Low-noise limb-effect observations of the non-magnetic line Fei 557.6 nm are presented. Separate measurements along the solar equator and the meridian have been carried out and have been corrected for scattered light. The limb-effect line shifts at the pole and at the equatorial limb are found to be equal. The detailed shape of the limb effect along the meridian is found to differ significantly from that along the equator. This difference can be explained by the presence of a meridional circulation pattern, with horizontal flows < 50 m–1 from both the equator and poles toward ± 45° latitude. Alternatively the meridian/equator difference may be caused by a combination of latitude dependence of the granular parameters. An increase with latitude of the granular velocity scale height, contrast, or mean sizes could explain the observations.  相似文献

Solar rotation during the Maunder Minimum   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
We have measured solar surface rotation from sunspot drawings made in a.d. 1642–1644 and find probable differences from present-day rates. The 17th century sunspots rotated faster near the equator by 3 or 4%, and the differential rotation between 0 and ±20° latitude was enhanced by about a factor 3. These differences are consistent features in both spots and groups of spots and in both northern and southern hemispheres. We presume that this apparent change in surface rotation was related to the ensuing dearth of solar activity (the Maunder Minimum) which persisted until about 1715.The National Center for Atmospheric Research is sponsored by the National Science Foundation.  相似文献

The multicolor light curves (UBVRI) of HU Vir have been analyzed to study starspots for epochs 1987 and 1989. The term 'photometric imaging' has been used for predicting cool surface spots by photometric data. Assuming the number of spots and the area are about the same for the two hemispheres, the distributive solar analogy is introduced as a tool to constrain free values of spot parameters into unique values. Therefore, final fitting parameters are claimed unique in a sense that they are independent of free initial guesses. The light and color variations of HU Vir are better explained without polar spots. Finally, the spots are found to be ∼ 1600 K cooler than the T∼ 5000 K of this cool subgiant and cover ∼ %13.9 of the total surface at ±8.0 degrees from the equator for the epoch 1987. The spots at the epoch 1989 are found to be ∼ 2040 K cooler covering ∼ % 12.7 area at ± 27°.7 latitudes. Problems of photometric imaging and possible solutions with distributive solar analogy have been discussed. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The mean latitude of prominence samples referring to one boundary of the polarity division line of the large-scale magnetic field is calculated on the basis of H charts in the period 1955–1982. It is shown that the magnetic field in that period had a latitude zonal structure. The boundaries of the latitude zones of the magnetic field had no regular equatorwards migration. They either oscillated near the mean boundaries at 0°, ±20°, ±40°, or migrated polewards.  相似文献

Data from the two HEOS satellites obtained during the period December 1968 to August 1974 are used to investigate the large-scale properties of the interplanetary magnetic field. The sector structure has been deduced from the observed times of sector boundary crossings which are tabulated. A two-sector pattern existed throughout most of the period with occasional intervals of 2–3 months duration in which four sectors appeared. The variation of the dominant sector polarity with heliographic latitude showed a reversal in sense during 1971 at the time of the reported reversal in the Sun's polar field. A statistical analysis of the change in polarity distribution with latitude suggests that at Earth's orbit the sector boundaries are inclined to the solar equator on average at an angle of 12 deg.No evidence was found in the HEOS measurements of the north-south field component to confirm the systematic latitude-dependent deviation of the plasma flow away from the solar equatorial plane suggested by several analyses of data from previous spacecraft. The mean field magnitude and the average amplitude of the directional fluctuations appeared to be independent of heliographic latitude within the ±7.3° range explored.  相似文献

B andV photometry of DM UMa obtained between January, 1980 and June, 1984 is presented. Analysis yields a mean photometric period 7d.478±0d.010, compared to the known oribital period of 7d.492±0d.009. Light curves obtained during any two seasons do not agree in any of the following: shape, amplitude, phases of the light maxima and minima, mean light level, or brightness at the light maxima and minima. From the change inB-V over the photometric period, we concludethat the hemisphere visible during the light minimum is cooler than that seen during light maximum. The mean colorB-V=1m.065±0m.002 is consistent with K1 III or K2 IV. Phases of light minima lie on two well-separated groups with different slopes; the corresponding periods are 7d.471±0d.002 and 7d.481±0d.001, in dicating that both migrate linearly towards decreasing orbital phase. In terms of the starspot model this indicates that two respective centers of activity were situated at different longitudes and latitudes on a differentially rotating star. From circumstantial evidence we infer that the dark region seen from 1979 onwards disintegrated sometime between the 1982 and 1983 observing seasons, leaving behind an area of relatively high surface brightness. We can put a lower limit of about four years on the lifetime of a center of activity.  相似文献

