Within the framework of the linear theory of long waves taking into account the action of the Coriolis force, we solve the problem of generation of internal waves by a barotropic tide impinging on a bottom irregularity of the sea-ridge type. The cross section of the ridge is assumed to be rectangular and the stratification of the ocean is regarded as stepwise with two thermoclines (three-layer model). We study the dependences of the characteristics of generated waves on the parameters of stratification and the period of the impinging barotropic tide. Translated by Peter V. Malyshev and Dmitry V. On the basis of a nonlinear model taking into account viscosity, density diffusion, and currents, we perform the numerical analysis of propagation of perturbations formed in the abyssal part of the Black Sea as a result of the action of tangential wind stresses or density flows in the form of a strip on the sea surface. It is shown that, in the course of time, in the region of the bottom slope, these perturbations generate a train of waves in the sea, which causes oscillations of the fields of density and currents. There are some differences between the generation of internal waves by the flows of density and the wind. Unlike the wind action, in the presence of flows of density in the upper layer in the region of the strip, the initial period of generation is characterized by the formation of intense perturbations without train structure. The generation of plane internal waves in a continuously stratified ocean by a steadily moving anomaly of the atmospheric pressure is studied in a linear statement using a quasi-static approximation. 本文采用无海底地形但考虑海洋跃层和剪切背景流的二维非静力准不可压缩方程组的数值模式,开展失稳垂向剪切背景流下线性和非线性对称型海洋内波生成演变的数值实验,并对结果进行分析、比较和讨论。研究结果表明,线性内波强度随积分时间始终呈指数增长,并有内波的对称不稳定;而非线性内波强度则在发展期呈准线性增长,最终进入稳定期。线性增长比非线性增长要快得多,非线性效应具有维稳作用。对该线性和非线性对称型内波,在跃层附近位密度扰动均有大值中心,即其为跃层所俘获,这与实际观测相一致;流函数与位密度扰动两者均有很好配合,位密度扰动的正、负中心分别相应于流函数的上升、下沉运动,表明有从海底向上的斜对流发生,且以跃层为顶盖。对线性内波来说,随积分时间增加,其波形大体不变,其正、负振幅也大体相同,并有符号相反原地增长的两个倾斜环流圈,而在它们之间则有较强倾斜上升流。非线性内波波形随积分时间改变,倾斜环流圈数目也在增加,最终形成负环流强于正环流的结果,并导致流函数、位密度扰动水平梯度剧增,其可视为间断。  相似文献

In a general linear statement, the kinematic structure of spatial internal waves generated by a uniformly moving area of oscillating surface pressures in a continuously stratified ocean of constant depth is studied. The earth's rotation effects are considered. Possible types of ocean wave fields with a constant Brunt-Väisälä frequency are examined. The plane problem on the generation of linear internal waves by a moving area of time-harmonic surface pressures in a continuously-stratified ocean of constant depth is considered. An analytical relation has been derived for forced internal waves off the site of their generation in the form of an internal wave field superposition corresponding to individual vertical modes. The possible wave regimes are determined. The mechanisms for the generation of mean density and current velocity fields in a medium with a vertical shear, conditioned by the non-linearity of packets of internal waves are analysed. Modulation instability of internal waves is studied allowing for the earth's rotation. A non-linear Schrödinger's equation for the evolution of the envelope has been derived. Also corrections to the mean density and current velocity in the approximation, quadratic by the wave's amplitude, non-oscillating on the wave's time scale have been obtained. The Resonant Triad Model (RTM) developed in (Ibragimov, 2007), is used to study the Thorpe’s problem (Thorpe, 1997) on the existence of self-resonant internal waves, i.e., the waves for which a resonant interaction occurs at second order between the incident and reflected internal waves off slopes. The RTM represents the extension of the McComas and Bretherton’s three wave hydrostatic model (McComas and Bretherton, 1977) which ignores the effects of the earth’s rotation to the case of the non-hydrostatic analytical model involving arbitrarily large number of rotating internal waves with frequencies spanning the range of possible frequencies, i.e., between the maximum of the buoyancy frequency (vertical motion) and a minimum of the inertial frequency (horizontal motion). The present analysis is based on classification of resonant interactions into the sum, middle and difference interaction classes. It is shown in this paper that there exists a certain value of latitude, which is classified as the singular latitude, at which the coalescence of the middle and difference interaction classes occurs. Such coalescence, which apparently had passed unnoticed before, can be used to study the Thorpe’s problem on the existence of self-resonant waves. In particular, it is shown that the value of the bottom slope at which the second-order frequency and wavenumber components of the incident and reflected waves satisfy the internal wave dispersion relation can be approximated by two latitude-dependent parameters in the limiting case when latitude approaches its singular value. Since the existence of a such singular latitude is generic for resonant triad interactions, a question on application of the RTM to the modeling of enhanced mixing in the vicinity of ridges in the ocean arises.  相似文献

