Ecological surveys were conducted over the period 1989 to 1991 on the island of Anak Krakatau. The aims of the study were to detail a key phase of rapid change in the vegetation succession and plant colonization of this young volcano and to compare results with those from earlier studies.Floristic composition was determined by reconaissance of all vegetated areas during the period 1989 to 1991. Colonization has been rapid since 1983 with 53 species newly recorded for Anak Krakatau, comprising 8 Pteridophyta and 45 Angiospermae. Of the latter, a significant element (13) were of species believed to be human-dispersed. Comparison of all floral surveys has revealed a core of strand-line and pioneer colonists which has been common to each restart of colonization. The sea-dispersed component is already comparable in size to that of Rakata and is thought unlikely to increase significantly from this point. The accumulation of animal-dispersed species of interior habitats has only recently begun to pick up speed.Vegetation was characterised by means of plot-based sampling, including the establishment of three permanent plots, and by mapping at the whole-island scale. Variation in composition within the island is discussed, with particular reference to the three vegetated forelands. Anak Krakatau now supports the most extensive and advanced vegetation in its disrupted 61-year history. A more or less closed cover extends along the eastern/north-eastern coast-line, but the xeric interior remains only sparsely vegetated. It is concluded that because of volcanic disturbance a base-line for ecosystem development on Anak Krakatau cannot be calculated but that the pattern of change is not inconsistent with significant disturbance ca. 1972 and the subsequent relaxation of these peculiar environmental constraints.  相似文献

Photographs of the vegetated North and East Forelands of Anak Krakatau, which emerged from the sea in 1930 and was totally devastated by volcanic activity in 1952/53 provide some evidence of rate of change of plant cover from grassland to woodland between 1971 and 1991. The series of photographs demostrate that vegetational stages of the two forelands have not been synchronous and suggest that the North Foreland is lagging the East Foreland by about 12 years.A recent hypothesis that Anak Krakatau's vegetation was destroyed, totally or almost so, by eruptions in 1972/73 and the island's vegetation has regenerated since that time is not easily accommodated by the photographic evidence, nor by the relative rates of change on Rakata (Krakatau's post-1883 remnant) and Anak Krakatau. The photographic evidence accords more closely with a hypothesis that the 1972/73 eruptions affected the North Foreland's vegetation only, or affected it to a much greater degree than that of the East Foreland, allowing the latter's post-1952/53 succession to proceed relatively unhampered.  相似文献

Archaean volcanic rocks and volcanogenic sediments exposed in a regional syncline south of Meekatharra, Western Australia are described. Initial volcanic activity produced a suite of high-Mg basalts containing 10–19% MgO. Pillowed tholeiitic basalts overlie the high-Mg basalts. These lower units are thought to have been derived from a central fracture zone. The uppermost units consist of volcanogenic sediments interlayered with andesite and dacite flows which appear to have been derived from a marginal andesite pile to the east. The Archaean sequence has been tightly folded, cross-faulted and intruded by post-Archaean dykes.The central succession is predominantly submarine, although the marginal andesite pile may be in part subaerial. Whilst there are some similarities with the Marda complex to the southeast (Hallberg et al., 1976), the rocks near Meekatharra are more analogous to those associated with modern island arcs.  相似文献

The ppaer re-examines three suggestions previously made concerning the colonization of the Krakatau islands since the extirpating 1883 eruption that involve the more recently emergent volcanic island Anak Krakatau, which itself suffered a devastating eruption in 1952. The suggestions re-addressed in the light of recent comments by other workers are:
(1)  Anak Krakatau offers, in general terms, an analogy of the early successional processes that occurred on the three older islands in the first decades after the 1883 extirpating eruption.
(2)  Anak Krakatau (with the Sertung spit) may have acted as an ecological refuge for open country species whose habitat on the three older islands declined as a result of vegetation succession.
(3)  Mainland open country species that did not colonize the archipelago when the appropriate vegetational successional stage occurred on the three older islands may now do so through a reopened early-successional window — Anak Krakatau (and the Sertung spit).

