Metamorphic Evolution of the Seward Peninsula Blueschist Terrane   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Blucschists and greenschists of the central Seward Peninsula(the Nome Group) crop out over an 8000 km2 area. The protolithpackage for the mid-Jurassic high P/T metamorphism consistedlargely of Cambrian, possibly also Precambrian, to Devoniansedimentary rocks (limestones, marls, pelites, carbonaceoussiltites, quartzites) of shallow water miogeoclinal origin, which maintained a coherent lithostratigraphy during metamorphismand concurrent high-strain, noncoaxial deformation. Several experimentally and empirically calibrated geothermobarometershave been integrated with textural and microstructural observationsin order to derive a pressure-temperature (P-T) path for themetamorphism of the Nome Group. These data, coupled with previouslyobtained Rb-Sr phengite-whole-rock isochron ages, yield a P-T-tpath showing a steep burial segment followed by a prolongedperiod ({small tilde}55 Ma) of isothermal decompression. Peakpressures, obtained from the jadeite content of clinopyroxenein rare, isofacial eclogites, and from the celadonite contentin phengite yield {small tilde}12 kb. Temperatures at this pressure, gained from garnet-clinopyroxene and microcline-plagioclasepairs, were 460?30?C. Decompression temperatures were essentiallythe same, as evidenced by calcite-dolomite and garnet-biotitethermometry. Uniformity of metamorphic conditions throughoutthe Seward Peninsula blueschist terrane coupled with the miogeoclinalnature of the protolith package indicate burial beneath a flat-lying(A-type) subduction zone. The derived P-T-t path is difficultto reconcile with one-dimensional thermal models of collisionalblueschists, where peak P and T are not generally coincident.  相似文献

PT conditions and prograde PT paths have beencalculated for amphibolite-grade pelites and amphibolites fromCordillera Darwin, Tierra del Fuego, Chile. Peak PT conditionsare nearly all within the kyanite stability field; temperaturesgenerally show an increase with increasing grade, but pressureshave a less consistent trend, possibly increasing slightly fromgarnet to kyanite grade. PT paths from pelites show heatingby 80–100C during loading of 0•2–3 kbar. Texturalanalysis and previous structural work indicate that this segmentof the path correlates with back-folding deformation. PTpaths from two Mg-rich garnet amphibolites suggest a decreasein pressure of as much as 3 kbar with 25–50C of heatingfrom the kyanite stability field to the sillimanite, and areconsistent with pervasive, minor development of fibrolitic sillimanitealong plagioclase grain boundaries. Together, the PTpath segments from pelites and amphibolites constitute a clockwisePT trajectory. The proposed clockwise PT paths are consistent with theinterpretation that Cordillera Darwin represents an extensionallyexhumed metamorphic core complex, in which loading during garnetgrowth in the pelitic rocks was succeeded by differential upliftduring garnet growth in magnesian amphibolites. * Present address: Department of Geology and Geophysics, University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wisconsin 53706  相似文献

The Diahot terrane of NE New Caledonia contains an interbeddedsequence of Cretaceous to Eocene metasediments, felsic and maficmetavolcanics that experienced c. 40 Ma high-P/T metamorphism.Metabasaltic assemblages define two prograde events (M1 andM2) and a tectonically disrupted crustal profile that extendsfrom lawsonite–blueschist conditions in the SW to paragonite–eclogiteconditions in the NE. Weakly deformed metabasalts from lowest-gradeparts of the Diahot terrane contain M1 omphacite, chlorite, lawsonite and glaucophane-bearing assemblages that partiallypseudomorph igneous plagioclase and augite, and reflect P =0·7–1·0 GPa and T = 350–400°C.M1 assemblages are enveloped by a steeply SW-dipping S2 foliationthat becomes progressively more intense towards the NE overa distance of c. 15 km. S2 assemblages are divided into fourzones: (1) lawsonite–omphacite; (2) lawsonite–clinozoisite–spessartine;(3) clinozoisite–hornblende–almandine; (4) almandine–omphacite.S2 assemblages reflect a PT gradient that spans the exposed15 km of the Diahot terrane from P = 0·8–1·0GPa and T = 350–400°C (Zone 1) to P = 1·6–1·7GPa and T = 550–600°C (Zone 4). The systematic mineralogicalchanges reflect parts