Deep-seated geodynamic processes are the cause of the existence of the geotectonic stress field. The influence of the latter and therefore of deep-seated processes, in surface geomorphology is investigated. It is noted that the features caused by deep-seated (geotectonic) processes can be distinguished from those caused by exogenic agents (weather, erosion etc.) by their statistical characteristics. All statistically systematic features are of geotectonic origin, random features are of exogenic origin.In this paper, various types of morphological features are analyzed with regard to their origin. It is shown that lineaments seen on air photographs may not be of recent geotectonic origin: specific examples of such lineaments being erosion scarps are given. Next, it is shown that the orientation patterns inherent in fluvial and glacial valleys are indeed affected to a large extent by neotectonic processes. The same is, naturally, the case for rift valleys and chains of volcanoes. A further interesting subject is presented by the so-called “tectonic” landforms: Inselbergs, cirques, the shapes of mountain summits etc., are all shown to be directly or indirectly caused by deep-seated processes. The mass movements on slopes are also of great importance. Although it is often thought that these are triggered by meteorological conditions, it is shown that their basic design is influenced to a large extent by deep-seated processes: amongst other things, this is borne out by a correlation between landslide and earthquake activity. Finally, it is mentioned that the common joints on rock outcrops are also designed by the neotectonic stress field and that the latter can, in fact, be determined by an analysis of joint orientations. In summary, it may be stated that although exogenic agents may be responsible for many morphological features, deep-seated processes have nevertheless a great influence on the fundamental design of such features.  相似文献

The tectonic position of the Kamchatka Cape Peninsula at the junction of the active Kuril–Kamchatka and Aleutian arcs exposes the coastline of the peninsula to strong neotectonic activities. Fracture zones have variable influence on uplift of the Kamchatka Cape Peninsula. Relevant morphologic indicators of neotectonic activity are multilevel, highly uplifted marine terraces and terraces displaced along active faults. Recent uplift rates of coastal sediments are determined by remote sensing via ASTER and SRTM DEM combined with optically stimulated luminescence dating (OSL). On the Kamchatka Cape Peninsula, terraces from the same generation are mapped at different elevations by remote sensing methods. After defining different areas of uplifted terraces, four neotectonic blocks are identified. According to apatite fission track data, the mean differential exhumation rates range from 0.2 to 1.2 mm year?1 across the blocks since Late Miocene. The OSL data presented point to significant higher uplift rates of up to 3 ± 0.5 and 4.3 ± 1 mm year?1, which indicates an acceleration of the vertical movement along the coast of Kamchatka Cape Peninsula in Upper Pleistocene and Holocene times.  相似文献

Fluvial sediments, here assigned to the Bergalia Formation, adjacent to the middle reaches of the Clyde River near Batemans Bay on the New South Wales south coast were deposited prior to a basalt valley flow with K–Ar ages averaging 27.7 ± 0.3 Ma. Similar Bergalia Formation sediments are preserved near Mogo, south of Batemans Bay, and suggest that the Clyde River flowed south through the Mogo area prior to diversion to the east. The diversion resulted from local‐scale neotectonic movements or sea‐level changes after the mid‐Oligocene. The previously undescribed deposits at these two locations provide evidence that relief comparable to or greater than the present existed in the Clyde River valley by this time. The basalt and sediments in the Clyde River valley indicate that the coastal lowlands in southeast New South Wales were developed prior to the mid‐Tertiary period.  相似文献

前人对中国大陆东部新构造期 (N—Q)活动的北东向断裂 (带 )已有很多研究。笔者根据地震构造、新构造和火山活动等资料并结合Pn波速结构研究结果 ,分析了该区新构造期的北西向活动断裂 ,初步得出 :北西向断裂具有成带性 ,可分 7条北西向断裂带 ;它们有鲜明的新生性 ;均为地壳构造带 ;与北东向断裂带呈共轭关系 ,是在先存构造基础上于新构造应力场作用下正在发育的一套地壳共轭剪切破裂系统。  相似文献

