Abstract

Wave‐induced ice motions measured during the Labrador Ice Margin Experiment (LIMEX ‘89) were interpreted to determine the cause and the frequency of collisions between floes. The LIMEX acceleration data were acquired with an optimal resolution near the predominant wave frequency and did not contain information above 0.5 Hz. It was therefore possible to establish the frequency of collisions, but not the magnitude of the events. Events were defined by any contact between floes in a wave cycle, and the distribution of times between events indicates that floes are more likely to collide in adjacent wave cycles than if the events were independent. Periods of continuous and intermittent collisions were related to the wave characteristics, and the frequency of events increased with a decrease in air temperature and an increase in local wind speed. Contrary to expectations, there was not a positive relation between collision frequency and wave amplitude.  相似文献

Abstract

During the Labrador Ice Margin Experiment (LIMEX) of March‐April 1989, the International Ice Patrol (IIP) of the United States Coast Guard deployed two satellite‐tracked TIROS Arctic Drifter (TAD) platforms on two medium‐sized tabular icebergs. The icebergs were drifting in sea ice of about 9/10 concentration east of Newfoundland. These deployments were part of an experiment to examine differential sea‐ice/iceberg motion during spring conditions near the ice margin. Sea‐ice concentration and movement data were collected concurrently by other LIMEX investigators.

The TADs, deployed on 11 March 1989, were tracked using the ARGOS data collection and location system carried on two NOAA polar‐orbiting satellites of the TIROS family. For two months following the deployment, IIP periodically attempted to relocate the icebergs during routine aerial iceberg patrols. One of the TADs stopped transmitting on 23 April 1989 probably because of a major calving event that resulted in the TAD being crushed. As of 24 April the drift rate of the other TAD nearly doubled compared with its drift rate prior to that date, indicating that it had fallen off the iceberg and was floating on water. By 24 April there was no sea ice near either of the two icebergs.

The TAD data provide a unique datasetfor modelling the deterioration of icebergs while they emerge out of the marginal ice zone and travel in open water. It is shown that a good knowledge of the environmental conditions, pariicularly water temperature and sea state, are critical to model successfully the deterioration and calving of the two icebergs.  相似文献

Abstract

Analysis of CTD, Batfish and drifter data collected in the southern Labrador marginal ice zone during LIMEX (Labrador Ice Margin Experiment) in 1987 shows strong evidence of upwelling at the ice edge. The most clear indication of the upwelling is the rise of isopycnals and the increase of surface density near the ice edge. The upwelling zone has a width of 6 km extending from the ice edge, and an upwelling depth of at least 100 m. The existence of the upwelling zone along the ice edge is shown to be related to the character of the ice edge. Upwelling is more likely to occur at sharp and compacted ice edges. A two‐dimensional coupled ice‐ocean dynamical model of a continuously stratified ocean with a coastal boundary on a sloping bottom is used to study the dynamics of ice‐edge upwelling. The model results are in qualitative agreement with observations. A sensitivity analysis of the model is presented.  相似文献

Abstract

Two sets of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images were collected, as part of the Labrador Ice Margin Experiment (LIMEX), over the Newfoundland Shelf on consecutive days in April 1990. Ice movement is detected from the displacement of ice floes between the two images sets and compared with ice drift data from six satellite‐tracked beacons and in situ CTD data. The ice velocity data derived from the SAR images and the beacons are used to generate a map of ice velocity vectors. A streamfunction map of ocean currents is produced by removing the direct wind‐driven component in the ice movement data, and by using an objective analysis method. The resulting flow pattern contains the offshore branch of the Labrador Current with a speed of 30 to 50 cm s?1. The current closely follows the shelf break topography from north to south through the study area (47–50.5°N) as a continuous flow. In comparison, if the wind effect was not removed from the ice velocity data, the calculated Labrador Current north of 50°N would stray from the shelf break. The position of the current axis and the current speed derived from the ice movement data are in good agreement with the geostrophic current computed from the CTD data.  相似文献

