We present a search for the near-infrared spectroscopic signature of the close orbiting extrasolar giant planet HD 75289b. We obtained ∼230 spectra in the wavelength range 2.18–2.19 μm using the Phoenix spectrograph at Gemini South. By considering the direct spectrum, derived from irradiated model atmospheres, we search for the absorption profile signature present in the combined star and planet light. Since the planetary spectrum is separated from the stellar spectrum at most phases, we apply a phase-dependent orbital model and tomographic techniques to search for absorption signatures.
Because the absorption signature lies buried in the noise of a single exposure we apply a multiline deconvolution to the spectral lines available in order to boost the effective signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of the data. The wavelength coverage of 80 Å is expected to contain ∼100 planetary lines, enabling a mean line with S/N of 800 to be achieved after deconvolution. We are nevertheless unable to detect the presence of the planet in the data and carry out further simulations to show that broader wavelength coverage should enable a planet like HD 75289b to be detected with 99.9 per cent confidence. We investigate the sensitivity of our method and estimate detection tolerances for mismatches between observed and model planetary atmospheres.  相似文献

The variation of the specific intensity across the stellar disc is an essential input parameter in surface brightness reconstruction techniques such as Doppler imaging, where the relative intensity contributions of different surface elements are important in detecting star-spots. We use phoenix and atlas model atmospheres to model light curves derived from high precision (signal-to-noise ratio ≃ 5000) Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ) data of the eclipsing binary SV Cam (F9V+K4V), where the variation of specific intensity across the stellar disc will determine the contact points of the binary system light curve. For the first time, we use χ2 comparison fits to the first derivative profiles to determine the best-fitting model atmosphere. We show the wavelength dependence of the limb darkening and that the first derivative profile is sensitive to the limb-darkening profile very close to the limb of the primary star. It is concluded that there is only a marginal difference (<1σ) between the χ2 comparison fits of the two model atmospheres to the HST light curve at all wavelengths. The usefulness of the second derivative of the light curve for measuring the sharpness of the primary's limb is investigated, but we find that the data are too noisy to permit a quantitative analysis.  相似文献

We present time-resolved, J ‐band (1.025–1.340 μm) infrared spectra of the short-period dwarf novae (DNe) WZ Sge and VY Aqr, and single spectra of the short-period DN EF Peg and the nova-like variable PX And. There is some evidence in the spectra of VY Aqr and EF Peg that we have detected the secondary star, both in the continuum slope and also through the possible presence of spectral features. The spectra of WZ Sge and PX And, on the other hand, show no evidence for the secondary star, with upper limits for its contribution to the J ‐band light of 10 and 20 per cent respectively. The spectral type of the secondary in WZ Sge is constrained to be later than M7.5V. Using skew mapping, we have been able to derive a value for the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the secondary star in VY Aqr of K R =320±70 km s−1, which in conjunction with K W from Thorstensen & Taylor gives a mass ratio of q =0.15±0.04.  相似文献

A variety of physical processes leading to different types of pulsations and chemical compositions are observed between A- and F-type stars. To investigate the underlying mechanisms responsible for these processes in stars with similar locations in the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram, an accurate abundance determination is needed, among others. Here, we describe a semi-automatic procedure developed to determine chemical abundances of various elements ranging from helium to mercury for this type of stars. We test our procedure on synthetic spectra, demonstrating that our procedure provides abundances consistent with the input values, even when the stellar parameters are offset by reasonable observational errors. For a fast-rotating star such as Vega, our analysis is consistent with those carried out with other plane-parallel model atmospheres. Simulations show that the offsets from the input abundances increase for stars with low inclination angle of about  4°  . For this inclination angle, we also show that the distribution of the iron abundance found in different regions is bimodal. Furthermore, the effect of rapid rotation can be seen in the peculiar behaviour of the Hβ line.  相似文献

