The lithostratigraphy and biostratigraphy of two sites (Allt Odhar and Dalcharn) in north-central Scotland are described, where pollen spectra of temperate affinity have been obtained from organic deposits that underlie till. The pollen record from Allt Odhar, in association with evidence from plant macrofossils and Coleoptera, shows the expansion of birch woodland and its eventual replacement by open grassland under a climatic regime slightly cooler than that prevailing in the northern highlands of Scotland at the present day. The organic sediments accumulated during an Early Devensian interstadial episode, which has been dated by the uranium series disequilibrium method to ca. 106 ka BP. Evidence for one and possibly two Devensian glaciations may be preserved at the site. The pollen record from Dalcharn, by contrast, reflects the middle and later stages of an interglacial cycle with the transition from pine forest to grassland. The overlying till sequence contains evidence of at least two separate glacial episodes. The age of the warm stage cannot be established precisely on present evidence, but there are indications that it may predate the last (Ipswichian) interglacial. These are the first sites from the mainland of Scotland to provide evidence of wooded conditions during interstadial and interglacial episodes of the Middle/Late Pleistocene. 相似文献

A wide variety of Late Devensian periglacial landforms developed on Scottish mountains both before ca. 13,000 BP and during the Loch Lomond Stadial of ca. 11,000-10,000 BP. Nearly all such features are now inactive. Late Devensian periglacial weathering produced three types of regolith mantle (openwork block deposits, sandy diamicts and silt-rich frost-susceptible diamicts), each of which supports a characteristic assemblage of relict landforms. On upper slopes these include large-scale sorted circles and stripes, earth hummocks and nonsorted relief stripes, sorted and nonsorted solifluction features, massive boulder sheets and lobes, and nivation benches. Talus, protalus ramparts, rock glaciers and alluvial fans also developed at the base of mountain slopes. The distribution of Late Devensian periglacial features on Scottish mountains is locally controlled by topography, the response of underlying rocks to periglacial weathering and the limits of former glaciers. Regional variations in the altitude of certain forms of Loch Lomond Stadial age (particularly protalus ramparts and rock glaciers) indicate a decrease in former snowfall eastwards across the Scottish Highlands and northwards from the Highland Boundary Fault. Several upland periglacial features are also diagnostic of former permafrost, and complement palaeotemperature reconstructions based on ice-wedge casts and the equilibrium firn line altitudes of stadial glaciers. These suggest that under stadial conditions mean January temperatures at 600 m and 1000 m on mountains in the Western Grampians must have been no higher than −20°C and −23°C respectively, and possibly several degrees lower. 相似文献

Marine, fluvial and fluvioglacial terraces, and other landforms and deposits associated with them, have been mapped over an area that extends from Dundee to Stonehaven along the coast, and inland in places as far as the Highland edge. All well-defined terraces have been levelled at approximately 50 mintervals along their length. Analysis of the altitude data permits the recognition of eight glacio-isostatically tilted raised shorelines of Late Devensian age, sloping down towards E5S, the lowest at 0.2 m/km and the others at gradients of 0.50-0.85 m/km. Successively lower and less steeply inclined shorelines were formed in close association with a westward-receding ice margin, and there are indications that crustal response to unloading may have been immediate and rapid. Five of the shorelines are correlated with five of the six Late Devensian shorelines recognized by the authors (1966) in eastern Fife, allowing contemporaneous positions of the wasting ice-sheet margin in the two areas to be postulated. 相似文献

Offshore boreholes from the outer Firth of Clyde and from the Sea of the Hebrides passed through marine deposits of Holocene, Loch Lomond Stadial (LLS) and Windermere Interstadial (WI) age, but it is likely that older, probably Dimlington Stadial (DS) strata, now removed by erosion, were formerly present at the entrance to the Firth of Clyde. The late-glacial environment was one of very rapid deposition punctuated by erosive episodes. Reworking and redeposition led to the mixing of otherwise incompatible warm, shallow-water and cold, offshore faunas, particularly during a ‘warm’ event towards the end of the WI. The latter is correlated with Greenland Interstadial GI1a, but no evidence has been found for climatic ameliorations corresponding to GI1c and GI1e earlier in the Wl. A less cold interval at the end of the LLS may be coeval with climatic changes in Norway and the Shetland–Faroe Channel. Glacier ice disappeared from the outer Firth of Clyde before the close of the DS, and the Glasgow area was deglaciated across the DS/WI transition. The borehole evidence for the timing of deglaciation in the Sea of the Hebrides is inconclusive. 相似文献

