Comet NEAT C/2001 Q4 was observed for linear polarization using the optical polarimeter mounted at the 1.2 m telescope at Mt. Abu Observatory, during the months of May and June 2004. Observations were conducted through the International Halley Watch narrow band (continuum) and BVR broad band filters. During the observing run the phase angle ranged from 85.6° in May to 55° in June. As expected, polarization increases with wavelength in this phase angle range. Polarization colour in the narrow bands changes at different epochs, perhaps related to cometary activity or molecular emission contamination. The polarization was also measured in the cometary coma at different locations along a line, in the direction of the tail. As expected, we notice minor decrease in the polarization as photocenter (nucleus) is traversed while brightness decreases sharply away from it. Based on these polarization observations we infer that the Comet NEAT C/2001 Q4 has high polarization and a typical grain composition—mixture of silicates and organics.  相似文献

The paper presents the results of the spectral observations of comet C/2001 Q4 (NEAT) acquired with the Zeiss-600 telescope of the Andrushevka astronomical observatory in May 2004. The spectrum of the comet was obtained in the range of 3600–8200 Å. We identified a number of emission features in the spectrum of comet C/2001 Q4 (NEAT). The emission bands of C2, C3, CN, CH, NH2, H2O+ were detected in the spectrum of the comet, and their intensities were determined. The ratios of gas-production rates Q(C2)/Q(CN) = 0.23, Q(C3)/Q(CN) = ?0.79, and Q(NH2)/Q(CN) = ?0.029 were determined with the Haser model.  相似文献

We present results of polarimetry and photometry of comet C/2004 Q2 (Machholz) obtained with the 0.7-m telescope of Institute of Astronomy at the Karazin Kharkiv National University on February 3 and 4, and March 4 and 14, 2005. The observations were carried out with a one-channel photoelectric photometer-polarimeter. The IHW continuum UC (λ3650/80 Å), BC (λ4845/65 Å), RC (λ6840/90 Å) and emission filters CN (λ3871/50 Å), C3 (λ4060/70 Å), and C2 (λ5140/90 Å) were used. Degree of the comet polarization at phase angles ≈ 52° and ≈44° in the red continuum was close to that for so called dusty comets. The comet had a typical spectral gradient of polarization ΔP/Δλ=0.86% per 1000 Å. In the framework of the Haser model we have found the gas production rates Q of the CN, C3 and C2 species and the dust production rates Afρ on February 4 and March 14, 2005. The ratio log[Afρ (BC)/Q(CN)] was compared with data for other comets. The normalized spectral gradient of cometary dust S’(BC,RC) was 8.7%/1000 Å for February 4 and 17.0%/1000 Å for March 14. We conclude that comet C/2004 Q2 (Machholz) in many respects is a typical dusty comet.  相似文献

Our observations of Comet C/2004 Q2 (Machholz) in the range from 1.2 to 4.8 µm indicate that the material outflowed from the cometary surface in the form of fragments that separated into gas and dust under sublimation on time scales of the order of days. The albedo of these fragments in the range under study was wavelength independent, while the dust was heated by the Sun to an equilibrium temperature at a cross section Qλ inversely proportional to the wavelength.  相似文献

Light curves of six comets, C/1999 S4 (LINEAR), C/2001 Q4 (NEAT), C/2002 T7 (LINEAR), C/2002 V1 (NEAT), C/2004 Q2 (Machholz), and 153P/2002 C1 (Ikeya-Zhang), were built and investigated. The photometric parameters H 0, H 10, and n were calculated for these comets, and they were found to change both before and after perihelion. The shift of light curve peak with respect to perihelion passage moment was determined for each comet. Our white-light curves are compared to the results of polarimetric and electrophotometric observations of the comets C/2002 T7 (LINEAR) and C/2004 Q2 (Machholz).  相似文献

We studied variations in the structure of plasma and dust tails of the C/2006 M4 (SWAN) comet during a long observation period (September–December 2006). We found sizes of grains ejected by the comet from the synchronic-syndynamic analysis of comet images. We calculated solar wind speed for high heliographic latitudes from calculations of the aberration angle of the comet plasma tail. Rapid changes in the calculated values of the solar wind speed are caused by its variable transversal component.  相似文献

