On the basis of the historical profile observations and the recent Kuroshio observations,the yearly formation,development and decay of the high density water found between 50 to 100 m isobath over the middle and southern East China Sea continental shelf are anyalysed. The formation of this high density water occurs between November and March of the following year. A possible reason for it is that as the mixed water between the coastal water and the outer sea water transports northward by the Taiwan Warm Current, its density increases by surface cooling. It also mixes with the neighbouring lower density water masses. The transportation and decay of the high density water through April to July are also descussed. They can be ascribed to the seasonal surface layer warming and the fast development of Taiwan Warm Current. The high density water disappears in August. 相似文献

We report on the extraordinary findings of several endemic species of North Pacific deepwater fish and squid on the continental slope of the Falkland Islands in the Southwest Atlantic, namely the giant rattail grenadier Albatrossia pectoralis (Macrouridae), pelagic eelpout Lycodapus endemoscotus (Zoarcidae) and squid Gonatopsis octopedatus (Gonatidae). These deepwater dwellers might have moved more than 15,000 km from their common species ranges with Pacific Deep Water along the western slopes of both Americas and through the Drake Passage. Our findings provide further evidence of the possible role of deepwater currents in the dispersal of bathypelagic and benthopelagic animals from one polar region to another across various climatic zones of the world ocean. 相似文献

Production parameters of surface phytoplankton were measured along three transects: La Manche-Cape Town (I); Cape Town-54°S (II); 0°-49°W (along 54°S) (III). The Canary upwelling waters were most productive along transect I, where the surface chlorophyll a (Chl 0) and the surface primary production (PP 0) were as high as 4.3 mg/m3 and 173 mg C/m3 per day, respectively. Mosaic patterns in the distribution of these parameters were recorded in the northeastern regions of the South Subtropical Anticyclonic Gyre (Chl 0 = 0.03–0.35 mg/m3; PP 0 = 1.6–12.6 mg C/m3 per day). Along transect II, the average twofold southward increase in Chl 0 (from 0.2 to 0.4 mg/m3) and the concurrent decline of the phytoplankton assimilation activity ( AN 0) resulted in deviations from typical latitudinal changes inPP 0. At most sites, PP 0 values varied between 6 and 15 mg C/m3 per day. Negligible changes in Chl 0 (0.36–0.85 mg/m3), PP 0 (8–19 mg C/m3 per day), and AN 0 (0.7–1.6 mg C/mg chl a per hour) were registered for the oceanic waters along transect III. Along all the transects, PP 0 depended on Chl 0 to a greater extent than AN 0. The values of the latter parameter were largely determined by the water temperature and showed a slight correlation with the insolation. Along transect II, the integrated primary production (PP int) and the layer-integrated chlorophyll a in the upper 200 m (Chl 0–200) generally varied from 180 to 360 mg C/m2 per day and from 30 to 70 mg/m2, respectively. In the Polar Front region, an increase in Chl 0–200, PP int, Chl 0, and PP 0 up to respective values of 190 mg/m2, 520 mg C/m2 per day, 1.2 mg/m3, and 32 mg C/m3 per day was observed. A comparison of the water column (0–100 m) stability with the vertical distribution of the primary production and chlorophyll content along transect II implies that the thick (>100 m) upper mixed layer (UML) formed in response to the strong water cooling and wind forcing was largely responsible for the limited primary production in the Subantarctic and Antarctic regions. The large UML thickness resulted in an intense removal of plant cells from the photosynthetic layer and light starvation of a significant (up to 60%) part of the phytoplankton community. 相似文献

