We present calculations of the reflection of the cosmic X-ray background (CXB) by the Earth's atmosphere in the 1–1000 keV energy range. The calculations include Compton scattering and X-ray fluorescent emission and are based on a realistic chemical composition of the atmosphere. Such calculations are relevant for CXB studies using the Earth as an obscuring screen (as was recently done by INTEGRAL ). The Earth's reflectivity is further compared with that of the Sun and the Moon – the two other objects in the Solar system subtending a large solid angle on the sky, as needed for CXB studies.  相似文献

We will report on the equipment and performance of the X-ray facility of the University of Ferrara. Initially developed to test the PDS (Phoswich Detection System) instrument aboard the BeppoSAX satellite and to perform reflectivity measurements of mosaic crystal samples of HOPG (Highly Oriented Pyrolytic Graphite), with time the facility has been improved and its applications extended. Now these applications include test and calibration of hard X-ray (> 10 keV) detectors, reflectivity measurements of hard X-ray mirrors, reflectivity tests of crystals and X-ray transparency measurements. The facility is being further improved in order to determine the optical axis mosaic crystals in Laue configuration within a project devoted to develop a hard X-ray (> 60 keV) focusing optics (Pisa, A. et al.: in press, Feasibility study of a Laue lens for hard X-rays for space astronomy, SPIE Proc., 5536).  相似文献

We analyze uncertainties in the cosmic X-ray background measurements performed by the INTEGRAL observatory. We find that the most important effect limiting the accuracy of the measurements is related to the intrinsic background variation in detectors. Taking into account all of the uncertainties arising during the measurements we conclude that the X-ray background intensity obtained in the INTEGRAL observations is compatible with the historic X-ray background observations performed by the HEAO-1 satellite.  相似文献

The Large Observatory For X-ray Timing (LOFT) is one of the candidate missions selected by the European Space Agency for an initial assessment phase in the Cosmic Vision programme. It is proposed for the M3 launch slot and has broad scientific goals related to fast timing of astrophysical X-ray sources. LOFT will carry the Large Area Detector (LAD), as one of the two core science instruments, necessary to achieve the challenging objectives of the project. LAD is a collimated detector working in the energy range 2-50 keV with an effective area of approximately 10 m 2at 8 keV. The instrument comprises an array of modules located on deployable panels. Lead-glass microchannel plate (MCP) collimators are located in front of the large-area Silicon Drift Detectors (SDD) to reduce the background contamination from off-axis resolved point sources and from the diffuse X-ray background. The inner walls of the microchannel plate pores reflect grazing incidence X-ray photons with a probability that depends on energy. In this paper, we present a study performed with an ad-hoc simulator of the effects of this capillary reflectivity on the overall instrument performance. The reflectivity is derived from a limited set of laboratory measurements, used to constrain the model. The measurements were taken using a prototype collimator whose thickness is similar to that adopted in the current baseline design proposed for the LAD. We find that the experimentally measured level of reflectivity of the pore inner walls enhances the off-axis transmission at low energies, producing an almost flat-top response. The resulting background increase due to the diffuse cosmic X-ray emission and sources within the field of view does not degrade the instrument sensitivity.  相似文献

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) is a broadband X-ray (1250 keV) astronomical satellite. Its core payload, the High Energy X-ray Telescope (hereafter HE), is operated in the hard X-ray energy range (20250 keV) and dedicated to the hard X-ray high-sensitivity survey observation, hard X-ray sky mapping and high-sensitivity focused observations towards particular celestial bodies. In order to achieve a high sensitivity, it is important to reduce effectively the background that is caused by the interactions between the detector and space particles (γ-ray, protons, electrons, neutrons). Combining a series of references about the near-earth space background with the up-to-date observational data, this paper presents a set of self-consistent data and energy spectrum formulae of near-earth space particles for the convenience of applications. In addition, by the simulative calculations with the software Geant 4, the background of HXMT and its variations with the time and orbit are also given.  相似文献

I use ASCA data to investigate the 2–10 keV X-ray emission of active galactic nuclei (AGN) taken from the ROSAT International X-ray Optical Survey (RIXOS). I find that the integrated spectrum of these faint, soft X-ray-selected AGN in the 2–10 keV band is harder (best-fitting α = 0.8 ± 0.1) than the slope measured with ROSAT between 0.1 and 2 keV, but softer than the 2–10 keV X-ray background, and consistent with the average 2–10 keV spectrum of bright, nearby Seyfert galaxies. With this spectral slope and using measurements of the AGN contribution to the 1–2 keV X-ray background, I estimate that the AGN percentage contribution to the 2–10 keV background is 0.60 +0.19−0.14 times the AGN percentage contribution to the 1–2 keV background. Hence AGN produce between 12 and 32 per cent of the 2–10 keV X-ray background. This is only the contribution from the types of AGN which are found in soft X-ray surveys; a population of absorbed AGN could represent an additional component of the 2–10 keV X-ray background.  相似文献

