利用基于自校正和CLEAN算法的现代VLBI混合成图技术,对Pearson等人于1976年观测得到的类星体 3C 286在 18 cm波段上的 VLBI数据重新作了处理.由此得到的图像要大大好于最初的处理结果,也获得了更多的有用信息.用几个Gauss模型去拟合校正后的UV数据,发现中央亮区可以被分解为两个致密结构,这与后来的高分辨率观测相一致.与不同历元的VLBI观测结果相比较,发现这两个致密结构间的距离不但在同一时间随观测频率变化,而且很有可能在同一观测频率上随时间变化.  相似文献

We present VLA A-array observations at λ20, 6 and 2 cm and B-array observations at λ20 and 6 cm of the quasar B2 1320 + 299, which has a very unusual radio structure. In addition to a component, A, coincident with the quasar, there are two lobes of radio emission, B and C, on the same side of A. These are located at distances of -25 and 50 arcsec respectively from A. The present observations show that A has a flat-spectrum component coincident with the quasar and a weak outer component at a distance of-4 arcsec along PA - 100°. The morphology of B resembles a head-tail type of structure with its tail towards the north-east. The magnetic field lines in component B appear to follow the bend in the tail. Component C exhibits some extension towards the north-west. We discuss the possible nature of B2 1320 + 299 and suggest that while A appears to be an independent source, the relation between B and C, if they are associated at all, is unclear. Deep optical observations are essential to help clarify the situation.  相似文献

Multifrequency, high-resolution radio observations of the quasar 3C 254 using the Multi-Element Radio-linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) are presented. The quasar has a highly asymmetric radio structure, with the eastern component of the double-lobed structure being much closer to the nucleus and significantly less polarized than the western one. However, the two lobes are more symmetric in their total flux densities. The observations show the detailed structure of the hotspots which are very different on opposite sides of the radio core, reveal no radio jet and suggest that the oppositely directed jets may be intrinsically asymmetric.  相似文献

We discuss the changes in the amplitude of the correlation function of quasar clustering with the redshift. Using the new Hewitt-Burbidge QSO catalogue, we find from a statistical analysis of the quasar pairs that the positive results of quasar clustering are mainly contributed by low-redshift quasars. There is an obvious change in the quasar distribution at z = 2. There is no clustering for z > 2. The difference in clustering is not due to any selection effect on the brightness. The evidence is that quasar clustering evolved with cosmological time.  相似文献

Despite a general consensus in the astronomical community that all quasars are located at the distances implied by their redshifts, a number of observations still challenge this interpretation, possibly indicating that some subpopulation of quasars may harbour significant redshift components not related to the expansion of the Universe. It has been suggested that these objects may have been ejected from local galaxies and are likely to evolve into new galaxies themselves. Here, a test of such exotic scenarios is proposed, based on the spectral energy distribution of the galaxies hosting quasars with suspected ejection origin. Provided that the time-scales over which the ejected objects manifest themselves as quasars is short, one would in the framework of the ejection scenarios expect to find either no quasar host galaxy, a pseudo-host consisting of gas ionized by the quasar, or a host galaxy consisting of young stars only. It is argued that the spectral energy distributions corresponding to the last two options should differ significantly from that of most quasar host galaxies detected at low redshift so far, thus providing a potential test of the claimed existence of ejected quasars. A minimal implementation of this test, involving optical and near-infrared broad-band photometry, is suggested.  相似文献

We present results from a new XMM–Newton observation of the high-redshift quasar RX J1028.6 – 0844 at a redshift of 4.276. The soft X-ray spectral flattening, as reported by a previous study with ASCA , is confirmed to be present, with, however, a reduced column density when modelled by absorption. The inferred column density for absorption intrinsic to the quasar is  2.1(+0.4−0.3) × 1022  cm−2  for cold matter, and higher for ionized gas. The spectral flattening shows remarkable similarity with that of two similar object, namely GB 1428 + 4217 and PMN J0525 − 3343. The results improve upon those obtained from a previous short-exposure observation for RX J1028.6 – 0844 with XMM–Newton . A comparative study of the two XMM–Newton observations reveals a change in the power-law photon index from  Γ≃ 1.3  to 1.5 on time-scales of about one year. A tentative excess emission feature in the rest-frame 5–10 keV band is suggested, which is similar to that marginally suggested for GB 1428 + 4217.  相似文献

We present the results of a three-week daily monitoring campaign of the quasar 3C 279 by the X-ray satellites RXTE ROSAT . A cross-correlation provides no evidence for any time lag between the very similar soft and hard X-ray light curves, and the source shows no significant spectral variability over the observing period. There is no evidence to support the presence of a soft excess, with a 99 per cent upper limit on any such component of 25 per cent of the total observed luminosity in the 0.1–2 keV band (<3 × 1038 W). This fraction (but not the luminosity) is significantly lower than that of the soft excess observed in 3C 273.  相似文献

