Recent observations show the evidence of warm ionized interstellar medium (WIM) in some dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs). The presence of WIM should be accounted for since diffuse plasma in dE is easy to escape owing to galactic wind during the star-burst epoch and ram pressure of intra-cluster medium. In this paper, we present a possible scenario of origin of dE with WIM. By estimating time-scale of ram pressure stripping of interstellar medium, we find dE with WIM is able to emerge when a field dwarf galaxy enters into a cluster of galaxies. Then, the author suggests that low surface brightness galaxies and blue compact dwarf galaxies can be a precursor of dE with WIM.  相似文献

One of the most-outstanding problems in the gravitational collapse scenario of early structure formation is the cooling of primordial gas to allow for small-mass objects to form. As the neutral primordial gas is a poor radiator at temperatures   T ≤ 104 K  , molecular hydrogen is needed for further cooling down to temperatures   T ∼ 100 K  . The formation of molecular hydrogen is catalyzed by the presence of free electrons, which could be provided by the ionization due to an early population of cosmic rays (CRs). In order to investigate this possibility, we developed a code to study the effects of ionizing CRs on the thermal and chemical evolution of primordial gas. We found that CRs can provide enough free electrons needed for the formation of molecular hydrogen, and therefore can increase the cooling ability of such primordial gas under following conditions. A dissociating photon flux with   F < 10−18 erg cm−2 Hz−1 s−1  , initial temperature of the gas  ∼103 K  , total gas number densities   n ≥ 1 cm−3  , and cosmic-ray sources with     .  相似文献

It has been suggested that the highest-energy cosmic rays might be protons resulting from collapsing cosmic strings in the Universe. We point out that this mechanism, although attractive, has important shortcomings, notably the fact that gamma rays produced along with the protons and those produced by the protons in their interactions with the cosmic background radiation generate cascades in the Universe and result in unacceptably high fluxes of cosmic gamma rays in the region of hundreds of MeV.  相似文献

Statistical acceleration of cosmic rays in a turbulent medium is considered. Charged particles are assumed to acquire energy in a bounded region of space and leave the acceleration region due to spatial diffusion caused by the scattering of cosmic rays in turbulent magnetic fields. Analytical solutions of the cosmic ray transport equation are obtained and equilibrium space-energy distributions of high-energy particles are studied in the acceleration region and beyond.  相似文献

This contribution to the 100th commemoration of the discovery of cosmic rays (6–8 August, 2012 in Bad Saarow, Germany) is about observations of those cosmic rays that are sensitive to the structure and the dynamics of the heliosphere. This places them in the energy range of 107–1010 eV. For higher energies the heliosphere becomes transparent; below this energy range the particles become strictly locked into the solar wind. Rather than give a strict chronological development, the paper is divided into distinct topics. It starts with the Pioneer/Voyager missions to the outer edges of the heliosphere, because the most recent observations indicate that a distinct boundary of the heliosphere might have been reached at the time of the meeting. Thereafter, the Ulysses mission is described as a unique one because it is still the only spacecraft that has explored the heliosphere at very high latitudes. Next, anomalous cosmic rays, discovered in 1972–1974, constitute a separate component that is ideally suited to study the acceleration and transport of energetic particles in the heliosphere. At this point the history and development of ground-based observations is discussed, with its unique contribution to supply a stable, long-term record. The last topic is about solar energetic particles with energies up to ∼1010 eV.  相似文献

Summary Recent developments in the theory of element production and the chemical evolution of the galaxy are presented. Following this, observational data and their interpretation are given. A case by case analysis of results for D, He, Li and CNO isotope data in the disk and center of our galaxy is presented; previous results for element gradients are also summarized. The primordial abundances of D and He cannot be directly obtained from observations; corrections for stellar processing are discussed. From these data and the Li abundances, it appears that the abundance of the light elements is consistent with the standard big bang. In agreement with previous results, the range of, the baryon to photon ratio, is 5–8 10–10. If the amount of non-baryonic matter is small, these results indicate an open universe, in the standard big bang model.New data show a gradient in the (12C/13C) and (16O/18O) ratios with galactocentric distance, DGC. The presence of a gradient in the (14N/15N) ratio is less clear and there is no measurable gradient in the (32S/34S) ratio. In the interstellar medium near the sun, the carbon isotope ratio is –20 percent lower than the solar system ratio. This indicates that there has been only a moderate amount of enrichment of the nearby interstellar medium since the formation of the solar system. These results and previously determined galactic element gradients are interpreted in the framework of chemical evolution models. Delayed recycling of nucleosynthesis products is essential for the correct interpretation of the results. Comparisons of data with galactic evolution models are discussed. This article was processed by the author using the Springer-Verlag TEX AAR macro package 1991  相似文献

