The hybrid kinetic model supports comprehensive simulation of the interaction between different spatial and energetic elements of the Europa moon-magnetosphere system with respect to variable upstream magnetic field and flux or density distributions of plasma and energetic ions, electrons, and neutral atoms. This capability is critical for improving the interpretation of the existing Europa flyby measurements from the Galileo orbiter mission, and for planning flyby and orbital measurements (including the surface and atmospheric compositions) for future missions. The simulations are based on recent models of the atmosphere of Europa ( [Cassidy et al., 2007] and [Shematovich et al., 2005]). In contrast to previous approaches with MHD simulations, the hybrid model allows us to fully take into account the finite gyroradius effect and electron pressure, and to correctly estimate the ion velocity distribution and the fluxes along the magnetic field (assuming an initial Maxwellian velocity distribution for upstream background ions). Non-thermal distributions of upstream plasma will be addressed in future work. Photoionization, electron-impact ionization, charge exchange and collisions between the ions and neutrals are also included in our model. We consider two models for background plasma: (a) with O++ ions; (b) with O++ and S++ ions. The majority of O2 atmosphere is thermal with an extended cold population (Cassidy et al., 2007). A few first simulations already include an induced magnetic dipole; however, several important effects of induced magnetic fields arising from oceanic shell conductivity will be addressed in later work.  相似文献

This paper presents an overview of numerical simulation studies of fast collisionless shocks and compares these simulation results with observations of the Earth's bow shock and theoretical works. Especially, we review the structure and stationarity of the supercritical quasi-perpendicular shocks. In situ observations indicate that these shocks are generally quasi-stationary whereas full particle simulations as well as hybrid simulations often present a strong nonstationary behavior, a shock self-reformation. The simulation results, along with theoretical and observational works, suggest that the classical models of the quasi-stationary structure generated by reflected protons or by dispersive whistlers are not generally applicable for the supercritical quasi-perpendicular shocks and other phenomena are to be included into the model to ensure the observed quasi-stationarity: The role of a small scale turbulence and shock ripples is investigated. The downstream turbulence and the electron dynamics in the quasi-perpendicular shocks are also discussed.  相似文献

We study cosmic-ray acceleration in young Type Ia Supernova Remnants (SNRs) by means of test-particle diffusive shock acceleration theory and 1-D hydrodynamical simulations of their evolution. In addition to acceleration at the forward shock, we explore the particle acceleration at the reverse shock in the presence of a possible substantial magnetic field, and consequently the impact of this acceleration on the particle spectra in the remnant. We investigate the time evolution of the spectra for various time-dependent profiles of the magnetic field in the shocked region of the remnant. We test a possible influence on particle spectra of the Alfvénic drift of scattering centers in the precursor regions of the shocks. In addition, we study the radiation spectra and morphology in a broad band from radio to gamma-rays. It is demonstrated that the reverse shock contribution to the cosmic-ray particle population of young Type Ia SNRs may be significant, modifying the spatial distribution of particles and noticeably affecting the volume-integrated particle spectra in young SNRs. In particular spectral structures may arise in test-particle calculations that are often discussed as signatures of non-linear cosmic-ray modification of shocks. Therefore, the spectrum and morphology of emission, and their time evolution, differ from pure forward-shock solutions.  相似文献

We have studied the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction using a 3-D electromagnetic particle code. The results for an unmagnetized solar wind plasma streaming past a dipole magnetic field show the formation of a magnetopause and a magnetotail, the penetration of energetic particles into cusps and radiation belt and dawn-dusk asymmetries. The effects of interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) have been investigated in a similar way as done by MHD simulations. The simulation results with a southward IMF show the shrunk magnetosphere with great particle entry into the cusps and nightside magnetosphere. This is a signature of a magnetic reconnection at the dayside magnetopause. After a quasi-stable state is established with an unmagnetized solar wind we switched on a solar wind with an northward IMF. In this case the significant changes take place in the magnetotail. The waving motion was seen in the magnetotail and its length was shortened. This phenomena are consistent with the reconnections which occur at the high latitude magnetopause. In our simulations kinetic effects will determine the self-consistent anomalous resistivity in the magnetopause that causes reconnections.Deceased January 24, 1993; R. Bunemanet al. 1993.  相似文献

