The question of whether or not the Earth's climate is influenced by solar activity has received considerable attention since the mid-nineteenth century. Most investigations have adopted the sunspot number as the parameter of solar activity. Recently, however, it has been shown by Friis-Christensen and Lassen (1991) that the mean northern hemisphere temperature, from 1861–1990, follows a strikingly similar trend to thelength of the sunspot cycle, suggesting that the recent global warming could, at least in part, arise from changes in solar activity. In view of the importance of this result, we have examined a set of continuous meteorological records, maintained at Armagh Observatory since 1844, to assess, first, whether data from a single site can give meaningful information on global trends, and second, whether the data from this particular site for the period 1844–1866 can be used to extend the baseline of the comparison with solar activity. We find that both are indeed the case and that there is a strong correlation between the solar cycle length and the mean temperature at Armagh over the past 149 years.  相似文献

The measurements of sunspot positions and areas that were published initially by the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, and subsequently by the Royal Greenwich Observatory (RGO), as the Greenwich Photo-heliographic Results (GPR), 1874?–?1976, exist in both printed and digital forms. These printed and digital sunspot datasets have been archived in various libraries and data centres. Unfortunately, however, typographic, systematic and isolated errors can be found in the various datasets. The purpose of the present paper is to begin the task of identifying and correcting these errors. In particular, the intention is to provide in one foundational paper all the necessary background information on the original solar observations, their various applications in scientific research, the format of the different digital datasets, the necessary definitions of the quantities measured, and the initial identification of errors in both the printed publications and the digital datasets. Two companion papers address the question of specific identifiable errors; namely, typographic errors in the printed publications, and both isolated and systematic errors in the digital datasets. The existence of two independently prepared digital datasets, which both contain information on sunspot positions and areas, makes it possible to outline a preliminary strategy for the development of an even more accurate digital dataset. Further work is in progress to generate an extremely reliable sunspot digital dataset, based on the programme of solar observations supported for more than a century by the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, and the Royal Greenwich Observatory. This improved dataset should be of value in many future scientific investigations.  相似文献

A broadband solar radio spectrometer with a bandwidth of about 7 GHz has been developed in China for solar maximum 23. This work is a cooperative project of Beijing Astronomical Observatory (BAO), Purple Mountain Observatory (PMO), Yunnan Observatory (YNO), and Nanjing University. The spectrometer of PMO worked in the waveband of 4.5–7.5 GHz, that of BAO in 1–2 GHz, 2.6–3.8 GHz, and 5.2–7.6 GHz, and that of YNO in 0.7–1.5 GHz. The spectrometer of PMO is a multichannel and frequency-agile one with a time resolution of 1–5 ms and a frequency resolution of 10 MHz. It started to operate in August 1999 and since then more than 300 spectral events have been observed, and some type III or type III-like structures have also been found. In this paper, some selected typical events, for example, the events on 25 August 1999 and 27 October 1999, are presented, and some new observed features are also described and discussed.  相似文献

Observations of solar radio emission at 3 cm wavelength have been made at Japal-Rangapur Observatory for 1980–1981, the solar maximum year using the 3 m radio telescope. The correlation between microwave solar emissions and the sunspot activity on monthly basis has been found to be high during the maximum phase and in the high cm wavelength band. The basic component has been estimated statistically for successive solar rotations using the data obtained at Japal-Rangapur Observatory. Further, this was compared with the data obtained at other cm wavelengths during 1980–1981 and the solar minimum period 1975–1976 of the 21st cycle. The comparison showed pronounced dips in flux levels at different wavelengths during the summer months of the solar maximum year which may be attributed to the presence of coronal holes in the various levels of the solar atmosphere. The computed basic component values showed pronounced variation at high cm wavelengths for the solar maximum period with dissimilar variations at different wavelengths. During the solar minimum period the variations were negligibly small and showed more or less constant level of activity.Paper presented at the IAU Third Asian-Pacific Regional Meeting, held in Kyoto, Japan, between 30 September–6 October, 1984.  相似文献

