Impulsive increases in the low energy proton flux observed by the Explorer 34 satellite, in very close time association with geomagnetic storm sudden commencements are described. It is shown that these events are of short duration (20–30 min) and occur only during the decay phase of a solar cosmic-ray flare event. The differential energy spectrum and the angular distribution of the direction of arrival of the particles are discussed. Two similar increases observed far away from the earth by the Pioneer 7 and 8 deep-space probes are also presented. These impulsive increases are compared with Energetic Storm Particle events and their similarities and differences are discussed. A model is suggested to explain these increases, based on the sweeping and trapping of low energy cosmic rays of solar origin by the advancing shock front responsible for the sudden commencement detected on the Earth.Part of this work was performed while the author was at the University of Texas at Dallas as a Visiting Professor.  相似文献

Comparison of Explorer 34 observations on solar protons in the energy range 0.7–55 MeV with similar observations from other spacecrafts show that the large field aligned anisotropies which are observed during the rise time of a flare event change to an equilibrium anisotropy coming radially from the sunward direction due to the convective removal of the solar particles. At very late times during the decay (T 4 days) the anisotropy is observed to be from a direction 45° E of the satellite-Sun line which is interpreted as indicative of positive density gradient of solar cosmic ray population. The dependence of both types of equilibrium anisotropies on the energy and the velocity of the particles and on plasma velocity are shown to be in agreement with the theoretical predictions. The amplitude of the large field aligned anisotropies observed earlier in the event is found to be independent of the rise time of the event and to vary as (Vt)–1.Interplanetary magnetic sector crossings during a flare event, cause abrupt changes in both the amplitude and phase of the non-equilibrium anisotropy whereas they have no significant effect on equilibrium anisotropy. The effect of azimuthal density gradients on the decay time constants of flare enhancements are also examined in an attempt to understand the complicated structures, often observed, in the time intensity profiles at low energies.Part of this work was done while the author was at the University of Texas as Dallas, U.S.A.Now at the National Academy of Sciences, Washington, D.C.  相似文献

Data obtained by the Explorer 34 satellite regarding the degree of anisotropy of ≳ 70 keV electrons of solar origin are reported. It is shown that the anisotropies are initially field aligned, and that they decay to ≲ 10% in a time of the order of 1 hr. The decays of the concurrent ionic and electronic anisotropies for one well observed event are in good agreement with the diffusive propagation model of Fisk and Axford. The data suggest parallel diffusion coefficients for both ions and electrons that are rigidity independent. From considerations of a long lived electron event, it is shown that the electronic fluxes exhibit ‘equilibrium’ anositropies at late times. These are interpreted as indicating that convective removal at the solar wind velocity is the dominant mechanism whereby solar cosmic ray electrons (∼- 70 keV) leave the solar system. They also indicate that there is a positive density gradient at late times in a solar electron event. The data suggest that this was established prior to the establishment of a similar gradient for the cosmic ray ions. A solar energetic particle event was observed on 9 July 1996, by the ERNE sensors LED and HED on board the SOHO spacecraft. The arrival of the first protons in the energy range >20 MeV took place at 09:55 UT, 43 min after the maximum in the X-ray and Hα radiation of a flare located at S10 W30. The rise phase of the particle intensities at all energies was exceptionally rapid. At 12:50 UT, the intensities dropped in all energy channels. Simultaneously, the magnetic field instrument MFI on board WIND, not far from SOHO, detected a sharp and large change in the magnetic field direction. The analysis of the directional measurements of ERNE in the energy range 14–17 MeV shows the presence of a strong flux anisotropy during the whole period 10:10–12:50 UT. From 12:50 UT until about 16:00 UT, the directional analysis of the proton fluxes gives only a weak anisotropy at the limit of the sensor resolution. Later on, the flux anisotropy was found to recur, indicating a continuous injection of particles into the flux tubes connected to the SOHO spacecraft. These experimental results lead to strict limits on particle injection and transport models. The first period of the anisotropy and its recurrent phase cover 24 hours. This suggests an extended injection of particles. The strength and stability of the anisotropy indicate that, during these periods, SOHO was in an interplanetary sector where the particle transport was almost scatter-free. On the other hand, during the intermediate 3-hr period, we observed particles which traveled in a sector of diffusive transport or which were retarded by magnetic field disturbances not far from the observation site.  相似文献