Grain-size records of the terrigenous and calcareous silt fraction, preservation of planktic foraminifera, and benthic foraminiferal stable-isotope data (δ13C, δ18O values of C. wuellerstorfi) at ODP Site 927 on the Ceará Rise (5°27.7′N, 44°28.8′W), are used to reconstruct variations in the history of bottom current strength, ventilation, and carbonate corrosiveness of deep waters during the time interval from 0.8 to 0.3 Ma. Glacial periods are characterized by generally smaller mean sizes of the terrigenous sortable silt fraction (mean(SS)), lower δ13C values, and poorer preservation of planktic foraminifera compared to interglacials. This indicates lower bottom current speeds, larger nutrient contents and more corrosive deep water. By contrast, larger mean(SS) sizes, higher δ13C values, and well preserved planktic foraminifera indicate strong circulation and a well ventilated deep-water mass during interglacials. The observed changes are most likely related to the weakening and strengthening of circulation of Lower North Atlantic Deep Water (LNADW). Cross-spectral analysis between the mean(SS) and benthic δ18O records reveals that minima in mean(SS) occur about 7.6 k.y. after the maximum in ice volume. This indicates a considerable lag time between ice-shield induced changes in LNADW production and subsequent changes in the velocity of LNADW flow in the western equatorial Atlantic. Striking changes in bottom current speed occur regularly during glacial to interglacial transitions. Extremely fine mean(SS) minima point to an almost complete shutdown of bottom current vigor in response to a cessation of LNADW production caused by an enhanced melt water release during the initial phases of deglaciation. However, each of the fine minima extremes is followed by a rapid shift to very high mean(SS) values that indicate strong bottom currents, and hence, vigorous LNADW flow during the early interglacials. After the onset of glacial Stage 12, generally poorer carbonate preservation and higher variability is registered. This coincides with a global decrease in carbonate preservation during the mid-Brunhes (mid-Brunhes dissolution event). Detailed grain-size analysis of the calcareous fine fraction (<63 μm) revealed a considerable reduction of particles in the fraction from 7 to 63 μm during periods of enhanced dissolution. This indicates a preferential dissolution of larger planktic foraminiferal fragments which leads to an enrichment of coccoliths in the calcareous fine fraction. 相似文献

On the basis of the hydrographic data observed within the Canary Basin in autumn 1985, temperature-salinity properties, distributions of water masses and barocltne flow field, as well as the volume transports in this area are described more detailly. The analyses indicate that the activity in the waters of the Canary Basin is mainly attributed to the interleaving and mixing between the originated water masses (e. g. Surface Water, North Atlantic Central Water, Mediterranean Water and Deep Water) and the modified water masses (Subpolar Mode Water, Labrador Sea Water and Antarctic Intermediate Water) from the outside of the study area and the variation of themselves. The east recirculation of the Subtropic Gyre in the North Atlantic consists of Azores Current and Canary Current.Azores Current is formed with several flow branches around the Azores Island, while the main flow lies at 35?N south of the Azores Island. In December–January of 2010 the spatial distribution of the phytoplankton production characteristics was studied along transects
in the vicinity of the Greenwich meridian (I) and in the Drake Passage (II). On transect I, the surface chlorophyll a concentration and primary production varied from 0.11 up to 3.57 mg/m3 and from 4.38 up to 37.47 mgC/m3 per day, respectively. The chlorophyll a in the photosynthetic layer and the integrated primary production varied from 10.7 up to 66.1 mg/m2 and from 83 to 646 mgC/m2 per day, respectively. On transect II in the surface layer, the chlorophyll a concentration changed within the range of 0.09–1.02 mg/m3 and the primary production ranged from 2.08 to 9.49 mgC/m3. The integrated values ranged from 6.32 to 38.29 mg/m2 and from 41 to 221 mgC/m2 per day, respectively. The moderate means of themaximum quantum yield (F
v/F
m) on transects I and II (0.41 and 0.35, respectively) testify to the low activity of the phytoplankton’s photosynthetic apparatus.
The studied water areas in the Southern Ocean differed both in the phytoplankton biomass expressed in the chlorophyll a concentration values and in the conditions of the primary production formation. 相似文献

We discuss nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) distributions in 49 vertical profiles covering the upper ∼300 m of the water column along two ∼13,500 km transects between ∼50°N and ∼52°S during the Atlantic Meridional Transect (AMT) programme (AMT cruises 12 and 13). Vertical N2O profiles were amenable to analysis on the basis of common features coincident with Longhurst provinces. In contrast, CH4 showed no such pattern. The most striking feature of the latitudinal depth distributions was a well-defined “plume” of exceptionally high N2O concentrations coincident with very low levels of CH4, located between ∼23.5°N and ∼23.5°S; this feature reflects the upwelling of deep waters containing N2O derived from nitrification, as identified by an analysis of N2O, apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) and NO3−, and presumably depleted in CH4 by bacterial oxidation. Sea-to-air emissions fluxes for a region equivalent to ∼42% of the Atlantic Ocean surface area were in the range 0.40–0.68 Tg N2O yr−1 and 0.81–1.43 Tg CH4 yr−1. Based on contemporary estimates of the global ocean source strengths of atmospheric N2O and CH4, the Atlantic Ocean could account for ∼6–15% and 4–13%, respectively, of these source totals. Given that the Atlantic Ocean accounts for around 20% of the global ocean surface, on unit area basis it appears that the Atlantic may be a slightly weaker source of atmospheric N2O than other ocean regions but it could make a somewhat larger contribution to marine-derived atmospheric CH4 than previously thought. 相似文献

