Sunspots are solar features located in active regions of the Sun, whose number is an indicator of the Sun's magnetic activity. With a substantial increase in the quantity of solar image data, the automated detection and verification of various solar features have become increasingly important for the accurate and timely forecasts of solar activity and space weather. In order to use the high time-cadence SDO/HMI data to extract the main sunspot features for forecasting solar activities, we have established an automatic detection method of sunspots based on mathematical morphology, and calculated the sunspot group area and sunspot number. By comparing our results with those obtained from the Solar Region Summary compiled by NOAA/SWPC, it is found that the sunspot group areas and sunspot numbers computed with our algorithm are in good agreement with the active region values released by SWPC, and the corresponding correlation coefficients for the sunspot group area and sunspot number are 0.77 and 0.79, respectively. By using the method of this paper, the high time-cadence feature parameters can be obtained from the HMI data to provide the timely and accurate inputs for the solar activity forecast.  相似文献

We attempt to establish a correlation between the solar activity level and some characteristics of the latitude distribution of sunspots by means of center-of-latitude (COL) of observed sunspots. We calculate the COL by taking the area weighted mean latitude of sunspots for each calendar month during a cycle, and adopt the cycle-integrated sunspot area as a measure of the strength of a cycle. We first determine the latitudinal distribution of COL of sunspots. We then compute three different statistical correlations between the cycle-integrated sunspot areas and the fitting parameters of all sunspot cycles from 1878 to 2009. Our main findings are as follows: (1) The distribution of COL is bimodal well represented by a double Gaussian function. (2) Ignoring cycle 19, the characteristic width of the distribution of COL shows a significant correlation with the cycle amplitude. (3) A correlation between the location of the maxima of the COL distribution (either centroid1 or centroid2) and the sum of sunspot area can be found, when the data point corresponding to the solar cycle 19 is omitted.  相似文献

The first statistical results in sunspot distributions in 1996–2004 obtained from the Solar Feature Catalogues (SFC) are presented. A novel robust technique is developed for automated identification of sunspots on SOHO/MDI white-light (WL) full-disk solar images. The technique applies image standardization procedures for elimination of the limb darkening and non-circular image shape, uses edge-detection methods to find the sunspot candidates and their edges and morphological operations to smooth the features and fill in gaps. The detected sunspots are verified with the SOHO/MDI magnetograms by strong magnetic fields being present in sunspots. A number of physical and geometrical parameters of the detected sunspot features are extracted and stored in the relational SFC database including umbra/penumbra masks in the form of run-length data encoding of sunspot bounding rectangles. The detection results are verified by comparison with the manual daily detection results in Meudon and Locarno Observatories in 2002 and by correlation (about 96%) with the 4 year sunspot areas produced manually at NOAA. Using the SFC data, sunspot area distributions are presented in different phases of the solar cycle and hemispheres which reveals a periodicity of the north–south asymmetry with a period of about 7–8 years. The number of sunspots increases exponentially with the area decrease with the index slightly increasing from −1.15 (1997) to −1.34 (2001).  相似文献

During sunspot cycles 20 and 21, the maximum in smoothed 10.7-cm solar radio flux occurred about 1.5 yr after the maximum smoothed sunspot number, whereas during cycles 18 and 19 no lag was observed. Thus, although 10.7-cm radio flux and Zürich suspot number are highly correlated, they are not interchangeable, especially near solar maximum. The 10.7-cm flux more closely follows the number of sunspots visible on the solar disk, while the Zürich sunspot number more closely follows the number of sunspot groups. The number of sunspots in an active region is one measure of the complexity of the magnetic structure of the region, and the coincidence in the maxima of radio flux and number of sunspots apparently reflects higher radio emission from active regions of greater magnetic complexity. The presence of a lag between sunspot-number maximum and radio-flux maximum in some cycles but not in others argues that some aspect of the average magnetic complexity near solar maximum must vary from cycle to cycle. A speculative possibility is that the radio-flux lag discriminates between long-period and short-period cycles, being another indicator that the solar cycle switches between long-period and short-period modes.Operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. under contract with the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

