Volcano monitoring in NZ and links to SW Pacific via the Wellington VAAC   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Monitoring for natural hazards like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and landslides in New Zealand is under taken by GNS Science through the GeoNet project, funded by the Earthquake Commission (EQC). The volcano monitoring function, which includes seismograph and GPS networks, visual observations, webcams, deformation, gas and chemical measurements, assesses the status of New Zealand’s 12 active volcanoes and disseminates warnings as necessary. Interaction with the Wellington VAAC addresses aviation concerns. Near-real-time data is obtained from the monitoring networks and processed via two data centres, with two Duty Officers who respond to pager alerts. Through the National Civil Defence Plan, the volcano monitoring function is delegated to GNS Science, which is responsible for setting the volcanic alert level at each volcano. The Alert level is then used by responding agencies, industries, utility providers and the public to set their response. The New Zealand alert level system is based on the current status of the volcano, and is not necessarily predictive. The aviation industry is one of these responding industries. As a consequence of the 1995 and 1996 eruptions of Ruapehu volcano, it became apparent that the aviation industry required more information than the standard VAAC data and an additional service known as VAAS (NZ Volcanic Ash Advisory System) was established by MetService NZ and GNS Science. This arrangement provides enhanced services to the airlines and ensures rapid dissemination and quantification of information like SIGMET and NOTAM. GNS Science has informal relationships with similar geological based organisations in SW Pacific countries, especially Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands, and is able to quantify information about eruptions in those countries. Similarly, MetService NZ has relationships and is able to obtain pilot reports and updates from the meteorological and air traffic control organisations.  相似文献

The distribution and possible evolutionary history of two major lineages of Micropterigidae in Australia, New Caledonia and New Zealand are presented. In Australia a simple vicariant evolutionary model is applied to the data and it is noted that the development of micropterigids is paralleled by the evolutionary history of eastern Australian rainforests. In New Zealand there appear to be distinct patterns of evolution in the different micropterigid lineages, a situation which is interpreted in terms of separate evolutionary histories, possibly on different land masses. In New Caledonia a species swarm exists which is also interpreted in terms of a former more complex geography. It is concluded that micropterigid evolution in the SW Pacific supports the idea of a composite origin for both New Zealand and New Caledonia.

This article analyzes the basic structure of aviation in the Middle East and the development possibilities as a result of Israeli-Palestinian cooperation consequent to the peace process. This paper is a first attempt at estimating the advantages and disadvantages of such cooperation to the Israeli and Palestinian economies. In addition, the research leads to an initial formulation of how to maximize the benefits for both parties.Israeli-Palestinian cooperation offers more than objective economic advantages; such cooperation can also form a functional base for a political-policy framework. In economic terms, both sides can benefit from economies of scale and more efficient utilization of the existing facilities, thus avoiding the waste of valuable resources in establishing two sets of aviation facilities. However these economic criteria are not the only advantage of cooperation. In fact, critical operational and security requirements exist as well, both in terms of passenger security and safety, where air traffic control requiring coordination in a limited airways system. Furthermore, trends in the air travel market point to future bilateral agreements on the basis of blocs of nations and not individual countries. Therefore, Isreali-Palestinian cooperation would enable Israel to maintain the existing framework of favorable bilateral agreement with Europa and the United States.Cooperation of this kind is viable both economically and politically, as it avoids political conflicts by providing infrastructure on an equal basis to the Palestinians, either by lease or purchase of Israeli facilities. The primary advantage of joint ownership is that the Palestinians will save the development and construction costs of new infrastructure, while Israel can both develop the existing infrastructure and free funds for economic development. At the same it is possible to take advantage of economies of scale in order to reap the economic benefits of this process.  相似文献