An analysis of historical oxygen data provides evidence on the water exchange between theSouth China Sea (SCS) and the Pacific Ocean (PO). In the vicinity of the Luzon Strait (LS) , the dissolved oxygen concentration of sea water is found to be lower on the Pacific side than on the SCS side at depths between 700 and 1500 m (intermediate layer) , while the situation is reversed above 700 m (upper layer) and below 1 500 m (deep layer). The evidence suggests that water exits the SCS in the intermediate layer but enters it from the Pacific in both the upper and the deep layers, supporting the earlier speculation that the Luzon Strait transport has a sandwiched structure in the vertical. Within the SCS basin, the oxygen distribution indicates widespread vertical movement, including the upwelling in the intermediate layer and the downwelling in the deep layer. 相似文献

Hydrographic, geochemical, and direct velocity measurements along two zonal (7.5°N and 4.5°S) and two meridional (35°W and 4°W) lines occupied in January–March, 1993 in the Atlantic are combined in an inverse model to estimate the circulation. At 4.5°S, the Warm Water (potential temperature θ>4.5°C) originating from the South Atlantic enters the equatorial Atlantic, principally at the western boundary, in the thermocline-intensified North Brazil Undercurrent (33±2.7×106 m3 s−1 northward) and in the surface-intensified South Equatorial Current (8×106 m3 s−1 northward) located to the east of the North Brazil Undercurrent. The Ekman transport at 4.5°S is southward (10.7±1.5×106 m3 s−1). At 7.5°N, the Western Boundary Current (WBC) (17.9±2×106 m3 s−1) is weaker than at 4.5°S, and the northward flow of Warm Water in the WBC is complemented by the basin-wide Ekman flow (12.3±1.0×106 m3 s−1), the net contribution of the geostrophic interior flow of Warm Water being southward. The equatorial Ekman divergence drives a conversion of Thermocline Water (24.58⩽σ0<26.75) into Surface Water (σ0<24.58) of 7.5±0.5×106 m3 s−1, mostly occurring west of 35°W. The Deep Water of northern origin flows southward at 7.5°N in an energetic (48±3×106 m3 s−1) Deep Western Boundary Current (DWBC), whose transport is in part compensated by a northward recirculation (21±4.5×106 m3 s−1) in the Guiana Basin. At 4.5°S, the DWBC is much less energetic (27±7×106 m3 s−1 southward) than at 7.5°N. It is in part balanced by a deep northward recirculation east of which alternate circulation patterns suggest the existence of an anticyclonic gyre in the central Brazil Basin and a cyclonic gyre further east. The deep equatorial Atlantic is characterized by a convergence of Lower Deep Water (45.90⩽σ4<45.83), which creates an upward diapycnal transport of 11.0×106 m3 s−1 across σ4=45.83. The amplitude of this diapycnal transport is quite sensitive to the a priori hypotheses made in the inverse model. The amplitude of the meridional overturning cell is estimated to be 22×106 m3 s−1 at 7.5°N and 24×106 m3 s−1 at 4.5°S. Northward heat transports are in the range 1.26–1.50 PW at 7.5°N and 0.97–1.29 PW at 4.5°S with best estimates of 1.35 and 1.09 PW. 相似文献

The distributions of humic-like fluorescent dissolved organic matter (at excitation/emission wavelengths of 340 nm/440 nm, F(340/440)) and apparent oxygen utilization (AOU) are determined from water samples taken at 27 stations along 7.5°N, in the equatorial Atlantic Ocean. The relationship between F(340/440) and AOU is evaluated. The influence of water mass mixing is removed through multiple regressions of both F(340/440) and AOU with salinity and temperature for the ocean interior. A general and significant relationship between the residuals of F(340/440) and AOU is found for the entire water column deeper than 200 m (R2=0.79, n=360, p-value <0.001), endorsing the idea that changes in fluorescence intensity are directly related to in situ oxidation of organic matter by microbial activity in the dark equatorial Atlantic Ocean. In addition, we analyse and discuss the relationships between the residuals of F(340/440) and AOU for all individual water masses. 相似文献

