Groundwater resources in the semi-arid regions of southern India are under immense pressure due to large-scale groundwater abstraction vis-à-vis meager rainfall recharge. Therefore, understanding and evaluating the spatial distribution of groundwater is essential for viable utilization of the resource. Here, we assess groundwater potential at the watershed scale, in a semi-arid environment with crystalline aquifer system without a perennial surface water source using remote sensing, geophysical, and GIS-based integrated multi-parameter approach. GIS-based weighed overlay analysis is performed with input parameters, viz., geology, geomorphology, lineament density, land use, soil, drainage density, slope, and aquifer thickness. The watershed is categorized into four zones, namely, “very good” (GWP4), “good” (GWP3), “moderate” (GWP2), and “low” (GWP1) in terms of groundwater potential. Overall, ~?70% of the study area falls under moderate to low groundwater potential, indicating a serious threat to the future availability of the resource. Therefore, serious measures are required for maintaining aquifer resilience in this over-exploited aquifer (e.g., restricting groundwater withdrawal from GWP1 and GWP2 zones). Further, as the aquifer is under tremendous anthropogenic pressure, rainwater harvesting and artificial recharge during monsoon are advocated for sustainable aquifer management. Due to the direct dependence of crop production vis-à-vis farmer economy on groundwater, this study is an important step towards sustainable groundwater management and can be applied in diverse hydrological terrains.

Integrated geoelectrical resistivity, hydrochemical and soil property analysis methods were used to study the groundwater
characteristics of sandy soils within a shallow aquifer in the agriculture area, Machang. A pilot test investigation was done
prior to the main investigation. The area was divided into two sites. Test-Site 1 is non-fertilized; Test-Site 2 is the former
regularly fertilized site. From the surface to depths of 75 cm, a lower average resistivity was obtained in Test-Site 2 (around
0.37 less than in Test-Site 1). The presence of nitrate and chloride contents in pore water reduced the resistivity values
despite the low moisture content. The pH values for the whole area range from 4.11 to 6.88, indicating that the groundwater
is moderately to slightly acidic. In the southern region, concentration of nitrate is considered to be high (>20 mg/l), while
it is nearly zero in the northern region. In the south, the soil properties are similar. However, the geoelectrical model
shows lower resistivity values (around 18 Ω m) at the sites with relatively high nitrate concentration in the groundwater
(>20 mg/l). Conversely, the sites with low nitrate concentration reveal the resistivity values to be higher (>35 Ω m). Basement
and groundwater potential maps are generated from the interpolation of an interpreted resistivity model. The areas that possibly
have nitrate-contaminated groundwater have been mapped along with groundwater flow patterns. The northern part of the area
has an east to west groundwater flow pattern, making it impossible for contaminated water from the southern region to enter,
despite the northern area having a lower elevation.

The Quaternary aquifer of Wadi Ham, UAE has been overexploited during the last two decades to meet the increasing water demands.
As a result, the dynamic balance between freshwater and seawater has been disturbed and the quality of the groundwater has
deteriorated. In this paper, a 2D earth resistivity survey was conducted in Wadi Ham in the area between Fujairah and Kalba
to delineate the seawater intrusion. Existing monitoring wells were used to measure the horizontal and vertical variations
in water salinity and thus to improve the interpretation of earth resistivity imaging data. Results of vertical electrical
soundings and chemical analyses of collected water samples were used to obtain an empirical relationship between the inferred
earth resistivity and the amount of total dissolved solids. This relationship was used along with the true resistivity sections
resulting from the inversion of 2D resistivity data to identify three zones of water-bearing formation (fresh, brackish, and
salt-water zones). Along the four 2D resistivity profiles, the depth to the fresh-brackish interface exceeded 50 m at the
western part of the area and was in the order of 10 m or less in the eastern side near the shoreline. Depth to the brackish-saline
water interface reached about 70 m in the western side and was in the order of 20 m in the eastern side. The thickness of
the fresh water zone decreases considerably in the farming areas toward Kalba and thus the degree of seawater intrusion increases.