The volcanic island of Jan Mayen, remotely located in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea, was covered by a contiguous ice cap during the Late Weichselian. Until now, it has been disputed whether parts of the island south of the presently glaciated Mount Beerenberg area were ever glaciated. Based on extensive field mapping we demonstrate that an ice cap covered all land areas and likely also extended onto the shallow shelf areas southeast and east of the island. Chronological interpretations are based on K-Ar and 40Ar/39Ar dating of volcanic rocks, cosmogenic nuclide (36Cl) surface exposure dating of bedrock and glacial erratics, and radiocarbon dating. We argue that ice growth started after 34 ka and that an initial deglaciation started some 21.5–19.5 ka in the southern and middle parts of the island. In the northern parts, closer to the present glaciers, the deglaciation might have started later, as evidenced by the establishment of vegetation 17–16 cal. ka BP. During full glaciation, the ice cap was likely thickest over the southern part of the island. This may explain a seemingly delayed deglaciation compared with the northern parts despite earlier initial deglaciation. In a broader context, the new knowledge of the Late Weichselian of the island contributes to the understanding of glaciations surrounding the North Atlantic and its climate history.  相似文献

We present a high‐resolution conceptual hydrogeological model for complex basaltic volcanic islands based on Mayotte Island in the Comoros. Its geological structure and hydrogeological functioning are deduced from a large dataset: geological mapping, geophysics, some forty new boreholes, piezometric data, hydraulic conductivity, hydrochemical data, etc. We describe previously unknown deep cut‐and‐fill palaeovalleys. The resulting conceptual geological and hydrogeological model of the island is very different from the Hawaiian model, in that it lacks a low‐elevation basal aquifer and dyke‐impounded high‐level aquifers. It is closer to the Canary Islands model, which has, however, not yet been described at a high‐resolution scale. It does not have a continuous aquifer, but rather a discontinuous succession of perched aquifers separated by aquicludes and aquitards. This results more from the complex geological structure of the island, which has experienced several phases of volcanism, erosion and weathering, than from its age, but is also a result of the high‐resolution scale of the model. High‐resolution conceptual modelling is now necessary to solve problems of applied geology and hydrogeology.  相似文献

西准噶尔塔尔巴哈台-谢米斯台地区研究和找矿勘探工作十分薄弱,近年来随着谢米斯台铜矿的发现,本项目组陆续发现了喀因德、乌兰浩特、阿依德、巴汗等铜矿点,指示该区具有与火山热液活动有关的铜成矿作用有的潜力。本文对这些矿床(点)开展了地质特征、年代学和地球化学研究显示,区内发育的阿尔木强、谢米斯台铜矿床以及喀因德、乌兰浩特、阿依德、巴汗等铜矿点与火山岩地层密切相关,矿化主要表现为黄铁矿化、孔雀石化,发育绿帘石化、绿泥石化、硅化、碳酸岩化等蚀变,具有火山热液型铜矿特点。锆石LA-ICP-MS U-Pb测年获得喀因德铜矿点火山岩年龄为455.1±5.4Ma,乌兰浩特铜矿点火山岩年龄为428.6±4.6Ma,阿依德铜矿点火山岩年龄为428.8±7.2Ma,谢米斯台铜矿床火山岩年龄为424.3±4.3Ma,阿尔木强铜矿床火山岩年龄为426.7Ma,巴汗铜矿点火山岩年龄为411.7±4.7Ma,可分为晚奥陶世、中志留世、早泥盆世三个阶段,以中志留世为主。地球化学特征显示晚奥陶世、中志留世、早泥盆世三个阶段的火山岩均形成于岛弧环境;且具有类似的岩浆源区和演化过程;岩浆在上升侵位过程中没有明显的受到外来物质混染。综合地质、年代学和地球化学特征显示,塔尔巴哈台-谢米斯台地区与火山热液有关的铜矿床(点)主要受控于构造背景、地层组合、岩石类型、蚀变、控矿构造等因素,其中中志留世中基性火山岩、与火山机构相关的深部可能存在的次火山岩或浅成侵入岩分布区具有较好的找矿潜力。  相似文献

Globally significant geoheritage features of the Cliefden Caves area, in the Belubula River Valley between Orange and Cowra in central western New South Wales, comprise a richly fossiliferous shallow-water limestone succession of Late Ordovician age (the Cliefden Caves Limestone Subgroup) overlain by deep-water laminites and allochthonous limestones of the Upper Ordovician Malongulli Formation. Key features of the Ordovician geology of the Cliefden Caves area that have been identified using the Geoheritage Toolkit as being of international significance are the abundance of unique and exceptionally diverse fossils in the Fossil Hill Limestone (forming the lower part of the Cliefden Caves Limestone Subgroup), which supplement detailed interpretation of carbonate-dominated deposition within an Ordovician volcanic island setting. The fossiliferous limestones preserve biostromes and local small bioherms of stromatoporoids and corals, and recurrent in situ and disarticulated/imbricated Eodinobolus shell beds formed in shallow, quiet-water, dominantly muddy carbonate sediments that passed up-sequence to clay-free carbonate environments. These mud-dominated carbonate sediments are interspersed with higher-energy conditions, represented by skeletal, lithoclastic and calcrete-ooid grainstones overlying disconformities, leading to the identification of subaerial disconformities and associated diagenesis in the Fossil Hill Limestone. The Fossil Hill Limestone is succeeded by massive limestones in the middle part of the Cliefden Caves Limestone Subgroup and then, in turn by the Vandon Limestone and the deeper-water graptolitic laminites of the Malongulli Formation—this completes a succession that is rarely preserved in the geological record, further enhancing the geoheritage significance of the Cliefden Caves area.  相似文献

