We propose that photocycloaddition reactions in molecular complexes in normal interstellar clouds will create unusually large molecules. These may be sufficiently radiation stable to be circulated with the interstellar gas, and so provide convenient nucleation centres for growth of loosely bound grains in dark regions.  相似文献

Theoretical predictions by Farebrother et al. and Meijer et al. of rovibrational excitation probabilities in H2 arising from formation by Eley-Rideal processes on a graphite surface are incorporated into a model of the chemistry and excitation of interstellar H2. The model includes the usual radiative and collisional pumping of H2 rotational and vibrational states, in addition to the formation processes. Predictions are made for HH2 rovibrational emission line intensities for representative points in diffuse and in dark interstellar clouds. We find that – if all the interstellar HH2 is formed by this Eley-Rideal process – then the consequences of formation pumping, as distinct from collisional and radiative pumping, should be clearly evident in both cases. In particular, we predict a clear spectral signature of this direct HH2 formation process on graphite, distinct from radiative and collisional pumping; this signature should be evident in both diffuse and dark clouds; but the emissivity for dark clouds is predicted to be some 500 times greater than that in diffuse clouds in which the dense material may be embedded. An observational search for this signature in two dark cloud sources was made, but a preliminary analysis of the data did not yield a detection. The implications of and possible reasons for this preliminary conclusion are discussed. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Shock waves perturb the chemical state of the interstellar gas. We consider the effects of C-shocks on the composition of molecular clouds, for a range of values of the pre-shock gas density and magnetic induction. The time required to re-establish equilibrium in the post-shock gas depends on the initial conditions and can become very large. The significance of the two known chemical phases of dark clouds and of bistability is considered in this context.  相似文献

We develop a three-dimensional numerical model for an ensemble of molecular clouds moving in the fixed gravitational potential of a galaxy. This scheme is a modification of the widely known model of Oort and includes different processes of coagulation and fragmentation of clouds under pairwise collisions, interaction of clouds with the diffuse interstellar medium, and also feedback: the breaking up of clouds into small fragments under the action of stars arising in them. This model makes it possible to study the influence of various parameters of both the galaxy itself and the ensemble of molecular clouds on the process of large-scale star formation connected with giant molecular clouds and on the temporal changes of the global structure of the interstellar medium. We give as an example a computation of the evolution of the energy characteristics of an ensemble of molecular clouds in a spiral galaxy.Translated fromAstrofizika, Vol. 37, No. 4, 1994.  相似文献

We present 2–4 μm spectra of six infrared sources for which the extinction is not purely interstellar, but is dominated by circumstellar or molecular cloud dust. In all cases the absorption bands differ from the interstellar case, though a component of the interstellar absorption is often present. We also present an improved absorption spectrum for the galactic centre source IRS 7, correcting spurious features in our previous spectrum. Three independent components can be identified: (i) The interstellar component, probably of organic origin, and itself not necessarily invariant; (ii) The symmetrical water ice feature at 3.06 μm, found most commonly in molecular clouds; (iii) A component at 3.53 μm possibly identified with solid formaldehyde grains, and seen only in molecular clouds because of its weakness. Other absorption components appear to be unrelated to those in the 3–4 μm region, most notably the 10 μm absorption found in oxygen-rich giants and the interstellar medium, and presumable inorganic in nature. Our observations include the first detection of water ice absorption in a source in the ρ Oph dark cloud. Biological materials provide the best fit to the interstellar case, but do not presently account for the distinct 3.53 μm component. We stress the need for further laboratory experiments using simpler organic materials.  相似文献

Stars form within molecular clouds but our understanding of this fundamental process remains hampered by the complexity of the physics that drives their evolution. We review our observational and theoretical knowledge of molecular clouds trying to confront the two approaches wherever possible. After a broad presentation of the cold interstellar medium and molecular clouds, we emphasize the dynamical processes with special focus to turbulence and its impact on cloud evolution. We then review our knowledge of the velocity, density and magnetic fields. We end by openings towards new chemistry models and the links between molecular cloud structure and star-formation rates.  相似文献

Despite considerable observational information on infrared absorption and emission spectra of interstellar matter, together with extensive laboratory data on the spectra of possible constituents, there are presently few firm identifications of individual chemical components. Simple chemical compounds including H2O, CO and CO2 are detected in dust in dark interstellar clouds, but other molecules such as ethane, acetylene and benzene do not appear to be present with appreciable abundance. Nevertheless, IR spectra show that hydrocarbons are aubiquitous component of interstellar matter. The nature of these materials and their relation to specific molecular components is discussed in this paper. Gravitational settling of dust grains in dark clouds has been considered. It has been shown that such a process gives rise to a modification of the grain size distribution. Starting with a simple model of uniform spherical cloud and normal interstellar grain size distribution for the dust we derive expressions for the modified grain size distribution function, average grain size and extinction as functions of distance from the cloud's center and the age of the cloud. The mean grain size increases towards the center of the cloud as does the extinction. Results of the numerical evaluation of these quantities have been discussed with their implications for the observations of anomalous reddening and polarization within dark clouds and Bok globules.  相似文献

