We analytically determine the structure of highly magnetized astrophysical jets at the origin in a region where the flow has been already collimated by an external medium, in both relativistic and non-relativistic regimes. We show that this can be achieved by solving a system of first-order ordinary differential equations that describe the transversal jet structure for a variety of external confining pressure profiles that collimate the jet to a near-cylindrical configuration. We obtain solutions for a central jet surrounded either by a self-similar wind or by an external pressure profile and derive the dependence of the velocity and the magnetic field strength along and across our jets. In particular, we find that the central core in a jet – the part of a flow with a nearly homogeneous magnetic field – must contain a poloidal field which is not much smaller than the critical value B min. This allows us to determine the magnetic flux in a core which is much smaller than the total magnetic flux. We show that for such a small core flux the solutions with a magnetic field in a core much smaller than B min are non-physical. For astrophysical objects the value of the critical magnetic field is quite large: 1 G for active galactic nuclei, 1010 G for gamma-ray bursts and 10−1 G for young stellar objects. In a relativistic case for the core field greater than or of the order of B min we show analytically that the plasma Lorentz factor must grow linearly with the cylindrical radius. For non-relativistic highly magnetized jets we propose that an oblique shock exists near the base of the jet so that the finite gas pressure plays an important role in force balance.  相似文献

We search for ongoing major dry mergers in a well-selected sample of local brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) from the C4 cluster catalogue. 18 out of 515 early-type BCGs with redshift between 0.03 and 0.12 are found to be in major dry mergers, which are selected as pairs (or triples) with r -band magnitude difference  δ m r < 1.5  and projected separation   r p < 30 kpc  , and showing signatures of interaction in the form of significant asymmetry in residual images. We find that the fraction of BCGs in major dry mergers increases with the richness of the clusters, consistent with the fact that richer clusters usually have more massive (or luminous) BCGs. We estimate that present-day early-type BCGs may have experienced on average  ∼0.6 ( t merge/0.3 Gyr)−1  major dry mergers and through this process increases their luminosity (mass) by 15 per cent  ( t merge/0.3 Gyr)−1 ( f mass/0.5)  on average since   z = 0.7  , where t merge is the merging time-scale and f mass is the mean mass fraction of companion galaxies added to the central ones. We also find that major dry mergers do not seem to elevate radio activities in BCGs. Our study shows that major dry mergers involving BCGs in clusters of galaxies are not rare in the local Universe, and they are an important channel for the formation and evolution of BCGs.  相似文献

The stochasticity in the distribution of dark haloes in the cosmic density field is reflected in the distribution function   P V ( N h| δ m)  , which gives the probability of finding N h haloes in a volume V with mass density contrast δ m. We study the properties of this function using high-resolution N -body simulations, and find that   P V ( N h| δ m)  is significantly non-Poisson. The ratio between the variance and the mean goes from ∼1 (Poisson) at  1+ δ m≪1  to <1 (sub-Poisson) at  1+ δ m∼1  to >1 (super-Poisson) at  1+ δ m≫1  . The mean bias relation is found to be well described by halo bias models based on the Press–Schechter formalism. The sub-Poisson variance can be explained as a result of halo exclusion, while the super-Poisson variance at high δ m may be explained as a result of halo clustering. A simple phenomenological model is proposed to describe the behaviour of the variance as a function of δ m. Galaxy distribution in the cosmic density field predicted by semi-analytic models of galaxy formation shows similar stochastic behaviour. We discuss the implications of the stochasticity in halo bias to the modelling of higher order moments of dark haloes and of galaxies.  相似文献

In the neutron-rich internal shocks model for γ-ray bursts (GRBs), the Lorentz factors (LFs) of ion shells are variable, and so are the LFs of accompanying neutron shells. For slow neutron shells with a typical LF of approximate tens, the typical β-decay radius is  ∼1014–1015 cm  . As GRBs last long enough  [ T 90 > 14(1 + z ) s]  , one earlier but slower ejected neutron shell will be swept successively by later ejected ion shells in the range  ∼1013–1015 cm  , where slow neutrons have decayed significantly. Part of the thermal energy released in the interaction will be given to the electrons. These accelerated electrons will mainly be cooled by the prompt soft γ-rays and give rise to GeV emission. This kind of GeV emission is particularly important for some very long GRBs and is detectable for the upcoming satellite Gamma-Ray Large Area Space Telescope (GLAST).  相似文献