The volcano-sedimentary succession around Wadi Zaghra in Sinai, at the northernmost segment of the Arabian Nubian Shield, comprises volcanic rocks interbedded with rather immature sediments. The succession is dominated by intermediate to silicic volcanics of medium-to high-K calc-alkaline affinity. It is divided into two units, the lower unit includes intermediate rocks and dacites interbedded with graywackes, semi-pelites and pelites and topped by polymict conglomerates. This unit is subjected to folding and regional metamorphism(up to garnet zone) and is intruded by quartz diorite-granodiorite inducing, locally, low-pressure contact thermal metamorphism. The unmetamorphosed upper unit encompasses acid volcanics intercalated with litharenite, sublitharenite and minor arenite. The rhyolites of this unit pertain to the highly fractionated granites and are characterized by an agpaitic index(NK/A) ranging from 0.87 to 0.96. They may reflect either extensive interaction of subduction-related magmas with the continental crust or a change in the tectonic regime. The present lithological and geochemical characteristics of the studied sediments together with available zircon ages indicate rather distal provenance of their detritus. This detritus comprises fluvial-alluvial sediments accumulated in the intermontane basins, which are half-grabens or tilted fault blocks. The tectonic setting of the depositional basins is active continental margin and continental island arcs. Geochemical patterns of the Zaghra volcano-sedimentary succession indicate their correlation with the Dokhan Volcanics-Hammamat Clastics sequence of the Eastern Desert of Egypt. Also, the Zaghra volcanics display geochemical similarities with those exposed in Sinai, at the Rutig, Ferani and Iqna Shar'a areas. The Zaghra succession is dated as Ediacaran but is not related either to the ensimatic island arc assemblage or to the rift-related assemblage formed during the early stages of the break-up of Rodinia as previously thought.  相似文献

Ordovician rocks of the Lachlan Orogen consist of two major associations, mafic to intermediate volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks (Macquarie Arc), which aerially comprise several north–south-trending belts, and the quartz-rich turbidite succession. Relationships between these associations are integral to resolving their tectonic settings and opinions range between contacts being major thrusts, combinations of various types of faults, and stratigraphic contacts with structural complications. Stratigraphic contacts between these associations are found with volcaniclastic-dominant units overlying quartz-turbidite units along the eastern boundary of the eastern volcanic belt and along the southern boundary of the central volcanic belt. Mixing between these major associations is limited and reflects waning quartzose turbidite deposition along a gently sloping sea floor not penetrating steeper volcaniclastic aprons that were developing around the growing volcanic centres formed during late Middle Ordovician to early Silurian Macquarie Arc igneous activity. An island arc setting has been most widely supported for the Macquarie Arc, but the identification and polarity of the associated subduction zone remain a contentious issue particularly for the Early Ordovician phase of igneous activity. The Macquarie Arc initiated within a Cambrian backarc formed by sea-floor spreading behind a boninitic island arc and presumably reflects a renewed response to regional convergence as subduction ceased along the Ross–Delamerian convergent boundary at the East Gondwana continental margin. An extensional episode accompanied initiation of the late Middle Ordovician expansion in island arc development. A SSE-dipping subduction zone is considered to have formed the Macquarie Arc and underwent anticlockwise rotation about an Euler pole at the western termination of the island arc. This resulted in widespread deformation west of the Macquarie Arc in the Benambran Orogeny and development of subduction along the eastern margin of the orogenic belt.  相似文献