The electron-cyclotron maser is believed to be the source of microwave spike bursts often observed during solar and stellar flares. Partial absorption of this radiation as it propagates through the corona can produce plasma heating and soft X-ray emission over an extended region. In this paper, the propagation and absorption of the maser radiation during solar flares are examined through linear theory and electro-magnetic particle simulations. It is shown using linear theory that strong absorption of the radiation should occur as it propagates towards the second harmonic layer where the magnetic field is half as strong as in the emission region. Only radiation propagating nearly parallel to the magnetic field in a low-temperature plasma may be able to escape under certain, limited conditions. Finite temperature effects can cause radiation propagating nearly perpendicular to the magnetic field to refract, causing enhanced absorption. Particle simulations are then used to evaluate the nonlinear response of the plasma as the maser radiation propagates through the absorption layer. It is shown that some of the maser radiation is able to escape through a process of absorption below the second harmonic of the local gyrofrequency and re-emission above it. The fraction able to escape is much higher than that predicted by linear theory, although the amount of escaping energy is only a small fraction of the incident energy. The bulk of incident energy goes into the perpendicular heating of the ambient electrons, with the rate of energy absorption showing no signs of leveling off during the simulations. This indicates that the absorption layer does not become optically thin after continuous heating by the maser radiation. A few electrons are accelerated to several tens of keVs as a result of the heating.  相似文献

Energetic proton (Ep ? 50 keV) and magnetic field observations during crossings of the Earth's Bow Shock by the IMP-7 and 8 spacecraft are incorporated in this work in order to examine the effect of the Bow Shock on a pre-existing proton population under different “interplanetary magnetic field-Bow Shock” configurations, as well as the conditions for the presence of the Bow Shock associated energetic proton intensity enhancements. The presented observations indicate that the dominant process for the efficient acceleration of ambient energetic particles to energies exceeding ~ 50 keV is by “gradient-B” drifting parallel to the induced electric field at quasi-perpendicular Bow Shocks under certain well defined limitations deriving from the finite and curved Bow Shock surface. It is shown that the proton acceleration at the Bow Shock is most efficient for high values of the upstream magnetic field (in general B1 > 8γ), high upstream plasma speed and expanded Bow Shock fronts, as well as for directions of the induced electric field oriented almost parallel to the flanks of the Bow Shock, i.e. when the drift distance of protons parallel to the electric field at the shock front is considerably smaller than the local radius of curvature of the Bow Shock. The implications of the presented observations of Bow Shock crossings as to the source of the energetic proton intensity enhancements are discussed.  相似文献

Analysis of global hybrid simulations of Mercury’s magnetosphere-solar wind interaction is presented for northward and southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) orientations in the context of MESSENGER’s first two encounters with Mercury. The global kinetic simulations reveal the basic structure of this interaction, including a bow shock, ion foreshock, magnetosheath, cusp regions, magnetopause, and a closed ion ring belt formed around the planet within the magnetosphere. The two different IMF orientations induce different locations of ion foreshock and different magnetospheric properties: the dayside magnetosphere is smaller and cusps are at lower latitudes for southward IMF compared to northward IMF whereas for southward IMF the nightside magnetosphere is larger and exhibits a thin current sheet with signatures of magnetic reconnection and plasmoid formation. For the two IMF orientations the ion foreshock and quasi-parallel magnetosheath manifest ion-beam-driven large-amplitude oscillations, whereas the quasi-perpendicular magnetosheath shows ion-temperature-anisotropy-driven wave activity. The ions in Mercury’s belt remain quasi-trapped for a limited time before they are either absorbed by Mercury’s surface or escape from the magnetosphere. The simulation results are compared with MESSENGER’s observations.  相似文献

