Ice crystal clouds have an influence on the radiative budget of the earth; however, the exact size and nature of this influence has yet to be determined. A laboratory cloud chamber experiment has been set up to provide data on the optical scattering behaviour of ice crystals at a visible wavelength in order to gain information which can be used in climate models concerning the radiative characteristics of cirrus clouds. A PMS grey-scale probe is used to monitor simultaneously the cloud microphysical properties in order to correlate these closely with the observed radiative properties. Preliminary results show that ice crystals scatter considerably more at 90° than do water droplets, and that the halo effects are visible in a laboratorygenerated cloud when the ice crystal concentration is sufficiently small to prevent masking from multiple scattering.  相似文献

The scattering behaviour of bullet-rosette and bullet-shaped ice particles is investigated using model calculations (ray tracing method) with special emphasis on the asymmetry factor g. Because the variability of the geometrical features of these particles is very large, some representative shapes are used in the calculations. The model is based on geometrical optics, and particles are assumed to be oriented randomly; a wavelength of 0.56 m is considered; absorption is neglected. The scattering behaviour of bullet rosettes is compared to that of single branches out of the bullet rosette. It turns out that there are slight differences in the asymmetry factor values, depending on the lengths of the branches (g\approx0.02) and on the angles between the branches (g\approx0.01). Bullets show some special features in their phase functions due to the pyramid. The length of the particle influences the asymmetry factor (g\approx0.10), as does the shape of the pyramid (g\approx0.07). The influence of the pyramidal shape decreases with increasing particle length. Bullets were compared to hexagonally shaped columns. This was done for two columns, one as long as the columnar part of the bullet (length without pyramid), and one for a column as long as the bullet including the pyramid. Asymmetry factor values of bullets with a pyramidal angle of 28° deviate less than g\approx0.01 from the range given by the two values of the columns.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Am 5. Mai 1950 beobachteten viele Bewohner der Insel Kuba einen auffälligen Sonnenhalo. Die vom Verfasser aufgenommenen Farbphotographien zeigen, dass es sich um einen Kreishalo von 22 Grad handelte, der von einem in zwei Punkten berührenden Oval umschrieben war, so wie dies vonA. Wegener und andern Autoren bereits eingehend beschrieben und auch berechnet wurde. Mit Hilfe mehrerer Zeichnungen gibt der Autor eine eingehende Erklärung der Ursache dieser Erscheinung, die auf dem hohen Sonnenstand (65°) und auf der Vorherrschaft länglicher, horizontal orientierter Eisflimmerchen der Zirrenwolke beruht.
Summary On May 5th 1950 a conspicuous solar halo attracted the interest of many of the inhabitants of the Isle of Cuba. The colour photographs taken by the author prove that it was a circular halo of 22 degrees, circumscribed by a doubly osculating oval, as theoretically studied byA. Wegener and others. By means of several drawings, the author gives a detailed explanation of the origin of this phenomenon, due to the high elevation of the sun (65°) and the prevalence of elongated horizontal ice crystals which constitute the cirrus.