Pre-Late Devensian organic deposits in the Buchan area of northeast Scotland were investigated for their geomorphological and palaeoecological (pollen, plant macrofossils, coleoptera) properties. Close ecological agreement exists between fossil indicators and allows the inference that the environment in the vicinity of the deposits was a dwarf shrub tundra of the type met today in high latitude areas of Scandinavia and arctic Russia. The latest in a series of radiocarbon dates from the site produced determinations beyond the limits of the method, although the geomorphological and fossil evidence appears to point to an interstadial date within Oxygen Isotope Stages 5a or 5c. The site has special significance for arguments concerning the much-debated concept of ‘Moraineless Buchan’; indeed, evidence is presented which supports the concept of extensive ice sheet glaciation during the Late Devensian for this crucial geographical area. If Buchan is to be seen as a further casualty amongst other disputed ice-free enclaves, then a return to earlier models of extensive ice sheet glaciation in the Late Devensian of Scotland would seem to be necessary. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Two episodes of glaciation are identified in the Teith valley, central Scotland. During the earlier episode, the valley was wholly occupied by an ice sheet, but during the later episode, correlated with the Loch Lomond Readvance, ice only occupied the upper part of the valley. The deglaciation which followed each episode was marked in particular by sequences of kame and outwash terraces. A terrace related to the second episode grades into a large fan buried beneath a sequence of marine deposits in the nearby Forth valley. The latest of these, the carse clays, are related to Flandrian terraces in the Teith valley. 相似文献

Two distinct glacigenic sediment-landform associations are described from the site of a former ice-dammed lake at Achnasheen, Ross-shire, Scotland. Firstly, three cross-valley ridges, principally composed of rain-out and sediment gravity flow deposits, were associated with a damming lobe of ice which directly controlled lake level. Secondly, large coalescing meltwater-fed deltas were developed in front of two outlet glaciers which initially terminated in the western end of the lake. The divergent evolution of the two associations is explained with reference to differing relationships between ice thickness and lake level, flux of meltwater, and glacier activity. 相似文献

Late Devensian raised shorelines and ice limits in the inner Moray Firth area, northern Scotland 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Marine, fluvial and fluvioglacial landforms and the deposits associated with them, have been mapped in the inner Moray Firth area. The landforms identified indicate a close association between the decay of the Late Devensian Scottish ice sheet and the formation of raised marine features. Analysis of the altitudes of the marine terraces has identified ten glacio-isostatically tilted raised shorelines of Late Devensian age, sloping down towards N25°E, at progressively lower gradients between 0.57 and 0.15 m/km. The shorelines were formed in close association with a westward- and southward-receding ice margin and the shoreline sequence suggests that rates of ice margin retreat were most rapid where the ice terminated in the sea. 相似文献

Anomalous arboreal pollen assemblages in Late Devensian and Early Flandrian deposits at Creich Castle, Fife, Scotland 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3

Pollen analysis of a radiocarbon-dated core from a shallow basin in volcanic hills in eastern Scotland revealed the existence of Late Devensian and Flandrian deposits. Much of the vegetation history of the Flandrian proved to be missing due to a hiatus in the profile. The Late Devensian pollen record included anomalous arboreal taxa of three possible origins: contamination, long-distance wind transport and reworking of interstadial material. Because of lacking information on Late Devensian climates and the location of thermophilous arboreal refugia in Europe a re-examination of supposedly contaminated British Late Devensian pollen records might well be rewarding. 相似文献

Temperatures have been calculated from the composition of sixty-five coexisting ortho- and clinopyroxene pairs from the Adirondacks, New York, using calibrations proposed by Wood & Banno (1973), Ross & Huebner (1975), Saxena (1976) and Wells (1977), in order to test the accuracy and precision of pyroxene thermometers in metamorphic granulites. Calculated temperatures are highly scattered () and show no systematic variation within the Adirondack terrane. Several pyroxene pairs from very localized areas near Colton (N.W. Adirondacks) and Tupper Lake (C. Adirondacks) yield similar scattered temperatures (600–900°C), which disagree with feldspar and oxide thermometry and are inconsistent with the stability of various silicate and/or sulfide assemblages. All pyroxene thermometer models are sensitive to ferrous-ferric ratios with variations of up to 50°C when Fe3+ is estimated from pyroxene stoichiometry of pyroxene compositions obtained by microprobe analysis. These data suggest that the present pyroxene thermometers are sufficiently inconsistent, inaccurate and imprecise that they should not be used as quantitative thermometers in metamorphic rocks. 相似文献

