High-redshift galaxies and quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) are most likely to be strongly lensed by intervening haloes between the source and the observer. In addition, a large fraction of lensed sources is expected to be seen in the submillimetre region, as a result of the enhanced magnification bias on the steep intrinsic number counts. We extend in three directions Blain's earlier study of this effect.
First, we use a modification of the Press–Schechter mass function and detailed lens models to compute the magnification probability distribution. We compare the magnification cross-sections of populations of singular isothermal spheres and Navarro, Frenk & White (NFW) haloes and find that they are very similar, in contrast to the image-splitting statistics which were recently investigated in other studies. The distinction between the two types of density profile is therefore irrelevant for our purposes.
Secondly, we discuss quantitatively the maximum magnification, μ max, that can be achieved for extended sources (galaxies) with realistic luminosity profiles, taking into account the possible ellipticity of the lensing potential. We find that μ max plausibly falls into the range     for sources of     effective radius at redshifts within     .
Thirdly, we apply our model for the lensing magnification to a class of sources following the luminosity evolution typical for a unified scheme of QSO formation. As a result of the peculiar steepness of their intrinsic number counts, we find that the lensed source counts at a fiducial wave length of 850 μm can exceed the unlensed counts by several orders of magnitude at flux densities ≳100 mJy, even with a conservative choice of the maximum magnification.  相似文献

The fraction of high-redshift sources which are multiply imaged by intervening galaxies is strongly dependent on the cosmological constant, and so can be a useful probe of the cosmological model. However its power is limited by various systematic (and random) uncertainties in the calculation of lensing probabilities, one of the most important of which is the dynamical normalization of elliptical galaxies. Assuming ellipticals' mass distributions can be modelled as isothermal spheres, the mass normalization depends on the velocity anisotropy, the luminosity density, the core radius and the area over which the velocity dispersion is measured. The differences in the lensing probability and optical depth produced by using the correct normalization can be comparable to the differences between even the most extreme cosmological models. The existing data are not sufficient to determine the correct normalization with enough certainty to allow lensing statistics to be used to their full potential. However, as the correct lensing probability is almost certainly higher than is usually assumed, upper bounds on the cosmological constant are not weakened by these possibilities.  相似文献

The ultraluminous broad absorption line quasar APM 08279+5255 is one of the most luminous systems known. Here, we present an analysis of its nuclear  CO(1–0)  emission. Its extended distribution suggests that the gravitational lens in this system is highly elliptical, probably a highly inclined disc. The quasar core, however, lies in the vicinity of a naked cusp, indicating that APM 08279+5255 is truly the only odd-image gravitational lens. This source is the second system for which the gravitational lens can be used to study structure on sub-kiloparsec scales in the molecular gas associated with the AGN host galaxy. The observations and lens model require CO distributed on a scale of ∼400 pc. Using this scale, we find that the molecular gas mass makes a significant, and perhaps dominant, contribution to the total mass within a couple of hundred parsecs of the nucleus of APM 08279+5255.  相似文献

We propose a method to remove the mass-sheet degeneracy that arises when the mass of galaxy clusters is inferred from gravitational shear. The method utilizes high-redshift standard candles that undergo weak lensing. Natural candidates for such standard candles are type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia).
When corrected with the light-curve shape (LCS), the peak magnitude of SNe Ia provides a standard candle with an uncertainty in apparent magnitude of Δ m ≃0.1–0.2. Gravitational magnification of a background SN Ia by an intervening cluster would cause a mismatch between the observed SN Ia peak magnitude compared with that expected from its LCS and redshift. The average detection rate for SNe Ia with a significant mismatch of ≥2Δ m behind a cluster at z ≃0.05–0.15 is about 1–2 supernovae per cluster per year at J , I , R ≲25–26.
Since SNe are point-like sources for a limited period, they can experience significant microlensing by massive compact halo objects (MACHOs) in the intracluster medium. Microlensing events caused by MACHOs of ∼10−4 M⊙ are expected to have time-scales similar to that of the SN light curve. Both the magnification curve by a MACHO and the light curve of a SN Ia have characteristic shapes that allow us to separate them. Microlensing events caused by MACHOs of smaller mass can unambiguously be identified in the SN light curve if the latter is continuously monitored. The average number of identifiable microlensing events per nearby cluster ( z ≲0.05) per year is ∼0.02 ( f /0.01), where f is the fraction of the cluster mass in MACHOs of masses 10−7< M macho/M⊙<10−4.  相似文献

