Based on the Hilbert–Huang spectral analysis, a method is proposed to identify multi‐degree‐of‐freedom (MDOF) linear systems using measured free vibration time histories. For MDOF systems, the normal modes have been assumed to exist. In this method, the measured response data, which are polluted by noises, are first decomposed into modal responses using the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) approach with intermittency criteria. Then, the Hilbert transform is applied to each modal response to obtain the instantaneous amplitude and phase angle time histories. A linear least‐square fit procedure is proposed to identify the natural frequency and damping ratio from the instantaneous amplitude and phase angle for each modal response. Based on a single measurement of the free vibration time history at one appropriate location, natural frequencies and damping ratios can be identified. When the responses at all degrees of freedom are measured, the mode shapes and the physical mass, damping and stiffness matrices of the structure can be determined. The applications of the proposed method are illustrated using three linear systems with different dynamic characteristics. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that the proposed system identification method yields quite accurate results, and it offers a new and effective tool for the system identification of linear structures in which normal modes exist. A method for parametric system identification of classically damped linear system in frequency domain is adopted and extended for non‐classically damped linear systems subjected up to six components of earthquake ground motions. This method is able to work in multi‐input/multi‐output (MIMO) case. The response of a two‐degree‐of‐freedom model with non‐classical damping, excited by one‐component earthquake ground motion, is simulated and used to verify the proposed system identification method in the single‐input/multi‐output case. Also, the records of a 10 storey real building during the Northridge earthquake is used to verify the proposed system identification method in the MIMO case. In this case, at first, a single‐input/multi‐output assumption is considered for the system and modal parameters are identified, then other components of earthquake ground motions are added, respectively, and the modal parameters are identified again. This procedure is repeated until all four components of earthquake ground motions which are measured at the base level of the building are included in the identification process. The results of identification of real building show that consideration of non‐classical damping and inclusion of the multi‐components effect of earthquake ground motions can improve the least‐squares match between the finite Fourier transforms of recorded and calculated acceleration responses. This paper presents a formulation for estimation of the frequency and damping of a soil‐structure interaction system based on the classical modal analysis and solving the system eigenvalue problem. Without loss of generality, the structure is represented by a single degree of freedom oscillator, while the soil effects are included through impedance functions for in‐plane motion of a 2D rigid foundation. For the results presented in this paper, the impedance functions were computed by the indirect boundary element method for a rectangular foundation embedded in a soil layer over elastic bedrock. The study shows that the classical modal‐analysis approach works well, with the exception of squat, stiff structures, even though the impedance functions are frequency‐dependent and the soil‐structure interaction system does not possess normal modes. The study also shows that system frequency and damping are independent of the wave passage effects, contrary to findings of some previous studies, and that the site conditions, represented by the soil‐layer thickness and stiffness contrast between bedrock and soil layer, have significant influences on both system frequency and system damping. Finally, the paper examines the accuracy of some of the simple methods for estimation of these two system parameters and comments on some conflicting conclusions of previous studies about the effects of foundation embedment.  相似文献

The dynamic behaviour of two adjacent single‐degree‐of‐freedom (SDOF) structures connected with a viscous damper is studied under base acceleration. The base acceleration is modelled as harmonic excitation as well as stationary white‐noise random process. The governing equations of motion of the connected system are derived and solved for relative displacement and absolute acceleration responses of connected structures. The response of structures is found to be reduced by connecting with a viscous damper having appropriate damping. For undamped SDOF structures, the closed‐form expressions for optimum damping of viscous damper for minimum steady state as well as minimum mean square relative displacement and absolute acceleration of either of the connected SDOF structures are derived. The optimum damper damping is found to be functions of mass and frequency ratio of two connected structures. Further, numerical results had indicated that the damping of the connected structures does not have noticeable effects on the optimum damper damping and the corresponding optimized response. This implies that the derived closed‐form expressions for optimum damper damping of undamped structures can also be used in practical applications for damped structures. An iterative method is presented to compute the transfer function matrix of combined primary–secondary systems for seismic response analysis. It accounts for non‐proportional damping and dynamic interaction of the combined system. A closed form sequence is developed for the iterative computation of the transfer function matrix. Such sequence is assembled using independently the real classical mode frequencies, shapes and damping ratios of the primary system, and the natural frequency and critical damping ratio of the SDOF secondary system. The necessary and sufficient condition for convergence of the sequence is given in the paper. The method is illustrated through a couple of examples, including one of an appendix connected to a multi‐storey shear building. Convergence of the method is thoroughly analysed and peak responses are obtained using a spectral density function approach. Copyright © 2005 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In real‐time hybrid simulations (RTHS) that utilize explicit integration algorithms, the inherent damping in the analytical substructure is generally defined using mass and initial stiffness proportional damping. This type of damping model is known to produce inaccurate results when the structure undergoes significant inelastic deformations. To alleviate the problem, a form of a nonproportional damping model often used in numerical simulations involving implicit integration algorithms can be