As part of the NASA Space Infrared telescope Facility (SIRTF), a low noise multiplexer has been developed. The hybridization of this multiplexer to a high indium antimonide (InSb) photodiode array has resulted in a MWIR detector of outstanding performance. The multiplexer is made of a 256×256 array of source follower amplifiers on a 30 m square pitch. Random access binary decoders are used to access each pixel of the array, allowing any read-out scheme to be implemented. Dark current has been measured at temperatures ranging from 4K to 77K. Generation recombination currents dominate above 45K. With 100mV of reverse bias applied, less than 3×10-17 A is typical below 50K with 8×10-19 A (5 e-/s) at 4K. Under the same conditions 0.25 pA was measured at 77K. Read noise has been measured as low as 186 e- using non-correlated techniques. Detector QE is 50 to 80 % through the entire 1 to 5 m band.  相似文献

A liquid helium cooled mid-infrared imaging Fabry-Perot spectrometer has been under development. A Si:P 5×5 detector array is used for this instrument. Although the array system has small format, but combination with JFET array will provide noise equivalent line flux of 1.0×10-21 W/cm 2 (1000sec, 10). This sensitivity is comparable with the SWS of the ISO.  相似文献

The upper limit on the quiet time solar neutron flux from 1–20 MeV has been measured to be less than 2 × 10-3 n cm-2 s–1 at the 95% confidence level. This result is deduced from the OGO-6 neutron detector measurements of the day-night effect near the equator at low altitudes for the period from June 7, 1969, to December 23, 1969. The OGO-6 detector had very low (< 4%) counting rate contributions from locally produced neutrons in the detecting system and the spacecraft and from charged-particle interactions in the neutron sensor.Communications Research Center, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.  相似文献

Two flights from Alice Springs, Australia, were achieved in November 1977 and November 1978 with a plastic scintillator -burst detector, effective area 6.3 m2, thickness 5 cm, energy response in the range 50 keV to 2 MeV. In 33 hr of good, high altitude data, two bursts were detected, yielding a rate corrected to an isotropic flux of at a size of 8.5×10–9 erg cm–2. One event, seen at 22.14 on 15 Nov 1978, was confirmed by spacecraft measurements. The second, too small to be detected by spacecraft, arrived from 0 hr RA, –13.2° Decl. ±12° and possibly comes from a confirmed -burst source location. A galactic origin with a source distribution originating from a relatively thick disk, is favoured by these results.  相似文献

SIXE (Spanish Italian X-ray Experiment) is an X-ray detector withgeometric area of 2300 cm2, formed by four identical gas-filledMulticell Proportional Counters, and devoted to study the long termspectroscopy of selected X-ray sources in the energy range 3–50 keV. Themain characteristics of SIXE are: time accuracy of 1 microsecond, spectral resolution of 5% for E > 35 keV and 46/E% for E <35 keV, continuum sensitivity (3 in 105 s) of 2 ×10-6 ph cm-2 s-1 keV-1, and line sensitivity (3in 105 s) of 8 × 10-6 ph cm-2 s-1. The size of theinstruments and the requirements of the payload (weight 103 kg, fulldimensions 660 × 660 × 450 mm3, power budget < 60 W,on-board memory 2 Gbits, telemetry rate < 100 kbps) make this experimentfully compatible with the MINISAT platform. The main scientific goal of SIXE is the study of short and long termvariability of some of the most important X-ray sources. To do that a fewselected extragalactic and galactic X-ray sources will be selected toperform a dedicated and extensive monitoring program. The mission willprovide in this way the unique opportunity for the study of X-ray sourceswith a temporal accuracy of 1 microsecond all through the time range10-5 :107 s.  相似文献