Summary Working on the hypothesis that atmospheric ice-forming nuclei are largely of terrestrial origin, the nucleating ability of various types of soil particles and mineral dusts has been investigated. Of the thirty substances tested, twenty-one, mainly silicate minerals of the clay and mica groups, were found to produce ice crystals in supercooled clouds and also on supercooled soap films at temperatures of – 18° C, or above, and of these, ten were active above – 12° C. The most abundant of these is kaolinite with a threshold temperature of – 9° C. Ten natural substances, again mainly silicates, were found to become more efficient ice nuclei having once been involved in ice-crystal formation, i.e. they could be pre-activated or «trained». Thus, ice crystals grown on kaolinite nuclei, which are initially active at –9° C, when evaporated and warmed to near 0° C in a dry atmosphere, leave behind nuclei which are thereafter effective at – 4° C. Particles of montmorillonite, another important constituent of some clays, and which are initially inactive even at –25° C, may be pre-activated to serve as ice nuclei at temperatures as high as –10° C. It is suggested that although such particles can initially form ice crystals only at cirrus levels, when the ice crystals evaporate they will leave behind some «trained» nuclei which may later seed lower clouds at temperatures only a few degrees below 0° C. On this hypothesis, the fact that efficient nuclei are occasionally more abundant at higher levels would not necessarily imply that they originate from outer space. Indeed, in view of our tests on products of stony meteorites, produced both by grinding and vaporization, which show them to be ineffective at temperatures above – 17° C, it seems likely that atmospheric ice nuclei are produced mainly at the earth's surface, the clay minerals, particularly kaolinite, being a major source.Although a good deal of work has been carried out in different laboratories on the ice-nucleating ability of a wide variety of inorganic compounds, there has been little agreement in the results. Careful tests carried out in our laboratory have revealed a number of reasons for this. Spurious results may be obtained because of the presence, in the air or the chemicals, of small traces of silver or free iodine, leading to the formation of silver iodide: if all such trace impurities are removed, many of the substances that have been claimed to provide efficient ice nuclei are found to be quite ineffective. It is dangerous to infer that all twinkling particles in a water cloud are ice crystals since particles of some seeding agents glitter even at positive temperatures. The threshold temperature of a nucleant will depend upon the criterion adopted for the onset of nucleation, i.e. upon the fraction of the total number of particles of seeding agent which are activated; this, in turn, will depend upon the fraction of particles which happen to possess suitable crystallographic faces for nucleation. Much may also depend upon the manner in which the test is performed. Since some nucleating materials produce ice crystals only after a delay of 30 seconds or more, they may appear to be ineffective if tested in the transient cloud of an expansion chamber but highly effective if allowed to remain in an ice-supersaturated atmosphere for a minute or more. Again, we have found that the efficiency of some nuclei is governed by the supersaturation as well as the temperature of the environment, and the supersaturation regimes in expansion, diffusion, and mixing-cloud chamber may be widely different. Highly soluble particles, although able to act as «sublimation» nuclei in atmospheres super-saturated relative to ice but sub-saturated relative to water, on entering a water cloud go quickly into solution and lose their nucleating ability.Inorganic substances which definitely nucleate a supercooled water cloud in a mixing-cloud chamber at temperatures of –15° C and above are: AgI (–4° C), PbI2 (–6° C), CuS (–6° C), Ag2S (–8° C), Ag2O (–9° C), HgI2 (–8° C), V2O5 (–14° C), Cu2I2 (–15° C), the figures in brackets indicating the threshold temperatures at which about one particle in 104 becomes active as an ice nucleus. Cadmium iodide (–12° C), ammonium fluoride (–9° C) and iodine (–14° C) are examples of salts which will act as sublimation nuclei in an ice-supersaturated atmosphere and will nucleate a supercooled soap film, but which are ineffective in a water cloud because of their solubility.Although the most efficient nucleating agents tend to be hexagonal in structure, there are some striking exceptions e.g. Ag2S, Ag2O, HgI2, but in most cases, we have been able to find a low-index crystal surface on which the ice lattice could grow with a misfit of only a few per cent.In an attempt to investigate the nucleation mechanism in more detail, we have studied the growth of ice on single crystals of various nucleating agents. Perfect orientation of ice crystals has so far been observed on the basal faces of silver iodide, lead iodide, cupric sulphide, cadmium iodide, and freshly-cleaved mica, on the (001) plane of iodine, and on the (010) plane of mercuric iodide.  相似文献