A number of deep, wide-field, near-infrared (NIR) surveys employing new infrared cameras on 4-m class telescopes are about to commence. These surveys have the potential to determine the fraction of luminous dust-obscured quasars that may have eluded surveys undertaken at optical wavelengths. In order to understand the new observations it is essential to make accurate predictions of surface densities and number–redshift relations for unobscured quasars in the NIR based on information from surveys at shorter wavelengths. The accuracy of the predictions depends critically on a number of key components. The commonly used single power-law representation for quasar spectral energy distributions (SEDs) is inadequate and the use of an SED incorporating the upturn in continuum flux at  λ∼ 12 000 Å  is essential. The presence of quasar host galaxies is particularly important over the rest-frame wavelength interval  8000 < λ < 16 000 Å  and we provide an empirical determination of the magnitude distribution of host galaxies using a low-redshift sample of quasars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 3 quasar catalogue. A range of models for the dependence of host galaxy luminosity on quasar luminosity is investigated, along with the implications for the NIR surveys. Even adopting a conservative model for the behaviour of host galaxy luminosity the number counts for shallow surveys in the K band increase by a factor of 2. The degree of morphological selection applied to define candidate quasar samples in the NIR is found to be an important factor in determining the fraction of the quasar population included in such samples.  相似文献

We present mid- and far-infrared photometry of the high-redshift     dusty quasar BR 1202−0725. The quasar was detected in the near-infrared, at a flux level     consistent with an average radio-quiet quasar at its redshift. Only upper limits for the emission were obtained in the far-infrared. These upper limits, when combined with data from ground-based telescopes, are the first direct evidence for a turnover in the far-infrared emission, and hence confirm that a blackbody dominates the spectral energy distribution at far-infrared wavelengths. This blackbody is most probably cool dust, constrained to have a temperature below 80 K, for a β of 1.5.  相似文献

We present JHKL ' photometry of a complete sample of steep-spectrum radio-loud quasars from the revised 3CR catalogue in the redshift range 0.65 z <1.20. After correcting for contributions from emission lines and the host galaxies, we investigate their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) around 1 μm. About 75 per cent of the quasars are tightly grouped in the plane of optical spectral index, α opt, versus near-infrared spectral index, α IR, with the median value of α opt close to the canonical value, and the median α IR slightly flatter. We conclude that the fraction of moderately obscured, red quasars decreases with increasing radio power, in accordance with the 'receding torus' model which can also explain the relatively flat median near-infrared spectra of the 3CR quasars. Two of the red quasars have inverted infrared spectral indices, and we suggest that their unusual SEDs might result from a combination of dust-scattered and transmitted quasar light.  相似文献

Rotational motions of twin quasar images due to the motion of a gravitational lens galaxy are studied. A weak gravity field and a point mass lens are assumed. Twin images of a quasar appear and rotate when a lens galaxy passes near a straight line connecting the observer with the quasar. The positions and velocities of the quasar images are calculated using various sets of parameters.Conclusions: (1) Quasar images move a few hundred milli-arc-seconds per year or more, if the lens galaxy passes within a thousandth parsec from the line connecting the observer with the quasar, (2) the distance between the galactic center and the quasar images is about ten kilo-parsec at the most.As an example, the velocities of 0957+561 A, B1 and B2 are calculated. Even the fastest case, they are 1.5, 1.8, and 1.6×10–5 milli-arc-second per year, respectively.Paper presented at the IAU Third Asian-Pacific Regional Meeting, held in Kyoto, Japan, between 30 September–6 October, 1984.  相似文献

The procedure of the construction of a sample of distant (z > 0.3) radio galaxies using NED, SDSS, and CATS databases for further application in statistical tests is described. The sample is assumed to be cleaned from objects with quasar properties. The near-infrared data of the quasar 3C273 are collected from available literature and are used to analyze its variability properties. The largest amplitudes of variations are ΔJ = 1.0, ΔH = 0.9, and ΔK = 0.86. The color indices are JH = 0.82, JK = 1.96, and HK = 1.13. Analysis with the discrete correlation function (DCF) method indicates that the variability between any two infrared bands is correlated without any time lag. The relation between the color index and brightness is also investigated and the result indicates that the spectrum steepens when the source first dims, while it flattens after the source has dimmed to a some extent, suggesting that the emission of 3C 273 at near-IR consists of at least two components. Low-frequency radio surveys are ideal for selecting orientation-independent samples of extragalactic sources because the sample members are selected by virtue of their isotropic steep-spectrum extended emission. We use the new 7C Redshift Survey along with the brighter 3CRR and 6C samples to investigate the fraction of objects with observed broad emission lines – the 'quasar fraction'– as a function of redshift and of radio and narrow-emission-line luminosity. We find that the quasar fraction is more strongly dependent upon luminosity (both narrow-line and radio) than it is on redshift. Above a narrow [O  ii ] emission-line luminosity of log10( L [O  ii ]/W)≳35 [or radio luminosity log10( L 151/W Hz−1 sr−1)≳ 26.5], the quasar fraction is virtually independent of redshift and luminosity; this is consistent with a simple unified scheme with an obscuring torus with a half-opening angle θ trans≈53°. For objects with less luminous narrow lines, the quasar fraction is lower. We show that this is not due to the difficulty of detecting lower luminosity broad emission lines in a less luminous, but otherwise similar, quasar population. We discuss evidence which supports at least two probable physical causes for the drop in quasar fraction at low luminosity: (i) a gradual decrease in θ trans and/or a gradual increase in the fraction of lightly reddened (0≲ A V ≲5) lines of sight with decreasing quasar luminosity; and (ii) the emergence of a distinct second population of low-luminosity radio sources which, like M87, lack a well-fed quasar nucleus and may well lack a thick obscuring torus.  相似文献