of a PT array between 1·0and 1·7 GPa that was extensively disrupted by tectonicthinning during exhumation. Migmatitic granulites and arc-related felsic intrusives of Pan-Africanage form the bedrock in the Rio de Janeiro area, SE Brazil. These rocks preserve a partial record of three parageneses. The earliest assemblage (M1) grew during fabric formation inthe rocks (D1) and is characterized by the mineral assemblagePl + Bt + Sil + Kfs + Qtz. Peak metamorphic conditions (M2)are characterized by the assemblage Bt + Crd + Kfs + Pl + Grt+ liq + Qtz and are inferred to have developed during D2 foldingof the rocks at T = 750–800°C and P = 7 kbar. M3 reactiontextures overprint the M2 assemblage and comprise symplectiticintergrowth of cordierite(II) and quartz that formed after garnet, whereas secondary biotite formed as a result of reactions betweengarnet and K-feldspar. By comparing the observed modal abundanceswith modal contours of garnet, cordierite and quartz on therelevant pseudosection a post M2 PT vector indicatingcontemporaneous cooling and decompression can be deduced. Theinferred equilibrium assemblage and reaction textures are interpretedto reflect a clockwise PT path involving heating followedby post-peak decompression and associated cooling. We inferthat metamorphism occurred in response to advective heatingby the abundant syn-collisional (arc-related) I-type granitoidsin the region, consistent with the unusually high peak T/P ratio. Previous studies of metapelitic rocks from the core of the southernBrittany metamorphic belt suggest a complex clockwise PTevolution. We use pseudosections calculated for an average subaluminousmetapelite composition in the MnNCKFMASH system and averagePT calculations to investigate in more detail the metamorphicevolution of these rocks. For migmatites, sequential occurrenceof kyanite, kyanite + staurolite and sillimanite suggests thata prograde evolution to P > 8 kbar at T  相似文献

The solubility of sulfur as S2– has been experimentallydetermined for 19 silicate melt compositions in the system CaO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2(CMAS)± TiO2 ± FeO, at 1400°C and 1 bar, using CO–CO2–SO2gas mixtures to vary oxygen fugacity (fO2) and sulfur fugacity(fS2). For all compositions, the S solubility is confirmed tobe proportional to (fS2/fO2)1/2, allowing the definition ofthe sulfide capacity (CS) of a silicate melt as CS = [S](fO2/fS2)1/2.Additional experiments covering over 150 melt compositions, including some with Na and K, were then used to determine CSas a function of melt composition at 1400°C. The resultswere fitted to the equation  相似文献

Eclogites and blueschists occur in the basement and continentalshelf deposits in the Saih Hatat tectonic window of northeasternOman, where they structurally underlie the Semail ophiolite. These eclogites and blueschists constitute part of a coherenthigh-P/T metamorphic terrain comprised of interlayered metabasites, metapelites, and quartzofeldspathic and calcareous mica schists. The metabasites record a continuous regional trend of increasingP and T from west to east, where crossite-epidote schists incentral and western Saih Hatat grade into blueschists and eclogitesat As-Sifah, allowing for the subdivision of this terrain intothree metamorphic zones. P-T conditions range from 4?5 to 5?5kb atT <340?C for zone A to >10?2 kb at 500–580?Cfor zone C. Zoning patterns of garnets, pyroxenes, and phengite, and thecompositions of pyroxene and amphibole inclusions in garnet, indicate that the eclogites and enclosing high-grade blueschistsof zone C followed a ‘clockwise’ P-T rpath of increasingP and T followed by increasing T and decreasing P and a finalstage of retrogression. Garnets and pyroxenes crystallized atdifferent stages of P-T evolution of the terrain in the variouseclogite pods and boudins. This conclusion and the contrastingmineralogies of the eclogites and the enclosing blueschistsare attributed to differences in bulk-rock chemistry, fluidavailability, or fluid compositions within the terrain. The blueschists and eclogites of this terrain formed as a resultof A-type subduction and crustal thickening of the Oman continentalmargin along an east-northeast-dipping thrust or ‘subductionzone’ which was initiated by the change in plate motionbetween Africa and Eurasia at 131 Ma. High P/T metamorphismcontinued until the final stages of ophiolite emplacement inthe late Cretaceous, as indicated by the metamorphism of thethrust sheets overlying the coherent terrain.  相似文献

