The apparatus of a correlation gamma function is used to analyze the spatial clustering of galaxies in the Local Supercluster. In particular, we analyzed a sample corrected for the peculiar velocities of the Local Supercluster galaxies by using our original technique for separating groups of galaxies. It turned out that the peculiar velocities did not significantly distort the gamma function even for relatively small sample sizes. The distribution of the galaxies obeys a power-law decrease in density with an index of 0.6–0.7. We found evidence for a luminosity dependence of the degree of galaxy clustering within the volume under study.  相似文献

The comparison of the spatial distribution of galaxies in the surroundings of the nearest compact and loose groups of galaxies confirms that compact groups are very likely to be part of looser groups and shows that loose groups associated to compact groups tend to have higher spatial density than normal ones.  相似文献

We study morphology and luminosity segregation of galaxies in groups. We analyze the two catalogs of (∼2×400) groups which have been identified in the Nearby Optical Galaxy sample, by means of hierarchical and percolation `friends-of-friends' methods. We find that earlier-type (brighter) galaxies are more clustered and lie closer to the group centers, both in position and in velocity, than later-type (fainter) galaxies. Spatial segregations are stronger than kinematical segregations. These effects are generally detected at the ≳3-sigma level, with the exception of morphological segregation in velocity, which is the weakest effect. Our main results are confirmed by the analysis of statistically more reliable groups (with at least five members), and are strengthened by the detection of segregation in both hierarchical and percolation catalogs. Luminosity segregation is shown to be independent of morphology segregation. Our conclusions agree with a continuum of segregation properties of galaxies in systems, from low-mass groups to massive clusters. We present a study focusing on the nature of compact groups through the study of their elliptical galaxies. We determine central velocity dispersions (σo) for 18 bright elliptical galaxies located in the core of Hickson compact groups and a control sample of 12 brightbona fide ellipticals located in the field or very loose groups. Several tests are carried out to avoid systematic effects in σ measurements. We use these velocity dispersions to compare the position of 11 compact group galaxies in the Fundamental Plane to that of a large and homogeneous sample of elliptical galaxies (Burstein et al., 1987).We find that little or no significant difference exists, as far as the Fundamental Plane is concerned, between ellipticals in compact groups and their counterparts in other environments. The Eridanus galaxies follow the well-known radio—FIR correlation. The majority (70%) of these galaxies have their star formation rates below that of the Milky Way. The galaxies that have a significant excess of radio emission are identified as low luminosity AGNs based on their radio morphologies obtained from the GMRT observations. There are no powerful AGNs (L 20cm > 1023 W Hz−1) in the group. The two most far-infrared and radio luminous galaxies in the group have optical and HI morphologies suggestive of recent tidal interactions. The Eridanus group also has two far-infrared luminous but radio-deficient galaxies. It is believed that these galaxies are observed within a few Myr of the onset of an intense star formation episode after being quiescent for at least a 100 Myr. The upper end of the radio luminosity distribution of the Eridanus galaxies (L 20cm ∼ 1022 W Hz−1) is consistent with that of the field galaxies, other groups, and late-type galaxies in nearby clusters.  相似文献

Compact groups of galaxies are fruitful laboratories to study such processes as dynamical friction, tidal interaction, collision, and galaxy mergers. The largest survey of compact galaxy groups is the one of Shakhbazian, Petrosian, Baier, Tiersch. A programme to evaluate photometrical properties of the galaxies in the Shakhbazian groups has been started using the COSMOS/UKST catalogue of the Southern sky with δ ≤ + 2°30′. About a quarter of the Shakhbazian groups lie south of this declination limit. A list of 24 groups (Shkh 21, 24, 27, 30, 32, 33, 35, 81, 82, 83, 140, 141, 143, 144, 145, 146, 147, 148, 151, 152, 154, 261, 262, 263) is our first result.  相似文献

It has been shown that the radio emission properties of spiral galaxies, if the other conditions are the same, are determined rather by the presence of the close neighbours than by space density of galaxies around them. The rate of occurence of radio sources and their radio luminosities among the spiral members of groups of galaxies depend on the projected seperation between them and their nearest neighbour. The shorter this seperation the higher the probability of radio emission.  相似文献

The effect of observational selection on the relationship between the characteristics of groups of galaxies and their distances is discussed in this paper. For our groups the dependence of the pairwise distance between the members on the distance of the group is just that. For the groups of Geller and Huchra, on the other hand, the analogous dependence is distorted by the effect of their selection criteria for groups of galaxies. The average dispersion of the radial velocities of the galaxies for our groups is less than half that for the groups of Geller and Huchra, while the mass-to-luminosity ratio is smaller, on the average, by more than an order of magnitude in our case. Geller-Huchra groups with mass-to-luminosity ratios greater than 1000 are most likely unreal. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 50, No. 4, pp. 535–546 (November 2007).  相似文献

