Carbonate-rich, SiO2-poor residua are developed in some kimberlites solidifying as ocelli, layers, or discrete dikes which satisfy petrographic definitions of carbonatite. Arguments that these rocks have mineralogies, antecedents, and comagmatic rocks differing from those of the carbonatites in alkaline rock complexes, including the specific observation that kimberlites and carbonatites contain ilmenites and spinels of different composition, have been used to refute the alleged kimberlite-carbonatite relationship. New microprobe analyses of ilmenites and spinels from carbonate-rich rocks associated with kimberlites in three South African localities correspond to spinels and ilmenites of carbonatites from alkalic complexes, or have characteristics intermediate between those of carbonatites and kimberlites. The ilmenites are distinguished from kimberlite ilmenites by higher MnO, FeTiO3, and Nb2O5, and by negligible Cr2O3. The spinels are distinguished from kimberlite spinels by their Al2O3 and Cr2O3 contents. There is clearly a genetic relationship between the kimberlites and the carbonate-rich rocks, despite the observation that their ilmenites and spinels are distinctly different, which indicates that the same observation is not a valid argument against a petrogenetic relationship between kimberlites and carbonatites. These rocks are among the diverse products from mantle processes influenced by CO2, and we believe that the petrogenetic links among them are forged in the upper mantle. We see insufficient justification to deny the name carbonatite to carbonate-rich rocks associated with kimberlites if they satisfy the petrographic definition in terms of major mineralogy.

Metamorphic rocks at Milos are known in small outcrops beneath the volcanic formations, as xenoliths in the Traphores volcanic breccia and as pebbles in the Paleochora Quaternary deposits. These rocks seem to belong to three different metamorphic units which probably have intricate relationships in the basement: — the eclogites unit shows garnetjadeite or garnet-omphacite primary associations, with apparently late crystallization of lawsonite phenoblasts an recrystallization features at relatively low temperatures; — the glaucophane schist unit exhibits Jadeite+quartz or glaucophane+lawsonite primary mineralogy; — the greenschist facies unit shows low-pressure main assemblages, most generally developed after high-pressure events. The two former units involve tholeiitic meta-igneous rocks, having been spilitized before metamorphism; they generally suffered more or less advanced recrystallization features in the low-pressure field of the greenschist facies. The third unit shows only meta-sedimentary rocks, with the sole exception of one single meta-doleritic pebble having calk-alkaline affinities.Petrological and mineralogical studies, based upon 15 bulk-rock compositions and 178 probe-analysed data points, lead to suspect at least 2, perhaps 3, different metamorphic events rather than one single metamorphic evolution, to account for the 3 U distinguished. From the observation of the mineralogical assemblages and their evolution, the former events (stages 1 and 2) could be related to rapid subduction of ocean-floor or back-arc basalts, whereas, during the latter event (stage 3), the rocks experienced crystallization conditions involving both decreasing pressures and increasing temperatures.

Sea water basalt interaction in spilites from the Iberian Pyrite Belt
Low grade hydrothermally metamorphosed mafic rocks from the Iberian Pyrite Belt are enriched in 18O relative to the oxygen isotopic ratio of fresh basalt (+6.5±1). The observed 18O whole rock values range from +0.87 to +15.71 corresponding to positive isotopic shifts of +5 to +10, thus requiring isotopic exchange with fluids under conditions of high water:rock ratios at low temperatures. The lowest 18O observed corresponds to an albitized dolerite still and is compatible with independent geochemical data suggesting lower water: rock ratios for the alteration of these rocks. The isotope data are consistent with the hypothesis that the spilites from the Pyrite Belt were produced by interaction of basaltic material with sea water.Significant leaching of transition metals from the mafic rocks during alteration coupled with available sulphur isotopic data for the sulphide ores also suggest that sea water may have played an important role in the formation of ore deposits in the Iberian Pyrite Belt.

The Gibeon cluster of Namibian kimberlites is emplaced into the Orange River Belt which has accreted to the Kaapvaal Craton. These offcraton kimberlites lack diamonds and are younger than the diamondiferous on-craton kimberlites. The Hanaus-I and Louwrensia kimberlites each contain a bimodal suite of upper-mantle-derived garnet lherzolite xenoliths characterized by a coarse granular or mosaic porphyroclastic texture. The Louwrensia pipe in addition contains garnet harzburgites. Deformed lherzolites are not iron-enriched relative to the coarse types. Conditions of equilibration calculated by the Wells-Wood method are 841–1,013° C at 25.6–36.3 kbars, and 869–1,195° C at 23.9–39.4 kbars, for coarse lherzolites from Louwrensia and Hanaus respectively, and from 1,080–1,112° C at 31.6–34.5 kbars, and 983–1,228° C at 24.7–35.2 kbars, for mosaic porphyroclastic types from Louwrensia and Hanaus respectively. The coarse varieties from both localities have similar equilibration conditions to coarse lherzolites from on-craton kimberlites and define the lower limb of a perturbed geotherm. The upper high temperature limb of the Namibian geotherm is considered to be an apparent geotherm generated by the deformation and metasomatism of the upper mantle by a rising diapir. Such geotherms, being the result of kimberlite-xenolith interactions, provide no stratigraphic or thermal information concerning the site of kimberlite or diamond formation.