The Sun may well have formed in the type of interstellar cloud currently referred to as a cold, dark cloud. We present current tabulations of the totality of known interstellar molecules and of the subset which have been identified in cold clouds. Molecular abundances are given for two such clouds which show interesting chemical differences in spite of strong physical similarities, Taurus Molecular Cloud 1 (TMC-1) and Lynd's 134N (L134N, also referred to as L183). These regions may be at different evolutionary stages.  相似文献

The temperature of graphite grains in the interstellar medium has been computed with different assumptions on the extrapolation of its optical constants into infrared. It is found that values computed up to now are generally underestimated by 10–20% in normal interstellar conditions. For extreme conditions (very dark clouds) errors by a factor of two are possible and more attention has to be paid in dealing with problems related to molecule formation.  相似文献

The pure rotational spectrum of homonuclear diatomic molecules in the interstellar medium is strongly forbidden, and no such spectrum has been detected. In regions of high excitation, vibrational emission may occur, as is widely detected in the case of H2 in interstellar shocks and photon-dominated regions. However, it is of considerable interest to know the abundance of homonuclear diatomics in quiescent regions. We propose that vibrational emission from homonuclear diatomic molecules in cold clouds may be detectable, where the excitation is mainly through collisions with non-thermal electrons arising from the cosmic-ray ionization of H2. As an example, we estimate the intensity of emission from N2 in cold, dark interstellar clouds. We show that such emission is at the limit of detectability with current technology. Other excitation mechanisms may also contribute and enhance this emission.  相似文献

Measurements of the strengths of the diffuse interstellar bands at 4430, 5780 and 5797 Å show that the bands tend to be week with respect to extinction in dense interstellar clouds. Data on 10 stars in the ? Ophiuchi cloud complex show further that the diffuse band-producing efficiency of the grains decreases systematically with increasing grain size. It is concluded that the diffuse bands are not formed in the mantles which accrete on the grains in interstellar clouds, but that they could be produced in the cores of grains or in some molecular species.  相似文献

New equilibrium thermodynamic distribution models of organic substances important to life in giant molecular clouds are suggested. These models use the normal distribution law of the standard enthalpy and the free energy (Helmholtz energy) for various organic molecules, amino acids, and nucleic acid components. These models were used to forecast organic molecule resources in the interstellar medium of the observable universe. The resources of the main biological molecules were estimated from radio-astronomical data.  相似文献

A discussion is given of the spontaneous coagulation of interstellar grains due to their natural Brownian motion. It is shown that the predicted present day size of such grains, assuming such a mechanism being operative, is in reasonable agreement with observations for three different environments that have been considered: namely, normal interstellar gas clouds, molecular clouds and the atmospheres of cool stars.  相似文献

We describe the results of a study of the mean lifetime of molecular clouds based on actual observations. Using the model of growth from cloud-cloud collision and observations of 13CO along the galactic equator between longitudes 27°.85 and 40°, we derive a lower limit of 1 × 109 yr for the lifetime of the interstellar molecular clouds  相似文献

We present our recently developed 3-dimensional chemodynamical code for galaxy evolution. This code follows the evolution of different galactic components like stars, dark matter and different components of the interstellar medium (ISM), i.e. a diffuse gaseous phase and the molecular clouds. Stars and dark matter are treated as collisionless N-body systems. The ISM is numerically described by a smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) approach for the diffuse gas and a sticky particle scheme for the molecular clouds. Additionally, the galactic components are coupled by several phase transitions like star formation, stellar death or condensation and evaporation processes within the ISM. As an example we show the dynamical and chemical evolution of a star forming dwarf galaxy with a total baryonic mass of 2 ċ 109 M. After a moderate collapse phase the stars and the molecular clouds follow an exponential radial distribution, whereas the diffuse gas shows a central depression as a result of stellar feedback. The metallicities of the galactic components behave quite differently with respect to their temporal evolution as well as their radial distribution. Especially, the ISM is at no stage well mixed. We perform numerical simulations of the molecular hydrogen production on the surface of interstellar dust grains and its dissociation by the ultraviolet background in conditions typical for the interstellar medium. The kinetic version of the Monte Carlo method is used for the modeling of the catalytic chemical reactions on the surface of the dust fraction and in the surrounding medium. Our simulations show the importance of the interstellar dust particles for hydrogen chemistry in diffuse molecular clouds.  相似文献

We consider sulphur depletion in dense molecular clouds, and suggest hydrated sulphuric acid, H2SO4 ·  n H2O, as a component of interstellar dust in icy mantles. We discuss the formation of hydrated sulphuric acid in collapsing clouds and its instability in heated regions in terms of the existing hot core models and observations. We also show that some features of the infrared spectrum of hydrated sulphuric acid have correspondence in the observed spectra of young stellar objects.  相似文献

We have used observations of the rare isotopes of HCN and HNC to determine the relative abundance of these two chemical isomers along the central ridge of the Orion molecular cloud. The abundance ratio [HCN]/[HNC] decreases by more than an order of magnitude from the relatively warm plateau and hot core sources toward the KL nebula to the colder, more quiescent clouds to the north and south. Even in the cooler regions, however, the ratio is an order of magnitude larger than that found in previous investigations of cold dark clouds. We determine the kinetic temperature in the regions we have studied from new observations of methylacetylene (CH3CCH), together with other recent estimates of the gas temperature near KL. The results suggest that the warmer portions of the cloud are dominated by different chemical pathways than those in the general interstellar cloud material.  相似文献
