Silurian and Devonian chitinozoans and scolecodonts are recorded from strata of the Hida‐Gaien Terrane, central Honshu. Silurian chitinozoans include Eisenackitina, Bursachitina, and the species Angochitina elongata. The latter provides a precise biostratigraphical tie between the Japanese succession and the Type Ludlow Series of the Welsh Borderland, UK, and indicates a Ludlow age (Gorstian or early Ludfordian) for the upper member of the Yoshiki Formation in the Ichinotani Valley. Chitinozoans from other Yoshiki Formation localities contain other specimens of Lagenochitinidae. Scolecodonts are more common than chitinozoans in the palynological residues, but are mostly represented by fragments or minor apparatus elements with a low biostratigraphical value. However, material from the Yoshiki and Fukuji Formations includes several species of Mochtyella as well as representatives of Oenonites, Kettnerites, Lunoprionella, Vistulella? and possibly other placognath taxa. Scolecodonts are also present in the Silurian Middle Member of the Gionyama Formation, Kyushu, including a well‐preserved jaw of Pistoprion, and fragments of putative Kettnerites and Oenonites. These finds of scolecodonts suggest close similarity in assemblages between Paleozoic polychaete faunas of Japanese terranes and those of Baltica‐Laurentia.  相似文献

General theoretical results via a Hamiltonian formulation are developed for zonal shear flows with the inclusion of the vortex stretching effect of the deformed free surface (equivalent barotropic model). These results include a generalization of the Flierl–Stern–Whitehead zero angular momentum theorem for localized nonlinear structures (whether or not on a β-plane), and sufficient conditions for linear and nonlinear stability in the Liapunov sense–the latter are given as estimates in terms of an L 2-type perturbation norm which are global in time and are derived via bounds on the equilibrium potential vorticity gradient.  相似文献

The Alaska Tsunami Warning Center has the responsibility of providing timely tsunami warning services for Alaska and the west coasts of Canada and the United States. Recently, the ATWC implemented a new microcomputer system which is used for both automatic and interactive earthquake processing, and for disseminating critical information to the Tsunami Warning System recipients.Real-time seismic wave form data from 23 short-period and 9 long-period sites in Alaska, the lower 48 States, and Hawaii, are continually computer-monitored for the occurrence of an earthquake. Once detected from the short-period wave form data, pre- and post-earthquake data are displayed on a graphics terminal along with an indicator to identify the time of the onset of theP waves (P-picks). TheP-picks can easily be changed during or after data collection via a mouse. Magnitudes (M b ,M l ,M B ,M S ) are automatically computed from appropriate short- and long-period wave form data concurrently with the above processing. A second graphics terminal displays cycle-by-cycle long-period wave form data that was used to compute an earthquake'sM B andM S magnitudes. An earthquake's parametric data and other information are available and printed within tens of seconds after theP wave arrivals are recorded at the first 5 sites, then 7 sites, 9 sites, and a final parametric computation using all collected data. Three video display monitors are used for displaying the parameters, procedural aids, and a map showing the epicenter. Additionally, selected event parameters are immediately transmitted by VHF radio to alphanumeric beepers which are carried by standby duty personnel during those times that the Center is not manned.Using a dedicated video display terminal and printer, the interactive system can use data and parameters resulting from the automatic processes for concurrent parameter recomputations; perform additional computations; disseminate critical information; and generate procedural aids for duty geophysicists to facilitate an earthquake/tsunami investigation.  相似文献