Fe XIV 5303 coronal emission line observations have been used for the estimation of the rotation behaviour of the green solar corona. A homogeneous data set, created from measurements carried out within the framework of the world-wide coronagraphic network, has been examined with a correlation analysis to reveal the averaged synodic rotation period as a function of latitude and time over the epoch from 1964 to 1989.The values of the synodic rotation period obtained for the epoch 1964–1989 for the whole range of latitudes and for a latitude band ±30° are 28.18±0.12 days and 27.65±0.13 days, respectively. The differential rotation of the green solar corona was confirmed, together with local maxima of the rotation period at latitudes 45° and -60° and a minimum at the equator, but no clear cyclic variation of the rotation has been found for the epoch examined.  相似文献

The atmospheric activity in the equatorial region of Jupiter, approximately in the zone between the zenocentric latitude ±12° has been studied during the period 1963-1967 by computing the photometric coefficient of activity.A north-south asymmetry has been found. Different periodicities of the activity for zones of different latitudes are found.  相似文献

The disk-resolved flyby images of the nucleus of Comet 81P/Wild 2 collected by Stardust are used to perform a detailed study of the photometric properties of this cometary nucleus. A disk-integrated phase function from phase angle 11° to about 100° is measured and modeled. A phase slope of 0.0513 ± 0.0002 mag/deg is found, with a V-band absolute magnitude of 16.29 ± 0.02. Hapke’s photometric model yields a single-scattering albedo of 0.034, an asymmetry factor of phase function −0.53, a geometric albedo 0.059, and a V-band absolute magnitude of 16.03 ± 0.07. Disk-resolved photometric modeling from both the Hapke model and the Minnaert model results in 11% model RMS, indicating small photometric variations. The roughness parameter is modeled to be 27 ± 5° from limb-darkening profile. The modeled single-scattering albedo and asymmetry factor of the phase function are 0.038 ± 0.004 and −0.52 ± 0.04, respectively, consistent with those from disk-integrated phase function. The bulk photometric properties of the nucleus of Wild 2 are comparable with those of other cometary nuclei. The photometric variations on the surface of the nucleus of Wild 2 are at a level of or smaller than 15%, much smaller than those on the nucleus of Comet 19P/Borrelly and comparable or smaller than those on the nucleus of Comet 9P/Tempel 1. The similar photometric parameters of the nuclei of Wild 2, Tempel 1, and the non-source areas of fan jets on Borrelly may reflect the typical photometric properties of the weakly active surfaces on cometary nuclei.  相似文献

The photometric properties of the nucleus of Comet 9P/Tempel 1 are studied from the disk-resolved color images obtained by Deep Impact (DI). Comet Tempel 1 has typical photometric properties for comets and dark asteroids. The disk-integrated spectrum of the nucleus of Tempel 1 between 309 and 950 nm is linear without any features at the spectral resolution of the filtered images. At V-band, the red slope of the nucleus is 12.5±1% per 100 nm at 63° phase angle, translating to B-V=0.84±0.01, V-R=0.50±0.01, and R-I=0.49±0.02. No phase reddening is confirmed. The phase function of the nucleus of Tempel 1 is constructed from DI images and earlier ground-based observations found from the literature. The phase coefficient is determined to be β=0.046±0.007 mag/deg between 4° and 117° phase angle. Hapke's theoretical scattering model was used to model the photometric properties of this comet. Assuming a single Henyey-Greenstein function for the single-particle phase function, the asymmetry factor of Tempel 1 was fitted to be g=−0.49±0.02, and the corresponding single-scattering albedo (SSA) was modeled to be 0.039±0.005 at 550 nm wavelength. The SSA spectrum shows a similar linear slope to that of the disk-integrated spectrum. The roughness parameter is found to be 16°±8°, and independent of wavelength. The Minnaert k parameter is modeled to be 0.680±0.014. The photometric variations on Tempel 1 are relatively small compared to other comets and asteroids, with a ∼20% full width at half maximum of albedo variation histogram, and ∼3% for color. Roughness variations are evident in one small area, with a roughness parameter about twice the average and appearing to correlate with the complex morphological texture seen in high-resolution images.  相似文献