New fossils of dinosaurs and pterosaurs have been found in the conglomeratic facies of the Maungataniwha Member of the Tahora Formation (Campanian) of New Zealand. These derive from a large theropod, a sauropod, an ankylosaur and a pterosaur. Together with previously described material they indicate at least five, maybe seven, taxa from the Late Cretaceous terrestrial fauna of New Zealand. At that time New Zealand was an island near Antarctica, so this represents an insular, polar fauna.We assume a vicariance model for the origin of this fauna, which probably samples that present in Antarctica at the time New Zealand rifted away from it. The fauna differs from other well known Cretaceous Gondwana faunas in including an ankylosaur, but is similar to that from the Late Early Cretaceous of Queensland, Australia. The inclusion of both an ankylosaur and sauropod lend a relict, Early Cretaceous aspect to the fauna. There seems to be no particular similarity to known polar faunas from the Early Cretaceous of Victoria, Australia, or the Late Cretaceous of Alaska and Antarctica.Dinosaurs, both large and small, were capable of surviving in the cool to cold-temperate, seasonal climate of New Zealand at this time.  相似文献

Research has established that many socially deprived, low income and ethnic minority communities are exposed to disproportionately high levels of outdoor air pollution. Whilst there is a burgeoning literature documenting these environmental disparities, most previous studies have taken place in North America and few researchers have examined local scale variations across an entire country. Further, there has been little work systematically evaluating disparities in the local exposure to air pollution from different sources. In this New Zealand research we use mean annual estimates of outdoor particulate air pollution for different sources for neighbourhoods across urban New Zealand to evaluate whether air pollution varies between local areas of differing socioeconomic circumstances. We find that outdoor pollution levels are higher in socially deprived areas (using a neighbourhood measure of disadvantage) and neighbourhoods with a high proportion of low income households. However, although ethnicity was also related to mean total pollution, levels were elevated in areas where the proportion European was higher and other ethnic groups (including Māori) were lower. We also find that the disparities in pollution levels are specific to the pollution source. The results are discussed in the context of the policy framework in New Zealand, including the tensions fashioned by the Resource Management Act 1991, which have effectively ‘desocialised’ environmental concerns. We argue that the regulatory framework is fixated on ‘environmental bottom lines’ rather than social concerns that are integral to the environmental justice framework. Some priorities for future research into environmental justice in New Zealand are also considered.  相似文献

In the Cambrian, the paleo-Pacific margin of the East Gondwana continent, including East Antarctica, Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand, was affected by the Ross–Delamerian Orogeny. The evidence from geochemistry of volcanic rocks and petrography of clastic sediments in northern Victoria Land (Antarctica) reveals that orogenesis occurred during a phase of oblique subduction accompanied by the opening and subsequent closure of a back-arc basin. A similar sequence of events is recognized in New Zealand. In both regions Middle Cambrian volcanic rocks are interpreted as arc/back-arc assemblages produced by west-directed subduction; sediments interbedded with the volcanic rocks show provenance both from the arc and from the Gondwana margin and therefore place the basin close to the continent. Rapid back-arc closure in the Late Cambrian was likely accomplished through changes to the subduction system.  相似文献

Rockfalls and debris avalanches triggered by earthquakes during the 2010–2011 Canterbury earthquake sequence killed five people and caused an estimated US$400 million in damages. In total, about 200 dwellings were directly impacted by some of the ~6000 rockfalls and debris avalanches that occurred across the Port Hills of Christchurch. This research presents the results of the analysis of a high-quality database of 61 individual rockfall impacts on 29 dwellings in the Port Hills of Christchurch, New Zealand. Dwellings in the Port Hills are typically simple timber-frame structures with wooden or unreinforced masonry cladding, comparable to most dwellings across New Zealand, North America, Australia, and elsewhere. Rockfall impacts on dwellings in this study were observed to follow a power law relationship between kinetic energy and (1) the runout distance into and through the dwelling and (2) the impacted area within the dwelling. The results have been quantified and are presented as a damage proportion, which is defined as the proportion of the area affected by an individual rock block inside the dwelling divided by the total area of the dwelling. These data provide a fundamental input for rockfall risk analysis and will allow the losses from rockfall impacts to be better constrained.  相似文献

