We present an automated technique for comparison of magnetic field inversion-line maps from SOHO/MDI magnetograms with solar filament data from the Solar Feature Catalogue created as part of the European Grid of Solar Observations project. The Euclidean distance transform and connected component labelling are used to identify nearest inversion lines to filament skeletons. Several filament inversion-line characteristics are defined and used to automate the decision whether a particular filament/inversion-line pair is suitable for quantitative comparison of orientation and separation. The technique is tested on 551 filaments from 14 Hα images at various dates, and the distributions of angles and distances between filament skeletons and line-of-sight (LOS) magnetic inversion lines are presented for six levels of magnetic field smoothing. The results showed the robustness of the developed technique which can be applied for a statistical analysis of magnetic field in the vicinity of filaments. The method accuracy is limited by the static filament detection which does not distinguish between filaments, fibrils, pre-condensations and filament barbs and this may increase the asymmetries in magnetic distributions and broadening in angular distributions that requires the incorporation of a feature tracking technique.  相似文献

A new algorithm is presented that automatically detects filaments on the Sun in full-disc Hα images. Pre-processing of Hα images includes corrections for limb darkening and foreshortening. Further, by applying suitable intensity and size thresholds, filaments are extracted, while other solar features, e.g. sunspots and plages, are removed. Filament attributes such as their position on the solar disc, total area, length, and number of fragments are determined. In addition, every filament is also labelled with a unique number for identification. The algorithm is capable of following a particular filament through successive images, which allows us to detect their changes and disappearance. We have analysed ten cases of filament eruption from different observatories, and the results obtained are presented. The algorithm will eventually be integrated with an upcoming telescope at the Udaipur Solar Observatory for real-time monitoring of activated/eruptive filaments. This aspect should prove to be of particular importance in studies pertaining to space weather.  相似文献

The 180-degree ambiguity in magnetic field direction along polarity reversal boundaries can be resolved often and reliably by the chiral method. The chiral method requires (1) identification of the chirality of at least one solar feature related to a polarity reversal boundary along which the field direction is sought and (2) knowledge of the polarity of the network magnetic field on at least one side of the polarity reversal boundary. In the context of the Sun, chirality is an observable signature of the handedness of the magnetic field of a solar feature. We concentrate on how to determine magnetic field direction from chirality definitions and illustrate the technique in eight examples. The examples cover the spectrum of polarity boundaries associated with filament channels and filaments ranging from those connected with active regions to those on the quiet Sun. The applicability of the chiral method to all categories of filaments supports the view that active region filaments and quiescent filaments are the extreme ends in a continuous spectrum of filaments. The chiral method is almost universally applicable because many types of solar features that reveal chirality are now readily seen in solar images accessible over the World Wide Web; also there are clear differences between left-handed and right-handed solar structures that can be identified in both high- and low-resolution data although high-resolution images are almost always preferable. In addition to filaments and filament channels, chirality is identifiable in coronal loop systems, flare loop systems, sigmoids, some sunspots, and some erupting prominences. Features other than filament channels and filaments can be used to resolve the 180-degree ambiguity because there is a one-to-one relationship between the chiralities of all features associated with a given polarity reversal boundary. Ring-like filaments have been detected on the spectroheliograms in the H-alpha line. Inside these filaments the magnetic field flux has a predominant polarity. Some of the dark filaments are connected by filament channels which can be seen at the limb either as (a) weak prominences or (b) dense low chromospheric features or (c) multi-channel system of matter flow between two prominences or (d) common quiescent prominences. The filament and the filament channel together form a continuous closed contour and outline the region of thef polarity particularly at the beginning of the solar cycle. The change in sign of the polar field of the Sun is associated with the drift of the filament band to high latitudes.  相似文献

This paper presents the techniques developed for the automated detection of filaments on Meudon H spectroheliograms, and, by extension, on any full-disk H Sun observations. Some cleaning processes are first applied to the images to correct them from defects characteristic of the instrument. Indeed, these defects may lead to spurious detections. From the cleaned images, filament areas are then segmented using a region growing method which efficiently returns the full extent of these dark areas. The filaments are finally described by means of their pruned skeleton. This representation allows one to compare the automatically segmented filaments with those manually recorded for Meudon Synoptic Maps. The very good agreement observed on a representative set of images confirms that this method can effectively be used in the frame of the EGSO (European Grid of Solar Observations) project in order to produce a reliable catalog dedicated to solar features.  相似文献