The Chandra X-ray Observatory (CXO) observations of Comets McNaught-Hartley (MH) and LINEAR S4 (S4) have been processed in the same way to compare X-rays from those comets. The X-ray isophotes are crescent-like in S4 and more circular in MH because of the different phase angles (98° and 44°, respectively). The peak X-ray brightness is greater in S4 than that in MH by a factor of 1.5 and smaller by a factor of 1.7 after the correction for heliocentric distance. The X-ray luminosities of MH and S4 are equal to 8.6 and 1.4×1015 erg s−1 inside the apertures of ρ=1.5 and 0.5×104 km, respectively. (Brightness is 20% of the peak value at these ρ.) Efficiencies of X-ray excitation corrected to the solar wind flow are similar and equal to 4.3×10−14 erg AU3/2 in both comets. This confirms the solar wind excitation of X-rays in comets. Spectra of the comets were extracted with a special care of the background correction and using an energy-dependent spectral resolution code. The MH spectrum consists of ten emissions instead of nine emissions in the previously published spectrum. The new emission at 307 eV fills in a strong minimum in the previous spectrum and removes the major difference between that spectrum and the synthetic spectrum. This emission is assigned to the C+4 and Mg+9 lines. The positions of the other emissions and their identification are similar to those in the previous spectrum. The S4 spectrum consists of eight emissions, and four emissions are the same as in MH. The line identification is given. Ion ratios in the solar wind have been extracted from the spectra. O+8/O+7 is equal to 0.29±0.04 and 0.14±0.02 in MH and S4, and this difference correlates with the higher solar wind speed in S4. Ne+9/O+7 is (15±6)×10−3 and (19±7)×10−3, and these are the first data on Ne+9 in the solar wind. C+6/O+7 is 0.7±0.2 in both MH and S4. X-ray spectroscopy of comets may be used as a diagnostic tool to study the solar wind composition.  相似文献

We deal with theoretical meteoroid streams the parent bodies of which are two Halley-type comets in orbits situated at a relatively large distance from the orbit of Earth: 126P/1996 P1 and 161P/2004 V2. For two perihelion passages of each comet in the far past, we model the theoretical stream and follow its dynamical evolution until the present. We predict the characteristics of potential meteor showers according to the dynamical properties of theoretical particles currently approaching the orbit of the Earth. Our dynamical study reveals that the comet 161P/2004 V2 could have an associated Earth-observable meteor shower, although no significant number of theoretical particles are identified with real, photographic, video, or radar meteors. However, the mean radiant of the shower is predicted on the southern sky (its declination is about −23°) where a relatively low number of real meteors has been detected and, therefore, recorded in the databases used. The shower of 161P has a compact radiant area and a relatively large geocentric velocity of ∼53 km s−1. A significant fraction of particles assumed to be released from comet 126P also cross the Earth’s orbit and, eventually, could be observed as meteors. However, their radiant area is largely dispersed (declination of radiants spans from about +60° to the south pole) and, therefore, mixed with the sporadic meteor background. An identification with real meteors is practically impossible.  相似文献

In order to monitor the various phenomena of comets, we continuously made the near-nucleus imaging observations of comets at National Astronomical Observatory, Mitaka. Here we report on the results of the observations of two spectacular comets. One is the analysis of photometry of C2 emission images in the coma of comet Hyakutake (C/1996 B2). By comparing the production rates of C2 radicals with C2H2 molecules, we conclude that the most C2 radicals were originated from C2H2, while some of them might be produced from other parents. The second item is the analysis of the morphology of C2 emission images in the coma of comet Hale-Bopp(C/1995 O1). By applying a ring masking technique, we detected asymmetrical distribution of the C2 molecules. The results of these two comets might suggest that a portion of C2 radicals were formed by the disintegration of the small organic dust grains, like the so-called CHON particles. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The chemistry of both nitrogen and sulfur presents interesting problems in comets. In this paper, we use a model of cometary comae with gas-phase chemical kineticsand gas dynamics to predict molecular abundances in the inner coma region for twoof the brightest comets in the past 20 years, Hyakutake (C/1996 B2) and Hale–Bopp(C/1995 O1). In this progress report we concentrate on the gas-phase chemistry of thenitrogen sulfide (NS) radical at a heliocentric distance of 1 AU to study the abundanceof NS using a detailed photo and chemical reaction network with over 100 species andabout 1000 reactions. The results are compared with recent observations of CometHale–Bopp and reveal that conventional gas-phase reactions schemes do not produceNS in sufficient quantities to explain the observations. We plan to continue therefinement of the model to improve agreement with observational constraints.  相似文献

Orbits are calculated for Comet C/1845 L1 (the Great June Comet) and C/1846 D1 (de Vico), the former based on 157 observations in right ascension and 152 in declination and the latter on 10 and 9, respectively. Both orbits are hyperbolic and statistically distinguishable from parabolas. Statistical tests indicate that the residuals are random and thus the orbits satisfactory. The Great June Comet is in no way associated with the comet Tycho Brahe observed in 1596 (© 2009 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

Near-simultaneous R- and J-band photometric measurements of the short-period Comets 2P/Encke and the Deep Impact mission target 9P/Tempel 1 were obtained. The resulting R-J colors are +0.82±0.08 mag and +1.46±0.13 mag for Encke and Tempel 1, respectively. Tempel 1's color is redder than the solar R-J color index of +0.76. The Tempel 1 observations directly detected the nucleus while the Encke observations likely suffered from coma contamination.  相似文献