We estimate Asteroid 1992 SK's physical properties from delay-Doppler images and Doppler-only echo spectra obtained during March 22-27, 1999, at Goldstone and from optical lightcurves obtained during February-March 1999 at Ond?ejov Observatory. The images span only about 15° of sky motion and are not strong, but they place up to twenty 40 m by 160 m pixels on the asteroid and have complete rotational phase coverage. Our analysis establishes that the radar observations are confined to subradar latitudes between −20° and −40°. The echo spectra and optical lightcurves span ∼80° of sky motion, which provides important geometric leverage on the pole direction. The lightcurves are essential for accurate estimation of the asteroid's shape and spin state. We estimate the asteroid's period to be 7.3182±0.0003 h and its pole direction to be at ecliptic longitude, latitude=(99°±5°,−3°±5°). The asteroid is about 1.4 km in maximum extent and mildly asymmetric, with an elongation of about 1.5 and relatively subdued topography. The OC radar albedo is 0.11±0.02 and the SC/OC ratio is 0.34±0.05. The current orbital solution permits accurate identification of planetary close approaches during 826-2690. We use our model to predict salient characteristics of radar images and optical lightcurves obtainable during the asteroid's March 2006 approach.  相似文献

We present observations of the Centaur (32532) 2001 PT13 taken between September 2000 and December 2000. A multi-wavelength lightcurve was assembled from V-, R- and J-band photometry measurements. Analysis of the lightcurve indicates that there are two peaks of slightly different brightness, a rotation period of 0.34741±0.00005 day, and a maximum photometric range of 0.18 mag. We obtained VRJHK colors (V-R=0.50±0.01, V-J=1.69±0.02, V-H=2.19±0.04, and V-K=2.30±0.04) that are consistent with the grey KBO/Centaur population. The V-R color shows no variation as a function of rotational phase; however, we cannot exclude the possibility that rotational variations are present in the R-J color. Assuming a 4% albedo, we estimate that 2001 PT13 has an effective diameter of 90 km and a minimum axial ratio a/b of 1.18. We find no evidence of a coma and place an upper limit of 15 g s−1 on the dust production rate.  相似文献

The analysis of all suitable images taken of Neptune with the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 on the Hubble Space Telescope between 1994 and 2008 revealed the following results. The activity of discrete cloud features located near Neptune’s tropopause remained roughly constant within each year but changed significantly on the time scale of ∼5 years. Discrete clouds covered 1% of the disk on average, but more than 2% in 2002. The other ∼99% of the disk probed Neptune’s hazes at lower altitudes. At red and near-infrared wavelengths, two dark bands around −70° and 10° latitude were perfectly steady and originated in the upper two scale heights of the troposphere, either by decreased haze opacity or by an increased methane relative humidity. At blue wavelengths, a dark band between −60° and −30° latitude was most obvious during the early years, caused by dark aerosols below the 3-bar level with single scattering albedos reduced by ∼0.04, and this contrast was constant between 410 and 630 nm wavelength. The dark band decayed exponentially with a time constant of 5 ± 1 years, which can be explained by settling of the dark aerosols at a rate of 1 bar pressure difference per year. The other latitudes brightened with the same time constant but lower amplitudes. The only exception was a darkening event in the 15-30° latitude region between 1994 and 1996, which coincides with two dark spots observed in the same region during the same time period, the only dark spots seen since Voyager. The dark aerosols had a similar latitudinal distribution as the discrete clouds near the tropopause, although both were separated by four scale heights. Photometric analysis revealed a phase coefficient of 0.0028 ± 0.0010 mag/deg for the 0-2° phase-angle range observable from Earth. Neptune’s sub-Earth latitude varied by less than 3° throughout the observation period providing a data set with almost constant viewing geometry. The trends observed up to 2008 continued into 2010 based on images taken with the Wide Field Camera 3.  相似文献