Models of brown dwarf atmospheres suggest they exhibit complex physical behaviour. Observations have shown that they are indeed dynamic, displaying small photometric variations over time-scales of hours. Here, I report results of infrared (0.95–1.64 μm) spectrophotometric monitoring of four field L and T dwarfs spanning time-scales of 0.1–5.5 h, the goal being to learn more about the physical nature of this variability. Spectra are analysed differentially with respect to a simultaneously observed reference source in order to remove Earth-atmospheric variations. The variability amplitude detected is typically 2–10 per cent, depending on the source and wavelength. I analyse the data for correlated variations between spectral indices. This approach is more robust than single band or  χ2  analyses, because it does not assume an amplitude for the (often uncertain) noise level (although the significance test still assumes a shape for the noise power spectrum). Three of the four targets show significant evidence for correlated variability. Some of this can be associated with specific features including Fe, FeH, VO and K  i , and there is good evidence for intrinsic variability in H2O and possibly also CH4. Yet some of this variability covers a broader spectral range which would be consistent with dust opacity variations. The underlying common cause is plausibly localized temperature or composition fluctuations caused by convection. Looking at the high signal-to-noise ratio stacked spectra, we see many previously identified spectral features of L and T dwarfs, such as K  i , Na  i , FeH, H2O and CH4. In particular, we may have detected methane absorption at 1.3–1.4 μm in the L5 dwarf SDSS 0539−0059.  相似文献

In the present paper the abundance anomalies of mercury and its isotopes in the atmospheres of HgMn stars have been studied. Observations have shown strongly anomalous isotopic composition of Hg, Pt, Tl and He in the atmospheres of such CP stars. Generation of elemental abundance anomalies in quiescent atmospheres of CP stars can generally be explained by the mechanism of diffusive segregation of elements due to oppositely directed gravitational and radiative forces. It has been shown that the formation of the observed isotopic anomalies can be successfully explained by a diffusion mechanism called the light‐induced drift (LID). The observed ratios of isotopes also enable to estimate the evolutionary stages of CP stars.  相似文献

The sequence of SEDs computed for a gridof model atmospheres with 4000 < Teff < 7000, 0 < logg < 1 provides a unique possibility to analyze the temporalchanges of physical parameters of V 4334 Sgr and related objectsin the framework of a self-consistent approach.  相似文献

RX J1856.5−3754 is one of the brightest nearby isolated neutron stars (INSs), and considerable observational resources have been devoted to it. However, current models are unable to satisfactorily explain the data. We show that our latest models of a thin, magnetic, partially ionized hydrogen atmosphere on top of a condensed surface can fit the entire spectrum, from X-rays to optical, of RX J1856.5−3754, within the uncertainties. In our simplest model, the best-fitting parameters are an interstellar column density   N H≈ 1 × 1020 cm−2  and an emitting area with   R ≈ 17 km  (assuming a distance to RX J1856.5−3754 of 140 pc), temperature   T ≈ 4.3 × 105 K  , gravitational redshift   z g ∼ 0.22  , atmospheric hydrogen column   y H≈ 1 g cm−2  , and magnetic field   B ≈ (3–4) × 1012 G  ; the values for the temperature and magnetic field indicate an effective average over the surface. We also calculate a more realistic model, which accounts for magnetic field and temperature variations over the NS surface as well as general relativistic effects, to determine pulsations; we find that there exist viewing geometries that produce pulsations near the currently observed limits. The origin of the thin atmospheres required to fit the data is an important question, and we briefly discuss mechanisms for producing these atmospheres. Our model thus represents the most self-consistent picture to date for explaining all the observations of RX J1856.5−3754.  相似文献

