We present new observations of the interactions of two close, but distinct, Hα filaments and their successive eruptions on 5 November 1998. The magnetic fields of the filaments are both of the sinistral type. The interactions between the two filaments were initiated mainly by an active filament of one of them. Before the filament eruptions, two dark plasma ejections and chromospheric brightenings were observed. They indicate that possible magnetic reconnection had occurred between the two filaments. During the first filament eruption, salient dark mass motions transferring from the left erupting filament into the right one were observed. The right filament erupted 40 minutes later. This second filament eruption may have been the result of a loss of stability owing to the sudden mass injection from the left filament. Based on the Hα observations, we have created a sketch for understanding the interactions between two filaments and accompanying activities. The traditional theory of filament merger requires that the filaments share the same filament channel and that the reconnection occurs between the two heads, as simulated by DeVore, Antiochos, and Aulanier (Astrophys. J. 629, 1122, 2005; 646, 1349, 2006). Our interpretation is that the external bodily magnetic reconnection between flux ropes of the same chirality is another possible way for two filament bodies to coalesce. An analysis of 20 flares of spotless regions observed at Yunnan Observatory during the peak years of Cycle 21 shows 1) the fraction of flares produced in spotless regions is about 3%, 2) their Carrington longitudes show a tendency to drift eastward, 3) the majority of spotless flares are low-energy flares, 4) the background conditions for producing spotless flares are the same as for flares in general, namely, there must be local magnetic structures of opposite polarities. The spotless flares occur on the sides or in the vicinity of the local neutral line. The quiescent dark filaments floating on the neutral line are activated a few hours and one or two days before the flare, the filament nearest to the flare position first enlarges, accompanied by brightening of plages. A few minutes before the flare, or during the flare, this filament rapidly weakens, even vanishes. Meanwhile, visible fibrils become less inclined to the main filament showing pressure force is transformed into shear force.  相似文献

Magnetic fields in the low corona are the only plausible source of energy for solar flares. Other energy sources appear inadequate or uncorrelated with flares. Low coronal magnetic fields cannot be measured accurately, so most attention has been directed toward measurements of the photospheric magnetic fields from which coronal developments may be inferred. Observations of these magnetic fields are reviewed. It is concluded that, except possibly for the largest flares, changes in the photospheric magnetic fields in flaring centers are confined to evolutionary changes associated with emergence of new magnetic flux. Flare observations with the 10830 Å line of helium, in particular, are discussed. It is concluded that the brightest flare knots appear near points of emergent magnetic flux. Pre-flare activation and eruptions of H filaments are discussed. It is concluded that the rapid motions in filaments indicate unambiguously that the magnetic fields in the low corona are severely disrupted prior to most flares. The coronal signature of H filament eruptions is illustrated with soft X-ray photographs from the S-054 experiment of the NASA Skylab mission. An attempt is made, by studying X-ray flare morphology, to determine whether flares grow by reconnections between adjacent or intertwined magnetic elements or by triggering, in which each flaring loop drives adjacent loops to unstable states. It is concluded that successive loop brightenings are most easily interpreted as the result of magnetic field reconnections, although better time resolution is required to settle the question. A model of magnetic field reconnections for flares associated with filament activation and emerging magnetic flux is presented.  相似文献

Using 15 years of high-resolution solar film obtained at Big Bear Solar Observatory we studied flare-associated filament eruptions. In addition to the classical type eruption consisting of expansion and breakup, we find evidence of another type where a layer is shed from the filament and erupts while the inversion line filament below (or, what is left of it) remains in place. Both types of eruptions are presented in the paper. It is hoped that the new evidence will shed new light on the understanding of the role of filaments in flares.  相似文献