Large sunspot areas correspond to dips in the total solar irradiance (TSI), a phenomenon associated with the local suppression of convective energy transport in the spot region. This results in a strong correlation between sunspot area and TSI. During the growth phase of a sunspot other physics may affect this correlation; if the physical growth of the sunspot resulted in surface flows affecting the temperature, for example, we might expect to see an anomalous variation in TSI. In this paper we study NOAA active region 8179, in which large sunspots suddenly appeared near disk center, at a time (March 1998) when few competing sunspots or plage regions were present on the visible hemisphere. We find that the area/TSI correlation does not significantly differ from the expected pattern of correlation, a result consistent with a large thermal conductivity in solar convection zone. In addition we have searched for a smaller-scale effect by analyzing white-light images from MDI (the Michelson Doppler Imager) on SOHO. A representative upper-limit energy consistent with the images is on the order of 3×1031 ergs, assuming the time scale of the actual spot area growth. This is of the same order of magnitude as the buoyant energy of the spot emergence even if it is shallow. We suggest that detailed image analyses of sunspot growth may therefore show `transient bright rings' at a detectable level.  相似文献

The statistics of extreme values is used to investigate the statistical properties of the largest areas of sunspots and photospheric faculae per solar cycle. The largest values of the synodic-solar-rotation mean areas of umbrae, whole spots and faculae, which have been recorded for nine solar cycles, are each shown to comply with the general form of the extreme value probability function. Empirical expressions are derived for the three extreme value populations from which the characteristic statistical parameters, namely the mode, median, mean and standard deviation, can be calculated for each population. These three extreme value populations are also used to find the expected ranges of the extreme areas in a group of solar cycles as a function of the number of cycles in the group. The extreme areas of umbrae and whole spots have a dispersion comparable to that found by Siscoe for the extreme values of sunspot number, whereas the extreme areas of faculae have a smaller dispersion which is comparable to that found by Siscoe for the largest geomagnetic storm per solar cycle. The expected range of the largest sunspot area per solar cycle for a group of one hundred cycles appears to be inconsistent with the existence of the prolonged periods of sunspot minima that have been inferred from the historical information on solar variability. This inconsistency supports the contention that there are temporal changes of solar-cycle statistics during protracted periods of sunspot minima (or maxima). Indeed, without such temporal changes, photospheric faculae should have been continually observable throughout the lifetime of the Sun.  相似文献

The characteristics of the basic framework of structure and development of solar active regions are interpreted as good indicators of the magnetohydrodynamical structure of the convection zone, the magnetic field lines of which are twisted and are made wave-like by the action of the very large scale non-axisymmetric convection, called here the global convection. The characteristics discussed in this paper are: (i) the preponderance of preceding spots of bipolar sunspot groups in strength and life time relative to the following spots of the groups, (ii) the tilt of bipolar axes of the sunspot groups to the local parallels of latitude, (iii) the forward inclination of normal axes of sunspots inferred from the east-west asymmetry of the appearance and total area of sunspots, (iv) the faster rotation of sunspots than the averaged fluid rotation, and (v) the association of the characteristics of an active region with the presence of an older active region in its vicinity and with the relative disposition of the two active regions.  相似文献

Sunspots are solar features located in active regions of the Sun, whose number is an indicator of the Sun’s magnetic activity. Therefore accurate detection and classification of sunspots are fundamental for the elaboration of solar activity indices such as the Wolf number. However, irregularities in the shape of the sunspots and their variable intensity and contrast with the surroundings, make their automated detection from digital images difficult. Here, we present a morphological tool that has allowed us to construct a simple and automatic procedure to treat digital photographs obtained from a solar telescope, and to extract the main features of sunspots. Comparing the solar indices computed with our algorithm against those obtained with the previous method exhibit an obvious improvement. A favorable comparison of the Wolf sunspot number time series obtained with our methodology and from other reference observatories is also presented. Finally, we compare our sunspot and group detection to that of other observatories.  相似文献