The Solubility of Sulphur in Hydrous Rhyolitic Melts   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
Experiments performed at 2 kbar, in the temperature range 800–1000°C,with fO2 between NNO–2·3 and NNO+2·9 (whereNNO is the nickel–nickel oxide buffer), and varying amountsof sulphur added to hydrous metaluminous rhyolite bulk compositions, were used to constrain the solubility of sulphur in rhyolitemelts. The results show that fS2 exerts a dominant control onthe sulphur solubility in hydrous silicate melts and that, dependingon fO2, a rhyolitic melt can reach sulphur contents close to1000 ppm at high fS2. At fO2 below NNO+1, the addition of ironto a sulphur-bearing rhyolite magma produces massive crystallizationof pyrrhotite and does not enhance the sulphur solubility ofthe melt. For a given fO2, the melt-sulphur-content increaseswith fS2. For fixed fO2 and fS2, temperature exerts a positivecontrol on sulphur solubilities, at least for fO2 below NNO+1.The mole fraction of dissolved sulphur exhibits essentiallylinear dependence on fH2S at low fO2 and, although the experimentalevidence is less clear, on fSO2 at high fO2. The minimum insulphur solubility corresponds to the redox range where bothfH2S and fSO2 are approximately equal. A thermodynamic modelof sulphur solubility in hydrous rhyolite melts is derived assumingthat total dissolved sulphur results from the additive effectsof H2S and SO2 dissolution reactions. The model reproduces wellthe minimum of sulphur solubility at around NNO+1, in additionto the variation of the sulphide to sulphate ratio with fO2.A simple empirical model of sulphur solubility in rhyoliticmelts is derived, and shows good correspondence between modeland observations for high-silica rhyolites. The Menderes Massif and the overlying Lycian Nappes occupy anextensive area of SW Turkey where high-pressure–low-temperaturemetamorphic rocks occur. Precise retrograde PT pathsreflecting the tectonic mechanisms responsible for the exhumationof these high-pressure–low-temperature rocks can be constrainedwith multi-equilibrium PT estimates relying on localequilibria. Whereas a simple isothermal decompression is documentedfor the exhumation of high-pressure parageneses from the southernMenderes Massif, various PT paths are observed in theoverlying Karaova Formation of the Lycian Nappes. In the uppermostlevels of this unit, far from the contact with the MenderesMassif, all PT estimates depict cooling decompressionpaths. These high-pressure cooling paths are associated withtop-to-the-NNE movements related to the Akçakaya shearzone, located at the top of the Karaova Formation. This zoneof strain localization is a local intra-nappe contact that wasactive in the early stages of exhumation of the high-pressurerocks. In contrast, at the base of the Karaova Formation, alongthe contact with the Menderes Massif, PT calculationsshow decompressional heating exhumation paths. These paths areassociated with severe deformation characterized by top-to-the-eastshearing related to a major shear zone (the Gerit shear zone)that reflects late exhumation of high-pressure parageneses underwarmer conditions. Counting and Sampling Errors in Modal Analysis by Point Counter   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:1
SOLOMON  M. 《Journal of Petrology》1963,4(3):367-382
There are three principal sources of errors involved in modalanalyses by point counting: (a) operator variation, (b) thedetermination of area by grid counting, (c) the determinationof volumes from areal analyses. Operator variation is likely to be negligible but (b) and (c)may combine to give a variance equal to, or less than where A=measurement area, a=grid spacing, R=grain radius, andp=the fraction of the particular mineral in the rock (Hasofer,1963).  相似文献