Data accumulated by the Solar Maximum Mission Gamma Ray Spectrometer (GRS) have been searched for evidence of the 2.223 MeV neutron capture line from the Sun, outside the times of -ray-emitting solar flares. Background-corrected spectra accumulated over 3-day intervals between 1980 and 1989 show no evidence of the line. Upper limits are reported separately for periods of high and low solar activity.A conservative 3 upper limit of 5.7 × 10–5 (cm2 s)–1 is placed on the steady flux in the 2.223 MeV line during inactive periods, which is nearly two orders of magnitude lower than previously published results. After correction for limb darkening of the line emission from off-center positions, this upper limit becomes 7.1 × 10–5 (cm2s)–1. Our 3 upper limit on the steady flux in the line during periods of high solar activity is 6.9 × 10–5 (cm2 s)–1, or 8.6 × 10–5 (cm2 s)–1 after correction for limb darkening. Our results imply that the quiescent solar corona cannot be heated by ions accelerated above 1 MeV in microflares (or a continuous acceleration process), so long as the ion energy spectrum is similar to that measured in large flares. We also use our results to derive the rate of tritium production at the solar surface; our upper limit of 9 nuclei (cm2 s)–1 is about a factor of 9 below the upper limit from searches for 3H in the solar wind. We place upper limits of the order 1033 on the number of energetic (> 30 MeV) protons which can be stored in active regions prior to being released in solar flares, which imply that the strongest observed flares cannot be produced by such a mechanism.  相似文献

The Hughes Technology Center (HTC) has developed a family of high-performance Si:As impurity-band conduction (IBC) hybrid focal plane arrays (FPAs) optimized for low background applications: 58×62 pixels (76-m pitch), 128×128 pixels (75- and 120-m pitch), and 256×256 pixels (30-m pitch). These FPAs exhibit state-of-the-art low noise (<100e -) achieved by using readout arrays fabricated on HTC's CryoCMOS process line. The IBC detector arrays, also fabricated at HTC, exhibit high quantum efficiency over a wide waveband with operating temperature of 4–12 K. In addition, Hughes is developing a 256×256 Si:As IBC FPA for high background applications as well as a 512×512 FPA. Readout development includes design and fabrication of 256×256 readouts with large well size of 1×107 e - for the high-background FPA and 512×512 readouts with moderate well size (1×106 e -).  相似文献

We present calibration results and laboratory images produced by the balloon-borne hard X-ray imaging telescope TIMAX. The images were produced with an241Am radioactive source placed 45 m away from the detector plane, in the center of the field of view. It is shown that the mask 3-antimask imaging reconstruction process, when combined with flat-fielding techniques, is very effective at recovering signal-to-noise ratio lost due to systematic non-uniformity in the background measured by the 35 detectors. The experiment was launched in June 8th, 1993 from Birigüi, SP, Brazil, onboard a 186,000 m3 stratospheric balloon, and remained at an atmospheric depth of 2 g cm–2su for 8 hours. Even though no scientific data were gathered in this first flight, we obtained valuable engineering data and could also calculate the sensitivity of the experiment based on the instrumental background spectrum at balloon altitudes. In the 60–70 keV energy band, the experiment can detect 3 sources at a level of 1.2 x 10–4 photons cm–2 s–1 keV–1 for an integration of 6 hours at 2.1 g cm–2.  相似文献

We present observations of the 3130 Å Beii resonance doublet in stars of intermediate metal deficiency, –0.6[Fe/H]–1.1 obtained with the Intermediate Dispersion Spectrograph and IPCS detector at the 2.5 m Isaac Newton Telescope on La Palma. The derived beryllium abundances range from 5.6×10–12 (one hafl solar) to 2×10–12 (one sixth solar). These values, interpolated between the sets of previous beryllium measurements at higher and at lower metallicities, serve to confirm the monotonic variation of the Be abundance with Fe during the evolution of the galactic disc. We find that there was no extreme burst of Be production in the halo. To circumvent the effects of depletion, a statistical set of data is needed, for which the upper envelope can be used to trace galactic Be evolution. We note that no observations with sufficient sensitivity to detect Be in the extremely metal deficient stars of the halo have been reported to date.  相似文献