Physical conditions in the near-surface layer of the Moon are overviewed. This medium is formed in the course of the permanent micrometeoroid bombardment of the lunar regolith and due to the exposure of the regolith to solar radiation and high-energy charged particles of solar and galactic origin. During a considerable part of a lunar day (more than 20%), the Moon is passing through the Earth’s magnetosphere, where the conditions strongly differ from those in the interplanetary space. The external effects on the lunar regolith form the plasma-dusty medium above the lunar surface, the so-called lunar exosphere, whose characteristic altitude may reach several tens of kilometers. Observations of the near-surface dusty exosphere were carried out with the TV cameras onboard the landers Surveyor 5, 6, and 7 (1967–1968) and with the astrophotometer of Lunokhod-2 (1973). Their results showed that the near-surface layer glows above the sunlit surface of the Moon. This was interpreted as the scattering of solar light by dust particles. Direct detection of particles on the lunar surface was made by the Lunar Ejects and Meteorite (LEAM) instrument deployed by the Apollo 17 astronauts. Recently, the investigations of dust particles were performed by the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) instrument at an altitude of several tens of kilometers. These observations urged forward the development of theoretical models for the lunar exosphere formation, and these models are being continuously improved. However, to date, many issues related to the dynamics of dust and the near-surface electric fields remain unresolved. Further investigations of the lunar exosphere are planned to be performed onboard the Russian landers Luna-Glob and Luna-Resurs.  相似文献

Observations of hydrogen and helium ions in the solar wind have been carried out by the Goddard Space Flight Center - University of Maryland plasma instrument on Explorer 34. These ions are completely separated by means of electrostatic and magnetic fields. The average value of the ratio of number densities is 0.051 ± .02, derived from over 3000 h of measurement. Variations about this value from about 0.01 up to greater than 0.15 occur, and there are more high values than can be explained by random variation. A tentative association with some geomagnetic storms is suggested. The above value of abundance, assuming that plasma emitted in the ecliptic plane is a fair sample of the output of the sun, combined with other recent work by other methods indicate that the solar abundance may be about half the previously quoted estimates of approximately 0.1.  相似文献

The Ramaty High-Energy Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) spacecraft is a NASA Small Explorer (SMEX) class mission. RHESSI is designed to image solar X-rays and gamma rays with high-energy resolution. The Instrument Data Processing Unit (IDPU) serves as the central RHESSI instrument on-board data-processing element. It controls and monitors the instrument operations, and provides a flexible telemetry collection and formatting system. The system responds autonomously to optimize science data collection over a wide dynamic range of conditions, handling up to 40 Mbps of telemetry during solar flares. This paper presents an overview of the IDPU hardware and software design.  相似文献

The Energetic and Relativistic Nuclei and Electron (ERNE) experiment will investigate the solar atmosphere and the heliosphere by detecting particles produced in various kinds of energy release processes. ERNE is at the upper end in energy among the SOHO particle instruments. The instrument will measure the energy spectra of elements in the range Z=1–30. The energy coverage varies dependent on the particle species from a few MeV/n up to a few hundred MeV/n and electrons from 2 to 50 MeV. At high energies, ERNE records also the direction of the incident particles for accurate measurements of the pitch angle distribution of the ambient flux within the viewing cone. Especially the isotope identification capability has been one of the instrument design goals, thus providing new data regarding various fundamental questions in solar physics.  相似文献

The integral flux of low energy protons (> 10 MeV) observed by the University of New Hampshire cosmic ray detector aboard the Pioneer 9 spaceprobe has been compared with similar measurements of the near-Earth spacecraft Explorer 34 during the decay phase of the February 25–March 2, 1969 series of solar cosmic ray events. At this time the Pioneer 9 spaceprobe was 0.8 AU from the Sun and close to the Sun-Earth radial line. The ratio of integral fluxes as measured by the separated spacecraft can be calculated theoretically during the convective phase of the decay of these events and will depend on whether energy loss processes are operative. A comparison of the observed and theoretically calculated ratios suggests that the adiabatic energy loss process is operative.  相似文献

The Transition Region and Coronal Explorer (TRACE) satellite, launched 2 April 1998, is a NASA Small Explorer (SMEX) that images the solar photosphere, transition region and corona with unprecedented spatial resolution and temporal continuity. To provide continuous coverage of solar phenomena, TRACE is located in a sun-synchronous polar orbit. The ∼700 Mbytes of data which are collected daily are made available for unrestricted use within a few days of observation. The instrument features a 30-cm Cassegrain telescope with a field of view of 8.5×.5 arc min and a spatial resolution of 1 arc sec (0.5 arc sec pixels). TRACE contains multilayer optics and a lumogen-coated CCD detector to record three EUV wavelengths and several UV wavelengths. It observes plasmas at selected temperatures from 6000 K to 10 MK with a typical temporal resolution of less than 1 min.  相似文献

