The preliminary results of paleomagnetic and radiocarbon dating of late pleistocene-holocene sediments from two lakes of south-western Argentina (41°S, 71.5°W) are presented. The magnetic susceptibility, intensity and direction of the natural remanent magnetisation were measured. The stability of the natural remanent magnetisation was investigated by alternating field demagnetisation. The magnetic parameters allowed the cores within each lake to be correlated. 13 C analysis, total organic content measurements and C 14 dating were carried out. A model of sedimentation is suggested. Using this model and the correlation, curves of variations of magnetic inclination and declination in time are shown.  相似文献

Summary The paleodeclination and paleoinclination logs compiled from the cores taken from Mara Lake show consistent, well defined oscillations. It was hoped that the Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Mazama tephra layers encountered in the cores would provide accurate, absolute dating control of the cores as well for the paleodeclination and paleoinclination logs. Unfortunately the dates of 3300 BP for the Mt. St. Helens tephra and 6845 ± 50 BP for the Mt. Mazama tephra are incompatible with a constant rate of sedimentation. It would appear that the Mt. Mazama date is valid and a redetermination of the Mt. St. Helens date based on the 6845 ± 50 BP date for the Mt. Mazama tephra and a constant rate of sedimentation from Mazama time to the present gives a date of 4100 BP for the Mt. St. Helens tephra. This dating control has been used to construct paleodeclination and paleoinclination logs versus time which correlate well with paleomagnetic logs from Fish Lake, Oregon and Shawnigan Lake on Vancouver Island.Presented at 2nd conference on New Trends in Geomagnetism, Castle Bechyn, Czechoslovakia, September 24–29, 1990.  相似文献

We present results of paleomagnetic and sedimentological studies carried out on three cores Lmor1, Lmo98-1, Lmor98-2 from bottom sediments of Lake Moreno (south-western Argentina), and integrate them with data from our previous studies. Measurements of directions (declination D and inclination I) and mass specific intensity of natural remanent magnetization (NRM intensity), magnetic susceptibility (specific, χ and volumetric, κ), isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM), saturation of isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM), and back field remanent coercivity (B0CR) were performed. The stability of the NRM was investigated using alternating-field demagnetization. The results show that these sediments meet the criteria required to construct a reliable paleomagnetic record. The cores were correlated very well based on magnetic parameters, such as χ and NRM intensity, as well as with lithological features. Tephra layers were identified from the lithological profiles and magnetic susceptibility logs. We obtained the D and I logs of the characteristic remanent magnetization for the cores as a function of shortened depth. The data from the three cores were combined to form a composite record using the Fisher method. A comparison between stacked inclination and declination records of Lake Moreno and those obtained in previous works on Lake Escondido and Lake El Trébol shows good agreement. This agreement made it possible to transform the stacked curves into time series spanning the interval 12–20 kyr. The results obtained improved our knowledge of SV and the behaviour of the geomagnetic field and also allowed us to determine the range of past inclination variations from −70° to −45° for the southern hemisphere, where data are scarce.  相似文献

Summary An integrated pilot paleomagnetic and sedimentological study has been conducted in the Neogene-Quaternary infilling materials of the Bajo Segura Basin (Eastern Betics, SE Spain). The studied sediments belong to the youngest (late Pliocene-Quaternary) lithostratigraphic unit of the basin (P-Q unit). The statistical analysis of tectonic striations and stylolitic dissolutions on the conglomerate limestone clasts indicates a NNW-SSE maximum compression direction. This is in accordance with the principal susceptibility axes, determined from the anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility measurements (AMS) of the interbedded siltstones where the Kmax axis group in a subhorizontal N 080° E direction.A total of 45 core samples have been collected from 16 stratigraphic siltstone levels encompassing the described section at Crevillente with the aim to establish a magnetochronology. Upwards in the section the NRM intensity and bulk susceptibility vary from 10–2 to 10–3 A/m and from 1550 to 100 × 10–6 SI, respectively. The mean characteristic remanent magnetization (ChRM) after bedding correction (Dec/Inc = 10°/60°, 95 = 8.7°, k = 15.9) is deviated slightly towards the E from the reference N direction, and could reflect a deflection related to the observed magnetic fabric although no clear correlation exists with AMS parameters. The derived magnetostratigraphy reveals only one reversal boundary within the upper third of the section, delimiting an upper reversal magnetozone which has been tentatively correlated with the Olduwai subchron close to the Plio-Pleistocene boundary.Pilot and preliminary rock-magnetic experiments and standard X-ray difraction (XRD) analysis have been performed on typical samples in order to establish the carriers of magnetization and characterize the sedimentological and magnetic-acquisition processes in these sediments. Magnetic carriers seem to be dominated by magnetite with a relative grain size within the PSD state (pseudo single-domain) threshold, but closer to the MD (multi domain) threshold, which favours the detrital origin for the magnetite.  相似文献