 One-third of the population of Oman depends upon groundwater extracted from the alluvium of the Batinah Plain, on the coast of the Gulf of Oman. Deep geophysical exploration techniques were used to determine the depth and nature of the alluvium and the boundaries of the aquifer. The base and structural controls of the alluvial basin at its contact with Tertiary marine sediments and Cretaceous ophiolite were mapped with seismic reflection data, recorded originally for oil exploration. The base of the alluvium dips northward from the foothills of the Northern Oman Mountains, reaching a maximum depth of 2000 m at the coast. The varying facies of the alluvium are grossly characterised by different, overlapping ranges of electrical resistivity, depending largely on the clay content and degree of cementation. Resistivities near the coast are reduced by saline intrusion. These variations of resistivity were mapped with time-domain electromagnetic sounding along 400 km of profile, to distinguish among the three zones of the alluvial aquifer. The wedge of saline intrusion was also delineated, up to 10 km from the coast. The thickness of the saturated gravel aquifer ranges from 20–160 m in an area greater than 600 km2. Planktonic foraminiferal assemblages from the Late Cretaceous-Early Tertiary sedimentary sequence in Quseir (Hammadat section), Safaga (Wasif section) and Esh El-Mellaha (Esh El-Mellaha section) areas along the Red Sea Coast, provide a database for biostratigraphical subdivisions and marking of faunal changes. Ten planktonic foraminiferal zones were found. There are, from base to top, the Late Cretaceous Globotruncana ægyptiaca and Gansserina gansseri Zones and the Early Tertiary Parasubbotina pseudobulloides, Praemurica trinidadensis, P. uncinata, Morozovella angulata, Igorina pusilla, Globanomalina pseudomenardii, Morozovella velascoensis and M. edgari zones.Two intervals of non-deposition of sediments (hiatuses) in the study areas are recorded, indicating tectonic events. The first hiatus occurred all over the study areas near the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary. The second hiatus is restricted to the Late Palæocene of the Safaga area.Two global planktonic foraminiferal faunal turnover events are identified, reflecting major palæoceanographic changes. The faunal turnover event I occurred near the M. angulata/I. pusilla boundary near the Palæocene/Eocene boundary. These turnovers are characterised by the appearance and disappearance of species and changes in relative abundance, diversity and richness of species. Oscillation in the mean sea level in the study areas during the Late Cretaceous-Early Tertiary may be related to a true eustatic change in addition to the evidence for local tectonic control.  相似文献

Recent crustal movements have been observed and studied in several parts of India including the Himalayan and sub-Himalayan regions, the Precambrian shield of peninsular India and also the coastal tracts. The results of studies of Holocene deformation and crustal movements in two type areas are presented, one in the extreme southeastern part of the peninsula and the other in northeastern India.The Precambrian shield in the extreme southeastern part is characterised by a major NE—SW trending fault zone in the Tirupattur—Mattur areas of Tamil Nadu with some major extended faults, one of which apparently cuts through the entire crust and Moho as indicated by gravity data and which is associated with occurrences of alkaline and basic intrusions and carbonatite complex. Evidence of Recent crustal movements in this zone is afforded by geomorphic features and recent and current seismicity of a mild nature which is apparently to be attributed to slow movements along the fault plane.The Shillong plateau in northeastern India occurs as block-uplifted horst, comprising for the most part Archaean crystalline rocks with plateau basalts and Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments occurring on its southern margin. The plateau is bounded by major faults and is located in a zone of high seismicity lying astride and parallel to the eastern Himalayas intervened by the alluvium of the Brahmaputra Valley. Geomorphic features such as raised terraces, straight-edged scarps, etc., provide evidence for Recent crustal movements with dominant vertical movements along the fault planes which have continued through Tertiary and Recent times. Repeated precision levelling measurements conducted by the Survey of India indicate a rate of uplift of 4–5 cm per 100 years during the period 1910–1975.The gravity data pertaining to this region are also discussed in relation to the crustal movements.  相似文献