Coronal mass ejection (CME) velocities have been studied over recent decades. We present a statistical analysis of the relationship between CME velocities and X-ray fluxes of the associated flares. We study two types of CMEs. One is the FL type associ- ated only with flares, while the other is the intermediate type associated with both filament eruptions and flares. It is found that the velocities of the FL type CMEs are strongly cor- related with both the peak and the time-integrated X-ray fluxes of the associated flares. However, the correlations between the intermediate type CME velocities and the corre- sponding two parameters are poor. It is also found that the correlation between the CME velocities and the peak X-ray fluxes is stronger than that between the CME velocities and the time-integrated X-ray fluxes of the associated flares.  相似文献

From observations of two-ribbon solar flares, we present a new line of evidence that magnetic reconnection is of key importance in magnetospheric substorms. We infer that in substorms reconnection of closed field lines in the near-Earth thinned plasma sheet both initiates and is driven by the overall MHD instability that drives the tailward expulsion of the reconnected closed field (0 loops). The general basis for this inference is the longstanding notion that two-ribbon flares and substorms are essentially similar phenomena, driven by similar processes. We give an array of observed similarities that substantiate this view. More specifically, our inference for substorms is drawn from observations of filament eruptions in two-ribbon flares, from which we conclude that the heart of the overall instability consists of reconnection and eruption of the closed magnetic field in and around the filament. We propose that essentially the same overall instability operates in substorms. Our point is not that the magnetic field configuration or the microphysics in substorms is identical to that in two-ribbon flares, but that the overall instability results from essentially the same combination of reconnection and eruption of closed magnetic field.  相似文献

We describe the interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) that occurred as a result of a series of solar flares and eruptions from 4 to 8 November 2004. Two ICMEs/magnetic clouds occurring from these events had opposite magnetic orientations. This was despite the fact that the major flares related to these events occurred within the same active region that maintained the same magnetic configuration. The solar events include a wide array of activities: flares, trans-equatorial coronal loop disappearance and reformation, trans-equatorial filament eruption, and coronal hole interaction. The first major ICME/magnetic cloud was predominantly related to the active region 10696 eruption. The second major ICME/magnetic cloud was found to be consistent with the magnetic orientation of an erupting trans-equatorial filament or else a rotation of 160° of a flux rope in the active region. We discuss these possibilities and emphasize the importance of understanding the magnetic evolution of the solar source region before we can begin to predict geoeffective events with any accuracy.  相似文献

We present a theory of filament eruption before the impulsive phase of solar flares. We show that the upward motion of the magnetic X-point tracing the filament eruption begins several minutes before the impulsive phase of the flare, where the explosive magnetic reconnection starts at the X-point magnetic field configuration located under the filament. No change occurs in the character of the motion of the X-point during the onset of the explosive magnetic reconnection. The upward speed of the X-point is about 110 km s-1 at the onset of the impulsive phase. We give an important condition leading to filament eruptions, which relate to the state of the current sheet under the filament, where the magnetic energy can be released.  相似文献

Among all the signatures of solar ejecta in interplanetary space, magnetic clouds are particularly interesting. We have shown that they are associated with solar mass ejections that involve not only coronal heights, but also chromospheric heights and so, they are almost always associated with low-altitude solar activity such as H flares or filament eruptions. As a magnetic cloud is a very large structure, and not all the ejecta found in the interplanetary medium are clouds, it is interesting to investigate the characteristics of the large-scale coronal magnetic structures in the regions where the activity leading to a cloud takes place. In this paper we use Hoeksema's potential field model of the solar magnetosphere to obtain the magnetic structure of the site of the solar events associated with 35 interplanetary magnetic clouds. The position of the related solar activity was determined from the location of the near-surface solar explosive events (flares and filament eruptions) associated with each cloud, obtained in our previous study. We find that the solar activity associated with interplanetary magnetic clouds occurs in regions of low-altitude, magnetically closed structures lying between higher helmets, or between the highest helmets and coronal holes, where the magnetic field lines are longitudinally oriented.  相似文献