Detailed litho‐ and biostratigraphical analyses from three coastal sites in contrasting coastal settings on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK, reveal evidence for several changes in relative sea level during the Late Devensian and Holocene. At the start of the record, relative sea level in the area was high at ca. 12 500 14C (ca. 14 800 cal.) yr BP but then fell, reaching a low point during the Younger Dryas, at ca. 11 000–10 000 14C (ca. 13 000–11 600 cal.) yr BP, when a rock platform, correlated with the Main Rock Platform, was formed. In the early–middle Holocene, relative sea level was rising by ca. 8000 14C (ca. 8800 cal.) yr BP and in northeast Skye a lagoonal surface, correlated with the Main Postglacial Shoreline, was formed at ca. 6600 14C (ca. 7500 cal.) yr BP. By the late Holocene, relative sea level was again falling, but a rise, registered at at least two sites, began probably before ca. 4000 14C (ca. 4500 cal.) yr BP, and a second lagoonal surface in northeast Skye, correlated with the Blairdrummond Shoreline, was formed, although by ca. 3000 14C (ca. 3200 cal.) yr BP relative sea level in the area had resumed its downward trend. The pattern of relative sea‐level changes disclosed is compared with evidence elsewhere in Scotland. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Late Devensian raised marine deposits predating the Windermere Interstadial (c. 13–11 ka BP) are found between the Moray Firth and Berwick. The widely distributed, sparsely fossiliferous Errol Clay Formation of the firths of Forth and Tay was laid down in a high-arctic environment immediately following the retreat of the Late Devensian (Dimlington Stadial) ice. In the Tay Estuary, sedimentation took place under distal glaciomarine to marine conditions at a time when there was a fully marine connection between the Scottish east coast and the then high-arctic Norwegian Sea. On the south shore of the Moray Firth, the similar, but undated Spynie Clay Formation seems to have been laid down in a wholly glaciomarine environment. Part of the macrofauna attributed to the St. Fergus Silt Formation of the NE Scottish coast may have been either misidentified, or is not in situ. The preservation of the fauna and of delicate sedimentary structures indicate that the arctic clays as a whole were laid down rapidly. It is suggested that tidal currents were minimal, and that waves were dampened by sea ice for much of the year. Bones of the ringed seal, Phoca hispida, have been recorded from 12 sites in eastern Scotland. About 40 macrofaunal taxa are present in the Errol Clay Formation, a number similar to that recorded in the Danish Younger Yoldia Clay, which is of comparable age. The faunal nomenclature is updated, and three species (Cylichna occulta, Retusa obtusa and Lyonsia arenosa) are added to the macrofaunal list for the Errol Clay Formation. Reports of in situ boreal molluscs and of one possibly North American species in the otherwise high-arctic assemblage are not supported by specimens in extant collections. Differential decay of the fauna below the zone of weathering in the Errol Clay Formation may have resulted from early diagenesis. Deposition of the Late Devensian, pre-Windermere Interstadial marine sediments as a whole was probably diachronous, beginning after 15–14 ka BP on the outer coast, but was confined to a short interval (c. 13.5–13 ka BP) at the type site in the Tay Estuary. In the Forth Estuary, the high-arctic marine fauna adjacent to the retreating ice-front may have survived the rapid climatic amelioration (c. 13 ka BP) at the beginning of the Windermere Interstadial (marked by the Main Perth Shoreline) for perhaps a few decades. 相似文献

On North Harris and southeast Lewis a weathering limit separates glacially-moulded bedrock on low ground from frost-shattered bedrock and blockfields on high plateaux. Analysis of the depths of horizontal stress-release joints demonstrates significant contrasts in bedrock weathering above and below this boundary, and the survival of gibbsite only in soils above the weathering limit indicates that it represents the upper limit of Late Devensian glacial erosion. The weathering limit declines regularly in altitude on either side of the former ice shed, and is therefore interpreted as a periglacial trimline defining the upper limit of a locally-nourished ice mass at its maximum extent, rather than a former thermal boundary between protective cold-based and erosive warm-based ice. Calculated basal shear stress values are consistent with this interpretation. The configuration of the trimline indicates that at the last glacial maximum the area supported an ice cap that achieved a maximum altitude of ca. 700 m above present sea level and declined in altitude to the west-northwest and east-southeast at an average gradient of ca. 20 m km?1. Extrapolation of the dimensions of this ice cap suggests that it terminated ca. 7–10 km west of the present coast of Harris, and was confluent with mainland ice a short distance east of the present coastline. 相似文献