We present statistics of SGR 1806-20 bursts, combining 290 events detected with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer/Proportional Counter Array, 111 events detected with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment, and 134 events detected with the International Cometary Explorer. We find that the fluence distribution of bursts observed with each instrument are well described by power laws with indices 1.43, 1.76, and 1.67, respectively. The distribution of time intervals between successive bursts from SGR 1806-20 is described by a lognormal function with a peak at 103 s. There is no correlation between the burst intensity and either the waiting times until the next burst or the time elapsed since the previous burst. In all these statistical properties, SGR 1806-20 bursts resemble a self-organized critical system, similar to earthquakes and solar flares. Our results thus support the hypothesis that the energy source for soft gamma repeater bursts is crustquakes due to the evolving, strong magnetic field of the neutron star, rather than any accretion or nuclear power.  相似文献

We present the first results from the ion mass analyzer IMA of the ASPERA-3 instrument on-board of Mars Express. More than 200 orbits for May 2004-September 2004 time interval have been selected for the statistical study of the distribution of the atmospheric origin ions in the planetary wake. This study shows that the martian magnetotail consists of two different ion regimes. Planetary origin ions of the first regime form the layer adjacent to the magnetic pile-up boundary. These ions are accelerated to energy greater than 2000 eV and exhibit a gradual decreasing of energy down to the planetary tail. The second plasma regime is observed in the planetary shadow. The heavy ions (considered as planetary ones) are accelerated to the energy of the solar wind protons. Obviously the acceleration mechanism is different for the different plasma regimes. Study of two plasma regimes in the frame referred to the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) direction (we used MGS magnetometer data to obtain the IMF clock angle) clearly shows their spatial anisotropy. The monoenergetic plasma in the planetary shadow is observed only in the narrow angular sector around the positive direction of the interplanetary electric field.  相似文献

The solar extreme ultraviolet (e.u.v.) flux and solar ultraviolet (u.v.) flux in the Schumann-Runge continuum region have been measured by spectrometers on board the Atmosphere Explorer satellites from about 1974 to 1981. The solar flux spectra measured on 23 April 1974 (a day the Atmosphere Explorer satellite reference spectrum was obtained), 13–28 July 1976 (a period of spotless conditions near solar cycle minimum), and 19 February 1979 (a day near solar cycle maximum) are used to examine the global mean temperature structure of the thermosphere above 120 km. The results show that for solar cycle minimum the calculated global mean exospheric temperature is in agreement with empirical model predictions, indicating that the energy absorbed by the thermosphere is balanced by downward molecular thermal conduction. For solar cycle maximum the energy absorbed by the thermosphere is not balanced by downward thermal conduction but agreement between the calculated and observed temperature is obtained with the inclusion of 5.3μm radiational cooling by nitric oxide. Model calculations of the minor neutral constituents in the thermosphere show that about three times more nitric oxide is produced during solar cycle maximum than solar cycle minimum conditions. The results suggest that nitric oxide cooling is small during solar cycle minimum, because of low nitric oxide densities and low thermospheric temperatures, but it becomes significantly larger during solar cycle maximum, when nitric oxide densities and thermospheric temperatures are larger.23 April 1974 was a moderately disturbed day and the results of the global mean temperature calculation indicate that it is necessary to consider a high latitude heat source associated with the geomagnetic activity to obtain agreement between the calculated and observed global mean temperature structure.  相似文献

CELIAS - Charge, Element and Isotope Analysis System for SOHO   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The CELIAS experiment on SOHO is designed to measure the mass, ionic charge and energy of the low and high speed solar wind, of suprathermal ions, and of low energy flare particles. Through analysis of the elemental and isotopic abundances, the ionic charge state, and the velocity distributions of ions originating in the solar atmosphere, the investigation focuses on the plasma processes on various temporal and spatial scales in the solar chromosphere, transition zone, and corona. CELIAS includes 3 mass- and charge-discriminating sensors based on the time-of-flight technique: CTOF for the elemental, charge and velocity distribution of the solar wind, MTOF for the elemental and isotopic composition of the solar wind, and STOF for the mass, charge and energy distribution of suprathermal ions. The instrument will provide detailed in situ diagnostics of the solar wind and of accelerated particles, which will complement the optical and spectroscopic investigations of the solar atmosphere on SOHO. CELIAS also contains a Solar Extreme Ultraviolet Monitor, SEM, which continously measures the EUV flux in a wide band of 17 – 70 nm, and a narrow band around the 30.4 nm He II line.Principal-InvestigatorPrincipal-Investigator for data phase  相似文献