Summary Unfortunately most of the cores taken from Salisbury Channel, Lake Victoria which contained discrete pieces of wood suitable for14C dating were organic-rich and therefore showed a considerable scattering of the remanent magnetic direction plots resulting in poorly defined oscillations. However, the cores from Pilkington Bay as well as core C5 from Salisbury Channel, Lake Victoria and the cores from Lake Albert show well-defined paleodeclination and paleoinclination logs. Several cores from Pilkington Bay and Lake Albert with some14C control can be used to verify the isochronous correlation of the paleodeclination and paleoinclination oscillations. Core C5, from Salisbury Channel, Lake Victoria, which did not contain any discrete pieces of plant or shell material has been dated by correlation with other cores which had14C control. This core which shows the best-defined paleodeclination and paleoinclination logs of this study would appear to have bottomed in sediments in excess of 6000 years BP age and with the work of Maley et al. (1990) from the Cameroons provides a complete record of the Holocene for Central Africa.  相似文献

Three closely spaced 6-m piston cores were taken in the central part of Lake Tahoe. Cores were split into two complete replicates for paleomagnetic study and the remaining sections were used for stratigraphic and mineralogical analysis.Stratigraphic correlation of the cores is based on two distinctive horizons (volcanic ash and diatomite) and upon three different sedimentological regimes dominated by (1) poorly bedded silts and muds, (2) well bedded graded units, and (3) finely laminated silts. These correlations served as the standards for the evaluation of the paleomagnetic data. Extrapolation of14C dates obtained in the upper sections of the Lake Tahoe sediments suggests that the lower sections of the cores may reach ages of 25,000–30,000 years B.P.X-ray, optical, Curie point, and hysteresis measurements show that magnetite is the only important magnetic mineral in the sediments and occurs in the size range of 10 μm. Hematite is essentially absent. Based on large changes in the declination and inclination of the natural remanent magnetism (NRM) within single graded layers the paleomagnetic signature is a post-depositional remanent magnetism (PDRM). This PDRM is believed to be caused by magnetic orientation during compaction.Paleomagnetic measurements show three regimes that are correlated with the stratigraphic regimes. NRM declination and inclination data show good correlation between the three cores and agree well with the correlations based on sediment character. NRM intensity variations are due largely to the variations in magnetite content and its occurrence as either single detrital grains or as inclusions within the larger silicates. Thus the variation in paleo intensity was not determined.Comparisons of Lake Tahoe data with that from Mono Lake show fair correlations of declination and inclination. The occurrence of a short-wavelength, high-amplitude event in the lower section of the Lake Tahoe cores may provide confirmation of the Mono Lake geomagnetic excursion.  相似文献