Abstract

A coupled ice‐ocean dynamical model is applied to the simulation of sea‐ice motion and distribution off Newfoundland during the Labrador Ice Margin Experiment (LIMEX), March 1987. In the model, the ice is coupled to a barotropic ocean through an Ekman layer that deepens with increasing wind speed. A 6‐hourly gridded wind dataset was used as input to drive the ice and the ocean. The results show that ice velocities with ice‐ocean coupling are appreciably higher than those without coupling because of the generation of wind‐driven coastal currents. This suggests that coupled ice‐ocean dynamics should always be considered in short‐term sea‐ice models. The model gives reasonable agreement with the observed ice edge except in the southern boundary where ice‐melt has a strong influence on the ice‐edge position. Ocean currents, sea level and ice velocities computed from the model are in qualitative agreement with limited current‐meter, tide‐gauge, and ice drifter trajectory data.  相似文献

Abstract

Snow‐plus‐ice thickness and surface‐ice roughness data collected by a helicopter‐towed sensor package was used to identify surface‐ice properties in March 1992 AVHRR and SAR images for the land‐fast and mobile pack ice off the northern coast of Newfoundland. The sensor package consisted of an electromagnetic induction sensor and laser profilometer. Observed snow depths and ice thicknesses verified that snow‐plus‐ice thickness over undeformed ice can be obtained to an accuracy of ±10 cm. Snow‐plus‐ice thickness and surface roughness data for flight sections covering several hundred kilometres indicated the change in pack ice properties seen in images from thin, smooth coastal ice and open water conditions to thick, rough consolidated offshore pack ice. Ice charts covering the same area showed similar variations in ice conditions based on AVHRR and fixed‐wing reconnaissance data. In the ERS‐1 SAR image, low backscattering coefficients were associated with large, smooth coastal floes interspersed with areas of high backscatter indicating the presence of waves in open water areas. Backscattering coefficients were higher in the rubble areas near the inshore edge of the pack ice than in the interior of the pack ice itself. Distinguishing ice types on the basis of tone alone in SAR imagery was found to be problematic; however in combination with other remotely sensed data such as AVHRR data, SAR data will become more useful in distinguishing ice types.  相似文献

Abstract

Measurements of ocean directional wave spectra, significant wave height, and wind speed over the Grand Banks of Newfoundland were made using the combined capabilities of the radar ocean wave spectrometer (ROWS) and scanning radar altimeter (SRA). The instruments were flown aboard the NASA P‐3A aircraft in support of the Grand Banks ERS‐1 Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) Wave Experiment. The NASA sensors use proven techniques, which differ greatly from SAR, for estimating the directional long‐wave spectrum; thus they provide a unique set of measurements for use in evaluating SAR performance. ROWS and SRA data are combined with spectra from the SAR aboard the Canadian Centre for Remote Sensing (CCRS) CV‐580 aircraft, the first‐generation Canadian Spectral Ocean Wave Model (CSOWM) hindcast, and other available in situ measurements to assess the ERS‐1 SAR's ability to correctly resolve wave field components along a 200‐ to 300‐km flight line for four separate satellite passes. Given the complex seas present on the Grand Banks, the complementary nature of viewing the sea spectrum from the perspectives of multiple sensors and a wave prediction model is apparent. The data intercomparisons show the ERS‐1 SAR to be meeting the expected goals for measuring swell, but the data also show evidence of this remote sensor's inability to detect the shorter waves travelling in the azimuth or along‐track direction. Example SAR spectra simulations are made using a non‐linear forward transform with ROWS measurements as input. Additionally, surface wind and wave height estimates made using the ROWS altimeter channel are presented. These data demonstrate the utility of operating the system in its new combined altimeter and spectrometer configuration.  相似文献

