We have compiled a sample of galaxies whose flux density is higher at 12 microns (f12) than at 25 microns (f25). It is argued thatf12 >f25 effectively selects quiescent galaxies which are less active in infrared, radio, and optical bands than other types of normal galaxies. Moreover galaxies withf12 >f25 do not exhibit the well-known relations that normal galaxies show between far-infrared parameters, for example, the negative correlation betweenf12/f25 andf60/f100. These galaxies also show different far-infrared and radio properties. In our opinion this sample of quiescent galaxies is suitable for use as a control sample when properties of more active galaxies are discussed. It may also be used in modeling galaxies with active star formation or an active nucleus.Translated fromAstrofizika, Vol. 38, No. 3, 1995.  相似文献

The 395 late-type spiral galaxies brighter than 15m in r-band are selected from the Data Release 2 of Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the colormagnitude relations of these galaxies and their disks are investigated. It is found that the colors g − r, r − z and g − z of these galaxies and their disks are strongly correlated with the r-band absolute magnitudes, i.e., the more luminous galaxies (or disks) have the redder colors than the less luminous galaxies (or disks). And the correlation of galaxies is stronger than that of their disks.  相似文献

Results from a statistical study of Kazarian galaxies and the objects surrounding them are presented. It is shown that: (1) the sample of Kazarian galaxies up to 16m.0 is complete. (2) Roughly 35.7% of the Kazarian galaxies are members of clusters, 14.0% of groups, and 13.6% of binary systems, while 36.7% are single galaxies. (3) Of the 580 Kazarian galaxies, roughly 61.2% are infrared, 8.8% radio, and 2.8% x-ray sources. (4) The relative numbers of Kazarian galaxies for complete samples of I, R, and X in the different groups are systematically higher than the corresponding numbers for samples of all Kazarian galaxies.  相似文献

We present the results of a search for companions around the isolated galaxies from the 2MIG catalog. Among 3227 2MIG galaxies we detected 125 objects with a total of 214 neighbors having radial velocity differences of ΔV < 500 km/s and projected separations of R p < 500 kpc relative to the 2MIG galaxies. The median luminosity of the companions is 1/25 of the luminosity of catalog galaxies, which has little effect on the dynamic isolation of the latter. The median ratio of the orbital mass to the K-luminosity determined from 60 companions of E and S0 2MIG galaxies, 63M /L , is significantly greater than that found from the spiral galaxy companions (17M /L ). We note that a fraction of 2MIG galaxies with companions may be a part of low-contrast diffuse structures: clouds and filaments.  相似文献

A catalogue is given of the 179 known galaxies within 10 Mpc. The inclusion of a galaxy depends on its redshift (v0 ≤ 500 km s−1) or, in the case of 7 dwarf galaxies, on the fact that their distances are known to be small. The catalogue contains in addition 52 more distant galaxies with v0 ≤ 500 km s−1: 50 are bona fide Virgo cluster members and 2 are members of the Leo group. Positions, types, absorption-corrected luminosities, and velocities are given for the catalogue galaxies. The catalogue is believed to be nearly complete for galaxies brighter than ∽ – 18m.5, but it contains also many considerably fainter galaxies. The galaxies within 10 Mpc form the Local Group with 28 members and seven additional groups with a total of 92 known members. 59 galaxies (33%) do not seem to belong to any group.  相似文献

The distributionsf(z) of the redshifts for active galaxies (Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies, and quasars) have been studied. Some statistically-significant maxima and minima are observed in the distributionsf(z) for these objects. The significance of peaks and gaps increases for the brighter objects, for which the samples are more complete. The clustering of the Seyfert galaxies is significantly different from that of the nearby normal galaxies. The distributionf(z) for the radio galaxies is similar to the analogous distribution for the galaxy clusters. Three of the five peaks in the distributionf(z) for the radio quasars may be caused by the selection effects. Two peaks within the intervalsz (0.5, 0.7) and (1.0, 1.1) are probably real. The corresponding scales of the QSO clustering along the line-of-sight are about 100h –1 Mpc (h is the Hubble constant in the units of 75 km s–1 Mpc–1). The possibility of some global quasi-periodical cycles for the processes of activity is discussed. The period of a cycle for the Seyfert and radio galaxies is about 1×108 years that corresponds to the distances of about 30h –1 Mpc between the shells.  相似文献

We present the results of our analysis of the frequencies of galaxies with tidal tails and M51-type galaxies in several deep fields of the Hubble Space Telescope (HDF-N, HDF-S, HUDF, GOODS, GEMS). In total, we have found about seven hundred interacting galaxies at redshifts z ≤ 1.5 in these fields. At z ≤ 0.7, the observed space densities of galaxies with tidal structures and M51-type galaxies have been found to increase as (1 + z) m , where m ≈ 2.6. According to our estimates, over the last 6–7 Gyr, i.e., at z ≤ 0.7, about a third of the galaxies with M(B) ≤ −18 m must have undergone strong gravitational perturbations and mergers and ∼1/10−1/5 of the galaxies have swallowed relatively low-mass nearby satellites typical of M51-type galaxies. The possible decrease in the time scale on which a distant galaxy appears peculiar with growing z can increase considerably the estimated rate of mergers.  相似文献

