The Magellanic Clouds, especially the Large Magellanic Cloud, are places where multiple distance indicators can be compared with each other in a straight-forward manner at considerable precision. We here review the distances derived from Cepheids, Red Variables, RR Lyraes, Red Clump Stars and Eclipsing Binaries, and show that the results from these distance indicators generally agree to within their errors, and the distance modulus to the Large Magellanic Cloud appears to be defined to ±3% with a mean value (mM)0=18.48 mag, corresponding to 49.7 kpc. The utility of the Magellanic Clouds in constructing and testing the distance scale will remain as we move into the era of Gaia.  相似文献

Analysis of the radial-velocity and light curves of detached eclipsing binaries allows to derive stellar masses and radii and, in consequence, enables to find their distances. This method has been already applied to several LMC binaries, but in order to have the distance to the LMC determined with good accuracy, the study needs to be extended to a larger number of eclipsing systems. As a first step, we present results of the analysis of the photometry of over 80 detached binaries in the LMC selected from the OGLE-II catalog of 53,000 candidates for variables. If possible, we combine the OGLE-II data with the photometry from other projects (MACHO and EROS). As a result, we present the list of the brightest eclipsing binaries in the LMC suitable for distance determination.  相似文献

A sample of 1497 carbon stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) has been observed in the red part of the spectrum with the 2dF facility on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. Of these, 156 have been identified as J-type (i.e. 13C-rich) carbon stars using a technique which provides a clear distinction between J stars and the normal N-type carbon stars that comprise the bulk of the sample, and yields few borderline cases. A simple two-dimensional classification of the spectra, based on their spectral slopes in different wavelength regions, has been constructed and found to be related to the more conventional c and j indices, modified to suit the spectral regions observed. Most of the J stars form a photometric sequence in the   K − ( J − K )  colour–magnitude diagram, parallel to and 0.6 mag fainter than the N-star sequence. A subset of the J stars (about 13 per cent) are brighter than this J-star sequence; most of these are spectroscopically different from the other J stars. The bright J stars have stronger CN bands than the other J stars and are found strongly concentrated in the central regions of the LMC. Most of the rather few stars in common with Hartwick and Cowley's sample of suspected CH stars are J stars. Overall, the proportion of carbon stars identified as J stars is somewhat lower than has been found in the Galaxy. The Na D lines are weaker in the LMC J stars than in either the Galactic J stars or the LMC N stars, and do not seem to depend on temperature.  相似文献

Light-echo measurements show that SN 1987A is 425 pc behind the LMC disk. It is continuing to move away from the disk at 18 km s-1. Thus, it has been suggested that SN 1987A was ejected from the LMC disk. However, SN 1987A is a member of a star cluster, so this entire cluster would have to have been ejected from the disk. We show that the cluster was formed in the LMC disk, with a velocity perpendicular to the disk of about 50 km s-1. Such high-velocity formation of a star cluster is unusual, having no known counterpart in the Milky Way.  相似文献

We present a catalogue with coordinates and photometric data of 2446 Be star candidates in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), based on a search of the OGLE II data base. The I -band light curves of these stars show outbursts in 24 per cent of the sample (Type-1 stars), high and low states in 10 per cent, periodic variations in 6 per cent (Type-3 stars), and stochastic variations in 60 per cent of the cases. We report on the result of the statistical study of light curves of Type-1 and Type-3 stars in the LMC, and the comparison with the previously reported results of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) sample. We find a statistically significant difference between amplitude, duration and asymmetry distributions of outbursts in both galaxies. Outbursts of SMC Type-1 stars are usually brighter, longer and with a slower decline. We find a bimodal distribution of periods of Type-3 stars in both galaxies, probably related to the recently discovered double periodic blue variables. We find also period and amplitude distributions of Type-3 LMC stars statistically different from those of the SMC stars. Our findings above suggest that the mechanisms causing the observed photometric variability of Type-1 and Type-3 stars could depend on metallicity. Moreover, they suggest that the outbursts are not primarily caused by stellar winds.  相似文献

We present a detailed analysis of the uncertainty on the theoretical population corrections to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) red clump (RC) absolute magnitude, by employing a population synthesis algorithm to simulate theoretically the photometric and spectroscopic properties of RC stars, under various assumptions concerning the LMC star formation rate (SFR) and age–metallicity relationship (AMR). A comparison of the outcome of our simulations with observations of evolved low- to intermediate-mass stars in the LMC allows one to select the combinations of SFR and AMR that bracket the real LMC star formation history, and to estimate the systematic error on the associated RC population corrections.
The most accurate estimate of the LMC distance modulus from the RC method (adopting the OGLE-II reddening maps for the LMC) is obtained from the K -band magnitude, and provides  ( m − M )0,LMC= 18.47 ± 0.01(random)+0.05−0.06(systematic)  . Distances obtained from the I band, or from the multicolour RC technique which determines at the same time reddening and distance, both agree (albeit with a slightly larger error bar) with this value.  相似文献

Multi-scale interaction between the LMC, the Galactic halo, and the disk is examined with N-body simulations, and precise amplitudes of the Galactic warp excitation are obtained. The Galactic models are constructed most realistically to satisfy available observational constraints on the local circular velocity, the mass, surface density and thickness of the disk, the mass and size of the bulge, the local density of the halo matter at the solar radius, and the mass and orbit of the LMC. The mass of the halo within R=50 kpc is set to about 5×1011 M. Since the observational estimate of the mass distributed in outer region has large ambiguity, two extreme cases are examined; M(<170 kpc)=2.1 and 0.9×1012 M. LMC is orbiting in a ellipse with apocentric radii of 100 kpc, thus the main difference between our two models is the mass density in the satellite orbiting region, so that our study can clarify the role of the halo on excitation of the warp.By using hybrid algorithm (SCF–TREE) I have succeeded to follow the evolution with millions of particles. The orbiting satellite excites density enhancement as a wake, and the wake exerts a tidal force on the disk. Because of the additional torque from the wakes in the halo, the amplitudes of the induced warps are much larger than the classical estimate by Hunter and Toomre [ApJ 155 (1969) 747], who considered only the direct torque from the LMC. The obtained amplitudes of m=0, 1, 2 warps in the larger halo model show very good agreement with the observed amplitude in the Milky Way. This result revives the LMC as a possible candidate of the origin of the Galactic warp. Our smaller halo model, however, yield only weak warps in all the harmonic modes. Therefore, the halo still has significant influence on excitation of warp even in the interaction scenario for excitation of warps.  相似文献

Linear correlations between the diameter log of ring-shaped nebulae and the total number logN of embedded stars for two absolute magnitude levels of –2m and +2m for the LMC have been found. This shows that less luminous stars are also contributing towards the illumination of the nebulae. A method for the determination of relative ages of these loop nebulae is described.Based on observations collected at the Boyden Observatory, Bloemfontein, South Africa and the European Southern Observatory, La Silla, Chile.  相似文献

This paper presents new observations of 97 planetary nebulae in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) obtained using the FLAIR system on the UK 1.2-m Schmidt Telescope. These nebulae are mostly at the fainter end of the known population, and about 75 per cent have not been observed before in spectroscopic mode. Radial velocities have been measured using cross-correlation techniques, and represent an increase of 66 per cent in the sample of LMC planetary nebulae with known radial velocities. The major line ratios are given, and are analysed in conjunction with published data. One-quarter of the faint nebulae are Type I objects with very strong [N II ] and [S II ] lines; most of the other faint nebulae have low density, low excitation and relatively strong [S II ] lines.  相似文献