Using KPNO helium 10830 Å synoptic charts of Carrington rotations 1716 through 1739, and by assembling a time sequence representing single latitude zone, rotational properties of coronal holes for five zones of latitudes (±10°, ±20° – ±40°, and ±40° – ±60°) have been examined. It seems that the rotation period of coronal holes is a function of latitude, thus reflecting differential rotation of coronal holes.  相似文献

From two sets of the spectroscopic observations covering a ten year period we have obtained 59 radial velocities of the chromospherically-active star HD 28591 = V492 Per. It is a G9III single-lined spectroscopic binary with a period of 21.2910 days and a circular orbit. Thev sini of 24.6 km s–1, results in a minimum radius 10.3R . We estimate a distance of 165 ± 40 pc and an orbital inclination of 65 ± 25 degrees. The secondary is probably a mid to late-type K dwarf. The star is brighter than the limiting magnitude of theBright Star Catalogue. The mean photometric and the orbital periods are identical within their uncertainties. Since the star fills a significant fraction of its Roche lobe, about 62%, the photometric light curve may be the result of starspots and a modest ellipticity effect.Visiting astronomer, Kitt Peak National Observatory, NOAO, operated by AURA, Inc., under contract with the NSF  相似文献

Nereid is a small irregular moon of Neptune that displays large-, moderate-, and small-amplitude photometric variations on both fast and slow time scales. The central mystery of Nereid is now to explain the physical mechanism of these unique brightness changes and why they change with time. To characterize Nereid's variability, we have been using the SMARTS telescopes on Cerro Tololo for synoptic monitoring from 1999 to 2006. We present a well-sampled photometric time series of 493 magnitudes on 246 nights mostly in the V-band. In combination with our earlier data (for 774 magnitudes over 362 nights), our 20-year data set is the most comprehensive for any small icy body in our Solar System. Our yearly light curves show that Nereid displays various types of behaviors: large amplitude brightenings and fadings (1987 to 1990); moderate-amplitude variation about the average phase curve (1993-1997, 2003, 2005), moderate-amplitude variation and systematically brighter by roughly one-quarter magnitude throughout the entire season (2004); and nearly constant light curves superimposed on a surprisingly large-amplitude opposition surge (1998, 1999, 2000, 2006). Other than in 2004, Nereid's variations were closely centered around a constant phase curve that is well fit with a Hapke model for the coherent backscattering opposition surge mechanism with angular scale of 0.7°±0.1°. In our entire data set from 1987-2006, we find no significant periodicity. We propose that the year-to-year changes in the variability of Nereid are caused by forced precession (caused by tidal forces from Neptune) on the spin axis of a nonspherical Nereid, such that cross-sectional areas and average albedos change as viewed from Earth.  相似文献

The differential rotation of the corona as indicated by coronal holes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The rotation of the corona can be determined either directly by using Doppler methods or indirectly by using tracers, i.e., structures within the corona. In this study the rotational characteristics of the corona are determined using coronal holes as tracers, for the period 1978–1991. The coronal data used here are from an atlas of coronal holes mapped in Hei 10830 data. A comparison is made between our results and previous determinations of the coronal rotation rate, e.g., by Sime (1986), using white-light K-coronameter observations, by Timothy, Krieger, and Vaiana (1975), using soft X-ray observations, and by Shelke and Pande (1985) and Navarro-Peralta and Sanchez-Ibarra (1994), using Hei 10830 data. For the atlas of coronal holes used in this study the nature of the coronal hole distributions in number and latitude, in yearly averages, has been determined. These distributions show that at solar minimum the polar coronal holes dominate and the few non-polar holes are confined to a narrow band near the equator. At solar maximum, however, mid-latitude coronal holes dominate, with a large spread in latitudes. Given these distributions we consider the differential rotation data only as an average over a solar cycle. This removes spurious effects caused by having only a small number of coronal holes contributing to the results, or by having a narrow latitude band for the observations, thus limiting the results to that narrow latitude band. By considering these coronal holes as tracers of the differential rotation we show that the mid-latitude corona rotates more rigidly than the photosphere, but still exhibits significant differential rotation, with an equatorial rate of 13.30 ± 0.04° day–1, and at 45° latitude a rate of 12.57 ± 0.13° day–1. These results are comparable, within errors, to the Sime (1986) results which have an equatorial rate of approximately 13.2 ± 0.2° day–1 and a rate of approximately 12.9 ± 0.3° day–1 at 45° latitude.  相似文献