Hydrochemical, multivariate statistical and inverse hydrogeochemical modeling techniques were used to investigate groundwater
recharge, flow and the hydrochemical evolution within the Akaki volcanic aquifer system, central Ethiopia. The hydrochemical
and multivariate statistical techniques are mutually supportive and the extracted information was analyzed together with environmental
isotope data. Results reveal five spatial groundwater zones with defined hydrochemical facies, residence times, stable isotopic
signals and hydrochemical evolution. These zones are designated as the (1) Intoto, (2) central, (3) Filwuha fault, (4) south
zones and (5) a highly polluted sub-sector identified within the central zone. Both the hydrochemical and multivariate statistical
analyses have shown the central sub-sector as being spite of differentially polluted by , Cl− and and its tritium content shows recent recharge. Due to the fact that the main recharge source is precipitation, the hydrochemical
and environmental isotope data clearly indicated that the central and southern sectors are also recharged from domestic waste
water and leakage from water mains and reservoirs. Inverse hydrogeochemical modeling demonstrated reactions of silicate minerals
in a CO2 open system and precipitation of kaolinite, chalcedony, and rare calcite satisfy the observed change in water chemistry from
north to south following the regional flow direction.

Sorption is an important process in the modelling and prediction of the movement of heavy metals in unsaturated clay barriers. This experimental study investigates the effect of pH changes in the acidic range on the sorption characteristics of heavy metals such as: lead, copper and zinc in an unsaturated soil. A series of one-dimensional coupled solute and moisture leaching column tests, using different heavy metal solutions, were conducted on an unsaturated illitic soil at varying pH values. Variations of volumetric water content (VWC) with distance were measured for different time durations, and concentrations of heavy metals in the liquid and solid phases were analysed. Partitioning coefficient profiles of contaminants along the soil column were determined for each individual layer in the soil.
Results from column leaching tests showed that the sorption characteristics of heavy metals are controlled by many factors which should be taken into consideration, i.e. the VWC, time of wetting, soil pH, and the influent heavy metal concentrations. Simplification of Kd as a constant and of the VWC as a linear function cannot be considered a good assumption and may lead to an improper evaluation of the sorption phenomena and also to serious errors in predicting contaminant transport through unsaturated soils.

Assessing aquifer vulnerability to pollutants by electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) at a nitrate vulnerable zone in NE Spain
There is an increasing demand for groundwater vulnerability maps which illustrate the exposure of aquifers against pollution.
These maps show areas of greatest potential for groundwater contamination on the basis of local subsurface conditions. Parameters
affecting vulnerability are mainly permeability and thickness of each protective layer. For unconsolidated sediments, the
permeability is strongly related to the clay content, which can be deduced from indirect resistivity methods, like electrical-imaging.
Such geophysical methods can be of great help in groundwater vulnerability studies because they disturb neither the structure
nor the dynamics of the soil. Sensibility analysis was performed of the electrical resistivity tomography method for accurately
mapping soil media. Managers and public administrators may effectively use this method for assessing the potential risk of
groundwater contamination. In the studied zone, electrical resistivity exhibits a wide range of variability that can be easily
correlated to soil parameters, such as clay content and hydraulic conductivity. A numerical index of protection has been assessed
from the geophysical information derived from 2D electrical resistivity tomography. This work represents a preliminary approach
on the natural vulnerability evaluation of shallow aquifers at the Empordà basin (NE Spain) that is highly affected by diffuse
pollution by nitrates.

Bwari is one of the six municipal area councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja with its attendant growing population and infrastructural developments. Groundwater is the main source of water supply in the area, and urbanization and industrialization are the predominant contributors of contaminants to the hydrological systems. In order to guarantee a continuous supply of potable water, there is a need to investigate the vulnerability of the aquifers to contaminants emanating from domestic and industrial wastes. A total of 20 vertical electrical soundings using Schlumberger electrode array with a maximum half current electrodes separation of 300 m was employed. The results show that the area is characterized by 3–6 geoelectric subsurface layers. The measured overburden thickness ranges from 1.0 to 24.3 m, with a mean value of 7.4 m. The resistivity and longitudinal conductance of the overburden units range from 18 to 11,908 Ωm and 0.047 to 0.875 mhos, respectively. Areas considered as high corrosivity are the central parts with ρ < 180 Ωm. The characteristic longitudinal unit conductance was used to classify the area into zones of good (0.7–4.49 mhos), moderate (0.2–0.69 mhos), weak (0.1–0.19 mhos), and poor (<0.1) aquifer protective capacity. Zones characterized by materials of moderate to good protective capacity serve as sealing potential for the underlying hydrogeological system in the area. This study is aimed at delineating zones that are very prone to groundwater contamination from surface contaminants and subsurface soils that are corrosive to utility pipes buried underground. Hence the findings of this work will constitute part of the tools for groundwater development and management and structural/infrastructural development planning of the area.

