The greenhouse effect is calculated for a series of model atmospheres of Titan containing varying proportions of methane, hydrogen, helium, and ammonia. The pressure induced transitions of hydrogen and methane are the major sources of infrared opacity. For each model atmosphere we first computed its temperature structure with a radiative-convective equilibrium computer program and then generated its brightness temperature spectrum to compare with observed values. This comparison indicates that the methane-to-hydrogen ratio is 1?.67+2, the surface pressure is at least 0.4atm, and the surface temperature at least 150°K. In addition, except possibly close to the surface, the amount of ammonia is far less than the saturation vapor value. Large amounts of helium may also be present. Many of the successful model atmospheres have methane condensation clouds in the upper troposphere, which help reconcile spectroscopic gas abundances and the observed ultraviolet albedo of Titan with the gas amounts required for the greenhouse effect. The occurrence of large amounts of hydrogen may be a prerequisite for the occurrence of large amounts of methane in the atmosphere and vice versa. This hypothesis may help explain why Titan is the only satellite in our solar system known to have an atmosphere.  相似文献

We analyze the temperature dependence of the abundances of the chemical elements Si, Ca, Cr, and Fe in the atmospheres of normal, metallic-line (Am), magnetic peculiar (Ap), and pulsating magnetic peculiar (roAp) stars in the range 6000–15000 K. The Cr and Fe abundances in the atmospheres of Ap stars increase rapidly as the temperature rises from 6000 to 9000–10000 K. Subsequently, the Cr abundance decreases to values that exceed the solar abundance by an order of magnitude, while the Fe abundance remains enhanced by approximately +1.0 dex compared to the solar value. The temperature dependence of the abundances of these elements in the atmospheres of normal and Am stars is similar in shape, but its maximum is several orders of magnitude lower than that observed for Ap stars. In the range 6000–9500 K, the observed temperature dependences for Ap stars are satisfactorily described in terms of element diffusion under the combined action of gravitational settling and radiative acceleration. It may well be that diffusion also takes place in the atmospheres of normal stars, but its efficiency is very low due to the presence of microturbulence. We show that the magnetic field has virtually no effect on the Cr and Fe diffusion in Ap stars in the range of effective temperatures 6000–9500 K. The Ca abundance and its variation in the atmospheres of Ap stars can also be explained in terms of the diffusion model if we assume the existence of a stellar wind with a variable moderate rate of ~(2–4) × 10? 15M yr?1.  相似文献

In this paper, we use a statistical thermodynamic approach to quantify the efficiency with which clathrates on the surface of Titan trap noble gases. We consider different values of the Ar, Kr, Xe, CH4, C2H6 and N2 abundances in the gas phase that may be representative of Titan's early atmosphere. We discuss the effect of the various parameters that are chosen to represent the interactions between the guest species and the ice cage in our calculations. We also discuss the results of varying the size of the clathrate cages. We show that the trapping efficiency of clathrates is high enough to significantly decrease the atmospheric concentrations of Xe and, to a lesser extent, of Kr, irrespective of the initial gas phase composition, provided that these clathrates are abundant enough on the surface of Titan. In contrast, we find that Ar is poorly trapped in clathrates and, as a consequence, that the atmospheric abundance of argon should remain almost constant. We conclude that the mechanism of trapping noble gases via clathration can explain the deficiency in primordial Xe and Kr observed in Titan's atmosphere by Huygens, but that this mechanism is not sufficient to explain the deficiency in Ar.  相似文献

Chemical equilibrium calculations on the stability of pure and dissolved graphite and cohenite (Fe3C), several other carbides, and several carbonates have been carried out for a system with solar elemental abundances over a very wide range of temperature and pressure. The calculated abundances of condensed carbon compounds are similar to the observed inventories on Earth and Venus, but fully 10 times smaller than the minimum carbon abundance found in ordinary chondrites. The total carbon content of most iron meteorites is compatible with their origin as a cooling FeNiCSP solution which was saturated with dissolved carbon at the solidus, such as would be produced by melting an ordinary chondrite, not by direct condensation from or equilibrium with the primitive solar nebula. It is argued that the carbon content of Mars need not be appreciably greater than that of the Earth. Material with even lower formation temperatures than Mars, such as the primitive material in the asteroid belt, may retain substantially more carbon as disequilibrium polymeric organic matter, possibly by the Fischer-Tropsch mechanism favored by Anders. Carbonates are not found as equilibrium products in a solar-composition system, and are probably secondary alteration products. CaCO3 might, however, persist in a solar-composition gas at temperatures below 460°K and pressures below 10?6.6 bar. The most stable condensed carbon compounds are found to be graphite, Fe3C, and possibly TiC, all in solid solution in the metal phase.  相似文献