Measurement of the remanent magnetization of a 6.88-m oriented core of soft sediments and tephras from Fargher Lake near Mount St. Helens in southwestern Washington State shows that no significant geomagnetic reversals were recorded in the sediments of the lake. Radiocarbon and palynological dating of the tephra layers from the lake bed indicates deposition during the interval 17, 000–34, 000 years B.P. although geochemical correlation of a prominent tephra layer in the core with tephra set C of Mount St. Helens could mean that the maximum age of the sediments may be at least 36, 000 years B.P. The core was divided into specimens 0.02 m long, each representing approximately 55 years of deposition assuming a constant rate of sedimentation. Pilot alternating field demagnetization studies of every tenth specimen indicated a strong, stable remanence with median destructive field of 15 mT, and the remaining specimens were subsequently demagnetized in fields of this strength. The mean inclination for all specimens exclusive of the unstably magnetized muck and peat from near the surface is 56.1° which is 8° shallower than the present axial dipole field at this site, perhaps because of inclination error in the detrital remanent magnetization of the sediments, although because of the variability in the data, this departure from the axial dipole field may not be significant. The ranges of inclination and declination are comparable to those of normal secular variation at northern latitudes. Although three isolated specimens have remanence with negative inclination, these anomalous directions are due to sampling and depositional effects. Measurement of a second core of 6.86 m length also revealed only normal magnetic polarity, but this result is of little stratigraphic value as this core failed to penetrate the distinctive tephra found near the base of the former core.Studies of a concentrate of the magnetic minerals in the sediments by optical microscopy and X-ray diffraction indicate that the primary magnetic constituent is an essentially pure magnetite of detrital origin. The magnetite occurs in a wide range of grain sizes with much of it of sub-multidomain size (< 15 μm).As a whole, this study provides substantial evidence against the existence of large-scale worldwide geomagnetic reversals during the time interval of Fargher Lake sedimentation, a segment of geological time for which many excursions and reversals have been reported elsewhere.  相似文献

Previous magnetic and geochemical studies of stream sediments in the Northeast of Buenos Aires Province, in the Greater La Plata area, have revealed a high level of trace elements, especially lead and zinc. Continuing these preliminary works, new sampling sites were considered in order to improve and increase the magnetic mapping of this area. This part of the study focuses especially on the magnetic properties of sediments from a cross-city stream. Such stream receives a variable pollutant load from urban, industrial and diffuse sources.Concentration-dependent magnetic parameters, magnetic carriers (para, anti and ferrimagnetic) and their features (e.g. softer or harder magnetic carrier, grain size distribution, etc.) have been calculated using magnetic measurements. According to magnetic parameters and heavy metal loads two main distinctive groups of sediment-cores are distinguished. The vertical distribution of sediments reveals a recent anthropogenic influence, possibly, belonging to the last 20-40 years.Four out of all the magnetic parameters (magnetic susceptibility, anhysteric remanent magnetisation, S-ratio and ARM/) were chosen in order to investigate their relationship with contents of heavy metals. In all the cases, good positive correlations were obtained using linear regression. However, more significant correlation factors were achieved for grain size and magnetic feature-dependent parameters ( ARM/ and S-ratio) than for magnetic concentration-dependent parameters. Therefore, the ARM/ and the S-ratio seem to be the most relevant magnetic parameters to describe the vertical and longitudinal distribution of heavy metals present in these stream sediments. The non-significant relationship between heavy metals and concentration-dependent parameters could be explained taking into account the discrimination of the two distinctive groups. The group belonging to the Coastal Plain shows a clear linear trend between heavy metals and magnetic susceptibility and anhysteric remanent magnetisation.  相似文献

Palaeomagnetic and oxygen isotope studies on samples taken from five cores in the Mediterranean area are described. Directions of the stable remanent magnetisation show the presence of an anomalous (reversed) zone during the transition between the oxygen isotope substages 5e and 5d. This position corresponds to the age of about 117 kyr B.P. and thus to the Blake polarity episode. The duration of this episode is estimated to be about 6000 years. The study of the anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility shows no indication of sedimentological disturbances in recorded sections. The Blake episode therefore represents a stratigraphic marker which may be used to link the continental and marine palaeoclimatic and sedimentary records.  相似文献