The presence of heavy elements in the atmospheres of the hottest H-rich DA white dwarfs has been the subject of considerable interest. While theoretical calculations can demonstrate that radiative forces, counteracting the effects of gravitational settling, can explain the detections of individual species, the predicted abundances do not accord well with observation. However, accurate abundance measurements can only be based on a thorough understanding of the physical structure of the white dwarf photospheres, which has proved elusive. Recently, the availability of new non-local thermodynamic equilibrium model atmospheres with improved atomic data has allowed self-consistent analysis of the extreme ultraviolet (EUV), far UV and optical spectra of the prototypical object G191-B2B. Even so, the predicted and observed stellar fluxes remain in serious disagreement at the shortest wavelengths (below ≈190 Å), while the inferred abundances remain largely unaltered. We show here that the complete spectrum of G191-B2B can be explained by a model atmosphere where Fe is stratified, with increasing abundance at greater depth. This abundance profile may explain the difficulties in matching observed photospheric abundances, usually obtained by analyses using homogeneous model atmospheres, to the detailed radiative levitation predictions, particularly as the latter are only strictly valid for regions deeper than where the EUV/far UV lines and continua are formed. Furthermore, the relative depletion of Fe in the outer layers of the atmosphere may be evidence for radiatively driven mass-loss in G191-B2B.  相似文献

The frequency of the sixth mode observed in HR 1217 cannot currently be understood in the light of the asymptotic theory for high-frequency acoustic modes, valid for adiabatic pulsations in spherically symmetric stars. Deviations from spherical symmetry will change the frequency of the observed oscillations away from the frequencies predicted by the asymptotic theory. Among other things, the presence of a magnetic field in the star will introduce such deviations from spherical symmetry. In the present work we inspect the effect of the magnetic field on the oscillations of HR 1217. Although we model HR 1217 in a rather simplified manner, we believe, as argued in the text, that the essence of the conclusions would not be modified if a more sophisticated model were to be used instead. The results show that the frequency of the sixth mode observed in HR 1217 might be understood if the effect of the magnetic field on the frequencies of the oscillations is fully taken into account. Moreover, we interpret the sixth frequency as a mode of even degree, and explain the absence from the observations of an intermediate l =1 , m =0 mode as the result of large energy losses associated with the coupling of the latter with Alfvénic waves, in the strongly magnetized outer layers of the star. Finally, we show how, in the light of this explanation, the frequency of the sixth mode might be used in order to put constraints on the parameters characterizing the star.  相似文献

In this study, we show that only models with differential rotation, as opposed to non-rotation or solid-body rotation for the components of PV Cas, are in satisfactory agreement with the observations (including constraints on the apsidal advance rate and the synchronous rotation of the components in addition to their luminosities and radii). Internal rotation profiles found for solar and metal-rich chemical compositions are similar to each other in that only a small part of the outermost regions is rotating very slowly  ( v eq∼ 65 km s −1)  and the rest is rotating very rapidly. Confirmation of Ap-like variations in the light curve of the system leads us to search for a connection between this type (and similar types) of internal rotation and chemically peculiar stars. The temperature difference between the blue sides of the main sequence for the normal and for the magnetic Ap stars may arise from such a connection, since we find a similar difference between the models with this kind of rotation and the non-rotating models of somewhat lower mass.  相似文献

We report the direct detection of cyclic diameter variations in the Mira variable χ Cygni. Interferometric observations made between 1997 July and 1999 September, using the Cambridge Optical Aperture Synthesis Telescope (COAST) and the William Herschel Telescope (WHT), indicate periodic changes in the apparent angular diameter at a wavelength of 905 nm, with amplitude 45 per cent of the smallest value. The star appears largest at minimum light. Measurements made at a wavelength of 1.3 μm over the same period suggest much smaller size changes. This behaviour is consistent with a model in which most of the apparent diameter variation at 905 nm is caused by a large increase in the opacity of the outer atmospheric layers (which is mostly owing to titanium oxide) near minimum light, rather than by physical motions of the photosphere. The 1.3-μm waveband is relatively uncontaminated by TiO, and so much smaller size changes would be expected in this band. The latest non-linear pulsational models predict maximum physical size close to maximum light, and increases in opacity near minimum light that are too small to reproduce the diameter variation seen at 905 nm. This suggests either that the phase-dependence of the model pulsation is incorrect, or that the opacities in the models are underestimated. Future interferometric monitoring in uncontaminated near-infrared wavebands should resolve this question.  相似文献

