We used slit spectra from the 18 November 1997 flight of Goddard Space Flight Center's Solar EUV Rocket Telescope and Spectrograph (SERTS-97) to measure relative wavelength shifts of coronal emission lines as a function of position across NOAA active region 8108. The shifts are measured relative to reference wavelengths derived from spectra of the region's nearby quiet surroundings (not necessarily at rest) because laboratory rest wavelengths for the coronal EUV lines have not been measured to sufficient accuracy for this work. An additional benefit to this approach is that any systematic uncertainties in the wavelength measurements are eliminated from the relative shifts by subtraction. We find statistically significant wavelength shifts between the spatially resolved active region slit spectra and the reference spectrum. For He ii 303.78 Å the maximum measured relative red shift corresponds to a Doppler velocity +13 km s–1, and the maximum relative blue shift corresponds to a Doppler velocity –3 km s–1. For Si x 347.40 Å, Si xi 303.32 Å, Fe xiv 334.17 Å, and Fe xvi 335.40 Å the corresponding maximum relative Doppler velocities are +19 and –14, +23 and –7, +10 and –10, and +13 and –5 km s–1, respectively. The active region appears to be divided into two different flow areas; hot coronal lines are predominantly red-shifted in the northern half and either blue-shifted or nearly un-shifted in the southern half. This may be evidence that material flows up from the southern part of the region, and down into the northern part. Qualitatively similar relative wavelength shifts and flow patterns are obtained with SOHO/CDS spectra.  相似文献

The relevant data for the known 147 pulsars are presented in graphical and tabular forms. Various data correlations are discussed, and a detailed analysis of pulsar dispersion measures and distances is given. The range of the electron densities in the diffuse interstellar medium is found to be 0.01 cm–3n e0.1 cm–3, and n e0.03 cm–3. The dispersion scale height for pulsars is found to be 5.9±0.7 pc cm–3 implying a linear scale height of 200 pc, which is much smaller than the electron scale height of our Galaxy.Astrophysics and Space Science Review Paper.  相似文献

Observations of a coronal disturbance on 1973 January 11 commencing at 18h01m UT are described. The event is homologous with an earlier disturbance from the same region of the corona. The observations suggest that a cloud of coronal gas containing 4 × 1039 electrons propagated outwards to 5 R behind a piston-driven shock wave travelling at a velocity of 800 to 1200 km s–1.On leave from Division of Radiophysics, CSIRO, Sydney, Australia.  相似文献

Dense molecular clouds within the Taurus and NGC 2264 regions have undergone gravitational collapse and fragmentation to form groups of low mass (1M ) T-Tauri stars which are still embedded within the clouds and which are kinematically associated with them. Molecular column densities on the order of 1014 cm–2 are inferred from the emission lines of OH and NH3. Emission line widths are 2 km s–1 and the antenna beamwidths include linear extents of order 0.1 pc. The OH emission appears to be in a condition of local thermodynamic equilibrium, and it cannot arise from circumstellar sheils similar to those surrounding the masing infrared stars. The OH and NH3 emission occurs in clouds of 1 pc in extent with optical depths of 0.1 to 1.0 and excitation temperatures of the order of 10 K. The molecular clouds have radii of 0.5 pc, molecular hydrogen densities of 4000 cm–3, masses of 100 solar masses, and kinetic temperatures of 20 K. Multiple moving magnetic structures in the solar corona   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We report the study of moving magnetic structures inferred from the observations of a moving type IV event with multiple sources. The ejection contains at least two moving radio emitting loops with different relative inclinations. The radio loops are located above multiple H flare loops in an active region near the limb. We investigate the relationship between the two systems of loops. The spatial, temporal and geometrical associations between the radio emission and near surface activities suggest a scenario similar to coronal mass ejection (CME) events, although no CME observations exist for the present event. From the observed characteristics, we find that the radio emission can be interpreted as Razin suppressed optically thin gyrosynchrotron emission from nonthermal particles of energy 100, keV and density 102–105 cm–3 in a magnetic field 2 G.  相似文献