Results are presented from a spectral, photometric, and morphological study of two compact groups of compact galaxies (CGCG) from Shahbazian’s list. The observations were made on the 1.5-m ESO telescope and the 2.6-m telescope at the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory (BAO) during 1999–2000. These data are compared with data for the Shahbazian compact group 4. A high spatial density of galaxies, ranging from 10000 to 100000 galaxies per Mpc3, is observed in all the groups that were studied. The discovery of a Seyfert Sy1 galaxy in the Shahbazian 355 compact group is especially noteworthy. The direct photographs of the CGCGs that were studied contain no signs of merging or tidal interactions among the members of these groups. This suggests that the galaxies in these dense systems have a common origin. __________ Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 50, No. 3, pp. 347–353 (August 2007).  相似文献

We have searched for nearby dwarf galaxies in 27 northern groups with characteristic distances 8–15 Mpc based on the Second Palomar Sky Survey prints. In a total area of about 2000 square degrees, we have found 90 low-surface-brightness objects, more than 60% of which are absent from known catalogs and lists. We have classified most of these objects (~80%) as irregular dwarf systems. The first 21-cm line observations of the new objects with the 100-m Effelsberg radio telescope showed that the typical linear diameters (1–2 kpc), internal motions (~30 km s?1), and hydrogen masses (~2 × 107 M ) of the new galaxies correspond to those expected for the dwarf population of nearby groups.  相似文献

Compact groups are association of 4-8 galaxies with high spatial densities (Δρ/ρ∼10–20), but low velocity dispersion. Galaxy-galaxy interactions (e.g. close tidal encounters or mergers) are therefore likely to dominate any environmentally-dependent evolution of galaxies in these compact, highlocal-density, groups, unlike in the field, where galaxy densities are too low, and in clusters, where relative velocities are too high. We present here the results from spectroscopic and photometric observations of a new sample of compact groups in the Southern Sky, selected by an automatic detection algorithm applied to a digitized galaxy database. We have derived the X-ray luminosities of a sample of galaxies in groups, making careful allowance for contaminating intragroup emission. The L X: L B and L X: L FIR relations of spiral galaxies in groups appear to be indistinguishable from those in other environments, however the elliptical galaxies fall into two distinct classes. The first class is central-dominant group galaxies, which are very X-ray luminous and may be the focus of group cooling flows. All other early-type galaxies in groups belong to the second class, which populates an almost constant band of L X/ L B over the range 9.8< log  L B<11.3 . The X-ray emission from these galaxies can be explained by a superposition of discrete galactic X-ray sources together with a contribution from hot gas lost by stars, which varies a great deal from galaxy to galaxy. In the region where the optical luminosity of the non-central group galaxies overlaps with the dominant galaxies, the dominant galaxies are over an order of magnitude more luminous in X-rays.
We also compared these group galaxies with a sample of isolated early-type galaxies, and used previously published work to derive L X: L B relations as a function of environment. The non-dominant group galaxies have mean L X/ L B ratios very similar to those of isolated galaxies, and we see no significant correlation between L X/ L B and environment. We suggest that previous findings of a steep L X: L B relation for early-type galaxies result largely from the inclusion of group-dominant galaxies in samples.

A sample of galaxy groups is investigated for the occurence of Seyfert objects within them. The velocity dispersion in groups with Seyfert galaxies is significantly larger than in groups without Seyfert galaxies. But there was not found any correlation between the galaxy density within the groups and the content of Seyfert galaxies.  相似文献

We analyse the two-point correlation function (2PCF) of galaxy groups identified from the 2-degree Field Galaxy Redshift Survey with the halo-based group finder recently developed by Yang et al. With this group catalogue we are able to estimate the 2PCFs for systems ranging from isolated galaxies to rich clusters of galaxies. The real-space correlation length obtained for these systems ranges from ∼4 to ∼15  h −1 Mpc, respectively. The observed correlation amplitude (and the corresponding bias factor) as a function of group abundance is well reproduced by associating galaxy groups with dark matter haloes in the standard Λ-cold dark matter model. Redshift distortions are clearly detected in the redshift-space correlation function, the degree of which is consistent with the assumption of gravitational clustering and halo bias in the cosmic density field. In agreement with previous studies we find a strong increase of the correlation length with the mean intergroup separation. Although well-determined observationally, we show that current theoretical predictions are not yet accurate enough to allow for stringent constraints on cosmological parameters. Finally, we use our results to explore the power-law nature of the 2PCF of galaxies. We split the 2PCF into one- and two-group terms, equivalent to the one- and two-halo terms in halo occupation models, and show that the power-law form of the 2PCF is broken, when only including galaxies in the more massive systems.  相似文献

The HI content of galaxies in the Eridanus group is studied using the GMRT observations and the HIPASS data. A significant HI deficiency up to a factor of 2–3 is observed in galaxies in the high galaxy density regions. The HI deficiency in galaxies is observed to be directly correlated to the local projected galaxy density, and inversely correlated to the line-of-sight radial velocity. Furthermore, galaxies with larger optical diameters are predominantly in the lower galaxy density regions. It is suggested that the HI deficiency in Eridanus is due to tidal interactions. In some galaxies, evidences of tidal interactions are seen. An important implication is that significant evolution of galaxies can take place in the group environment. In the hierarchical way of formation of clusters via mergers of groups, a fraction of the observed HI deficiency in clusters could have originated in groups. The co-existence of S0s and severely HI deficient galaxies in the Eridanus group suggests that tidal interaction is likely to be an effective mechanism for transforming spirals to S0s.  相似文献