It is well established that both total and spectral solar irradiance are modulated by variable magnetic activity on the solar surface. However, there is still disagreement about the contribution of individual solar features for changes in the solar output, in particular over decadal time scales. Ionized Ca ii K line spectroheliograms are one of the major resources for these long-term trend studies, mainly because such measurements have been available now for more than 100 years. In this paper we introduce a new Ca ii K plage and active network index time series derived from the digitization of almost 40 000 photographic solar images that were obtained at the 60-foot solar tower, between 1915 and 1985, as a part of the monitoring program of the Mount Wilson Observatory. We describe here the procedure we applied to calibrate the images and the properties of our new defined index, which is strongly correlated to the average fractional area of the visible solar disk occupied by plages and active network. We show that the long-term variation of this index is in an excellent agreement with the 11-year solar-cycle trend determined from the annual international sunspot numbers series. Our time series agrees also very well with similar indicators derived from a different reduction of the same data base and other Ca ii K spectroheliograms long-term synoptic programs, such as those at Kodaikanal Observatory (India), and at the National Solar Observatory at Sacramento Peak (USA). Finally, we show that using appropriate proxies it is possible to extend this time series up to date, making this data set one of the longest Ca ii K index series currently available.  相似文献

The Taiwan Oscillation Network (TON) is a ground-based network to measure solar intensity oscillations to study the internal structure of the Sun. K-line full-disk images of 1000 pixels diameter are taken at a rate of one image per minute. Such data would provide information onp-modes withl as high as 1000. The TON will consist of six identical telescope systems at proper longitudes around the world. Three telescope systems have been installed at Teide Observatory (Tenerife), Huairou Solar Observing Station (near Beijing), and Big Bear Solar Observatory (California). The telescopes at these three sites have been taking data simultaneously since October of 1994. Anl – v diagram derived from 512 images is included to show the quality of the data.  相似文献

The eleven-year sunspot cycles are considered to represent one of the solar activities. The daily observations of the sunspots in the KAAU Solar Observatory (KAAUSO) have been utilised to reduce a period of the present solar cycle, using Fourier technique. The highest peak in the amplitude spectrum was for a frequency of 0.00029 day–1, for which the maximum occurred mid 1990.  相似文献

The plasma conditions in the solar atmosphere and, in particular, in coronal holes are summarized, before space-borne instrumentation for observing these regions in vacuum-ultraviolet light is briefly introduced with the Solar Ultraviolet Measurements of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) spectrometer on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) as example. Spectroscopic measurements of small plasma jets are then analyzed in detail. Magnetic reconnection is thought to be responsible for heating the corona of the Sun as well as accelerating the solar wind by converting magnetic energy into thermal and kinetic energies. The continuous outflow of the fast solar wind from coronal holes on ‘open’ field lines, which reach out into interplanetary space, then requires many reconnection events of very small scale sizes – most of them probably below the resolution capabilities of present-day instruments. Our observations of such an event have been obtained with the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) providing both high-resolution imaging and spectral information for structural and dynamical studies. We find whirling or rotating motions as well as jets with acceleration along their propagation paths in close spatial and temporal vicinity to the coronal jet. A new sunspot and faculae digital dataset for the interval 1874?–?1955 has been prepared under the auspices of the NOAA National Geophysical Data Center (NGDC). This digital dataset contains measurements of the positions and areas of both sunspots and faculae published initially by the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, and subsequently by the Royal Greenwich Observatory (RGO), under the title Greenwich Photo-heliographic Results (GPR), 1874?–?1976. Quality control (QC) procedures based on logical consistency have been used to identify the more obvious errors in the RGO publications. Typical examples of identifiable errors are North versus South errors in specifying heliographic latitude, errors in specifying heliographic (Carrington) longitude, errors in the dates and times, errors in sunspot group numbers, arithmetic errors in the summation process, and the occasional omission of solar ephemerides. Although the number of errors in the RGO publications is remarkably small, an initial table of necessary corrections is provided for the interval 1874?–?1917. Moreover, as noted in the preceding companion papers, the existence of two independently prepared digital datasets, which both contain information on sunspot positions and areas, makes it possible to outline a preliminary strategy for the development of an even more accurate digital dataset. Further work is in progress to generate an extremely reliable sunspot digital dataset, based on the long programme of solar observations supported first by the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, and then by the Royal Greenwich Observatory.  相似文献