We consider the formation of cometlike and larger bodies in the trans-Neptunian region of the protoplanetary gas–dust disk. Once the particles have reached 1–10 cm in size through mutual collisions, they compact and concentrate toward the midplane of the disk to form a dust subdisk there. We show that after the subdisk has reached a critical density, its inner, equatorial layer that, in contrast to the two subsurface layers, contains no shear turbulence can be gravitationally unstable. The layer breaks up into 1012-cm clumps whose small fragments (109 cm) can rapidly contract to form bodies 10 km in size. We consider the sunward drift of dust particles at a velocity that decreases with decreasing radial distance as the mechanism of radial contraction and compaction of the layer that contributes to its gravitational instability and the formation of larger (100 km) planetesimals. Given all of the above processes, it takes 106 yr for planetesimals to form, which is an order of magnitude shorter than the lifetime of the gas–dust protoplanetary disk. Charged dust grains of radiia3×10–63×10–5 cm may acquire relativistic energy (>1018 eV) in the intergalactic medium. In order to attain relativistic energy, dust grains have to move in and out (scattering) of the magnetic field of the medium. A relativistic grain of radiusa10–5 cm with Lorentz factor 103 approaching the Earth will break up either due to electrostatic charge or due to sputtering about 150100 km, and may scatter solar photons via a fluorescence process. Dust grains may also melt into droplets in the solar vicinity and may contribute towards observed gamma-ray bursts.  相似文献

Variations of the UV continuum have been analyzed. The observed UV continuum may be reproduced by a superposition of a Kurucz model atmosphere (log g=2), Teff8500–15000 K) and optically thin hydrogen bound-free and free-free emission (Te 1000 K). The temperature of the Kurucz atmosphere is the lowest at the maximum of brightness. The cooling effect of emission in the spectral lines, which dominates over continuous emission in the chromosphere and becomes important first around the temperature minimum, modifies greatly the radiative relaxation timet r in the solar atmosphere. This rises from low photospheric values to a maximum of 8 min just aboveT min, falls in the low chromosphere to 1.5 min because of line emission, but rises again to 6 min atT 7000–8400 K in the chromosphere where hydrogen ionization increases the specific heat.  相似文献

A highly anisotropic packet of solar electron intensities was observed on 6 April 1971 with a sensitive electrostatic analyzer array on the Earth-orbiting satellite IMP-6. The anisotropies of intensities at electron energies of several keV were factors 10 favoring the expected direction of the interplanetary magnetic lines of force from the Sun. The directional, differential intensities of solar electrons were determined over the energy range 1–40 keV and peak intensities were 102 cm–2 s–1 sr–1 eV–1 at 2–6 keV. This anisotropic packet of solar electrons was detected at the sattelite for a period of 4200 s and was soon followed by isotropic intensities for a relatively prolonged period. This impulsive emission was associated with the onsets of an optical flare, soft X-ray emission and a radio noise storm at centimeter wavelengths on the western limb of the Sun. Simultaneous measurements of a type III radio noise burst at kilometric wavelengths with a plasma wave instrument on the same satellite showed that the onsets for detectable noise levels ranged from 500 s at 178 kHz to 2700 s at 31.1 kHz. The corresponding drift rate requires a speed of 0.15c for the exciting particles if the emission is at the electron plasma frequency. The corresponding electron energy of 6 keV is in excellent agreement with the above direct observations of the anisotropic electron packet. Further supporting evidence that several-keV solar electrons in the anisotropic packet are associated with the emission of type III radio noise beyond 50R is provided by their time-of-arrival at Earth and the relative durations of the radio noise and the solar electron packet. Electron intensities at E 45 keV and the isotropic intensities of lower-energy solar electrons are relatively uncorrelated with the measurements of type III radio noise at these low frequencies. The purpose of this paper is to propose an interpretation for the line spectrum of NGC 55, whose most remarkable feature is the absence of the generally noticeable 6584[Nii]. From the physical conditions of the ionized gas responsible of the observed emission, we infer that the N(N)/N(O) abundance ratio is significantly smaller than usual, probably reflecting a nitrogen underabundance in a medium of temperatures 9100 K and densities 500 cm–3.  相似文献

