Coal seams and culm banks associated with mine fires in the anthracite region of eastern Pennsylvania have been burning for decades. Many of the fires may have ignited by spontaneous combustion or by the burning of trash. Minerals associated with the combustion of anthracite form by the condensation of gas exhaled through surficial gas vents or anthracite smokers. A Pressure-Temperature (P-T) stability diagram is constructed for the condensation of orthorhombic sulfur from anthracite gas using Thermodynamic Loop Analysis (TL analysis). This method of analyzing chemical systems incorporates Kirchhoff's Law into a four step procedure structured around a closed thermodynamic cycle or thermodynamic loop. The four steps, referred to us The Four S S of Thermodynamic Loop Analysis, include: (1) Set Up—graphical characterization of the problem. (2) Sum—the application of thermodynamic principles. (3) Substitute—the use of materials data available from the literature, and (4) Solve—computation of one or more variables. The example presented demonstrates that thermodynamic loops can incorporate any number of polymorphic phase transformations. In addition, thermodynamic loop analysis is applicable to any geologic process involving the condensation of minerals from a gas. The stability diagram derived by TL analysis may have applicability in monitoring the release of sulfur gas into the atmosphere.  相似文献

The concept of space is one of the most fundamental of geographical concepts. There is no work in geography that does not certain it. Nevertheless, geography has not as yet formulated an explicit and unambiguous definition of geographical space. This fact has had negative consequences for geographical theory, methodology and application. In the effort of contributing to its elimination we will try to outline the basic connotations of the concept.The concept of geographical space is a relational one. It acquires meaning and sense only when related to other concepts. The concept of space may be conceived as a supplement to things, i.e. substantively conceived objects. Space conceived in this way is the synonym of emptiness. The concept of space may be also conceived in relation ti individual landscape elements as their environments. Space conceived in this way has the character of a field of force. And, finally, space may be conceived also with respect to the totality of landscape elements, i.e. the system expressed by the term synergic. It is only this third variant of space which should be understood as the geographical space in the full menaing of the term. It is only this conception of geographical space as the space filled with qualities in relations and proportions that is considered as one of the basic prerequisites for the formulation of the theory of geography as science capable of prediction and thus also of practical utilization.  相似文献

Summary The discipline of geography, both ancient and new, is periodically subject to centrifugal tendencies, threatening its integrity and cohesion as a subject. From very different traditions, this question of philosophical unity has lain at the heart of many controversies and re-examinations of the value and place of geography in the Soviet Union and the United States in recent years, both as an academic subject and with respect to its practical applicability. This article attempts a comparative and personal view of what has happened to geography, mainly over the last quarter of a century, in these two countries, focussed on this unity question.  相似文献

Metamorphic rocks at Milos are known in small outcrops beneath the volcanic formations, as xenoliths in the Traphores volcanic breccia and as pebbles in the Paleochora Quaternary deposits. These rocks seem to belong to three different metamorphic units which probably have intricate relationships in the basement: — the eclogites unit shows garnetjadeite or garnet-omphacite primary associations, with apparently late crystallization of lawsonite phenoblasts an recrystallization features at relatively low temperatures; — the glaucophane schist unit exhibits Jadeite+quartz or glaucophane+lawsonite primary mineralogy; — the greenschist facies unit shows low-pressure main assemblages, most generally developed after high-pressure events. The two former units involve tholeiitic meta-igneous rocks, having been spilitized before metamorphism; they generally suffered more or less advanced recrystallization features in the low-pressure field of the greenschist facies. The third unit shows only meta-sedimentary rocks, with the sole exception of one single meta-doleritic pebble having calk-alkaline affinities.Petrological and mineralogical studies, based upon 15 bulk-rock compositions and 178 probe-analysed data points, lead to suspect at least 2, perhaps 3, different metamorphic events rather than one single metamorphic evolution, to account for the 3 U distinguished. From the observation of the mineralogical assemblages and their evolution, the former events (stages 1 and 2) could be related to rapid subduction of ocean-floor or back-arc basalts, whereas, during the latter event (stage 3), the rocks experienced crystallization conditions involving both decreasing pressures and increasing temperatures.  相似文献