Prefiare conditions, changes and events are loosely categorized as distinct, evolutionary or statistical. Distinct preflare phenomena are those for which direct physical associations with flares are implied. Also, they are not known to occur in a like manner during the absence of flares. These include the early stage of filament eruptions within active centers, preflare vortical structures, some transient X-ray emitting features, 5303 Å accelerating coronal arches, and increases in circular polarization at cm wavelengths. Evolutionary preflare changes are considered to be any long-term effect that may be related to the flare build-up even though the same changes may occur in the absence of flares. This category covers the development of current sheets or strongly sheared magnetic fields, evolving magnetic features, emerging flux regions, the development of satellite fields around sunspots, the evolution of reverse polarity field configurations, the merging of adjacent active centers, sunspot motions and the development of velocity patterns. Statistical preflare changes logically include both distinct and evolutionary preflare changes. However, in addition, there are preflare conditions and events that are not necessarily linked to the flare in either a direct physical or indirect evolutionary way. Such parameters or events that may only be statistically significant are certain magnetic field properties, the brightness of active centers at various wavelengths, the previous occurrence of flares and subflares, increased turbulence in filaments and certain radio events.  相似文献

Well-developed filament channels may be present in the solar atmosphere even when there is no trace of filament material inside them. Such magnetic systems with filament channels without filaments can result in coronal mass ejections that might appear to have no corresponding solar surface source regions. In this case study, we analyze CMEs on 9 August 2001 and 3 March 2011 and trace their origins to magnetic systems with filament channels containing no obvious filament material on the days around the eruptions.  相似文献

On 2012 July 11, two solar filaments were observed in the northeast of the solar disk and their eruptions due to the interaction between them are studied by using the data from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), Solar TErrestrial RElations Observatory (STEREO) and Global Oscillation Network Group (GONG). The eastern filament (F1) first erupted toward the northeast. During the eruption of F1, some plasma from F1 fell down and was injected to the North-East part of another filament (F2), and some plasma of F1 fell down to the northern region close to F2 and caused the plasma to brighten. Meanwhile, the North-East part of F2 first started to be active and rise, but did not erupt finally. Then the South-West part of F2 erupted successfully. Therefore, the F2’s eruption is a partial filament eruption. Two associated CMEs related to the eruptions were observed by STEREO/COR1. We find two possible reasons that lead to the instability and the eruption of F2. One main reason is that the magnetic loops overlying the two filaments were partially opened by the eruptive F1 and resulted in the instability of F2. The other is that the downflows from F1 might break the stability of F2.  相似文献

The Whole Heliosphere Interval (WHI) was an international observing and modeling effort to characterize the 3-D interconnected ??heliophysical?? system during this solar minimum, centered on Carrington Rotation 2068, March 20??C?April 16, 2008. During the latter half of the WHI period, the Sun presented a sunspot-free, deep solar minimum type face. But during the first half of CR 2068 three solar active regions flanked by two opposite-polarity, low-latitude coronal holes were present. These departures from the quiet Sun led to both eruptive activity and solar wind structure. Most of the eruptive activity, i.e., flares, filament eruptions and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), occurred during this first, active half of the interval. We determined the source locations of the CMEs and the type of associated region, such as active region, or quiet sun or active region prominence. To analyze the evolution of the events in the context of the global solar magnetic field and its evolution during the three rotations centered on CR 2068, we plotted the CME source locations onto synoptic maps of the photospheric magnetic field, of the magnetic and chromospheric structure, of the white light corona, and of helioseismological subsurface flows. Most of the CME sources were associated with the three dominant active regions on CR 2068, particularly AR 10989. Most of the other sources on all three CRs appear to have been associated with either isolated filaments or filaments in the north polar crown filament channel. Although calculations of the flux balance and helicity of the surface magnetic features did not clearly identify a dominance of one region over the others, helioseismological subsurface flows beneath these active regions did reveal a pronounced difference among them. These preliminary results suggest that the ??twistedness?? (i.e., vorticity and helicity) of subsurface flows and its temporal variation might be related to the CME productivity of active regions, similar to the relationship between flares and subsurface flows.