A mechanism of the Earth's magnetospheric substorm is proposed. It is suggested that the MHD waves may propagate across the magnetopause from the magnetosheath into the magnetotail and will be dissipated in the plasma sheet, heating the plasma and accelerating the particles. When the solar wind parameters change, the Poynting flux of the waves transferred from the magnetosheath into the tail, may be greater than 1018 erg s?1. The heated plasma and accelerated particles in the plasma sheet will be injected into the inner magnetosphere, and this may explain the process of the ring current formation and auroral substorm. The Alfvén wave can only propagate along the magnetic force line into the magnetosphere in the open magnetosphere, but the magnetosonic wave can propagate in both the open and closed magnetosphere. When the IMF turns southward, the configuration of the magnetosphere will change from a nearly closed model into some kind of open one. The energy flux of Alfvén waves is generally larger than that of the magnetosonic wave. This implies that it is easy to produce substorms when the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) has a large southward component, but the substorm can also be produced even if the IMF is directed northward.  相似文献

We present numerical simulations of the thermal and dynamical histories of solid particles (chondrules and their precursors—treated as 1-mm silicate spheres) during passage of an adiabatic shock wave through a particle-gas suspension in a minimum-mass solar nebula. The steady-state equations of energy, momentum, and mass conservation are derived and integrated for both solids and gas under a variety of shock conditions and particle number densities using the free-molecular-flow approximation. These simulations allow us to investigate both the heating and cooling of particles in a shock wave and to compare the time and distance scales associated with their processing to those expected for natural chondrules. The interactions with the particles cause the gas to achieve higher temperatures and pressures both upstream and downstream of the shock than would be reached otherwise. The cooling rates of the particles are found to be nonlinear but agree approximately with the cooling rates inferred for chondrules by laboratory simulations. The initial concentration of solids upstream of the shock controls the cooling rates and the distances over which they are processed: Lower concentrations cool more slowly and over longer distances. These simulations are consistent with the hypothesis that large-scale shocks, e.g., those due to density waves or gravitational instabilities, were the dominant mechanism for chondrule formation in the nebula.  相似文献

In this concise review of the recent developments in relativistic shock theory in the Universe we restrict ourselves to shocks that do not exhibit quantum effects. On the other hand, emphasis is given to the formation of shocks under both non-magnetised and magnetised conditions. We only briefly discuss particle acceleration in relativistic shocks where much of the results are still preliminary. Analytical theory is rather limited in predicting the real shock structure. Kinetic instability theory is briefed including its predictions and limitations. A recent self-similar relativistic shock theory is described which predicts the average long-term shock behaviour to be magnetised and to cause reasonable power-law distributions for energetic particles. The main focus in this review is on numerical experiments on highly relativistic shocks in (i) pair and (ii) electron-nucleon plasmas and their limitations. These simulations do not validate all predictions of analytic and self-similar theory and so far they do not solve the injection problem and the self-modification by self-generated cosmic rays. The main results of the numerical experiments discussed in this review are: (i) a confirmation of shock evolution in non-magnetised relativistic plasma in 3D due to either the lepton-Weibel instability (in pair plasmas) or to the ion-Weibel instability; (ii) the sensitive dependence of shock formation on upstream magnetisation which causes suppression of Weibel modes for large upstream magnetisation ratios σ>10−3; (iii) the sensitive dependence of particle dynamics on the upstream magnetic inclination angle θ Bn , where particles of θ Bn >34° cannot escape upstream, leading to the distinction between ‘subluminal’ and ‘superluminal’ shocks; (iv) particles in ultra-relativistic shocks can hardly overturn the shock and escape to upstream; they may oscillate around the shock ramp for a long time, so to speak ‘surfing it’ and thereby becoming accelerated by a kind of SDA; (v) these particles form a power-law tail on the downstream distribution; their limitations are pointed out; (vi) recently developed methods permit the calculation of the radiation spectra emitted by the downstream high-energy particles; (vii) the Weibel-generated downstream magnetic fields form large-amplitude vortices which could be advected by the downstream flow to large distances from the shock and possibly contribute to an extended strong field region; (viii) if cosmic rays are included, Bell-like modes can generate upstream magnetic turbulence at short and, by diffusive re-coupling, also long wavelengths in nearly parallel magnetic field shocks; (ix) advection of such large-amplitude waves should cause periodic reformation of the quasi-parallel shock and eject large-amplitude magnetic field vortices downstream where they contribute to turbulence and to maintaining an extended region of large magnetic fields.  相似文献