A new class of analytical solution of the coupled system of Da Rios-diffusion equation in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) representing solitonic vortex filaments is obtained. One of the solutions is similar to the one found by Rogers and Schief describing a solitary wave propagating along a constant torsion vortex filament. Scalar magnetic diffusion equations are obtained by decomposing the magnetic filament along Frenet frame. The integral invariant of curvature is used to place limits on the diffused 100 eV plasma filament curvature. The resistivity of η=5×10?5 ohm?cm—close to the stainless steel limit is used to approximate the Frenet curvature. From the scalar diffusion equations the vortex filaments are constrained to move along torsionless (planar) trajectories. Da Rios equations are coupled to diffusion equation to obtain a solitonic vortex diffused filaments. Due to bounds in time and length L we show that the model discussed is particularly useful in solar physics.  相似文献

The Whole Heliosphere Interval (WHI) was an international observing and modeling effort to characterize the 3-D interconnected ??heliophysical?? system during this solar minimum, centered on Carrington Rotation 2068, March 20??C?April 16, 2008. During the latter half of the WHI period, the Sun presented a sunspot-free, deep solar minimum type face. But during the first half of CR 2068 three solar active regions flanked by two opposite-polarity, low-latitude coronal holes were present. These departures from the quiet Sun led to both eruptive activity and solar wind structure. Most of the eruptive activity, i.e., flares, filament eruptions and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), occurred during this first, active half of the interval. We determined the source locations of the CMEs and the type of associated region, such as active region, or quiet sun or active region prominence. To analyze the evolution of the events in the context of the global solar magnetic field and its evolution during the three rotations centered on CR 2068, we plotted the CME source locations onto synoptic maps of the photospheric magnetic field, of the magnetic and chromospheric structure, of the white light corona, and of helioseismological subsurface flows. Most of the CME sources were associated with the three dominant active regions on CR 2068, particularly AR 10989. Most of the other sources on all three CRs appear to have been associated with either isolated filaments or filaments in the north polar crown filament channel. Although calculations of the flux balance and helicity of the surface magnetic features did not clearly identify a dominance of one region over the others, helioseismological subsurface flows beneath these active regions did reveal a pronounced difference among them. These preliminary results suggest that the ??twistedness?? (i.e., vorticity and helicity) of subsurface flows and its temporal variation might be related to the CME productivity of active regions, similar to the relationship between flares and subsurface flows.  相似文献

A new method for the automated detection of coronal holes and filaments on the solar disk is presented. The starting point is coronal images taken by the Extreme Ultraviolet Telescope on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO/EIT) in the Fe ix/x 171 Å, Fe xii 195 Å, and He ii 304 Å extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lines and the corresponding full-disk magnetograms from the Michelson Doppler Imager (SOHO/MDI) from different phases of the solar cycle. The images are processed to enhance their contrast and to enable the automatic detection of the two candidate features, which are visually indistinguishable in these images. Comparisons are made with existing databases, such as the He i 10830 Å NSO/Kitt Peak coronal-hole maps and the Solar Feature Catalog (SFC) from the European Grid of Solar Observations (EGSO), to discriminate between the two features. By mapping the features onto the corresponding magnetograms, distinct magnetic signatures are then derived. Coronal holes are found to have a skewed distribution of magnetic-field intensities, with values often reaching 100?–?200 gauss, and a relative magnetic-flux imbalance. Filaments, in contrast, have a symmetric distribution of field intensity values around zero, have smaller magnetic-field intensity than coronal holes, and lie along a magnetic-field reversal line. The identification of candidate features from the processed images and the determination of their distinct magnetic signatures are then combined to achieve the automated detection of coronal holes and filaments from EUV images of the solar disk. Application of this technique to all three wavelengths does not yield identical results. Furthermore, the best agreement among all three wavelengths and NSO/Kitt Peak coronal-hole maps occurs during the declining phase of solar activity. The He ii data mostly fail to yield the location of filaments at solar minimum and provide only a subset at the declining phase or peak of the solar cycle. However, the Fe ix/x 171 Å and Fe xii 195 Å data yield a larger number of filaments than the Hα data of the SFC.  相似文献