ARNICA (ARcetri Near Infrared CAmera) is the imaging camera for the near infrared bands between 1.0 and 2.5 m that Arcetri Observatory has designed and built as a common use instrument for the TIRGO telescope (1.5 m diameter, f/20) located at Gornergrat (Switzerland). The scale is 1 per pixel, with sky coverage of more than 4×4 on the NICMOS 3 (256×256 pixels, 40 m side) detector array. The optical path is compact enough to be enclosed in a25.4 cm diameter dewar; the working temperature of detector and optics is 76 K. We give an estimate of performance, in terms of sensitivity with an assigned observing time, along with some preliminary considerations on photometric accuracy.  相似文献

A general Hamiltonian for a rotating Moon in the field of the Earth is expanded in terms of parameters orienting the spin angular momentum relative to the pricipal axes of the Moon and relative to coordinate axes fixed in the orbital plane. The effects of elastic distortion are included as modifications of the moment of inertia tensor, where the magnitude of the distortion is parameterized by the Love numberk 2. The principal periodic terms in the longitude of a point on the Moon due to variations of the tide caused by the Earth are shown to have amplitudes between 3.9 × 10–3 and 1.6 × 10–2 with a period of an anomalistic month, 3.0 × 10–4 and 1.2 × 10–3 with a period of one-half an anomalistic month and 2.4 × 10–4 and 9.6 × 10–4 with a period of one-half of a nodical month. The extremes in the amplitudes correspond to rigidities of 8 × 1011 cgs and 2 × 1011 cgs, respectively, the former rigidity being comparable to that of the Earth. Only the largest amplitude given above is comparable to that detectable by the projected precision of the laser ranging to the lunar retrorereflectors, and this amplitude corresponds to an improbably low rigidity for the Moon. A detailed derivation of the free wobble of the lunar spin axis about the axis of maximum moment of inertia is given, where it is shown that elasticity can alter the period of the free wobble of 75.3 yr by only 3 × 10–4 to 10–3 of this period. Also, the effect of elasticity on the period of free libration is completely negligible by many orders of magnitude. If the Moon's rigidity is close to that of the Earth there is no effect of elasticity on the rotation which can be measured with the laser ranging and, therefore, no elastic properties of the Moon can be determined from variations in the rotation.Currently on leave from the Dept. of Physics, University of California, Santa, Barbara, California.Communication presented at the conference on Lunar Dynamics and Observational Coordinate Systems held January 15–17, 1973 at the Lunar Science Institute, Houston, Tex., U.S.A.  相似文献

We have studied the thermonuclear runaways which develop on white dwarfs of 1.205M and 1.358M accreting hydrogen rich material at 10–10 M yr–1. It is found that ignition of this material occurs at densities in excess of about 104 gm cm–3 and that the critical accumulated mass required to initiate the runaway is 0.7(1.5)×10–4 M for a 1.358(1.205)M white dwarf.  相似文献

We have studied the synthesis of26Al during combined hydrogen and helium-burning processes in high temperature and density conditions. The possible sites for these processes are believed to be the neutron star surfaces where the density ranges from =104–107 g cm–3 and temperature range from 108–8×108 K. The screening effect which leads to an enhancement of nuclear reaction rates is taken into account whenever necessary. A detailed calculation of the abundances of26Al and27Al isotopes is presented here. Finite amounts of26Al is found to be produced atT=2×108 K and =108 g cm–3 due to these combined reactions. This situation is likely to be realized during the -ray burst events on neutron star surface. The amount of material processed in the burst sources is very little compared to the amount of material processed in Novae or Supernovae. Thus it is suggested that rather than contributing to the overall amount of26Al, -ray bursts are likely to contribute more significantly to the inhomogeneity of26Al distribution in interstellar medium.  相似文献