We have used a deep Chandra observation of the central regions of the twin-jet Fanaroff–Riley class I (FRI) radio galaxy 3C 31 to resolve the thermal X-ray emission in the central few kpc of the host galaxy, NGC 383, where the jets are thought to be decelerating rapidly. This allows us to make high-precision measurements of the density, temperature and pressure distributions in this region, and to show that the X-ray emitting gas in the centre of the galaxy has a cooling time of only  5×107 yr  . In a companion paper, these measurements are used to place constraints on models of the jet dynamics.
A previously unknown one-sided X-ray jet in 3C 31, extending up to 8 arcsec from the nucleus, is detected and resolved. Its structure and steep X-ray spectrum are similar to those of X-ray jets known in other FRI sources, and we attribute the radiation to synchrotron emission from a high-energy population of electrons. In situ particle acceleration is required in the region of the jet where bulk deceleration is taking place.
We also present X-ray spectra and luminosities of the galaxies in the Arp 331 chain of which NGC 383 is a member. The spectrum and spatial properties of the nearby bright X-ray source 1E 0104+3153 are used to argue that the soft X-ray emission is mostly due to a foreground group of galaxies rather than to the background broad absorption-line quasar.  相似文献

The well-known twice-averaged Hill problem is considered by taking into account the oblateness of the central body. This problem has several integrable cases that have been studied qualitatively by many scientists, beginning with M.L. Lidov and Y. Kozai. However, no rigorous analytical solution can be obtained in these cases due to the complexity of the integrals. This paper is devoted to studying the case where the equatorial plane of the central body coincides with the plane of its orbital motion relative to the perturbing body, while the satellite itself moves in a polar orbit. A more detailed qualitative study is performed, and an approximate constructive-analytical solution of the evolution system in the form of explicit time dependences of the eccentricity and pericenter argument of the satellite orbit is proposed. The methodical accuracy for the polar orbits of lunar satellites has been estimated by comparison with the numerical solution of the system.  相似文献

We present precise measurements of the X-ray gas mass fraction for a sample of luminous, relatively relaxed clusters of galaxies observed with the Chandra observatory, for which independent confirmation of the mass results is available from gravitational lensing studies. Parametrizing the total (luminous plus dark matter) mass profiles using the model of Navarro, Frenk & White, we show that the X-ray gas mass fractions in the clusters asymptote towards an approximately constant value at a radius r 2500, where the mean interior density is 2500 times the critical density of the Universe at the redshifts of the clusters. Combining the Chandra results on the X-ray gas mass fraction and its apparent redshift dependence with recent measurements of the mean baryonic matter density in the Universe and the Hubble constant determined from the Hubble Key Project, we obtain a tight constraint on the mean total matter density of the Universe,     , and measure a positive cosmological constant,     . Our results are in good agreement with recent, independent findings based on analyses of anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background radiation, the properties of distant supernovae, and the large-scale distribution of galaxies.  相似文献

The Large Observatory For X-ray Timing (LOFT), currently in an assessment phase in the framework the ESA M3 Cosmic Vision programme, is an innovative medium-class mission specifically designed to answer fundamental questions about the behaviour of matter, in the very strong gravitational and magnetic fields around compact objects and in supranuclear density conditions. Having an effective area of ~10 m2 at 8 keV, LOFT will be able to measure with high sensitivity very fast variability in the X-ray fluxes and spectra. A good knowledge of the in-orbit background environment is essential to assess the scientific performance of the mission and optimize the design of its main instrument, the Large Area Detector (LAD). In this paper the results of an extensive Geant-4 simulation of the instrumentwillbe discussed, showing the main contributions to the background and the design solutions for its reduction and control. Our results show that the current LOFT/LAD design is expected to meet its scientific requirement of a background rate equivalent to 10 mCrab in 2?30 keV, achieving about 5 mCrab in the most important 2–10 keV energy band. Moreover, simulations show an anticipated modulation of the background rate as small as 10 % over the orbital timescale. The intrinsic photonic origin of the largest background component also allows for an efficient modelling, supported by an in-flight active monitoring, allowing to predict systematic residuals significantly better than the requirement of 1 %, and actually meeting the 0.25 % science goal.  相似文献

The precision of intensity measurements of the extragalactic X-ray background (XRB) on an angular scale of about a degree is dominated by spatial fluctuations caused by source confusion noise. X-ray source counts at the flux level responsible for these fluctuations, ∼10−12 erg cm−2 s−1, will soon be accurately measured by new missions, and it will then be possible to detect the weaker fluctuations caused by the clustering of the fainter, more distant sources which produce the bulk of the XRB. We show here that measurements of these excess fluctuations at the level of (Δ I/I )∼2×10−3 are within reach, improving by an order of magnitude on present upper limits. Since it is likely that most (if not all) of the XRB will be resolved into sources by AXAF , subsequent optical identification of these sources will reveal the X-ray volume emissivity in the Universe as a function of redshift. With these ingredients, all-sky observations of the XRB can be used to measure the power spectrum (PS) of the density fluctuations in the Universe at comoving wavevectors k c∼0.01–0.1 Mpc−1 at redshifts where most of the XRB is likely to originate ( z ∼1–2) with a sensitivity similar to, or better than, the predictions from large-scale structure theories. A relatively simple X-ray experiment, carried out by a large-area proportional counter with a 0.5–2 deg2 collimated field of view scanning the whole sky a few times, would be able to determine the PS of the density fluctuations near its expected peak in wavevector with an accuracy better than 10 per cent.  相似文献