Dalradian metamorphic rocks, Lower Ordovician meta-igneous rocks (MGS) and Caledonian granites of the Connemara complex in SW Connemara all show intense retrograde alteration. Alteration primarily involves sericitization and saussuritization of plagioclase, the alteration of biotite and hornblende to chlorite and the formation of secondary epidote. The alteration is associated with sealed microcracks in all rocks and planes of secondary fluid inclusions in quartz where it occurs, and was the result of a phase of fluid influx into these rocks. In hand specimen K-feldspar becomes progressively reddened with increasing alteration. Mineralogical alteration in the MGS and Caledonian granites took place at temperatures 275±15°C and in the MGS Pfluid is estimated to be 1.5 kbar during alteration. The °D values of alteration phases are:-18 to-29 (fluid inclusions),-47 to-61 (chlorites) and-11 to-31 (epidotes). Chlorite 18O values are +0.2 to +4.3, while 18O values for quartz-K-feldspar pairs show both positively sloped (MGS) and highly unusual negatively sloped (Caledonian granites) arrays, diverging from the normal magmatic field on a - plot. The stable isotope data show that the fluid that caused retrogression continued to be present in most rocks until temperatures fell to 200–140°C. The retrograde fluid had D -20 to-30 in all lithologies, but the fluid 18O varied both spatially and temporally within the range-4 to +7. The fO2 of the fluid that deposited the epidotes in the MGS varied with its 18O value, with the most 18O-depleted fluid being the most oxidizing. The D values, together with low (<0) 18O values for the retrograde fluid in some lithologies indicate that this fluid was of meteoric origin. This meteoric fluid was probably responsible for the alteration in all lithologies during a single phase of fluid infiltration. The variation in retrograde fluid 18O values is attributed to the effects of variable oxygen isotope shifting of this meteoric fluid by fluid-rock interaction. Infiltration of meteoric fluid into this area was most likely accomplished by convection of pore fluids around the heat anomaly of the Galway granite soon after intrusion at 400 Ma. However convective circulation of meteoric water and mineralogical alteration could possible have occurred considerably later.

Some results of biogeographic research on meadows in the Dyje-Svratka basin in the Czech Republic. The paper shows one example of biogeographic inventory of natural ecosystems in an unflooded meadow in the Dyje-Svratka basin. It is part of the complex physio-geographic research of the Geographic Department of the Masaryk University in Brno aimed at gaining a basis for territorial interpretation of ecological regularities and territorial application of general ecological optimizing principles. A segment of biocenosis of Ulmi-fraxineta carpini has been analyzed (Zlatník 1956).The endeavour of Czech geographers to study geosystems of various dimensions completely gets in the limelight. In question is the understanding of mutual relationship of components of geosystems based on the exchange of mass and energy. There are two ways of studying them: spatial relations or approaches concentrated on processes. In contrast to the above unilateral concept, the endeavour to make the approaches compatible appears rarely. This complex view is made possible by geobiocenologically taken biogeography in papers of Zlatník and Rauer, their students and successors. This paper shows only one example of the results of biogeographic stock-taking of meadows in the Dyje-Svratka basin, indicating relations of eco- and geosystems which confirm the necessity of ecological orientation of the present biogeography and its potential contribution to ecology.