In this study, we present a photometric study of AM Her, a prototype of a class of magnetic CVs. Optical photometry of AM Her was obtained using the Russian–Turkish 1.5 m telescope at TüBİTAK National Observatory (TUG) in August 2003. The R band light curve of the system shows two maxima and two minima during one orbital cycle. In both observing nights the star showed flickering at a significant level. The measured flickering time scale is about 5 min.  相似文献

Using improved techniques, high-quality CCD uvbyVI photometry has been obtained for the eclipsing binary HV 982 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). International Ultraviolet Explorer ultraviolet spectrophotometry was also obtained. These data have been analysed using the Wilson–Devinney synthetic light-curve code and Kurucz low-metallicity model atmospheres as well as the EBOP code. The system is detached and the orbit is eccentric. Apsidal motion is detected with apsidal period 205 ± 7 yr. The effective temperatures of the components are found via flux fitting to be T eff,1 = 28 000 ± 5000 K and T eff,2 = 27 200 ± 5000 K. The large errors result from uncertainties over the appropriate interstellar extinction correction. The system plausibly comprises two ∼ 8 M stars of radius 6–7 R separated by ∼ 30 R. For pedagogical and historical interest, the near simultaneity of the eclipse minima at different wavelengths is used to constrain the constancy of the speed of light with wavelength and the mass of the photon, yielding m γ < 10−41 kg. Because of the great distance to HV 982, this limit is some 102 times smaller than previously achieved with eclipse timings, but it is nevertheless 10 orders of magnitude less stringent than that which is provided by satellite measurements of planetary magnetic fields.  相似文献

We investigate the long-term optical–infrared variability of SV Cep and explain it in the context of an existing UX Ori (UXOR) model. A 25-month monitoring programme was completed with the Infrared Space Observatory in the 3.3–100 μm wavelength range. Following a careful data reduction, the infrared light curves were correlated with the variations of SV Cep in the V band. A remarkable correlation was found between the optical and the far-infrared light curves. In the mid-infrared regime, the amplitude of variations is lower, with a hint for a weak anti-correlation with the optical changes. In order to interpret the observations, we modelled the spectral energy distribution of SV Cep assuming a self-shadowed disc with a puffed-up inner rim, using a two-dimensional radiative transfer code. We found that modifying the height of the inner rim, the wavelength dependence of the long-term optical–infrared variations is well reproduced, except the mid-infrared domain. The origin of variation of the rim height might be fluctuation in the accretion rate in the outer disc. In order to model the mid-infrared behaviour, we tested adding an optically thin envelope to the system, but this model failed to explain the far-infrared variability. Infrared variability is a powerful tool to discriminate between models of the circumstellar environment. The proposed mechanism of variable rim height may not be restricted to UXOR stars, but might be a general characteristic of intermediate-mass young stars.  相似文献

We have used time-resolved spectroscopy to measure the colour dependence of pulsation amplitudes in the DAV white dwarf G29-38. Model atmospheres predict that mode amplitudes should change with wavelength in a manner that depends on the spherical harmonic degree ℓ of the mode. This dependence arises from the convolution of mode geometry with wavelength-dependent limb darkening. Our analysis of the six largest normal modes detected in Keck observations of G29-38 reveals one mode with a colour dependence different from the other five, permitting us to identify the ℓ-value of all six modes and to test the model predictions. The Keck observations also show pulsation amplitudes that are unexpectedly asymmetric within absorption lines. We show that these asymmetries arise from surface motions associated with the non-radial pulsations (which are discussed in detail in a companion paper). By incorporating surface velocity fields into line profile calculations, we are able to produce models that more closely resemble the observations.  相似文献