An investigation into the late Pleistocene sediments exposed at Afton Lodge has helped to clarify the glacial history of western central Scotland. The sequence includes several allochthonous bodies of ‘shelly clay’ (Afton Lodge Clay Formation) associated with Late Devensian (Weichselian) age diamict. The shelly clay contains abundant marine macro- and microfauna, as well as palynomorphs consistent with its deposition within a shallow marine to estuarine environment. Faunal changes within the main body of marine clay record at least one, millennial-scale cycle of Arctic-Boreal, to Boreal, and back to Arctic-Boreal climatic conditions. A radiocarbon date of over 41 ka 14C BP obtained from the foraminifera indicates that the marine clays are older than the surrounding till. Afton Lodge is thus one of a suite of ‘high-level’ shelly clay occurrences around the Scottish coasts that are now considered to be glacially transported. Together with closely associated ‘shelly tills’, the rafts were emplaced during an early phase of the last glaciation by ice flowing from the western Grampian Highlands of Scotland through the topographically-confined Firth of Clyde basin. The blocks of marine sediment were detached subglacially, unfrozen, and carried at least 10 km by ice that splayed out onshore against reversed slopes favouring raft emplacement and the creation of closely associated ribbed moraine. Transport of the rafts was facilitated by water-lubricated décollement surfaces and their accretion was accompanied by dewatering. The shelly tills were formed mainly by the attenuation and crushing of rafts of shelly clay during their transport within the subglacial deforming bed. 相似文献

During 1987, in situ stress measurements using two overcoring techniques (doorstopper and triaxial strain cell) were made in England and Scotland as part of the former SFB 108 Project ‘Stress and Stress Release in the Lithosphere’ at Karlsruhe University. The results for three of the test sites—Spittal in Caithness, Gartur in the Midland Valley of Scotland and at Burton in Cumbria—are reported. Complementary studies on cores from Gartur using portable ASR equipment are included. The maximum horizontal stress orientations agree closely with those seen in the general contemporary stress field in NW Europe. These results confirm that, in favourable circumstances, these shallow methods offer effective approaches to the acquisition of reliable contemporary stress information, whether derived from boreholes or rock cores. 相似文献

The Late Devensian Lateglacial palaeoenvironmental record from Whitrig Bog, SE Scotland. 2. Chironomidae (Insecta: Diptera) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

Changes in chironomid midge larval assemblages in Lateglacial (c. 13.5–10 ka yr BP) lake sediments from Whitrig Bog are used to infer climatic (temperature) change. The earliest sediments contain few, predominantly cold stenothermic taxa. This fauna is replaced by an assemblage dominated by thermophilic taxa, indicating rising temperatures. The relatively warm Interstadial is punctuated by at least two brief cold oscillations which are characterized by the return of certain cold-water taxa and the demise of some elements of the thermophilic fauna. The earlier of the two oscillations was apparently shorter and colder than the second. The highest Lateglacial Interstadial temperatures were attained either shortly before or after the first cold oscillation. This timing of the Lateglacial thermal maximum is apparently later than has been previously inferred from fossil beetle data. The Lateglacial Interstadial is terminated by the Loch Lomond (Young Dryas) Stadial, which is indicated in this monolith by an abrupt return of cold stenothermic Chironomidae and the virtual elimination of thermophilic taxa. Temperatures during the Younger Dryas appear to have been colder than during either of the previous minor cold oscillations. Climatic inferences from chironomid analysis broadly support and augment conclusions drawn from sediment chemistry and palynological evidence derived from the same monolith, although there is evidence that the vegetation and chironomid responses to early postglacial warming were out of phase. 相似文献

The mode of deglaciation of the last Scottish ice sheet is assessed from evidence provided by geomorphological mapping and sedimentology. Ice-marginal deposits in the Dee valley have a distinctive morphological expression and a characteristically varied sedimentology that strongly resembles those from subpolar glaciers. The deposits tend to occur in certain topographic situations which can be accounted for by compression of ice near the margin and formation of an ice-cored supraglacial land system. A series of recessional stages of the ice-front can be mapped demonstrating that active retreat occurred. However, additional evidence shows there was probably a thin marginal zone of stagnant ice. Recessional stages are inferred to be stillstands that are considered to be topographically controlled rather than related to climate. Development of the supraglacial land system during deglaciation suggests that the ice sheet had a polythermal basal regime with a cold-based margin. This implies that deglaciation took place in northeast Scotland while the climate remained cold, probably due to a precipitation deficit, which agrees well with chronostratigraphic data. 相似文献