Until recently far infrared (FIR) observations of galaxies were limited to about a dozen bright and/or active galaxies. New photometric data has become available from Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) on 33 galaxies (most of them faint) from IRAS Circular Nos. 1, 2, and 3 The FIR spectra of these galaxies are similar. The far infrared fluxF FIR in the wavelength interval 9–118 m of the brighter galaxies is seen to be correlated with the integrated optical magnitudeB T 0 . The 12 and 25 m fluxes of these galaxies exhibit the same dependence onB T 0 as the 10 and 21 m fluxes from Seyferts and other emission-line galaxies. This suggests that the galaxies detected by IRAS are some type of active galaxies in accord with the high percentage of these galaxies predicted by Lock and Rowan-Robinson (1983).  相似文献

We present a catalog of 520 most isolated nearby galaxies with angular velocities V LG < 3500 km/s, covering the entire sky. This population of “space orphans” makes up 4.8% among 10 900 galaxies with measured radial velocities. We describe the isolation criterion used to select our sample, called the “Local Orphan Galaxies”(LOG), and discuss their basic optical and HI properties. A half of the LOG catalog is occupied by the Sdm, Im and Ir morphological type galaxies without a bulge. The median ratio M gas/M star in the LOG galaxies exceeds 1. The distribution of the catalog galaxies on the sky looks uniform with some signatures of a weak clustering on the scale of about 0.5 Mpc. The LOG galaxies are located in the regions where the mean local density of matter is approximately 50 times lower than the mean global density. We indicate a number of LOG galaxies with distorted structures, which may be the consequence of interaction of isolated galaxies with massive dark objects.  相似文献

Using two volume-limited Main galaxy samples of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 6 (SDSS DR6), we have explored the difference of the environmental dependence of u-, g-, r-, i-, and z-band luminosities between galaxies above and below the value of M r*. It turns out that in the luminous volume-limited sample, all the five band luminosities strongly correlate with local environments. Because the u-band luminosity of galaxies still strongly depends on local environments in the faint volumelimited sample, we conclude that M r* is not an important characteristic parameter for the environmental dependence of the u-band luminosity. It is worth noting that for the u-band, the subsample at low density has a higher proportion of luminous galaxies and a lower proportion of faint galaxies than the one at high density, which is opposite to widely accepted conclusion: luminous galaxies exist preferentially in the densest regions of the universe, but faint galaxies are located preferentially in low density regions. Our results show that the environmental dependence of luminosity is not a single trend in different luminosity regions and for different bands.  相似文献

To investigate the environmental dependence of u ‐, g ‐, r ‐, i ‐, and z ‐band luminosities, we perform comparative studies of luminosity distributions between galaxy members of compact groups (CGs) and isolated galaxies. It is found that for the r, i, and z bands isolated galaxies have a higher proportion of faint galaxies and a lower proportion of luminous galaxies than galaxy members of CGs, but for the u band an opposite trend is observed. The correlation between the g ‐band luminosity and the environment has different trends in different luminosity regions (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)  相似文献

In order to see whether the study of redshift distribution in different classes of extragalactic objects, suspected of belonging to different phases in the evolutionary sequence of galaxies, helps in arriving at a possible picture of the evolutionary sequence of galaxies, histograms have been plotted between the number and the redshift for each of the five classes of extragalactic objects, namely, the QSOs, N-galaxies, Seyfert galaxies, radio galaxies and normal galaxies. It is found that: (i) the highest peaks in the five histograms occur at distinctly different redshifts in the order (Z peak)QSOs>(Z peak)N-galaxies>(Z peak)Seyfert galaxies>(Z peak)radio galaxies> (Z peak)normal galaxies and (ii) sufficient overlap occurs in the redshift ranges of (a) QSOs and N-galaxies, (b) N-galaxies and Seyfert galaxies, (c) Seyfert galaxies and radio galaxies and (d) radio galaxies and normal galaxies. These facts suggest that the extragalactic objects might be evolving in the sequence: QSOsN-galaxiesSeyfert galaxiesradio galaxiesnormal galaxies. Other independent evidences in support of such an evolutionary sequence have been given. Finally, various aspects of the problem associated with the picture of the evolutionary sequence of galaxies have been critically examined.  相似文献

We present the first results of our X‐shooter observations for a sample of dwarf (–17 < MB < –15) galaxies in nearby (0.04 < z < 0.07) galaxy clusters. This luminosity range is fundamental to trace the evolution of higher‐z star‐forming cluster galaxies down to the present day, and to explore the galaxy scaling relations of early‐type galaxies over a broad mass range. Thanks to high resolution and availability of several lines we can derive the velocity dispersion of the galaxies in this range of luminosities and we begin the construction of the fundamental plane of faint early‐type galaxies (© 2011 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The results of morphological and colorimetrical investigation of several Markarian galaxies are presented. In most cases the nuclei of galaxies have U–B and B–V smaller than the integral values of the galaxies. By the colours of its nucleus Markarian 185 must be a normal galaxy. 55% of the galaxies in the sample are spirals of both types.  相似文献

