The inner regions of the circumstellar disk around Pictoris might be dust-free due to a possible planet which may have cleared up dust particles. We present a new observational technique based on the use of an anti-blooming CCD in order to directly image this zone. The structure of the disk is revealed down to 2 arcsec from the star (30 AU). We show that the Pic disk brightness is neutral inV, R, andI C , but drops down when going inward inB, possibly related to a change in the dust composition. We have used the ESO 10 m camera, TIMMI, to image with a very high angular resolution (PFoV: 0.3; FWHM:0.9) several main-sequence star disk candidates. Information on the -Pictoris dust disk has been obtained in a region largely inaccessible to previous observations: 0–80 AU, with a resolution of about 5 AU after deconvolution. Another promising target for 10 m imaging, 51 Ophiuchi, appears point-like.based on data collected at the European Southern Observatory (ESO), La Silla, Chile  相似文献

In this paper we present multicolor images of the Beta Pictoris disk, obtained with a new Coronograph, built at STScI, for ESO's New Technology Telescope. These B, V, and R observations probe the Beta Pictoris circumstellar disk in to a distance of 35 AU (2) from the central star. We derive surface brightness profiles for the disk and discuss the results in the context of two-component disk models (e.g. Backmanet al. 1992), which are based on fits to available optical and infrared data for Beta Pictoris's disk. These models generally imply that the disk is composed of 1) an outer disk extending from 100–1000 AU, with a midplane particle density decreasing as n(r) r–3, 2) a transition region extending from 10–100 AU with lower density and either smaller grains or a less steep spatial gradient than the outer component, 3) an innermost clear zone with even lower density.  相似文献

An analysis of solar flare data indicates that the graph of log(nt 3/(2–)) deviates late in the solar event from the straight line predicted for the infinite, unbounded interplanetary medium. It is shown by mathematical analysis, utilizing a model based on the radial diffusion coefficient D = Mr , with 1, that the deviation can be ascribed to the loss of flare particles through an external boundary at about 5–6 AU from the Sun. An inner region terminating at 5–6 AU, followed by an extensive region of increasingly less resistance to the diffusion of flare particles is also feasible and it is shown that measurements taken at the Earth cannot predict the extent of this outer region. The results are applicable to either the isotropic or highly anisotropic models. The constant diffusion model is shown to be inadequate since it requires a boundary 1.5 AU from the Sun. In view of the present and previous studies of solar flare data, it is asserted that the fundamental principle governing the diffusion of solar flare particles through interplanetary space is the radial diffusion coefficient mode of propagation.  相似文献

We construct a standard thin disk model taking into account the pressure from both gas and radiation, the opacity contributed by both electron scattering and absorption, and the gravity from both a central object and a disk. A simple and powerful technique for solving the non-linear equations is presented. Through a numerical algorithm for the two equationl for, , , all the disk quantities are expressed as the analytical function of, , . We also discuss the solutions in the limit cases 0, 1 and the parameter range of the linear approximation. From the numerical solutions and limit analyses, we found that it is not necessary to include the self-gravity of the disk.  相似文献

Hämeen-Anttila's (1984) analytical treatment of self-gravitating collisional particle disks is extended to include the particle spin. The equations derived for the coupled evolution of random velocities and spins indicate that friction and surface irregularity typically reduce the local velocity dispersion. Friction, and especially irregularity, also transfer significant amounts of random kinetic energy, E kin, to rotational energy, E rot. The equilibrium ratio E rot/Ekin = 2/(14 – 5) if the particles are spherical, and 2(1 + )/7 if they are irregular but frictionless, and being the coefficients of restitution and friction. These results are not only exact for identical, non-gravitating mass points, but are rather accurate even if finite size, self-gravitational forces, or size distribution are included. Applications to the dynamics of Saturn's rings suggest that the inclusion of rotation is able to reduce the geometrical thickness of the layer of centimeter-sized particles to about one half, at most. Pitch angle scattering of energetic particles (100 MeV) in the interplanetary medium are studied using Helios 1 and 2 magnetometer and plasma data during 1976 near the minimum of solar activity. An IMF configuration was used in the computer experiments which allowed the pitch angle diffusion coefficient, D and hence the parallel mean free path, to be determined. The radial mean free path was found to vary as r r -0.9 between 0.4 and 1 AU, but between 0.3 and 0.4 AU it decreases significantly. To reconcile our value of r at 1 AU, lying between 0.01 and 0.02 AU, with the average prompt solar proton event profile, an increasing value of r at lower radial distances would be required.  相似文献

The applicability of the properties of central configurations proceeding from the many-body problem to study of gaseous sphere cloud evolution during its gravitational contraction is justified. It is shown that the product runs to a constant value in the asymptotic time limit of simultaneous collision of all the particles of the cloud where is a form-factor of the potential energy and is a form-factor of the moment of inertia.The spherical bodies as well as ellipsoids of rotation and general ellipsoids with a one-dimensional mass distribution (k),k[0, 1] are found to possess the property =const.