The present study investigated the macrobenthic community in Tolo Harbour, Hong Kong, aiming at linking heavy metal concentrations to differences in macrobenthic community. The stations investigated in Tolo Harbour have widely contrasting features, with some areas located in the Plove Cove displaying both high species richness and abundance while other areas displaying quite impoverished or even void of macrobenthos. High diversity and abundance of macrobenthos in areas with low heavy metal concentrations were recorded. Strong negative correlation between macrobenthic diversity and heavy metal concentrations was found, and this implicated the pollution-induced degradation of macrobenthos in some locations in Tolo Harbour. These results support the Pearson–Rosenberg model for succession along a pollution gradient.  相似文献

Abstract

The oldest rocks in the Western Highlands of New Guinea are granite and metamorphic rocks, and these are unconformably overlain by an incomplete marine succession of Permian, Upper Jurassic, Cretaceous, Eocene, Oligocene and Miocene sediments with a maximum thickness of 34,000 ft. The sedimentary succession in the east of the region is much thicker than in the west. Jurassic seas transgressed from the east. Studies of the faunas and petrology of the sediments show that the western part of the region was out of range of the sources of Cretaceous vulcanism and slow pelagic sedimentation continued into the Lower Miocene. By the Middle Miocene a volcanic island arc had developed in the vicinity of the Lai Syncline and the sediments are of shallow-water type, rich in volcanic debris.

Both sediments and basement were folded into a number of anticlines and synclines at the end of the Pliocene. Vigorous erosion was followed by extensive Pleistocene vulcanism in the west. Pleistocene glaciation occurred in the Bismarck Range down to about 13,000 feet above sea-level.  相似文献

Permo-Triassic volcanic rocks of the Choiyoi Group crop out at Quebrada de Santa Elena and del Telégrafo, Mendoza Precordillera, Argentina. In this area, six volcanic events were generated through three volcanic stages that include collapse of voluminous Plinian columns associated to caldera pressurization and depressurization, emplacement of sub-volcanic bodies and dikes connected to depressurization of the magmatic chamber and establishment of resurgent domes and lava associated to caldera collapse events.

Petrologic and geochemical data indicate increasing acidification toward younger events varying from dacitic to rhyodacitic and rhyolitic rocks. The lithofacial organization allows correlating with the Lower to Upper Permian Horcajo Formation described in the Valle del Río de los Patos, San Juan province. Geochemical data suggests subduction-related arc magmatism in an extensional condition during Lower to Upper Permian.  相似文献

In the Central American Volcanic Arc, adakite-like volcanism has often been described as volumetrically insignificant. However, extensive silicic adakitic volcanism does occur in the Panamanian arc and provides an opportunity to evaluate the origin of this magma-type as well as to contrast its origin with other Central American silicic magmas. The Quaternary volcanic deposits of El Valle volcano are characterized by pronounced depletions in the heavy rare earth elements, low Y, high Sr, high Sr/Y, relatively high MgO, and low K2O/Na2O, when compared with other Quaternary Central American volcanics at similar SiO2. These chemical features are also diagnostic of adakitic signatures. Our new 40Ar/39Ar ages of lava flows and ash flows that compose the volcanic edifice of El Valle volcano illustrate that the eruptive volume of adakitic-like volcanism is substantial during the Quaternary (~120 km3). Adakitic-like magmas dominate the stratigraphic record. Common to all models for the origin of an adakite geochemical signature is the involvement of garnet, as a residual or fractionating phase. The stability of garnet in hydrous magmas has been recently reevaluated with important consequences; garnet is a stable primary igneous phase at pressure and temperature conditions expected for magma differentiation at the roots of a mature island arc. Moreover, adakite-like volcanism erupted at El Valle volcano displays the middle rare earth element depletion observed in other Panamanian volcanic centers that has been attributed to significant amphibole fractionation. Extensive amphibole fractionation may have occurred in two stages. The first stage of fractionation, garnet + amphibole fractionation, occurs from hydrous basaltic–andesitic parental magmas that have ponded at the base of an overthickened crust. The second stage occurs at mid-lower crustal levels where abundant amphibole + plagioclase and minor sphene crystallized from water-rich magmas. These two stages combined may have resulted in an amphibole-rich cumulate layer. This amphibole layer is likely the source of the abundant amphibole-rich cumulate enclaves and blobs found in volcanic products across the Panamanian arc. Stalling of water-rich magmas during this two-stage fractionation process could drive the interstitial liquids to the evolved compositions typical of continental crust, while leaving behind amphibole-rich cumulate rocks that may eventually be returned to the asthenosphere. Differentiation of H2O-rich magmas under the conditions appropriate for the roots of island arcs may therefore be a key process in developing a better understanding of the generation of continental crust in island arc environments.  相似文献