Linear plots of log N against log G, where N is the number of steps of length G to span a transit, are conventionally used as evidence that geomorphic surfaces are self-similar fractals (i.e. the surfaces have a constant fractal dimension). In this study 42 transits on talus slope surfaces in Niagara and Letchworth Gorges, western New York, are investigated to ascertain whether they are self-similar. Log N-log G plots, which r2 values in excess of 0·99 suggest are linear, are found upon more rigorous testing to be curvilinear. It is concluded that the talus slope surfaces are not self-similar, and that log N-log G plots are relatively insensitive to departures from self-similarity. The curvilinearity of the log N-log G plots is explained with the aid of a randomized square-wave model of the talus slope surfaces. This model is used to extend the range of measurement beyond that which was possible in the empirical analysis. The negative of the gradient of the log N -log G relation at a point is the fractal dimension D. Measurements made upon the randomized square-wave model indicate that the relation between D and scale of measurement has an asymmetrical wave shape with a peak (i.e. maximum D) where the scale of measurement is equal to the characteristic scale of roughness. In other words the value of D for a surface is not absolute but depends on the scale of measurement relative to the scale of roughness. Linear regression analysis reveals that at the scale of measurement employed in this study, D is positively correlated with particle size. This is because the values of D fall on the right-hand tail of the wave-shaped relation between D and scale of measurement. Transects (normal to the direction of slope) are found to have higher values of D than profiles (parallel to the direction of slope), and this is explained in terms of particle orientation, shape, and juxtaposition. Because D varies continuously with scale of measurement, there are considerable difficulties in using it to characterize and compare the surface roughness of talus slopes. Generalizing from talus slopes to other ground surfaces, it is evident that to the extent that any natural ground surface has a characteristic scale of roughness, it will depart from self-similarity, and D should be used with caution in quantifying the roughness of the surface. Geomorphologists are therefore urged to be more rigorous in their testing of self-similarity before employing D to characterize surface roughness.  相似文献

We present a study of statistical relationships between SAR arc intensities acquired by the Pacific Northwest Laboratory Photometer Network during 1978–1988 and solar and geomagnetic activity indices Dst, F10.7, and Kp by use of the method of multiple regression analysis. We found significant correlations between intensity and all of the indices involved. In the present work we show for the first time that the partial correlation coefficients depend on the time offset, t, between the time of SAR arc intensity observations and the onset of the geomagnetic storm recovery phase, with the largest correlations being observed when 8 d t d 16 h. It is also shown that there are significant differences between partial correlation coefficients calculated for SAR arcs associated with strong (Dstmin > −100 nT) and weak (Dstmin > −100 nT) geomagnetic storms. We observe also that the multiple correlation coefficients for strong storms are much larger than for weak ones. We found that the variations in the electron temperature, Te, in the SAR arc region are not mainly produced by variations in the electron density of the ionosphere but are strongly driven by the additional heating of the electron gas due to an interaction of the ring current ions and the plasmaspheric electrons. As a result, variations of Te in the SAR arc region with characteristic time scales from several minutes to several hours are stipulated by time variations of ring current parameters.  相似文献

The presence of pathogenic bacteria in water, along with the factors that act upon them, constitutes a field that has been little investigated in natural environments. It is clear, however, that these pathogens do have a significant effect on the quality of drinking water. Selected bacteria such as Salmonella, Campylobacter, Yersinia, and Listeria were searched for in groundwaters of mainly mountainous regions. Waters of one or two brooks in the catchment area of each spring were also analysed. Our results show that Campylo bacter and Listeria are frequent in all of these waters, even when land use in the catchment area is extensive (mountain pastures). Salmonella, on the other hand, was never found. Factors influencing the presence of Campylobacter, Yersinia, and Listeria were tested using Spearman rank correlations. The results suggest that the presence in water of some species of these bacteria (C. jejuni, L. monocytogenes 4b, and L. ivanovii) is related to a contaminant input, i.e. to the presence of cattle in the catchment area. For other species (C. coli, L. monocytogenes 1/2a, and Yersinia enterocolitica), however, one is forced to admit that no such connection between the presence of these species and that of an identified, potential contaminant input exists. We are therefore obliged to conclude either that these bacteria multiply in a natural way in the environment, or that they are able to survive in it for a long time. Finally, the present study shows that pathogenic bacteria are not always accompanied by indicators of faecal contamination (Escherichia coli, entero cocci); for this reason, they could potentially pose a risk to public health.  相似文献

Fractal theory is applied in a quantitative analysis of geomagnetic storms. Fractal dimensions (D) of the attractor for storm data from the Beijing observatory (40.0°N, 116.2°E) using several time intervals are calculated. A maximum value of 1.4 has been obtained for a geomagnetic storm; on quite days the dimension is only slightly larger than 0.5. Data from two storms are analyzed here. Results show that a combination of both D and the magnetic index, k, can perhaps describe the degree of solar disturbance better than the single parameter k.  相似文献