A three-mode principal components method allows visualization of the structural or taxonomic relationships within three-way data tables. The fundamental model includes three sets of eigenvectors and a core matrix relating the principal components of each mode. Formal relationships between the method and the usual principal components formulation allow calculation of loadings and scores for each mode; taken with the core matrix, these provide a number of points of view in graphical analysis of three-mode data. The model compares favorably with alternative formulations in terms of simplicity of computation, generality, and symmetry of operation among the modes. The Bosworgey granite cusp forms an apical portion of the concealed northern extension of the Tregonning-Godolphin granite ridge. It is characterised by unusually high values of B, P, Mn, Fe, As, Cu, Nb, Ta, Bi, Sn, W, U and S which are present largely as tourmaline, apatite, pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, bismuth, columbite, cassiterite, wolframite and uraninite; and low levels of Zr, Hf, Ti and REE present in zircon, ilmenite and monazite. The granite is classified as Sn and W specialised (Tischendorf, 1974) and it belongs to the ilmenite series of Japanese workers. The classification of Chappell and White (1974) (S and I type granites) is shown to be inapplicable to Cornubian rocks although the Bosworgey samples show characteristics of S type granites. The accessory mineral assemblages are typical of high temperature lodes (cassiterite, wolframite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite) and the assamblage is concluded to be the cusp analogue of hypothermal lodes produced by extreme differentiation and concentration of volatiles. It is speculated that such granites could provide the parent material for the mesothermal crosscourse mineralisation (pitchblende, bismuth, pyrite, galena, sphalerite).  相似文献

This paper analyses the meeting between the international petroleum industry and two local communities. The building of an oil terminal in a local community is both a major event, and a generator of processes on the local level. Three different angles is used to enlighten these processes; categorised as as place, people and mind. The place analysis consentrates on the effects on population and workforce development, the people analysis look at the institutional and planning processes, and the mind analysis the effects on the feeling of local identification. The paper demonstrates that local factors are of crucial importance even for the international petroleum industry.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the history and consequences of two large scale hydroelectric projects in Amazonian Brazil. The argument makes three points. First, environmental impacts of such projects are inseparable from issues of human rights, regional economic development, and social justice. The implication of this view is that another development, something quite different from the industrial ideal of modernization, is necessary in Amazonia and elsewere.Second, analytical fragmentation of problems into specialist concerns with such topics as ecology (often only meaning wildlife), environment (often concerned only with soil erosion and regional climate), and human rights (sometimes only focusing on the rights of indigenous people, not small farmer migrants tempted to settle in such areas) is mirrored by a fragmented, and therefore weak, resistance to hydroelectric development. The paper traces the early signs of a more unified resistance movement capable of overcoming these special interests and fragmentation.Third, the paper provides data on an economic monstrosity. The known palaeontological and stratigraphical evidence is used as a basis for the construction of maps of the continents showing the extent of their inundation by the sea in Sakmarian time in the Upper Palaeozoic. In the northern hemisphere apart from India the evidence is sufficiently reliable to give reasonable maps, and the great extent of the inundations suggests that the climate would be considerably modified from that of today; no undoubted Sakmarian glacials occur there. In Southern continents and India, the Gondwana biogeographical province has made correlation with the northern continents controversial, but reasons are given for assuming that Gondwana glacial deposits were at least in part Sakmarian; the resultant maps show that the Gondwana land surfaces were but little reduced in area, and that the main glacials (except for India) lie within a belt between 40 S and 20 S. Present lack of knowledge of Sakmarian conditions in Antarctica makes reconstructions of climatic belts too hazardous for possible use in enunciating or checking hypotheses of continental drift and polar wandering.  相似文献

The perspective of the paper is that of urban metabolism which views cities, metaphorically, as metabolic processes which take in people, food, resources, and energy, transform these into a distinctive quality of life, and emit people, products, and wastes. The paper focuses on urban food metabolism, by using the concept of the food system which includes the sub-systems of production, supply, distribution and consumption of food. An understanding of the irregular coordination polyhedra exhibited by the M2 cations in clinopyroxenes is of prime importance in connection with the behaviour of solid solutions and polymorphism in pyroxenes.As shown by unfolding the silica chains in pigeonite, cations with octahedral stereochemistry like Mg++and Fe++ cause kinking of the silica chains, whereas larger cations like Ca++and Na+have an opposite namely straightening effect. This is a probable factor causing immiscibility in the Mg++-Ca++ solid solutions in pyroxenes. In pyroxene structures with kinked silica chains the arrangement of oxygen atoms approaches close packing; consequently different stacking sequences will be energetically possible leading to polymorphism in pyroxenes.When Pauling's electrostatic valence rule is applied to clinopyroxenes, the charge balance will be exceedingly improved if effective coordination number of M2 cation is assigned and if the distortions of M 2 coordination polyhedron is considered.  相似文献