We analyze the chemical composition and abundances of comets based on in situ measurements of Comet 1P/Halley and remote sensing observations of several recent bright comets including Hale-Bopp (C/1995 O1) and Hyakutake (C/1996 B2), in light of the elemental abundances of the solar system. Nitrogen is underabundant in comets relative to the solar system because nitrogen tends to be in N2, which is chemically relatively inert. While many details remain uncertain, some gross features are emerging. The abundance of water : silicates: carbonaceous molecules (CO, CO2, and hydrocarbons) by mass is approximately 1 : 1 : 1. Furthermore, the mass abundance of ice : dust (silicates and hydrocarbon polycondensates) is about1 : 1. We compare a list of identified comet molecules with molecules detected in the interstellar medium, although a comparison with their relative abundances, particularly in the ice phase, would be more meaningful. However, ice-phase abundances are not yet available. One can expect a variation of the abundances of carbon-bearing molecules in comets to be associated with their place of origin in the solar nebula. However, we also note that comets are heterogeneous. Thus, observed differences may be related to the place of origin, heterogeneity of the nucleus, or acquired through evolution. The molecular and elemental compositions of the coma are most likely not the same as those in the nucleus. This is particularly true for volatile ices and their gases and for the dust-to-ice and dust-to-gas ratios. Analyses must carefully consider the three sources of gas: Water from the surface of the nucleus, gases more volatile than water from the interior of the nucleus, and gases from the sublimation of the dust distributed in the coma. Topography on the surface of the nucleus may cause important evolutionary differences in the dust-to-gas mass ratio. Relatively inactive areas on the surface of the nucleus are probably associated with convex topography. Gas sublimated from convex areas (hills and mountains) diverges more strongly relative to gas sublimated from concave areas, which can entrain dust more efficiently. Thus, the entrainment of dust from convex areas is poor and dust may fall back to the surface of the nucleus creating a dust mantle, which further inhibits outgassing.  相似文献

We made polarimetric observations of comet Hale–Bopp covering awide phase angle range, from 18.8 to 47°. At certain phase angles the heliocentricdistance of the comet was less than 1 AU during its pre and post perihelion passages. Oneof the important findings, based on the data in the visual bands, is the higher polarizationwith stronger wavelength dependence compared to comet Halley, indicating the presenceof much finer grains in comet Hale–Bopp. It may also be noted that comet Hale–Bopphas shown highest degree of polarization known so far for any comet and hence fallsin the class of high polarization comets. Polarimetric observations were made of cometC/2000 WM1 (LINEAR)using narrow band (IHW) filters 4845 Å and 7000 Åand broad bands filters BVR during November 23–26, 2001 when the phase angle rangedfrom 15 to 22°. Some of the results based on these observations are presented anddiscussed.  相似文献

The origin of Jupiter-family comets is linked to the intermediate stage of evolution through the Centaur region. Thus the structure of the Centaur population provides important constraints on sources of short-period comets. We show that our model of the Oort cloud evolution gives results which are consistent with the orbital distribution of observed Centaurs. In particular, it explains the existence of the large population of Centaurs with semimajor axes greater than 60 AU. The main source for these objects is the inner Oort cloud. Both Jupiter-family and Halley-type comets are produced by Centaurs originating from the Oort cloud. The injection rate for Jupiter-family comets coming from the inner Oort cloud is, at least, not less than that for a model based on the observed sample of high-eccentricity trans-Neptunian objects.  相似文献

We present the results of polarimetric and photometricobservations of split Comet C/2001 A2 (LINEAR), which wereobtained at the 70-cm telescope of the Astronomical Observatoryof Kharkiv National University between 30 June and 31 July 2001.The brightest fragment of the comet, nucleus B, was observed.Eight narrowband cometary filters in the continuum and in emissionbands and a wideband red filter have been used. The comet wasobserved through apertures of 88, 33, and 19 arcsec. Polarizationphase curves were obtained for the continuum and for the firsttime, for NH2(0, 7, 0) emission. The degree of polarization ofthe light scattered by the dust decreases with the increase ofaperture size. An important temporal variation of the polarizationwith a rotation of the polarization plane was observed at twophase angles (26.5° and 36.2°). Molecular column densities and production rates of CN, C2,C3, and NH2 species are calculated in the framework of theHaser model. A comparative analysis of the temporal variations ofthe visual magnitudes, gas and dust production rates, dust colorand polarization are presented.  相似文献

Until cometary matter can be studied in-situ or cometary samples are brought back to Earth for analysis, theoretical models and laboratory studies remain a crucial tool for revealing the nature of cometary matter. Constraints on the nature of the primordial material available for incorporation into comets and other solar system material comes from analysis of data from space-based and ground-based observatories. The structure of the nuclear ice component, which may have coexisting amorphous/crystalline phases and include clathrates and other trapped guest molecules, strongly influences the cometary outgassing properties. This paper reviews laboratory work on ice and carbon aceous compounds and discusses their significance for cometary chemistry. Special emphasis will be given to studies on the thermal processing of ices and their implications for the structure changes and subsequent release of volatiles. We also describe the preliminary results of a model of nuclear outgassing, and discuss how such model scan be used to infer the chemical structure of the nuclearices. Furthermore, we confront cometary data with the analysis of carbonaceous meteorites. Recent laboratory results on volatile compounds and the macro molecular structure of carbonaceous meteorites allow us to investigate the link of small bodies in the Solar System. Until ROSETTA will land on comet Wirtanen and study directly the nuclear composition, laboratory measurements of ice and refractory analogs will — together with the analysis of meteorites —significantly improve our knowledge on the origin and structure ofcomets.  相似文献