This study focuses on the characteristics of near-fault ground motions in the forward-direction and structural response associated with them. These ground motions are narrow-banded in nature and are characterized by a predominant period at which structures excited by them are severely affected. In this work, predominant period is defined as the undamped natural period of a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) oscillator at which its 5% damped linear elastic pseudo-spectral velocity (PSV) contains a clear and dominant peak. It is found that a linear relationship exists between predominant period and seismic moment. An empirical equation describing this relationship is presented by using a large set of accelerograms. Attenuation equations are developed to estimate peak ground velocity (PGV) as a function of earthquake magnitude and source-to-site distance. In addition, a predictive equation for spectral shapes of PSV (i.e., PSV normalized by PGV) is presented as a continuous function of the undamped natural period of SDOF oscillators. The model is independent of PGV, and can be used in conjunction with any available PGV attenuation relation applicable to near-fault ground motion exhibiting forward-directivity effects. Furthermore, viscous damping of the SDOF is included in the model as a continuous parameter, eliminating the use of so-called damping correction factors. Finally, simple equations relating force reduction factors and displacement ductility of elasto-plastic SDOF systems are presented.  相似文献

Ad hoc techniques for estimating the position and the scale parameters of the Generalized Extreme Values distribution are introduced. The estimators proposed are simple linear combinations of the order statistics: they provide valuable estimates of the parameters of interest both when the shape parameter is known and when it is unknown (this latter case being of great relevance in practical applications), and show a good performance as well when the sample size is small. In addition, weakly-consistent estimators of the position parameter are introduced, whose calculation does not require the knowledge of any of the remaining parameters. The procedures are tested on simulated data, and comparisons with other techniques are shown.  相似文献

This paper presents the calibration of Omori's aftershock occurrence rate model for Turkey and the resulting likelihoods. Aftershock occurrence rate models are used for estimating the probability of an aftershock that exceeds a specific magnitude threshold within a time interval after the mainshock. Critical decisions on the post-earthquake safety of structures directly depend on the aftershock hazard estimated using the occurrence model. It is customary to calibrate models in a region-specific manner. These models depend on rate parameters(a, b, c and p) related to the seismicity characteristics of the investigated region. In this study, the available well-recorded aftershock sequences for a set of Mw ≥ 5.9 mainshock events that were observed in Turkey until 2012 are considered to develop the aftershock occurrence model. Mean estimates of the model parameters identified for Turkey are a =-1.90, b = 1.11, c = 0.05 and p = 1.20. Based on the developed model, aftershock likelihoods are computed for a range of different time intervals and mainshock magnitudes. Also, the sensitivity of aftershock probabilities to the model parameters is investigated. Aftershock occurrence probabilities estimated using the model are expected to be useful for post-earthquake safety evaluations in Turkey.  相似文献

Abstract

Under consideration are interfaces between two media of different densities and which arise from the interaction between the Mth and Nth harmonics of the motion where 1 ≤ N < M. By means of the method of multiple scales in both space and time a pair of nonlinear coupled partial differential equations is derived which model the progression of the interface. The equations contain a detuning parameter [sgrave] which allow imperfections in the resonance to be taken into account. Stokes-type sinusoidal solutions to the equations were sought. It was found that solutions exist for all values of the interaction ratio M/N. In some situations interfaces exist at both exact and near resonance; while in others they are destroyed by amplifications in the detuning. In yet others, a quantity of detuning is actually necessary for the profiles to exist. In all cases, even when the parameters are fixed, a very large class of interface profiles is possible. Finally, the stability of the profiles is studied. It is found that some are quite stable, even to perturbations with wavenumbers close to the main flow.  相似文献