considered. This type of damping model, however, when used with explicit integration algorithms can require a small time step to achieve the desired accuracy in an RTHS involving a structure with a large number of degrees of freedom. Restrictions on the minimum time step exist in an RTHS that are associated with the computational demand. Integrating the equations of motion for an RTHS with too large of a time step can result in spurious high‐frequency oscillations in the member forces for elements of the structural model that undergo inelastic deformations. The problem is circumvented by introducing the parametrically controllable numerical energy dissipation available in the recently developed unconditionally stable explicit KR‐α method. This paper reviews the formulation of the KR‐α method and presents an efficient implementation for RTHS. Using the method, RTHS of a three‐story 0.6‐scale prototype steel building with nonlinear elastomeric dampers are conducted with a ground motion scaled to the design basis and maximum considered earthquake hazard levels. The results show that controllable numerical energy dissipation can significantly eliminate spurious participation of higher modes and produce exceptional RTHS results. A wavelet‐based stochastic formulation has been presented in this paper for the seismic analysis of a base‐isolated structural system which is modelled as a two‐degree‐of‐freedom (2‐DOF) system. The ground motion has been modelled as a non‐stationary process (both in amplitude and frequency) by using modified Littlewood–Paley basis wavelets. The proposed formulation is based on replacing the non‐linear system by an equivalent linear system with time‐dependent damping properties. The expressions of the instantaneous damping and the power spectral density function (PSDF) of the superstructure response have been obtained in terms of the functionals of input wavelet coefficients. The proposed formulation has been validated by simulating a ground motion process. The effect of the frequency non‐stationarity on the non‐linear response has also been studied in detail, and it has been clearly shown how ignoring the frequency non‐stationarity in the ground motion leads to inaccurate non‐linear response calculations. Numerical simulations of a single‐degree‐of‐freedom (SDOF) structure, rigidly supporting a tuned liquid damper (TLD) and subjected to both real and artificially generated earthquake ground motions, show that a properly designed TLD can significantly reduce the structure's response to these motions. The TLD is a rigid, rectangular tank with shallow water in it. Its fundamental linear sloshing frequency is tuned to the structure's natural frequency. The TLD is more effective in reducing structural response as the ground excitation level increases. This is because it then dissipates more energy due to sloshing and wave breaking. A larger water‐depth to tank‐length ratio than previous studies suggested, which still falls within the constraint of shallow water theory, is shown to be more suitable for excitation levels expected in strong earthquake motions. A larger water‐mass to structure‐mass ratio is shown to be required for a TLD to remain equally effective as structural damping increases. Furthermore, the reduction in response is seen to be fairly insensitive to the bandwidth of the ground motion but is dependent on the structure's natural frequency relative to the significant ground frequencies. Finally, a practical approach is suggested for the design of a TLD to control earthquake response. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

There is no consensus at the present time regarding an appropriate approach to model viscous damping in nonlinear time‐history analysis of base‐isolated buildings because of uncertainties associated with quantification of energy dissipation. Therefore, in this study, the effects of modeling viscous damping on the response of base‐isolated reinforced concrete buildings subjected to earthquake ground motions are investigated. The test results of a reduced‐scale three‐story building previously tested on a shaking table are compared with three‐dimensional finite element simulation results. The study is primarily focused on nonlinear direct‐integration time‐history analysis, where many different approaches of modeling viscous damping, developed within the framework of Rayleigh damping are considered. Nonlinear direct‐integration time‐history analysis results reveal that the damping ratio as well as the approach used to model damping has significant effects on the response, and quite importantly, a damping ratio of 1% is more appropriate in simulating the response than a damping ratio of 5%. It is shown that stiffness‐proportional damping, where the coefficient multiplying the stiffness matrix is calculated from the frequency of the base‐isolated building with the post‐elastic stiffness of the isolation system, provides reasonable estimates of the peak response indicators, in addition to being able to capture the frequency content of the response very well. Furthermore, nonlinear modal time‐history analyses using constant as well as frequency‐dependent modal damping are also performed for comparison purposes. It was found that for nonlinear modal time‐history analysis, frequency‐dependent damping, where zero damping is assigned to the frequencies below the fundamental frequency of the superstructure for a fixed‐base condition and 5% damping is assigned to all other frequencies, is more appropriate, than 5% constant damping. The classical response spectrum method continues to be the most popular approach for designing base‐isolated buildings, therefore avoiding computationally expensive nonlinear time‐history analyses. In this framework, a new method for the seismic analysis and design of building structures with base isolation system (BIS) is formulated and numerically validated, which enables one to overcome the main shortcomings of existing techniques based on the response spectrum method. The main advantages are the following: first, reduced computational effort with respect to an exact complex‐valued modal analysis, which is obtained through a transformation of coordinates in two stages, both involving real‐valued eigenproblems; second, effective representation of the damping, which is pursued by consistently defining different viscous damping ratios for the modes of vibration of the coupled BIS‐superstructure dynamic system; and third, ease of use, because a convenient reinterpretation of the combination coefficients leads to a novel damping‐adjusted combination rule, in which just a single response spectrum is required for the reference value of the viscous damping ratio. The proposed approach is specifically intended for design situations where (i) the dynamic behaviour of seismic isolators can be linearised and (ii) effects of nonproportional damping, as measured by modal coupling indexes, are negligible in the BIS‐superstructure assembly.