乌梁素海湖冰晴天反照率日变化具有双峰特征,利用当地太阳高度角同经纬度和儒历的关系,归一化到北京时,依此表达湖冰反照率日变化规律.基于具有指数函数形式的拉普拉斯、高斯、耿贝尔和柯西4种概率密度分布函数建立线性组合模型,对日出后到日落前太阳高度角大于5°时段内的反照率日变化数据进行拟合,发现拉普拉斯密度分布函数组合是最佳统计模型.它既能拟合太阳高度角大于5°时间范围内反照率日变化曲线的双峰特征,又能反映太阳高度角大于15°时间范围内反照率日变化曲线双峰之间的U型分布.该模型不仅形式简单,而且意义明确:尺度参数约为日长的一半,双峰位置与日出时刻关系密切;同时能体现2个反照率峰值的不对称性.为发展不同地区湖冰反照率日变化参数化方案奠定基础.  相似文献

Permo-Triassic and Precambrian dolerites have been collected for palaeomagnetic research in Suriname (South America) at 24 sites (280 oriented cores). After A.F. or thermal demagnetization, consistent directions were obtained for the following groups: Permo-Triassic (227 × 106 y), 10 sites, 90 samples, D = 358°, I = −7°, pole 82° S, 40° W; Precambrian (around 1.550−1.650 × × 109 y), 2 sites, 17 samples, D = 277°, I = +35°, pole position 8° S, 53° E; Precambrian (about 1.750 × 109 y), 2 sites, 30 samples, D = 314°, I = +3°, pole 44° S, 30° E. Precambrian pole positions for South America, Africa, North America and Europe are discussed.  相似文献

New characteristics of O+ ion velocity distribution functions in a background of atomic oxygen neutrals subjected to intense external electromagnetic forces are presented. The one dimensional (1-D) distribution function along the magnetic field displays a core-halo shape which can be accurately fitted by a two Maxwellian model. The Maxwellian shape of the 1-D distribution function around a polar angle of 21 ± 1° from the magnetic field direction is confirmed, taking into account the accuracy of the Monte Carlo simulations. For the first time, the transition of the O+ 1-D distribution function from a core halo shape along the magnetic field direction to the well-known toroidal shape at large polar angles, through the Maxwellian shape at polar angle of 21 ± 1° is properly explained from a generic functional of the velocity moments at order 2 and 4.  相似文献

Summary If needle-shaped ice crystals are grown in an atmosphere containing traces of nitrous gases, the amount of electrical charge generated when sharp crystal points break away, is between 10 and 50 times as high as in the case of crystals grown in absence of nitrous gases A definite relation has been found to exist between the NO 3 ion concentration of the ice crytals and the amount of charge (average value 2.7×10–8, maximum value 13×10–8 coulombs per gram of ice splinters) generated upon fragmentation. Zusammenfassung An künstlich erzeugten unterkühlten Nebeln wurde die Eiskeimbildung his –85°C untersucht. Bei tiefen Temperaturen treten so hohe Eisteilchendichten auf, daß sie erst an fotografischen Aufnahmen der Eiswolken bei geeigneter Vergrösserung bestimmt werden konnten. Die von anderer Seite bei –40°C behauptete und mit homogener Keimbildung gedeutete Vervielfachung der Eisteilchenzahl konnte nicht festgestellt werden. Meistens steigt die Teilchendichte spätestens bei –30°C stark an, bleibt dann aber zwischen –40°C und –65°C praktisch konstant bei im Mittel 174 Eisteilchen pro cm3. Dieser Uebergang, der an der vollständigen Vereisung der Tröpfchenwolke direkt zu erkennen ist, findet je nach Wetterlage zwischen –40 und –50°C statt und muß somit noch durch Gefrierkerne hervorgerufen sein.Erst bei Annäherung an –70°C bilden sich in Uebereinstimmung mit früheren Ergebnissen des Verf. ausserordentlich dichte und beständige Nebel aus feinsten Eisteilchen mit. Anzeichen von homogener Bildung.
Summary The formation of ice germs down to –85°C was investigated with artificial supercooled nebula. At low temperatures the densities of ice particles are so high that they could only be determined by photographs of the ice clouds with suitable enlargements. The multiplication of the number of ice particles which, according to assertions from another side, should take place at –40°C and which was interpreted by homogeneous formation of germs, could not be ascertained. In most cases the density of particles increases considerably at –30° at the latest, and then remains practically constant between –40 and –65°C with an average of 174 ice particles per cm3. This transition which can directly be observed at the complete icing of the cloud of droplets, takes place — according to the weather conditions —between –40 and –50°C and must, therefore, also be caused by freezing nuclei.Extremely dense and constant nebula consisting of the finest ice particles with signs of homogeneous formation are only formed with an approximation to –70°C, which is in good agreement with earlier results of the author.

