The question of the origin of the symbiotic stellar lines at 6830 Å and 7088 Å, recently proposed to arise from Raman scattering of ultraviolet Ovi lines by hydrogen, is examined quantitatively by comparing line intensities expected from this process with the intensity of an Feii line photoexcited by one of the same Ovi lines. It appears that Raman scattering does not yield sufficient intensity to account for the symbiotic lines. An alternative mechanism for producing the lines exists, however, in off-line-center photoexcitation of optically thick hydrogen by the Ovi lines. This gives intensities which are higher than Raman intensities, and which are more consistent with the Feii fluorescent line intensity. Observed further redward shifts are also explained by the mechanism. It is therefore suggested that the proposed hypothesis of Ovi–Hi interaction may be valid, but that the process involved is probably not second-order Raman scattering but first-order fluorescent scattering.  相似文献

The spectral composition and spatial distribution of equatorial coronal emission near 304 Å is examined. Spectral scans indicate that the predominant line is from Si xi. Comparisons of observations with calculations of intensity changes with altitude indicate that collisional excitation is important near the Sun but that photoexcitation becomes dominant beyond about 1.3 R from the solar center. Observed and calculated intensities are in approximate agreement for abundances and electron densities that are within the range of observed values.  相似文献

An ultraviolet spectral probe for a hydrogen-rich planetary atmosphere, such as that of Jupiter, is suggested, utilizing discrete lines in the H2staggered+ 2u?1g electronic transition. For the Jovian atmosphere, the dominant mechanism for exciting H2+ to its 2u state appears to be photoexcitation, principally through absorption of the solar Lyman-α line. We estimate that the Jovian column emission rate of the H2+ 2u(ν′ = 2, J′ = 1) →1g(ν″ = 18,J″ = 0) fluorescent line at 1236.6 Å is if1 photon cmsu-2 secsu-1; i.e., that if1 photon secsu-1 of this radiation would strike a 15-cm diameter mirror in a Jupiter fly-by at an impact parameter of 3 × 105km. The critical role of corrections to the Born-Oppenheimer approximation in the use of an H2+ probe is discussed.  相似文献

Temperatures and temperature gradients for the outer corona are obtained from brightness gradients of EUV lines that were measured with the spectroheliograph on OSO-7. Brightness gradients show considerable deviations from isothermal model calculations that include collisional excitation and photoexcitation. A negative temperature gradient that gives both positive and negative ion abundance gradients appears to be able to account for the discrepancy. For 284 of Fe xv, perhaps the strongest line from the outer corona, measurements during 1972 appear to be consistent with (i) a temperature near 2.3×106K near the equator at = 1.3±0.1 solar radii from the solar center; (ii) (/T) dT/d values near -0.7 that extend from as low as = 1.2 to about = 1.8. Temperatures from strong lines of Fe xiv and Fe xvi indicate that variations of about ±0.2×106K exist along lines of sight where emission is appreciable. There appears to be some agreement between these results and temperature measurements from ion abundances in the solar wind and Doppler width of 5303.  相似文献

We study the kinematic properties of stars under the combined potential of a Kuzmin disk with a simple radial oscillation and a logarithmic halo. The results are: 1) There exist stable, ordered and near-circular orbits. 2) The effect of the oscillating disk is greater on orbits with smaller angular momenta and on that departly greatly from the near-circular orbits. 3) Most of the motion in the disk is ordered motion. 4) Orbits that depart greatly from the near-circular orbits generally have chaotic motion and may eventually escape. But the actual fraction escaped in one Hubble time is small. 5) Disk oscillation may be one of the mechanisms for the formation and long-term maintenance of some star clusters; the larger the amplitude, the greater may be the number of clusters; for a given disk galaxy, there may be more clusters with small than with large angular momenta.  相似文献

Recent observations of white dwarfs in globular clusters indicate that these stars may get a velocity kick during their time as giants. This velocity kick could originate naturally if the mass loss while on the asymptotic giant branch is slightly asymmetric. If white dwarfs get a kick comparable to the orbital velocity of the binary, the initial Runge–Lenz vector (eccentricity vector) of the orbit is damped to be replaced by a component pointing toward the cross-product of the initial angular momentum and the force. The final eccentricity may be of the order of unity and if the kick is sufficiently large, the system may be disrupted. These results may have important ramifications for the evolution of binary stars and planetary systems.  相似文献

The paper by Reid suggests that masses may be stored in circumlunar orbits for long periods of time, limited only by tidal dissipation. The real loss may, however, be much faster, due to large changes in the orbit caused by the disturbing field of the Earth. It is shown that the example quoted of Jupiter's satellites is inadequate to make the case for stability of such orbits.  相似文献

Observations of Io suggest that it may have an atmosphere in which sodium vapor, ammonia, and nitrogen are important constituents. Several atmospheric models consisting of these gases are treated here. These are tested as a function of total content against the Pioneer 10 observations and for stability against escape. The results suggest that the atmosphere is very tenuous and that the interpretation of the ionosphere detected by Pioneer 10 by a static model may be inconsistent with the sodium cloud observations. It is postulated that ionization may also be escaping and that sodium may be comparable in content in the atmosphere with some molecular constituent such as NH3 or N2. Sodium and this molecular component then dominate the atmosphere. It is also suggested that particle precipitation contributes to heating of the atmosphere and to the production of ionization; furthermore, the difference between day- and nighttime ionospheres and possible trailing and leading side effects may relate to the nature of the particle energy distributions. These distributions may be the result of the peculiar interaction of Io with the Jovian magnetosphere.  相似文献