Abstract

The European Space Agency ERS‐1 C‐band V‐V polarization synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and the Russian Almaz S‐band H‐H polarization SAR are compared for their wavenumber response to ocean wave fields existing on 23 November 1991 at the Grand Banks site of the North American ERS‐1 SAR Wave Spectra Validation Experiment. Two‐dimensional wave spectra from two Wavec heave, pitch and roll buoys and a Canadian CV‐580 aircraft C‐band V‐V polarization SAR are used to condition a linear modulation transfer model of wave imaging with SAR. A model of hydrodynamic modulation is included with the velocity bunching and tilt imaging mechanisms to better understand wind and wave interactions. Krogstad's quasi‐linear formulation of Hasselmann's ocean‐SAR integral transform is applied to model SAR velocity bunching and azimuth smearing. Narrow and broad bandwidth components of azimuth wavenumber response for the aircraft SAR are associated with, respectively, non‐linear and incoherent velocity smearing during Doppler resolution of the radar scene. The stationary resolutions of the SAR systems are compared for homogeneous scenes of wind‐roughened, but fetch‐limited, sea surfaces. This comparison is conducted in the Chesapeake Bay of Maryland using ERS‐1 and Almaz satellite imagery collected on 9 May 1992 and 14 May 1991, respectively. The results confirm that SAR imaging of ocean waves can be improved by flying platforms with low R/V (range/velocity) ratios to alleviate the azimuth velocity smear, and near‐nadir incidence angles to increase the effect of tilt modulation.  相似文献

Abstract

The “sea clutter” observable on a standard marine navigation radar has long been recognized as a potential source of information about sea state. In the last decade a number of researchers have published “directional wave spectra” calculated from marine radar images. Our group has continued this line of research using a unique radar system that digitizes and stores radar images eight bits deep directly related to the strength of the radar backscatter.

Our system was deployed on the CSS Hudson during the Grand Banks ERS‐1 SAR Wave Spectrum Validation Experiment cruise in November 1991. We collected in excess of 3000 sea surface backscatter images. From this dataset we have produced a number of directional spectra in an effort to understand the performance of the sensor and to compare it with other wave determining instruments and models.

Analysis has shown a strong azimuthal asymmetry both in the strength of the backscattered signal and in the relative strength of spectral peaks. This asymmetry is similar inform to that observed in scatterometer data. Unbiased estimation of the “true” image spectrum requires removal of these asymmetries. This estimation has been accomplished through calculation and removal of a non‐linear multi‐parameter least‐squares model of the backscatter from each image, and averaging of spectra from many look directions. The resulting spectra compare favourably with those calculated from directional wave buoy data, satellite and aircraft SARs and other directional wave measurements and models.  相似文献

Abstract

Airborne measurements in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) above the marginal ice zone (MIZ) on the Newfoundland Shelf reveal strong lateral variations in mean wind, temperature and the vertical fluxes of heat and momentum under conditions of cold, off‐ice wind. Flux measurements in (and near) the surface layer indicate that the neutral 10‐m drag coefficient depends on ice concentration, ranging from 2 × 10‐3 at 10% coverage to 5 × 10‐3 at 90%. Furthermore, cross‐ice‐edge transects consistently show increasing wind speed, temperature and heat flux in the off‐ice direction, but the momentum flux may either increase or decrease, depending on the relative importance of surface buoyancy flux and roughness. For the conditions encountered in this experiment, it appears surface wave maturity does not have a significant influence on the drag coefficient in fetch‐limited regimes near the ice edge.  相似文献

Abstract

Remote measurements of wave spectra were made using MacLaren Plansearch's Marine Radar Wave Measuring System (Macrada©) for the duration of the ERS‐1 Grand Banks Experiment (10–27 November 1991). The system consists of a Furuno X‐band marine navigation radar and a personal computer. The system was installed and operated onboard the BIO Research vessel CSS Hudson during the experiment. The radar system provides fully directional wave spectra in real time (within minutes of image acquisition) as well as archiving of the raw images for future analysis. During each of the satellite overpasses, excellent data were collected, covering a variety of wave conditions.