We study the influence of baroclinic tidal waves on the diffusion of an impurity spot in a continuously stratified fluid. The conditions under which the interaction between internal waves and the rough bottom topography may be the reason for synchronous fluctuations of pressure at the bottom have been studied. Disturbances of the depth are assumed to be small compared with the mean depth of the ocean, and the Väisälä-Brunt frequency is constant. It is shown that synchronous fluctuations of pressure exist with a frequency equal to that of internal waves. The amplitude of pulsations can be approximately an order lower than the amplitude of fluctuations generated by standing surface waves. A numerical model which consists of the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, the action balance equation and the radar backscat- tering model is developed to simulate the frequency dependence of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) remote sensing of nonlinear o- cean internal waves. Muhifrequency data collected by NASA SIR - C SAR and NASA JPL AIRSAR are used as comparison. Case studies show that the results of simulation agree well with the results of SAR data.  相似文献

We perform the numerical analysis of the long-wave response of the free surface of a fluid in a basin of variable depth to the formation of an anomaly of the baric field for a finite period of time. In numerical experiments, we use the distribution of depths typical of the south coast of the Crimea. We also study the dependence of the dynamics of the sea level in the zone of the baric anomaly and in the shelf zone on the space and time scales of local changes in the field of atmospheric pressure in the open part of the basin. This study aims to explore generation mechanisms of the ocean internal wave using the dynamical analysis methods based on linear theories. Historical cruise measurements and recent synthetic aperture radar (SAR) observations of mesoscale eddies with diameter of several tens of kilometers to hundreds of kilometers show that the internal wave packets with wavelength of hundreds of meters to kilometer exist inside the mesoscale eddies. This coexistence phenomenon and inherent links between the two different scale processes are revealed in the solutions of governing equations and boundary conditions for the internal wave disturbance with a horizontally slowly variable amplitude in a cylindrical coordinate system. The theoretical solutions indicate that the instability of eddy current field provides the dynamical mechanism to internal wave generation. The derived dispersion relation indicates that the internal wave propagation is modified by the eddy current field structure. The energy equation of the internal waves clearly shows the internal wave energy increment comes from the eddy. The theoretical models are used to explain the observation of the mesoscale eddy-induced internal waves off the Norwegian coast. The two-dimensional waveform solution of the anticyclonic eddy-induced internal wave packet appears as ring-shaped curves, which contains the typical features of eddy stream lines. The comparison of theoretical solutions to the structure of the internal wave packets on SAR image shows a good agreement on the major features.  相似文献

Within the framework of the linear theory of long waves, we study internal waves generated by a barotropic tide in a two-layer ocean of variable depth taking into account the influence of the Coriolis force. Barotropic waves run over an extended unevenness of the bottom at an arbitrary angle. This unevenness is regarded as a model of the continental slope and shelf. Diffraction of a plane progressive wave on a localized rise of arbitrary height of the sea-bed is studied within the framework of general linear theory of eddy-free waves. The solution is selected using finite-difference method. It is shown that the wave velocity field over the bank displays a character of localized disturbances attenuating as distance. Increase in depth intensifies centres of disturbances over the mountain peak. A fully nonlinear, non-hydrostatic model, MITgcm, is used to investigate internal solitary waves (ISWs) from the Luzon Strait (LS). As the ISWs in the South China Sea (SCS) have drawn more and more attention in recent years, they are studied in various ways, i.e., via remote sensing images, in situ measurements, and numerical simulations. The inspiration of this paper derived from the potential flaws of different numerical models that were employed to examine ISWs. In this study, we performed three-dimensional (3D) experiments with realistic topography and stratification, as well as with fully non-hydrostatic terms in the model, which was rather important for investigating the ISWs.Modeling results showed that baroclinic tides in the LS were essentially three-dimensional (3D), and that wave structures around two ridges in the strait were complicated with interesting internal oceanic phenomena. Several zonal cross-sections were chosen to illustrate vertical structures of zonal velocity field, and to show their meridional variances together with surface horizontal velocity gradients in order to highlight the advantages of 3D modeling with fully nonlinear, non-hydrostatic terms. Following Vlasenko et al. (2005), analysis of two parameters (Froude number and slope parameter that is defined as the ratio of inclination of topography to slope of radiated rays) that govern generation regime indicated that internal waves produced in the LS were subject to a mixed lee wave regime rather than baroclinic tide regime or unsteady lee wave regime.The propagation of ISWs beyond the generation area showed that manifestation of 3D effects was not very obvious, which, through further analysis, was mainly attributed to homogeneity of topography, inaccuracy of barotropic forcing, and Kuroshio intrusion in the LS. To better understand the necessity of 3D modeling, we chose several zonal cross-sections and performed various sensitivity experiments to show discrepancies between 2D and 3D cases.  相似文献