Experimental phase equilibrium data on compositions of coexistingpyroxenes in the quadrilateral enstatite-diopside-ferrosilite-hedenbergitehave been used to model pyroxene solid solutions and to formulatepyroxene geothermometers. Each pyroxene is treated as a solidsolution of four quad-components using the Kohler formulation where Gij* is the excess free energy of mixing in a binary solutioncalculated with binary mole fractions (e.g. Xio = Xi/(Xi+Xj))and Xi is the mole fraction in a multicomponent solution. Thefit to the experimental data is achieved by minimizing the totalGibbs free energy of the assemblage. The following set of thermochemicaldata and simple mixture parameters (Wij) are found to be bestsuited. Standard (T = 298?15 K) enthalpy and entropy of formationfrom elements for fictive orthohedenbergite are –1416?8kJ and 84?88 J K–1 mol –1 respectively. The heatcapacity is given by 114?67+17?09E-3T–31?40E5T–2.The Wij data are: Opx: W12 = W21 = 25 W13 = (13?1–0-015T),W31 = (3?37–0?005T), W23 = 20, W32 = 16, W24 = 5, W42= 7, W34 = 15, W43 = 15; Cpx: W12 = (25?484+0?0812P), W21 =(31?216–0?0061P),W31 = W13 = 0W14 = (93?3–0?045T), W41 = (–20?0+0?028T),W23 = 24, W32 = 15, W24 = 12, W42 = 12, W34 = (16?941+0?00592P),W43 = (20?697–0?00235P). Coexisting pyroxene compositionshave been computed in the temperature range of 700 to 1400?C. Two geothermometers have been constructed, one based on atomicfraction of iron (Fe/(Fe + Mg)) in orthopyroxene and the Fe-Mgdistribution coefficient and the other, based on wollastonitecontent of clinopyroxene. The two scales yield different temperatureswhen applied to the same rock. In igneous pyroxenes, the Catransfer ceased at 150 to 200?C above the closure temperatureof the Fe-Mg ion-exchange. In metamorphic rocks an oppositeeffect seems to have prevailed.  相似文献

The Southern Yenisey Range (Eastern Siberia) consists of thegranulite-facies Kanskiy complex bordered by the lower-gradeYeniseyskiy and Yukseevskiy complexes. Samples of metapeliteof the Kanskiy complex typically show characteristic garnet-formingreaction textures and near-isobaric cooling PT paths. An important new result of this study concerns the differencein shape of the PT paths from different parts of theKanskiy granulite complex: metapelites collected 8 km from theboundary with the Yeniseyskiy complex followed a linear pathwith dP/dT 0·006 kbar/°C; metapelites collected3 km from this boundary reveal a kinked PT path withan interval of burial cooling (dP/dT –0·006 kbar/°C).The difference in the shape of the PT paths is supportedby the chemical zoning of garnet studied in the second groupof samples. A mechanism of buoyant exhumation of granulite issuggested by comparison with the results of numerical modelling, which indicate that such a diversity of PT paths mayresult from a transient disturbance of the thermal structureby rapid differential movement of material from different crustallevels. To arrive at a correct tectonic interpretation, thewhole assemblage of interrelated PT paths of metamorphicrocks collected from different localities within the same complexmust be studied. High-Mg–Al, silica-undersaturated metapelites from theOygarden Group of islands, East Antarctica, preserve clear evidencefor the stable coexistence of the assemblage orthopyroxene +corundum in natural rocks. The quartz-absent metapelite occursas pods and isolated layers within a high-strain zone relatedto deformation during the c. 0·93 Ga Rayner StructuralEpisode. Assemblages that include orthopyroxene, corundum, sapphirine, sillimanite, cordierite, garnet and kornerupine are developedacross a pre-existing compositional zoning, leading to contrastingmineral Fe–Mg ratios. The assemblage orthopyroxene–corundumis shown to exist in only a very restricted range of bulk compositionsand PT histories. Simplified qualitative FMAS grids havebeen constructed for kornerupine-absent and -present systems, illustrating MAS terminations and divariant equilibria thathelp to describe the mineral assemblage and reaction history.Reaction textures that include coronas of sapphirine and sillimaniteseparating orthopyroxene and corundum, and symplectites of orthopyroxene+ sapphirine ± cordierite/plagioclase, orthopyroxene+ sillimanite ± cordierite/plagioclase and orthopyroxene+ sapphirine + sillimanite embaying garnet, imply a clockwisePTt evolution. The Kyffhäuser Crystalline Complex, Central Germany, formspart of the Mid-German Crystalline Rise, which is assumed torepresent the Variscan collision zone between the East Avalonianterrane and the Armorican terrane assemblage. High-precisionU–Pb zircon and monazite dating indicates that sedimentaryrocks of the Kyffhäuser Crystalline Complex are youngerthan c. 470 Ma and were intruded by gabbros and diorites between345 ± 4 and 340 ± 1 Ma. These intrusions had magmatictemperatures between 850 and 900°C, and caused a