A trilinear model is used to simulate the seismic resisting mechanism of a single‐degree‐of‐freedom friction‐damped system to reflect the situation in which both dampers and frame members lose their elastic resistance. The seismic response of the friction‐damped system is normalized with respect to the response of its corresponding linear system by an approach that incorporates a credible equivalent linearization method, a damping reduction rule and the algebraic specification of the design spectrum. The resulting closed‐form solutions obtained for the normalized response are then used to define a force modification factor for friction‐damped systems. This force modification factor, together with the condensation procedure for multi‐degree‐of‐freedom structures, enables the establishment of a quasi‐static design procedure for friction‐damped structures, which is intended for the benefit and use of structural practitioners. A curve‐fitting technique is employed to develop an explicit expression for the force modification factor used with the proposed design procedure; it is shown that this simplification results in satisfactory accuracy. Finally, a design example is given to illustrate the validation of the proposed design procedure. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The effects of soil‐structure interaction (SSI) are often studied using two‐dimensional (2D) or axisymmetric three‐dimensional (3D) models to avoid the high cost of the more realistic, fully 3D models, which require 2 to 3 orders of magnitude more computer time and storage. This paper analyzes the error and presents correction factors for system frequency, system damping, and peak amplitude of structural response computed using impedances for linear in‐plane 2D models with rectangular foundations, embedded in uniform or layered half‐space. They are computed by comparison with results for 3D rectangular foundations with the same vertical cross‐section and different aspect ratios. The structure is represented by a single degree‐of‐freedom oscillator. Correction factors are presented for a range of the model parameters. The results show that in‐plane 2D approximations overestimate the SSI effects, exaggerating the frequency shift, the radiation damping, and the reduction of the peak amplitude. The errors are larger for stiffer, taller, and heavier structures, deeper foundations, and deeper soil layer. For example, for a stiff structure like Millikan library (NS response; length‐to‐width ratio ≈ 1), the error is 6.5% in system frequency, 44% in system damping, and 140% in peak amplitude. The antiplane 2D approximation has an opposite effect on system frequency and the same effect on system damping and peak relative response. Linear response analysis of a case study shows that the NEHRP‐2015 provisions for reduction of base shear force due to SSI may be unsafe for some structures. The presented correction factor diagrams can be used in practical design and other applications.  相似文献

This paper introduces a simple method to consider the effects of inertial soil–structure interaction (SSI) on the seismic demands of a yielding single‐degree‐of‐freedom structure. This involves idealizing the yielding soil–structure system as an effective substitute oscillator having a modified period, damping ratio, and ductility. A parametric study is conducted to obtain the ratio between the displacement ductility demand of a flexible‐base system and that of the corresponding fixed‐base system. It is shown that while additional foundation damping can reduce the overall response, the effects of SSI may also increase the ductility demand of some structures, mostly being ductile and having large structural aspect ratio, up to 15%. Finally, a design procedure is provided for incorporation of the SSI effects on structural response. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The Rayleigh damping model, which is pervasive in nonlinear response history analysis (RHA) of buildings, is shown to develop ‘spurious’ damping forces and lead to inaccurate response results. We prove that a viscous damping matrix constructed by superposition of modal damping matrices—irrespective of the number of modes included or values assigned to modal damping ratios—completely eliminates the ‘spurious’ damping forces. This is the damping model recommended for nonlinear RHA. Replacing the stiffness‐proportional part of Rayleigh damping by the tangent stiffness matrix is shown to improve response results. However, this model is not recommended because it lacks a physical basis and has conceptual implications that are troubling: hysteresis in damping force–velocity relationship and negative damping at large displacements. Furthermore, the model conflicts with the constant‐damping model that has been the basis for fundamental concepts and accumulated experience about the inelastic response of structures. With a distributed plasticity model, the structural response is not sensitive to the damping model; even the Rayleigh damping model leads to acceptable results. This perspective on damping provides yet another reason to employ the superior distributed plasticity models in nonlinear RHA. OpenSees software has been extended to include a damping matrix defined as the superposition of modal damping matrices. Although this model leads to a full populated damping matrix, the additional computational demands are demonstrated to be minimal. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

