The environmental effects of oil-based drilling mud cuttings have been evaluated using all the data available from monitoring around North Sea platforms. Beneath the platforms making extensive use of oil-based drilling muds the natural sediment is buried by cuttings and the hydrocarbon concentration 250 m from the platforms may be 1000 times background, but the concentration gradient is very steep and background levels are usually reached 2000–3000 m from the platform.The extent of the biological effects appear to be greater from the use of oil-based muds than from water-based muds. Beyond the area of physical smothering the effects of oil-based mud cuttings may be due to organic enrichment or to the toxicity of the aromatic fraction of the oil. Despite the large scale of inputs, in all the fields studied the major deleterious biological effects occurred within 500 m of the platform. Surrounding the area of major impact was a transition zone in which subtle biological effects could be detected as community parameters returned to normal, generally within 400–1000 m.The shape and extent of this zone varied and was largely determined by the current regime and scale of the drilling operation. Elevated hydrocarbon concentrations were detected beyond the areas of biological effects.  相似文献

A review of the acute and chronic effects of produced formation water (PFW), drilling fluids (muds) including oil-based cutting muds, water-based cutting muds, ester-based cutting muds and chemical additives, and crude oils associated with offshore oil and gas production was undertaken in relation to both temperate and tropical marine ecological processes. The main environmental effects are summarized, often in tabular form. Generally, the temporal and spatial scales of these studies, along with the large levels of inherent variation in natural environments, have precluded our ability to predict the potential long-term environmental impacts of the offshore oil and gas production industry. A series of critical questions regarding the environmental effects of the offshore oil and gas production industry that still remain unanswered are provided for future consideration.  相似文献

Based on aquifer performance tests, 13 out of 15 wells situated at the Mixed Waste Disposal (MWD) area located at the Savannah River site. South Carolina, exhibited high skin factors and low well efficiencies indicative of severely damaged wells. The use of damaged wells in aquifer testing can lead to inaccurate determinations of aquifer properties, and such wells are unusable in future remediation programs. Moreover, damaged wells can go dry during purging, thus compromising sample collection. Pump tests, chemical analyses, and biological investigations revealed that the poor well performance at MWD was attributable to calcite precipitation on the well screen and drilling mud in the filter pack. The calcite problem resulted from improper well installation, and the drilling mud in the filter pack was due to inadequate well development.
Experimental rehabilitation procedures employed on two wells, MWD 5A and 1A, included acidification, swabbing, introduction of surfactants, and surging. Treatment of the wells substantially improved well yields, skin factors, and well efficiencies. Moreover, well rehabilitation was determined to be a reasonable alternative to drilling new wells at the MWD wellfield.  相似文献

The effects of discharged drilling cuttings contaminated with oil-based drilling fluids on the macrobenthos surrounding several North Sea oil-production platforms have been well documented. Areas of biological effect ranging from highly modified benthic communities, through transitional zones to undisturbed zones have been identified and characterized. Results are presented from a series of studies at the Murchison oil field which indicate partial recovery of macrofaunal communities around the production platform after cuttings discharges had ceased. Eventual rates of recovery of affected macrobenthic communities around production platforms are discussed in terms of persistence of oil in the drilling cuttings and the rates of degradation of the oil and its toxic components.  相似文献

The Effect of Three Drilling Fluids on Ground Water Sample Chemistry   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Three monitoring wells were installed in borings that were constructed using water-based drilling fluids containing either (1) guar bean, (2) guar bean with breakdown additive, or (3) bentonite. These fluids were selected to observe their effect on the chemistry of subsequent water samples collected from the wells. The wells were installed to depths of 66 feet, 100.5 feet and 103 feet, respectively, in fine-to-medium sand and gravel outwash deposits near Antigo, Wisconsin. Drilling fluids were necessary to maintain an open borehole during well construction through strata containing cobbles and boulders.
The bentonite and guar drilling fluids caused temporarily elevated concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD) in ground water samples collected from the monitoring wells. Using standard development, purging and sampling procedures, elevated COD concentrations persisted for about 50 days for the well bored with the guar-with-additive fluid, 140 days for the bentonite well and 320 days for the guar well. Unfiltered ground water samples for all wells had greater concentrations of COD than samples filtered through a 0.45 micron filter. Sulfate concentrations also decreased with time in the guar-with-additive well and bentonite well, but not in the guar well.
The elevated COD concentrations are attributed to the large concentrations of oxidizable carbon present in the guar bean drilling fluid and in the organic polymers present in the bentonite drilling fluid. Well development and purging procedures, including borehole flushing, surging, bailing and/or chemically induced viscosity breakdown of the guar mud decreased the time before background conditions were achieved. Future research should evaluate the physical and geochemical interaction of different drilling fluid compositions with a variety of geologic matrices and drilling, well development and well purging techniques.  相似文献