The presence of heavy elements in the atmospheres of the hottest H-rich DA white dwarfs has been the subject of considerable interest. While theoretical calculations can demonstrate that radiative forces, counteracting the effects of gravitational settling, can explain the detections of individual species, the predicted abundances do not accord well with observation. However, accurate abundance measurements can only be based on a thorough understanding of the physical structure of the white dwarf photospheres, which has proved elusive. Recently, the availability of new non-local thermodynamic equilibrium model atmospheres with improved atomic data has allowed self-consistent analysis of the extreme ultraviolet (EUV), far UV and optical spectra of the prototypical object G191-B2B. Even so, the predicted and observed stellar fluxes remain in serious disagreement at the shortest wavelengths (below ≈190 Å), while the inferred abundances remain largely unaltered. We show here that the complete spectrum of G191-B2B can be explained by a model atmosphere where Fe is stratified, with increasing abundance at greater depth. This abundance profile may explain the difficulties in matching observed photospheric abundances, usually obtained by analyses using homogeneous model atmospheres, to the detailed radiative levitation predictions, particularly as the latter are only strictly valid for regions deeper than where the EUV/far UV lines and continua are formed. Furthermore, the relative depletion of Fe in the outer layers of the atmosphere may be evidence for radiatively driven mass-loss in G191-B2B.  相似文献

We present 20-μm photometry of Uranus and Neptune which confirms the presence of a temperature inversion in the lower stratospheres in both planets. We find the brightness temperature difference between 17.8 and 19.6 μm to be 0.8 ± 0.5°K for Uranus and 1.8 ± 0.6°K for Neptune. These results indicate that the temperature inversions on both planets are weaker than previously thought. Comparison to model atmospheres by J. Appleby [Ph.D. thesis, SUNY at Stony Brook 1980] indicates that the temperature inversions can be understood as arising from heating by the absorption of sunlight by CH4 and aerosols. However, the stratospheric CH4 mixing ratio on Neptune must be higher than that at the temperature minimum.  相似文献

CH4 has been observed on Mars both by remote sensing and in situ during the past 15 yr. It could have been produced by early Mars serpentinization processes that could also explain the observed Martian remanent magnetic field. Assuming a cold early Mars, a cryosphere could trap such CH4 as clathrates in stable form at depth. The maximum storage capacity of such a clathrate cryosphere has been recently estimated to be 2 × 1019 to 2 × 1020 moles of methane. We estimate how large amounts of serpentinization‐derived CH4 stored in the cryosphere have been released into the atmosphere during the Noachian and the early Hesperian. Due to rapid clathrate dissociation and photochemical conversion of CH4 to H2, these episodes of massive CH4 release may have resulted in transient H2‐rich atmospheres, at typical levels of 10–20% in a background 1–2 bar CO2 atmosphere. The collision‐induced heating effect of H2 present in such an atmosphere has been shown to raise the surface temperature above the water freezing point. We show how local and rapid destabilization of the cryosphere can be induced by large events (such as the Hellas Basin or Tharsis bulge formation) and lead to such releases. Our results show that the early Mars cryosphere had a sufficient CH4 storage capacity to have maintained H2‐rich transient atmospheres during a total time period up to several million years or tens of million years, having potentially contributed to the formation of valley networks during the Noachian/early Hesperian.  相似文献

We used chemical equilibrium and chemical kinetic calculations to model chemistry of the volatiles released by heating different types of carbonaceous, ordinary and enstatite chondritic material as a function of temperature and pressure. Our results predict the composition of atmospheres formed by outgassing during accretion of the Earth and other terrestrial planets. Outgassing of CI and CM carbonaceous chondritic material produces H2O-rich (steam) atmospheres in agreement with the results of impact experiments. However, outgassing of other types of chondritic material produces atmospheres dominated by other gases. Outgassing of ordinary (H, L, LL) and high iron enstatite (EH) chondritic material yields H2-rich atmospheres with CO and H2O being the second and third most abundant gases. Outgassing of low iron enstatite (EL) chondritic material gives a CO-rich atmosphere with H2, CO2, and H2O being the next most abundant gases. Outgassing of CV carbonaceous chondritic material gives a CO2-rich atmosphere with H2O being the second most abundant gas. Our results predict that the atmospheres formed during accretion of the Earth and Mars were probably H2-rich unless the accreted material was dominantly CI and CM carbonaceous chondritic material. We also predict significant amounts of S, P, Cl, F, Na, and K in accretionary atmospheres at high temperatures (1500-2500 K). Finally, our results may be useful for interpreting spectroscopic observations of accreting extrasolar terrestrial planets.  相似文献