This paper describes the data analysis procedures and presents the results of the experiment. In addition, a sensitivity analysis is carried out to study: (1) sensitivity to the number of radar images processed on the resultant spectra, (2) effect of missing one or more images in a dataset, and (3) sensitivity to azimuth angle variation. Finally, the results are compared with corresponding directional wave spectra from other sensors (such as WAVEC Buoy and ERS‐1 SAR).  相似文献

Abstract

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data has become an important tool for studies of polar regions, due to high spatial resolution even during the polar night and under cloudy skies. We have studied the temporal variation of sea and land ice backscatter of twenty‐four SAR images from the European Remote Sensing satellite (ERS‐1) covering an area in Lady Ann Strait and Jones Sound, Nunavut, from January to March 1992. The presence of fast ice in Jones Sound and glaciers and ice caps on the surrounding islands provides an ideal setting for temporal backscatter studies of ice surfaces. Sample regions for eight different ice types were selected and the temporal backscatter variation was studied. The observed backscatter values for each ice type characterize the radar signatures of the ice surfaces. This time series of twenty‐four SAR images over a 3‐month period provides new insights into the degree of temporal variability of each surface. Ice caps exhibit the highest backscatter value of ‐3.9 dB with high temporal variability. Valley glacier ice backscatter values decrease with decreasing altitude, and are temporally the most stable, with standard deviations of 0.08–0.10 dB over the 90‐day period.

First‐year ice and lead ice show a negative trend in backscatter values in time and a positive correlation of up to 0.59 with air temperature over the 90‐day period. For first‐year ice and lead ice, episodes of large temperature fluctuations (±12°C) are associated with rapid changes in backscatter values (±2 dB). We attribute the backscatter increase to a temperature‐induced increase in brine volume at the base of the snow pack. Multi‐year ice, conglomerate ice and shore ice are relatively stable over the 3‐month period, with a backscatter variation of only a few dBs. An observed lag time of up to three days between backscatter increase/decrease and air temperature can be attributed to the insulation effect of the snow cover over sea ice. The net range of the backscatter values observed on the most temporally stable surface, valley glacier ice, of about 0.30 dB indicates that the ERS‐1 SAR instrument exceeds the 1 dB calibration accuracy specified for the Alaska SAR Facility processor for the three winter months.  相似文献

Abstract

The sensitivity of the annual cycle of ice cover in Baffin Bay to short‐wave radiation is investigated. The Princeton Ocean Model (POM) is used and is coupled with a multi‐category, dynamic‐thermodynamic sea‐ice model in which the surface energy balance governs the growth rates of ice of varying thickness. During spring and summer the short‐wave radiation flux dominates other surface heat fluxes and thus has the greatest effect on the ice melt. The sensitivity of model results to short‐wave radiation is tested using several, commonly used, shortwave parameterizations under climatological, as well as short‐term, atmospheric forcing. The focus of this paper is short‐term and annual variability. It is shown that simulated ice cover is sensitive to the short‐wave radiation formulation during the melting phase. For the Baffin Bay simulation, the differences in the resulting ice area and volume, integrated from May to November, can be as large as 45% and 70%, respectively. The parameterization of the effect of cloud cover on the short‐wave radiation can result in the sea‐ice area and volume changes reaching 20% and 30%, respectively. The variation of the cloud amount represents cloud data error, and has a relatively small effect (less then ±4%) on the simulated ice conditions. This is due to the fact that the effect of cloud cover on the short‐wave radiation flux is largely compensated for by its effect on the net near‐surface long‐wave radiation flux.  相似文献

Abstract

The frequency and directional wave‐modelling capability of the Ocean Data Gathering Program (ODGP) deep water spectral wave model is assessed through comparison with WAVEC data gathered at Hibernia. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses indicate better agreement with observations during storms and with the wind‐driven component of the wave spectra. There is statistically poor modelling of the swell. A coherence analysis on derived wave vectors indicates that the ODGP model does not simulate geophysical variability with time‐scales less than about 30 h for overall spectral energy and less than 24 h for wave energy of frequency greater than 0.6 rad s?1 (0.095 Hz). The signals associated with swell waves are incoherent at nearly all time‐scales.  相似文献