Faunistic movements of bony fishes are investigated during the Tertiary of the Australian/New Zealandian region and are interpreted in respect to the disconnection of Australia and Antarctica and the initiation and development of the circumantarctic current. In early Eocene the New Zealandian fauna (tethyal origin) is principally different from the South Australian one (? southern Atlantic origin). In uppermost Eocene a break through of the Tasman Passage allows a first invasion of New Zealandian sublittoral fishes into the Great Australian Bight. Since Middle Oligocene these New Zealandian/ Indopacific sublittoral elements almost completely replace the original South Australian fauna and initiate an endemic evolution in this area. Faunistic exchange of deep sea fishes can be observed with some time delay since at least Middle Oligocene following the eastwards directed circumantarctic current. At the same time we realize a first invasion of mesopelagic fishes of northern Atlantic affinities to New Zealand. Simultaneously, a climax is evident for the development of the endemic sublittoral New Zealandian fauna. All these facts, mainly observed in south-east New Zealand, lead to the postulation of a colder current side branching from the circumantarctic current and running northwards along the south-eastern coast of New Zealand. The evolution of the relatively uniform Southern Ocean meso- and bathypelagic fauna is discussed as a function of the developement of the southern temperate climatic zone and the initiation of the circumantarctic current. Faunistic elements of these affinities are recognizeable since at least Lower Miocene. A number of selected ichthyological data, recent and fossil, are presented on biogeographic maps.  相似文献

Deposition of hydrous allophane from groundwater discharging from a bore drilled in a saline seep has been observed at Yalanbee, near Bakers Hill, in Western Australia. Similar allophane forms a part of the cementing agent of an extensive hardpan developed within a near surface horizon of a lateritic pallid zone, derived from granitic rocks. Currently allophane is being precipitated where acid highly saline and CO2-saturated groundwater contained in this pallid zone is discharged at a surface seepage which is persistent throughout the year. As CO2 is released, the resultant increase in pH allows dissolved aluminum and silica to combine and precipitate as an allophane. Both the mechanism of precipitation, and the precipitate itself are very similar to that reported at Silica Springs in New Zealand; however, the New Zealand materials are deposited in a stream bed from highly carbonated waters of volcanic origin, a condition quite different from the Yalanbee situation.  相似文献

This study forms part of a wider investigation of late Quaternary environments in the Southern Hemisphere. We here review the terrestrial and near-shore proxy data from Australia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea (PNG), New Zealand and surrounding oceans during 35–10 ka, an interval spanning the lead-up to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM), the LGM proper (21 ± 2 ka), and the ensuing deglaciation. Sites selected for detailed discussion have a continuous or near continuous sedimentary record for this time interval, a stratigraphically consistent chronology, and one or more sources of proxy climatic data. Tropical Australia, Indonesia and PNG had LGM mean annual temperatures 3–7 °C below present values and summer precipitation reduced by at least 30%, consistent with a weaker summer monsoon and a northward displacement of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. The summer monsoon was re-established in northwest Australia by 14 ka. Precipitation in northeast Australia was reduced to less than 50% of present values until warmer and wetter conditions resumed at 17–16 ka, followed by a second warmer, wetter phase at 15–14 ka. LGM temperatures were up to 8 °C lower than today in mainland southeast Australia and up to 4 °C cooler in Tasmania. Winter rainfall was much reduced throughout much of southern Australia although periodic extreme flood events are evident in the fluvial record. Glacial advances in southeast Australia are dated to 32 ± 2.5, 19.1 ± 1.6 and 16.8 ± 1.4 ka, with periglacial activity concentrated towards 23–16 ka. Deglaciation was rapid in the Snowy Mountains, which were ice-free by 15.8 ka. Minimum effective precipitation in southern Australia was from 14 to 12 ka. In New Zealand the glacial advances date to ~28, 21.5 and 19 ka, with the onset of major cooling at ~28 ka, or well before the LGM. There is no convincing evidence for a Younger Dryas cooling event in or around New Zealand, but there are signs of the Antarctic Cold Reversal in and around New Zealand and off southern Australia. There remain unresolved discrepancies between the climates inferred from pollen and those inferred from the beetle and chironomid fauna at a number of New Zealand sites. One explanation may be that pollen provides a generalised regional climatic signal in contrast to the finer local resolution offered by beetles and chironomids. Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) were up to 5 °C cooler during the LGM with rapid warming after 20 ka to attain present values by 15 ka. The increase in summer monsoonal precipitation at or before 15 ka reflects higher insolation, warmer SSTs and steeper thermal gradients between land and sea. The postglacial increase in winter rainfall in southern Australia is probably related to the southward displacement of the westerlies as SSTs around Antarctica became warmer and the winter pack ice and Antarctic Convergence Zone retreated to the south.  相似文献