contactmetamorphic overprint of the sediments at PT conditionsof 690–750°C and 5–7 kbar, corresponding toan intrusion depth of 19–25 km. At 337 ± 1 Ma themagmatic–metamorphic suite was intruded by granites, syenitesand diorites at a shallow crustal level of some 7–11 km.This is inferred from a diorite, and conforms to PT pathsobtained from the metasediments, indicating a nearly isothermaldecompression from 5–7 to 2–4 kbar at 690–750°C.Subsequently, the metamorphic–magmatic sequence underwentaccelerated cooling to below 400°C, as constrained by garnetgeospeedometry and a previously published K–Ar muscoviteage of 333 ± 7 Ma. With respect to PTDtdata from surrounding units, rapid exhumation of the KCC canbe interpreted to result from NW-directed crustal shorteningduring the Viséan. Extensive high-grade polydeformed metamorphic provinces surroundingArchaean cratonic nuclei in the East Antarctic Shield recordtwo tectono-thermal episodes in late Mesoproterozoic and lateNeoproterozoic–Cambrian times. In Western Dronning MaudLand, the high-grade Mesoproterozoic Maud Belt is juxtaposedagainst the Archaean Grunehogna Province and has traditionallybeen interpreted as a Grenvillian mobile belt that was thermallyoverprinted during the Early Palaeozoic. Integration of newU–Pb sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe and conventionalsingle zircon and monazite age data, and Ar–Ar data onhornblende and biotite, with thermobarometric calculations onrocks from the H.U. Sverdrupfjella, northern Maud Belt, resultedin a more complex PTt evolution than previouslyassumed. A c. 540 Ma monazite, hosted by an upper ampibolite-faciesmineral assemblage defining a regionally dominant top-to-NWshear fabric, provides strong evidence for the penetrative deformationin the area being of Pan-African age and not of Grenvillianage as previously reported. Relics of an eclogite-facies garnet–omphaciteassemblage within strain-protected mafic boudins indicate thatthe peak metamorphic conditions recorded by most rocks in thearea (T = 687–758°C, P = 9·4–11·3kbar) were attained subsequent to decompression from P >12·9 kbar. By analogy with limited U–Pb singlezircon age data and on circumstantial textural grounds, thisearlier eclogite-facies metamorphism is ascribed to subductionand accretion around 565 Ma. Post-peak metamorphic K-metasomatismunder amphibolite-facies conditions is ascribed to the intrusionof post-orogenic granite at c. 480 Ma. The recognition of extensivePan-African tectonism in the Maud Belt casts doubts on previousRodinia reconstructions, in which this belt takes a pivotalposition between East Antarctica, the Kalahari Craton and Laurentia.Evidence of late Mesoproterozoic high-grade metamorphism duringthe formation of the Maud Belt exists in the form of c. 1035Ma zircon overgrowths that are probably related to relics ofgranulite-facies metamorphism recorded from other parts of theMaud Belt. The polymetamorphic rocks are largely derived froma c. 1140 Ma volcanic arc and 1072 ± 10 Ma granite. KEY WORDS: Maud Belt; Pan-African orogeny; geochronology; PTt path, East Antarctica  相似文献

Integrated metamorphic and geochronological data place new constraintson the metamorphic evolution of a Neoproterozoic orogen in eastAntarctica. Granulite-facies rocks from a 150 km stretch ofthe Kemp Land coast reflect peak conditions involving T 870–990°Cat P 7·4–10 kbar, with pressure increasing westwardtowards an Archaean craton. Electron microprobe-derived (Th+ U)–Pb monazite ages from metapelitic assemblages indicatethat the major mineral textures in these rocks developed duringthe c. 940 Ma Rayner Orogeny. Complex compositional zoning inmonazite suggests high-T recrystallization over c. 25 Myr. Diversityin metapelitic reaction textures reflects silica and ferromagnesiancontent: Si-saturated Fe-rich metapelites contain garnet thatis partially pseudomorphed by biotite and sillimanite, whereasSi-saturated Mg-rich metapelites and Si-undersaturated metapeliticpods have reaction microstructures involving cordierite enclosingorthopyroxene, garnet and/or sapphirine, cordierite + sapphirinesymplectites around sillimanite and coarse-grained orthopyroxene+ corundum separated by sapphirine coronae. Interpretationsbased on PT pseudosections provide integrated bulk-rockconstraints and indicate a clockwise PTt pathcharacterized by a post-peak PT trajectory with dP/dT 15–20 bar/ °C. This moderately sloped decompressive-coolingPT path is in contrast to near-isothermal decompressionPT paths commonly cited for this region of the RaynerComplex, with implications for the post-collisional tectonicresponse of the mid- to lower crust within this orogenic belt. The Genesis of Zoned Skarns in the Sierra Nevada, California   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Zoned skarns occur at plutonic-metamorphic contacts, in veinscutting marble, and at contacts between marble and interlayeredamphibolite and biotite-rich rocks. For P = 2 kb, fluid inclusionsand P-T-XCO2 stability relations of calc-silicate assemblagessuggest T< 650 °C and a H2O-rich fluid (XCO2 < 0.1).Small-scale, Ca-rich endoskarns are common near exoskarns. Massbalance calculations suggest that: (a) the formation of exoskarnrequires the influx of solute in an aqueous solution from uncontaminatedmagma in addition to material derived from the endoskarn, (b)some ‘limestone assimilation’ is required to formendoskarns, and (c) skarn formation was essentially a constant-volumeprocess. Applying chromatographic theory, compositional profilesof garnet and pyroxene across zoned skarns suggest that infiltrationmetasomatism was an important process, although diffusion metasomatismappears to have produced local compositional gradients at theinfiltration ‘fronts’. Fluid flow calculations showthat thick exoskarns could readily form by intergranular infiltration of aqueous solutions. Reciprocal diffusional exchangeis suggested as a dominant mechanism in the formation of zonedskarns formed at contacts between interlayered metamorphic lithologies.  相似文献

The Influence of Viscosity on Fountains in Magma Chambers   总被引:5,自引:4,他引:5
Geological observations suggest that basaltic magmas mix readilybut that rhyolites and basalts can erupt through the same volcanicvent without mixing. The implication is that viscosity may havean important influence on the mixing of magmas. This paper examines the influence of viscosity on magma mixingwhen a magma of low viscosity is injected as a turbulent fountaininto a chamber containing a magma of higher viscosity. Threeseries of experiments were carried out. In the first, the lowviscosity fluid was injected into the tank at a Reynolds number(Re1) of about 1000 to ensure that flow within the fountainwas fully turbulent. Both fluids were maintained at the sametemperature and the viscosity of the host fluid was varied systematically. If the viscosities of the two fluids are similar, turbulencein the fountain leads to extensive mixing and to formation ofa density-stratified layer which collects at the bottom of thetank. However, if the viscosity ratio of the fluids used isgreater than 400, no detectable mixing occurs. Motion withinthe fountain is again fully turbulent but the high momentumof the input fluid is not transmitted to the more viscous hostfluid. Experiments carried out at intermediate viscosity ratiosresulted in intermediate amounts of mixing. Theoretical considerations suggest that the criterion for mixingin turbulent fountains, when a fluid of low viscosity v1 isinjected into a fluid of much higher viscosity v2 is wd>kv2 where w is the flow velocity through an input pipe of diameterd and k is a constant. This relationship is believed to be ageneral one, applying equally to jets and plumes, although thevalues of k may vary with the nature of the flow. The secondseries of experiments was designed to test this relationshipand determine values of k for fountains. The results show that,if wd/v2 > 70, the inflowing fluid mixes with the host fluidas there was no viscosity difference between them. However,if wd/v2 < 7, little or no mixing occurs even if motion withinthe fountain is fully turbulent. In the third series of experiments the temperature of the inputfluid was 70?C above that of the host fluid. This led to heatingofa thin boundary layer of the host fluid, lowering the viscosityof the host fluid adjacent to the fountain and thus allowingadditional mixing between the fluids. This effect was most obviousin the experiment with the highest viscosity ratio (1229) wherea small amount of mixing was detected, compared with no mixingin the equivalent experiment in the first series. The criterion for mixing, wd> kv2 can be applied to naturalmagmas. The results show that if a primitive basaltic magmais injected, as a turbulent fountain or plume, into a chambercontaining fractionated basaltic magma, the two magmas willmix readily. However, if basaltic magma is injected into a chambercontaining granitic melt, little or no mixing occurs.  相似文献