To appreciate the impact of large-scale industrial operations on the marine environment requires a range of scientific studies which ideally should include physical, chemical and biological surveys of the various environmental compartments likely to be contaminated, linked with experiments designed to detect and quantify effects. More finely focused studies can then provide an evaluation of the impact. In relation to North Sea oil activities, this type of approach suggests that at present significant offshore contamination is found only in the sediments close to platforms using oil-based drilling muds.  相似文献

At 100 000 ppm, the suspended particulate and liquid phases of a reference drilling mud and a used production mud significantly increase the hydranth shedding proportion in the hydroid coelenterate Tubularia crocea after 48 h. At 10 000 ppm only the liquid phase of the synthetic drilling mud significantly increased hydranth shedding. At 1000 ppm the 3% iron and calcium forms of the five lignosulphonates tested were found to be toxic. Other organic constituents of drilling muds found to be toxic included, tannic acid (100 ppm), paraformaldehyde (1 ppb), and water-soluble fractions of crude oil and No. 2 fuel oil (approximately 20 ppm). Mercury, cadmium, copper, cobalt, zinc and nickel were found toxic at 100 ppm. Exposure to 0.1−0.001 ppm mercury, 1% WSF of crude oil, and 10 ppm cadmium resulted in a significant decrease in the hydranth shedding proportion. This reduction in hydranth shedding proportion may reflect hormesis, a stimulation of growth by low-level exposure to a pollutant, but cannot be conclusively demonstrated until growth measurements are made.  相似文献

The 24, 96, or 168h LC50s of four used drilling fluids or barite incorporated into sediment were determined in toxicity tests with lancelets (Branchiostoma caribaeum), a benthic chordate. Concurrent to LC50 determinations, EC50s were calculated from the number of lancelets that did not burrow into contaminated sediments. Observations of the burrowing behaviour allowed quantitation of effects after 24h exposures to each of the drilling fluids whereas lancelet mortality was sufficient to calculate 24h LC50s for only one drilling fluid. Drilling fluids were less toxic to lancelets when incorporated into sediments than to mysids (Mysidopsis bahia) or benthic invertebrate communities in water-column exposures.  相似文献

随钻测井是一种能在钻头钻进过程中通过安装在钻头附近的传感器实时获取和传输测井数据的技术.实时可靠高效的传输测井数据是随钻测井研究领域的关键问题.目前随钻测井系统普遍使用的测井数据传输方式是钻井液压力脉冲遥测传输.钻井液信道是一种长时延极低速单向无反馈删除信道,因此利用传统的差错控制方法无法在保障测井数据传输实时性的同时纠正信道噪声引起的实时测井数据传输错误.为此本文提出了一种基于压缩感知理论的随钻测井数据信道编码传输方法,该方法具有短码长线性编译码复杂度的优点.地面接收端通过压缩感知重构算法恢复井下测井数据,在保障测井数据传输实时性的同时使得地面施工人员能在随机删除信道条件下正确的获得全部井下实时测井数据.钻井现场真实测井数据编码实验表明,本文所提方法在不影响测井数据传输实时性的前提下大大提高了测井数据的抗信道删除能力,降低了由于信道删除带来的测井数据丢包率,而且允许测井施工人员根据实际钻井液信道状态灵活调整发送码率,以实现不同删除概率信道下的测井数据可靠传输.  相似文献

Erosion of mixed cohesive and noncohesive sediments is studied using the erosion test instrument SEDFlume. The sediment mixtures are composed of well-sorted quartz sand (0.25–0.5 mm) and one of the three used muds: kaolinite, kaolinite-bentonite and Mississippi River muds. The mud contents cover from 0 to 100%. The measured data of erosion rate and bed shear stress are used to examine the segmented linear, nonlinear, and exponential erosion models. The parameters of each erosion model are related to the physical properties of sediment mixtures, including clay fraction, mud fraction, mixture dry density, and mud dry density. It is found that the three models can fit well with the data, and their parameters have strong relations with the mud fraction and mud dry density, to a less extent with the clay fraction, but not with the mixture dry density.  相似文献

As a consequence of drilling and completion operations most wells have reduced permeability near the borehole (skin zone). This may result in a corresponding change of thermal conductivity of formations near the borehole. At the same time the mathematical models, which describe the process of thermal recovery of formations are based on the assumption that the thickness of the radius of heated zone (during circulation of the drilling mud) is significantly larger than the well radius (or skin zone). It is shown below that the radius of the heated zone (radius of investigation or radius of thermal influence) can be approximated by simple formulas. It is shown that for six field bottom-hole temperature surveys the radius of thermal influence (RTI) is too small, and for this reason, the duration of the drilling mud circulation period should increased.  相似文献