We present the results of a long-term photometric monitoring of the young single main-sequence star HD134319. It shows short-term variability of the optical-band continuum flux with a period of 4.448 days. The variability is attributed to dark spots or spots groups unevenly distributed in longitude on the star's photosphere, whose visibility is modulated by the star's rotation. Maps of the photospheric spot pattern have been obtained with light curve inversion techniques based on the Maximum Entropy and the Tikhonov regularization criteria. The overall spot pattern shows evidence for two long-lasting active longitudes located about 180° apart, with a total area of at least 16% of the stellar surface (assuming an inclination of the stellar rotation axis of 90° on the line of sight). The longitude distribution of the spot pattern and its total area do not show any clear evidence for a long-term variation along the five years of observations. A comparison with recent mean field dynamo models is also addressed, suggesting a possible interpretation of such a behaviour. Singularity, spectral type, youth and a high level of photospheric and chromospheric activity make HD134319 a suitable proxy for studying the magnetic activity of the young Sun not far after its arrival on the zero age main sequence.  相似文献

Observations of Neptune were made in September 2009 with the Gemini-North Telescope in Hawaii, using the NIFS instrument in the H-band covering the wavelength range 1.477–1.803 μm. Observations were acquired in adaptive optics mode and have a spatial resolution of approximately 0.15–0.25″.The observations were analysed with a multiple-scattering retrieval algorithm to determine the opacity of clouds at different levels in Neptune’s atmosphere. We find that the observed spectra at all locations are very well fit with a model that has two thin cloud layers, one at a pressure level of ∼2 bar all over the planet and an upper cloud whose pressure level varies from 0.02 to 0.08 bar in the bright mid-latitude region at 20–40°S to as deep as 0.2 bar near the equator. The opacity of the upper cloud is found to vary greatly with position, but the opacity of the lower cloud deck appears remarkably uniform, except for localised bright spots near 60°S and a possible slight clearing near the equator.A limb-darkening analysis of the observations suggests that the single-scattering albedo of the upper cloud particles varies from ∼0.4 in regions of low overall albedo to close to 1.0 in bright regions, while the lower cloud is consistent with particles that have a single-scattering albedo of ∼0.75 at this wavelength, similar to the value determined for the main cloud deck in Uranus’ atmosphere. The Henyey-Greenstein scattering particle asymmetry of particles in the upper cloud deck are found to be in the range g ∼ 0.6–0.7 (i.e. reasonably strongly forward scattering).Numerous bright clouds are seen near Neptune’s south pole at a range of pressure levels and at latitudes between 60 and 70°S. Discrete clouds were seen at the pressure level of the main cloud deck (∼2 bar) at 60°S on three of the six nights observed. Assuming they are the same feature we estimate the rotation rate at this latitude and pressure to be 13.2 ± 0.1 h. However, the observations are not entirely consistent with a single non-evolving cloud feature, which suggests that the cloud opacity or albedo may vary very rapidly at this level at a rate not seen in any other giant-planet atmosphere.  相似文献

Investigation of sunspots, coronal lines intensity, flares and other solar and geophysical data have confirmed the fact that the 11-year cycle consists of two events (maxima) having different features.During the first maximum (it coincides in time with the maximum of the Wolf numbers) the solar activity increases in all heliographic latitudes but it is maximal in latitude 25° in each hemisphere. The far UV radiation and number of small spots, flares and geomagnetic disturbances with sudden commencements and without 27-day recurrences are maximum at this time.During the second maximum, which appears 2–3 years after the first one, the activity is maximal in latitudes ± 10°. At this time the biggest spots, big flares, aurora and geomagnetic disturbances with the gradual commencements and long series of 27-day recurrences appear. The variations of averaged 5303 and 6374 Å coronal line intensities may be interpreted as an increase of coronal density and temperature during the first maximum and a sharp decrease of density and temperature rise during the second one. The temperature during the second maximum is higher than that during the first one.The distribution of activity on time-latitude diagrams (so-called butterflies) is a result of superposition of two random distributions corresponding to the two maxima mentioned above.  相似文献