In this paper, we estimated the effective size of ice crystals in cirrus clouds using fall velocity derived from LiDAR (light detection and ranging) measurements at Chung-Li (24.58°N, 121.1°E), Taiwan. Nine shapes of the ice crystals, viz. hexagonal plates, hexagonal columns, rimed long columns, crystals with sector-like branches, broad-branched crystals, stellar crystal with broad arms, side planes, bullet rosettes and assemblages of planar poly-crystals of specific dimensions have been analyzed. The results show that the lidar derived most probable mean effective size of ice crystals is 340±180 μm with a dominant size range of 200–300 μm. The lidar derived mean effective size of cirrus crystals are parameterized in terms of cloud mid-height temperature as well as optical depth. The discussed method will be useful to study the most probable effective size distribution of ice crystals in cirrus cloud.  相似文献

Previous studies of ground ice using moveout type ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys indicate that the dielectric permittivity can constrain the type of ground ice present in the subsurface. Due to the high-loss nature of the active layer over permafrost targets, however, the signal strength of GPR signals is often insufficient to resolve the basal boundary required for determining the dielectric permittivity of an underlying unit. We apply a non-conventional antenna orientation and post-processing method to determine the dielectric permittivity of the unit underlying the lowest resolvable boundary. We conduct moveout surveys using a 450 MHz GPR with collinear parallel oriented antennas on two adjacent ground ice formations in the region of Thomas Lee Inlet, Devon Island, Nunavut. We exploit the Brewster angle to calculate the approximate dielectric permittivity of ground ice formations below the active layer. The results agree within 1 dielectric unit with on-ice permittivity measurements made during a complementary study of the site.  相似文献

Lateral blasts at andesitic and dacitic volcanoes can produce a variety of direct hazards, including ballistic projectiles which can be thrown to distances of at least 10 km and pyroclastic density flows which can travel at high speed to distances of more than 30 km. Indirect effect that may accompany such explosions include wind-borne ash, pyroclastic flows formed by the remobilization of rock debris thrown onto sloping ground, and lahars.Two lateral blasts occurred at a lava dome on the north flank of Mount St. Helens about 1200 years ago; the more energetic of these threw rock debris northeastward across a sector of about 30° to a distance of at least 10 km. The ballistic debris fell onto an area estimated to be 50 km2, and wind-transported ash and lapilli derived from the lateral-blast cloud fell on an additional lobate area of at least 200 km2. In contrast, the vastly larger lateral blast of May 18, 1980, created a devastating pyroclastic density flow that covered a sector of as much as 180°, reached a maximum distance of 28 km, and within a few minutes directly affected an area of about 550 km2. The May 18 lateral blast resulted from the sudden, landslide-induced depressurization of a dacite cryptodome and the hydrothermal system that surrounded it within the volcano.We propose that lateral-blast hazard assessments for lava domes include an adjoining hazard zone with a radius of at least 10 km. Although a lateral blast can occur on any side of a dome, the sector directly affected by any one blast probably will be less than 180°. Nevertheless, a circular hazard zone centered on the dome is suggested because of the difficulty of predicting the direction of a lateral blast.For the purpose of long-term land-use planning, a hazard assessment for lateral blasts caused by explosions of magma bodies or pressurized hydrothermal systems within a symmetrical volcano could designate a circular potential hazard area with a radius of 35 km centered on the volcano. For short-term hazard assessments, if seismicity and deformation indicate that magma is moving toward the flank of a volcano, it should be recognized that a landslide could lead to the sudden unloading of a magmatic or hydrothermal system and thereby cause a catastrophic lateral blast. A hazard assessment should assume that a lateral blast could directly affect an area at least 180° wide to a distance of 35 km from the site of the explosion, irrespective of topography.  相似文献