Flocculation settling characteristics of mud: sand mixtures   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1  
When natural muds become mixed with sandy sediments in estuaries, it has a direct effect on the flocculation process and resultant sediment transport regime. Much research has been completed on the erosion and consolidation of mud/sand mixtures, but very little is known quantitatively about how mixed sediments interact whilst in suspension, particularly in terms of flocculation. This paper presents the settling velocity findings from a recent laboratory study which examined the flocculation dynamics for three different mud/sand mixtures at different concentrations (0.2–5 g.l?1) and turbulent shear stresses (0.06–0.9 Pa) in a mini-annular flume. The low intrusive video-based Laboratory Spectral Flocculation Characteristics instrument was used to determine floc/aggregate properties (e.g., size, settling velocity, density and mass) for each population. Settling data was assessed in terms of macrofloc (>160 μm) and microfloc (<160 μm) settling parameters: Wsmacro and Wsmicro, respectively. For pure muds, the macroflocs are regarded as the most dominant contributors to the total depositional flux. The parameterised settling data indicates that by adding more sand to a mud/sand mixture, the fall velocity of the macrofloc fraction slows and the settling velocity of microflocs quickens. Generally, a mainly sandy suspension comprising 25% mud and 75% sand (25M:75S), will produce resultant Wsmacro which are slower than Wsmicro. The quickest Wsmicro appears to consistently occur at a higher level of turbulent shear stress (τ?~?0.6 Pa) than both the macrofloc and microfloc fractions from suspensions of pure natural muds. Flocculation within a more cohesively dominant muddy-sand suspension (i.e., 75M:25S) produced macroflocs which fell at similar speeds (±10%) to pure mud suspensions at both low (200 mg l?1) and intermediate (1 g?l?1) concentrations at all shear stress increments. Also, low sand content suspensions produced Wsmacro values that were faster than the Wsmicro rates. In summary, the experimental results of the macrofloc and microfloc settling velocities have demonstrated that flocculation is an extremely important factor with regards to the depositional behaviour of mud/sand mixtures, and these factors must be considered when modelling mixed sediment transport in the estuarine or marine environment.  相似文献

There exist different response characteristics in the resistivity measurements of dual laterolog (DLL) and logging while drilling (LWD) electromagnetic wave propagation logging in highly deviated and horizontal wells due to the difference in their measuring principles. In this study, we first use the integral equation method simulated the response characteristics of LWD resistivity and use the three dimensional finite element method (3D-FEM) simulated the response characteristics of DLL resistivity in horizontal wells, and then analyzed the response differences between the DLL and LWD resistivity. The comparative analysis indicated that the response differences may be caused by different factors such as differences in the angle of instrument inclination, anisotropy, formation interface, and mud intrusion. In the interface, the curves of the LWD resistivity become sharp with increases in the deviation while those of the DLL resistivity gradually become smooth. Both curves are affected by the anisotropy although the effect on DLL resistivity is lower than the LWD resistivity. These differences aid in providing a reasonable explanation in the horizontal well. However, this can also simultaneously lead to false results. At the end of the study, we explain the effects of the differences in the interpretation of the horizontal well based on the results and actual data analysis.  相似文献

Two years after the Prestige oil spill (POS) an assessment of the effects on benthic fauna was carried out using the data obtained in five multidisciplinary surveys. Otter trawl, beam trawl, suprabenthic sled and box corer were used to study the main benthic compartments, along eight transects perpendicular to the coastline. Beam trawl was also employed to quantify the amount of tar aggregates on the continental shelf. No significant correlations between tar aggregates and species richness, biomass and diversity of benthic communities were found. This result was corroborated when the role of depth, season, latitude and sediment characteristics was examined by canonical ordination, in which POS-related variables had low influence on spatial distribution patterns. Depth and sediment grain diameter profoundly influence epibenthic communities. Sediment organic content is a third key variable for the infaunal, suprabenthic and lower-sized epibenthic communities, but not for the larger epibenthic communities. Nevertheless, a decrease in the densities of several epibenthic indicators was detected the first year after spill, followed by a noteworthy recovery in 2004. Non-macroscopic toxicity and some oceanographic agents are suggested as possible causes of these shifts.  相似文献