We have conducted ultra-deep optical and deep near-infrared observations of a field around the z =1.226 radio-quiet quasar 104420.8+055739 from the Clowes–Campusano LQG of 18 quasars at z ∼1.3, in search of associated galaxy clustering. Galaxies at these redshifts are distinguished by their extremely red colours, with I − K >3.75, and we find a factor ∼11 overdensity of such galaxies in a 2.25×2.25 arcmin2 field centred on the quasar. In particular, we find 15–18 galaxies that have colours consistent with being a population of passively evolving massive ellipticals at the quasar redshift. They form 'fingers' in the V − K K , I − K K colour–magnitude plots at V − K ≃6.9, I − K ≃4.3 comparable to the red sequences observed in other z ≃1.2 clusters. We find suggestive evidence for substructure among the red sequence galaxies in the K image, in the form of two compact groups, 40 arcsec to the north, and 60 arcsec to the south-east of the quasar. An examination of the wider optical images indicates that this substructure is significant, and that the clustering extends to form a large-scale structure 2–3  h −1 Mpc across. We find evidence for a high (≳50 per cent) fraction of blue galaxies in this system, in the form of 15–20 'red outlier' galaxies with I − K >3.75 and V − I <2.00, which we suggest are dusty, star-forming galaxies at the quasar redshift. Within 30 arcsec of the quasar we find a concentration of blue ( V − I <1) galaxies in a band that bisects the two groups of red sequence galaxies. This band of blue galaxies is presumed to correspond to a region of enhanced star formation. We explain this distribution of galaxies as the early stages of a cluster merger which has triggered both the star formation and the quasar.  相似文献

The physical nature of the material responsible for the high-velocity broad absorption line (BAL) features seen in a small fraction of quasar spectra has been the subject of debate since their discovery. This has been especially compounded by the lack of observational probes of the absorbing region. In this paper we examine the role of 'microlenses' in external galaxies in the observed variability in the profiles of BALs in multiply imaged quasars. Utilizing realistic models for both the BAL region and the action of an ensemble of microlensing masses, we demonstrate that stars at cosmological distances can provide an important probe of the physical state and structure of material at the heart of these complex systems. Applying these results to the macrolensed BAL quasar system H1413+117, the observed spectral variations are readily reproduced, but without the fine-tuning requirements of earlier studies which employ more simplistic models.  相似文献

The longstanding question of the extent to which the quasar population is affected by dust extinction, within host galaxies or galaxies along the line of sight, remains open. More generally, the spectral energy distributions of quasars vary significantly, and flux-limited samples defined at different wavelengths include different quasars. Surveys employing flux measurements at widely separated wavelengths are necessary to characterize fully the spectral properties of the quasar population. The availability of panoramic near-infrared detectors on large telescopes provides the opportunity to undertake surveys capable of establishing the importance of extinction by dust on the observed population of quasars. We introduce an efficient method for selecting K -band, flux-limited samples of quasars, termed 'KX' by analogy with the UVX method. This method exploits the difference between the power-law nature of quasar spectra and the convex spectra of stars: quasars are relatively brighter than stars at both short wavelengths (the UVX method) and long wavelengths (the KX method). We consider the feasibility of undertaking a large-area KX survey for damped Ly α galaxies and gravitational lenses using the planned UKIRT wide-field near-infrared camera.  相似文献

探索Blazar光变资料中的周期或准周期变化是1个有待深入研究的领域.由于光变资料的复杂性,目前寻找周期的算法还不够完善.文中以现代谱估计为基础,详细论述了自回归(Auto-regressive,AR)模型谱估计方法和最大熵谱估计的基本原理,分析了阶数选择对模型的重要影响,并把这些方法应用到类星体3C 279和BL Lac天体OJ287的光变周期分析中,得到它们的光变周期分别为7.14和11.76yr.通过验证,自回归 模型谱估计方法由于其分辨率高,可以作为1种较好的分析周期的方法.最后指出在应用谱估计分析Blazar天体的光变周期注意事项.  相似文献

The light variability is one of the main characteristics of blazar objects. Because of the complexity of their light curves, the present periodicity analysis methods are not yet perfect. Based on the modern spectral estimate theory, this paper has described in details the principles of the maximum entropy spectral estimate and autoregressive (AR) spectral estimate, analyzed the effect of the order number selection on the resultant model. Applying these methods to the periodicity analysis of the quasar 3C 279 and BL Lac object OJ 287, their light periods are obtained to be 7.14 and 11.76 yr, respectively. As is verified by experiments, the AR spectral estimate has a high resolution and is a rather good periodicity analysis method. Finally, the items noteworthy for the application of these spectrum estimation methods to the periodicity analysis of the light variations of blazars are mentioned.  相似文献