The main processes of interaction between the coastal water, shelf water and Kuroshiowater in the Huanghai Sea (HS) and East China Sea (ECS) are analyzed based on the observation and study results in recent years. Rocks dredged and drilled from both the rift mountains of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (Minia seamount) and from the northern wall and the median ridge of the adjacent Gibbs fracture zone near 53°N include tholeiites, serpentinized and mylonitized peridoties, and gabbroic rock.The tholeiites include: (1) pyroxene-tholeiites, commonly without phenocrysts and containing less than 15% Al2O3; (2) plagioclase-tholeiites with small (1.1–2.2 mm length) plagioclase phenocrysts and an Al2O3 content varying between 14–17%; and (3) high-alumina plagioclase tholeiites with large (> 2.5 mm length) plagioclase phenocrysts and more than 17% Al2O3. The apparently transitional differences among the three groups support the possibility that differentiation by crystal fractionation of the high-alumina plagioclase-tholeiites gave rise to the plagioclase-tholeiites with less Al2O3 and smaller phenocrysts and to the pyroxene-tholeiites. A small portion of the basalts ampled show effects of low-grade metamorphism. The peridotites may represent evidence of intrusive emplacement of peridotitic material beneath the tholeiitic rocks. 相似文献

Measurements of gas-, particle- and precipitation-phases of atmospheric mercury (Hg) were made in the South and equatorial Atlantic Ocean as part of the 1996 IOC Trace Metal Baseline Study (Montevideo, Uruguay to Barbados). Total gaseous mercury (TGM) ranged from 1.17 to 1.99 ng m−3, with a weighted mean of 1.61±0.09 ng m−3. These values compare well with Pacific Ocean data and earlier results from the Atlantic. The open-ocean samples recorded a distinctive inter-hemispheric gradient, which is consistent with a long-lived trace gas emitted to a greater extent from the Northern than from the Southern Hemisphere. Correlations with surface 222Rn measurements indicate an influence of regional terrestrial sources on open-ocean TGM concentrations. Total Hg in precipitation ranged from 10 to 99 pM (volume-weighted average: 17.8±2.9 pM). On average, about 72% of the total Hg was “reactive” (i.e., reducible by SnCl2). The data showed an apparent rapid nonlinear decrease in concentration with event size (“washout curve”). The wet depositional flux was estimated at 18–36 nmol m−2 yr−1 (4–7 μg m−2 yr−1), which is slightly lower than that found in mid-continental locations of North America (6–12 μg m−2 yr−1). 210Pb analyses indicate a strong impact of particles on rain Hg concentrations. Particle-phase Hg (range 5–25 fmol m−3; mean 12±1 fmol m−3; 66% “reactive”) was comparable to values over the equatorial Pacific. The dry depositional flux is ca. 0.4 nmol m−2 yr−1, or 0.4–1.0% of the wet flux. Particle-phase Hg concentrations did not change significantly when African dust was present during sampling. However, the Hg/Al ratios were consistent with crustal values during the dust periods. The residence time of TGM was calculated to be 1.3–3.4 yr in this region, based on standing stock estimates. Incubation of rainwater added to surface seawater gave reduction rates [i.e., production of elemental Hg (Hg°); 1.6–4.3% d of total Hg added] comparable to additions of inorganic ionic standards, indicating that Hg+2 from precipitation is reduced in a similar manner in surface waters. Thus, precipitation-phase Hg is generally available for evasion to the atmosphere following deposition to the surface ocean, effectively enhancing the mobility and residence time of Hg at the Earth's surface. 相似文献

The relations between the processes occurring in the equatorial latitudes of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans were studied on the basis of the Granger causality analysis and a simulation of phase dynamics using the indices of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the equatorial Atlantic mode (EAM). Data on the monthly means of the sea-surface temperature over the period 1870–2006 for the Niño 3 (5° S-5° N, 150° W-90° W) and Niño 3.4 (5° S-5° N, 170° W-120° W) regions in the Pacific and the Atlantic 3 region (20° W-0, 3° S-3° N) in the Atlantic Ocean were used as the ENSO and EAM indices. The statistically significant influence of the EAM on the ENSO is noted. The lag time of this influence is estimated at two months. No significant reverse effect is revealed. An increase in the EAM’s influence on the ENSO was observed in the second half of the 20th century. 相似文献