We report the possible detection of V4334 Sgr (Sakurai's Object) at 450 and 850 μm with SCUBA on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope. The submillimetre photometry, combined with a  1–5 μm  spectrum and  8–10 μm  photometry obtained nearly contemporaneously, suggests that the submillimetre emission originates in material ejected during the 1995 event. The dust mass is a  few×10-7 M  , the average mass-loss in the form of dust is  few×10-8 M yr-1  , and the integrated luminosity is  log( L /L)=3.66  for a distance of 2 kpc. The ejected shell had angular diameter ∼55 mas in 2001 August, and should by now be resolvable in the mid-infrared by  8–10 m  class telescopes.  相似文献

We present the results of a CCD Johnson V and photoelectric Strömgren uvbyβ photometric study of the recently discovered multiperiodic δ Sct star GSC 2683-3076. Our data set mainly consists of 2874 differential measurements in V together with a few data collected into the uvbyβ system. Additional unfiltered CCD measurements were also carried out. A set of seven best-fitting pulsation frequencies representing the light variations of the variable has been detected. The spectral type of the variable is found to be A9V or F0V. Using the uvbyβ indices the following main physical parameters for the variable have been derived: T eff=7230 K , M V =1.95 mag , log  g =3.90 , M =1.85 M , R =2.30 R , ρ =0.16  ρ , age =1.0 Gyr , metal abundance [Me/H]=0.16 and distance modulus =8.4 mag . GSC 2683-3076 is found to be a Population I δ Sct star, slightly metal-enriched, evolving on its main-sequence stage. A mixture of radial and non-radial modes seems to be present in the pulsation of this variable. This star is also known as H133 in the young open cluster NGC 6871, however arguments are given that address this star as a non-member of the cluster. The uvbyβ photometry available in the literature for NGC 6871 is also discussed.  相似文献

When the total angular momentum of a binary system is at a critical (minimum) value, a tidal instability occurs (Darwin's instability), eventually forcing the stars to merge into a single, rapidly rotating object. The instability sets in at some critical separation which in the case of contact binaries corresponds to a minimum mass ratio depending on dimensionless gyration radius k 1. If one considers   n = 3  polytrope (fully radiative primary with  Γ1= 4/3  ),   k 21= 0.075  and   q min≈ 0.085–0.095  . There appears to be, however, some W UMa-type binaries with q values very close, if not below these theoretical limits, implying that primary in these systems is probably more centrally condensed. We try to solve the discrepancy between theory and observations by considering rotating polytropes. We show by deriving and solving a modified Lane–Emden equation for   n = 3  polytrope that including the effects of rotation does increase the central concentration and could reduce   q min  to as low as 0.070–0.074, more consistent with the observed population.  相似文献

In order to interpret H2 quasar absorption-line observations of damped Lyα systems (DLAs) and subDLAs, we model their H2 abundance as a function of dust-to-gas ratio, including H2 self-shielding and dust extinction against dissociating photons. Then, we constrain the physical state of the gas by using H2 data. Using H2 excitation data for DLAs with H2 detections, we derive a gas density  1.5 ≲ log n (cm−3) ≲ 2.5  , temperature  1.5 ≲ log T (K) ≲ 3  , and an internal ultraviolet (UV) radiation field (in units of the Galactic value)  0.5 ≲ log χ≲ 1.5  . We then find that the observed relation between the molecular fraction and the dust-to-gas ratio of the sample is naturally explained by the above conditions. However, it is still possible that H2 deficient DLAs and subDLAs with H2 fractions less than  ∼10−6  are in a more diffuse and warmer state. The efficient photodissociation by the internal UV radiation field explains the extremely small H2 fraction  (≲10−6)  observed for  κ≲ 1/30  (κ is the dust-to-gas ratio in units of the Galactic value); H2 self-shielding causes a rapid increase in, and large variations of, H2 abundance for  κ≳ 1/30  . We finally propose an independent method to estimate the star formation rates of DLAs from H2 abundances; such rates are then critically compared with those derived from other proposed methods. The implications for the contribution of DLAs to the cosmic star formation history are briefly discussed.  相似文献