We present results of analytical studies and 2D3V PIC simulations of electron-positron plasma cloud collisions. We concentrate on the problem of quasi-static magnetic field generation. It is shown from linear theory, using relativistic two-fluid equations for electron-positron plasmas, that the generation of a quasi-static magnetic field can be associated with the counter-streaming instability. A two-dimensional relativistic particle simulation provides good agreement with the above linear theory and that, in the nonlinear stage of the instability, about 5.3% of the initial plasma flow energy can be converted to magnetic field energy. It is also shown from the simulation that the quasi-static magnetic field undergoes a collision-less change of structure, leading to large scale, long living structures and the production of high-energy particles. These processes may be important for understanding of production of high-energy particles in the region where two pulsar winds collide. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The magnetic field in the middle magnetosphere of Jupiter was suggested to be the planetary dipole field plus a perturbation field due to a current sheet (Smith et al, 1974). Since no data of the low energy plasma are available the existence of a plasma sheet could not be confirmed directly. In this paper we show how the plasma pressure and density-can be derived from the magnetic field in the framework of a self-consistent theory. For the magnetic field model proposed by Goertz et al. (1976c) we compute the isobars and isodensity lines and confirm the existence of a thin plasma sheet.  相似文献

By direct numerical simulations we investigate the nonlinear dynamics of a compressible Hall Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) plasma. At small scales, where the Hall effect dominates, we found an increase of the compressibility of the system and the breakdown of the strong link between velocity and magnetic fields, typical of usual MHD. Moreover, we find that small-scale fluctuations are characterized by an anti-correlation between density and magnetic field intensity. These features characterize the excitation of a quasi-perpendicular magnetosonic turbulence that can be interpreted as the small-scale signature of the break-down of the MHD nonlinear energy cascade due to Hall effect. Fluctuations with the same properties, based on measurements by Cluster spacecraft in space plasma turbulence during different magnetopause crossings, have been recently observed.  相似文献

Collisionless shocks in turbulent space plasmas accelerate particles by the Fermi mechanism to ultrarelativistic energies. The interaction of accelerated particles with the plasma inflow produces extended supersonic MHD flows of multicomponent plasma. We investigate the instabilities of a flow of three-component turbulent plasma with relativistic particles against long-wavelength perturbations with scales larger than the accelerated particle transport mean free path and the initial turbulence scales. The presence of turbulence allows us to formulate the system of single-fluid equations, the equation of motion for the medium as a whole, and the induction equation for the magnetic field with turbulent magnetic and kinematic viscosities. The current of accelerated particles enters into the induction equation with an effective magnetic diffusion coefficient. We have calculated the local growth rates of the perturbations related to the nonresonant long-wavelength instability of the current of accelerated particles for MHD perturbations in the WKB approximation. The amplification of long-wavelength magnetic field perturbations in the flow upstream of the shock front can affect significantly the maximum energies of the particles accelerated by a collisionless shock and can lead to the observed peculiarities of the synchrotron X-ray radiation in supernova remnants.  相似文献

Using a 2 1/2-D fully relativistic electromagnetic particle-in-cell code (PIC) we have investigated a potential electron acceleration mechanism in solar flares. The free energy is provided by ions which have a ring velocity distribution about the magnetic field direction. Ion rings may be produced by perpendicular shocks, which could in turn be generated by the super-Alfvénic motion of magnetic flux tubes emerging from the photosphere or by coronal mass ejections (CMEs). Such ion distributions are known to be unstable to the generation of lower hybrid waves, which have phase velocities in excess of the electron thermal speed parallel to the field and can, therefore, resonantly accelerate electrons in that direction. The simulations show the transfer of perpendicular ion energy to energetic electrons via lower hybrid wave turbulence. With plausible ion ring velocities, the process can account for the observationally inferred fluxes and energies of non-thermal electrons during the impulsive phase of flares. Our results also show electrostatic wave generation close to the plasma frequency: we suggest that this is due to a bump-in-tail instability of the electron distribution.  相似文献