The work investigates the major solute chemistry of groundwater and fluoride enrichment(F~-) in the shallow phreatic aquifer of Odisha. The study also interprets the hydrogeochemical processes of solute acquisition and the genetic behavior of groundwater F~-contamination.A total of 1105 groundwater samples collected from across the state from different hydro-geomorphic settings have been analyzed for the major solutes and F~-content.Groundwater is alkaline in nature(range of pH: 6.6–8.7; ave.: 7.9) predominated by moderately hard to very hard types.Average cation and anion chemistry stand in the orders of Ca~(2+) Na~+ Mg~(2+) K~+and HCO_3~- Cl~- SO_4~(2-) CO_3~(2-)respectively.The average mineralization is low(319 mg/L).The primary water types are Ca-Mg-HCO_3 and Ca-Mg-Cl~-HCO_3, followed by Na-Cl, Ca-Mg-Cl, and Na-Ca-Mg-HCO_3~-Cl.Silicate-halite dissolution and reverse ion exchange are the significant processes of solute acquisition. Both the geogenic as well as the anthropogenic sources contribute to the groundwater fluoride contamination, etc. The ratio of Na~+/Ca~(2+) 1.0 comprises Na-HCO_3(Cl) water types with F~- 1.0 mg/L(range 1.0–3.5 mg/L)where the F~-bears geogenic source.Positive relations exist between F~-and pH, Na~+, TDS, and HCO_3~-.It also reflects a perfect Na-TDS correlation(0.85).The ratio of Na~+/Ca~(2+) 1.0 segregates the sample population(F~- range: 1.0–4.0 mg/L) with the F derived from anthropogenic sources.Such water types include Ca-Mg-HCO_3(Cl) varieties which are recently recharged meteoritic water types. The F~-levels exhibit poor and negative correlations with the solutes in groundwater. The Na-TDS relation remains poor(0.12).In contrast, the TDS levels show strong correlations with Ca~(2+)(0.91), Mg~(2+)(0.80) and even Cl~-(0.91).The majority of the monitoring points with the anthropogenic sources of groundwater F~-are clustered in the Hirakud Canal Command area in the western parts of the state, indicating the role of irrigation return flow in the F~-contamination.

Salinity mapping of coastal groundwater aquifers using hydrogeochemical and geophysical methods: a case study from north Kelantan,Malaysia
Integrated hydrogeochemical and geophysical methods were used to study the salinity of groundwater aquifers along the coastal
area of north Kelantan. For the hydrogeochemical investigation, analysis of major ion contents of the groundwater was conducted,
and other chemical parameters such as pH and total dissolved solids were also determined. For the geophysical study, both
geoelectrical resistivity soundings and reflection seismic surveys were conducted to determine the characteristics of the
subsurface and groundwater contained within the aquifers. The pH values range from 6.2 to 6.8, indicating that the groundwater
in the study area is slightly acidic. Low content of chloride suggests that the groundwater in the first aquifer is fresh,
with an average concentration of about 15.8 mg/l and high geoelectrical resistivity (>45 ohm m). On the other hand, the groundwater
in the second aquifer is brackish, with chloride concentration ranging from 500 mg/l to 3,600 mg/l and very low geoelectrical
resistivity (<45 ohm m) as well as high concentration of total dissolved solids (>1,000 mg/l). The groundwater in the third
aquifer is fresh, with chloride concentrations generally ranging from 2 mg/l to 210 mg/l and geoelectrical resistivity of
greater than 45 ohm m. Fresh and saltwater interface in the first aquifer is generally located directly in the area of the
coast, but, for the second aquifer, both hydrogeochemical and geoelectrical resistivity results indicate that the fresh water
and saltwater interface is located as far as 6 km from the beach. The considerable chloride ion content initially suggests
that the salinity of the groundwater in the second aquifer is probably caused by the intrusion of seawater. However, continuous
monitoring of the chloride content of the second aquifer indicated no significant changes with time, from which it can be
inferred that the salinity of the groundwater is not affected by seasonal seawater intrusion. Schoeller diagrams illustrate
that sulphate concentrations of the groundwater of the second aquifer are relatively low compared to those of the recent seawater.
Therefore, this result suggests that the brackish water in the second aquifer is probably from ancient seawater that was trapped
within the sediments for a long period of time, rather than due to direct seawater intrusion.