The paper discusses the distribution of Quaternary sediments, occurrence of saline minerals and phases of neotectonic movements and their manifestations in the Qaidam basin. The formation of four successive lacustrine terraces in Tertiary anticlinal zones in the western part of the basin was related to the neotectonic movements that took place 100 Ka ago, and the distribution of such terraces discloses, in a way. the evolutionary history of the Quaternary salt lakes. According to the distribution of the terraces coupled with the distribution of Quaternary sediments and features of salt deposition, four periods of Quaternary salt lake evolution in the basin may be distinguished, which correspond to four stages of salt deposition respectively.  相似文献

Acoustic profiling carried out with an Edgetech 3300 prophilograph in the junction zone of the Cape Verde Rise, Cape Verde Abyssal Plain, and Grimaldi and Bathymetrists seamounts in the Central Atlantic during Cruise 23 of the R/V Akademik Nikolaj Strakhov allowed us to obtain new data on neotectonic deformations in the ocean and to propose their interpretation. It has been established that neotectonic movements occurred in the discrete manner: blocks of undeformed rocks alternate with linear zones of intense deformation spatially related to paleotransform fracture zones, where anticlines, horsts, diapir-like morphostructures, and grabens were formed. The Cape Verde Ridge is a large horst. Its sedimentary cover is disturbed by thrust (?), reverse, and normal faults, steeply dipping fracture zones, and folds. Three stages of tectonic movements—Oligocene-early Miocene, pre-Quaternary, and Holocene—are recognized. The tectonic deformations occurred largely under near-meridional compression. Extension setting was characteristic of the Cape Verde Ridge and the Carter Rise in the Holocene.  相似文献

In this paper we concentrate particularly on the geomorphological indicators left by active tectonics. In the central foothills of Taiwan, we used topography, drainage pattern and structural data to perform quantitative morphometric analysis and to determine relative age of fault-related anticlines. The Tiehchen, Tatu and Pakua ridge belt is a fault-related anticline system located in the hanging wall of the Changhua fault along the western thrust front of the foothills. Geomorphic systems are analysed with intent to detect the various responses of landforms and drainage pattern to late Quaternary deformation. Topography and drainage basin register uplift and are valuable tools to discriminate lateral propagation of an active frontal fold. Geomorphic field evidence and quantitative morphometric parameters are used to define the evolution of the rising anticline ridges and to infer tectonism style along an active front. Geometry of alluvial fans, formed along the frontal side of the anticlines, and weathered terrace deposits provide relevant information on neotectonics. Knowledge concerning these younger anticline ridges, makes this area a good example of an actively forming mountain front. We discuss in detail the origin of N045°, N095 and N120° trending oblique fault scarps which delimite numerous fault blocks. The fault scarps morphology is characterized by imbricate talus facets. A first-order seismotectonic model was created for South Africa. This was done using four logical steps: geoscientific data collection, characterisation, assimilation and zonation. Through the definition of subunits of concentrations of earthquake foci and large neotectonic and structural domains, seismotectonic structures, systems and domains were created. Relatively larger controls of seismicity exist between the Great Escarpment and the coast. In the south, this region is characterised by large aeromagnetic anomalies and large EW trending faults. In the west, it is characterised by the NW–SE trending Wegener stress anomaly, radial-trending dykes and earthquake clusters. In the east, it is characterised by a large neotectonic domain where several large historical earthquakes occurred. In the centre of South Africa, several clusters of earthquake activity are found, often related to mining activity. Further north, seismicity is related to both mining activity and neotectonic deformation. This work contributes to the development of a seismotectonic model for South Africa by (1) bringing together, digitally, several data sets in a common GIS platform (geology, geophysics, stress, seismicity, neotectonics, topography, crustal and mantle structure and anisotropy), (2) understanding the significance of data sets for seismotectonic zonation and limitations thereof and (3) obtaining a reasonable regional model for use in seismic hazard assessments.  相似文献