An analysis of the longitudinal distribution of gamma rays from SAS-II data has been carried out using the available information on the gas distribution in the Galaxy. The overall distribution of cosmic rays in the galactic plane can be represented by an exponential function in galactocentric distance with a scale length of 8 kpc upto the solar circle and 10 kpc beyond. There is no evidence for a large gradient of the cosmic ray intensity in the outer parts of the Galaxy. The local emissivities of gamma rays in the energy regionsE >100 MeV and 35 MeV<E <100 MeV are (1.73±0.27)×10–25 photon/(cm3 s nH) and (2.40±0.41)×10–25 photon/(cm3 s nH) respectively. The contribution of °-decay gamma rays is 80% forE >100 MeV and 20% at lower energies. The electron spectrum required by this analysis has a power law spectral index of about –2.7 below a few hundred MeV. The observed gas distribution towards the galactic centre would predict a gamma-ray flux larger than observed. It is suggested that the molecular gas in the central region may be in the form of dense coudlets, in which low evergy cosmic rays do not penetrate; in this case the centre should be seen as a strong source only at high energies. An analysis of the radio sky survey map of the Galaxy at 408 MHz shows thatB varies with a scale-length of 40 kpc; no significance can be attached to the apparent deviation from the equipartition of energy densities between cosmic rays and magnetic field. The derived local emissivity is (1.46±0.28)×10–40 W/((m3 Hz), which corresponds toB 5 G. The surface brightness of radio and gamma-ray emissions in the Galaxy decreases from the centre with scale-lengths 6 kpc and 7 kpc respectively. No positive correlation can be noticed with either co-rotation radius or pattern speed, when compared with external spiral galaxies.  相似文献

Time sequences of simultaneous spectra of limb spicules, obtained using the Sacramento Peak Observatory's tower telescope and echelle spectrograph are analyzed. Intensity determinations of H and K, H, 8498 and 8542 of calcium are tabulated for three observing heights. Electron densities averaged over the entire visible lifetimes of spicules are -6 × 1010 cm–3 at observing heights of 6000km, while maximum and minimum values were -1.1 × 1011 cm–3 at 6000km and - 2 × 1010 cm–3 at 10000km. Electron temperatures range between 12 000 K and 16 000 K. Profile halfwidths indicate turbulent velocities of 12 to 22 km s–1, and spectral tilts are interpreted as caused by differential velocity fields of -3 km s–1 per 1000 km. No large scale spicule expansions or contractions are observed, although possible expulsions or accretions of material are observed. Motion of the gas in supergranular convection will produce twisted flux tubes. A simple energy calculation shows that for a wide variety of assumptions a tube of field strength 100 G will be given about one twist and will have a diameter 1000–2000 km. Recent calculations of electron and proton impact excitation rates in Nevii are used to calculate theoretical emission line ratios involving both n=0 (2–2) and n=1 (2–3) transitions in the 97–895 Å wavelength range. A comparison of these with existing solar observations, obtained by instruments on rocket flights and on the Skylab mission, reveals generally good agreement between theory and observation. This provides experimental support for the accuracy of the atomic data adopted in the line ratio calculations, and implies that the latter may be applied with confidence to the analysis of solar and stellar spectra from current and future satellite missions.  相似文献

Spherically symmetric, steady-state, optically thick accretion onto a nonrotating black hole with the mass of is studied. The gas accreting onto the black hole is assumed to be a fully ionized hydrogen plasma withn 0=108 cm–3 andT 0=104 K far from the black hole, and a new approximate expression for the Eddington factor is introduced. The luminosity is estimated to beL=1.875×1033 erg s–1, which primarily arises from the optical surface (1) ofT104 K. The accretion flow is characterized by 1 and (v/c)10. In the optically thin region, the flow remains isothermal, and the increase of temperature occurs at 1. The radiative equilibrium is strictly realized at (v/c)10.  相似文献