We propose a new model for the initiation of solar coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and CME-associated flares. The model is inferred from observations of a quiescent filament eruption in the north-western quadrant of the solar disk on 4 September 2000. The event was observed with the Siberian Solar Radio Telescope (5.7 GHz), the Nobeyama Radioheliograph (17 GHz) and SOHO/EIT and LASCO. Based on the observations, we suggest that the eruption could be caused by the interaction of two dextral filaments. According to our model, these two filaments merge together to form a dual-filament system tending to form a single long filament. This results in a slow upward motion of the dual-filament system. Its upward expansion is prevented by the attachment of the filaments to the photosphere by filament barbs as well as by overlying coronal arcades. The initial upward motion is caused by the backbone magnetic field (first driving factor) which connects the two merging filaments. Its magnetic flux increases slowly due to magnetic reconnection of the cross-interacting legs of these filaments. If a total length of the dual-filament system is large enough, then the filament barbs detach themselves from the solar surface due to magnetic reconnection between the barbs with oppositely directed magnetic fields. The detachment of the filament barbs completes the formation of the eruptive filaments themselves and determines the helicity sign of their magnetic fields. The appearance of a helical magnetic structure creates an additional upward-directed force (second driving factor). A combined action of these two factors causes acceleration of the dual-filament system. If the lifting force of the two factors is sufficient to substantially extend the overlying coronal magnetic arcade, then magnetic reconnection starts below the eruptive filament in accordance with the classical scheme, and the third driving factor comes into play.  相似文献

Preflare state
Discussion on the preflare state held at the Ottawa Flares 22 Workshop focused on the interpretation of solar magnetograms and of H filament activity. Magnetograms from several observatories provided evidence of significant build up of electric currents in flaring regions. Images of X-ray emitting structures provided a clear example of magnetic relaxation in the course of a flare. Emerging and cancelling magnetic fields appear to be important for triggering flares and for the formation of filaments, which are associated with eruptive flares. Filaments may become unstable by the build up of electric current helicity. Examples of heliform eruptive filaments were presented at the Workshop. Theoretical models linking filaments and flares are briefly reviewed.Report of Team 1, Flares 22 Workshop, Ottawa, May 25–28, 1993  相似文献

One-hundred fifty-six large-scale enhancements of X-ray emission from solar active regions were studied on full-disk filterheliograms to determine characteristic morphology and expansion rates for heated coronal plasma. The X-ray photographs were compared with H observations of flares, sudden filament disappearances, sprays and loop prominence systems (LPS). Eighty-one percent of the X-ray events were correlated with H filament activity, but only forty-four percent were correlated with reported H flares. The X-ray enhancements took the form of loops or arcades of loops ranging in length from 60 000 km to 520 000 km and averaging 15 000 km in width. Lifetimes ranged from 3 hr to >24 hr. Event frequency was 1.4 per day. X-ray loop arcades evolved from sharp-edged clouds in cavities vacated by rising H filaments. Expansion velocities of the loops were 50 km s-1 immediately after excitation and 1–10 km s-1 several hours later. These long-lived loop arcades are identified with LPS, and it is suggested that the loops outlined magnetic fields which were reconnecting after filament eruptions. Another class of X-ray enhanced loops stretched outside active regions and accompanied sprays or lateral filament ejections. H brightenings occurred where these loops intersected the chromosphere. Inferred excitation velocities along the loops ranged between 300 and 1200 km s-1. It is suggested that these loops outlined closed magnetic fields guiding slow mode shocks from flares and filament eruptions.  相似文献

Ring-like filaments have been detected on the spectroheliograms in the H-alpha line. Inside these filaments the magnetic field flux has a predominant polarity. Some of the dark filaments are connected by filament channels which can be seen at the limb either as (a) weak prominences or (b) dense low chromospheric features or (c) multi-channel system of matter flow between two prominences or (d) common quiescent prominences. The filament and the filament channel together form a continuous closed contour and outline the region of thef polarity particularly at the beginning of the solar cycle. The change in sign of the polar field of the Sun is associated with the drift of the filament band to high latitudes.  相似文献