Integrated petrologic and Sm–Nd isotopic studies in garnet amphibolites along the Salmon River suture zone, western Idaho, delineate two periods of amphibolite grade metamorphism separated by at least 16 million years. In one amphibolite,P–T studies indicate a single stage of metamorphism with final equilibration at 600°C and 8–9 kbar. The Sm–Nd isotopic compositions of plagioclase, apatite, hornblende, and garnet define a precise, 8-point isochron of 128±3 Ma (MSWD=1.2) interpreted as mineral growth at the metamorphic peak. A40Ar/39Ar age for this hornblende indicates cooling through 525°C at 119±2 Ma. In a nearby amphibolite, garnets with a two-stage growth history consist of inclusion-rich cores surrounded by discontinuous, inclusion-free overgrowths. Temporal constraints for core and overgrowth development were derived from Sm–Nd garnet — whole rock pairs in which the garnet fractions consist of varying proportions of inclusion-free to inclusion-bearing fragments. Three garnet fractions with apparent ages of 144, 141, and 136 Ma are thought to represent mixtures between late Jurassic (pre-144 Ma) inherited radiogenic components preserved within garnet cores and early Cretaceous (128 Ma) garnet overgrowths. These observations confirm the resilience of garnet to diffusive exchange of trace elements during polymetamorphism at amphibolite facies conditions. Our geochronologic results show that metamorphism of arc-derived rocks in western Idaho was episodic and significantly older than in arc rocks along the eastern margin of the Wrangellian Superterrane in British Columbia and Alaska. The pre-144 Ma event may be an expression of the late Jurassic amalgamation of marginal oceanic arc-related terranes (e.g., Olds Ferry, Baker, Wallowa) during the initial phases of their collision with North American rocks. Peak metamorphism at 128 Ma reflects tectonic burial along the leading edge of the Wallowa arc terrane during its final penetration and suturing to cratonic North America.

Two xenoliths of garnet harzburgite from the Finsch kimberlite, South Africa, have been found to contain diamond. One of the xenoliths has mineral compositions typical of low-T coarse textured garned peridotites, whereas minerals in the other are similar but not identical to most peridotite-suite minerals included in diamonds, especially in the low-CaO content of garnet. Geothermobarometric calculations show both xenoliths equilibrated at temperatures above 1,100°C and pressures>55 kbar, which is near the low-pressure end of the range of equilibration conditions for diamond-free garnet lherzolites and garnet harzburgites from Finsch. The chemistries of the minerals in the two rocks are distinctly different to most of the mineral inclusions in Finsch diamonds. This, as well as the different 13C compositions between xenolith diamonds (-2.8 to-4.6) and diamonds in the kimberlite (generally<-4.3) suggest different origins or sources for the diamonds.

A low-angle thrust fault places high-PT granulites (hangingwall) of the Internal Zone of the Neoproterozoic Brasília Belt (Tocantins Province, central Brazil) in contact with a lower-grade footwall (External Zone) comprised of nappes of distal passive margin- and back-arc basin-related supracrustals. The footwall units were emplaced at  750 Ma onto proximal sedimentary rocks (Paranoá Group) of the São Francisco paleo-continent passive margin. The high-PT belt is comprised of 645–630 Ma granulite-facies paragneiss and orthogneiss, and mafic–ultramafic complexes that include three major layered intrusions and metavolcanic rocks granulitized at  750 Ma. These complexes occur within lower-grade metasedimentary rocks in the hangingwall of the Maranhão River Thrust, which forms the Internal Zone–External Zone boundary fault to the north of the Pirineus Zone of High Strain. Detailed lithostructural studies carried out in Maranhão River Thrust hangingwall and footwall metasedimentary rocks between the Niquelândia and Barro Alto complexes, and also to the east of these, indicate the same lithotypes and Sm–Nd isotopic signatures, and the same D1D2 progressive deformation and greenschist-facies metamorphism. Additionally, footwall metasedimentary rocks exclusively display a post-D2 deformation indicating that the Maranhão River Thrust propagated through upper crustal rocks of the Paranoá Group relatively late during the tectonic evolution of the belt. Fault propagation was a consequence of intraplate underthrusting during granulite exhumation. The results allow for a better tectonic understanding of the Brasília Belt and the Tocantins Province, as well as explaining the presence of the Pirineus Zone of High Strain.

Graphite occurs in two distinct textural varieties in syntectonic granitoids of the New Hampshire Plutonic Series and in associated metasedimentary wall rocks. Textural characteristics indicate that coarse graphite flakes were present at an early stage of crystallization of the igneous rocks and thus may represent xenocrystic material assimilated from the wall rocks. The range of 13C values determined for flake graphite in the igneous rocks (–26.5 to –13.8) overlaps the range for flake graphite in the wall rocks (–26.0 to –16.7), and spatial correlation of some 13C values in the plutons and wall rocks supports the assimilation mechanism. The textures of fine-grained irregular aggregates or spherulites of graphite, on the other hand, indicate that they formed along with secondary hydrous silicates and carbonates during retrograde reactions between the primary silicates and a carbon-bearing aqueous fluid phase. Relative to coexisting flake graphite, spherulitic graphite shows isotopic shifts ranging from 1.9 higher to 1.4 lower in both igneous and metasedimentary samples. The observed isotopic shifts and the association of spherulitic graphite with hydrous silicates are explained by dehydration of C-O-H fluids initially on or near the graphite saturation boundary. Hydration of silicates causes dehydration of the fluid and drives the fluid composition to the graphite saturation surface. Continued dehydration of the fluid then requires coprecipitation of secondary graphite and hydrous silicates and drives the fluid toward either higher or lower CO2/CH4 depending upon the inital bulk composition. Isotopic shifts in graphite formed at successive reaction stages are explained by fractionation of 13C between secondary graphite and the evolving fluid because 13C is preferentially concentrated into CO2 relative to CH4.Epigenetic graphite in two vein deposits assiciated with the contacts of these igneous rocks is generally enriched in 13C (–15.7 to –11.6) relative to both the igneous and wall-rock 13C values. Values of 13C vary by up to 3.4 within veins, with samples taken only 3 cm apart differing by 2.0 These variations in 13C correlate with textural evidence showing sequential deposition of different generations of graphite in the veins from fluids which differed in proportions of carbon species or isotopic composition (or both).