Laguna Melincué is a shallow lake located in Santa Fe Province, Argentina (33°41′27.8″S, 61°31′36.5″W). The catchment area is around 1495 km2 and it is located in the Pampean Plains. It was reduced to 678 km2 by the construction of the San Urbano channel in 1941 and reconditioned in 1977, which was built to avoid floods. The floods are related to some El Niño episodes, with high precipitation events. The lake has been previously studied from different approaches, mainly to understand hydrological and climatic variations, but more multidisciplinary studies are needed to understand its complex hydrological situation. Here we present the first paleomagnetic and rock magnetic studies made on a short sediment core collected from the lake in order to contribute to identifying paleoclimatic proxies and to present the first paleomagnetic results for the site. Rock magnetic analyses suggest that the well-preserved magnetic mineralogy is dominated by pseudo single-domain (titano)magnetite and/or maghemite. The results also indicate that a stable characteristic remanent magnetisation can be isolated and thus the directions of the geomagnetic field may be obtained, providing evidence for the use of this lake for paleomagnetic and paleoenvironmental studies. Changes in magnetic grain size and concentration of magnetic minerals suggest environmental variations and changes in the lake level, which are consistent with historical reports. The paleomagnetic results agree well with Cals3k.3 model for inclination and declination of the geomagnetic field except for the dry period probably due to the fact that the core was extracted near the shore.  相似文献

Based on a multi-proxy investigation into the deep core of the Cuoe Lake in the middle of Tibetan Plateau, a 2.8 Ma paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental evolution is reconstructed. The result of magnetic stratum indicates that the lake basin was formed at about 2.8 MaBP, while the multi-proxy analyses of lithology, grain size, magnetic susceptibility and geochemical elements reveal that there have been three major environmental evolution stages and at least two intensive uplifts of the Tibetan Plateau in the lake basin area, i.e. during 2.8-2.5 MaBP, the lake basin came into being as a result of the disaggregation of the planation surface and rapid rising of the Tibetan Plateau. During 2.5-0.8 MaBP, with gradual uplift of the Tibetan Plateau, the environment of this area was more effectively controlled by the climatic cycle of the alternative glacial-interglacial stages. After 0.8 MaBP, the middle part of the Plateau accelerated its uplift and entered cryoshere.  相似文献

Gega lake, in southeastern Tibet, was formed by the blocking of Yarlung Tsangpo gorge by a glacier and is a well-known example of geomorphological damming. However, the evolution of the damming process at the site is still not understood in detail. Here, we use measurements of multiple magnetic parameters of the sediments from the Yusong (YS) 3 section, which is well-dated by optically stimulated luminescence, to provide a detailed history of the late stage of Gega dammed lake since 17.0 ka. Low-frequency field magnetic susceptibility (χlf) increases upwards gradually from 25 to 79?×?10?8 m3/kg above 5.5 m, but other magnetic properties, such as frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility (χfd % and χfd), susceptibility of anhysteretic remanent magnetization (χARM), and saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM) did not show a similar degree of enhancement. The magnetic grain size indicators of χARM/χlf, χARM/SIRM, and χlf/SIRM all indicate a trend of increasing magnetic grain size from the 5.5 m to the top of section; however, the bulk sediment grain size decreases gradually within the same interval. The total organic carbon is very low (0.2–0.7%), and thus, it is unlikely that the sedimentary environment is sufficiently strongly reducing to lead to the dissolution of magnetic minerals. Therefore, we infer that the coarsening-upwards of the magnetic grain size, and the increasing magnetic susceptibility from 5.5 m, reflect the gradual preferential preservation of magnetic minerals, caused by the deepening of the lake. Thus, we interpret the magnetic record of the section as reflecting the gradual deepening of the late stage of Gega ice-dammed lake. Last, the abrupt disappearance of the lake may have resulted in an outburst flood.  相似文献

Diagenetic effects on the magnetic mineralogy in marine sediments have long been investigated, including oxidation/reduction reactions, magnetic dilution, formation of iron sulfides and oxides, magnetization acquisition mechanisms and reliability of the paleomagnetic record. This study investigates diagenetic effects in low-oxygen depositional environments characterized by recent and past magnetic mineral dissolution zones. We analyze a marine sequence from the Alfonso Basin in the southern Gulf of California in which the topmost sediments show diagenetic effects marked by high magnetic enhancement factors. The susceptibility logs show high values at the top sediments with well-defined small amplitude low frequency fluctuations down core. Magnetic hysteresis loops indicate low coercivity saturation, characteristic of magnetites and low-tititanomagnetites with varying paramagnetic contributions. Intensity of natural remanent, isothermal and anhysteretic magnetizations and coercivity parameters show similar variation patterns with depth. The anhysteretic remanence intensity-susceptibility ratio shows an inverse correlation to magnetic susceptibility, indicating varying concentration of fine grained single domain and superparamagnetic particles. The magnetic logs record diagenetic changes and magnetite authigenesis, with preserved recent and old dissolution zones marked by enriched single-domain/pseudo-singledomain/multi-domain magnetite in between the dissolution fronts. The oxidation/reduction processes relate to climatic and water/sediment interface factors controlling the dissolution processes, which occur in the Alfonso Basin anoxic conditions.  相似文献