The new TeePee Tee array of the Clark Lake Radio Observatory has been used to observe the quiet Sun at 121.5, 73.8 and 26.3 MHz. The equatorial brightness distributions at all three frequencies, and the polar brightness distributions at the two higher ones have been measured. From the observed total fluxes and half-power diameters we have derived the peak brightness temperatures of the solar disk as well as of some sources of the slowly varying component.On leave of absence from Instituto Argentino de Radioastronomía, Argentina.  相似文献

Several improvements have been made to the Mount Wilson Observatory solar magnetograph, including changes to the guider, the Doppler compensator, and the data-handling system. The improved magnetograph has been used for a new type of solar observation consisting of several hundred scans back and forth along a straight line of length 3/4 R 0 perpendicular to central meridian. The data reduction, which is done entirely with a computer, eliminates those effects which have their origin in the earth-sun geometry. The spatial and temporal properties of the 5-min oscillations are discussed.  相似文献

We describe a method of solar bidimensional spectroscopy exploiting the performances of a Universal Birefringent Filter (UBF) like that of the Sacramento Peak Observatory, which enable an estimate of the profile of some chromospheric lines with moderate spectral resolution ( \((\lambda /\Delta \lambda = 2.5 x 10^4 )\) ). The numerical inversion technique of Backus and Gilbert has been used to retrieve the estimated line profiles; the capabilities of the proposed method is fully analyzed with some numerical tests and examples. Correction procedures for errors in the positions of the UBF passband, random fluctuations of the exposure times and non-uniform brightness distribution on the filtergrams are also presented. The whole method has been tested on the recovery of quiet atmosphere line profiles and the results derived for the Na D2 line show that the proposed method is completely suitable for many investigations in solar physics.  相似文献

Periodicities of 22, 8 and 6 years have been found by a statistical analysis of the coefficient of atmospheric activity R of Jupiter for the time period 1910–1985.We have also found variations of the coefficient of asymmetry of the activity Z measured by the Observatory of Athens for the time period 1956–1985 with periodicities of 12, 8, 6 and 4 years by statistical analysis.The same periodicities have been recently found in an analysis of the total number of solar flares and in the number of high velocity solar wind streamers.  相似文献

This paper reviews the most important components of the national project of the Ukrainian Virtual Observatory (UkrVO). Among them, there is the establishment of a Joint Digital Archive (JDA) of observational data, which has been obtained at Ukrainian observatories since the 1890s, including an astronegative JDA (more than 200 thousand plates). Since this task requires VO-oriented software, such issues as content verification software, integrity and administration of the JDA, compliance of image formats with the IVOA standards, and photometric and astrometric calibration of images are considered as the most important directions of software development, which carried out by members of the UkrVO. The scientific projects using local data archives of the UkrVO are discussed, namely: an analysis of a long observational series of active galactic nuclei, the study of solar flares and solar active regions based on spectral observational archives, research and discovery of variable stars, and the study of stellar fields in the vicinity of gamma-ray bursts. Particular attention is devoted to the CoLiTec Program that permits us to increase a number of observed solar system bodies and allows us to discover new bodies; for example, the C/2010 (Elenin) and P/2011 N01 comets were discovered using this program at the ISON-NM Observatory. The paper notes the creation of the UkrVO JDA prototype that provides access to the databases of the Main Astronomical Observatory, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (MAO NAS of Ukraine); Nikolaev Astronomical Observatory (NAO); and Lvov Astronomical Observatory.  相似文献

A brief summary is given of a program which is currently being carried out with the McMath telescope of the Kitt Peak National Observatory in order to study high-degree (l ≳ 150) solar p-mode oscillations. This program uses a 244 × 248 pixel CID camera and the main spectrograph of the McMath telescope to obtain velocity-time maps of the oscillations which can be converted into two-dimensional (k h - ω) power spectra of the oscillations. Several different regions of the solar spectrum have been used in order to study the oscillations at different elevations in the solar atmosphere. The program concentrates on eastward- and westward-propagating sectoral harmonic waves so that measurements can be made of the absolute rotational velocities of the solar photospheric and shallow sub-photospheric layers. Some preliminary results from this program are now available. First, we have been unable to confirm the existence of a radial gradient in the equatorial rotational velocity as was previously suggested. Second, we have indeed been able to confirm the presence of p-mode waves in the solar chromosphere as was first suggested by Rhodes et al. (1977). Third, we have been able to demonstrate differences in photospheric and chromospheric power spectra.