This paper presents the results of a comparative study relating to the application of four vulnerability mapping methods,
GOD, AVI, DRASTIC and SINTACS, in a pilot detritic aquifer situated in NW Morocco, known as the Martil–Alila aquifer. The
principal objective of this work is to determine the most suitable such methods for this aquifer type within a Mediterranean
context, and to show the effect of the rainfall variations that are characteristic of the Mediterranean climate on the degree
of vulnerability. The methods applied distinguish five classes of vulnerability, these being irregularly divided up in space,
with the division varying according to the method in question. The vulnerability maps obtained by the different methods strongly
suggest that the eastern half of the aquifer is more vulnerable to contamination than the western half, for all hydrological
situations. The effect of climatic conditions on the degree of vulnerability is well represented by the DRASTIC, according
to which the aquifer is moderately to strongly vulnerable during humid hydrological years and weakly to moderately vulnerable
during dry ones. For the other methods, this climatic effect is limited to the area occupied by the two predominant classes
(“High” and “Low” for GOD and “High” and “Moderate” for SINTACS) while it is null for AVI. In conclusion, DRASTIC appears
the most suitable for mapping the vulnerability to contamination of Mediterranean coastal detritic aquifers such as the Martil–Alila
aquifer.

Potential pathways in the subsurface may allow upwardly migrating gaseous CO2 from deep geological storage formations to be released into near surface aquifers. Consequently, the availability of adequate methods for monitoring potential CO2 releases in both deep geological formations and the shallow subsurface is a prerequisite for the deployment of Carbon Capture and Storage technology. Geoelectrical surveys are carried out for monitoring a small-scale and temporally limited CO2 injection experiment in a pristine shallow aquifer system. Additionally, the feasibility of multiphase modeling was tested in order to describe both complex non-linear multiphase flow processes and the electrical behavior of partially saturated heterogeneous porous media. The suitability of geoelectrical methods for monitoring injected CO2 and geochemically altered groundwater was proven. At the test site, geoelectrical measurements reveal significant variations in electrical conductivity in the order of 15?C30?%. However, site-specific conditions (e.g., geological settings, groundwater composition) significantly influence variations in subsurface electrical conductivity and consequently, the feasibility of geoelectrical monitoring. The monitoring results provided initial information concerning gaseous CO2 migration and accumulation processes. Geoelectrical monitoring, in combination with multiphase modeling, was identified as a useful tool for understanding gas phase migration and mass transfer processes that occur due to CO2 intrusions in shallow aquifer systems.

A thirty-year artificial recharge experiment in a coastal aquifer in an arid zone: The Teboulba aquifer system (Tunisian Sahel)
With the increased demand for groundwater resulting from fast demographic growth, accelerated urbanization, economic and agricultural activity diversification, and the increase of per capita consumption, ground water resources, in particular in coastal regions, remain relatively low, compared to demand. The groundwater quality and piezometric variations result mainly from intensive exploitation, agricultural activities and the intrusion of seawater. This phenomenon is observed mostly in semi-arid areas, such as the oriental Sahel of Tunisia, where an apparent reduction in rainfall in recent years can be seen. Groundwater becomes overexploited especially as its natural recharge by rainwater does not succeed in maintaining the hydrologic balance. The imbalance between water demand and resources induces the degradation of the water quality. In such a case, the artificial recharge of water-table aquifers by water from dams is a credible alternative to improve the hydrodynamic and physicochemical conditions of the groundwater. Like most coastal aquifers, the Teboulba water-table aquifer is threatened by overexploitation for at least three decades. This threat appears by a considerable piezometric level drop and by water salinisation, due to seawater intrusion. Given this alarming situation, since 1971, artificial recharge through wells with surface water from a dam was tested in order to restore the water levels and to improve water quality. The piezometric and chemical surveys of the Teboulba aquifer permitted one to describe the temporal and spatial piezometric and geochemical conditions of the aquifer and to show the effect of the artificial recharge. Indeed, the artificial recharge undertaken since 1971 made the geochemical and piezometric conditions of the Teboulba aquifer improve. This example is a rare, well-documented case-study of the benefits of artificial recharge in a coastal aquifer, over the long term.