Based on the developed method of jointly using data on the magnetic fields and brightness of filaments and coronal holes (CHs) at various heights in the solar atmosphere as well as on the velocities in the photosphere, we have obtained the following results:
  • The upward motion of matter is typical of filament channels in the form of bright stripes that often surround the filaments when observed in the HeI 1083 nm line.
  • The filament channels observed simultaneously in Hα and HeI 1083 nm differ in size, emission characteristics, and other parameters. We conclude that by simultaneously investigating the filament channels in two spectral ranges, we can make progress in understanding the physics of their formation and evolution.
  • Most of the filaments observed in the HeI 1083 nm line consist of dark knots with different velocity distributions in them. A possible interpretation of these knots is offered.
  • The height of the small-scale magnetic field distribution near the individual dark knots of filaments in the solar atmosphere varies between 3000 and 20000 km.
  • The zero surface separating the large-scale magnetic field structures in the corona and calculated in the potential approximation changes the inclination to the solar surface with height and is displaced in one or two days.
  • The observed formation of a filament in a CH was accompanied by a significant magnetic field variation in the CH region at heights from 0 to 30000 km up to the change of the predominant field sign over the entire CH area. We assume that this occurs at the stage of CH disappearance.

The Kelperian motion of dust particles in the solar system is mainly influenced by the electromagnetic and plasma Poynting-Robertson drag. The first force is isotropic while the second one shows latitudinal variations due to the observed differences of the solar wind parameters in the ecliptic plane and over the solar poles. Close to the Sun other effects become important, e.g. sublimation and sputtering, as well as for submicron particles Lorentz scattering has to be taken into account. These forces are very weak for dust grains of moderate size (10–100 µ) not too close (>0.03 AU) to the Sun and are neglected here. Assuming that the general form of the latidudinally dependent force is a series expansion in Legendre polynomials, we have studied the averaged equations of motion for the classical elements and found the first integral of them. The general character of motion is the same as for the classical Poynting-Robertson drag: particles spiral towards the Sun. The new features in the orbital evolution under the latitudinally dependent force as compared with the isotropic Poynting-Robertson drag are:
    1. not only the semimajor axisa and the eccentricity ε but also the argument of the perihelion ω varies with time,
    2. the rate of change ofa, ε, ω depends on the inclination.
An example of particle trajectories in the phase space of elements is presented.  相似文献

This paper presents a generic method to automatically segment and characterize solar filaments from various Hα full-disk solar images, obtained by different solar observatories, with different dynamic ranges and statistical properties. First, a cascading Hough circle detector is designed to find the center location and radius of the solar disks. Second, polynomial surface fitting is adopted to correct unbalanced luminance. Third, an adaptive thresholding method is put forward to segment solar filaments. Finally, for each piece of a solar filament, its centroid location, area, and length are characterized, in which morphological thinning and graph theory are used for identifying the main skeletons of filaments. To test the performance of the proposed methods, a dataset composed of 125 Hα images is considered. These images were obtained by four solar observatories from January 2000 to May 2010, one image per month. Experimental results show that the accuracy rate is above 95% as measured by filament number and above 99% as measured by filament area, indicating that only a few tiny filaments are not detected.  相似文献

We define for observational study two subsets of all polar zone filaments, which we call polemost filaments and polar filament bands. The behavior of the mean latitude of both the polemost filaments and the polar filament bands is examined and compared with the evolution of the polar magnetic field over an activity cycle as recently distilled by Howard and LaBonte (1981) from the past 13 years of Mt. Wilson full-disk magnetograms. The magnetic data reveal that the polar magnetic fields are built up and maintained by the episodic arrival of discrete f-polarity regions that originate in active region latitudes and subsequently drift to the poles. After leaving the active-region latitudes, these unipolar f-polarity regions do not spread equatorward even though there is less net flux equatorward; this indicates that the f-polarity regions are carried poleward by a meridional flow, rather than by diffusion. The polar zone filaments are an independent tracer which confirms both the episodic polar field formation and the meridional flow. We find:
    1. The mean latitude of the polemost filaments tracks the boundary of the polar field cap and undergoes an equatorward dip during each arrival of additional polar field.
    2. Polar filament bands track the boundary latitudes of the unipolar regions, drifting poleward with the regions at about 10 m s-1.
    3. The Mt. Wilson magnetic data, combined with a simple model calculation, show that the filament drift expected from diffusion alone would be slower than observed, and in some cases would be equatorward rather than poleward.
    4. The observation that filaments drift poleward along with the magnetic regions shows that fields of both polarities are carried by the meridional flow, as would be expected, rather than only the f-polarity flux which dominates the strength. This leads to the prediction that in the mid-latitudes during intervals between the passage of f-polarity regions, both polarities are present in nearly equal amounts. This prediction is confirmed by the magnetic data.