Abstract

A sea‐ice dataset derived from passive microwave data acquired by the Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) is compared with a conventional sea‐ice dataset from Ice Branch, Atmospheric Environment Service, Canada. The conventional set uses data from several sources including ships of opportunity, reconnaissance aircraft, satellite photographs and climate stations. The comparison was made for a 3‐year period from 1979 to 1981 over Hudson Bay, an area that is covered with first‐year ice only. For 8 of the 12 months of the year, monthly area‐average ice concentrations are within one tenth; larger differences are evident during periods of melting and freeze‐up. Extensive ponding on first‐year ice during the melt season is interpreted as open water by the SMMR algorithm, leading to significant “errors” in the passive microwave dataset. By comparing the two datasets, we were able to show the extent of ponding on the ice for a complete seasonal melt cycle. During freeze‐up the algorithm, under some conditions, provides a better estimate of the amount of ice than a conventional dataset owing to the difficulty of observing the presence of new ice.  相似文献

Abstract

A lagged cross‐correlation analysis of climatic data from the period 1953–1984 was carried out for three regions of Northern Canada (Beaufort Sea, Hudson Bay, Baffin Bay/Labrador Sea) to determine the relationships between sea‐ice anomalies and surface air temperature and river discharge anomalies. Significant negative correlations at the 95% level were found between sea‐ice and temperature anomalies. A significant correlation at the 95% level was found between sea‐ice and river discharge anomalies in only one of two subregions studied.  相似文献

Abstract

Image texture interpretation is an important aspect of the computer‐assisted discrimination of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sea‐ice imagery. Co‐occurrence probabilities are the most common approach used to solve this problem. However, other texture feature extraction methods exist that have not been fully studied for their ability to interpret SAR sea‐ice imagery. Gabor filters and Markov random fields (MRF) are two such methods considered here. Classification and significance level testing shows that co‐occurrence probabilities classify the data with the highest accuracy, with Gaborfilters a close second. MRF results significantly lag Gabor and co‐occurrence results. However, the MRF features are uncorrelated with respect to co‐occurrence and Gabor features. The fused co‐occurrence/MRF feature set achieves higher performance. In addition, it is demonstrated that uniform quantization is a preferred quantization method compared to histogram equalization.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper describes the observational framework for the research reported within this Special Issue. The validation of the ERS‐1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) for ocean wave measurement was the primary goal and focus; secondary goals were the validation of wave models and marine radars and the investigation of the wind stress/sea‐state relation in the open ocean.

The planned focus of the observations on the ERS‐1 crossover node location and pass times over the Grand Banks of Newfoundland, and on the grid points of the Atmospheric Environment Service's operational wave prediction model, has produced the opportunity for an accurate calibration and a relevant validation of the ERS‐1 SAR, the wave model and the marine radars.

The observations, made on the Grand Banks in winter, strongly emphasize the complexity of the atmospheric and wave fields encountered in the open sea at these latitudes. Their interpretation will provide a challenge, and will require consideration of a wide variety of data sources, both remotely sensed and in situ, all assimilated in the framework of physical ocean models.  相似文献

Abstract

The exceptional sea‐ice retreat and advance that occurred in the Bellingshausen Sea, Antarctica during August 1993 was the largest such winter event in this sector of the Antarctic during the satellite era. The reasons for this fluctuation of ice are investigated using passive microwave satellite imagery, ice motion vectors derived from the satellite data, in‐situ meteorological reports and near‐surface winds and temperatures from the European Centre for Medium‐range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) numerical weather prediction model. The ice edge retreat of more than 400 km took place near 80°W from approximately 1–15 August, although the southward migration of the ice edge was not continuous and short periods of advance were also recorded. Between 16 August and 2 September there was almost continuous sea‐ice recovery. The rate of change of the ice edge location during both the retreat and advance phases significantly exceeded the southward and northward velocity components of ice within the pack, pointing to the importance of ice production and melting during this event. During the month, markedly different air masses affected the area, resulting in temperature changes from +2°C to ‐21°C at the nearby Rothera station. ‘Bulk’ movement of the pack, and compaction and divergence of the sea ice, made a secondary, but still significant, contribution to the observed advance and retreat. The ice extent fluctuations were so extreme because strong meridional atmospheric flow was experienced in a sector of the Southern Ocean where relatively low ice concentrations were occurring. The very rapid ice retreat/advance was associated with pronounced low‐high surface pressure anomaly couplets on either side of the Antarctic Peninsula.  相似文献