Particle measurements from the low altitude polar-orbiting satellite GRS-A/Azur and from Explorer 41 in the magnetosheath during a time period after the sudden commencement at 14:30 UT on 8 March 1970, have been used in order to study the access mode of solar particles into the closed field line region of the magnetosphere. A particle decrease in the magnetosheath and over the central polar cap but not in the stable trapping region indicates that solar particles are temporarily trapped and can complete several drifts around the Earth. A single loss cone distribution ~2° inside of the stable trapping region cannot be explained by strong pitch angle scattering but is probably due to non-adiabatic particle motion.  相似文献

A method is described whereby a particle distribution measured by a number of telescopes (four in this application), observing the whole sky, mounted upon a spinning spacecraft, can be resolved into a set of spherical harmonics. The coefficients of the expansion are used to estimate the anisotropy of the particles and components of the anisotropy in different frames of reference (e.g., solar wind frame, RTN frame, spacecraft frame, etc.) for specific energy channels. For the transformation of the distribution function between frames of reference moving each other, the respective Compton–Getting correction is performed by a new geometrical approach. The respective energy change is also evaluated.  相似文献

It has previously been suggested that the energy for the optical emission of solar flares was provided by ionization losses of accelerated particles in the flares. We show that nuclear interaction of these particles would also produce fluxes of secondary neutrons and gamma rays detectable at the earth. A comparison of the expected intensities of these secondaries with the present upper limit intensities during solar flares shows that such an origin from the optical emission energy is consistent with the measured limits.Fulbright Research Scholar on leave from Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics, University of California, Los Angeles, Calif., U.S.A.  相似文献

1 INTRODUCTIONThe maing-length theory (MLT) is the most commonly used approach to calculate convective energy transport in stars and other astrophysical situations. Based on the original idea ofPrandtl (1952) that turbulent parcels trallsfer heat in a similar way as molecules of gas do inthermal conduction, the MLT assumes that convection cells, drived by buoyancy, move thlougha ~ng length 1 and release the heat they carry when they merge with their environment. The NATALYA-2M high-energy radiation spectrometer is an element of the complex of scientific equipment of the CORONAS-PHOTON satellite. The instrument intended for registering gamma radiation of solar flares in the broad energy range of 0.2–1600 MeV as well as neutrons of solar origin with energies of 20–300 MeV represents itself as a scintillation spectrometer based on CsI(Tl) crystals with a total area of 32 × 38 cm2 and the thickness of 18 cm. The spectra and time profiles of the gamma quanta count rates are measured in four subranges: R (0.2–2 MeV), L (1–18 MeV), M (7–250 MeV), and H (50–1600 MeV). Depending on the gamma radiation energy, the effective area of the instrument varies within the range from 750 to 900 cm2, and the energy resolution at the Cs-137 line (662 keV) is 10%, it being about 30% at energies higher than 50 MeV. A system of stabilization based on the signal from the generator of reference light pulses is used to provide stability and automated adjustment of the parameters of spectrometric modules. The measuring channels of the instrument are calibrated during the flight using a source of “tagged” gamma quanta on the Co-60 radioactive isotope. Polystyrene scintillation counters are used to provide protection from the background of charged particles. The “CORONAS-PHOTON” spacecraft (SC) was launched from the Plesetsk spaceport on January 30, 2009, to a low circular near-Earth orbit (the altitude is 550 km, the inclination is 82.5°). On February 27, the first scientific data were obtained from the NATALYA-2M instrument. The results of the flight calibration of the instrument detectors in different energy channels demonstrated good agreement with the ground measurements. The paper describes the instrument and observational potentials of the NATALYA-2M spectrometer, gives the results of the adjustment and calibration, and exemplifies the registration of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs)on the orbit.  相似文献

The SMall Explorer for Solar Eruptions (SMESE) is a small satellite being developed jointly by China and France. It is planed to launch around the next solar maximum year (∼ 2011) for observing simultaneously the two most violent types of eruptive events on the sun (the coronal mass ejection (CME) and the solar flare) and investigating their relationship. As one of the 3 main payloads of the small satellite, the high energy burst spectrometer (HEBS) adopts the upto- date high-resolution LaBr3 scintillation detector to observe the high-energy solar radiation in the range 10 keV—600 MeV. Its energy resolution is better than 3.0% at 662 keV, 2-fold higher than that of current scintillation detectors, promising a breakthrough in the studies of energy release in solar flares and CMEs, particle acceleration and the relationship between solar flares and CMEs.  相似文献