We present the results of detailed surficial geologic mapping for a 10 km2 area of alluvial (quebrada) deposits located in the middle Moche Valley of Peru, where archaeological features and deposits provide cross‐cutting relationships and numerical age control for late Holocene erosion and deposition associated with El Niño. Despite surfaces containing clasts that are heavily pitted and cracked due to salt weathering, archaeological and 14C dates indicate that most quebrada landforms in the study area are late Holocene in age and may reflect enhanced alluviation associated with increased El Niño activity beginning ca. 6000 cal yr B.P. Our study provides criteria for correlative dating of other Holocene landforms in the Moche Valley area but urges caution in long‐distance (>100 km) correlation because of geographic variability in surface weathering. Surficial geologic mapping aided by archaeological age control allows improved understanding of the rates of landscape change important to the development of complex irrigation‐based societies in the Peruvian Desert. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.  相似文献

To understand how the present sea impresses a record of its level on the coast is a prerequisite for reading the records of past sea levels. A first approximation for mean rates of coastal retrogradation since the Flandrian Transgression on the microtidal, open ocean, Meditrerranean- climate coast of Western victoria is: (1) Penultimate Glacial basalt 0 cm/yr (no change in gross geometry in spite of quarrying and channel formation). (2)Last Interglacial aeolianite 4 cm/yr. (3) Lower Cretaceous arkose 0.9 cm/yr (4) Lower Cretaceous siltstone 1.75 cm/yr. The rates are so divergent that the record of sea level changes is impressed quite differently on these respective lithologies.  相似文献

中国黄土高原及邻区可划分为六个构造地块和构造接合带,其中央主体部分为一具中等强度活动性的环状构造,2.4Ma以来垂直运动幅度为930—1000m,平均速率为0.39—0.42mm/a。新构造运动可划分为四个主旋回、三个主幕。1.67MaB.P.前后构造应力场由近南北向转为近东西向。黄土-古土壤系列和水系沉积物-古土壤系列可作为新构造运动新的时间标尺。  相似文献

Neotectonic deformation in the western and central part of the Pannonian Basin was investigated by means of surface and subsurface structural analyses, and geomorphologic observations. The applied methodology includes the study of outcrops, industrial seismic profiles, digital elevation models, topographic maps, and borehole data. Observations suggest that most of the neotectonic structures in the Pannonian Basin are related to the inverse reactivation of earlier faults formed mainly during the Miocene syn- and post-rift phases. Typical structures are folds, blind reverse faults, and transpressional strike-slip faults, although normal or oblique-normal faults are also present. These structures significantly controlled the evolution of landforms and the drainage pattern by inducing surface upwarping and river deflections. Our analyses do not support the postulated tectonic origin of some landforms, particularly that of the radial valley system in the western Pannonian Basin. The most important neotectonic strike-slip faults are trending to east-northeast and have dextral to sinistral kinematics in the south-western and central-eastern part of the studied area, respectively. The suggested along-strike change of kinematics within the same shear zones is in agreement with the fan-shaped recent stress trajectories and with the present-day motion of crustal blocks derived from GPS data.  相似文献

Much of the topography of Korea is ancient, but many Quaternary fault outcrops and marine terraces have been observed in the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula. Sufficient evidence of a Quaternary fault is lacking in the geological features of the commercially developed Jukbyun and Uljin areas. Knickpoints that develop on streams can be formed by tectonic activity such as faulting and folding, or can result simply from the differential erosion rates of bedrock. In this study, we investigated the relationship between stream steepness and faults in the Jukbyun area. Stream profile analyses of the Bugu and Namdae basins were performed using a digital elevation model to estimate Quaternary tectonic movements. Stream parameters obtained from analysis of the longitudinal stream profiles of the Bugu and Namdae drainage basins in the northeastern part of the Korean Peninsula indicated neotectonic movement. Thirty of the thirty-nine knickpoints that developed in the downstream areas of the fluvial channels corresponded to fault zones. It is thought that fault activity results in knickpoints in river systems. The normalized relative slope (Ksn) value (54.9) of the BS1 stream in the Bugu drainage basin was higher than that (28.8–36.3) of the other streams in both basins, despite a similar lithology to NS1 and NS2. Therefore, we concluded that stream steepness might be a result of tectonic forcing rather than a product of rock strength in the study area and that stream parameters could provide indirect evidence of Quaternary tectonics in ancient landforms.  相似文献