Saturn's diffuse E ring is the largest ring of the Solar System and extends from about (Saturn radius RS=60,330 km) to at least encompassing the icy moons Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione, and Rhea. After Cassini's insertion into her saturnian orbit in July 2004, the spacecraft performed a number of equatorial as well as steep traversals through the E ring inside the orbit of the icy moon Dione. Here, we report about dust impact data we obtained during 2 shallow and 6 steep crossings of the orbit of the dominant ring source—the ice moon Enceladus. Based on impact data of grains exceeding 0.9 μm we conclude that Enceladus feeds a torus populated by grains of at least this size along its orbit. The vertical ring structure at agrees well with a Gaussian with a full-width-half-maximum (FWHM) of ∼4200 km. We show that the FWHM at is due to three-body interactions of dust grains ejected by Enceladus' recently discovered ice volcanoes with the moon during their first orbit. We find that particles with initial speeds between 225 and 235 m s−1 relative to the moon's surface dominate the vertical distribution of dust. Particles with initial velocities exceeding the moon's escape speed of 207 m s−1 but slower than 225 m s−1 re-collide with Enceladus and do not contribute to the ring particle population. We find the peak number density to range between 16×10−2 m−3 and 21×10−2 m−3 for grains larger 0.9 μm, and 2.1×10−2 m−3 and 7.6×10−2 m−3 for grains larger than 1.6 μm. Our data imply that the densest point is displaced outwards by at least with respect of the Enceladus orbit. This finding provides direct evidence for plume particles dragged outwards by the ambient plasma. The differential size distribution for grains >0.9 μm is described best by a power law with slopes between 4 and 5. We also obtained dust data during ring plane crossings in the vicinity of the orbits of Mimas and Tethys. The vertical distribution of grains >0.8 μm at Mimas orbit is also well described by Gaussian with a FWHM of ∼5400 km and displaced southwards by ∼1200 km with respect to the geometrical equator. The vertical distribution of ring particles in the vicinity of Tethys, however, does not match a Gaussian. We use the FWHM values obtained from the vertical crossings to establish a 2-dimensional model for the ring particle distribution which matches our observations during vertical and equatorial traversals through the E ring.  相似文献

CASPIR is a near-infrared spectrometer/imager being built for the Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories' 2.3 m telescope. The instrument is based on a SBRC 256×256 InSb detector array and uses AR-coated Sapphire, MgO, CaF2, and BaF2 optics to produce two imaging focal plane scales with 0.5/pixel and 0.25/pixel. Spectral resolving powers of 500 will be achieved through a 1×128 slit with three grisms designed for the J, H, and K bands. IJ, JH, and HK cross-dispersed échelle grisms will achieve resolving powers of 1100 through a 1×15 slit. Coronograph and imaging polarimetry modes will also be available. The various observing configurations are selected via five remotely controlled wheels. The instrument design and system architecture are discussed, and preliminary detector performance figures reported.  相似文献

The figure of Mercury is estimated in terms of an isostatic form of equilibrium which tends to be controlled by the situation near perihelion passage at the 32 resonance spin rate. The ratios of the principal moments of inertia for Mercury are: (1)(C–A)/C7×10–5; (2)(C–B)/C5×10–5 and (3)(B–A)/C2×10–5. The thermal effect on Mercury's figure during solidification forces Mercury's rotation to be trapped in the 32 resonance lock as its spin rate is being slowed by tidal effects. It is shown that the process of trapping of Mercury has been naturally affected by the instantaneous solidification of Mercury into a shape with two thermal bulges, and that the two permanent thermal bulges stabilize the planet's rotation.  相似文献