A method to transform the frequency‐dependent complex stiffness to the impulse response in the time domain was proposed in the previous paper. However, there is a problem in that the accuracy and the convergence of the transformed impulse response are not good in some cases. Moreover, the hysteretic damping was not considered in the previous study although it is essential for practical purposes. In this paper, transform method improvements are proposed. First, the accuracy and the convergence are improved by taking the concept of virtual mass into account. Then, a more improved method for transforming the complex stiffness with large hysteretic damping to the time domain is proposed using the least square method. It is well known that the rigorous transform of the hysteretic damping is impossible because it is non‐causal. So this method is thought to be an approximate causalization process. Investigated are earthquake responses of one‐way symmetric‐plan, one‐storey systems with non‐linear fluid viscous dampers (FVDs) attached in series to a linear brace (i.e. Chevron or inverted V‐shape braces). Thus, the non‐linear damper is viscous when the brace is considered rigid or viscoelastic (VE) when the brace is flexible. The energy dissipation capacity of a non‐linear FVD is characterized by an amplitude‐dependent damping ratio for an energy‐equivalent linear FVD, which is determined assuming the damper undergoes harmonic motion. Although this formulation is shown to be advantageous for single‐degree‐of‐freedom (SDF) systems, it is difficult to extend its application to multi‐degree‐of‐freedom (MDF) systems for two reasons: (1) the assumption that dampers undergo harmonic motion in parameterizing the non‐linear damper is not valid for its earthquake‐induced motion of an MDF system; and (2) ensuring simultaneous convergence of all unknown amplitudes of dampers is difficult in an iterative solution of the non‐linear system. To date, these limitations have precluded the parametric study of the dynamics of MDF systems with non‐linear viscous or VE dampers. However, they are overcome in this investigation using concepts of modal analysis because the system is weakly non‐linear due to supplemental damping. It is found that structural response is only weakly affected by damper non‐linearity and is increased by a small amount due to bracing flexibility. Thus, the effectiveness of supplemental damping in reducing structural responses and its dependence on the planwise distribution of non‐linear VE dampers were found to be similar to that of linear FVDs documented elsewhere. As expected, non‐linear viscous and VE dampers achieve essentially the same reduction in response but with much smaller damper force compared to linear dampers. Finally, the findings in this investigation indicate that the earthquake response of the asymmetric systems with non‐linear viscous or VE dampers can be estimated with sufficient accuracy for design applications by analysing the same asymmetric systems with all non‐linear dampers replaced by energy‐equivalent linear viscous dampers. This study investigates the effectiveness of the modal analysis using two‐degree‐of‐freedom (2DOF) modal stick to deal with the seismic analysis of one‐way asymmetric elastic systems with supplemental damping. The 2DOF modal stick possessing the non‐proportional damping property enables the modal translation and rotation to not be proportional even at elastic state. The analytical results of one‐storey and three‐storey buildings obtained by the proposed method are compared with those obtained by direct integration of the equation of motion and conventional approximate method, which neglects the off‐diagonal elements in the transformed damping matrix. It is found that the proposed simplified method, compared to conventional approximate methods, can significantly improve the accuracy of the analytical results and, at the same time, without obviously increasing computational efforts. In the paper, several causal linear models leading to nearly frequency independent complex stiffness are studied in time and frequency domains. Along with Biot model other three hereditary models are introduced into analysis. They all ensure practical constancy for damping properties but have limitations concerned with an increase in the real part of complex stiffness of corresponding material elements, as frequency grows. A new suggested method deals with given mechanical system as a whole: the imaginary part of the system compliance is constructed assuming that all elements have constant stiffness (with a modification for imaginary parts near zero frequency) and further the imaginary part of the system is used directly for studying transient vibrations supposing causality of the given mechanical system. The corresponding real part (not needed in the transient response analysis) is determined by Hilbert transformation. Examples relating to systems with one, two and infinite (shear beam) degrees of freedom are carried out for five compared models, allowing to reveal advantages and shortcomings of the models.