The palaeomagnetic and rock magnetic characteristics of some Cenozoic rocks from the Cairo–Fayum area have been investigated. A total number of 259 oriented core samples were collected at 32 sites located in rocks of Eocene (13 sites), Oligocene (11 sites) and Pliocene (9 sites) ages. Most of these rocks carry a weak but stable remanent magnetisation that is principally carried by hematite. Goethite and magnetite are also found in some samples as subordinate constituents. Careful thermal demagnetisation successfully enabled the isolation of the characteristic remanent magnetisation. Normal and reversed polarities that passed a reversal test have been recorded in the three age groups. This magnetisation is probably of primary origin and reflects the ages of the rocks. The resultant palaeomagnetic poles are considered reliable and represent a good contribution to the African palaeomagnetic database and should help in further refining of the Cenozoic APWP for Africa.  相似文献

In this work we have assessed the hybrid algorithm of NeuroFuzzy logic (NFL), to establish a correlation between global climatic changes (benthic foraminiferal δ18O data), experimental S-ratio (factor characterizing stability of remanent magnetization) and magnetic susceptibility (κ). Magnetic proxies have been measured in 44 samples of the Colombian stratigraphic well Saltarín 1A (distal Llanos foreland basin). κ and Sratios were linked to global δ18O data assuming a constant accumulation rate for a 305 meters thick stratigraphic interval flanked by the two palynological age constrains available. This interval encompasses, from top to base, the bottom of the Guayabo formation, the León, and the upper unit of the Carbonera formations (lower to middle Miocene). The best inference is accomplished applying a Takagi-Sugeno-Kan (TSK) fuzzy model with four fuzzy rules and the δ18O, S-ratios and κ data used in a linear form to train the system. These results are interpreted as the outcome of a significant influence of global climatic changes upon magnetic proxies. A stronger correlation is perhaps prevented by the likely influence of local and regional tectonic events and climatic changes that could have affected the distal segment of the Colombian Llanos foreland basin during Miocene times. We argue that late diagenesis of primary magnetic minerals and the assumption of a constant accumulation rate might have a minor influence on these results.  相似文献

晚更新世以来以一系列地磁漂移事件是区域地层对比和确定沉积物年代框架的重要工具.但是在海相沉积物中,识别这些地磁漂移事件多依赖相对磁场强度(RPI)的变化,在地磁方向异常方面鲜有报到,从而影响对这些事件可靠性的讨论.本文选择南海南部巽他陆架附近重力活塞钻孔BKAS2PC的沉积物,进行系统的岩石磁学和古地磁研究,获得该钻孔沉积记录的RPI和磁倾角变化信息.岩石磁学及扫描电镜结果表明沉积物的原生主要载磁矿物为单畴(SD)和假单畴(PSD)钛磁铁矿.在一些层位,沉积后发生的还原作用形成胶黄铁矿等铁硫化物.磁性矿物的浓度和粒度等参数呈现显著的两阶段变化特征,上部(约220 cm以上)含量低而粒度细,下部含量高但粒度相对较粗,整体上均在一个数量级范围内波动.样品的交变退磁特征显示当交变场超过60 mT时,受胶黄铁矿影响产生旋转磁化,剩磁强度反而上升.因此,在20~60 mT之间确定原生特征剩磁,并把RPI定义为NRM_((20-40)mT)/ARM_((20-40)mT).通过~(14)C限定,并与其他有良好年代控制的相对磁场强度曲线进行对比,建立了钻孔的年代框架.结果显示,钻孔沉积物记录了几次显著的地磁漂移事件,这为联合应用RPI与磁场方向异常构建海相沉积物年代学框架提供了新的依据.  相似文献