The occultation of a bright (K∼6) infrared star by Neptune revealed a central flash at two stations and provided accurate measurements of the limb position at these and several additional stations. We have fitted this data ensemble with a general model of an oblate atmosphere to deduce the oblateness e and equatorial radius a0 of Neptune at the 1-μbar pressure level, and the position angle pn of the projected spin axis. The results are e=0.0209±0.0014, a0=25269±10 km, pn=20.1°±1°. Parameters derived from fitting to the limb data alone are in excellent agreement with parameters derived from fitting to central flash data alone (E. Lellouch, W.B. Hubbard, B. Sicardy, F. Vilas, and P. Bouchet, 1986, Nature 324, 227–231), and the principal remaining source of uncertainty appears to be the Neptune-centered declination of the Earth at the time of occultation. As an alternative to the methane absorption model proposed by Lellouch et al., we explain an observed reduction in the central flash intensity by a decrease in temperature from 150 to 135°K as the pressure rises from 1 to 400 μbar. Implications of the oblateness results for Neptune interior models are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The theoretical disk brightness temperature spectra for Uranus are computed and compared with the observed microwave spectrum. It is shown that the emission observed at short centimeter wavelengths originates deep below the region where ammonia would ordinarily begin to condense. We demonstrate that this result is inconsistent with a wide range of atmospheric models in which the partial pressure of NH3 is given by the vapor-pressure equation in the upper atmosphere. It is estimated that the ammonia mixing ratio must be less than 10?6 in the 150 to 200°K temperature range. This is two orders of magnitude less than the expected mixing ratio based on solar abundances. The evidence for this depletion and a possible explanation are discussed.  相似文献

The trapping and release of H2, CO, CO2, CH4, Ar, Ne, and N2 by amorphous water ice was studied experimentally under dynamic conditions, at low temperatures starting at 16°K, with gas pressure of 5 × 10?8?10?6 Torr. CO, CH4, Ar, and N2 were found to be released in three or four distinct temperature ranges, each resulting from a different trapping mechanism: (a) 30–55°K, where the gas frozen on the water ice evaporates; (b) 135–155°K, where gas is squeezed out of the water ice during the transformation of amorphous ice to cubic ice; (c) 165–190°K, where gas and water are released simultaneously, probably by the evaporation of a clathrate hydrate, and, occasionally (d) 160–175°K, where deeply buried gas is released during the transformation of cubic ice to hexagonal ice. If the third range is indeed due to clathrate formation, CO was found to form this compound. CO2 did not form a clathrate under the experimental conditions. Excess hydrogen did not affect the occlusion of other gases. Hydrogen itself was trapped only at 16°K. Neon was not trapped at 25°K. With cubic ice, the only trapping mechanism is freezing of gas on the ice surface. No fractionation between the gas phase and the ice was observed with a mixture of CO and Ar. Massive ejection of ice grains was observed during the evaporation of the gas in three (a,c,d) out of the four ranges. The experimental results are used to explain several cometary phenomena, especially those occurring at large heliocentric distances, and are applied also to Titan's atmospheric composition and to the possible ejection of ice grains from Enceladus.  相似文献

Abstract— The abundances of alkali elements in the Earth's core are predicted by assuming that accretion of the Earth started from material similar in composition to enstatite chondrites and that enstatite achondrites (aubrites) provide a natural laboratory to study core-mantle differentiation under extremely reducing conditions. If core formation on the aubrite parent body is comparable with core formation on the early Earth, it is found that 2600 (±1000) ppm Na, 550 (±260) ppm K, 3.4 (±2.1) ppm Rb, and 0.31 (±0.24) ppm Cs can reside in the Earth's core. The alkali-element abundances are consistent with those predicted by independent estimates based on nebula condensation calculations and heat flow data.  相似文献

A helium model atom that includes 55 He I levels and the He II ground level in a detailed consideration has been constructed to investigate the departures from local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) in the formation of helium lines in stars with effective temperatures from 9300 to 20 000 K. For eight stars with effective temperatures from 9380 to 17 500 K the helium abundance has been determined from He I lines. The neutral helium lines in B stars cannot be described under LTE conditions using the common helium abundance. Furthermore, the profiles of several lines cannot be described in terms of the LTE approach at all. In contrast, a satisfactory coincidence of the theoretical and observed profiles for the entire set of helium lines observed in a wide spectral range can be achieved using virtually the same helium abundance by taking into account the departures from LTE. The LTE and non-LTE helium abundances can differ by up to a factor of 2–3, depending on the stellar parameters. The higher the stellar temperature, the stronger the departures from LTE. As a rule, the lines in the blue spectral region are less affected by non- LTE effects. In the atmospheres of six stars the helium abundance corresponds, within the error limits, to the present-day solar value. A helium underabundance is observed in the atmospheres of Sirius and HD 72660 classified as hot Am stars.  相似文献