New U–Pb detrital zircon ages from Triassic metasandstones of the Torlesse Terrane in New Zealand are compared with 40Ar/39Ar muscovite data and together, reveal four main source components: (i) major, Triassic–Permian (210–270 Myr old) and (ii) minor, Permian–Carboniferous (280–350 Myr old) granitoids (recorded in zircon and muscovite data); (iii) minor, early middle Palaeozoic, metamorphic rocks, recorded mainly by muscovite, 420–460 Myr old, and (iv) minor, Late Precambrian–Cambrian igneous and metamorphic complexes, 480–570 Myr old, recorded by zircon only. There are also Proterozoic zircon ages with no clear grouping (580–1270 Myr). The relative absence of late Palaeozoic (350–420 Myr old) components excludes granitoid terranes in the southern Lachlan Fold Belt (Australia) and its continuation into North Victoria Land (East Antarctica) and Marie Byrd Land (West Antarctica) as a potential source for the Torlesse. The age data are compatible with derivation from granitoid terranes of the northern New England Orogen (and hinterland) in NE Australia. This confirms that the Torlesse Terrane of New Zealand is a suspect terrane, that probably originated at the NE Australian, Permian–Triassic, Gondwanaland margin and then (200–120 Ma) moved 2500 km southwards to its present New Zealand position by the Late Cretaceous (90 Ma). This sense of movement is analogous to that suggested for Palaeozoic Mesozoic terranes at the North American Pacific margin.  相似文献

The Takaka Terrane in New Zealand is one of the best exposed arc fragments of the early Paleozoic Australian-Antarctic convergent margin and constitutes one of the most outboard terranes of this margin in paleogeographic reconstructions. Pb-Nd isotope compositions of clinopyroxenes from the Cambrian Devil River Volcanics of the Takaka Terrane enable identification of the location of the terrane in the Paleo-Pacific Ocean. The Devil River Volcanics, a suite of primitive arc and back-arc rocks, are interbedded with the partly continent-derived Haupiri Group sediments. Extremely radiogenic Pb and unradiogenic Nd compositions in the arc rocks cannot be explained by assimilation of the Haupiri Group sediments or a continental basement of such a composition. Pb isotope compositions of the Takaka Terrane sediments are much less radiogenic and overlap with crustal compositions of the Lachlan Fold Belt in Australia, suggesting that both units are derived from one source, the Australian-Antarctic Pacific margin. Pb-Nd isotope compositions in the Devil River Volcanics reflect contamination of their mantle sources by subducted sediments derived from Archean provinces in either Antarctica or Laurentia. Both provinces show characteristically high 207Pb/204Pb500 and were located at the Pacific rim in the Cambrian. Mixing between mantle and Proterozoic continental material from present western South America or eastern Laurentia cannot explain the high 207Pb/204Pb500 in the New Zealand rocks. As in New Zealand, extreme spreads in Pb-Nd isotope compositions in other Cambrian volcano-sedimentary sequences in southeast Australia and Tasmania can be explained by the same model, suggesting that all these fragments originated along the Australian-Antarctic Gondwana margin. Pb isotope compositions of arc rocks, therefore, provide a new tool for terrane analysis in the early Paleozoic Pacific ocean.  相似文献