The rotation of sunspots in the solar active region NOAA 10930 was investigated on the basis of the data on the longitudinal magnetic field and the Doppler velocities using magnetograms and dopplergrams taken with the Solar Optical Telescope installed aboard the HINODE mission. Under the assumption of axial symmetry, areally-mean vertical, radial, and azimuthal components of the magnetic field and velocity vectors were calculated in both sunspots. The plasma in the sunspots rotated in opposite directions: in the leading sunspot, clockwise, and in the following sunspot, counterclockwise. The magnetic flux tubes that formed sunspots of the active region on the solar surface were twisted in one direction, clockwise. Electric currents generated as a result of the rotation and twisting of magnetic flux tubes were also flowing in one direction. Azimuthal components of magnetic and velocity fields of both sunspot umbrae reached their maximum on December 11, 2006. By the start of the X3.4 flare (December 13, 2006), their values became practically equal to zero.  相似文献

The areas of sunspots are the most prominent feature of the development of sunspot groups. Since the size of sunspot areas depend on the strength of the magnetic field, accurate measurements of these areas are important. In this study, a method which allows to measure true areas of the sunspots is introduced. A Stonyhurst disk is created by using a computer program and is coincided with solar images. By doing this, an accurate heliographic coordinate system is formed. Then, the true area of the whole sunspot group is calculated in square degrees with the aid of the heliographic coordinates of each picture element forming the image of the sunspot group. This technique’s use is not limited with sunspot areas only. The areas of the flare and filaments observed on the chromospheric disk can also be calculated with the same method. In addition to this, it is possible to calculate the area of any occurrence on the solar disk, whether it is related to an activity or not.  相似文献

In this paper we present the results of a sunspot rotation study using Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory photoheliogram data for 324 sunspots. The rotation amplitudes vary in theinebreak 2–64° range (with maximum at 12–14°), and the periods around 0–20 days (with maximum atinebreak 4–6 days). It could be concluded that sunspot rotations are rather inhomogeneous and asymmetric, but several types of sunspots are distinguished by their rotational parameters.During solar activity maximum, sunspot average rotation periods and amplitudes slightly increase. This can be affected by the increase of sunspot magnetic flux tube depth. So we can suppose that sunspot formation during solar activity is connected to a rise of magnetic tubes from deeper layers of the solar photosphere, strengthening the processes within the tube and causing variations in rotation. There is a linear relation between tilt-angle oscillation periods and amplitudes, showing higher amplitudes for large periods. The variations of those periods and especially amplitudes have a periodical shape for all types of sunspots and correlate well with the solar activity maxima with a phase delay of about 1–2 years.  相似文献

In the bookMachina Coelestis (1679), Johannes Hevelius lists his daily solar observations from 1653 to 1679. He mentions 19 sunspot groups during this interval, of which 14 are unique to Hevelius and five are confirmed by other observers. There are an additional 9 sunspot groups during this interval that were not observed by Hevelius. In five cases he was not observing, but in the other four cases he did observe but failed to comment upon sunspots. The spots he missed or failed to observe tend to occur near the end of his career. This suggests Hevelius occasionally missed sunspots but usually was a reliable observer. These observations are important because they provide us the only known daily listing of solar observations during the early years of the Maunder Minimum. They are also important because they were overlooked by Wolf, Spoerer, Maunder, Eddy, and others in their study of solar activity in the seventeenth century. They provide us the best record of the sunspot maximum of 1660 when one sunspot lasted at least 86 days as it traversed the solar disk four times. The same region was active for seven solar rotations.  相似文献

We have investigated long-term variations of solar brightness as a function of both time and solar latitude using eight years of ground-based photometric data in conjunction with space-based irradiance data. In particular, we have examined whether the combination of sunspot brightness deficits and facular brightness excesses is sufficient to explain the solar cycle irradiance variations. After correcting for the contribution from sunspots, we find that the irradiance data can be adequately explained by a model in which the remaining brightness variations are due entirely to facular contributions confined to the magnetically active latitudes. Thus we find no support for the hypothesis that there are convectively driven hot bands in the active latitudes, and our data show brightness variations that are well described by a facular contrast function.  相似文献

