 36.1 mg.m‐3 NO3‐N) in the lake waters, and the differences in the flora and fauna compared with neighbouring lakes give only weak support to its tenuous classification as a dystrophic lake on the basis of water colour and sediment carbon values. The concept of dystrophy is discussed.  相似文献

From 1973 to 1976, 2430 blue cod (Parapercis colias) were tagged in the Marlborough Sounds. Tags from 84 fish (3.5%) were returned, after a mean 138 days at liberty. Of these, 71.6% had not moved significant distances. The remainder had travelled up to 41.7 km. Tag shedding rates, as indicated by multiple‐tagging experiments, were high. Results suggest that blue cod of the Marlborough Sounds and the adjacent islands belong to the same stock, and that, while some move significant distances, the majority stay in 1 place for extended periods.  相似文献

Xantharus Andronov, 1981 is reported, for the first time from New Zealand, from the upper slope (306 m) off the southeastern coast of North Island (41°04.10′S, 176°22.05′E). Xantharus cryeri n. sp. females differ from the three known species by a combination of characters: antennules that extend to the distal border of pedigerous somite 2; ancestral segment XVIII of the antennule with 1 seta; mandible basis with 3 setae; maxilla endite 1 with 5 setae; leg 1 basis with inner distal border lined with small spinules; and leg 5 is squat, with all segments as long as wide and the 2 terminal spine‐like extensions of the terminal segment approximately as long as the articulated, inner, subterminal spine.  相似文献

Quantitative data are presented on the distribution of adult and larval stages of the euphausiid Nyctiphanes australis G. O. Sars, in western Cook Strait, New Zealand, an area influenced by an upwelling plume. The behaviour of N. australis in the Kahurangi Point region at different stages of its life history appears to ensure its maintenance, in general, over the continental shelf on an upwelling coast. Population structure at the source of the upwelling near Kahurangi Point differed from that in regions “down stream” from the plume. Nyctiphanes australis was most abundant at the “downstream” eastern end of the upwelling plume, and the evidence suggesting that the dense populations there may be resident is discussed. Possible reasons for low densities of furcilia II and III stages in the eastern plume region are considered.  相似文献

Commercial tuna longline fishing targeting bigeye tuna, Thunnus obesus (Lowe 1839), on the Three Kings Rise, northern New Zealand, resulted in the bycatch of a single specimen of a mature male crocodile shark, Pseudocarcharias kamoharai (Matsubara 1936). This is the first record for the New Zealand Exclusive Economic Zone, and a major southern range extension of the species in the Indo‐Pacific.  相似文献