We analyse 147 h of single-site CCD time series photometry of the multiperiodic low-amplitude δ Scuti star XX Pyx with the aim of investigating variability at low frequencies. Part of the data were obtained in the context of the 1998 multisite campaign on XX Pyx, the results of which were described by Handler et al. We find that periodic low-frequency variations are present in the XX Pyx light curves, and we detect two frequencies at f A=0.8695 cycle d−1 and f B=1.7352 cycle d−1 , respectively, with amplitudes of 4.5 and 5.4 mmag. The low-frequency variability is intrinsic to XX Pyx, and cannot be attributed to instrumental or atmospheric effects. The near 2:1 ratio of the frequencies leads us to suggest that XX Pyx is a δ Scuti star in a binary system, with a possible binary period of 27.6 h. This is strongly supported by the detection of radial velocity variations from the re-analysis of echelle spectra obtained by Handler et al. However, in the absence of a spectroscopic period, alternative explanations of the photometric variability involving pulsation are also possible; the variations occur close to possible combination frequencies of the short-period ( δ Scuti) variations, but high Q values of 0.57 and 0.28 d suggest that the variations are not a result of normal (p-)modes. They could possibly be due to g-modes excited to observable amplitudes as a result of resonance effects. Surface features (spots) are unlikely to be the cause of the variations.
We searched for combination frequencies (  f i − f j ) , f being the normal δ Scuti frequencies detected by Handler et al., but failed to detect any.  相似文献

We suggest a new way to establish the relation between the electron temperature t 3 within the [O  iii ] zone and the electron temperature t 2 within the [O  ii ] zone in high-metallicity  (12 + log(O/H) > 8.25)  H  ii regions. The   t 2– t 3  diagram is constructed by applying our method to a sample of 372 H  ii regions. We find that the correlation between t 2 and t 3 is tight and can be approximated by a linear expression. The new   t 2– t 3  relation can be used to determine t 2 and accurate abundances in high-metallicity H  ii regions with a measured t 3. It can also be used in conjunction with the ff relation for the determination of t 3 and t 2 and oxygen abundances in high-metallicity H  ii regions, where the [O  iii ]λ4363 auroral line is not detected. The derived   t 2– t 3  relation is independent of photoionization models of H  ii regions.  相似文献

We use the spherical collapse (SC) approximation to derive expressions for the smoothed redshift-space probability distribution function (PDF), as well as the p -order hierarchical amplitudes S p , in both real and redshift space. We compare our results with numerical simulations, focusing on the     standard CDM model, where redshift distortions are strongest. We find good agreement between the SC predictions and the numerical PDF in real space even for     , where σ L is the linearly evolved rms fluctuation on the smoothing scale. In redshift space, reasonable agreement is possible only for     . Numerical simulations also yield a simple empirical relation between the real-space PDF and the redshift-space PDF: we find that for     , the redshift-space PDF, [ P δ ( z )], is, to a good approximation, a simple rescaling of the real-space PDF, P [ δ ], i.e.,     where σ and σ ( z ) are the real-space and redshift-space rms fluctuations, respectively. This result applies well beyond the validity of linear perturbation theory, and it is a good fit for both the standard CDM model and the ΛCDM model. It breaks down for SCDM at     , but provides a good fit to the ΛCDM models for σ L as large as 0.8.  相似文献

In this paper we develop further the model for the migration of planets introduced in Del Popolo et al. We first model the protoplanetary nebula as a time-dependent accretion disc, and find self-similar solutions to the equations of the accretion disc that give us explicit formulae for the spatial structure and the temporal evolution of the nebula. These equations are then used to obtain the migration rate of the planet in the planetesimal disc, and to study how the migration rate depends on the disc mass, on its time evolution and on some values of the dimensionless viscosity parameter α . We find that planets that are embedded in planetesimal discs, having total mass of  10-4-0.1 M  , can migrate inward a large distance for low values of α (e.g.,   α ≃10-3-10-2)  and/or large disc mass, and can survive only if the inner disc is truncated or because of tidal interaction with the star. Orbits with larger a are obtained for smaller values of the disc mass and/or for larger values of α . This model may explain several orbital features of the recently discovered giant planets orbiting nearby stars.  相似文献