The resonant sonic drilling method offers unique capabilities to the environmental restoration market. By using a drill head that imparts high-frequency, high-force vibrations into a steel drill pipe, continuous, relatively undisturbed cores can be taken through virtually any formation. The resonant sonic method requires no mud, air, water, or other circulating medium for penetration: drills very fast; easily drills at any angle through formations such as rock, clay, sand, boulders, permafrost, or glacial till; and yields no cuttings in the drilling process. Case histories of projects using the method demonstrate excellent results but also indicate several problem areas with the method in its present state. Expanding research efforts to further develop the resonant sonic drilling method should help solve current drawbacks, and could produce a drilling technology for environmental work that significantly changes the way monitoring wells are drilled and constructed.  相似文献

崖南区是琼东南盆地已证实的富生烃区,几口已钻井都已证实主要目的层段为高压地层,利用常规的压力预测方法预测新钻井的压力会出现较大的误差.若是从区域应力角度入手预测新钻井的压力误差会减小,其预测基础为岩性模型.对于已开发的油气田,利通常规的岩性建模方法可以建立较好的岩性模型;但是对于崖南区而言,由于地震资料品质不是很好,同时本区钻井较少,很难通过常规的建模方法建立岩性模型,所以本区研究重点是如何利用少井建立岩性模型.通过研究认为若完成崖南区的岩性建模必须改进建模流程,改进的岩性建模流程克服了常规岩性建模在崖南区存在的问题,主要有三方面的优点:1)不采用相模型约束岩性建模,解决了由于研究区相模型划相较粗很难约束岩性模型建立的问题;2)属性模型控制岩性模型的横向变化趋势,解决了几种常规属性与岩性间没有较好关系的问题;3)利用泥质含量结合岩性资料建立岩性体,得到的岩性模型比较接近实际情况.C井钻前完成岩性模型建立,利用C井井点位置提取岩性数据与本井钻后录井岩性数据对比,发现预测岩性与录井岩性的吻合程度很高,证明改进的岩性建模思路在崖南少井区可用.  相似文献

Among rheological models for estimating the rate of dissipation of non-breaking waves in muddy seabeds, those representing viscoelastic and poroelastic behaviors are used widely. In that regard, the dependence of the wave attenuation coefficient derived from basic rheological representations of mud behavior is examined on a cursory basis. For wave attenuation due to viscoelastic muds, results based on a semi-analytical model incorporating the effects of typically thin mud layers are summarized. This and an existing model for poroelastic beds are tested against selective laboratory data. Relying on these tests, it is emphasized that fluid-like mud should be modeled as a viscoelastic fluid medium, and that only non-fluid beds can be modeled as poroelastic media. Mechanisms for energy dissipation depend on bed compactness specified by the solids volume fraction, porosity or density, and on a characteristic Péclet number defined in terms of particle size, permeability and wave frequency. Due to the role of the latter parameter, for simulation of wave attenuation the chosen rheological model for a bed of given compactness must be applicable over the expected range of wave frequency.  相似文献

Large quantities of waste fly-ash from coal-fired power stations are dumped in the sea, where the ash settles on the sea bed. The physical and chemical characteristics of the ash have been assessed in relation to the marine benthic environment. The material acts as a fine mud substrate, of low porosity and permeability, chemically analogous to natural mud, but with no organic content for faunistic exploitation.  相似文献

Interactions between physical and biological processes in intertidal sediments have been the focus of studies in the framework of the ECOFLAT project. Process studies were focused on the Molenplaat, a 1.5 km2 intertidal flat in the Westerschelde estuary, The Netherlands. Distinct spatial patterns in the biological community on the flat were found and related to patterns in bottom shear stress as derived from a hydrodynamic model. Based on these survey results five stations were selected with contrasting sediment composition and benthic communities.Long-term net sedimentation of mainly sand was deduced from radionuclide profiles. Sedimentation of mud on the surface of part of the intertidal flat was shown to be a seasonally cyclic process, with a magnitude sufficient to significantly affect the mud balance of the estuary. Measurements of erodability as a function of tidal current showed a biological control on this variable. Benthic microalgae stabilise the sediment surface, whereas the benthic macrofauna has a destabilising effect.Food web studies show that the contrasting biological communities (microbenthos, meiobenthos, macrobenthos) at muddy and sandy sites have substantial differences in the quantitative aspects of their food web. Turnover of microalgae is much lower at muddy than at sandy sites, and this is mostly related to a lower grazing pressure. It is hypothesised that high mud content decreases the availability of benthic microalgae to grazers.We demonstrate a positive feedback between benthic microalgae and mud sedimentation which may lead to the existence of different stable states. This may explain the existence of relatively sharp boundaries and strong community contrasts in the presence of weak and smooth environmental gradients.  相似文献
