Despite the fact that the physics of the cosmic microwave background anisotropies is most naturally expressed in Fourier space, pixelized maps are almost always used in the analysis and simulation of microwave data. A complementary approach is investigated here, in which maps are used only in the visualization of the data, and the temperature anisotropies and polarization are only ever expressed in terms of their spherical multipoles. This approach has a number of advantages: there is no information loss (assuming a band-limited observation); deconvolution of asymmetric beam profiles and the temporal response of the instrument are naturally included; correlated noise can easily be taken into account, removing the need for additional 'destriping'; polarization is also analysed in the same framework; and reliable estimates of the spherical multipoles of the sky and their errors are obtained directly for subsequent component separation and power spectrum estimation. The formalism required to analyse experiments which survey the full sky by scanning on circles is derived here, with particular emphasis on the Planck mission. A number of analytical results are obtained in the limit of simple scanning strategies. Although there are non-trivial computational obstacles to be overcome before the techniques described here can be implemented at high resolution, if these can be overcome the method should allow for a more robust return from the next generation of full-sky microwave background experiments.  相似文献

We use high-resolution hydrodynamic resimulations to investigate the properties of the thermal Sunyaev–Zel'dovich (SZ) effect from galaxy clusters. We compare results obtained using different physical models for the intracluster medium (ICM), and show how they modify the SZ emission in terms of cluster profiles and scaling relations. We also produce realistic mock observations to verify whether the results from hydrodynamic simulations can be confirmed. We find that SZ profiles depend marginally on the modelled physical processes, while they exhibit a strong dependence on cluster mass. The central and total SZ emission strongly correlates with the cluster X-ray luminosity and temperature. The logarithmic slopes of these scaling relations differ from the self-similar predictions by less than 0.2; the normalization of the relations is lower for simulations including radiative cooling. The observational test suggests that SZ cluster profiles are unlikely to be able to probe the ICM physics. The total SZ decrement appears to be an observable much more robust than the central intensity, and we suggest using the former to investigate scaling relations.  相似文献

It appears that most stars are born in clusters, and that at birth most stars have circumstellar discs which are comparable in size to the separations between the stars. Interactions between neighbouring stars and discs are therefore likely to play a key role in determining disc lifetimes, stellar masses, and the separations and eccentricities of binary orbits. Such interactions may also cause fragmentation of the discs, thereby triggering the formation of additional stars.   We have carried out a series of simulations of star–disc interactions using an SPH code which treats self-gravity, hydrodynamic and viscous forces. We find that interactions between discs and stars provide a mechanism for removing energy from, or adding energy to, the orbits of the stars, and for truncating the discs. However, capture during such encounters is unlikely to be an important binary formation mechanism.   A more significant consequence of such encounters is that they can trigger fragmentation of the disc, via tidally and compressionally induced gravitational instabilities, leading to the formation of additional stars and substellar objects. When the disc spins and stellar orbits are randomly oriented, encounters lead to the formation of new companions to the original star in 20 per cent of encounters. If most encounters are prograde and coplanar, as suggested by simulations of dynamically triggered star formation, then new companions are formed in approximately 50 per cent of encounters.  相似文献

The Planck mission is the most sensitive all-sky cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment currently planned. The High-Frequency Instrument (HFI) will be especially suited for observing clusters of galaxies by their thermal Sunyaev–Zel'dovich (SZ) effect. In order to assess Planck 's SZ capabilities in the presence of spurious signals, a simulation is presented that combines maps of the thermal and kinetic SZ effects with a realization of the CMB, in addition to Galactic foregrounds (synchrotron emission, free–free emission, thermal emission from dust, CO-line radiation) as well as the submillimetric emission from celestial bodies of our Solar system. Additionally, observational issues such as the finite angular resolution and spatially non-uniform instrumental noise of Planck 's sky maps are taken into account, yielding a set of all-sky flux maps, the autocorrelation and cross-correlation properties of which are examined in detail. In the second part of the paper, filtering schemes based on scale-adaptive and matched filtering are extended to spherical data sets, that enable the amplification of the weak SZ signal in the presence of all contaminations stated above. The theory of scale-adaptive and matched filtering in the framework of spherical maps is developed, the resulting filter kernel shapes are discussed and their functionality is verified.  相似文献

We repeat the directional spherical real Morlet wavelet analysis, used previously to detect non-Gaussianity in the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe ( WMAP ) 1- and 3-yr data, on the WMAP 5-yr data. The non-Gaussian signal detected previously is present in the 5-yr data at a slightly increased statistical significance of approximately 99 per cent. Localized regions that contribute most strongly to the non-Gaussian signal are found to be very similar to those detected in the previous releases of the WMAP data. When the localized regions detected in the 5-yr data are excluded from the analysis, the non-Gaussian signal is eliminated.  相似文献

A directional spherical wavelet analysis is performed to examine the Gaussianity of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe ( WMAP ) 1-yr data. Such an analysis is facilitated by the introduction of a fast directional continuous spherical wavelet transform. The directional nature of the analysis allows us to probe orientated structure in the data. Significant deviations from Gaussianity are detected in the skewness and kurtosis of spherical elliptical Mexican hat and real Morlet wavelet coefficients for both the WMAP and Tegmark, de Oliveira-Costa & Hamilton foreground-removed maps. The previous non-Gaussianity detection made by Vielva et al. using the spherical symmetric Mexican hat wavelet is confirmed, although their detection at the 99.9 per cent significance level is only made at the 95.3 per cent significance level using our most conservative statistical test. Furthermore, deviations from Gaussianity in the skewness of spherical real Morlet wavelet coefficients on a wavelet scale of 550 arcmin (corresponding to an effective global size on the sky of ∼26° and an internal size of ∼3°) at an azimuthal orientation of 72°, are made at the 98.3 per cent significance level, using the same conservative method. The wavelet analysis inherently allows us to localize on the sky those regions that introduce skewness and those that introduce kurtosis. Preliminary noise analysis indicates that these detected deviation regions are not atypical and have average noise dispersion. Further analysis is required to ascertain whether these detected regions correspond to secondary or instrumental effects, or whether in fact the non-Gaussianity detected is due to intrinsic primordial fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background.  相似文献