We examine the possibility that recent data on cosmic ray anisotropies presented by the AGASA group may lead to the conclusion that our Galactic Center is a major source of the highest energy cosmic rays in our galaxy. We discuss how such a source would contribute to the magnitude and directional properties of the observed flux when measured against a background of extragalactic cosmic rays. We do this using the results of previous propagation calculations and our own more recent calculations which are specifically for a Galactic Center source. We find that the AGASA data can indeed be plausibly interpreted in this way and also that an argument can be made that the Galactic Center has the appropriate physical properties for acceleration to energies of the order of 1018 eV. We show that data from the SUGAR array are compatible with the AGASA result.  相似文献

A simple model of cosmic ray propagation is proposed from which the major experimental results can be derived: The model reproduces the observed nuclear abundances and accounts for the observed changes of nuclear composition with energy, the high degree of isotropy of cosmic ray flux at all energies, and the high degree of its constancy throughout the history of the Solar System. It is consistent with the observed size distribution of extensive airshowers, the intensity and energy distribution of the electron component, and the diffuse emission of γ-rays and radio waves. The model is characterized by the two basic assumptions: (1) that cosmic rays have been injected at an unchanging rate by sources located in the galactic spiral arms and (2) that a large-scale magnetic field retains all particles in our galaxy, where they interact with interstellar gas, so that all complex nuclei are finally fragmented and their energy dissipated in meson production and electro-magnetic interactions.  相似文献

A theoretical basis for modifying Newtonian dynamics on a galactic scale can be obtained by postulating that cosmic rays interact with graviton exchanges between distant masses. This assumes that these charged particles move under the influence of local electromagnetic fields rather than the weak gravitational fields of distant matter. It leads to an enhancement of graviton exchanges between distant masses via an additional gravitational force term inversely proportional to distance. At planetary and local interstellar distances this predicts an extremely small additional gravitational force, but it can become significant on a galactic scale. The model is used here to predict rotational velocities in a wide range of galaxies including the Milky Way, Andromeda (M31) and some galaxies in the THINGS study. Results are obtained assuming a galactic cosmic ray density consistent with observations in the solar system. This approach is compared with the dark matter hypothesis and with Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND), the two primary postulates used to explain the constant rotational velocities observed in most galaxies.  相似文献

The internal stability of the fractal structure of interstellar clouds in the Galaxy is considered. The conditions under which gravitational interactions between components lead to disruption of the fractal structure are clarified. Model numerical calculations and analytical estimates of the characteristic time of decay of structures are made. It is found that this time is on the same order as the lifetime of interstellar molecular clouds determined from observations. Supernova remnants (SNRs) are one of the most energetic astrophysical events and are thought to be the dominant source of Galactic cosmic rays (CRs). A recent report on observations from the Fermi satellite has shown a signature of pion decay in the gamma-ray spectra of SNRs. This provides strong evidence that high-energy protons are accelerated in SNRs. The actual gamma-ray emission from pion decay should depend on the diffusion of CRs in the interstellar medium. In order to quantitatively analyse the diffusion of high-energy CRs from acceleration sites, we have performed test particle numerical simulations of CR protons using a three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulation of an interstellar medium swept-up by a blast wave. We analyse the diffusion of CRs at a length scale of order a few pc in our simulated SNR, and find the diffusion of CRs is precisely described by a Bohm diffusion, which is required for efficient acceleration at least for particles with energies above 30 TeV for a realistic interstellar medium. Although we find the possibility of a superdiffusive process (travel distance ∝ t0.75) in our simulations, its effect on CR diffusion at the length scale of the turbulence in the SNR is limited.  相似文献