Minitope coral islands represent one third of the islands located in the tropical Indo-Pacific. Subsistence farming and extensive agriculture dominate the traditional structure of income. As the lack of natural resources, infrastructure and capital restrict the developmental changes, the islands' natural environment has been utilized as economic potential. Planning and realization of land use systems introduced have, however, often been based on an insufficient data basis and have often inadequately considered the consequences of human impacts on the natural environment and its controlling factors. The result was environmental degradation and ecological destruction, affecting also the population's socioeconomic situation and in some cases rendering alternative land use impossible. Therefore, the long-term utilization of coral islands and, hence, the economic development of those countries require a specific development strategy. Based on the environmental and socioeconomic consequences of touristic utilization of coral islands in the Maldivian Archipelago, the model for a sustainable development strategy and its aims are derived, and the objectives, the conceptual structure, and the way of establishing them organizationally and administratively are presented.  相似文献

Imprecise variogram parameters are modeled with fuzzy set theory. The fit of a variogram model to experimental variograms is often subjective. The accuracy of the fit is modeled with imprecise variogram parameters. Measurement data often are insufficient to create good experimental variograms. In this case, prior knowledge and experience can contribute to determination of the variogram model parameters. A methodology for kriging with imprecise variogram parameters is developed. Both kriged values and estimation variances are calculated as fuzzy numbers and characterized by their membership functions. Besides estimation variance, the membership functions are used to create another uncertainty measure. This measure depends on both homogeneity and configuration of the data.  相似文献

Major and trace element data of samples from the approximately 590 Ma Grenville dyke swarm, in the southeastern parts of the Canadian Shield, were used to evaluate the extent of crustal contamination of the dyke magma and to model its probable mantle source. The dyke rocks are mostly saturated, quartz tholeiites. A few samples represent transitional basalts. Their overall chemistries are similar to those of continental flood basalts. Their compositions resemble those of liquids initially produced in the garnet peridotite mantle zone and then subjected to polybaric fractionation. However, fractionation models fail to mass-balance Ti, Fe, K, and P. Geochemical and isotopic criteria indicate that crustal contamination was minimal. The incompatible elements Zr, Y, K, Rb, Nb, V, Ta, Hf, and Th show hyperbolic elemental ratio-ratio distributions indicative of mixing between two end-members. One end-member has elemental ratios similar to those of a depleted N-MORB source and the second of a P-MORB i.e. ertile or plume MORB source. The more enriched dyke compositions can be successfully reproduced by mixing models in the ratio of 6:1 between the most depleted MORB-like dyke magma and a liquid composition similar to metasomatic glass veinlets coexisting with mica peridotite mantle xenoliths, and subsequent crystal fractionation. The Grenville dykes are probably a synrift swarm that was emplaced along a rift arm related to an Iapetan rrr triple junction that is thought to have formed over a mantle plume. The chemistry of the dyke swarm is consistent with its derivation from a plume head, in that the minor enriched source can be identified with plume-source mantle and the major depleted source with entrained mantle. The magma probably originated in the upper cooler parts of the plume head.  相似文献

Though over four-fifths of Indian population is Hindu, there are sizeable numbers of other religious groups: Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain and other religion (mainly aboriginal animists). Hindus are spread out all over the country with declining or negligible concentration at the southern, northeastern and northwestern parts of the country. Sikhs are concentrated in Punjab; Muslims have majority in the northwestern Kashmir and Lakhadweep; Buddhists compose over 50% population in Western Kashmir, immediately south of it and Sikkim; Mixed religious areas are in the northeastern and southwestern tip of the country. By applying factor analysis technique it is possible to delineate religious regions of India with five major classes: Mainly Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Buddhist and Mixed. There are several pockets where Hindus form the main religious group, but Muslims, Christians and others are secondary.  相似文献