New Zealand is a fragment of Gondwana that, before Late Cretaceous sea floor spreading, was contiguous with Australia and Antarctica. Only about 10% of the area of continental crust in the wider New Zealand region (Zealandia) is emergent above sea level as the North and South Islands. No Precambrian cratonic core is exposed in onland New Zealand. The Cambrian to Early Cretaceous basement can be described in terms of nine major volcano-sedimentary terranes, three composite regional batholiths, and three regional metamorphic-tectonic belts that overprint the terranes and batholiths.The terranes (from west to east) are: Buller, Takaka, Brook Street, Murihiku, Maitai, Caples, Bay of Islands (part of former Waipapa), Rakaia (older Torlesse) and Pahau (younger Torlesse). The western terranes are intruded by three composite batholith (>100 km2) sized belts of plutons: Karamea-Paparoa, Hohonu and Median, as well as by numerous smaller plutons. Median Batholith (including the Median Tectonic Zone) is a recently-recognised Cordilleran batholith that represents the site of subduction-related magmatism from ca. 375–110 Ma. Parts of the terranes and batholiths are variably metamorphosed and deformed: Devonian and Cretaceous amphibolite-granulite facies gneisses are present in Buller, Takaka, Median and Karamea-Paparoa units; Jurassic-Cretaceous subgreenschist-amphibolite facies Haast Schist overprints the Caples, Bay of Islands and Rakaia Terranes; Cretaceous subgreenschist facies Esk Head and Whakatane Mélanges bound the Pahau Terrane. In the South Island, small areas (<5 km2 total) of Devonian, Permian, Triassic and Jurassic Gondwana sequences have been identified. In the North Island a widespread Late Jurassic overlap sequence, Waipa Supergroup (part of former Waipapa Terrane), has recently been proposed.  相似文献

The carbon-13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of fossil resins from New Zealand and Australia have been compared with those of modern and semifossilized materials. The great majority of the fossilized samples have strong spectral similarities to modern Agathis resins and to North American fossil resins, which have been attributed to Agathis. The Agathis-related spectra are different from those of modern Hymenaea and Araucaria. A small subgroup of Late Cretaceous resins from Australia and Papua New Guinea appears to derive from a different botanical source and shows strong resemblances to Claiborne amber from Arkansas. The spectral resonances of the exomethylene carbons degrade over time and on average provide an approximate measure of the geological age of Agathis-related fossil resins. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

During the Permian the Bowen Basin, a foreland basin in eastern Australia, was influenced by cold to cool-temperate climatic conditions at a paleolatitude of 60 °S. Limestones are rare in the sequence except in the southeastern Bowin Basin area where two limestone-bearing sequences are present. The limestones are mainly skeletal grainstones and rarer packstones; skeletal grains include crinoids, bryozoans, brachiopods, molluscs, ahermatypic corals, foraminifera and sponge spicules. Crinoid remains are dominant, but brachiopod-rich and coral-rich limestones are present locally. Non-skeletal carbonate grains are absent from the limestones. Terrigenous components range from negligible to dominant. Comparison of the limestones with others in the Permian sequences in eastern Australia reveals a consistency in sedimentary style, the only variations being in the relative proportions of the skeletal fragments. The Permian limestones share similar characteristics with temperate Cenozoic limestones of New Zealand, suggesting that differences in carbonate sedimentation between tropical and non-tropical regions have been consistent through time and reflect real sedimentological differences.  相似文献

以产自新西兰的碧玉样品作为研究对象,采用常规的宝石学测试、傅里叶变换红外光谱仪、环境扫描电子显微镜、等离子体质谱仪、X射线粉晶衍射仪,对其表面微观形貌、矿物组成、化学成分特征进行了较全面的研究。研究表明,新西兰碧玉的显微结构致密程度不高,矿物结晶颗粒粗细不一,局部具有定向性,其主要的矿物组成为角闪石,内含黑色的铬铁矿杂质。将新西兰碧玉的化学成分特征与新疆一带所产的碧玉相比较,主量元素和微量元素的含量均有所差别。  相似文献