This paper examines temporal correlations and temporal clustering of a proxy historical landslide time series, 2255 reported landslides 1951–2002, for an area in the Emilia‐Romagna Region, Italy. Landslide intensity is measured by the number of reported landslides in a day (DL) and in an ‘event’ (Sevent) of consecutive days with landsliding. The non‐zero values in both time series DL and Sevent are unequally spaced in time, and have heavy‐tailed frequency‐size distributions. To examine temporal correlations, we use power‐spectral analysis (Lomb periodogram) and surrogate data analysis, confronting our original DL and Sevent time series with 1000 shuffled (uncorrelated) versions. We conclude that the landslide intensity series DL has strong temporal correlations and Sevent has likely temporal correlations. To examine temporal clustering in DL and Sevent, we consider extremes over different landslide intensity thresholds. We first examine the statistical distribution of interextreme occurrence times, τ, and find Weibull distributions with parameter γ << 1·0 [DL] and γ < 1·0 [Sevent]; thus DL and Sevent each have temporal correlations, but Sevent to a lesser degree. We next examine correlations between successive interextreme occurrence times, τ. Using autocorrelation analysis applied to τ, combined with surrogate data analysis, we find for DL linear correlations in τ, but for Sevent inconclusive results. However, using Kendall's rank correlation analysis we find for both DL and Sevent the series of τ are strongly correlated. Finally, we apply Fano Factor analysis, finding for both DL and Sevent the timings of extremes over a given threshold exhibit a fractal structure and are clustered in time. In this paper, we provide a framework for examining time series where the non‐zero values are strongly unequally spaced and heavy‐tailed, particularly important in the Earth Sciences due to their common occurrence, and find that landslide intensity time series exhibit temporal correlations and clustering. Many landslide models currently are designed under the assumption that landslides are uncorrelated in time, which we show is false. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Abstract Fossil pinnipeds in the extinct otariid subfamily Allodesminae are large, relatively highly evolved marine carnivores that became abundant and diverse in Middle Miocene time and were restricted to the North Pacific Ocean. Their record extends from early Middle Miocene through Late Miocene, with records from California, Oregon, Washington, Baja California and Japan. Allodesmines are characterized by extreme sexual dimorphism, a large orbit, retracted orbital margin of the zygomatic arch, a deeply mortised jugal-squamosal junction, wide palate, bulbous cheek tooth crowns, nearly flat tympanic bulla with wrinkled ventral surface, a large tympanohyal fossa, large ear ossicles and deep mandible. Eleven allodesmine species are known (eight of which are named), in at least four genera, and most belong to the typical genus Allodesmus Kellogg, 1922. The earliest and most generalized allodesmine known is from the early Middle Miocene (ca 16 Ma) Astoria Formation in coastal Oregon. The last known records are from Late Miocene rocks (ca 10 Ma) in California and Washington. New taxa proposed here are: the genus Brachyallodesmus Barnes and Hirota, to contain Allodesmus packardi Barnes, 1972; the genus Megagomphos Hirota and Barnes, to contain Allodesmus sinanoensis (Nagao, 1941); the species Allodesmus sadoensis Hirota, (Middle Miocene, Japan); the species Allodesmus megallos Hirota (Middle Miocene, Japan); and the species Allodesmus gracilis Barnes (Middle Miocene, California). Additionally, the genus Atopotarus Downs, 1956, and the species Allodesmus kelloggi Mitchell, 1966, are resurrected. Allodesmines were apparently a rapidly evolving group, and most appear to have been adapted to roles later filled by otariine, dusignathine and imagotariine otariids, and the Phocidae (true seals). They became extinct in Late Miocene time and left no living descendants. Although some of their characters evolved convergently with various living species of the pinniped family Phocidae, Allodesminae are an otariid group and not part of the evolutionary history of Phocidae.  相似文献

Flow liquefaction and cyclic mobility are two different phenomena that are encountered during strong earthquakes. Flow liquefaction is associated with the contractive behavior of loose granular materials and cyclic mobility is associated with the dilative response of both loose and dense granular materials at low confining stresses. These two types of response pertain to the same material and therefore should be modeled in a consistent manner. Whether a soil in a given state exhibits contractive or dilative behavior is dependent on its dilatancy, d=dvp/dqp. A form of the dilatancy d=d(η,ψ,C) is proposed, where η=q/p is the stress ratio, and ψ and C denote the internal state variables and the intrinsic properties, respectively. It has been shown that such a state-dependent dilatancy is effective in describing both the contractive and dilative behavior. This allows the soil behavior associated with flow liquefaction and cyclic mobility during earthquakes to be modeled in a unified way.  相似文献