Summary A conspicuous feature of arendalites is an unusually low content of K, which can be contrasted to a normal K content in surrounding gneisses, migmatites and related granitic rocks. This feature could be explained by the extraction of granitophile elements by partial melting in the deep crust, but it is suggested that the lack of strong tectonic deformation and the close correlation of the major-element chemical composition of acid arendalites with that of the Norwegian Precambrian rocks requires another explanation, namely a highly selective process controlling the migration of K.The Tromöy rocks are polymetamorphic. Evidence of a post-or late-kinematic event of lower grade is given mainly by the mobilization of limited K-rich masses and by the structural state of the alkali-feldspar in the formation surrounding the arendalitic complex.

Zusammenfassung Ein hervorstechendes Kennzeichen der Arendalite ist ihr ungewöhnlich niedriger Kaligehalt, der einem normalen Kaligehalt der sie umgebenden Gneise, Migmatite und verwandter granitischer Gesteine gegenübergestellt werden kann. Die Entziehung granitophiler Elemente bei der teilweisen Aufschmelzung in der tiefen Kruste könnte als Erklärung fur dieses Charakteristikum dienen; das Fehlen starker tektonischer Deformationen und die starke Korrelation der Hauptelemente in den sauren Arendaliten und den präkambrischen Gesteinen von Norwegen verlangen jedoch eine andere Erklärung, nämlich einen sehr selektiven Prozeß, welcher die Kaliwanderung regelt.Die Gesteine von Tromöy sind polymetamorph. Beweise für ein post-oder spätkinematisches Ereignis niedrigeren Metamorphosegrades liefern vor allem die Mobilisierung lokaler K-reicher Massen und der Ordnungszustand der Alkalifeldspäte, die sich in der den arendalitischen Komplex umgebenden Formation befinden.

In this paper, we describe two methods of discrimination based on MSE ratio and regression, respectively, and an algorithm of orthogonally stepwise discrimination. The method is not limited by the assumption that the sample covariance matrix is not ill-conditioned or singular, and by any assumption about the distribution of each population as well. So, it has wide range of application to various problems, particularly, to the problem of discrimination with both quantitative and qualitative variables. After variables are selected in the procedure of stepwise discrimination, they need not be rejected. Several examples have been calculated by using the method, and the results are quite satisfying.  相似文献

The cultivation of early vegetables has altered the agrarian regions of the Mediterranean coast. Even if this restructuring process has already been completed in many countries, it can still be observed in Turkey. The development on the S coast of Turkey, where in 1985 a total of 113 villages with winter vegetable cultivation were studied, serves as an example. Hot-house cultivation was introduced here in glass greenhouses near Antalya around 1940 and spread only slowly along the S coast. An accelerated increase in the land used for early season vegetables was triggered off by the technical innovation of under-plastic cultivation (plastic greenhouses, plastic tunnels) around 1965. The partial innovations glass greenhouse — plastic greenhouse — plastic tunnel were, because of their different capital intensity, adopted by different agrarian social groups. Today glass greenhouse-, plastic greenhouse-and plastic tunnel-regions have formed which have recently undergone a considerable degree of intermingling. The diffusion process of early vegetables in total, like that of the partial innovations, did not happen continuously, rather the changes were carried erratically over wide distances; the process of intermingling also showed such a form of spreading. A sociopsychological motive can be offered as a basis for this type of spreading, for which the term spasmodic diffusion is suggested: the comparatively high degree of isolation of the Turkish village communities from the outside world and their strong orientation inwards lead inevitably to isolation of innovations. Derived from this is the thesis that other spontaneous innovations in similarly structured agrarian regions also always spread erratically (spasmodic).  相似文献

Historically, the characterization of the internal energy of a simple gas is based on free expansion experiments and imprecise use of the word function, which is rigorously defined in mathematics. Univariable equations of state show that the internal energy of simple monatomic, diatomic, and polyatomic gases can be expressed as a function of temperature only. However, multivariable equations of state derived from composite functions confirm that the internal energy of these gases can in each situation also be expressed as a function of pressure and volume only. It is essential that the mathematical definition of the word function be adhered to in science because it is fundamental for the formulation of the calculus, a mathematical tool essential for solving a variety of thermodynamics problems.  相似文献