Earth and Titan are two planetary bodies formed far from each other. Nevertheless the chemical composition of their atmospheres exhibits common indications of being produced by the accretion, plus ulterior in-situ processing of cometary materials. This is remarkable because while the Earth formed in the inner part of the disk, presumably from the accretion of rocky planetesimals depleted in oxygen and exhibiting a chemical similitude with enstatite chondrites, Titan formed within Saturn's sub-nebula from oxygen- and volatile-rich bodies, called cometesimals. From a cosmochemical and astrobiological perspective, the study of the H, C, N, and O isotopes on Earth and Titan could be the key to decipher the processes occurred in the early stages of formation of both planetary bodies. The main goal of this paper is to quantify the presumable ways of chemical evolution of both planetary bodies, in particular the abundance of CO and N2 in their early atmospheres. In order to do that the primeval atmospheres and evolution of Titan and Earth have been analyzed from a thermodynamic point of view. The most relevant chemical reactions involving these species and presumably important at their early stages are discussed. Then, we have interpreted the results of this study in light of the results obtained by the Cassini–Huygens mission on these species and their isotopes. Given that H, C, N, and O were preferentially depleted from inner disk materials that formed our planet, the observed similitude of their isotopic fractionation, and subsequent close evolution of Earth's and Titan's atmospheres points towards a cometary origin of Earth atmosphere. Consequently, our scenario also supports the key role of late veneers (comets and water-rich carbonaceous asteroids) enriching the volatile content of the Earth at the time of the late heavy bombardment of terrestrial planets.  相似文献

The two orders of magnitude drop between the measured atmospheric abundances of non-radiogenic argon, krypton and xenon in Earth versus Mars is striking. Here, in order to account for this difference, we explore the hypothesis that clathrate deposits incorporated into the current martian cryosphere have sequestered significant amounts of these noble gases assuming they were initially present in the paleoatmosphere in quantities similar to those measured on Earth (in mass of noble gas per unit mass of the planet). To do so, we use a statistical-thermodynamic model that predicts the clathrate composition formed from a carbon dioxide-dominated paleoatmosphere whose surface pressure ranges up to 3 bars. The influence of the presence of atmospheric sulfur dioxide on clathrate composition is investigated and we find that it does not alter the trapping efficiencies of other minor species. Assuming nominal structural parameters for the clathrate cages, we find that a carbon dioxide equivalent pressure of 0.03 and 0.9 bar is sufficient to trap masses of xenon and krypton, respectively, equivalent to those found on Earth in the clathrate deposits of the cryosphere. In this case, the amount of trapped argon is not sufficient to explain the measured Earth/Mars argon abundance ratio in the considered pressure range. In contrast, with a 2% contraction of the clathrate cages, masses of xenon, krypton and argon at least equivalent to those found on Earth can be incorporated into clathrates if one assumes the trapping of carbon dioxide at equivalent atmospheric pressures of ~2.3 bar. The proposed clathrate trapping mechanism could have then played an important role in the shaping of the current martian atmosphere.  相似文献