An electromagnetic model of relativistic jets is outlined. It is suggested that these jets be interpreted as current flows and that they owe their persistence and collimation to the pinching action of the magnetic field. Such structures are unstable and it is suggested that the nonlinear development of these instabilities involves the formation of an electromagnetic turbulence spectrum. This turbulence may be responsible for the acceleration of relativistic electrons and positrons. It may also provide the electromagnetic field in which these electrons and positrons radiate. Some mechanisms through which circular polarisation may be created in this environment are outlined.  相似文献

The problem of predicting the radio emission from the quiet Sun for meter and decameter waves may be formulated in terms of a standard radiative transfer problem with conservative scattering. One may therefore avoid the numerical complications involved in using a ray-tracing approach which incorporates a Monte-Carlo routine for representing scattering. The brightness and extent of the radio Sun are calculated for several values of the electron temperature and scattering parameter of Steinberg et al. (1971). It is concluded that the temperature and density model of Newkirk (1967) for solar maximum reasonably represents the observations. However, some observations appear to be inconsistent with scattering models and further observations are needed. It is shown (in Appendix B) that the standard ray-tracing technique incorporating a Monte-Carlo routine for the scattering may be replaced by a diffusion approximation.  相似文献

Weak dust ion-acoustic (DIA) double- layers (DLs) in a dusty plasma with nonextensive electrons are addressed. A generalized Korteweg-de Vries equation with a cubic nonlinearity is derived. It is shown that under certain conditions, the effect of electron nonextensivity can be quite important. In particular, it may be noted that due to the net negative dust charge and electron nonextensivity, the present dusty plasma model may admit compressive as well as rarefactive weak DIA-DLS. Considering the wide relevance of nonlinear oscillations in space dusty plasmas, our investigation may be taken as a prerequisite for the understanding of the nonlinear structures observed in the ionosphere and the auroral acceleration regions.  相似文献

Pitch-angle diffusion coefficients of electrons have been calculated for resonant interaction with electrostatic electron-cyclotron harmonic (ECH) waves using quasi linear diffusion theory. Calculations have been performed for the planets Earth and Jupiter at three radial distances for each planet. Electron precipitation fluxes have also been calculated and compared with observed fluxes. At Earth, electrons of energy ≤200 eV may be put on strong diffusion at L = 10. At lower L values, observed ECH wave amplitudes are insufficient to put electrons on strong diffusion. At Jupiter, electrons can be put on strong diffusion at all L values. However, the energy of electrons which may be put on strong diffusion decreases from about 1 keV at L = 7 to ~100 eV at L = 17. It is concluded that ECH waves may be partly responsible for diffuse auroral precipitation of low energy electrons at Jupiter for lower L values. At Earth contribution of ECH waves to diffuse aurora is quite small.  相似文献

Experimental data on cohesion-free particle transport in fluid beds are applied, via a universal scaling relation, to atmospheric transport of fine grains on Mars. It may be that cohesion due to impact vitrification, vacuum sintering, and adsorbed thin films of water are absent on Mars—in which case the curve of threshold velocity versus grain size may show no turnup to small particle size, and one micron diameter grains may be injected directly by saltation into the Martian atmosphere more readily than 100 micron diameter grains. Curves for threshold and terminal velocities are presented for the full range of Martian pressures and temperatures. Suspension of fine grains is significantly easier at low temperatures and high pressures; late afternoon brightenings of many areas of Mars, and the generation of dust storms in such deep basins as Hellas, may be due to this effect.  相似文献

Abstract— Terrestrial impact craters are important geological and geomorphological objects that are significant not only for scientific research but for industrial and commercial purposes. The structures may contain commercial minerals produced directly by thermodynamic transformation of target rocks (including primary forming ores) controlled by some morphological, structural or lithological factors and exposed in the crater. Iron and uranium ores, nonferrous metals, diamonds, coals, oil shales, hydrocarbons, mineral waters and other raw materials occur in impact craters. Impact morphostructures may be used for underground storage of gases or liquid waste material. Surface craters may serve as reservoirs for hydropower. These ring structures may be of value to society in other ways. Scientific investigation of them is especially important in comparative planetology, terrestrial geology and in other divisions of the natural sciences.  相似文献

In this paper the process of magnetic convection is studied. It is shown that outside of a radius of about 2 × 105 km, magnetic fields in the Sun may be buoyant. Outside this limit strong field regions tend to rise at the expense of weak field regions which tend to sink. Magnetic convection may be important in magnetic stars and even in the solar interior. A recent calculation of the angular velocity of the Sun provides a period of rotation for the solar core of from 0.5 to 5 days. This calculation requires that the magnetic field extract angular momentum from the solar interior. Magnetic convection thus seems to be required, if this calculation is correct. Furthermore, magnetic convection may transfer heat and thereby possibly change the internal temperature structure of the Sun from what would be expected solely by radiation transfer.  相似文献

An abundance analysis based on a high-resolution spectrum is presented for a newly discovered post-asymptotic giant branch (PAGB) star in the globular cluster M79. The surprising result is that the iron abundance of the star is apparently about 0.6 dex less than that of the cluster's red giants as reported by published studies including a recent high-resolution spectroscopic analysis by Carretta and colleagues. Abundances relative to iron appear to be the same for the PAGB star and the red giants for the 15 common elements. It is suggested that the explanation for the lower abundances of the PAGB star may be that its atmospheric structure differs from that of a classical atmosphere; the temperature gradient may be flatter than predicted by a classical atmosphere.  相似文献

The rotation period-activity luminosity and the rotation period-surface activity flux correlations for the components of RS CVn-type binaries are discussed. It is argued that such correlations, although they are required by dynamo generated magnetic fields, do not represent the dominant parameter in determining the level of activity. Evidences are given that these correlations may essentially be induced by the period-radius dependence for the components of RS CVn-type binaries, and in addition, this result may well be valid for all the late-type stars (single or binary components).  相似文献