The physical nature of the material responsible for the high-velocity broad absorption line (BAL) features seen in a small fraction of quasar spectra has been the subject of debate since their discovery. This has been especially compounded by the lack of observational probes of the absorbing region. In this paper we examine the role of 'microlenses' in external galaxies in the observed variability in the profiles of BALs in multiply imaged quasars. Utilizing realistic models for both the BAL region and the action of an ensemble of microlensing masses, we demonstrate that stars at cosmological distances can provide an important probe of the physical state and structure of material at the heart of these complex systems. Applying these results to the macrolensed BAL quasar system H1413+117, the observed spectral variations are readily reproduced, but without the fine-tuning requirements of earlier studies which employ more simplistic models.  相似文献

Our spatial and spectral analysis of a recent deep Chandra observation of H1413+117 confirms a microlensing event in a previous Chandra observation of this object performed about 5 years earlier. We present constraints on the structure of H1413+117 based on the time‐scale of this microlensing event. The analysis of the combined spectrum of the images indicates the presence of two emission line peaks at rest‐frame energies of 5.35 keV and 6.32 keV and detected at the ≳97% and ≳99% confidence levels, respectively. The double peaked Fe emission is fit well with an accretion disk‐line model, however, the best‐fit accretion disk model parameters are neither well constrained nor unique. Another possible interpretation of the Fe emission is fluorescent Fe emission from the back‐side of the wind. Additional observations are required to constrain better the model parameters. A new four-image gravitational lens system, B0712+472, has been discovered during the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey. This system consists of four flat-spectrum radio images that are also seen on a Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ) image, together with the lensing galaxy. We present MERLIN, VLA and VLBA maps and WHT spectra of the system as well as the HST images. The light distribution of the lensing galaxy is highly elongated and so too is the mass distribution deduced from modelling. We suggest a redshift of ∼1.33 for the lensed object; the lens redshift will require further investigation. The discovery of this new system further increases the ratio of four-image to two-image lens systems currently known, exacerbating problems of required ellipticity of matter distributions in lensing galaxies.  相似文献

Current, accumulating evidence for (mildly) relativistic blue‐ and red‐shifted absorption lines in AGNs is reviewed. XMM‐Newton and Chandra sensitive X‐ray observations are starting to probe not only the kinematics (velocity) but also the dynamics (accelerations) of highly ionized gas flowing in‐and‐out from, likely, a few gravitational radii from the black hole. It is thus emphasized that X‐ray absorption‐line spectroscopy provides new potential to map the accretion flows near black holes, to probe the launching regions of relativistic jets/outflows, and to quantify the cosmological feedback of AGNs. Prospects to tackle these issues with future high energy missions are briefly addressed. (© 2006 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Gravitational lensing of a gamma-ray burst (GRB) by a single point mass will produce a second, delayed signal. Several authors have discussed using microlensed GRBs to probe a possible cosmological population of compact objects. We analyse a closely related phenomenon: the effect of microlensing by low to medium optical depth in compact objects on the averaged observed light curve of a sample of GRBs. We discuss the cumulative measured flux as a function of time resulting from delays caused by microlensing by cosmological compact objects. The time-scale and curvature of this function describe unique values for the compact object mass and optical depth. For GRBs with durations larger than the detector resolution, limits could be placed on the mass and optical depth of cosmological compact objects. The method does not rely on the separation of lensed bursts from those that are spatially coincident.  相似文献

The longstanding question of the extent to which the quasar population is affected by dust extinction, within host galaxies or galaxies along the line of sight, remains open. More generally, the spectral energy distributions of quasars vary significantly, and flux-limited samples defined at different wavelengths include different quasars. Surveys employing flux measurements at widely separated wavelengths are necessary to characterize fully the spectral properties of the quasar population. The availability of panoramic near-infrared detectors on large telescopes provides the opportunity to undertake surveys capable of establishing the importance of extinction by dust on the observed population of quasars. We introduce an efficient method for selecting K -band, flux-limited samples of quasars, termed 'KX' by analogy with the UVX method. This method exploits the difference between the power-law nature of quasar spectra and the convex spectra of stars: quasars are relatively brighter than stars at both short wavelengths (the UVX method) and long wavelengths (the KX method). We consider the feasibility of undertaking a large-area KX survey for damped Ly α galaxies and gravitational lenses using the planned UKIRT wide-field near-infrared camera.  相似文献