Abstract— We report the results of a study of a halite-siderite-anhydrite-chlorapatite assemblage in the Shergotty-Nakhla-Chassigny (SNC) Martian meteorite Nakhla. These minerals are found associated with each other in interstitial areas, with halite often being adjacent to or enclosing siderite. We suggest the halite and other minerals are Martian in origin because (1) the conditions of fall preclude significant amounts of terrestrial contamination or weathering having taken place; (2) textures indicate that the minerals within this assemblage crystallized at the same stage as some silicate and oxide minerals within the Nakhla parent; and (3) the association with siderite, which previous studies have shown has C and O-isotopic compositions incompatible with an origin on the Earth. Siderite has the range of compositions: CaCO3, 0.1–5.7; MgCO3, 2.0–40.9; FeCO3, 23.2–87.0; MnCO3, 1.0–39.9 mol%. There are two compositional groupings: high-MnCO3 (≥30 mol%) and low-MnCO3/high-FeCO3, with a gap identified between the two. This may be a miscibility gap or, alternatively, the two compositional groupings may mark separate generations of carbonate. We have not found any textural evidence for the latter explanation, but acceptance of the presence of a miscibility gap would require independent work on Fe-Mn carbonates to verify its existence. Trace element abundances have been determined by ion microprobe analysis on three siderite and one anhydrite grains. Siderite has light rare earth elements (2.2–7.3 × C1) greater than heavy rare earth elements (0.32–0.79 × C1) without Ce or Eu anomalies, and the anhydrite has a similar pattern. These abundances reflect the source composition rather than partitioning or complexing controls. They are not typical of hydrothermal signatures which generally do not have such smooth REE abundance patterns. The nature of the mineral assemblage suggests that its source rocks on Mars were evaporites. These may be common in the craters and flood plains of the Martian southern highlands. Two models are suggested in this paper to explain the incorporation of evaporitic material into the Nakhla igneous parent. It may have happened as a low-temperature process (<200 °C) by crystallisation from an aqueous fluid. An origin at low temperature is compatible with the available experimental data on siderite stability. Alternatively, we suggest evaporitic material may have been incorporated into the Nakhla parent while melt was still present and crystallized ~800 °C. The latter model can more readily explain the trace element abundances and also the siderite textures that imply intergrowth with residual interstitial melt. Both high- and low-temperature models are consistent with the presence of evaporite sediments on Mars.  相似文献

We have measured the brightness temperatures of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune in the range 35 to 1000 μm. The effective temperatures derived from the measurements, supplemented by shorter wavelength Voyager data for Jupiter and Saturn, are 126.8 ± 4.5, 93.4 ± 3.3, 58.3 ± 2.0, and 60.3 ± 2.0°K, respectively. We discuss the implications of the measurements for bolometric output and for atmospheric structure and composition. The temperature spectrum of Jupiter shows a strong peak at ~350 μm followed by a deep valley at ~450 to 500 μm. Spectra derived from model atmospheres qualitatively reproduce these features but do not fit the data closely.  相似文献

The composition and abundance of volatile gases observed in the jets emanating from fissures near the south pole of Saturn's moon Enceladus are strongly indicative of outgassing from clathrate hydrates which formed as a result of hydrothermal activity rather than nebula condensation. I suggest that fluids must be able to permeate the ice shell, extensively metasomatising the mantle by emplacement of clathrates along fractures and grain boundaries, which subsequently are entrained in rising cryomagmas as xenoliths. These are carried upwards to the point where they dissociate, releasing their gas load into the magma and promoting the vigorous ice fountaining observed—a direct analogue of terrestrial basaltic fire fountains caused by volatile exsolution. This clathrate xenolith model can explain the measured volatile abundances, eruption velocities, the ice to vapour ratio in the plumes, and the vent temperatures.  相似文献

At redshifts   z abs≲ 2  , quasar absorption-line constraints on space–time variations in the fine-structure constant, α, rely on the comparison of Mg  ii and Fe  ii transition wavelengths. One potentially important uncertainty is the relative abundance of Mg isotopes in the absorbers, which, if different from solar, can cause spurious shifts in the measured wavelengths and, therefore, α. Here we explore chemical evolution models with enhanced populations of intermediate-mass (IM) stars, which, in their asymptotic giant branch phase, are thought to be the dominant factories for heavy Mg isotopes at the low metallicities typical of quasar absorption systems. By design, these models partially explain recent Keck/HIRES evidence for a smaller α in   z abs < 2  absorption clouds than on Earth. However, such models also overproduce N, violating observed abundance trends in high- z abs damped Lyman-α (DLA) systems. Our results do not support the recent claim of Ashenfelter et al. that similar models of IM-enhanced initial mass functions (IMFs) may simultaneously explain the HIRES varying-α data and DLA N abundances. We explore the effect of the IM-enhanced model on Si, Al and P abundances, finding it to be much less pronounced than for N. We also show that the 13C/12C ratio, as measured in absorption systems, could constitute a future diagnostic of non-standard models of the high-redshift IMF.  相似文献

We present a FUSE abundance analysis of EC14026 stars. We compare the abundances of heavy elements in the atmospheres of EC14026 stars to non-pulsating stars with similar atmospheric parameters, and investigate whether weak stellar winds could explain the coexistence of variable and non-variable sdB stars in the log g – Teff diagram. We also present preliminary results on time-dependent diffusion calculations of iron in presence of radiative levitation and mass loss, and show how weak stellar winds can affect the diffusive equilibrium between gravitational settling and radiative support.  相似文献