The morphologies of the 96 dwarf (M(B) -17m) galaxies in the Markarian catalog are determined from the digitized Schmidt plates obtained for the construction of the Hubble Space Telescope Guide Star Catalog. The fraction of double nucleus galaxies within the dwarf Markarian galaxies is determined to be twice that found for all galaxies in the Markarian catalog. In addition to the 12 previously known cases, four definite and two probable galaxies with double nuclei are identified. The fraction of dwarf Markarian galaxies with bright star forming regions is found to be twice that of Virgo cluster dwarf galaxies. No Elliptical galaxies are found in the sample. Galaxies with blue compact dwarf and S0 morphologies are more often found to contain unresolved regions of UV excess emission. Dwarf Markarian galaxies with different morphological structures and spectral classes are found to have similar FIR properties.  相似文献

We study the mass-radius relationship for aggregates of galaxies, viz. binaries, small groups and clusters. The data are subjected to a simple best-fit analysis similar to the one carried out earlier for individual field galaxies. The analysis shows that: (i) The data on binary galaxies are consistent with the assumption that binaries are just two galaxies, each with an individual isothermal (M ∫R) dark matter halo, moving under the mutual gravitational attraction, (ii) The data on the groups of galaxies are too scattered to obey a single power-law relation of the formM = kR n with any degree of reliability, (iii) The data on groups and clusters fit better with a law of the formM = AR 3 +BR. This form suggests the existence of two components in dark matter—one which is clustered around the galaxies (M ∫R) and another which is distributed smoothly (M ∫R 3 ). The smooth distributions becomes significant only at scales ≥ 1 Mpc and hence does not affect binaries significantly. We briefly discuss the theoretical implications of this analysis  相似文献

The radial velocities are measured for 45 galaxies located in the neighborhoods of 29 likely isolated galaxies in a new catalog. We find that about 85% of these galaxies actually are well isolated objects. 4% of nearby galaxies with V LG < 3500 km/s are this kind of cosmic "orphan" Translated from Astrofizika, Vol. 52, No. 2, pp. 203–210 (May 2009).  相似文献

We discuss observations of the first galaxies, within cosmic reionization, at centimeter and millimeter wavelengths. We present a summary of current observations of the host galaxies of the most distant QSOs (z∼6). These observations reveal the gas, dust, and star formation in the host galaxies on kpc-scales. These data imply an enriched ISM in the QSO host galaxies within 1 Gyr of the big bang, and are consistent with models of coeval supermassive black hole and spheroidal galaxy formation in major mergers at high redshift. Current instruments are limited to studying truly pathologic objects at these redshifts, meaning hyper-luminous infrared galaxies (L FIR ∼1013 L ). ALMA will provide the one to two orders of magnitude improvement in millimeter astronomy required to study normal star forming galaxies (i.e. Ly-α emitters) at z∼6. ALMA will reveal, at sub-kpc spatial resolution, the thermal gas and dust—the fundamental fuel for star formation—in galaxies into cosmic reionization.  相似文献

analysis of new X-ray and optical data confirms that the X-ray luminosityL x of a cluster of galaxies is strongly dependent on its richness. The radio powerP 1445 of clusters at 1445 MHz is independent of richness, but is greater on the average for clusters with dominant cD galaxies than for those withou. The radio emission depends on the activity of one of the brightest galaxies; dominant cD galaxies are often responsible for radio emission, especially if they have double or multiple nuclei. For a given richness, high values ofL x andP 1445 sometimes occur together, but no strict correlation betweenL x andP 1445 exists. Possible tests of thermal-bremsstrahlung and inverse-Compton theories for the X-ray emission are mentioned.  相似文献

Algebraic expressions are obtained for the interaction potential energy of a pair of galaxies in which one is disk shaped and the other spherical. The density distribution in the disk galaxy is represented by a polynomial in ascending powers of the distance from the centre of the disk while the density distribution in the spherical galaxy is represented by the superposition of spherical polytropes of integral indices. The basic functions required for obtaining the interaction potential energy of a coplanar disk-sphere pair of galaxies are tabulated. The forces of attraction between a coplanar disk-sphere pair of galaxies are shown graphically for two density models of disk and spherical galaxies. An overlapping coplanar disk-sphere pair of galaxies attract just like two mass-points at a certain separation,r c, of their centres. The force of attraction is less than that of two mass-points having masses equal to the masses of the two galaxies, if the separation of the centres is less thanr c, and greater if the separation is greater thanr c.For a typical coplanar disk-sphere pair of galaxies (the density of the disk is represented by Model II and of the sphere by a polytropic indexn=4) of equal radii, we note the following. At a separation of 0.79R, R being the common radius of the two galaxies, the force of attraction between the pair is the same as if the entire mass of each galaxy is concentrated at its centre. The mass-point model for the two galaxies will overestimate the force of attraction by more than a factor of 10 if the separation is less than 0.36R. For separation greater than the radii of the galaxies the mass-point model will underestimate the force but the departure in this case is less than 33%.  相似文献