Since the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) began recording ≈?1 TB of data per day, there has been an increased need to automatically extract features and events for further analysis. Here we compare the overall detection performance, correlations between extracted properties, and usability for feature tracking of four solar feature-detection algorithms: the Solar Monitor Active Region Tracker (SMART) detects active regions in line-of-sight magnetograms; the Automated Solar Activity Prediction code (ASAP) detects sunspots and pores in white-light continuum images; the Sunspot Tracking And Recognition Algorithm (STARA) detects sunspots in white-light continuum images; the Spatial Possibilistic Clustering Algorithm (SPoCA) automatically segments solar EUV images into active regions (AR), coronal holes (CH), and quiet Sun (QS). One month of data from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO)/Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) and SOHO/Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) instruments during 12 May?–?23 June 2003 is analysed. The overall detection performance of each algorithm is benchmarked against National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Solar Influences Data Analysis Center (SIDC) catalogues using various feature properties such as total sunspot area, which shows good agreement, and the number of features detected, which shows poor agreement. Principal Component Analysis indicates a clear distinction between photospheric properties, which are highly correlated to the first component and account for 52.86% of variability in the data set, and coronal properties, which are moderately correlated to both the first and second principal components. Finally, case studies of NOAA 10377 and 10365 are conducted to determine algorithm stability for tracking the evolution of individual features. We find that magnetic flux and total sunspot area are the best indicators of active-region emergence. Additionally, for NOAA 10365, it is shown that the onset of flaring occurs during both periods of magnetic-flux emergence and complexity development.  相似文献

We present initial 3D tomographic reconstructions of the inner heliosphere during the Whole Heliosphere Interval (WHI) – Carrington Rotation 2068 (CR2068) – using Solar-Terrestrial Environment Laboratory (STELab) Interplanetary Scintillation (IPS) observations. Such observations have been used for over a decade to visualise and investigate the structure of the solar wind and to study in detail its various features. These features include co-rotating structures as well as transient structures moving out from the Sun. We present global reconstructions of the structure of the inner heliosphere during this time, and compare density and radial velocity with multi-point in situ spacecraft measurements in the ecliptic; namely STEREO and Wind data, as the interplanetary medium passes over the spacecraft locations.  相似文献

For solar activity Cycles 20 and 21 (1966??C?1985) the solar differential rotation has been investigated using H?? filaments and relatively small-scale long-lived magnetic features with negative and positive polarities. We used annual averaged angular velocities of quiescent H?? filaments from H?? photoheliograms of the Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory film collection and selected long-lived magnetic features from the McIntosh atlas (McIntosh, Willock, and Thompson, Atlas of Stackplots, NGDC, 1991). We have determined coefficients of Faye??s formulas for H?? filaments as well as for long-lived magnetic features and have found that for Solar Cycles 20 and 21 the H?? filaments have lower rotation rates and rotated more differentially than the long-lived magnetic features.  相似文献

Imaging Spectroscopy of a Solar Filament Using a Tunable Hα Filter   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Observations using a narrow band Hα filter still remain one of the best ways to investigate the fine structures and internal dynamics of solar filaments. Hα observations, however, have been usually carried out with the peak response of the filter fixed at a single wavelength, usually at the centerline, in which the investigation is limited to the Hα morphology and its time evolution. In this paper, we demonstrate that the Hα spectroscopy that takes Hα images successively at several wavelengths is a useful tool in the study of solar filaments on the solar disk. Our observation of a filament was carried out on August 3, 2004 at Big Bear Solar Observatory using the 10-inch refractor. The Lyot Hα filter was successively tuned to five wavelengths: ?0.6, ?0.3, 0.0, +0.3, and +0.6 Å from the Hα line center. Each set of wavelength scan took 15 s. After several steps of data reduction, we have constructed a five-wavelength spectral profile of intensity contrast at every spatial point. The contrast profile at each spatial point inside the filament was reasonably well fit by the cloud model as far as the contrast is high enough, and allowed us to construct the maps of τ0, v, Δ λD and S in the filament. We also found that the line center method that is often used, always yields line-of-sight velocities that are systematically lower than the cloud model fit. Our result suggests that taking Hα images at several wavelengths using a tunable filter provides an effective way of deriving physically meaningful parameters of solar filaments. Particularly constructing the time sequence of v maps appears to be a useful tool for the study of internal dynamics, like counterstreaming, in filaments.  相似文献