We present results from a numerical study of the runaway instability of thick discs around black holes. This instability is an important issue for most models of cosmic gamma-ray bursts, where the central engine responsible for the initial energy release is such a system consisting of a thick disc surrounding a black hole. We have carried out a comprehensive number of time-dependent simulations aimed at exploring the appearance of the instability. Our study has been performed using a fully relativistic hydrodynamics code. The general relativistic hydrodynamic equations are formulated as a hyperbolic flux-conservative system and solved using a suitable Godunov-type scheme. We build a series of constant angular momentum discs around a Schwarzschild black hole. Furthermore, the self-gravity of the disc is neglected and the evolution of the central black hole is assumed to be that of a sequence of exact Schwarzschild black holes of varying mass. The black hole mass increase is thus determined by the mass accretion rate across the event horizon. In agreement with previous studies based on stationary models, we find that by allowing the mass of the black hole to grow the disc becomes unstable. Our hydrodynamical simulations show that for all disc-to-hole mass ratios considered (between 1 and 0.05), the runaway instability appears very fast on a dynamical time-scale of a few orbital periods, typically a few 10 ms and never exceeding 1 s for our particular choice of the mass of the black hole (2.5 M) and a large range of mass fluxes  ( m 10-3 M s-1)  . The implications of our results in the context of gamma-ray bursts are briefly discussed.  相似文献

We present an analysis of the relative bias between early- and late-type galaxies in the Two-degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) – as defined by the η parameter of Madgwick et al., which quantifies the spectral type of galaxies in the survey. We calculate counts in cells for flux-limited samples of early- and late-type galaxies, using approximately cubical cells with sides ranging from 7 to  42 h −1 Mpc  . We measure the variance of the counts in cells using the method of Efstathiou et al., which we find requires a correction for a finite volume effect equivalent to the integral constraint bias of the autocorrelation function. Using a maximum-likelihood technique we fit lognormal models to the one-point density distribution, and develop methods of dealing with biases in the recovered variances resulting from this technique. We then examine the joint density distribution function,   f (δE, δL)  , and directly fit deterministic bias models to the joint counts in cells. We measure a linear relative bias of ≈1.3, which does not vary significantly with ℓ. A deterministic linear bias model is, however, a poor approximation to the data, especially on small scales  (ℓ≤ 28  h −1 Mpc)  where deterministic linear bias is excluded at high significance. A power-law bias model with index   b 1≈ 0.75  is a significantly better fit to the data on all scales, although linear bias becomes consistent with the data for  ℓ≳ 40  h −1 Mpc  .  相似文献

Recently, Shen et al. have studied the contributions of the curvature effect of fireballs to the spectral lag and have shown that the observed lags can be accounted for by the effect. Here, we check their results by performing a more precise calculation with both formulae presented by Shen et al. and Qin et al. Several other aspects which were not considered by Shen et al. are investigated. We find that in the case of ultrarelativistic motions, both formulae are identical as long as the whole fireball surface is concerned. In our analysis, the previous conclusion that the detected spectral lags can be accounted for by the curvature effect is confirmed, while the conclusion that the lag has no dependence on the radius of fireballs is not true. We find that introducing extreme physical parameters is not the only outlet to explain these observed large lags. Even for the larger lags (∼5 s), a wider local pulse  (Δ t θ,FWHM= 107 s)  can account for it. Some conclusions not presented in Shen et al. or those modified in our analysis are listed below: (i)  lag ∝Γ−ε  with  ε > 2  ; (ii) lag is proportional to the local pulse width and the full width at half-maximum of the observed light curves; (iii) a large lag requires a large α0 and a small β0 as well as a large   E 0,p  ; (iv) when the rest-frame spectrum varies with time, the lag would become larger; (v) lag decreases with the increase of   Rc   ; (vi) lag ∝ E within the certain energy range for a given Lorentz factor; (vii) lag is proportional to the opening angle of uniform jets when  θj < 0.6Γ−1  .  相似文献