Observations of the 1.10- and 1.18-μm nightside windows by the SPICAV-IR instrument aboard Venus Express were analyzed to characterize the various sources of gaseous opacity and determine the H2O mole fraction in the lower atmosphere of Venus. We showed that the line profile model of Afanasenko and Rodin (Afanasenko, T.S., Rodin, A.V. [2007]. Astron. Lett. 33, 203–210) underestimates the CO2 absorption in the high-wavelength wing of the 1.18-μm window and we derived an empirical lineshape that matches this wing well. An additional continuum opacity is required to reproduce the variation of the 1.10- and 1.18-μm radiances with surface elevation as observed by the VIRTIS-M instrument aboard Venus Express. A constant absorption coefficient of 0.7 ± 0.2 × 10−9 cm−1 am−2 best reproduces the observed variation. We compared spectra calculated with different CO2 and H2O line lists. We found that the CDSD line list lacks the 5ν1 + ν3 series of CO2 bands, which provide significant opacity in Venus’ deep atmosphere, and we have constructed a composite line list that best reproduces the observations. We also showed for the first time that HDO brings significant absorption at 1140–1190 nm. Using the best representation of the atmospheric opacity we could reach, we retrieved a water vapor mole fraction of ppmv, pertaining to the altitude range 5–25 km. Combined with previous measurements in the 1.74- and 2.3-μm windows, this result provides strong evidence for a uniform H2O profile below 40 km, in agreement with chemical models.  相似文献

In this paper we consider effects of the general relativity and an accreting black hole in a globular cluster by studying the evolution of a globular cluster core as a whole, i.e., without the partition of the core into the so-called cusp and isothermal core regions. The globular cluster core is assumed to contain a massive black hole at its center. We show that the final fate of the evolution of a globular cluster core depends on the mass of the black hole at its center. When the massM of the black hole is greater than 3×103 M , there will be a contraction of the core. On the other hand, if the mass of the black hole is smaller (102 M M3×103 M ) in the center, the core will expand until complete dissolution.  相似文献

We present observations of the solar flare on 1980 June 27, 16:14–16:33 UT, which was observed by a balloon-borne 300 cm2 phoswich hard X-ray detector and by the IKARUS radio spectrometer. This flare shows intense hard X-ray (HXR) emission and an extreme productivity of (at least 754) type III bursts at 200–400 MHz. A linear correlation was found between the type III burst rate and the HXR fluence, with a coefficient of 7.6 × 1027 photons keV–1 per type III burst at 20 keV. The occurrence of 10 type III bursts per second, and also the even higher rate of millisecond spikes, suggests a high degree of fragmentation in the acceleration region. This high quantization of injected beams, assuming the thick-target model, shows up in a linear relationship between hard X-ray fluence and the type III rate, but not as fine structures in the HXR time profile. The generation of a superhot isothermal HXR component in the decay phase of the flare coincides with the fade-out of type III production.Universities Space Research Associates.ST Systems Corporation.  相似文献

We have studied the properties and evolution of several active regions observed at multiple wavelengths over a period of about 10 days. We have used simultaneous microwave (1.5 and 17 GHz) and soft X-ray measurements made with the Very Large Array (VLA), the Nobeyama Radio Heliograph (NRH) and the Soft X-ray Telescope (SXT) on board the Yohkoh spacecraft, as well as photospheric magnetograms from KPNO. This is the first detailed comparison between observations at radio wavelengths differing by one order of magnitude. We have performed morphological and quantitative studies of active region properties by making inter-comparison between observations at different wavelengths and tracking the day-to-day variations. We have found good general agreement between the 1.5 and 17 GHz radio maps and the soft X-rays images. The 17 GHz emission is consistent with thermal bremsstrahlung (free-free) emission from electrons at coronal temperatures plus a small component coming from plasma at lower temperatures. We did not find any systematic limb darkening of the microwave emission from active regions. We discuss the difference between the observed microwave brightness temperature and the one expected from X-ray data and in terms of emission of a low temperature plasma at the transition region level. We found a coronal optical thickness of 10-3 and 1 for radiation at 17 and 1.5 GHz, respectively. We have also estimated the typical coronal values of emission measure ( 5 × 1028 cm-5), electron temperature ( 4.5 × 1066 K) and density ( 1.2 × 109 cm3). Assuming that the emission mechanism at 17 GHz is due to thermal free-free emission, we calculated the magnetic field in the source region using the observed degree of polarization. From the degree of polarization, we infer that the 17 GHz radiation is confined to the low-lying inner loop system of the active region. We also extrapolated the photospheric magnetic field distribution to the coronal level and found it to be in good agreement with the coronal magnetic field distribution obtained from microwave observations.  相似文献