The STEREO mission has been providing a stereoscopic view of filament eruptions in the EUV. The clearest view during a filament eruption is seen in He ii 304 Å observations. One of the main problems in visualizing filament dynamics in He ii 304 Å is the strong background contrast due to surface features. We present a technique that removes background features and leaves behind only the filamentary structure, as seen by STEREO-A and -B. The technique uses a pair of STEREO He ii 304 Å images observed simultaneously. The STEREO-B image is geometrically transformed to a STEREO-A view so that the background images appear similar. Filaments, being elevated structures, i.e., not lying on the same spherical surface as background features, do not appear similar in the transformed view. Thus, subtracting the two images cancels the background but leaves behind the filament structure. We apply this technique to study the dynamics of the filament-eruption event of 22 May 2008, which was observed by STEREO and followed by several ground-based observatories participating in the Joint Observing Programme (JOP 178).  相似文献

We study the velocity fields in the region of quiet solar filaments using spectral observations at the Sayan Solar Observatory (ISTP, Irkutsk). Once the series of spectral images have been processed, maps of the two-dimensional distribution of the velocity and its variations in the chromosphere (in the Hβ λ = 486.13 nm line) and the photosphere (in the Fe I λ = 486.37 nm line) are constructed. The motions in the filaments have been found to consist of steady and periodic components. Our analysis of the spatial distributions of various oscillation modes shows that the short-period (<10 min) oscillations propagate mainly vertically and are observed at the filament edges, on scales of several arcseconds. The quasi-hour (>40 min) oscillations propagate mostly along the filament at a small angle to its axis. The intensity in the Hβ core in individual fragments of some filaments varies with a period of about one hour. The observed velocity structures in the filaments and the imbalance of steady motions on the opposite sides of the filaments can be explained in terms of the model of a twisted fine-structure magnetic flux tube.  相似文献

A filament is a cool, dense structure suspended in the solar corona. The eruption of a filament is often associated with a coronal mass ejection(CME), which has an adverse effect on space weather. Hence, research on filaments has attracted much attention in the recent past. The tilt angle of active region(AR)magnetic bipoles is a crucial parameter in the context of the solar dynamo, which governs the conversion efficiency of the toroidal magnetic field to poloidal magnetic field. Filaments always form over polarity inversion lines(PILs), so the study of tilt angles for these filaments can provide valuable information about generation of a magnetic field in the Sun. We investigate the tilt angles of filaments and other properties using McIntosh Archive data. We fit a straight line to each filament to estimate its tilt angle. We examine the variation of mean tilt angle with time. The latitude distribution of positive tilt angle filaments and negative tilt angle filaments reveals that there is a dominance of positive tilt angle filaments in the southern hemisphere and negative tilt angle filaments dominate in the northern hemisphere. We study the variation of the mean tilt angle for low and high latitudes separately. Investigations of temporal variation with filament number indicate that total filament number and low latitude filament number vary cyclically, in phase with the solar cycle. There are fewer filaments at high latitudes and they also show a cyclic pattern in temporal variation. We also study the north-south asymmetry of filaments with different latitude criteria.  相似文献

The slowly varying component of the Sun at 169 MHz for the period August 1962 to March 1966 has been studied, using daily data from the East West radioheliograph at Nançay.By relating these radio data to the optical features visible on the solar disc (calcium plages and filaments), this thermal radio-emission can be satisfactorily interpreted as originating in both helmets and active streamers:The radio-sources responsible for this emission are linked to the presence of filaments. Depending on the cases, these filaments are either very far from any calcium plage, or closely associated with them. The cross-sectional area of such sources is often far from having circular symmetry and seems to be closely related to the configuration of the underlying filament itself. In several cases, the altitude of the sources can be estimated, and a typical value of about 270000 km is found. In this respect no significant difference is found between radio-sources related to a filament closely associated with a calcium plage, and those which are related to a filament very far from such plages. At 169 MHz, coronal enhancements provide a relatively small contribution to the slowly varying component. Finally, the observations are used to derive a morphological model for streamers in the medium corona, and several implications of such a model are briefly discussed.  相似文献
