The “strange star - NDAF” model (NDAF: Neutrino Dominated Accretion Flow) is proposed as an alternative central engine of gamma-ray bursts for unifying the interpretation of the prompt emission and postburst activities of gamma-ray bursts. The structure of NDAF around a strange star is calculated. Different from other central compact objects, the strange star will feed back the phase transition energy of strangization on the accretion flow, with neutrinos as energy carriers. The friction between NDAF and strange star is ignored in this paper. The results indicate: firstly, the structure of NDAF around a strange star is sensitive to accretion rate; secondly, if accretion rate is larger than 0.18 M? s-1, the “strange star - NDAF” model can unify the explanation on the prompt emission and postburst activities of gamma-ray bursts, and the range of allowable accretion rates is wider than that in frictionless “neutron star - NDAF” models; thirdly, the range of annihilation energy of “strange star - NDAF” model is very wide, when the accretion rate is higher than 0.3 M? s-1, the annihilation energy is greater than 1051 erg; finally, if the accretion rate is greater than 0.3 M? s-1, the annihilation energy of “strange star - NDAF” model is larger than what of “black hole - NDAF” model at the same accretion rate by more than one order of magnitude, it is favorable to explaining some extremely energetic gamma-ray bursts.  相似文献

Strange stars are compact objects similar to neutron stars composed of strange matter. This paper investigates the observational effects of the strong interaction between quarks. We believe: 1) that the conversion of a neutron star to a strange star is a large “period glitch” which is determined by the strong interaction; 2) that the strong interaction results in effective damping of oscillation of hot strange stars, which could be a new mechanism of driving supernova explosions; 3) that the strong interaction increases the difference in rotation between strange and neutron stars under high temperatures, making the minimum period for strange stars lower than that for neutron stars.  相似文献

The conversion from neutron stars with different equation of states (EOSs) for neutron matter into strange stars with different EOSs for strange quark matter has been studied in a general relativistic numerical calculation in this paper. For hot neutron stars, their conversion may lead to great variations in their rotation periods, of which the magnitude would be greatly dependent upon the EOS for neutron matter, and of which the timescale would be greatly determined by the EOS for strange matter. This phenomenon appears as giant glitches, which might provide a probe of EOSs for both neutron matter and strange matter. But for cold neutron stars, their conversion may result in a population of gamma-ray bursts.  相似文献

GRB 170817A was confirmed to be associated with GW170817, which was produced by a neutron star - neutron star merger. It indicates that at least some short gamma-ray bursts come from binary neutron star mergers. Theoretically, it is widely accepted that short gamma-ray bursts can be produced by two distinctly different mechanisms, binary neutron star mergers and neutron star - black hole mergers. These two kinds of bursts should be different observationally due to their different trigger mechanisms. Motivated by this idea, we collect a universal data set constituted of 51 short gamma-ray bursts observed by Swift/BAT, among which 14 events have extended emission component. We study the observational features of these 51 events statistically. It is found that our samples consist of two distinct groups. They clearly show a bimodal distribution when their peak photon fluxes at 15–150 keV band are plotted against the corresponding fluences. Most interestingly, all the 14 short bursts with extended emission lie in a particular region of this plot. When the fluences are plotted against the burst durations, short bursts with extended emission again tend to concentrate in the long duration segment. These features strongly indicate that short gamma-ray bursts really may come from two distinct types of progenitors. We argue that those short gamma-ray bursts with extended emission come from the coalescence of neutron stars, while the short gamma-ray bursts without extended emission come from neutron star - black hole mergers.  相似文献

Possible phase transitions in neutron star matter, particularly the melting of neutron stars' crystalline cores, are discussed. Such processes may explain the observed luminosity of pulsars. They are used also as a basis for an explanation of the origin of low energy gamma-ray bursts which have been intensively studied for the last few years. The authors discuss the structure of gamma-ray bursts and the possibility of obtaining from observational data some information on thermal evolution of neutron stars and dynamic processes in the pulsar crust.  相似文献