Summary The investigated Al-phosphate- and Al-borosilicate-bearing metaquartzite horizon belongs to the Middle Proterozoic Serra de Vereda member of the São Marcos Formation of the northern Espinhaço fold belt. Outcrops are located in the NNW–SSE trending hills of the Serra de Canas/Cana Brava (Northern Serra do Espinhaço, State of Bahia, NE Brazil) about 10km west of the town of Boquira. Sky blue lazulite and deep blue to lilac dumortierite are enriched in layers which sometimes show relic cross bedding. The occurrence of hematite patches and layers is typical. In rocks of type A, phosphorus contents range from 1.89wt.% to 10.73wt.% P2O5 and boron contents are mostly below 10ppm whereas in the rocks of type B phosphorus contents are below 1% and boron contents reach 2600ppm with a mean value of 1139ppm. REE distribution patterns of rocks are predominantly controlled by the amount of xenotime, monazite and zircon. Oxygen thermometry on quartz and hematite and the stability of kyanite, augelite, trolleite and berlinite allow to estimate the minimum metamorphic peak P-T conditions at 475°C and 3.8kbar i.e. within the stability field of scorzalite–lazulite and dumortierite. The association of Al-phosphates with hematite layers provides evidence for the deposition of the metaquartzite protolith in a seawater-fed sabkha-like sand flat fringing the Espinhaço rift. It is proposed that apatite, Al-phosphates and Al-borosilicates were chemically precipitated together with iron hydroxides from pore fluids. The antithetic behaviour of phosphorus and boron contents in the metaquartzites is the consequence of an influx of toxic boron-rich water that drastically affected algae populations and consequently reduced phosphorus precipitation.

The basins of Baja Verapaz, Guatemala belong to an old zone of depression to be traced as far as the Puerto Rico Trough. They are not controlled, however, by actual tectonic events as to their present pattern. Their sedimentary filling made up of pumice in different stages of reworking, and besides morphology give rise to considerations in regional as well as general geology.

Several banded bodies of the Valencia de las Torres Formation in the Azuaga Group (Badajoz-Cordoba axis) are defined as trondhjemites. Principal component analysis of major elements shows that the chemical variability of the samples is compatible with a single differentiation process. Systematic study of their petrography and chemistry points to trondhjemite-tonalite series belonging to high grade metamorphic belts and their generation is postulated as being due to partial melting of a tholeite in a subduction zone, for which a hercynian age is suggested.

The Luziânia gold deposits in southern Goiás lie within the Late Proterozoic Brasília fold belt. The rocks that host the gold mineralization are a monotonous series of hydrothermally altered phyllites that have been subject to low grade regional metamorphism. The major controls on the gold mineralization are northeast trending and gently northwest dipping ductile-brittle, dextral-reverse shear zones associated with regional thin-skinned thrusting of the Canastra Group. From a preliminary fluid inclusion study it is deduced that low salinity, 7 eq. wt% NaCl, moderately dense, H2O-CO2 ± CH4 ore fluids deposited gold at temperatures of 300 ± 75°C and pressures of 1.5 to 3 kb in the filling stage of the vein formation. Post-filling stage gold deposition probably occured by mixing of fluids at higher crustal levels (1.5–2 kb). During thrusting, prograde metamorphism released pore water which penetrated along thrust planes that acted as high permeability zones for the ponding and release, by hydraulic fracturing, of overpressured fluids. Later in the tectonic evolution and at shallower crustal levels, there was likely an incursion of near suface water into the fault zone.