We undertook a time-series photometric multisite campaign for the rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) star HD 99563 and also acquired mean light observations over four seasons. The pulsations of the star, which show flatter light maxima than minima, can be described with a frequency quintuplet centred on 1557.653 μHz and some first harmonics of it. The amplitude of the pulsation is modulated with the rotation period of the star that we determine with 2.91179 ± 0.00007 d from the analysis of the stellar pulsation spectrum and of the mean light data. We break up the distorted oscillation mode into its pure spherical harmonic components and find it is dominated by the ℓ= 1 pulsation, and also has a notable ℓ= 3 contribution, with weak ℓ= 0 and 2 components. The geometrical configuration of the star allows us to see both pulsation poles for about the same amount of time; HD 99563 is only the fourth roAp star for which both pulsation poles are seen and only the third where the distortion of the pulsation modes has been modelled. We point out that HD 99563 is very similar to the well-studied roAp star HR 3831. Finally, we note that the visual companion of HD 99563 is located in the δ Scuti instability strip and may thus show pulsation. We show that if the companion was physical, the roAp star would be a 2.03-M, object, seen at a rotational inclination of 44°, which then predicts a magnetic obliquity     .  相似文献

The angular diameter of a star can be estimated from interferometric observations by fitting the data with the visibility function for a uniformly illuminated disc and then using published correction factors to convert the uniform-disc angular diameter to the limb-darkened angular diameter. The correction factors are strictly valid only for monochromatic light. We investigate the effect of using a broad bandwidth, and present a simple method for calculating broad-band correction factors from the monochromatic factors.
The technique of fitting the data with a uniform-disc visibility function is only useful for stars with compact atmospheres and 'typical' limb-darkening profiles. It should not be applied to stars with extended atmospheres or that show extreme limb darkening. These stars have visibility functions that are qualitatively different from a uniform-disc visibility function, so they can be distinguished observationally from compact-atmosphere stars.  相似文献

We report the detection, from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) data, of phosphorus in the atmospheres of GD71 and two similar DA white dwarfs. This is the first detection of a trace metal in the photosphere of the spectrophotometric standard star GD71. Collectively, these objects represent the coolest DA white dwarfs in which photospheric phosphorus has been observed. We use a grid of homogeneous non-local thermodynamic equilibrium synthetic spectra to measure abundances of  [P/H]=−8.57+0.09−0.13, −8.70+0.23−0.37  and  −8.36+0.14−0.19  in GD71, RE J1918+595 and RE J0605−482 respectively. At the observed level we find that phosphorus has no significant impact on the overall energy distribution of GD71. We explore possible mechanisms responsible for the presence of this element in these stars, concluding that the most likely is an interplay between radiative levitation and gravitational settling, possibly modified by weak mass loss.  相似文献

Recent Chandra and XMM–Newton observations of a number of X-ray 'dim' pulsating neutron stars have revealed quite unexpected features in the emission from these sources. Their soft thermal spectrum, believed to originate directly from the star surface, shows evidence for a phase-varying absorption line at some hundred eVs. The pulse modulation is relatively large (pulsed fractions in the range ∼12–35 per cent), the pulse shape is often non-sinusoidal, and the hard X-ray colour appears to be anticorrelated in phase with the total emission. Moreover, the prototype of this class, RX J0720.4−3125, has been found to undergo rather sensible changes in both its spectral and timing properties over a time-scale of a few years. All these new findings seem difficult to reconcile with the standard picture of a cooling neutron star endowed with a purely dipolar magnetic field, at least if surface emission is produced in an atmosphere on top of the crust. In this paper we explore how a dipolar+quadrupolar star-centred field influences the properties of the observed light curves. The phase-resolved spectrum has been evaluated accounting for both radiative transfer in a magnetized atmosphere and general relativistic ray-bending. We computed over 78 000 light curves, varying the quadrupolar components and the viewing geometry. A comparison of the data with our model indicates that higher-order multipoles are required to reproduce the observations.  相似文献