The current Cherenkov telescopes together with GLAST are opening up a new window into the physics at work close to black holes and rapidly rotating neutron stars with great breakthrough potential. Very high energy gamma-ray emission up to 10 TeV is now established in several binaries. The radiative output of gamma-ray binaries is in fact dominated by emission above 1–10 MeV. Most are likely powered by the rotational spindown of a young neutron star that generates a highly relativistic wind. The interaction of this pulsar wind with the companion’s stellar wind is responsible for the high energy gamma-ray emission. There are hints that microquasars, accretion-powered binaries emitting relativistic jets, also emit gamma-ray flares that may be linked to the accretion–ejection process. Studying high energy gamma-ray emission from binaries offers good prospects for the study of pulsar winds physics and may bring new insights into the link between accretion and ejection close to black holes.

Taking into account the peculiar properties of hybrid stars, stars containing both a core of strange quark matter and the solid crust of a neutron star, and employing a fully self-consistent second-order correction technique, we study the time scale of bulk viscosity dissipation at the low temperature limit (T < 109 K) and with this time scale we calculate the critical spin frequency of the hybrid star. It is found that its minimal value is 704.42 Hz (corresponding to a pulse period of 1.42 ms). When this is compared with the periods of neutron and strange stars, a better interpretation of the observational data is obtained.  相似文献

A possibility for gamma-ray bursts to arise due to thermonuclear flashes in the surface layers of accreting neutron stars is discussed. The principal difference of the sources of gamma-ray bursts from bursters is supposed to result from the existence of strong magnetic fields (1012–1013G) on the neutron star surface. It is shown that the thermonuclear energy released may be rapidly and effectively transported to the outer layers by MHD waves (in particular, by Alfvén waves). A very short growth time and rapid variations of some gamma-ray bursts may be easily explained in this case.  相似文献

It has been found that in general relativity slow down due to the energy losses through charged particles outflow in plasma magnetosphere strongly depends on star’s compactness parameter and is more faster for the neutron star with comparison to that for the strange star of the same mass. Comparison with astrophysical observations on pulsars spin down precise data may provide important information about star’s compactness parameter and consequently an evidence for the strange star existence and, thus, serve as a test for distinguishing it from the neutron star.  相似文献

We consider a simple qualitative model to estimate the time-scale forneutronstrange matter decay in dense stellar environments. It is argued that a large mismatch between the former and the microscopic weak interaction time-scale suggests that a dual population of both types of compact objects is unlikely. Assuming the correctness of the strange matter hypothesis all of them should be strange stars. If one instead postulates accretion as the decisive feature for the conversion, a consideration of neutron stars structure indicates a fairly narrow range for the onset of the critical density before the corresponding Chandrasekhar mass is achieved.  相似文献

We study acoustic oscillations (eigenfrequencies, velocity distributions, damping times) of normal crusts of strange stars. These oscillations are very specific because of huge density jump at the interface between the normal crust and the strange matter core. The oscillation problem is shown to be self-similar. For a low (but non-zero) multipolarity l , the fundamental mode (without radial nodes) has a frequency of ∼300 Hz and mostly horizontal oscillation velocity; other pressure modes have frequencies ≳20 kHz and almost radial oscillation velocities. The latter modes are similar to radial oscillations (having approximately the same frequencies and radial velocity profiles). The oscillation spectrum of strange stars with crust differs from the spectrum of neutron stars. If detected, acoustic oscillations would allow one to discriminate between strange stars with crust and neutron stars and constrain the mass and radius of the star.  相似文献

We investigate the influence of the following parameters on the crust properties of strange stars: the strange quark mass (m s), the strong coupling constant (αc) and the vacuum energy density (B). It is found that the mass density at the crust base of strange stars cannot reach the neutron drip density. For a conventional parameter set of m s=200 MeV, B 1/4 = 145 MeV and αc = 0.3, the maximum density at the crust base of a typical strange star is only 5.5 × 1010 gcm-3, and correspondingly the maximum crust mass is 1.4 ×10-6 M. Subsequently, we present the thermal structure and the cooling behavior of strange stars with crusts of different thickness, and under different diquark pairing gaps. Our work might provide important clues for distinguishing strange stars from neutron stars.  相似文献