A new algorithm to correct the orientation error of the accelerometerat the Dahan Downhole Array, Hualien, Taiwan is developed. This algorithmconsists of three stages: (1) rotating two horizontal ground motions on thefree surface to the SH-SVdirection and SH axis offers a reference direction.(2) computing the synthetic downhole SH waves at a downhole station and (3)searching a rotation angle for downhole observation that yields a best waveformmatch between the synthetic and observed downhole seismograms. At this point, the rotated angle corresponding to the best waveform match can be considered as the orientation error. We selected five earthquakes with good data qualityfor analysis. Results show that this algorithm gives a more stable estimationthan a conventional method because it allows the selection of data from a wider time window for analyses. The estimated orientation error of the accelerometers at the Dahan Downhole Array after the 1999 reinstallation are40°, 114° and 285° at depths of 50, 100 and 200 m, respectively.  相似文献

Stable oxygen isotope analysis and measurement of several dissolved cations and anions of bulk meltwater samples have provided information about the hydrochemical environment of the glacial hydrological system at Imersuaq Glacier, an outlet tongue from the Greenland ice‐sheet, West Greenland. The samples were collected at frequent intervals during the period 20–28 July 2000 in a small (<20 L s?1) englacial meltwater outlet at the glacier margin. The results document the following findings: (i) a marked diurnal variation of δ18O is related to the composition of oxygen isotope provenances, mainly near‐marginal local superimposed ice and basal up‐sheared ice further up‐glacier; (ii) a relationship is seen between all base cations (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+), SO42? and δ18O, indicating that solute acquisition is provided by solid–solution contact with the up‐sheared ice—as the relationship with Cl? is weak the influence of seasalt‐derived solutes is small in the area; (iii) when the melt rate is high, two diurnal maxima of δ18O values and solute concentrations are measured, and it is suggested that a snow meltwater component is responsible for the second maximum of δ18O—a short residence time leads to a delayed decrease in ion concentrations. Summary A typical geodetic satellite orbit has been computed by numerical integration for a period of thirty hours. The gravitational potential of a standard orbit was represented by the SAO 1969 Standard Earth potential coefficients taken to degree 18. Other orbits were generated using the generalized Stokes' equations and the coating method applied to gravity anomalies and surface densities, in 5°, 10°, 15° and 30° equal-area blocks, derived from the given potential coefficients. The differences between these orbits yield the position differences to be expected when representing the potential field by using gravity data instead of potential coefficients. Using 10°, 15°, and 30° blocks and the generalized Stokes' equations, the position error at the end of thirty hours was 89 meters, 224 meters, and 2060 meters respectively. This error is primarily due to the integration error in computing the gravitational field by summation over a finite number of areas.  相似文献