The northern Cyrenaic headland situated north of 32 degrees latitude between Benghází and Tubruq was subject of a geological mapping. This paper draws attention to the results of this geological survey concerning Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary facies development, paleogeography, tectonic and geomorphologic evolution. The essential part of the investigated area corresponds to Jabal al Akhdar (Green Mountains), a gently uparched plateau built of Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments (mostly limestones, subordinate dolomites and marls). These sediments were deposited at the southern margin of the Tethys sea and were moderately folded, mainly during the intra-Senonian (pre-Campanian) and early Ypresian intervals. From Middle Eocene till Middle Miocene, the area was subject to a slight warping followed by oscillating transgressions of a shallow sea.The youngest tectonic movements resulted in a gentle doming of the area associated with downfaulting of certain zones. Some prominent faults revealed rejuvenated activity, partly with movement inversion. Deep faulting probably controlled the paleogeographic and tectonic development of certain zones. The present gross geomorphology of Jabal al Akhdar roughly corresponds to its final uparching dated after the Middle Miocene. Topographic evolution of the northern slope of the mountains has been importantly influenced by marine erosion. Two broad littoral terraces bordered by cliffs were formed successively.

The ( 18O values of nine Cretaceous granitic rocks from the low P/T type regional metamorphic zone of Japan are +10.0 to +13.2 relative to SMOW, while ten Cretaceous granitic rocks from the non-metamorphic zone are +7.9 to +9.8. The 18O-enrichment in the former rocks is mainly attributed to oxygen isotopic exchange between the granitic magma and the surrounding metamorphic rocks during regional metamorphism. The assimilation of 18O-rich country rocks is also possible in the cases such as gneissose granite and migmatite. The oxygen isotopic ratios of quartz-biotite pairs in the granitic rocks indicate that they are isotopically in near-equilibrium with each other. The quartz-biotite isotopic equilibrium temperatures estimated for these rocks range from 550° to 670° C. Feldspar is occasionally isotopically in disequilibrium with other minerals. This may be caused by exchange of oxygen isotopes between feldspar and hydrothermal or meteoric water after crystallization.

Summary Due to an isotope fractionation involved in the bacterial reduction of marine sulfate the sediments as a whole contain an excess of32S (34S – 5), while marine sulfate is enriched in34S. Recent seawater has 34S + 20. Evaporite measurements indicate a still higher value in Cambrian, Silurian and Devonian time. Then the 34S decreased to about + 11 in the Upper Permian and later on increased once more to the modern value. The accumulation of abnormally large quantities of biogenic sulfides in the slates of that era accounts for the high 34S value in the early Palaeozoic. A considerable fraction of light sulfur has been brought back to the oceans by weathering solutions of the Caledonian and Variscan orogenies, and in Mesozoic times another accumulation of slates has taken place. From a synopsis of the data available (some 800) and from model estimations an attempt has been made to construct the marine sulfur gd34S evolution curve. Some practical consequences are lined out: informations on material balance of geological processes, interpretation of 34S-data of normal rocks and ores, sample dating in the case of doubtful age.

The Eastern Cordillera of Bolivia is composed of Early Paleozoic sedimentary rocks, which locally are overlain by younger ones. South of Zudáñez (Depto. Chuquisaca) a Late Paleozoic syncline has been preserved which consists of the following units: 1. At the base, sandstones of Permo-Carboniferous age (450 m), of which the lower portion exhibits terrestrial, and the upper portion marine characteristics; 2. marine carbonates (20 m) of Early Permian age (Copacabana Formation of Wolfcampian age); 3. siltstones and shales (up to 20 m). On the basis of field work as well as sedimentological and paleontological investigations new concepts on facies distributions and paleogeography of this area have been developed. The sequences of Early Paleozoic sedimentary rocks known from the central part of the Andes (13°-24° S) are presented in a synopsis and compared. The westward extent of the Carboniferous Gondwana glaciation and the eastern boundary of the Permian basin of marine deposition are discussed.

Pelites, carbonate-silicate rocks and mafic rocks occurring at the base of the Helgeland nappe complex northwest of Grong (N. Norway) were subjected together with the crystalline basement to medium grade metamorphism and threefold deformation during Caledonian times.During the first act of deformation temperature increased and reached a maximum of 600–650°C at 6–7 Kb after the cessation of the first deformation event. At the peak of metamorphism granitic, aplitic and pegmatitic rocks were formed.During the second and third acts of deformation the temperature decreased to 500–400°C. Mylonites, formed during the second act of deformation, indicate that there was nappe movement from NW to SE. Simple shearing with direction of the main elongation parallel to the fold axes was associated with the second deformation. During the third deformation simple shearing also occurred. However, elongation took place oblique to the fold axes and the sense of rotation was opposite to that of the second deformation.