The gamma-ray burst GR170817 A associated with GW170817 is subluminous and subenergetic compared with other typical short gamma-ray bursts. It may be due to a relativistic jet viewed off-axis, or a structured jet or cocoon emission. Giant flares from magnetars may possibly be ruled out. However, the luminosity and energetics of GRB 170817 A are coincident with those of magnetar giant flares. After the coalescence of a binary neutron star, a hypermassive neutron star may be formed. The hypermassive neutron star may have a magnetar-strength magnetic field. During the collapse of this hypermassive neutron star, magnetic field energy will also be released. This giant-flare-like event may explain the luminosity and energetics of GRB 170817 A. Bursts with similar luminosity and energetics are expected in future neutron star-neutron star or neutron star-black hole mergers.  相似文献

Hydrodynamic simulations of the merger of stellar mass black hole-neutron star binaries are compared with mergers of binary neutron stars. The simulations are Newtonian but take into account the emission and back-reaction of gravitational waves. The use of a physical nuclear equation of state allows us to include the effects of neutrino emission. For low neutron star-to-black hole mass ratios, the neutron star transfers mass to the black hole during a few cycles of orbital decay and subsequent widening before finally being disrupted, whereas for ratios near unity the neutron star is destroyed during its first approach. A gas mass between approximately 0.3 and approximately 0.7 M middle dot in circle is left in an accretion torus around the black hole and radiates neutrinos at a luminosity of several times 1053 ergs s-1 during an estimated accretion timescale of about 0.1 s. The emitted neutrinos and antineutrinos annihilate into e+/- pairs with efficiencies of 1%-3% and rates of up to approximately 2x1052 ergs s-1, thus depositing an energy Enunu&d1; less, similar1051 ergs above the poles of the black hole in a region that contains less than 10-5 M middle dot in circle of baryonic matter. As a neutron star spins down, the nuclear matter is continuously converted into quark matter due to the core density increase, and then latent heat is released. We have investigated the thermal evolution of neutron stars undergoing such deconfinement phase transition. We have taken into account the conversion in the frame of the general theory of relativity. The released energy has been estimated as a function of changed rate of deconfinement baryon number. The numerical solutions to the cooling equation are seen to be very different from those without the heating effect. The results show that neutron stars may be heated to higher temperatures which is well matched with pulsar's data despite the onset of fast cooling in neutron stars with quark matter cores. It is also found that the heating effect has a magnetic field strength dependence. This feature could be particularly interesting for high temperatures of low-field millisecond pulsars at a later stage. The high temperature could fit the observed temperature for PSR J0437−4715.  相似文献

Recent observations have shown that some compact stellar binaries radiate the highest energy light in the universe. The challenge has been to determine the nature of the compact object and whether the very high energy gamma-rays are ultimately powered by pulsar winds or relativistic jets. Multiwavelength observations have shown that one of the three gamma-ray binaries known so far, PSR B1259−63, is a neutron star binary and that the very energetic gamma-rays from this source and from another gamma-ray binary, LS I +61 303, may be produced by the interaction of pulsar winds with the wind from the companion star. At this time it is an open question whether the third gamma-ray binary, LS 5039, is also powered by a pulsar wind or a microquasar jet, where relativistic particles in collimated jets would boost the energy of the wind from the stellar companion to TeV energies. The constraints on the properties of neutron star matter from the mass of neutron star PSR J1614-2230 are examined in the framework of the relativistic mean field theory. We find that there are little differences between the σ potentials of large mass neutron star and those of canonnical mass neutron star. For potentials of ω, ρ, neutrons and electrons, the values corresponding to the large mass neutron star are larger than those to the canonnical mass neutron star as the baryon number density is more than a certain value. We also find that for the relative particle number density of electrons, muons, neutrons and protons and the pressure of the neutron star, the values corresponding to the large mass neutron star are far larger than those to the canonnical mass neutron star. For the relative particle number density of hyperons Λ, Σ?, Σ0, Σ+ and Ξ?, the values corresponding to the large mass neutron star are far smaller than those to the canonnical mass neutron star. These mean that the larger mass of neutron star is more advantageous to the production of protons but is not advantageous to the production of hyperons.  相似文献