Two approaches are followed to estimate the fit between ‘observations’ and the results obtained with different numerical models within the frame of the Tidal Flow Forum exercise. The first approach (i.e. the computation of the RMS errors on the timeseries for a specific day) is shown to be insufficient because the RMS error computed over a short period of time is strongly dependent on the selected test period. Such RMS values are significant if and only if they are computed over a sufficiently long period of time, T. Hence, the model validation must be done on the basis of the results of long term simulations. The limit of the RMS values as T becomes arbitrarily large is related to the maximum error made on each constituent. Those maximum errors are easily calculated from the harmonic constants (computed versus observed) of the constituents. The results of the calculation of the maximum errors indicate that the M2, S2, N2 and M4 components are the largest contributors to the overall error for the area under consideration. On the basis of maximum errors, the TFF results obtained so far are almost of the same order of accuracy. The errors affecting the TFF results are not much larger than those affecting most reported results of similar models used in similar applications  相似文献

A global positioning system and ground penetrating radar surveys is used to produce digital elevation models of the surface and bed of Brewster Glacier. These are used to derive maps of subglacial hydraulic potential and drainage system structure using three different assumptions about the subglacial water pressure (Pw): (i) Pw = ice overburden; (ii) Pw = half ice overburden; (iii) Pw = atmospheric. Additionally, 16 dye‐tracing experiments at 12 locations were performed through a summer melt season. Dye return curve shape, together with calculations of transit velocity, dispersivity and storage, are used to infer the likely morphology of the subglacial drainage system. Taken together, the data indicate that the glacier is underlain by a channelised but hydraulically inefficient drainage system in the early summer in which water pressures are close to ice overburden. By mid‐summer, water pressures are closer to half‐ice overburden and the channelised drainage system is more hydraulically efficient. Surface streams that enter the glacier close to the location of major subglacial drainage pathways are routed quickly to the channels and then to the glacier snout. Streams that enter the glacier further away from the drainage pathways are routed slowly to the channels and then to the snout because they first flow through a distributed drainage system. The result of electron microscopic investigation of gas-vacuoles in a culture of the benthal algaOscillatoria chalybea was compared with the extensive literature concerning gas-vacuole formation and virus infection in bacteria and animals. On the basis of 21 features indicating that gas-vacuoles are pathological inclusions it was concluded that they are viruslike particles. Viruslike structures have also been found in our material ofSymploca muscorum, Plectonema boryanum, aNostoc sp., and a new case of virus infection in the thermophilic algaMastigocladus laminosus has been described.  相似文献

Summary Formulae are derived for the reflection and transmission coeficients of plane elastic waves for a transition layer. Haskell's technique and the so-called delta matrices[5, 7] are used for this purpose. No problems are encountered in deriving the reflections and transmission coefficients from Haskell's matrices[3]. However, in some cases Haskell's matrices do not guarantee the accuracy required. For this reason attention is mainly devoted to deriving the reflection and transmission coefficients from the delta matrices. In deriving the transmission coefficients use is made of the fact that some3×3 subdeterminants of the delta matrices are squares of the3×3 subdeterminants of Haskell's matrices.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the magnitude–intensity and intensity–attenuation relationships for earthquakes in the Atlas block and Algeria using macroseismic data. This work is based on a selected sample of isoseismal maps from 32 events which were recently revised. Surface-wave magnitudes, Ms, are recalculated using the Prague formula and range from 4·2 to 7·45. Because the Atlas mountains block is in a collision zone, earthquakes occur in general within a layer 15 km deep. Expressions of general form for the magnitude–intensity and intensity–attenuation correlations are adopted and are, respectively, and where R2 = d2 + h2, d the source distance in km, h the focal depth in km, Ms the revised surface-wave magnitude, Msc the predicted surface-wave magnitude, Ii the intensity at isoseismal i, I the predicted intensity, σ the standard deviation and P is zero for 50-percentile values and one for 84-percentile, and the coefficients A's and B's are determined by regression analysis. The results of this study show that the intensity–attenuation models are adequate to predict quite well the die-out of intensity with distance in the Atlas zone and coastal Algeria; it is also found that magnitude can be predicted accurately by calibrating isoseismal radii against revised instrumental surface-wave magnitude. Such magnitude–intensity relationships may be used to evaluate the magnitude of historical earthquakes in the region under survey, with no instrumental data, for which isoseismal radii and intensities are available.  相似文献