On the escape of particles from cosmic ray modified shocks   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Stationary solutions to the problem of particle acceleration at shock waves in the non-linear regime, when the dynamical reaction of the accelerated particles on the shock cannot be neglected, are known to show a prominent energy flux escaping from the shock towards upstream infinity. On physical grounds, the escape of particles from the upstream region of a shock has to be expected in all those situations in which the maximum momentum of accelerated particles,   p max  , decreases with time, as is the case for the Sedov–Taylor phase of expansion of a shell supernova remnant, when both the shock velocity and the cosmic ray induced magnetization decrease. In this situation, at each time t , particles with momenta larger than   p max( t )  leave the system from upstream, carrying away a large fraction of the energy if the shock is strongly modified by the presence of cosmic rays. This phenomenon is of crucial importance for explaining the cosmic ray spectrum detected at the Earth. In this paper, we discuss how this escape flux appears in the different approaches to non-linear diffusive shock acceleration, and especially in the quasi-stationary semi-analytical kinetic ones. We apply our calculations to the Sedov–Taylor phase of a typical supernova remnant, including in a self-consistent way particle acceleration, magnetic field amplification and the dynamical reaction on the shock structure of both particles and fields. Within this framework, we calculate the temporal evolution of the maximum energy reached by the accelerated particles and of the escape flux towards upstream infinity. The latter quantity is directly related to the cosmic ray spectrum detected at the Earth.  相似文献

Kinematic characteristics of electrons and protons in the magnetic reconnecting current sheet in the presence of a guide field are investigated. Particle trajectories are calculated for different values of the guide field by a test-particle calculation. The relationship between the final energy and the initial position has also been studied. We found that the addition of a guide field not only allows particles to get more energy and not only results in the separation of electrons and protons, but also causes the reconnecting electric field to selectively accelerate electrons and protons for different initial positions. The energy spectrum eventually obtained is the common power-law spectrum, and as the guide field increases, the index for the spectrum of electrons decreases rapidly. However, for a weak background magnetic field, proton spectra are not very sensitive to the guide field; but for a strong background field, the dependence of the spectrum index is similar to the electron spectrum. Meanwhile, kinematic characteristics of the accelerated particles in the current sheet including multiple X-points and O-points were also investigated. The result indicates that the existence of the multiple X- and O-points helps particles trapped in the accelerating region to gain more energy, and yields the double or multiple power-law feature.  相似文献

We propose a new model for explaining the observations of preferential heating of heavy ions in the polar solar corona. We consider that a large number of small scale shock waves can be present in the solar corona, as suggested by recent observations of polar coronal jets by the Hinode and STEREO spacecraft. The heavy ion energization mechanism is, essentially, the ion reflection off supercritical quasi-perpendicular collisionless shocks in the corona and the subsequent acceleration by the motional electric field E=−(1/c)V ×B. The acceleration due to E is perpendicular to the magnetic field, giving rise to large temperature anisotropy with T?T, which can excite ion cyclotron waves. Also, heating is more than mass proportional with respect to protons, because the heavy ion orbit is mostly upstream of the quasi-perpendicular shock foot. The observed temperature ratios between O5+ ions and protons in the polar corona, and between α particles and protons in the solar wind are easily recovered. We also discuss the mechanism of heavy ion reflection, which is based on ion gyration in the magnetic overshoot of the shock.  相似文献

A scenario is proposed to explain the preferential heating of minor ions and differential-streaming velocity between minor ions and protons observed in the solar corona and in the solar wind. It is demonstrated by test-particle simulations that minor ions can be nearly fully picked up by intrinsic Alfvén-cyclotron waves observed in the solar wind based on the observed wave energy density. Both high-frequency ion-cyclotron waves and low-frequency Alfvén waves play crucial roles in the pickup process. A minor ion can first gain a high magnetic moment through the resonant wave–particle interaction with ion-cyclotron waves, and then this ion with a large magnetic moment can be trapped by magnetic mirror-like field structures in the presence of the low-frequency Alfvén waves. As a result, the ion is picked up by these Alfvén-cyclotron waves. However, minor ions can only be partially picked up in the corona because of the low wave energy density and low plasma β. During the pickup process, minor ions are stochastically heated and accelerated by Alfvén-cyclotron waves so that they are hotter and flow faster than protons. The compound effect of Alfvén waves and ion-cyclotron waves is important in the heating and acceleration of minor ions. The kinetic properties of minor ions from simulation results are generally consistent with in-situ and remote features observed in the solar wind and solar corona.  相似文献