The diffuse X-ray background from 20 to 200 keV has been measured many times by rocket-, satellite-, and balloon-borne detectors. As has been noted by a number of authors, the balloon measurements do not agree with those outside the atmosphere. This suggests some systematic difference in the derivation of the diffuse flux. In the present article we propose a method for the analysis of balloon data in which the source function (atmospherically produced and scattered primary) is derived from the experimental data and is then used to calculate the residual counting rate due only to the transmitted primary photons.  相似文献

Most of the extragalactic sources from which very-high-energy (VHE, E > 1011 eV) gamma-ray fluxes have been detected belong to the category of high-energy peaked BL Lacertae objects (HBLs)—the sources in which the synchrotron radiation peaks in the UV or X-ray band. They often have higher X-ray luminosities than the VHE gamma-ray energy output, which makes them the most valuable objects for studying the characteristic spectral and temporal variations in the region of the synchrotron peak of the spectral energy distribution. The blazar 1ES 1426+428 belonging to this category is a target of many multiwavelength studies, both orbital and ground-based ones. The properties of its X-ray emission have also been investigated using RXTE/PCA, XMM-Newton, and SWIFT observations. Archival PCA/RXTE data with a total exposure time in 2002 and 2004 of ≈120h and the most recent available background and calibration files have been used. The extracted light curves of 1ES 1426+428 in the 2.9–24 keV energy band have shown an intense flaring activity on various time scales. Analysis of the observational data has also confirmed the spectral hardening with increasing X-ray intensity typical of blazars. The flaring state of the object is also characterized by a flat spectrum, which steepens with decreasing flux. The previously detected evidence of a spectral hysteresis in a separate flare has also been confirmed. Observations of 1ES 1426+428 with the SWIFT/XRT telescope and the EPIC instrument onboard XMM-Newton have revealed several intermediate-intensity flares in the 1.5–12 keV energy band with flux variations reaching a factor of 2, while analysis of the light curves has revealed a correlation between two components of the X-ray emission from the object.  相似文献

The spectral and temporal measurements in the hard X-ray region between 20-200 keV not only determines the extended behaviour of thermal X-ray spectrum below 10 keV but also provide a unique insight into the non-thermal processes in relativistic astrophysical plasma. From our present understanding of the X-ray sources, a significant fluxin the 20-200 keV band is expected from a variety of astrophysical phenomena, however, the available spectral data on the galactic and extragalactic X-ray source is very limited. This is mainly due to the fact that sensitivity of the detector systems used for earlier measurements was relatively poor. Since 1997, we have been carrying out a programme of hard X-ray observations galactic and extragalactic sources, in the 20-200 keV energy band using a highly sensitive balloon borne experiment. The X-ray telescope consists of three modules of large area scintillation counters specially configured in the back-to-back geometry and have a combined sensitivity of ∼ 10-6 ph cm-2 s-1 keV-1 for an on-source observations of 3 hrs. A total of 30 hours of ceiling data above an altitude of 3 mbar has been collected in 4 successful balloon flights from Hyderabad, India. Almost a dozen galactic and extragalactic X-ray sources were targeted and tracked during these observations. A positive detection was made in each case and in some cases the observed spectra extended right up to 150 keV. A brief account of the observed spectral and temporal features on some of the sources along with accurate measurement of diffuse background spectrum and a weak gamma ray burst will be presented in the paper. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We present the first results of measurements on solid particles performed at the Instituto de Astrof?´sica de Andaluc?´a (IAA) cosmic dust laboratory located in Granada, Spain. The laboratory apparatus measures the complete scattering matrix as a function of the scattering angle of aerosol particles. The measurements can be performed at a wavelength (λ) of 483, 488, 520, 568, or 647 nm in the scattering angle range from 3° to 177°. Results of special test experiments are presented which show that our experimental results for scattering matrices are not significantly contaminated by multiple scattering and that the sizes/shapes of the particles do not change during the measurements. Moreover, the measured scattering matrix for a sample of green clay particles is compared with measurements previously performed in the Amsterdam light scattering setup for the same sample. New measurements on a white clay sample at 488 and 647 nm are also presented. The apparatus is devoted to experimentally studying the angle dependence of scattering matrices of dust samples of astrophysical interest. Moreover, there is a great interest in similar studies of aerosols that can affect the radiative balance of the atmosphere of the Earth and other planets such as silicates, desert dust, volcanic ashes, and carbon soot particles.  相似文献