We present angular diameters for 42 Luminosity Class (LC) I stars and 32 LC II stars that have been interferometrically determined with the Palomar Testbed Interferometer. Derived values of radius and effective temperature are established for these objects, and an empirical calibration of these parameters for supergiants will be presented as a function of spectral type and colours. For the effective temperature versus  ( V − K )0  colour, we find an empirical calibration with a median deviation of  Δ T = 70 K  in the range of  0.7 < ( V − K )0 < 5.1  for LC I stars; for LC II, the median deviation is  Δ T = 120 K  from  0.4 < ( V − K )0 < 4.3  . Effective temperature as a function of spectral type is also calibrated from these data, but shows significantly more scatter than the T EFF versus  ( V − K )0  relationship. No deviation of T EFF versus spectral type is seen for these high-luminosity objects relative to LC II giants. Directly determined diameters range up to  400 R  , though are limited by poor distance determinations, which dominate the error estimates. These temperature and radii measures reflect a direct calibration of these parameters for supergiants from empirical means.  相似文献

When the total angular momentum of a binary system   J tot= J orb+ J spin  is at a certain critical (minimum) value, a tidal instability occurs which eventually forces the stars to merge into a single, rapidly rotating object. The instability occurs when   J orb= 3 J spin  , which in the case of contact binaries corresponds to a minimum mass ratio   q min≈  0.071–0.078. The minimum mass ratio is obtained under the assumption that stellar radii are fixed and independent. This is not the case with contact binaries where, according to the Roche model, we have   R 2= R 2( R 1, a , q )  . By finding a new criterion for contact binaries, which arises from  d J tot= 0  , and assuming   k 21≠ k 22  for the component's dimensionless gyration radii, a theoretical lower limit   q min= 0.094–0.109  for overcontact degree   f = 0–1  is obtained.  相似文献

We analyse Chandra High Resolution Camera observations of the starburst galaxy M82, concentrating on the most luminous X-ray source. We find a position for the source of         (J2000) with a 1 σ radial error of 0.7 arcsec. The accurate X-ray position shows that the luminous source is neither at the dynamical centre of M82 nor coincident with any suggested radio AGN candidate. The source is highly variable between observations, which suggests that it is a compact object and not a supernova or remnant. There is no significant short-term variability within the observations. Dynamical friction and the off-centre position place an upper bound of 105–106 M on the mass of the object, depending on its age. The X-ray luminosity suggests a compact object mass of at least 500 M. Thus the luminous source in M82 may represent a new class of compact object with a mass intermediate between those of stellar-mass black hole candidates and supermassive black holes.  相似文献

We study the prospects for observing H2 emission during the assembly of primordial molecular cloud kernels. The primordial molecular cloud cores, which resemble those at the present epoch, can emerge around  1+ z ∼20  according to recent numerical simulations. The kernels form inside the cores, and the first stars will appear inside the kernels. A kernel typically contracts to form one of the first generation stars with an accretion rate that is as large as ∼0.01 M yr−1. This occurs owing to the primordial abundances, which result in a kernel temperature of order 1000 K, and the collapsing kernel emits H2 line radiation at a rate ∼1035 erg s−1. Predominantly   J =5-3   ( v =0)  rotational emission of H2 is expected. At redshift  1+ z ∼20  , the expected flux is ∼0.01 μJy for a single kernel. While an individual object is not observable by any facilities available in the near future, the expected assembly of primordial star clusters on subgalactic scales can result in fluxes at the sub-mJy level. This is marginally observable with ASTRO-F and ALMA. We also examine the rotational   J =2-0   ( v =0)  and vibrational   δv =1  emission lines. The former may possibly be detectable with ALMA.  相似文献

We present the results of a spectroscopic multisite campaign for the β Cephei star 12 (DD) Lacertae. Our study is based on more than thousand high-resolution high S/N spectra gathered with eight different telescopes in a time span of 11 months. In addition, we make use of numerous archival spectroscopic measurements. We confirm 10 independent frequencies recently discovered from photometry, as well as harmonics and combination frequencies. In particular, the slowly pulsating B-stars (SPB)-like g -mode with frequency 0.3428 d−1 reported before is detected in our spectroscopy. We identify the four main modes as  (ℓ1, m 1) = (1, 1), (ℓ2, m 2) = (0, 0), (ℓ3, m 3) = (1, 0)  and  (ℓ4, m 4) = (2, 1)  for   f 1= 5.178 964 d−1, f 2= 5.334 224 d−1, f 3= 5.066 316 d−1  and   f 4= 5.490 133 d−1  , respectively. Our seismic modelling shows that f 2 is likely the radial first overtone and that the core overshooting parameter  αov  is lower than 0.4 local pressure scale heights.  相似文献