On the basis of empirical (D)-dependency at the frequency of 5 GHz constructed using 15 planetary nebulae with the independently measured distances (10–171×10–20 W m–2 Hz–1 ster–1), we evaluated distances of 335 objects. Independent evidence of the correctness of the accepted scale are given. Then(D)-dependency is constructed and it is shown that atD<0.08 pc the mean electron density is higher than the one determined by the Seaton method. We showed that the filling factor diminishes with the increase of the PN diameter (1 atD0.08 pc and 0.2 atD0.4 pc). the ionized mass of 33 PNs is determined. With the diameter increase the ionized mass grows and atD0.4 pc reaches the valueM0.07M . We used the new distance scale when investigating the space distribution of PNs. The mean scale height =130±15 pc and the mean gradient of the change of surface densitym=0.37, which allowed us to estimate the total number of nebulae in the GalaxyN4×104. We divided the PNs according to their velocities (withV LSR>35 km s–1 andV LSR<35 km s–1) and permitted us to confirm that the PN belong to different sub-systems of the Galaxy. The estimated local formation rate of PNs [=(4.6±2.2)×10–12 pc–3 yr–1] is a little higher than the one of the white dwarfs. That can be explained by a large number of PNs having binary cores, which used in our sample. The statistical estimation of PN expansion velocity showed thatV ex increases from 5–7 km s–1 (atD0.03 pc) to 40–50 km s–1 (atD0.8 pc).  相似文献

We present near infrared maps of the planetary nebula IC 418 taken at 5 arc sec spatial resolution. These show an extremely compact source structure at 1.65 m, and very much broader and more elliptical emission distributions at 2.2 and 3.6 m. The possibility that the near infrared continuum derives from small grains with low thermal capacity is discussed, and synthetic spectra are derived. These indicate a very much slower variation of flux with wavelength than would be deduced for grains at unitary temperature, and imply a near infrared continuum which is significantly cooler than maximum grain temperatures. Fits to the spectrum of IC 418 suggest that peak grain temperatures may approachT p0103 K (for –2), for instance, compared to the observed colour temperature of 650 K.Finally, the relevant grains are required to be refractory and, given the large C/O ratio in this nebula, probably consist of graphite. Their mass is also required to be small, and is probably of order 2×10–7 M . This compares with the probable total mass for large dust grains of 10–4 M . Although they are both small and warm, such grains would be expected to persist over the lifetime of the nebula, and may also be responsible for various NIR band emission features.  相似文献

High spatial and spectral resolution observations of the ring nebula surrounding the LBV candidate He 3-519 are presented. The data were obtained at the AAT with the UCL echelle spectrograph and cover the H and [N II] emission lines for two slit positions. The nebular motions are clearly resolved and have a total velocity spread of -40 to +100 km s–1. The shell shows some deviations from spherical symmetry but overall is expanding at 61 km s–1 and has an ionized mass of 2 M. The nebular parameters are found to be similar to those of the AG Car nebula, suggesting that it resulted from a bulk ejection of material 2 × 104 yr ago.  相似文献

We present the two-dimensional imaging observations of radio bursts in the frequency range 25–50 MHz made with the Clark Lake multifrequency radioheliograph during a coronal mass ejection event (CME) observed on 1984, June 27 by the SMM Coronagraph/Polarimeter and Mauna Loa K-coronameter. The event was spatially and temporally associated with precursors in the form of meter-decameter type III bursts, soft X-ray emission and a H flare spray. The observed type IV emission in association with the CME (and the H spray) could be interpreted as gyrosynchrotron emission from a plasmoid containing a magnetic field of 2.5 G and nonthermal electrons with a number density of 105 cm–3 and energy 350 keV.On leave from Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Kodaikanal, India.  相似文献