Summary The wavenumber-frequency spectra of the meridional flux of angular momentum at 20°, 30°, 40°, 50°, 60° and 70°S, at 500 mb, show a definite domain of wave interactions between the zonal and meridional components of the velocity at various latitudes. In middle latitudes, the spectral band of the meridional flux of angular momentum is oriented from a region of low wavenumbers and low frequencies to a region of high wavenumbers and negative frequencies assigned for waves moving from west to east. In low latitudes, however, the spectral domain is confined to a narrow band centered near the zero frquency.In contrast to the meridional flux of angular momentum in the Northern Hemisphere in which the intensity in winter is about twice that in Summer, in the Southern Hemisphere the meridional flux shows same intensity for all seasons.In the Southern Hemisphere, most of the meridional flux of angular momentum is directed toward the south pole and is accomplished by the eastward moving waves. To date, studies of the stability of subsurface ice in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica have been mainly based on climate-based vapor diffusion models. In University Valley (1800 m), a small glacier is found at the base of the head of the valley, and adjacent to the glacier, a buried body of massive ice was uncovered beneath 20–40 cm of loose cryotic sediments and sandstone boulders. This study assesses the origin and stability of the buried body of massive ice by measuring the geochemistry and stable O–H isotope composition of the ice and applies a sublimation and molecular diffusion model that accounts for the observed trends. The results indicate that the buried massive ice body represents an extension of the adjacent glacier that was buried by a rock avalanche during a cold climate period. The contrasting δ18O profiles and regression slope values between the uppermost 6 cm of the buried massive ice (upward convex δ18O profile and SD-18O = 5.1) and that below it (progressive increase in δ18O and SD-18O = 6.4) suggest independent post-depositional processes affected the isotope composition of the ice. The upward convex δ18O profile in the uppermost 6 cm is consistent with the ice undergoing sublimation. Using a sublimation and molecular diffusion model, and assuming that diffusion occurred through solid ice, the sublimation rate needed to fit the measured δ18O profile is 0.2 ? 10? 3 mm yr? 1, a value that is more similar to net ice removal rates derived from 3He data from cobbles in Beacon Valley till (7.0 ? 10? 3 mm yr? 1) than sublimation rates computed based on current climate (0.1–0.2 mm yr?1). We suggest that the climate-based sublimation rates are offset due to potential ice recharge mechanisms or to missing parameters, particularly the nature and thermo-physical properties of the overlying sediments (i.e., temperature, humidity, pore structure and ice content, grain size).  相似文献

Summary The wavenumber-frequency spectra of the meridional transport of sensible heat at 20°, 30°, 40°, 50°, 60°, and 70°S, at 500 mb in the Southern Hemisphere, show a definite spectral domain for the transport at various latitudes, which is dominated by the wave motion of the meridional component of the velocity. In middle latitudes, the spectral band of the meridional flux of sensible heat is oriented from a region of low wavenumbers and low frequencies to a region of high wavenumbers and negative frequencies assigned for waves moving from west to east. In low latitudes, the spectral band is confined to a narrow band centered near the zero frequency. It is found that most of the meridional transport of sensible heat at 500 mb in the Southern Hemisphere is accomplished by waves of medium wavelengths moving from west to east in middle and high latitudes. The meridional flux of sensible heat at 500 mb in the summer of the Southern Hemisphere is about three times that in the summer of the Northern Hemisphere. However, the meridional flux of sensible heat at 500 mb is about the same in the winter of both hemispheres. In the Southern Hemisphere practically all the meridional flux of sensible heat is associated with the moving waves in all seasons, whereas in the Northern Hemisphere the stationary waves contribute about 40% of the transport in winter.The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

本文定量研究了当面波能量分布不遵循各向均匀的假设时,运用空间自相关法(SPAC法)出现的误差.通过分析合成微震记录,研究了方位局限的入射、站台的数量对空间自相关系数的影响,明确了一些圆形排列的SPAC系数偏差空间构造.它可分为两个部分:低频域的零偏差部分和高频域的偏差部分.在高频偏差域,存在排列特色的周期特性.其角度周期是排列圆周上相邻站点之间夹角的一半.研究中要强调的是对于每种圆形排列存在一些特殊的入射方向的现象(如,对三角形排列,那些方向角度为 15°, 45°, 75°,…).当瑞利波沿着这些角度之一传播时,在SPAC谱中,有效的无偏差频率范围扩展到先前研究结果的两倍.这个现象为提高野外SPAC法勘探精度提供了一个新的可能.  相似文献