Macquarie Island is an exposure above sea-level of part of thecrest of the Macquarie Ridge. The ridge marks the Australia–Pacificplate boundary south of New Zealand, where the plate boundaryhas evolved progressively since Eocene times from an oceanicspreading system into a system of long transform faults linkedby short spreading segments, and currently into a right-lateralstrike-slip plate boundary. The rocks of Macquarie Island wereformed during spreading at this plate boundary in Miocene times, and include intrusive rocks (mantle and cumulate peridotites, gabbros, sheeted dolerite dyke complexes), volcanic rocks (N-to E-MORB pillow lavas, picrites, breccias, hyaloclastites),and associated sediments. A set of Macquarie Island basalticglasses has been analysed by electron microprobe for major elements,S, Cl and F; by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy forH2O; by laser ablation–inductively coupled plasma massspectrometry for trace elements; and by secondary ion mass spectrometryfor Sr, Nd and Pb isotopes. An outstanding compositional featureof the data set (47·4–51·1 wt % SiO2, 5·65–8·75wt % MgO) is the broad range of K2O (0·1–1·8wt %) and the strong positive covariation of K2O with otherincompatible minor and trace elements (e.g. TiO2 0·97–2·1%;Na2O 2·4–4·3%; P2O5 0·08–0·7%;H2O 0·25–1·5%; La 4·3–46·6ppm). The extent of enrichment in incompatible elements in glassescorrelates positively with isotopic ratios of Sr (87Sr/86Sr= 0·70255–0·70275) and Pb (206Pb/204Pb =18·951–19·493; 207Pb/204Pb = 15·528–15·589;208Pb/204Pb = 38·523–38·979), and negativelywith Nd (143Nd/144Nd = 0·51310–0·51304).Macquarie Island basaltic glasses are divided into two compositionalgroups according to their mg-number–K2O relationships.Near-primitive basaltic glasses (Group I) have the highest mg-number(63–69), and high Al2O3 and CaO contents at a given K2Ocontent, and carry microphenocrysts of primitive olivine (Fo86–89·5).Their bulk compositions are used to calculate primary melt compositionsin equilibrium with the most magnesian Macquarie Island olivines(Fo90·5). Fractionated, Group II, basaltic glasses aresaturated with olivine + plagioclase ± clinopyroxene, and have lower mg-number (57–67), and relatively low Al2O3and CaO contents. Group I glasses define a seriate variationwithin the compositional spectrum of MORB, and extend the compositionalrange from N-MORB compositions to enriched compositions thatrepresent a new primitive enriched MORB end-member. Comparedwith N-MORB, this new end-member is characterized by relativelylow contents of MgO, FeO, SiO2 and CaO, coupled with high contentsof Al2O3, TiO2, Na2O, P2O5, K2O and incompatible trace elements, and has the most radiogenic Sr and Pb regional isotope composition. These unusual melt compositions could have been generated bylow-degree partial melting of an enriched mantle peridotitesource, and were erupted without significant mixing with commonN-MORB magmas. The mantle in the Macquarie Island region musthave been enriched and heterogeneous on a very fine scale. Wesuggest that the mantle enrichment implicated in this studyis more likely to be a regional signature that is shared bythe Balleny Islands magmatism than directly related to the hypotheticalBalleny plume itself. Enthalpies of solution have been measured on a series of muscovite—paragonitemicas in 20.1% HF at 50C under isoperibolic conditions. Themolar enthalpy of formation of paragonite at 298 K, for whichno calorimetrically measured value is currently available, hasbeen determined to be –5937.5 (3) kJ. An inversion ofall calorimetric, volumetric and phase equilibrium data hasbeen performed, giving a range of mixing models compatible withmost experimental data. The following expressions of the mixingproperties of 2M1 micas for enthalpy (Hex) and volume (Vex)at pressures up to 10 kbar, forcing excess entropy (Sex) tobe zero and using a subregular mixing model are favoured: Hex(kJ) = [10.6+4.45(1–2Xms)]Xms(1–Xms) Vex(J/bar) = 0.452Xms(1–Xms). However, mixing models of higher order with asymmetric negativeSex are also possible. KEY WORDS: muscovite; paragonite; solvus; calorimetry; solid solution *Corresponding author.  相似文献