A huge collection of solar images to visualize sunspot are acquired by various solar observatories spread across the globe. This necessitates efficient tools for detecting and analyzing the sunspots encompassing diverse solar features. One such contribution is delivered in this work by exploiting the intrinsic intensity variations of solar images associated with sunspots and their attributes. The presented mechanism initially, pre-processes the acquired solar images by correcting the intensity variations introduced while profiling from the sun center to the limb followed by smoothening using a localized window. The resultant is then differenced from the global threshold that is obtained as a result of the statistical analysis computed over the probability distribution function of the input image. This arrangement offers higher discerning variations concerned with the local contextual structures related to sunspot, umbra, and penumbra. Also, it captures the major gradient variation between these regions that adds to the pixel heterogeneity surrounding them to finally render an automatic sunspot detection mechanism distinguishing the diverse solar regions. Receiver Operating Characteristics (ROC) investigation on annual solar images in Flexible Image Transport System (FITS) format reveals the presented method’s efficacy. Also, Pearson correlation analysis of the evaluated sunspot numbers from the detected sunspots with the solar catalog reveals the scheme’s detection closeness. Moreover, the model’s simplicity analyzed along the time and space dimensions affirms its extension to real-time analysis  相似文献

What the Sunspot Record Tells Us About Space Climate   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The records concerning the number, sizes, and positions of sunspots provide a direct means of characterizing solar activity over nearly 400 years. Sunspot numbers are strongly correlated with modern measures of solar activity including: 10.7-cm radio flux, total irradiance, X-ray flares, sunspot area, the baseline level of geomagnetic activity, and the flux of galactic cosmic rays. The Group Sunspot Number provides information on 27 sunspot cycles, far more than any of the modern measures of solar activity, and enough to provide important details about long-term variations in solar activity or “Space Climate.” The sunspot record shows: 1) sunspot cycles have periods of 131± 14 months with a normal distribution; 2) sunspot cycles are asymmetric with a fast rise and slow decline; 3) the rise time from minimum to maximum decreases with cycle amplitude; 4) large amplitude cycles are preceded by short period cycles; 5) large amplitude cycles are preceded by high minima; 6) although the two hemispheres remain linked in phase, there are significant asymmetries in the activity in each hemisphere; 7) the rate at which the active latitudes drift toward the equator is anti-correlated with the cycle period; 8) the rate at which the active latitudes drift toward the equator is positively correlated with the amplitude of the cycle after the next; 9) there has been a significant secular increase in the amplitudes of the sunspot cycles since the end of the Maunder Minimum (1715); and 10) there is weak evidence for a quasi-periodic variation in the sunspot cycle amplitudes with a period of about 90 years. These characteristics indicate that the next solar cycle should have a maximum smoothed sunspot number of about 145 ± 30 in 2010 while the following cycle should have a maximum of about 70 ± 30 in 2023.  相似文献

We used an automatic image-processing method to detect solar-activity features observed in white light at the Kislovodsk Solar Station. This technique was applied to automatically or semi-automatically detect sunspots and active regions. The results of this automated recognition were verified with statistical data available from other observatories and revealed a high detection accuracy. We also provide parameters of sunspot areas, of the umbra, and of faculae as observed in Solar Cycle 23 as well as the magnetic flux of these active elements, calculated at the Kislovodsk Solar Station, together with white-light images and magnetograms from the Michaelson Doppler Imager onboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO/MDI). The ratio of umbral and total sunspot areas during Solar Cycle 23 is ≈?0.19. The area of sunspots of the leading polarity was approximately 2.5 times the area of sunspots of the trailing polarity.  相似文献

Comparison of the long-term variation of photospheric faculae areas with that of sunspots shows that studies of faculae provide both complementary and supplementary information on the behaviour of the solar cycle. Detailed studies of the development of sunspots with respect to faculae show that there is a high degree of order over much of a given cycle, but marked differences from cycle to cycle. Within a cycle the relationship between spot and faculae areas appears to be similar for the N and S solar hemispheres, and over the early stages of a cycle it is directly related to the magnitude of the maximum sunspot number subsequently attained in that cycle. This result may well have predictive applications, and formulae are given relating the peak sunspot number to simple parameters derived from this early developmental stage. Full application to the current cycle 21 is denied due to the cessation of the Greenwich daily photoheliographic measurements, but use of the cruder weekly data suggests a maximum smoothed sunspot number of 150 ± 22.The effects of the incompatibility of the spot and faculae data, in that faculae are unobservable over a large fraction of the solar disc and also do not always develop associated spots, have been examined in a detailed study of two cycles and shown not to vitiate the results. Now at NOAA, Environmental Data Service, NGSTDC, Boulder, Colo. 80302, U.S.A.  相似文献