云作为地球大气系统的重要组成部分,不仅影响着气候变化和天气系统的发展演变,还与航空活动密切相关,一直以来是空军和民航部门非常关注的气象要素之一。在云探测、资料同化和反演方法发展的基础上,从实际业务保障和数值模式发展需求出发,综述国内外云分析、预报方法和云分析预报系统开发的研究成果,分析各类方法的优势和不足,明确国内外研究的主要差距,并探讨国内未来研究的方向。云分析方法中,探空对云廓线识别较好,卫星可见光和红外资料在云顶信息反演方面优势明显,多普勒雷达能够获取对流层中层和底层的云信息,而毫米波雷达能够很好地反映云三维结构信息,发展潜力巨大。云预报方法中,传统的统计和诊断方法发展较为成熟,而考虑了大气温湿和云微物理状况的大气辐射传输模式正演模拟云顶亮温的方法是未来的发展趋势。加强云探测技术,综合利用云分析预报方法,借鉴国外先进云分析预报系统的设计理念,积极开发我国自主的云分析预报系统,推动天气预报、航空气象保障和数值预报模式的发展将会是我国云研究的重要方面。  相似文献

Landsliding in New Zealand most commonly occurs in the form of multiple-occurrence landslide events, simultaneously involving thousands to ten thousands of landslides over areas extending up to 20,000 km2. The scale of these events, together with their multiple-hazard character, provide a unique set of management issues that stretch the capabilities of available emergency management services. Several measures for characterising the magnitude and impact potential of these events are presented and compared. While the median density of landsliding is approximately 30 landslides/km2, over 100 landslides/km2 have been recorded in some events. Specific soil displacement volumes vary widely between events—New Zealand events yield a median value of approximately 140 m3/ha. Measured Ratios of runout length to scar length are commonly about 3:1. However, comparison between events is constrained by lack of standardisation in methods of measurement and recording. Agricultural production loss, damage to road and rail infrastructure and increased flooding are the main consequences of these events. Treatment options involve loss sharing, resource management legislation, and various forms of bio-engineering.  相似文献

Detrital zircon U–Pb LAM-ICPMS age patterns for sandstones from the mid-Permian –Triassic part (Rakaia Terrane) of the accretionary wedge forming the Torlesse Composite Terrane in Otago, New Zealand, and from the early Permian Nambucca Block of the New England Orogen, eastern Australia, constrain the development of the early Gondwana margin. In Otago, the Triassic Torlesse samples have a major (64%), younger group of Permian–Early Triassic age components at ca 280, 255 and 240 Ma, and a minor (30%) older age group with a Precambrian–early Paleozoic range (ca 1000, 600 and 500 Ma). In Permian sandstones nearby, the younger, Late Permian age components are diminished (30%) with respect to the older Precambrian–early Paleozoic age group, which now also contains major (50%) and unusual Carboniferous age components at ca 350–330 Ma. Sandstones from the Nambucca Block, an early Permian extensional basin in the southern New England Orogen, follow the Torlesse pattern: the youngest. Early Permian age components are minor (<20%) and the overall age patterns are dominated (40%) by Carboniferous age components (ca 350–320 Ma). These latter zircons are inherited from either the adjacent Devonian–Carboniferous accretionary wedge (e.g. Texas-Woolomin and Coffs Harbour Blocks) or the forearc basin (Tamworth Belt) farther to the west, in which volcaniclastic-dominated sandstone units have very similar pre-Permian (principally Carboniferous) age components. This gradual variation in age patterns from Devonian–late Carboniferous time in Australia to Late Permian–mid-Cretaceous time in New Zealand suggests an evolutionary model for the Eastern Gondwanaland plate margin and the repositioning of its subduction zone. (1) A Devonian to Carboniferous accretionary wedge in the New England Orogen developing at a (present-day) Queensland position until late in the Carboniferous. (2) Early Permian outboard repositioning of the primary, magmatic arc allowing formation of extensional basins throughout the New England Orogen. (3) Early to mid-Permian translocation of the accretionary wedge and more inboard active-margin elements, southwards to their present position. This was accompanied by oroclinal bending which allowed the initiation of a new, late Permian to Early Triassic accretionary wedge (eventually the Torlesse Composite Terrane of New Zealand) in an offshore Queensland position.