We describe initial results of a program to image massive newly-formed stars with sub-arc second spatial resolution. We discuss high-precision diffraction-limited size measurements at =10 m made using the 3 m Lick telescope. The point-spread function has FWHM 0.7; deconvolution yields a spatial resolution of 0.35. We find that the core component of one such object, LkH 101, is unresolved at these scales, and we are able to set a 95%-confidence upper limit of 270 AU for the diameter of the circumstellar dust shell. This places the dust at the same radial scale as a strong ionized stellar wind region seen at radio wavelengths. Our observations, when combined with published spectral observations, rule out an optically thick circumstellar disk but allow a radially thin, anisotropic distribution of dust, or alternatively an isotropic distribution of dust with a narrow range of large grain sizes.  相似文献

An energy method is used to determine a condition for local instability of field lines in magnetohydrostatic equilibrium which are rooted in the photosphere. The particular equilibrium studied is isothermal and two-dimensional and may model a coronal arcade of loops where variations along the axis of the arcade are weak enough to be ignorable. If line tying conditions are modelled by perturbations that vanish on the photosphere, then, when the field is unsheared, the condition for stability is necessary and sufficient. However, when the axial field component is non-zero, so that the field is sheared, the stability condition is only sufficient.It is found that when < 0.34 the equilibrium is stable. When = 0.34 a magnetic neutral line appears at the photosphere and it is marginally stable. When > 0.34 a magnetic island is present and all the field lines inside the island are unstable as well as some beyond it. As increases, the size of the island and the extent of unstable field lines increase. The effect of the instability is likely to be to create small-scale filamentation in the solar corona and to enhance the global transport coefficients.  相似文献

Conclusions In the Newtonian case we have obtained an isotropic self-consistent distribution of gravitationally interacting point masses which satisfies the transport equation without collisions, and the gravitational equation for an arbitrary powerfunction density distribution =r–s, s<3.For =r–2 the analogous self-consistent solution was obtained for the anisotropic distribution function both in Newtonian and GTR cases.The GTR solutions with =r–2 have central redshifts which increase without limit in accordance with the law 1+zr–1/ as we approach the center. In the isotropic case, they appear to be stable when the mean velocities are much less than the velocity of light u<0.2c, >21.The hydrodynamic GTR solution was found for a perfect gas at constant temperature (but variable T=T(g00)1/2) which also has z for r0.We should like to thank K. Nine Orbiter 3 high-resolution photographs were examined at three sites for distributions of boulders around craters 110 m in diameter; three kinds of distributions were noted. Some had boulders inside and far outside (designated), others had boulders only inside or on their ramparts (), and some had no detectable boulders (). Additionally, shapes or morphologies of craters were classified according to their resemblance to one of three Jaffe models (1965); a third classification involved the depth of particulate overlay (Jaffe, 1965). Crater morphologies were classified (A) if they were relatively shallow with sharp, raised rims, (B) if they were rimless and shallow, and (C) if they were relatively deep and had low, broad rims. The data suggested that there were strong relationships between crater types and boulder distributions in which, generally, A-type was related to the-distribution, B-type to-distribution, and C-type to-distribution. Plots of numbers of craters of each crater type and each kind of boulder distribution versus steps of overlay for each site and for the totality of craters considered indicated that neither boulder distribution nor crater type represented orderly progression of age or erosional evolution. The apparent overlays for the A's and C's and for the's and's were similar, implying similar ages or stages of erosion. It is suggested that they represent two kinds of primary craters and that the A's are of impact origin while the C's are of volcanic origin. We consider the formation of cometlike and larger bodies in the trans-Neptunian region of the protoplanetary gas–dust disk. Once the particles have reached 1–10 cm in size through mutual collisions, they compact and concentrate toward the midplane of the disk to form a dust subdisk there. We show that after the subdisk has reached a critical density, its inner, equatorial layer that, in contrast to the two subsurface layers, contains no shear turbulence can be gravitationally unstable. The layer breaks up into 1012-cm clumps whose small fragments (109 cm) can rapidly contract to form bodies 10 km in size. We consider the sunward drift of dust particles at a velocity that decreases with decreasing radial distance as the mechanism of radial contraction and compaction of the layer that contributes to its gravitational instability and the formation of larger (100 km) planetesimals. Given all of the above processes, it takes 106 yr for planetesimals to form, which is an order of magnitude shorter than the lifetime of the gas–dust protoplanetary disk. A rapidly spinning, slowly accreting magnetic white dwarf (or X-ray pulsar) in hibernation is expected to result in rapid spindown as a result of the stretching and reconnection of magnetic field lines, leading to particle acceleration at the magnetospheric radiusoutside the corotation radius, and the propeller type ejection of magnetized synchrotron-emitting clouds. This may explain the non-thermal (radio and-rays) emission seen from the unique nearby AE Aquarii. Moving to Galactic distances we show how TeV-ray observations of pulsar-driven supernova remnants (with well-measured synchrotron X-ray spectra) allow us to obtain a direct measurement of the average magnetic field strength in the nebula. Finally, GeV to TeV observations of-ray blazars out to redshifts of 2 allow us to probe the intergalactic infrared radiation field, the Hubble constant and possibly the parameter of the Universe.  相似文献

Simultaneously measured line intensities of Ca+ K and H, H, H and He D3 are presented and compared with recent model calculations by Heasley and Milkey (1978). The model calculations are compatible with the observations. There is indication that the observed branching of the relation E(Ca+ K and H) E(H) depends on the widths of the Ca+-lines.  相似文献

We determine the radial component of the supergranular flow velocity by examining the center-to-limb variation of the Doppler velocity signal. We acquire individual Doppler images obtained with the MDI instrument on the SOHO spacecraft and process them to remove the p-mode oscillation signal, the axisymmetric flows, the convective blueshift signal, and instrumental artifacts. The remaining Doppler signal contains only non-axisymmetric flow structures. The Doppler signal from the horizontal flows in these structures varies like sin, where is the heliocentric angle from disk center. The Doppler signal from radial flows varies like cos. We fit the center-to-limb variation of the mean squared velocity signal to a straight line in sin2 over the central portion of the disk. The intercept of this line at disk center gives the amplitude of the radial component of the flow. The slope of the line gives the amplitude of the horizontal component. We find that the radial flows for typical supergranules have speeds about 10% that of their associated horizontal flows or about 30 m s–1. The ratio of the radial to horizontal flow speed increases from 9% to about 18% as the size of the structure decreases from >60 Mm to 5 Mm. We use data simulations to check these results and find a ratio that increases from 5% to only about 12% over the same range of sizes. These smaller ratios are attributed to an underestimation of the horizontal flow speeds due to the fact that the transverse component of the horizontal flow is not detected by Doppler measurements.  相似文献

Magnetic dips are generally assumed to be basic equilibrium configurations in quiescent solar prominences. Here we discuss two types of the magnetic dips which were considered in the literature: (1) dips resulting from a force-free magnetic equilibrium in the corona, and (2) magnetic dips which are formed in situations where the Lorentz force balances the weight of the prominence plasma. An important parameter which decides between these two cases is the plasma . For 1, the effect of the prominence material on the equilibrium structure is quite negligible and the case (1) holds. If, however, is larger, say between 0.1 and 1 or even higher, magnetic dips of the second kind are formed and they can be characterized by the angle 1 between the vertical and the direction of the field lines at the surface of the prominence structure. A simple and illustratory formula is derived to relate this angle to the plasma at the prominence center, namely ccot21. c=1 thus corresponds to 1=45°. Finally, we discuss the range of values of both c and 1 as deduced from various observations and conclude that the dips of the second kind are important for the prominence equilibria. We also suggest a new method for determination of the field-line inclination.  相似文献

Spectrum scans of the head of Comet Bradfield (1980t) covering the wavelength range 365–640 nm were made on two nights when the heliocentric distance of the comet varied from 0.55 to 0.58 AU. The emission features of the CN band at 388 nm and Swan band sequence of C2 at 474 nm, 516 nm, and 563 nm are identified and absolute fluxes in these bands as well as in the continuum are derived. The continuum energy distribution curves of the comet have been compared with those of the Sun and the star Crv (G5 III). An estimate of the number of C2 and CN molecules in the head of the comet has been made through the measured intensities of their respective bands lying in this region.  相似文献

On the basis of the erenkov line emission theory in the optically thick case, a new interpretation of intensity ratios H/H and H/H in broad-line radio-galaxies (BLRGs) is reported. Calculation shows that if the theoretical ratio H/H is just taken to be the mean observed value 0.21, equivalently, the parameterX(H)=3.0, then the expected ratio H/H=6.70 is almost the same as the observations. By comparing these values with the previous investigations of QSOs (X(H)=20.9), we conclude that the number density of neutral hydrogen gas in BLRGs is almost one order-of-magnitude smaller than that in the QSOs.Preliminary verification of the erenkov line emission has been obtained by Xuet al.
